Here’s a detailed look at major US military bases across the Middle East that could be potential targets.
</excerpt>

After the United States launched strikes on Iran’s key nuclear sites, Tehran issued a strong warning, threatening retaliation. With tensions escalating, US military bases across the Middle East are under renewed scrutiny as potential targets.

Here’s a closer look at the main US military installations in the region:

BAHRAIN

Headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet

Oversees operations across the Gulf, Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Indian Ocean.

Crucial for maritime security and naval operations in the region.

QATAR

Al Udeid Air Base (24-hectare base outside Doha)

Serves as the forward headquarters of US Central Command (CENTCOM).

Largest US base in the Middle East, housing around 10,000 troops.

Key hub for air operations and logistics from Egypt to Kazakhstan.

KUWAIT

Camp Arifjan: Forward headquarters of US Army Central.

Ali Al Salem Air Base: Located 40 km from the Iraqi border, known as “The Rock”.

Camp Buehring: Used as a staging post for troops entering Iraq and Syria.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

Al Dhafra Air Base (south of Abu Dhabi): Jointly used with UAE Air Force.

Key for missions against ISIS and intelligence gathering.

Jebel Ali Port (Dubai):

Not a military base, but largest port of call for the US Navy in the region.

Frequently hosts aircraft carriers and naval vessels.

IRAQ

Ain Al Asad Air Base (Anbar province):

Targeted by Iranian missile strikes in 2020 after Soleimani’s death.

Supports Iraqi security forces and NATO missions.

Erbil Air Base (Kurdistan Region):

A vital hub for coalition training, logistics, and intelligence coordination.

SAUDI ARABIA

As of 2024, 2,321 US troops are stationed in the Kingdom.

Prince Sultan Air Base (60 km south of Riyadh):

Supports Patriot missile batteries and THAAD systems.

Provides air and missile defense operations in coordination with Saudi forces.

JORDAN

Muwaffaq al Salti Air Base (Azraq):

Home to the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing of US Air Forces Central.

Engaged in regional missions across the Levant.

Conclusion:

As tensions flare in the wake of US airstrikes, Iran has signaled that American bases across the Middle East could be targeted. These installations represent not only US military strength but also strategic influence in one of the world’s most volatile regions.

Officials remain tight-lipped on the exact locations of the interceptions.
</excerpt>

The US military has intercepted Iranian missiles targeted at Israel, two US officials confirmed on Friday. The interceptions, they added, have been done using ground-based defenses and not with the use of fighter aircraft or naval warships at this point.

One source, who spoke off the record, explained that although the US maintains a strong military presence in the Middle East, estimated at close to 40,000 troops, land-based resources alone have been utilized thus far in this operation. America’s military presence in the Middle East encompasses a broad spectrum of air defense vehicles, fighter jets, and Navy warships that can intercept airborne threats.

Details of the precise location of the interceptions were not made public. The US has, however, used fighter planes and warships before to destroy Iranian-launched missiles and drones headed for Israel in previous escalations.

The development comes at a time of increased tensions within the region and the US remaining committed to helping defend Israel from increasing threats. It also indicates that Washington is willing to leverage its wide-ranging military capabilities within the Middle East as a means of dissuading and reacting to any Iranian attack.

</excerpt>

The US military has made over $21 million worth of flights to deport migrants out of the United States in President Donald Trump’s second term, data released by the Pentagon on Monday reported. The Trump administration continues its pursuit of stemming illegal immigration, an effort that involves a range of controversial tactics, including raids, arrests, and the use of military assets along the US-Mexico border. The publication of these statistics brings to light the high expense of military participation in immigration enforcement.

Flights and Expenses in the US

During the period between January 20 and April 8, US Transportation Command (TRANSCOM) conducted 46 flights on military planes solely for migrant deportation operations. The command released specific information regarding the flights in reply to a string of questions by Senator Elizabeth Warren. Based on TRANSCOM, the flights equaled a total of 802.5 flight hours, and each flight was an average of $26,277 per hour. The total cost of the flights for this period reached over $21 million.

Senator Warren’s Response

Senator Warren, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, expressed her indignation at the use of military assets for political motives. She stated, “Every American should be outraged by Donald Trump wasting military resources to pay for his political stunts that do not make us safer.” Warren also emphasized that US troops should not engage in what she described as an abuse of power. The Democratic legislator argued that the military must focus on its core mandate of defending the country rather than being used for unrelated purposes.

Aggressive Approach of US President Trump’s Administration

The Trump administration’s belligerent immigration policy has been a central part of the previous president’s political platform. The administration has sent thousands of troops to the US-Mexico border, granting them extraordinary authority to hold migrants in specific zones. The government has implemented these measures as part of a wider policy aimed at reducing illegal migration, but critics have widely criticized them for their expense, efficacy, and impact on military personnel.

Controversy and Criticism

These military missions, along with the heavy economic burden, have been subject to severe criticism by lawmakers and human rights activists. The critics opine that employing military assets on deportation operations negates the original mission of the military and creates an unfair burden on US soldiers. Additionally, the continuing expenses of such missions have also questioned the appropriateness of utilizing government spending for political reasons, as well as the wider consequences of employing the use of the military in law enforcement within the country.

Brown. Caine, a retired fighter pilot, vows to uphold the Constitution and resist unlawful orders.
</excerpt>

The US Senate on Friday confirmed retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Dan “Razin” Caine as the new chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, after a historic and contentious shake-up led by President Donald Trump. The Senate approved Caine on a 60-25 vote, with bipartisan support, though Democrats opposed speeding up the process, leading to an early morning roll call.

Caine succeeds General CQ Brown, who was suddenly fired by Trump in February midway through his four-year term. It was the first time a serving chairman was removed short of finishing their term, and the first time that a retired officer occupied the post.

Prior to his confirmation, the Senate confirmed Caine’s restoration to active duty as a major general, a statutory necessity owing to his previous retirement. A veteran F-16 pilot, Caine’s career trajectory broke the mold. Unlike the majority who rise to the highest military position by commanding a service branch or combatant command, he did not serve in either of these positions. He held positions in the National Guard from 2009 to 2016 alongside being a businessman and investor. Prior to retirement, he served as associate director for military affairs at the CIA.

Caine, in his confirmation hearing, reasserted his apolitical nature and vowed he would spurn any illegal orders and would defend the Constitution and US laws. Trump, who had met Caine during a visit to Iraq in 2018, according to his claim, once posited that Caine sported a MAGA hat in a gesture of loyalty something that Caine disputed.

Trump’s restructuring of military leadership also involved firing five other high-ranking officers and putting Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in their places, who expressed doubt over the former leadership and plans to axe diversity initiatives from the military. Trump is seen by critics to be emphasizing loyalty over unbiased military advice.

</excerpt>

The US intelligence community has identified China as the most significant and wide-ranging threat to US national security. The Annual Threat Assessment, released on March 25, highlights Beijing’s military advancements, cyber operations, and global influence campaigns. The report warns that China is steadily enhancing its capabilities to challenge US interests, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.

Cyber Operations and Global Influence

The report underscores China’s expanding use of cyber operations and influence campaigns to undermine US security. Beijing is expected to continue its “coercive and subversive” activities, targeting both domestic US institutions and international partnerships.

Chinese officials believe the US is leading a global effort to tarnish China’s image and weaken the ruling Communist Party. In response, Beijing is ramping up cyber espionage, disinformation efforts, and diplomatic maneuvers to counter perceived threats to its power.

China’s Taiwan Strategy and Military Ambitions

China is making “steady but uneven” progress in building military capabilities to take control of Taiwan. The report states that Beijing is preparing to challenge US military operations in the Pacific and is increasing pressure on Taiwan through military drills and economic coercion.

However, US intelligence agencies believe China remains cautious, opting to manage tensions with Washington while solidifying its long-term strategic position. The report also highlights internal vulnerabilities within China, including President Xi Jinping’s centralized leadership approach, which may hinder Beijing’s ability to address domestic and international challenges effectively.

China Rejects US Intelligence Claims

In response to the report, China dismissed the findings as “irresponsible and biased.” Foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated that Beijing has no intention of surpassing or replacing the US. Meanwhile, US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard reaffirmed the assessment, calling China “our most capable strategic competitor.”

Beyond China, the report also identifies threats from Russia, Iran, North Korea, and non-state actors, including transnational criminal organizations and extremist groups. As global tensions rise, US intelligence agencies warn of increasing security challenges in the coming years.

Critics and advocates for LGBTQ+ rights prepare for legal battles.
</excerpt>

On Monday, former U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning the use of “invented pronouns” and transgender ideology within the military. According to Trump, this move was necessary to maintain discipline, truthfulness, and an honorable lifestyle among troops.

On releasing his statement, Trump averred that individuals living as a different gender other than their biologized gender disagreed with military tradition. He reasoned that it does not work so well and also hurts the preparedness of military capabilities. “Speaking at a retreat for Republican House members in Miami, Mr. Trump said, “To make sure that we have the most lethal force on the face of the earth, we get transgender ideology hell out of our military.

Trump’s History with Transgender Military Policies

This order aligns with Trump’s earlier stance during his first presidential term. In 2017, he reversed an Obama-era policy that allowed transgender individuals to serve openly in the military. At the time, Trump claimed their inclusion was “disruptive, expensive, and eroded military camaraderie.”

The Obama administration had already put in place a policy in 2016 allowing transgender troops to serve openly and was planning to start accepting transgender recruits as of July 1, 2017. However, Trump’s initial ban derailed those efforts.

In 2021, Joe Biden ended Trump’s ban, reestablishing the right for transgender people to serve. Biden argued that all Americans wanting to serve their country should be able to do so. In a farewell address last week, outgoing Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated, “Any military that turns away qualified patriots who are eager to serve is just making itself smaller and weaker.”

Reactions to the New Policy

A White House official described Trump’s latest order as a step toward “eradicating gender radicalism from the military.” Lawyers representing the troops have promised to challenge it in court again, just as they did during the first term.

At the moment, the number of transgender service members in the US military is low, but a ban will create major difficulties, especially at a time when the services are facing recruitment problems. Excluding qualified people based on gender identity only weakens the armed forces, critics say.

Against this backdrop, Trump remains firm about his opinion that the policy change is necessary for the strength and cohesiveness of the military.

The 82nd Airborne Division may soon join efforts.
</excerpt>

On Friday, the United States military began deporting migrants by C-17 aircraft. President Donald Trump had so ordered it; it marked a new point in the administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration. The Pentagon is putting final touches to deploying more troops to the US-Mexico border amid tensions along the frontiers. The deployment includes members of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division.

Trump, who declared illegal immigration a national emergency on his first day in office, had directed the military to assist in securing the southern border. Sweeping asylum ban and measures to limit citizenship for children born on US soil are some of the other actions taken by the president under an aggressive stance on immigration reform.

On January 20, Trump signed an executive order instructing the Pentagon to send as many troops as needed to establish “complete operational control” over the southern border. The first wave of deportation flights, with two US military aircraft transporting around 80 migrants each to Guatemala, began on Friday.

This comes on the heels of other announcements made by the Trump administration to add an additional 1,500 active-duty troops to the border. A second wave of deployment that could be as high as thousands from the 82nd Airborne Division may be implemented as early as next week, final decisions have not yet been reached.

Typically assigned to overseas missions, the potential involvement of the 82nd Airborne Division in domestic operations highlights the gravity of the situation. Although informal discussions have indicated that as many as 10,000 troops might eventually be sent, the actual number of troops deployed will depend on a variety of logistical and operational considerations.

</excerpt>

Plans to Remove Transgender Troops

US President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly set to sign an executive order on January 20, his first day back in office, banning transgender individuals from serving in the military. This move would not only prohibit new enlistments but also discharge an estimated 15,000 active transgender service members, deeming them medically unfit to serve.

The expected policy is a sharp reversal of President Joe Biden’s 2021 decision to allow transgender individuals to serve openly. Trump had previously implemented a partial ban during his first term, citing concerns over medical costs and alleged disruption to military operations.

Impact on Military Readiness

The proposed removal comes at a time when the US military faces recruitment challenges. Sources suggest that only the Marine Corps has met its recruitment targets, raising concerns about the potential loss of experienced personnel. “This will exacerbate critical skill gaps and harm unit cohesion,” said Rachel Branaman, executive director of the Modern Military Association of America.

Branaman added that discharging thousands of transgender troops could lead to significant financial and operational costs, estimating it could take decades and billions of dollars to replace the lost expertise.

Nomination of Pete Hegseth as Defense Secretary

Trump’s nomination of Pete Hegseth, a Fox News host and former National Guard major, as defense secretary further signals a hardline stance. Hegseth has criticized what he calls “effeminate” leadership and has opposed the Pentagon’s focus on diversity and inclusion. He argued that medical care for transgender personnel is an “extravagance” and emblematic of “trans lunacy.”

Concerns Among Transgender Service Members

Paulo Batista, a transgender analyst in the US Navy, expressed dismay over the potential ban. Batista emphasized the vital roles transgender service members hold, warning of operational upheaval. “Removing 15,000 of us means others must fill those roles, which could take months or years,” Batista said.

Criticism of the Policy

LGBTQ+ advocates argue that the ban undermines military readiness and sends a harmful message about inclusion. “This policy adds administrative burdens to warfighting units and weakens the armed forces,” said Branaman.

If enacted, Trump’s policy is expected to ignite legal battles and deepen divisions over LGBTQ+ rights within the military and beyond.

</excerpt>

In a recent video that went viral, Mia Khalifa, former adult film star and now a social media personality, addressed US military veterans with biting criticism. Opening with “Good morning to everybody who is not in the US military,” she quickly launched into a critique of the country’s treatment of soldiers and the impact of foreign wars. Addressing her thoughts on American soldiers stationed abroad, Khalifa expressed disdain, saying they are sent to “fight a war for a country that doesn’t care about them.”

“I Hope You Get PTSD”: Khalifa’s Message to Veterans

Khalifa went on to comment about the mental health challenges faced by veterans, stating, “I hope you go over there and get your little brain all scrambled up with PTSD.” She implied that upon returning, soldiers would find inadequate support from the US government, which, according to her, “does not care about you once you’re back and no longer useful.” These comments drew strong reactions, particularly for seeming to trivialize veterans’ struggles with PTSD.

Long History of Controversial Statements

This latest episode adds to a list of contentious remarks Khalifa has made about the US and its foreign policies. Known for her outspoken social and political views, she has frequently criticized the country’s international stance and policies toward the Middle East. Khalifa’s recent statements on Israel and Palestine have also stirred controversy, with some seeing her comments as supportive of Hamas. She drew criticism for likening recent violent incidents to “a Renaissance painting,” a metaphor many found inappropriate.

Social Media Reacts Strongly

Social media was quick to respond. Many users denounced her comments, with some calling her statements disrespectful and even unpatriotic. One user argued that the freedom Khalifa enjoys to voice such opinions comes directly from the sacrifices made by those in the military. Another questioned the validity of her claim, saying it undermines the struggles faced by many service members.

A Divisive Online Presence

While Khalifa has amassed a considerable following on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, her posts often elicit divided responses. For some, her commentary on social issues resonates, while others feel her tone crosses a line, especially when addressing sensitive topics like veterans’ mental health.

This comment was intended to highlight what she perceives as the government’s neglect of veterans’ welfare. In the video, Khalifa begins by greeting “everyone not in the U.S. military” and criticizes America’s foreign deployments, stating, “I hope you go over there and get your little brain all scrambled up.”

Critique of U.S. Military Deployments

Khalifa, a former adult film star turned social media activist, has been vocal about her support for Palestinians and has made controversial remarks following the October 7, 2023, attacks. In her recent post, she launched a sharp critique of U.S. military troops overseas, saying, “Good morning to everyone who is sitting at home and not on soil that doesn’t belong to them, fighting a war for a country that doesn’t care about them.”

The video, which she later deleted, emerged shortly after U.S. troops were sent to the Middle East amid rising tensions. Khalifa, previously a top-rated performer on PornHub and known for receiving threats from ISIS for her role in which she wore a hijab, has consistently labeled Israel as an “apartheid” state. Her politically charged comments have resulted in brands distancing themselves from her.

In the video, Khalifa mockingly expresses a hope that U.S. soldiers deployed abroad will return with PTSD, stating, “I hope you go over there and get your little brain all scrambled up with PTSD and come back here and see how much the United States cares about you, pookie!” She adopts a baby voice while emphasizing that veterans would receive little more than breathing exercises from the VA to address their mental health issues. “Oh, I’m so sad, I p— my pants every time I see a falafel stand in Manhattan,” she added.

Khalifa further critiques the treatment of veterans, claiming, “Let’s see how much the VA cares about you. Let’s see what they tell you to do with your little broken brain from going over to fight a war that’s not yours. They’re going to try to tell you to do breathing exercises because the US government does not give a f— about you, once you cannot die for them. Once you’re done, once you’re a shell, they don’t care about you.”

Viral Impact Before Removal

Her video attracted over 3 million views on X before it was removed. After previously facing criticism for trivializing the October 7 attacks, she clarified her views in an interview with The New York Times, stating that she believes “Palestinians resisting Israeli occupation are fighting for their freedom, similar to the fall of the Berlin Wall.”

Former White House Chief of Staff, John Kelly, who served under Donald Trump, has issued sharp criticism against the former president, describing him as aligning with the definition of fascism. Kelly, who worked closely with Trump during his presidency in 2018, also implied that Trump harbors an admiration for Hitler. He warned that if Trump were to regain power, he might govern in a manner reminiscent of the notorious dictator.

Kelly’s warning follows Trump’s recent controversial comments on Fox News, where the former president labeled domestic threats in the U.S. as more dangerous than foreign adversaries like China and Russia. When asked about potential chaos on Election Day, Trump suggested that a “smart president” could handle such situations, even hinting at the military’s involvement if necessary to maintain order. “It should be very easily handled by, if necessary, the National Guard or, if really necessary, the military,” Trump said.

The Controversy Around DoD Directive 5240.01

Amid these political discussions, focus has also shifted to the Biden-Harris administration with accusations arising from the far-right regarding an updated Department of Defense Directive, known as 5240.01. This directive, initially issued in 2007 and recently revised, has sparked significant concern online. Some claim that it gives the U.S. government unprecedented power to use lethal force against American citizens on U.S. soil.

Social media, particularly far-right corners, has seen a surge in posts accusing the current administration of pushing through the updated directive to give the Pentagon authority to target Americans. These accusations claim that the Biden-Harris administration is following the same path that Trump was accused of taking—preparing to use military force against its citizens.

BREAKING :October Surprise Joe Biden/Kamala Harris have just pushed through DoD Directive 5240.01 giving the Pentagon power for the first time in history to use lethal force to kill Americans on U.S.soil who protest government policies. They're literally Hitler! America's Hitler!… pic.twitter.com/EGeVMrIIx5

Examining the ‘Lethal Force’ Clause

The updated directive includes a clause allowing the Secretary of Defense to approve assistance in situations where lethal force might be necessary. This could involve providing support to civilian law enforcement in situations where confrontation is expected. The updated language in the directive has stirred fear among conspiracy theorists, with some interpreting it as a plan for assassinations on U.S. soil.

Former Congressman Ron Paul contributed to these fears by stating on his Liberty Report show that this directive turns the U.S. into a “police state.” Similar concerns were raised by Republican Congressman Andy Harris, who warned that the Democrats were doing exactly what they accused Trump of planning—using military force after an election under the guise of a national emergency.

? ?? https://t.co/CJgQ3P0Ohc

— General Mike Flynn (@GenFlynn) October 16, 2024

Pentagon and Experts Clarify the Misconceptions

In response to these conspiracy theories, Pentagon spokesperson Sue Gough clarified the issue. She explained that the directive is not new and does not authorize the Secretary of Defense to use lethal force against American citizens. “The provisions in the directive are not new,” Gough said, adding that it doesn’t support the allegations circulating on social media.

Experts also weighed in on the matter. Joseph Nunn, a lawyer with the Liberty & National Security Program at the Brennan Center for Justice, dismissed the rumors, stating that “there’s nothing here.” He further explained that the reference to lethal force simply clarifies that the military can assist law enforcement in situations where force might be required, but it doesn’t grant new powers.

Routine Update or Political Timing?

Questions have been raised about the timing of the directive’s revision, with critics pointing out that it was updated just weeks before the 2024 election. However, the Department of Defense emphasized that this was part of routine updates and not related to the upcoming election. Gough confirmed that “Reissuing 5240.01 was part of the normal business of the Department,” and not timed for any political purpose.

Risa Brooks, a political science professor, also supported this view, noting that updates to DoD regulations are common and do not signal any nefarious agenda. According to Brooks, the rumors circulating are politically motivated attempts to sow distrust in the military for partisan gain.

Directive vs. Posse Comitatus Act

Another point of contention has been whether the updated directive violates the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits federal troops from participating in civilian law enforcement unless specifically authorized by law. The Pentagon spokesperson reiterated that the directive remains consistent with the Posse Comitatus Act and civil rights protections.

Despite these reassurances, former Trump officials and right-wing figures continue to stoke fears. The debate highlights the growing mistrust in government institutions and the military, fueled by political rhetoric and misinformation.

While the revision of DoD Directive 5240.01 has sparked significant debate, military experts and the Pentagon have dismissed the claims of a hidden agenda. Instead, they emphasize that the update is part of standard administrative procedures and does not represent a threat to Americans’ civil liberties. Nevertheless, as Election Day approaches, the political climate remains tense, with both sides accusing each other of overstepping democratic boundaries.

</excerpt>

Twitch streamer Morgan, known as Frogan, has been handed a 30-day ban from the platform following controversial remarks about the US military. A video of her live stream, which has gone viral on X, captured her stating she hoped US soldiers would experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

In the clip, Frogan expressed, “I will never have any f—–g pity for any f—–g soldiers. US military? Boo f—–g who. One user commented, “She deserves this ban for 30 days because she’s an evil person to American soldiers that deserve to have PTSD.” Another added, “Finally LOL, well it’s deserved.
Frogan also remarked that those who recognize their past mistakes should not be entitled to PTSD, saying, “The US military that are like, yeah, you know I did this back then but now I know it’s wrong, like I am changed, f–k imperialism, f–k this, you don’t deserve the PTSD.”

In light of the controversy, Frogan issued an apology on X, acknowledging that her comments were poorly articulated. She clarified that her remarks were not aimed at all military personnel but specifically targeted those without remorse. “What I said was out of frustration as they are currently bombing my family in the name of ‘liberation’,” she explained. The Houthis have intensified attacks on vessels in the region, claiming retaliation for Israel’s Gaza operations. The US aims to counter this growing threat to maritime security.
</excerpt>

The US military has conducted strikes on the Iranian-backed Houthi group in Yemen, targeting 15 locations to safeguard “freedom of navigation” in the region. The Pentagon reported that aircraft and warships were utilized in these operations, leading to multiple explosions in major Yemeni cities, including the capital, Sanaa.

The Houthis have been responsible for approximately 100 attacks on vessels in the Red Sea since November, sinking two ships. They claim these actions are retaliation against Israel’s military operations in Gaza. The Central Command, overseeing US military actions in the Middle East, stated the strikes aimed at Houthi weapons systems, bases, and equipment.

In addition, Houthi-aligned media confirmed that Sanaa was among the cities targeted. On Monday, the Houthis announced they had downed a US-made MQ-9 Reaper drone over Yemen, a claim the US military acknowledged, confirming the loss of the unmanned aircraft.

Last week, the Pentagon reported a “complex attack” by the Houthis on US Navy ships in the region, although all weapons launched were intercepted. Sanaa has experienced relative calm in recent years, following a decrease in hostilities between the warring factions in Yemen.

In addition to their actions against ships in the Red Sea, the Houthis have launched missiles and drones targeting Israel. A drone strike from Yemen hit Tel Aviv in July, resulting in one death and ten injuries, while several missiles were fired at Israel, including an attempt on the main airport.

In response, Israel has conducted attacks on Houthi sites in Yemen. Earlier this year, the US, UK, and twelve other nations initiated Operation Prosperity Guardian to ensure the safety of shipping lanes in the Red Sea, amidst rising threats from the Houthis, who are part of a broader network of Iran-backed armed groups in the Middle East, including Hezbollah and Hamas.

“President Biden directed the US military to aid Israel’s defense against Iranian attacks and shoot down missiles that are targeting Israel,” read a statement from the White House. Additionally, the White House announced that Biden’s previously scheduled call with rabbis ahead of the Jewish high holiday season has been postponed.

The US had also intervened in April to defend Israel from a joint Iranian missile and drone attack, which was launched by Tehran in retaliation for an Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

The unconventional move sparked criticism and controversy, leading Tinder to remove the ad for violating its policies on violence and political messaging.
</excerpt>

In an unconventional move, the US military issued a stark warning to Iran and its proxy terror groups, cautioning them against taking up arms against America and its allies. The message was broadcast through Tinder, a popular dating app, and was reported by The Washington Post. The profiles, written in Arabic, emphasized that the US “will protect its partners in the face of threats from the Iranian regime and its proxies,” accompanied by images of US warplanes.

Surprising Choice of Platform Raises Eyebrows

The decision to use Tinder—a platform known for casual dating rather than political messaging—left many stunned. The app, famous for its “swipe right” and “swipe left” functions, became an unlikely venue for military communication. A US official, speaking to the Post, confirmed that the advertisement originated from CENTCOM, the United States Central Command.

Reactions and Controversy

The ad also caught the attention of Séamus Malekafzali, a freelance writer based in Lebanon, who posted on X (formerly Twitter) about encountering the CENTCOM message on Tinder. The post read, “Opened Tinder in Lebanon. Was greeted by an ad from CENTCOM saying in Arabic, ‘Do not take arms against the US and its partners,’ that F-16s and A-10s are already prepared, and that the US will ‘protect its partners in the face of threats from the Iranian regime and its agents.'”

Tinder Pulls the Plug

Following inquiries from The Washington Post, Tinder quickly removed the advertisement, stating it violated the company’s policies on violence and political messaging. A defense official clarified that the Department of Defense conducts military information operations in line with national security priorities and within the boundaries of US law and DOD policy.

Criticism and Concerns

The military’s choice of platform has sparked criticism from officials and academics, who argued that Tinder was an ineffective way to reach the intended audience. Some labeled the effort as “an unforced error or laziness.” Despite the backlash, the message sent a clear warning to Iran amid ongoing tensions, particularly regarding Iran’s threats against Israel following the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, an incident Israel has neither confirmed nor denied.

</excerpt>

US is significantly boosting its military presence in the Middle East in response to heightened regional tensions between Iran and Israel, following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt strike group, currently operating in the Gulf of Oman.

In addition to the carrier strike group, the Pentagon is sending a fighter squadron and additional warships, including destroyers and cruisers capable of ballistic missile defense, to the region helping Israel from any possible attacks by Iran and its proxies. The precise details of the warships involved have not been disclosed, though two US destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean participated in intercepting Iranian strikes against Israel in April.

The USS Wasp amphibious assault ship, already stationed in the region, is equipped with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and can facilitate the evacuation of US citizens from Lebanon if necessary. The US military’s commitment to defend Israel has been emphasized as “ironclad,” with missile defense forces on heightened alert.

Iran has vowed retaliation for the killing of Haniyeh, which occurred on July 31 in Tehran. Iran and its proxy in Gaza have blamed Israel for the assassination, although Israel has not confirmed involvement. The assassination followed the Israeli claim of having killed Fuad Shukr, a top military commander of Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Pentagon stated that the new deployments aim to “improve US force protection, increase support for the defense of Israel, and ensure preparedness for various contingencies.” This move comes amid ongoing tensions in the region, exacerbated by recent conflicts and threats.

Despite the increased military presence, Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh indicated that the US does not view escalation as inevitable, advocating for a ceasefire as a potential resolution. An Israeli delegation is scheduled to travel to Cairo for negotiations aimed at achieving a ceasefire and a hostage release deal.

The ongoing conflict began with a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which resulted in 1,200 deaths. Israel’s subsequent military operations in Gaza have claimed nearly 40,000 lives, according to Hamas-run health reports.

This marks the first attack by Hezbollah since the Israeli airstrike on Tuesday evening that killed Fuad Shukr, a senior commander within the Iran-backed militant group. Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, announced that operations would resume on Friday morning, escalating tensions in the region.

The group reported that it fired dozens of Katyusha rockets “in response to the Israeli enemy’s attack on the southern village of Shama that killed a number of civilians.” The Israeli military confirmed that its air force targeted the Hezbollah launcher responsible for the rockets shortly after the attack. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that only five of the rockets managed to enter Israel, and there were no reported casualties.

Israel Blames Lebanese Government for Hezbollah Attack

Israel has placed responsibility for the Hezbollah attack on the Lebanese government. In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Israeli government asserted, “We will not allow anyone to terrorize the people of Israel.” The statement underscores the broader geopolitical tensions involving Lebanon, Hezbollah, and Israel.

Northern Israel right now: we hold the Lebanese government responsible for EVERY single Hezbollah rocket fired toward Israel.

Assassinations in the Region Escalate Tensions

The death of Fuad Shukr was not the only high-profile assassination in the region this week. Hours after Shukr’s death, a strike in Tehran killed Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh, an ally of Hezbollah. Iran and Hamas have accused Israel of orchestrating the attack, although Israel has not commented on the incident. Additionally, Israel confirmed on Thursday that Mohammed Deif, the head of Hamas’ military wing, was killed in an airstrike in Gaza in July.

Hezbollah Leader Issues Stern Warning

In a virtual speech to mourners gathered around Shukur’s coffin in a Beirut suburb, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah declared, “We have entered a new phase that is different from the previous period.” Referring to the assassinations, Nasrallah questioned, “Do they expect that Hajj Ismail Haniyeh will be killed in Iran and Iran will remain silent?” He warned, “Laugh a bit and you will cry a lot,” signaling potential further escalation.

Biden Promises Increased US Military Support for Israel

In light of the escalating violence and threats from Iran-backed groups, US President Joe Biden assured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of “new defensive US military deployments.” The White House stated that Biden reaffirmed his commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. The conversation included discussions on bolstering Israel’s defense capabilities against threats such as ballistic missiles and drones.

Netanyahu, in response, declared on Thursday that Israel is maintaining a “very high level of preparedness” to respond to any potential reprisals following the recent assassinations of key Hamas and Hezbollah figures.

</excerpt>

The US military is investing $10 billion to modernize its forces in Japan, deploying advanced fighter jets to strengthen the US-Japan Alliance, enhance regional deterrence, and ensure stability in the Indo-Pacific. Over the next few years, the US will replace older aircraft models with fifth-generation F-35A fighters and new F-15EX jets at key bases.

Specifically, 48 F-35A fighters will replace 36 F-16s at Misawa Air Base in northern Japan, while 36 F-15EX jets will replace 48 older F-15C/D models at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa. The number of F-35B aircraft at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni will also be adjusted. This modernization demonstrates the US commitment to Japan’s defense and a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi highlighted the importance of the US-Japan alliance, especially given increased military activities by neighboring countries. Japan faces threats from China, Russia, and North Korea, including territorial disputes and North Korea’s missile program. Japan also monitors Taiwan closely, as it is crucial for Japan’s energy supply routes.

Okinawa, located about 450 miles from Taiwan, hosts a significant US military presence, including the 18th Wing at Kadena Air Base. The F-15EX jets will improve US deterrence with their advanced capabilities, including unparalleled weapons capacity and survivability. Analyst Peter Layton noted that these jets could carry long-range cruise missiles capable of striking deep into China.

The F-35As, the Air Force’s newest stealth fighters, will complement the F-15EXs. The F-35’s stealth and sensors will operate forward, relaying data to the F-15EXs, which will use their missile capacity for offensive operations. This synergy will enhance US air power in Japan.

These aircraft deployments are part of broader improvements to US forces in Japan, which include over 50,000 troops. Okinawa alone houses more than 25,000 U.S. military personnel and numerous installations, with 70% of US bases in Japan located there. Additionally, a newly redesignated Marine unit with advanced intelligence and anti-ship missile capabilities will be based in Japan, further strengthening the alliance’s deterrence and response capabilities.

Yemen’s Houthi militia has intensified its attacks on US military assets in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, targeting an American aircraft carrier, a destroyer, and three vessels, announced the group’s military spokesperson Yahya Saree on Saturday. The Iranian-backed group, controlling significant areas in Yemen, has been launching assaults on ships off its coast for months, citing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

According to Saree, the Houthis launched multiple missiles and drones at the US Military aircraft carrier Eisenhower, positioned north of the Red Sea. This marks the second such attack on the carrier within 24 hours. Additionally, a U.S. destroyer and the ABLIANI ship were targeted in the Red Sea, along with the MAINA ship, struck twice in both the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.

The escalating hostilities pose significant concerns over maritime security in the region and raise tensions between the Houthis and the United States. The Houthis’ actions further exacerbate the volatile situation in Yemen and the broader Middle East, adding to the complexities of ongoing conflicts and geopolitical rivalries.

</excerpt>

The most wanted senior Islamic State (ISIS) leader Bilal-al-Sudani was killed in a US counter-terrorism operation in northern Somalia, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed in a statement on Thursday.

No civilians were harmed during the operation that killed a number of other ISIS members in the assault operation that the US conducted on orders from President Joe Biden.

“On January 25, on orders from the President, the U.S. military conducted an assault operation in northern Somalia that resulted in the death of a number of ISIS members, including Bilal-al-Sudani, an ISIS leader in Somalia and a key facilitator for ISIS’s global network. Al-Sudani was responsible for fostering the growing presence of ISIS in Africa and for funding the group’s operations worldwide, including in Afghanistan,” the official release of the US Department of Defence quoted Austin as saying.

“This action leaves the United States and its partners safer and more secure, and it reflects our steadfast commitment to protecting Americans from the threat of terrorism at home and abroad. No civilians were harmed as a result of this operation. We are grateful to our extraordinary service members as well as our intelligence community and other interagency partners for their support to this successful counterterrorism operation,” Austin added.

Prior to last year’s end, US forces conducted an airstrike in Syria that resulted in the deaths of two senior ISIS figures, CNN reported.

Notably, in Somalia till date, the military operations have only paid heed to al-Shabaab fighters which are the dominant militant group in the region. According to the first official, al-Sudani received sanctions from the US Treasury in 2012 for facilitating foreign fighters’ travel to an al-Shabaab training camp and providing funding.
