The Muslim Socialist Set To Make NYC Mayoral History

<excerpt>Zohran Mamdani, poised to become NYC’s first Muslim mayor, faces Islamophobic attacks despite a campaign focused on housing, childcare, and affordability. His progressive stances continue to draw national attention.
</excerpt>

Zohran Mamdani, New York state legislator and front-runner in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor at age 33, is being beset by Islamophobic attacks after his seeming win over former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

If voted for in November, Mamdani would be the city’s first Muslim mayor. His platform was built around pressing economic concerns like affordable housing, transportation reform, access to childcare, and lowering food prices. In spite of attempts by the right to frame him entirely in terms of his religion and progressive ideology, Mamdani emerged victorious with 43.5% of first-choice votes through the city’s ranked-choice voting process. The final outcome will be announced in early July following vote redistribution.

While conservative figures have criticized his platform, many have launched explicit religious attacks. Far-right activist Laura Loomer claimed Mamdani’s win would bring about “9/11 2.0.” Donald Trump Jr. and Turning Point USA’s Charlie Kirk made similar comparisons, suggesting Mamdani’s candidacy is a threat to the city. Republican Rep. Nancy Mace posted a photo of Mamdani alongside references to 9/11, implying New Yorkers had forgotten its significance.

Mamdani, who is a Queens-based Democratic Socialist, has also been criticized for his outspoken advocacy on behalf of Palestinian rights, including the BDS movement and arrest demands for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. Cuomo was accused by a Cuomo-backing super PAC of spreading antisemitism, an accusation Mamdani strongly denied.

In public statements, Mamdani reaffirmed his resistance to all antisemitism, vowing to increase hate crime prevention if he were to be elected. He also spoke to the individual cost of religiously motivated abuse, saying that he is often the target of death threats.

In spite of the animosity, Mamdani told his campaign continues to be about bringing New Yorkers together around common economic issues. “This campaign is about making life more affordable and more just for all New Yorkers,” he said.

</excerpt>

The United States has imposed new sanctions on Iran’s oil trade, targeting more than 30 individuals, oil companies, and tankers operating in China, the UAE, India, and other regions. This move aligns with former President Donald Trump’s National Security Presidential Memorandum 2, which aims to reduce Iran’s oil exports to zero.

New Sanctions Target Iran’s Oil Supply Chain

The US Treasury and State Departments announced fresh restrictions on key Iranian oil entities, including:

Iran’s National Iranian Oil Co.

Iranian Oil Terminals Co.

Multiple oil tankers moving crude worth millions of dollars

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that the US will use “all available tools” to disrupt Iran’s oil supply chain, warning that entities dealing with Iranian oil face “significant sanctions risk.”

Trump’s Push for Tougher Measures

Trump previously stated that Iran “can never be allowed to develop nuclear weapons” and warned of harsh consequences if the country threatens US interests. He has also instructed advisers to take severe action if Iran attempts any attacks against him.

During his confirmation hearing, Bessent criticized the Biden administration’s sanctions approach and called for a more aggressive stance on Iran and Russia.

Iran’s Oil Revenues and US Strategy

According to an October 2024 US Energy Information Administration report, Iran earned $253 billion in oil revenues between 2018 and 2024 under both Biden and Trump administrations.

State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce reaffirmed the US position, stating, “As long as Iran uses its energy revenues for terrorism and destabilizing activities, we will hold the regime accountable.”

The latest sanctions signal a renewed effort by the US to cripple Iran’s oil-dependent economy while preventing it from funding militant groups in the Middle East.

Though details of the conversation remain under wraps, reports suggest the two leaders discussed key national and international issues, aiming to bridge gaps between their differing political ideologies.

Public Reaction

The meeting quickly became a hot topic on social media, with citizens and political analysts speculating about its implications. Many see it as a step toward political unity, while others remain skeptical about its impact.

Why This Meeting Matters

This meeting is rare, considering the history of tension between the two. It underscores the importance of dialogue in addressing pressing national concerns, regardless of political affiliation.

Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking encounter.

</excerpt>

Luxury cruise line Villa Vie Residences has introduced its new “Skip Forward” program, offering Americans the option to embark on a four-year global voyage, providing an alternative for those seeking to step away from the United States’ political scene. This immersive journey, priced at approximately $40,000 annually, takes guests on a worldwide adventure, allowing them to explore diverse destinations while leaving domestic matters behind.

Fox Business reports that the four-year package can be purchased upfront, with prices set at $159,999 per person for double-occupancy cabins and $255,999 for singles. Villa Vie describes the journey as a worry-free escape, with the tagline, “Pay once and never worry about it again.” Villa Vie’s CEO, Mikael Petterson, emphasized that the program was planned prior to Donald Trump’s 2024 election win. “This package resonates with those who said they’d leave the country if a particular candidate won,” he explained, while noting the program’s appeal to travelers of all political perspectives.

Despite the timing, the package does not mention Trump directly, though it mirrors other politically motivated travel options Villa Vie has offered in previous years. Their two-year “Mid-Term Selection” package, introduced ahead of the 2026 midterms, also caters to those looking for a unique travel experience tied to political milestones.

Anne Alms, Villa Vie’s Head of Sales, highlighted the appeal of the cruise: “Villa Vie offers a once-in-a-lifetime way to see the world at a slow pace, giving guests time to genuinely connect with each port’s culture.”

Villa Vie recently rolled out an additional “Endless Horizons” package, aimed at retirees concerned about living expenses. Chief Operating Officer Kathy Villalba explained, “This program offers retirees a secure lifestyle at sea, eliminating the worry of outliving their savings while exploring the world.”

</excerpt>

Vivek Ramaswamy, a former presidential contender and outspoken supporter of Donald Trump, has hinted at a significant role in Trump’s potential second administration. Speaking on ABC’s This Week, Ramaswamy revealed that he is considering “a couple great options” as he looks to make a lasting impact on the nation.

High-Impact Discussions Underway

When questioned by Jonathan Karl about his future role, Ramaswamy avoided specifics but acknowledged ongoing high-level discussions. “I’m exploring roles where I can deliver the greatest impact,” he said.

Two Key Positions on the Table

Ramaswamy is rumored to be eyeing two prominent roles:

1. Homeland Security Director

If appointed, Ramaswamy would spearhead Trump’s stringent immigration policies, including a proposed mass deportation operation targeting one million undocumented immigrants. This role aligns with Trump’s promise to fortify border security and reform the immigration system.

2. Ohio Senate Seat

With Vice President-elect JD Vance vacating his Senate seat in January, Ramaswamy may also consider stepping into the political spotlight in his home state of Ohio. The Republican governor will appoint a temporary replacement, with a special election set for 2026 to fill the seat. This position could offer Ramaswamy a powerful platform to influence domestic policy.

Aiming for Maximum Impact

Ramaswamy emphasized his goal to make the most significant contribution possible, whether in national security or as a political leader in Ohio. “I’m here to drive change and ensure a better future for America,” he stated confidently.

Stay tuned as Ramaswamy’s next move unfolds in the evolving political landscape.

Focused on bipartisanship, she prioritizes issues like the PRO Act and affordable healthcare. Her potential election symbolizes progress for transgender representation in US politics.
</excerpt>

Democrat Sarah McBride is on track to make history next week by becoming the first openly transgender person elected to the US Congress. McBride, 34, previously made headlines in 2016 as the first openly transgender individual to address a major US political convention and in 2020 when she became the first openly transgender person to serve in a US state Senate.

After securing the Democratic nomination in a competitive primary last September, McBride is favored to win Delaware’s sole seat in the US House of Representatives, a position that political analysts rate solidly Democratic.

In a recent interview, McBride expressed gratitude for her candidacy, saying, “The fact that the candidacy of someone like me is even possible… is a testament to Delawareans.” However, she emphasized that her campaign focuses on her track record of collaboration, stating, “I’m not running on my identity.”

Transgender rights have emerged as a contentious issue in US politics, with lawmakers in 37 states introducing at least 142 bills to restrict gender-affirming healthcare for transgender individuals in 2023—nearly three times the number from the previous year. Despite this climate, McBride remains optimistic about her ability to work with colleagues who may not fully support transgender rights. She stated, “If democracy is going to work, we have to be able to have conversations across disagreement.”

McBride’s legislative priorities include advocating for the PRO Act, which aims to enhance federal protections for workers seeking to unionize, along with initiatives for affordable healthcare and childcare. Her opponent, Republican John Whalen III, has chosen to focus his campaign on issues like immigration and the economy, avoiding gender politics.

McBride has faced criticism from some quarters, notably from Republican lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene, who used derogatory terms during a podcast appearance. Kelley Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign, highlighted the significance of McBride’s potential election, stating that it would represent a milestone for transgender Americans. “Her historic role as the first transgender member of Congress would be a testament to both the work she’s done and to the power of voters to embrace progress over fear,” Robinson remarked.

</excerpt>

Saint Cloud: Donald Trump labeled Vice President Kamala Harris a “crazy liberal,” while she vowed to prevail over his “wild lies” as both laid out their presidential campaign attack lines with just 100 days until election day.

After addressing a bitcoin conference in Tennessee, Trump rallied supporters in Minnesota, aiming to turn the traditionally Democratic Midwest state into a battleground.

“This November, the American people are going to reject Kamala Harris’s crazy liberal extremism in a massive landslide,” Trump told the crowd. He criticized Harris’s past positions, such as banning fracking and overhauling the criminal justice system.

Trump also condemned Harris and President Biden’s records on illegal immigration, inflation, and crime, promising the “largest deportation effort” in US history and to end taxation of tips.

Meanwhile, Harris held a fundraising event in Massachusetts with celebrity guests like James Taylor and Yo-Yo Ma. She addressed Trump’s claims, calling his allegations “wild lies” and challenging him to a debate.

“We are the underdogs in this race, but this is a people-powered campaign,” Harris told her supporters, emphasizing her commitment to abortion rights and inviting Trump to reconsider his refusal to debate.

Harris aims to become the first female president in US history, gathering support from Democratic leaders, including Biden and the Obamas, and gaining early momentum in polls.

Torianna Parrish, a supporter greeting Harris in Massachusetts, said, “I wanted to show there’s power in numbers. We’re rooting for her and want to see her make this country what it needs to be.“

</excerpt>

US presidential candidate Donald Trump accused election rival Kamala Harris of being an anti-Semite and allowing the murder of newborn babies in a speech aimed at rallying religious supporters on Friday. This speech quickly went off the rails.

Vice President Harris, married to a Jewish man, has gained ground on Trump in polling since she replaced Joe Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket days ago. Former Republican president Trump dedicated much of his address at a religious convention in southern Florida to attacking Harris’s record as a senator and as Biden’s vice president. However, many of his accusations were unfounded.

By contrast, Kamala Harris stabbed Israel in the back in its hour of need.

Two days ago, she refused to attend the speech in Congress of the Prime Minister of Israel.

Together with Joe Biden, she gave billions of dollars to Iran and Hamas to fund their campaigns of terror.… pic.twitter.com/0BibtgNTJJ

— Trump War Room (@TrumpWarRoom) July 27, 2024

Trump criticized Harris for skipping Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the US Congress on Wednesday to honor a prior commitment, falsely accusing her of anti-Semitism. “She doesn’t like Jewish people. She doesn’t like Israel. That’s the way it is, and that’s the way it’s always going to be. She’s not going to change,” he said.

This remark, along with his claim that Harris “is totally against the Jewish people” in North Carolina on Wednesday, marked an escalation in Trump’s incendiary rhetoric. This comes days after his campaign claimed an attempt on his life had given him a focus on unity.

Trump’s hour-long Friday speech, hosted by the hard-right Turning Point Action, raised questions over Harris’s previous statements on policing, immigration, and the environment. However, it was filled with hyperbole and falsehoods.

‘Execute the Baby’

Trump, who is fighting multiple indictments, suggested without evidence that the Justice Department and FBI were targeting Christians and anti-abortion activists for their “religious beliefs.” He also called Biden’s decision to exit the election campaign a “coup” by Democrats and said America was a “laughing stock.”

Trump saved his harshest criticism for Harris, calling her a “bum” and a failed vice president. He falsely accused her of wanting to force doctors to give chemical castration drugs to children and suggested she might cheat to win in November. “If Kamala Harris has her way, they will have a federal law for abortion, to rip the baby out of the womb in the eighth, ninth month, and even after birth — execute the baby after birth,” he claimed.

Crowning Glory

Trump, now the oldest major-party nominee in history at 78, is scrambling to reorient his campaign against a much younger opponent. Last week, he accepted the official presidential nomination at the Republican convention in Milwaukee.

His “crowning glory” came a week after a gunman nearly killed him at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump vowed Friday to commemorate the incident with “a big and beautiful” new rally in the town, though he did not give a date.

Kamala Harris, seeking to become the first female president in US history, is quickly assembling a campaign against an opponent who has been in near permanent reelection mode since 2016. Former President Barack Obama pledged support for Harris earlier Friday, as polls showed her closing the gap that Trump had built over Biden, making the race a statistical tie.

A top California prosecutor and senator before becoming the country’s first female and first Black and South Asian vice president, Harris highlighted Trump’s criminal conviction and what she described as a Republican attack on “hard-fought freedoms” in US society.

Democrats quickly responded to a Trump campaign announcement late Thursday that raised doubts about whether he will debate Harris. “It shows that he’s afraid,” said Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a major Harris campaign advocate. “It shows that he knows that if the two of them are on a stage together, it’s not going to end well for him.”

</excerpt>

From the everchanging canvas of global affairs, picking up only a few developments every week is not easy. There are events, incidents, talks, exercises and much more! But the developments that impact global politics by and large indeed need to get featured. This week also remained happening considering such affairs. However, this week belongs to the critical developments in the US presidential elections. Soon after Republicans’ announcement of declaring Trump as the official republican candidate for the US presidential elections, Biden shocked the world by announcing his exit from the race while endorsing Kamla Harris as the nominee. This new development has created a stir not only in the politics of the US but also in the realms of global politics.

This week, the US President Joe Biden declared that he will not seek re-election, responding to mounting pressure from his own Democratic Party to step aside. In a statement posted on social media platform X, Biden confirmed that he intends to serve out his term until January 2025 and will deliver an address to the nation in the coming days. Shortly after his announcement, President Biden swiftly threw his support behind Vice President Kamla Harris for the Democratic Party’s nomination, eliminating any uncertainty about the party’s future direction. By opting out of the re-election race, President Biden has paved the way for Harris to potentially become the first Black woman to lead a presidential ticket in the history of the US. Needless to say, Biden’s gesture to timely declare his exit from the race of the presidential elections is welcomed by his party people as everyone was worried about his deteriorated health.

After Biden’s announcement several prominent democrats shown their support behind Harris as the Democratic Party’s potential presidential nominee. Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the House, has made it clear that her endorsement of Harris is both official and deeply rooted in personal and political beliefs. There are various reasons behind endorsing Harris. First and foremost, she is the Vice President of the country and is vocal about the principal objectives of her party. Then, she stands on a firm financial ground. After Biden’s announcement, her campaign experienced a significant increase in donations. Harris reportedly raised over 80 Mn USD in new donations within a day of Mr. Biden’s announcement. This striking fundraising feat, combined with the substantial amount raised from the Biden-Harris campaign, provides her with a solid foundation for the upcoming campaign. Also, if Harris secures the nomination, she would effectively neutralize a key Republican criticism of Biden: his age. The republican campaign has long sought to portray Biden as frail and easily confused, a narrative that gained traction following the president’s lacklustre debate performance a month ago. Being much younger than Trump, Harris has turned the table in this particular regard. It is also believed that Harris, if chosen as the official nominee by her party, would also be able to get support from the voters belonging to minority communities, women, and youngsters.

However, there are certain apprehensions also. Being the Vice President of the US, people very well know her style of working. For example, at the beginning of her tenure, she was assigned the responsibility of tackling the underlying reasons behind the migration crisis occurring at the border between the US and Mexico. Several errors and inaccuracies, including some TV interviews, negatively impacted her reputation and made her vulnerable to criticism from conservative groups.

Though people already have an image of Harris in their minds, in the coming days, she still has an opportunity to make a different impression on the people of the US. Any wrong move at this critical juncture could lead her to unexpected outcomes in Democratic National Convention scheduled in August. Latest developments in US politics have already demonstrated how quickly and intensely the dynamics of the race for the White House can change. It would be interesting to see how does Harris manage reaching at the grandest stage in American politics, and prove her ability to compete the ex-President of the US. After Biden’s announcement, Harris is also not leaving any stone unturned in proving herself as the best candidate for the presidential race. She openly invited Trump for a debate this week, however, Trump’s team denied to engage in any debate with Harris until she gets officially nominated by her party.

The Trump campaign has announced this week that Trump would participate in a general election debate with Harris only after the Democratic Party officially selects her as their nominee. This announcement was made in response to Harris indicating a willingness to take part in such a debate with Trump. Trump is already the official Republican nominee for the third term, as announced in the Republican National Convention, after he survived an assassination attempt. The incident has created a wave of sympathy for Trump, and he is also campaigning these days with a winning confidence.

Day by day, the race for the US presidential elections is getting interesting. However, I believe, it is all about taking forward one’s national interests. National interests of a nation work as the north star for any leader and that’s what people too expect. The one who gets this secret, wins the race and the hearts too!

</excerpt>

On Sunday, President Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election for a second term, paving the way for Kamala Harris to potentially become the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential election. Biden’s decision follows concerns about his age and recent debate performance.

Harris’s Historic Opportunity

Kamala Harris, currently serving as Vice President, is already a trailblazer as the first woman, Black person, and person of South Asian descent to hold the vice presidency. If she secures the Democratic nomination and wins against Republican Donald Trump, she would make history as the first female president.

Biden’s Endorsement

Biden praised Harris as his best choice for successor and endorsed her candidacy. In a statement on social media, he urged Democrats to unite and support Harris in the upcoming election.

Harris’s Response

Harris called Biden’s decision a “selfless and patriotic act” and expressed gratitude for his endorsement. She emphasized her commitment to winning the nomination and addressing key issues during her campaign.

Democratic Party Dynamics

While prominent Democrats quickly rallied behind Harris, her nomination is not guaranteed. There are discussions about a potential “mini primary” to evaluate other candidates before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month.

Polling and Public Opinion

Recent polls indicate that about 60% of Democrats believe Harris would be a strong presidential candidate. However, public opinion is mixed, with 40% of U.S. adults having a favorable view of her.

Harris’s Political Journey

Kamala Harris’s political career includes serving as California’s Attorney General and U.S. Senator before becoming Vice President. Despite some challenges and criticism, she has been a vocal advocate for abortion rights and has worked to connect with young and diverse voters

Key Points:

Biden’s Withdrawal: President Biden has stepped down from the 2024 race, endorsing Kamala Harris as his successor.

Harris’s Historic Role: If elected, Harris would be the first Black woman and South Asian president in U.S. history.

Campaign Dynamics: The Democratic Party is rallying around Harris, but her nomination faces scrutiny and potential competition.

Public Opinion: Polls show mixed feelings about Harris’s candidacy among Democrats and the general public.

Kamala Harris’s potential run for president represents a significant moment in U.S. political history,

This comment came shortly after Biden announced he would not be running for re-election.

A CNN reporter shared on social media platform X that Trump made these remarks soon after Biden’s decision was made public.

The unexpected announcement from Biden has reshaped the upcoming presidential race, with Harris now potentially leading the Democratic ticket. Trump, who is seeking another term, has expressed confidence in his ability to win against Harris.

Key Points:

Trump’s Comment: Trump told CNN that Kamala Harris would be an easier opponent than Joe Biden.

Biden’s Announcement: President Joe Biden announced he will not seek re-election, opening the door for Harris to potentially lead the Democratic ticket.

Campaign Dynamics: Trump’s remarks indicate a shift in strategy as he prepares for a potential face-off against Harris in the 2024 election.

With Biden stepping aside, the political landscape for the 2024 presidential race is rapidly changing, and Trump’s comments highlight the new dynamics at play.

</excerpt>

Donald Trump was convicted on all 34 charges in New York, including falsifying business records related to a hush-money payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels.

Trump, who has denied wrongdoing, plans to appeal the verdict, stating, “This was a rigged trial by a conflicted judge who was corrupt. This was a rigged trial, a disgrace.”

The process by which the jury reached a verdict of guilt for Trump involved their unanimous decision after deliberating for two days.

Unanimous decision: A panel of 12 New Yorkers unanimously found Trump guilty after two days of deliberation.

Charges explained: Trump falsified business records to conceal a hush-money payment to Daniels just before the 2016 election, part of an illegal scheme to deceive voters.

Felony elevation: The fraudulent accounting was elevated to a felony due to its connection to violating state election laws. Prosecutors argued it aimed to influence the 2016 election outcome by hiding damaging information.

The significance lies in:

Trump’s conviction marks him as the first criminal former president and felon to be a major political party nominee.

Democrats may use the conviction in attack ads for the upcoming election, raising questions about Trump’s candidacy and potential presidency.

Trump plans to appeal, alleging political bias and flaws in the trial.

Will it affect the presidential elections?

Biden’s campaign sees the verdict as proof that no one is above the law but acknowledges elections determine Trump’s fate.

Despite the conviction, Trump’s poll numbers remain steady, suggesting minimal impact on his core supporters.

The conviction’s effect may hinge on Biden’s campaign efforts to highlight it to voters.

Here’s what they’re saying:

Nicholas Higgins, political scientist, doubts the conviction will sway voters already entrenched in their views.

Donald Nieman, political analyst, believes the conviction could hurt Trump in a close election.

Jared Carter, professor, suggests the conviction may energize Trump’s base but alienate independents, pivotal in swing states.

What comes after this:

The conviction will likely dominate headlines but its impact on the election remains uncertain.

Both campaigns and voters will react to this unprecedented development in the coming months, potentially shaping the 2024 election.

Biden’s campaign may play a crucial role in highlighting the conviction’s significance to voters.

On Thursday, after a seven-week trial, a New York jury found him guilty of falsifying documents to hide a payment intended to silence a porn star before the 2016 election. Notably, Ivanka Trump, who has largely stayed out of her father’s political activities recently, reacted to the verdict by posting a throwback picture on social media. The photo, showing a young Trump holding Ivanka, was captioned “I love you Dad” with a heart emoji. This public display, her first since the trial began, suggests that despite Trump’s conviction on all 34 counts, his family remains firmly supportive.

The 42-year-old, who previously served as a senior advisor in Trump’s administration and as Director of the Office of Economic Initiatives and Entrepreneurship, reaffirmed her support for her father.

During the seven weeks of the “controversial” trial, adult actress Stormy Daniels and former Trump lawyer and “fixer” Michael Cohen testified against Trump, making several shocking allegations. The former president was accused of covering up a $130,000 payment to Daniels to suppress potential sex scandals that could have jeopardized his 2016 campaign.

The 57 year-old republican representative from California’s 23rd congressional district wins speaker chair after making major compromises with an ultraconservative bloc of the party.

Republican representative Kevin McCarthy was finally elected as the speaker of the US House of Representatives on Saturday after five days of chaotic voting. This however was possible only after making major compromises to an ultraconservative bloc of party. His victory in 15th ballot ended the deepest congressional dysfunction in more than 160 years.

This win was not achieved without one final humiliation when representative Matt Gaetz held his vote on the 14th ballot which led to a scuffle in which fellow Republican Mie Rogers had to be escorted away. This also illustrates the difficulties that lie ahead for the newly elected speaker in leading a narrow and deeply polarized majority.

The election was quite a close one where McCarthy won by a grim margin of 216 to 212. This was only possible when six of his own party members withheld their votes. Midterm elections in November left republicans with a weak majority lead of just votes strengthening the radical right wingers who opposed McCarthy’s leadership.

In his inaugural speech McCarthy said, “Our system is built on checks and balances. It’s time for us to be a check and provide some balance to the president’s policies,” He further laid out his priorities including cutting spending and immigration.
