</excerpt>

The toll of dead in Kerr County rose to 87 on Tuesday as rescue and search operations remained underway in the flood-affected central Texas, reports county officials worst affected by the calamity that has claimed over 100 lives.

Guadalupe River Overflows, Wreaks Havoc Across Texas Hill Country

Torrential rains overnight on Friday inundated the Guadalupe River, which broke its banks and claimed dozens of lives, leaving behind crushed heaps of wreckage, trees and automobiles. At least 56 adults and 30 children were killed in Kerr County, Sheriff Larry Leitha reported at a press conference, with over two dozen victims still unidentified. Authorities have yet to ascertain whether the 87th victim was an adult or child.

Some victims were on summer break at Camp Mystic along the banks of the river, and five kids and one camp counsellor were missing on Tuesday. Local authorities have been subjected to ire for whether or not they could have alerted people earlier about hazardous flash floods in Texas Hill Country.

Rescue Operations Continue Amid Dangerous Weather in Texas

Rescue teams from neighboring states and Mexico have joined local efforts to search for survivors, which have been hindered by thunderstorms. “The work is extremely treacherous, time-consuming,” Lieutenant Colonel Ben Baker of the Texas Game Wardens said at the press conference. “It’s dirty work. The water is still there.”

U.S. President Donald Trump plans to visit the devastated region this week, a spokesperson said.

Federal Relief Efforts Begin as Officials Warn of Further Risk

In the aftermath of the disaster, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has begun coordinating relief operations with Texas state officials. Temporary shelters have been set up in nearby counties for displaced residents, while medical teams continue to treat dozens for flood-related injuries, including hypothermia and trauma.

Experts have warned that the flood may go down as one of the deadliest natural disasters in the state’s history. Officials have urged people to avoid returning to flooded zones due to the risk of contaminated water and weakened infrastructure. The National Weather Service has issued continued warnings for central Texas as rain is expected to persist over the coming days.

</excerpt>

United States measles cases have already hit a record high of six years this year, Johns Hopkins University’s outbreak response center data demonstrated, as a decline in vaccination levels results in a new peak in the disease previously eradicated from the nation.

1,277 Cases Reported in 2025, Surpassing 2019 Record

The U.S. reported 1,277 cases of measles, the data revealed on Friday, breaking the previous record of 1,274 cases in 2019.

Measles was formally eliminated from the nation in 2000, which signifies that there were no local cases spreading within the nation that year. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continued to detect individual cases associated with international travel, and there has been an occurrence of outbreaks every year since elimination.

Falling Vaccination Rates Blamed for 2025 Outbreak

This year’s epidemic, one of the worst in the U.S., has mostly been fueled by a decline in vaccination rates, especially among children in states like Texas and New Mexico, where rates have declined well below the 95% herd immunity threshold.

Johns Hopkins statistics revealed 790 confirmed cases in Texas – the hub of the ongoing measles outbreak and 95 confirmed cases in New Mexico. CDC data is not yet complete as it is revised each Wednesday. Up to July 1, 38 jurisdictions had reported a total of 1,267 confirmed measles cases and three deaths, as reported by the CDC.

Slight Slowdown in Spread, According to CDC

Last week’s CDC statistics indicated that there has been a deceleration in spread of the infection, with it having spread to neighboring states.

There were 27 reported outbreaks in 2025, and 88% of outbreak-associated confirmed cases, as per CDC’s statistics.

Public health experts have called for public health officials to make urgent recommendations for highly effective vaccines. The measles vaccine is 97% effective after two doses, as per CDC statistics.

</excerpt>

Billionaire businessman Elon Musk publicly weighed in on the notion of a third party in the US following President Donald Trump’s signature ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ and after he supported a viral post calling for the same.

Elon Musk’s Third Party Pitch Likened to Tesla, SpaceX Ventures

The post, which got a positive reaction from Elon Musk, compared the idea of the Tesla CEO starting a third political party to his high-risk, high-reward ventures like Tesla and SpaceX.

“Elon starting a 3rd party is closely akin to Tesla & SpaceX. Low probability of success, but if successful it’ll completely change the game,” the X post suggested.

💯🇺🇸 https://t.co/8fUMWzfRYl

Elon Musk Floats ‘America Party’ in Independence Day Poll

Previously, Musk wrote on his social media site X about proposing the idea of a third party to compete against the two big ones the Democrats and the Republicans in United States politics.

“Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system! Should we create the America Party?” Musk asked his followers, attaching an interactive poll.

Rift With Trump Deepens Amid Budget Bill Signing

Musk’s potential for launching a new party came after a public rift with his onetime close buddy, US President Donald Trump, over the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” an ambitious bill that was approved by both the House and Senate of Congress on Thursday.

President Donald Trump will on Friday sign his signature tax and spending bill in an Independence Day ceremony replete with pomp, fireworks, and a flyover by the type of stealth bomber used to bomb Iran.

Trump announced the White House signing ceremony at 4:00 pm (2000 GMT) and said that pilots who conducted the bombing of Iran were among the invitees.

‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ Solidifies Trump’s Political Dominance

The legislation, which contains enormous new funding for Trump’s migrant deportation campaign, is the most recent in a string of huge political victories at home and abroad for the 79-year-old billionaire and highlights his dominance of both the Republican Party and US politics in general for the time being.

</excerpt>

The United States may be able to reach a trade agreement with India which will enable American businesses to compete in the Indian subcontinent and leave India with much lower tariffs, President Donald Trump told reporters on Tuesday, while expressing skepticism about reaching an agreement with Japan.

India Ready to Roll Back Trade Barriers

Trump informed journalists on board Air Force One that he thought India was prepared to roll back obstacles for U.S. businesses, which would set the stage for a deal avoiding the 26% tariff he announced on April 2, then suspended until July 9.

“Right now, India doesn’t accept anybody in. I think India is going to do that, if they do that, we’re going to have a deal for less, much less tariffs,” he said.

Progress in U.S.-India Trade Talks

Previously, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has informed Fox News that the U.S. and India are close to agreeing on a deal that will reduce tariffs on imports from America into the South Asian nation and keep India from facing levies from exploding next week.

“We are very close with India,” Bessent told Fox News in response to a question about progress on trade negotiations.

Indian officials prolonged a visit to Washington last week until Monday to attempt to come to terms on a trade agreement with President Donald Trump’s government and iron out outstanding issues on both sides, Indian government sources said.

U.S. Prioritizes India Over Japan for Trade Deal

A White House aide privy to the negotiations told that the Trump administration intends to give priority to obtaining trade agreements with nations such as India over Japan in the final days before the July 9 deadline.

India is among more than a dozen nations actively in the process of negotiating with the Trump administration to attempt to prevent a sharp jump in tariff rates on July 9, when a 90-day tariff lull comes to an end. India might experience its new “reciprocal” tariff rate increase to 27% from the present 10%.

U.S.-India negotiations have stalled due to differences over import tariffs for auto parts, steel, and agricultural products, prior to Trump’s deadline to impose retaliatory tariffs.

Jaishankar Hopes for Successful Outcome

“We are in the middle hopefully more than the middle of a very intricate trade negotiation,” Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told an event in New York on Monday.

“Obviously, my hope would be that we bring it to a successful conclusion. I cannot guarantee it, because there’s another party to that discussion,” said Jaishankar, who is in the U.S. for a meeting of the China-focused Quad grouping.

He said there “will have to be give and take” and both sides will need to meet in the middle.

Trump Doubtful About Japan Deal

Bessent explained to Fox News that each nation has an agenda for trade agreements, such as Japan, which Trump vented about on Monday and Tuesday.

Trump indicated that he was not considering extending the July 9 deadline and would just send letters announcing to nations the tariff rate they would receive.

“We’ve dealt with Japan. I’m not sure we’re going to make a deal. I doubt it,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he returned to Washington from a trip to Florida.

Trump Threatens Tariffs on Japanese Goods

Trump threatened to apply a tariff of 30% or 35% on Japanese imports – much higher than the 24% tariff rate Trump unveiled on April 2 and subsequently delayed until July 9.

He complained Japan was refusing to buy U.S.-grown rice, a Washington demand he called “an easy one,” and selling millions of automobiles in the United States.

“So what I’m going to do, is I’ll write them a letter saying we thank you very much, and we know you can’t do the kind of things that we need, and therefore you pay a 30%, 35% or whatever the numbers that we determine,” he said. So far, only Britain has negotiated a limited trade deal with the Trump administration, accepting a 10% U.S. tariff on many goods, including autos, in exchange for special access for aircraft engines and British beef.

</excerpt>

Buffalo Bill’s, one of the three establishments owned and run by Affinity Gaming in Primm, Nevada, will close on July 7. The Primm Valley Resort and the recently shuttered Whiskey Pete’s casino also belong to the company. This represents the third casino closure in the southern end of Los Angeles since 2020, including Terrible’s in Jean, which was formerly Goldstrike.

Social Media Breaks News of Shutdown of Casino

Las Vegas Locally broke the news on its social media page by writing, “The legendary Buffalo Bill’s Resort & Casino in Primm is closing next week, per @Vegas_Advantage. Everything is ruined.”

Raids by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) directed towards Hispanic communities residing in southern Los Angeles have been shaking the neighborhood over recent times. This has led to the people cutting down on leaving their homes for non-necessary tasks, a shift that has largely affected casinos like Buffalo Bill’s, which depended on these individuals as their primary customers.

Closure Linked to Immigration Raids and COVID Fallout

Since an official announcement for the closure has not been made by the company, business being disrupted due to immigration raids and the COVID-19 pandemic is mostly suspected to be the cause.

The final day for members to make reservations at Buffalo Bill’s will be July 6. After that, every other day has been blacked out on the calendar by the company, and the system automatically shows the customer a message to attempt to book a room at the Primm Valley Resort.

Possible Temporary Reopenings During Festival Season for Casino

The next bookings available at Buffalo Bill’s can be a four-day weekend in November. The hotel and casino could be reopened during that time to accommodate the overflow of customers traveling into the city for a festival in nearby Goodsprings, Nevada. The casino floor will possibly reopen on a temporary basis on concert nights at Primm. After closure, the closest concert is on August 30.

Primm Valley Resort to Continue Operations

The Primm Valley Resort will still have slots and video poker alone, as all the table games, electronic table games, restaurants, and the hotel closed in December 2022. The Bonnie & Clyde cars that are displayed now at Buffalo Bill’s food court will be relocated to the Primm Valley Resort after closure. Affinity Gaming recently invested in a huge remodeling of the Primm Valley Resort to drive more business and made some game changes as well.

After this shut-down, Primm Valley Resort will be the only casino running close to the California state line on Interstate 15.

</excerpt>

Minnesota encountered bad weather on Wednesday when the National Weather Service (NWS) Twin Cities/Chanhassen issued several tornado warnings and flash flood warnings in south-central and east-central areas, including Albert Lea, Mankato, Minneapolis, and Rochester.

Humid Air Mass Triggers Storm Hazards Across Minnesota

The warnings, fueled by a humid, unstable air mass, mark increased tornado and flooding hazards that place residents in tension throughout an unstable storm season, as stated in the NWS press release.

At 4:16 PM CDT, a tornado warning was still in effect for northeastern Blue Earth and southeastern Le Sueur counties, around Mankato, with a severe thunderstorm that could produce a tornado moving northeast at 27 knots near Madison Lake, according to NWS.

Waterville, Elysian, Sakatah Lake Under Risk

Radar-indicated spin was dangerous for Waterville, Elysian, and Sakatah Lake State Park, including hazards of flying objects, mobile home loss, and tree damage. A tornado warning for northwestern Freeborn and southwestern Steele counties, including Albert Lea, was previously canceled by 4:19 PM as the storm dissipated, according to NWS.

Another individual warning close to Albert Lea earlier corroborated a tornado close to Hartland, traveling northeast at 35 mph. Rochester and the surrounding Olmsted County were under a tornado watch until 10 PM, with risk for funnel clouds.

Flash Flood Warnings for Twin Cities Metro and Beyond

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flash flood warning at 3:51 PM for southeastern Anoka, Hennepin, Ramsey, and parts of Carver and Washington counties, including Minneapolis and St. Paul, effective until 7:45 PM.

Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms dropping 1–2 inches of rain per hour, leading to urban flooding in low-lying areas such as highways and underpasses. Areas such as Bloomington, Brooklyn Park, and Woodbury experienced flooded roads, with an additional 1–3 inches predicted.

Another flood warning at 3:02 PM targeted Minneapolis and St. Paul, warning of ponding water affecting the evening commute, per NWS. Renville County saw 3–5 inches of rain, triggering a flood warning until 5:45 PM.

After India conducted Operation Sindoor on Pakistani soil last month, Pakistan has been aiming to bolster its nuclear arsenal with support from China. ‘If Pakistan successfully develops such a missile, Washington would classify the country as a nuclear adversary,’ the report said, citing US officials. Pakistan possesses around 170 nuclear warheads and has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The treaty is aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and promoting peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Currently Russia, China and North Korea are considered adversarial to America. Pakistan’s nuclear ambitions have long been a concern for Washington, especially as it maintains a close relationship with China, which has its own growing nuclear and missile arsenal. Washington has expressed concern over Pakistan’s expanding nuclear stockpile, fearing that an ICBM could destabilise not just the region, but also global security.

The maximum range of ICBMs varies from 7,000 to 16,000 kilometres. ICBMs can be launched in different ways – from underground missile silos, heavy trucks, mobile launchers on rails or submarines. As per the Federation of American Scientists these weapons can hit targets virtually anywhere in the world.

</excerpt>

The rift between US President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk deepened on Friday, with Trump unleashing scathing attacks against his former ally and dismissing any hope of reconciliation. Speaking in a series of media interviews, Trump went so far as to claim Musk is “losing his mind,” marking a sharp turn in what was once a seemingly supportive relationship.

The clash escalated after Musk accused Trump of being named in the infamous “Epstein files,” referring to documents connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In response, Trump posted a denial on his TruthSocial platform, citing a statement from Epstein’s former criminal defence attorney, David Schoen. “I can say authoritatively, unequivocally and definitively that [Epstein] had no information to hurt President Trump,” Schoen said. “I specifically asked him!”

Trump: “I’m Not Interested in Talking to Elon”

Trump, in multiple phone conversations with US media outlets, doubled down on his anger. During a conversation with ABC News, when asked whether there was any chance of peace between the two billionaires, Trump replied bluntly: “You mean the man who has lost his mind?”

He added, “not particularly,” when asked about reconnecting with Musk.

In another conversation with CNN, Trump took a jab at the tech mogul’s mental state. “I’m not even thinking about Elon. He’s got a problem. The poor guy’s got a problem.”

Interestingly, while speaking to Politico, Trump contradicted himself slightly by saying, “the relationship with Musk was going very well, never done better.”

Musk Teases New Political Party, Trump Unbothered

Musk, known for his unpredictable online presence, hinted at launching a new centrist political party aimed at representing “the 80 per cent in the middle.” He claimed his financial muscle would allow him to heavily fund this political venture.

The verbal duel took another turn when hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman urged the two to make peace “for the benefit of our great country.” Musk seemed receptive, responding with a symbolic olive branch. However, Susie Wiles, White House Chief of Staff, promptly dismissed any chance of dialogue, telling NBC News, “There are no plans” for a call between the two men.

From Friends to Foes Over “Big Beautiful Bill”

The animosity traces back to Musk’s harsh criticism of Trump’s controversial tax and spending plan — dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill.” Musk labeled it a “disgusting abomination,” citing concerns that it would balloon the national debt by $2.4 trillion and eliminate health insurance for over 10 million Americans.

Trump, in turn, expressed frustration: “Very disappointed in Elon,”he said, setting off the current spiral of insults and accusations.

</excerpt>

South Africa has condemned the US as reports suggest Washington may receive white Afrikaners as refugees as early as next week.

A briefing document seen by the BBC’s US partner CBS refers to the possible resettlement as a “priority” of President Donald Trump’s administration, but the White House has yet to confirm publicly.

Government of South Africa Responds to Trump Administration

In a statement released on Friday, South Africa’s foreign ministry labeled the alleged move as “politically motivated” and aimed at discrediting South Africa’s “constitutional democracy”.

Last February, Trump labeled Afrikaners as victims of “racial discrimination” in an executive order, leaving the door open for them to resettle in the US.

Concerns Over Vetting and Alleged Discrimination

The South African government said it would not block the selectees from leaving for resettlement, but it asked the US to confirm that it had thoroughly screened the individuals and that they did not face any outstanding criminal charges.

The statement also claimed that accusations of discrimination against the nation’s white minority lacked foundation, and crime records did not show that any racial group was being specifically targeted in violent farm crimes.

Debate Over White Farmer Rights and US Policy

Certain organizations espousing the rights of white farmers have claimed they are being intentionally killed based on race.

A US state department spokesman told the BBC they were interviewing those interested in resettlement in the US and giving preference to “Afrikaners in South Africa who are victims of unfair racial discrimination”. They did not state when the resettlement would commence.

Land Seizure Allegations Against South Africa

The Trump administration has also accused South Africa of expropriating land from white farmers without compensation, a charge Pretoria has consistently rejected.

Elon Musk, one of the key advisers to the Trump administration and who spent his youth in South Africa under apartheid, has been one of the strongest critics of Pretoria, accusing it of perpetrating a “genocide” against white farmers.

US officials have organized a press ceremony on Monday at Virginia’s Dulles airport to receive the group, the documents obtained by CBS reveal. An initial 54 Afrikaners will arrive as part of the first group, US media report.

Controversy Over US Asylum Policy Shift

The decision to accept South Africans as refugees comes as the Trump administration has halted nearly all migrant asylum claims.

In February, South Africa condemned Trump’s executive order making the US available for the resettlement of white Afrikaners, stating in a statement that “it is ironic” the US is welcoming to accept a group “that remains amongst the most economically privileged” while refusing vulnerable individuals from elsewhere in the world asylum.

What You Need to Know Before the May 7 Deadline

<excerpt>May 7 marks the REAL ID deadline. Learn what happens if you don’t have one and how to avoid last-minute travel disruptions.
</excerpt>

The deadline to acquire a REAL ID is nearing, following close to two decades of delays and adjournments.

Though initially told you would no longer be allowed to fly in the United States without a REAL ID or alternative TSA-approved means of identification come May 7, the top official at Homeland Security told Travelers Tuesday you will still be able to travel, but best be prepared to go through further procedures at TSA.

If you still haven’t obtained your REAL ID and are unsure about how to do so, or wondering why you even need one at all, here are a few things you should know:

What is a REAL ID?

It’s a federal compliant state-issued license or identification card that the DHS says is a more secure type of identification. That’s because it takes more personal documents to obtain a REAL ID than what’s needed to get an ordinary license.

In addition to needing a REAL ID to travel within the United States, you will also need one in order to enter certain federal buildings and facilities.

Why is this happening?

When the REAL ID Act was signed into law in 2005, it implemented a suggestion from the 9/11 Commission that the government establish security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and IDs.

“REAL ID is a coordinated effort by the federal government to improve the reliability and accuracy of driver’s licenses and identification cards,” John Essig, the Transportation Security Administration’s Security Director for airports in the New York City region said in a press release on April 3. “The improvements are intended to inhibit terrorists’ ability to evade detection by using fraudulent identification.”

The REAL ID Act was supposed to begin rolling out in 2008, “but has faced repeated delays due to state implementation challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Nina Ruggiero, senior editorial director for Travel Leisure. “The combination of varying state processes and shifting deadlines has added to the overall confusion around REAL IDs and likely led some travelers to take the deadlines less seriously.”

How do I know if I already have a REAL ID?

If you’ve gotten a new ID in the last few years, it could already be REAL ID-compliant.

“I also hear from travelers who are confused as to whether or not they already have a REAL ID,” Ruggiero said. “Some people who have recently renewed their license may already have a compliant ID and not know it,” so you may want to double-check yours before starting the process.

A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license has a symbol ( in most states, a star ) in the top corner of the card.

If you reside in Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont or Washington, you might have an “enhanced″ ID card instead, which allows you to fly within the country and travel across land and sea borders into Mexico and Canada from the US. It doesn’t, however, enable you to fly into either of those nations.

There will be an American flag symbol, as well as the term “enhanced” in the top center of the card.

If I don’t have a REAL ID, how do I get one?

The states require different things, so you’ll need to go to your state’s driver’s licensing agency website to learn specifically what you’ll need to do, including whether or not you’ll need an appointment at a DMV and what documents you’ll need to bring when you arrive.

What is going to happen on May 7?

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem declared on Tuesday that those who are still without an ID that meets the REAL ID law “may be routed to another line, have another step.”

Noem also announced that security checkpoints will be processing passports and tribal identification when the deadline arrives Wednesday instead of a REAL ID.

“But people will be allowed to fly,” she said. “We will make sure it’s as seamless as possible.”

The deadline has already been postponed so many times. Might it be postponed once more?

In mid-April, a few Kentucky state senators requested the agency postpone the application of the new requirements once more. They argued that the state has few appointments for individuals to apply for the new cards and that there was a rush to comply with the May 7 deadline.

The agency, though, does not plan to postpone the REAL ID deadline again, TSA spokesperson Dan Velez explained to the AP.

Through late April, 81% of passengers at TSA checkpoints were showing acceptable IDs, such as a state-issued REAL ID, DHS reported.

</excerpt>

The UK, which is targeting to conclude its crypto rules by 2026, has ruled out establishing a national crypto reserve. The Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Emma Reynolds, discussed the nation’s position on building a stockpile of cryptocurrency at the Financial Times Digital Asset Summit in London on Tuesday. The announcement follows the New York Department of Financial Services (DFS) and the Bank of England (BoE) revealing a transatlantic regulatory swap to “harmonise” digital asset law in January this year.

Crypto Hoarding Not on UK Agenda

Reynolds explained that hoarding crypto does not suit the UK market, so the nation excluded such a move from its crypto agenda at the moment, Decrypt reported. She did not comment on why the idea was rejected.

US President Donald Trump made history when he announced two strategic cryptocurrency reserves earlier this year. While one will be committed to building Bitcoin, the oldest and most costly crypto asset, the other will be accumulating altcoins. The US has chosen to invest seized crypto assets in such reserves instead of spending taxpayers’ money on new tokens. As of March, it is estimated that Bitcoin has more than 200,000 BTC tokens valued at more than $17 billion (approximately Rs. 1,53,161 crore).

Global Reaction to US Crypto Strategy

Although the UK has chosen not to follow suit in this sphere, President Trump’s move was able to stimulate discussions regarding crypto reserves across the globe. Discussions on following US’ footsteps have found traction in countries such as the Czech Republic and Hong Kong.

UK and US: Crypto Market Volatility Deters Many Nations

The instability of the crypto market, though, still deters most countries from associating crypto with their national reserves. The Swiss National Bank earlier in March dismissed the notion of stockpiling crypto. Poland and Japan have also been said to have rejected the inclusion of crypto in the list of their respective reserved assets.

Last month, Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal, while speaking to Gadgets 360, recommended that India think about investing small amounts in crypto reserves, but financial analyst Nemin Shah added that there was no need for the nation to hurry into the experiment.

</excerpt>

Amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday. The outreach comes as Washington attempts to ease the strain between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

According to reports, Rubio is also expected to speak with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar soon. The diplomatic push underscores growing international concern over the potential escalation in the region.

During the call, Prime Minister Sharif alleged that India was engaging in “escalatory and provocative behavior,” and warned that such actions could undermine Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts. “India’s provocations would only serve to distract Pakistan from its ongoing efforts to defeat terrorism, particularly from militant groups,” AFP quoted Sharif as saying, citing a statement released by his office.

The United States has been closely monitoring the situation. On Sunday, a State Department spokesperson said, “We are reaching out to both parties, and telling, of course, them to not escalate the situation,” quoting Rubio. The spokesperson added that the US was communicating with both sides at multiple levels and urged them to work towards a “responsible solution.”

Although Washington publicly condemned the Pahalgam attack—which claimed the lives of 26 people—with both President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance expressing support for India, the US has refrained from directly criticizing Pakistan.

India has squarely blamed Pakistan for orchestrating the terror strike, an accusation Islamabad has denied. Pakistan has instead called for a neutral, independent investigation into the incident.

In the aftermath of the attack, India suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty that governs water-sharing from the Indus River and its tributaries. In retaliation, Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian flights. Border clashes were also reported as tensions mounted along the Line of Control.

While Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice, Pakistan’s Defence Minister warned of a possible Indian military incursion, describing it as “imminent.”

Washington’s strategic interests in the region have become more complex in recent years. As it seeks to counter China’s growing influence, India has emerged as a vital partner. Meanwhile, Pakistan, though still a US ally, has seen its strategic relevance wane since the American military withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.

As both sides dig in their heels, the international community watches closely—hoping diplomacy prevails over confrontation.

FSU Shooter Identified as Deputy’s Son

<excerpt>Son of a Leon County Sheriff deputy named Phoenix Ikner identified as the shooter in the FSU campus attack.
</excerpt>

Phoenix Ikner was named as the shooter in the Florida State University (FSU) shooting, officials confirmed at a Thursday night press conference. The 20-year-old is the son of a Leon County Sheriff’s deputy Jessica Ikner and a member of the Leon County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) Youth Advisory Council. Police reported that Phoenix Ikner employed a deputy’s gun in the shooting, and the gun was found at the scene.

Gun Linked to Suspect’s Mother

Authorities think the suspect’s mother legally bought one of her old service guns, which had become personal property by the time of the shooting.

“This event is tragic in more ways than you people in the audience could ever fathom from a law enforcement perspective,” Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil said at the press conference. “But I will tell you this, we will make sure that we do everything we can to prosecute and make sure that we send a message to folks that this will never be tolerated here in Leon County, and I dare say, across this state and across this nation.”

Online Activity and Background of the Suspect

Previously, CNN indicated that the suspect was a young Tallahassee man who had lived in the area.

Soon after the authorities named the suspect, purported social media accounts attributed to Ikner started circulating on the internet. Screenshots of X posts seemed to depict him at anti-Trump rallies around the FSU campus.

FSU Shooting Timeline and Response

The shooting was initially reported around 12:30 p.m. EDT on Thursday. At 4:10 p.m., the Tallahassee Police Department posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the FSU campus “has been secured.”

“Multiple law enforcement agencies remain on site for the ongoing investigation,” the department wrote. “The Student Union & surrounding area are still considered an active crime scene. Individuals should not return to the area for any reason.”

Police added that “busing is underway to help students reach the reunification point at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.”

Learn about extensions, tips & deadlines.
</excerpt>

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) expects almost 140 million Americans to file their federal income tax returns for the 2024 tax year by the customary deadline of Tuesday, April 15, 2025. Through April 4, the agency had processed more than 101 million returns, reflecting a smooth rate of filings.

Tax Filing Deadline: April 15, 2025

For most taxpayers, the filing deadline for federal income tax returns is April 15, 2025. If April 15 is a weekend or legal holiday, the date is pushed to the next business day. It is very important that taxpayers file on time in order to escape penalties and interest.

Automatic Extensions for Disaster-Affected Areas

Taxpayers in federally proclaimed disaster areas have been provided with automatic extensions on filing and payment of their 2024 tax. For example, taxpayers from states such as Florida, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Tennessee, and certain portions of Virginia, have until May 1, 2025, to both file and make payments. Kentucky residents have a deadline of November 3, 2025, due to the magnitude of the disaster.

How to Ask for a Filing Extension

Taxpayers who require additional time to file may apply for an extension by filing Form 4868 on or before April 15. The extension provides six extra months to file, advancing the deadline to October 15, 2025. This extension is for the filing deadline only and not for the payment deadline. Taxes due are still required to be paid by April 15 in order to prevent penalties and interest.

Tips for Filing Your Taxes

File Electronically: Utilizing e-filing procedures can help speed up processing of your return and refund.

Consider Direct Deposit: Taking direct deposit can accelerate the processing of any refunds.

Seek Help if Needed: If you’re not confident about your tax status, try consulting a tax professional to make sure everything is accurate and optimizes potential refunds.

Reports suggest the White House plans to offer Greenlanders financial incentives exceeding Denmark’s current subsidies to gain support for the move.
</excerpt>

The White House is reportedly assessing the financial implications of acquiring Greenland, according to a report by The Washington Post. The evaluation includes the cost of providing government services to Greenland’s population of approximately 55,000 and the potential revenue from its natural resources, such as oil and rare earth minerals.

US President Donald Trump has expressed strong interest in annexing Greenland, along with other territories like Canada, the Panama Canal, and the Gaza Strip. Reports suggest that the administration is considering offering Greenlanders financial incentives exceeding the $600 million annual subsidy currently provided by Denmark.

A White House official, speaking to The Washington Post, stated, “This is a lot higher than that. The point is, ‘We’ll pay you more than Denmark does.’ There is a discussion about what would be the cost-benefit to the United States of America if we were to acquire Greenland.” The official further emphasized that the plan under review does not involve forced occupation but instead considers the possibility of a democratic vote supporting US control.

The report follows Vice President JD Vance’s recent visit to Greenland, where he advocated for US governance. He criticized Denmark’s handling of the island and highlighted security concerns related to Russian and Chinese activities in the Arctic. “Our message to Denmark is very simple. You have not done a good job by the people of Greenland,” Vance stated.

The situation continues to unfold as discussions over Greenland’s future gain international attention.

</excerpt>

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized the media for its persistent coverage of the Signal chat leak scandal involving top officials from his administration. In a TruthSocial post on Sunday, Trump praised Senator Markwayne Mullin, a Republican and Senate Armed Services Committee member, for pushing back against NBC News’ questions on the matter.

“A GREAT job by Senator Markwayne Mullin on beating back Kristen Welker’s, and the Radical Left’s Witch Hunt, on the never-ending Signal story,” Trump stated. “They just don’t stop – Over and over they go!”

The controversy erupted after it was revealed that The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, was accidentally added to a Signal group chat where top officials discussed a planned attack on Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and other Trump officials have insisted that no classified information was disclosed. However, a second round of screenshots released by The Atlantic reportedly showed Hegseth detailing the attack’s timing, location, and weaponry.

Trump Downplays the Scandal

Trump dismissed the leak, calling it “not a big deal,” and urged the media to shift focus. Democrats, however, have demanded a thorough investigation into the incident.

“This story and narrative is so old and boring, but only used because we are having the most successful ‘First One Hundred Presidential Days’ in the history of America, and they can’t find anything else to talk about,” Trump wrote.

He further criticized the press, stating, “The Fake News Media has the lowest Approval Ratings in history, and for good reason.”

Trump’s remarks followed a Politico report suggesting that Vice President JD Vance and senior advisers recommended that Trump fire National Security Adviser Mike Waltz over the mishap. Waltz had inadvertently added The Atlantic’s editor to the group chat, sparking the controversy.

</excerpt>

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump of the United States of America accused India, the European Union, Mexico, Brazil, and other countries of having trade practices that are unfair to the United States. He also specified that “reciprocal tariffs” will be enforced beginning on April 2. In his statement, Trump emphasised that this action will produce considerable cash for the United States of America and create employment. He also stated that the country has been taken advantage of for decades, but that it will no longer allow this behaviour. Emphasising the inequity of the system, Trump stated, “This system is not fair to the United States and never was hence we will impose tariffs on other countries in response to the tariffs they impose on us”.

WHAT IS TARIFF?
Tariffs apply to foreign imports. Companies that import commodities pay taxes to the government. Tariffs are usually a proportion of product value. For example, a $10 foreign product costs $3 more due to a 30% tax. Companies may pass on tariff costs to customers. US products tariffs are usually lower than others. The extra taxes and tariffs on international imports Trump has hinted may begin on April 2 might raise costs for US and global consumers, economists say.

INDIA’S STANCE SO FAR
Indian officials are examining strategies to reduce tariffs on various imports, such as cars and chemicals, as a response to US President Donald Trump’s proposed reciprocal tariffs, according to sources familiar with the situation, as reported by Bloomberg. Officials in New Delhi are engaged in discussions regarding the potential reduction of duties on automobiles, select agricultural products, chemicals, essential pharmaceuticals, and specific medical devices and electronics. Sources indicate that these individuals prefer to remain anonymous as the plans have not yet been finalised. With weeks until Trump’s retaliatory tariffs, trade minister Piyush Goyal went to the US a few days ago to negotiate trade. Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the U.S. and promised to start a trade pact by autumn 2025, aiming for $500 billion in bilateral commerce by 2030.
India is willing to drop tariffs on industrial exports like cars and chemicals but not on agricultural products, which would hurt millions of impoverished farmers. India has dropped duties on high-end motorbikes from 50% to 30% and 100% on bourbon whisky from 150% to reduce trade tensions, while vowing to examine other tariffs, increase energy imports, and buy more defence equipment.

INDIA- US: POLITICAL RELATIONS SO FAR
The relationship between India and the US is characterised by complexity. Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee characterised the two nations as “natural allies,” indicating a significant alignment of values and geopolitical interests. President Barack Obama characterised the relationship between India and the United States as “a defining partnership of the 21st century.” President Joe Biden modified it by adding the definite article “the”. In his 2016 address to the joint session of the US Congress, Modi stated that the “relationship has overcome the hesitations of history,” indicating a shift towards a more open and committed partnership between the two nations. Despite their differences on various issues, the similarities between the two nations significantly surpass the areas of disagreement. India and the US maintained a stable relationship during the first Trump presidency. The notable parallels in approach and messaging between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, particularly their emphasis on the theme of national greatness, played a significant role in fostering their personal rapport.

IMPACT OF RECIPROCAL TARIFFS
Since Trump took office, taxes on Chinese imports have raised medication raw material prices by 20%. Pharmaceutics are India’s largest export, and generics are important in the US. Any reciprocal levies by the US would raise generic and speciality drug prices, hurting millions of Americans. A major concern has arisen about the healthcare sector of the US. The United States is significantly dependent on Indian generic pharmaceuticals, with around fifty percent of all generic medications utilised in the US sourced from India. This has led to substantial savings for the US healthcare system, with estimates indicating that Indian generics saved the US $219 billion in 2022, according to research by consulting company IQVIA.

WHAT WILL THE RECIPROCAL TARIFF MEAN FOR INDIA
Experts think India might export more technology, electronics, and jewellery to America due to Trump’s 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada and China’s 10% tariff. The US and India seek to increase their economic dominance in the Indo-Pacific and challenge China. The time and incentives are right for these two leaders to make a major deal.
India is rushing to finish its Bilateral Trade Agreement with the US, balancing its concerns with Washington’s expectations. The government is creating a list of commodities where India will decrease tariffs to avoid retaliatory tariffs.
Trump said India pledged tariff cuts a few days ago. US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said the US wants to negotiate a broad-based trade pact and discuss products individually because it may take years to finalise. India had hoped for an exception, but Trump has frequently emphasised that India’s high tariff system will not be favoured.
In conclusion, both the United States and India must acknowledge the strategic and economic significance they provide one another and strive for a balanced trading partnership. As two of the world’s major democracies with expanding economic relations, it is imperative that they participate in transparent and productive discourse to resolve issues like tariffs and trade policy. Instead of permitting protectionist policies to generate discord, both countries should seek avenues to augment collaboration, diminish trade obstacles, and cultivate a relationship advantageous to enterprises and consumers alike. A cooperative strategy will enhance economic connections and fortify the expanding geopolitical partnership between the two states.

Authorities rushed him to the hospital, sparking renewed safety concerns in the city.
</excerpt>

A 45-year-old man set himself ablaze in the heart of Times Square on Sunday, in a shocking incident that left bystanders stunned. The self-immolation occurred just months after a deadly arson attack in a subway car claimed the life of a woman.

Man Engulfed in Flames, Rushed to Hospital

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), officers discovered the man engulfed in flames at approximately 4 AM (local time). Emergency responders quickly intervened and transported him to a nearby hospital, where he is currently in stable condition.

Eyewitness accounts and video footage from the scene reveal the man, shirtless and severely burned, running nearly 100 feet westward while on fire. A good Samaritan jumped out of a car and used a powder fire extinguisher to put out the flames. Authorities reported that the accelerant used in the incident was stored in a Patrón tequila bottle, but it remains unclear whether the act was self-inflicted or if foul play was involved. The assailant, if any, allegedly fled the scene.

This incident has further fueled concerns about street violence in New York, a major issue in the city’s upcoming mayoral elections. Former governor Andrew Cuomo described the city as being “out of control” and pledged to deploy 5,000 additional police officers if elected. In contrast, current Mayor Eric Adams dismissed the notion that police shortages were the root cause of crime and instead pointed to bail reforms introduced during Cuomo’s administration.

Despite these debates, official statistics indicate a significant drop in crime rates across the city. “Stop saying our city is in ‘chaos and crisis’! It is not,” Adams declared last week.

The incident in Times Square comes just three months after a tragic arson attack in a New York subway car. In that case, 57-year-old Debrina Kawam lost her life after being set on fire. Sebastian Zapeta, a Guatemalan migrant worker, was arrested hours later and charged with murder and arson.

Police reports revealed that Zapeta did not flee the scene and was found with a lighter in his pocket. “Lighting another human being on fire and watching them burn alive reflects a level of evil that cannot be tolerated,” the mayor’s office said in a statement following Kawam’s death.

His remarks sparked a heated debate on US-France relations.
</excerpt>

As US President Donald Trump intensifies trade tensions with Europe, a French politician has sparked a heated debate by suggesting that France should take back the Statue of Liberty—a historic gift to the United States.

France Fires Back at US Tariff Threats

Raphaël Glucksmann, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from the Socialists and Democrats group, strongly criticised Trump’s economic policies, particularly his threats of high tariffs on European goods. Speaking at a party convention, Glucksmann sarcastically proposed that since the US appears to be moving away from democratic values, France should reclaim its iconic gift.

“We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently, you despise it. So it will be just fine here at home,” he remarked, as reported by Politico. His comments seemed to reference Washington’s decision to pause aid to Ukraine and Trump’s warming ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Glucksmann’s Bold Remarks on US Jobs and Research

Adding to his provocative statements, Glucksmann suggested that France could benefit from Trump’s job cuts. He invited American professionals, particularly researchers dismissed under Trump’s administration, to move to France and contribute to its economy.

“If you want to fire your best researchers, if you want to dismiss the people who made your country a global powerhouse, we’ll gladly welcome them here,” he declared.

A Symbol of US-French Relations Under Scrutiny

The Statue of Liberty, unveiled in New York Harbor in 1886, was a gift from France to celebrate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. Designed by French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, the statue has long been a symbol of freedom and democracy.

While France has its own smaller replica of the monument along the Seine River in Paris, Glucksmann’s suggestion, though clearly symbolic, highlights the growing strain in US-France relations amid Trump’s protectionist policies.

French MEP Criticizes Trump and Musk’s Influence

Glucksmann also took aim at far-right leaders in France, accusing them of being “a fan club” for both Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, who has played a key role in shaping the US president’s economic strategies.

As trade disputes and political tensions escalate, Glucksmann’s remarks reflect a broader European frustration with the current US administration, further complicating diplomatic ties between the two longtime allies.

The White House has released an image of US President Donald Trump overseeing a deadly airstrike against Houthi rebels in Yemen. The strike, which Trump described as unleashing “hell” on the Iran-backed militant group, has resulted in at least 31 deaths.

On Saturday, Trump announced that he had authorized the airstrike, marking a significant escalation in the conflict. The White House later shared an image of Trump dressed in golfing attire, wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat with his signature on the brim, along with a black headset. He was seen monitoring the strike on television.

Also present during the operation were National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who were pictured alongside Trump as the situation unfolded.

Following the strike, the Houthi rebel group condemned the attack, calling it a “war crime.” The death toll, confirmed by Houthi-run health authorities on Al-Masirah TV, has reached 31. In response, the group warned of further escalation, stating, “Our Yemeni armed forces are fully prepared to respond to escalation with escalation.”

Iran also condemned the US airstrike, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stating, “The United States government has no authority or business dictating Iranian foreign policy,” while urging Washington to stop its military operations in Yemen.

Officials stated that this was part of ongoing efforts to maintain diplomatic communication between the two nations.

Trump further justified the strike in a statement on his Truth Social platform, condemning the Houthis for their recent attacks in the Red Sea. “They have waged an unrelenting campaign of piracy, violence, and terrorism against American and other ships, aircraft, and drones,” he wrote.

As tensions over land policies and racial rhetoric escalate, diplomatic relations severely deteriorate.
</excerpt>

In a bold move on Friday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that South Africa’s ambassador to Washington, Ebrahim Rasool, has been declared persona non grata. Rubio’s statement on X (formerly Twitter) accused Rasool of “hating America” and US President Donald Trump, asserting that “South Africa’s Ambassador to the United States is no longer welcome in our great country.”

Rising Diplomatic Tensions

Rubio’s expulsion of Rasool comes as relations between Washington and Pretoria grow increasingly strained. Earlier this year, President Trump froze US aid to South Africa over concerns that local laws allowed for the expropriation of land from white farmers. Recently, Trump escalated the issue by inviting South African farmers to relocate to the United States, promising them a “rapid pathway to citizenship” amid claims of land confiscation by the South African government.

Controversial Rhetoric and Accusations

In a separate twist, a Breitbart article shared by Rubio detailed controversial remarks made by Rasool at a foreign policy seminar. According to the report, Rasool attributed President Trump’s “disrespect” for the global order to white supremacy and suggested that the Make America Great Again movement was a reaction to increasing diversity in the US. Rasool, an anti-apartheid activist in his youth, has also criticized Israel’s actions in the Gaza conflict, further fueling diplomatic friction.

Allies Weigh In

Adding fuel to the fire, South African-born billionaire Elon Musk—one of Trump’s close allies—has openly criticized President Cyril Ramaphosa’s land policies as “openly racist.” Land ownership remains a highly sensitive issue in South Africa, where much of the farmland is still controlled by white farmers, and the government is under mounting pressure to implement reforms.

At a recent G20 summit, President Ramaphosa recalled having a “wonderful” call with Trump after his inauguration, but noted that relations between the two countries “seemed to go a little bit off the rails” afterward.

US military aid resumes if Russia agrees, raising global hopes.
</excerpt>

After high-level talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine has signaled its readiness to accept a US-proposed ceasefire deal aimed at providing temporary relief in its war with Russia. However, the deal’s implementation now hinges on Moscow’s agreement.

Key Terms of the Ceasefire Proposal

The proposed agreement calls for an immediate 30-day ceasefire covering all active battlefronts—land, air, and sea. The arrangement is designed to be extendable upon mutual consent and includes the resumption of US military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. Importantly, the deal does not address territorial concessions, a long-standing sticking point in previous negotiations, where Ukraine has demanded the return of occupied territories.

Reactions from Ukraine and the US

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Kyiv is prepared to take this step, stating, “We are ready to take this step,” but stressed that it will only work if Russia agrees. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio added, “The ball is now in Russia’s court.” US President Donald Trump echoed the sentiment, affirming his commitment to ending the war, “We want to get the Ukraine war over with.”

Humanitarian Measures and Economic Support

In addition to halting military operations, the joint statement outlining the ceasefire includes several humanitarian provisions:

Prisoner Exchange and Civilian Release: Measures to swap prisoners of war and release detained civilians.

Repatriation of Ukrainian Children: Steps to return Ukrainian children forcibly relocated to Russia.

Economic Stability Initiatives: A revival of a critical deal concerning Ukraine’s mineral and rare earth resources, aimed at bolstering the nation’s long-term economic security.

European partners also play a role in the peace process, with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte scheduled to visit the White House later this week.

Russia’s Position and the Road Ahead

Russia has yet to formally respond to the ceasefire proposal. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has previously criticized Zelenskyy for refusing to negotiate unless the US provides nuclear deterrence assurances. The Kremlin insists that any ceasefire must secure Russia’s long-term security interests, and demands that Ukraine withdraw from four regions claimed by Russia.

Adding to the complexity, late on Monday, Russia launched air strikes on Kyiv. Moscow claimed it downed 343 drones fired by Ukraine, including 91 aimed at the Moscow region, underscoring that the battlefield remains highly volatile despite diplomatic overtures.

Implications for the Russia-Ukraine War

The proposed ceasefire could mark a significant diplomatic turning point by reopening channels for US military aid and potentially stabilizing Ukraine in the short term. However, many analysts caution that a temporary truce might simply allow both sides to regroup, rather than establishing a foundation for lasting peace. With fresh offensives and continuing casualties on the battlefield, Ukraine’s security guarantees post-ceasefire remain a major concern.

As US and Ukrainian officials gear up for further discussions—with Trump’s National Security Advisor expected to meet his Russian counterpart and a US special envoy slated for Moscow—the outcome of this proposal could have far-reaching implications for the future of the conflict.

</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump has put a hold on his plan to double tariffs on Canadian steel and metal imports, a decision that comes only hours after he threatened to raise these duties to 50 percent. However, the previously announced 25 percent tariffs will still be implemented starting March 12.

Tariff Shake-Up Following Ontario’s Move

Trump’s decision to pause the doubling of tariffs followed a strategic move by Ontario, which suspended the new 25 percent charge on electricity exports to certain northern US states. This suspension came in response to Trump’s tariff threat, and according to White House Senior Counselor Peter Navarro in a CNBC interview, “cooler heads prevailed.” The development allowed the US administration to ease off on further escalating the steel and metal import duties from Canada.

The Ongoing US-Canada Trade War

The recent tariff adjustments are the latest flashpoint in a broader North American trade dispute. On February 1, 2025, Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, citing issues such as trade imbalance, illegal immigration, and drug trafficking. Initially scheduled for February 4, the tariffs were postponed to March 4 and later further delayed, with the additional levies now set to take effect on March 12.

In response, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the US measures as unjustified. Canada retaliated by imposing a 25 percent tariff on US goods valued at $30 billion, with plans to expand these measures to affect $125 billion worth of American products.

Impact on Bilateral Relations and Consumer Behavior

The trade skirmish has reverberated through both economies, sparking significant changes in consumer behaviors. Many Canadians have begun boycotting US products and canceling trips to the United States. Meanwhile, retaliatory moves by Canada’s Ontario province have compounded tensions, including banning US companies from government contracts and canceling a contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink, as well as threatening to cut electricity supplies to millions of US consumers.

</excerpt>

A new controversy has erupted at the G7 as the United States vetoed a Canadian proposal to form a task force aimed at monitoring Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” of aging oil tankers. These tankers, whose identities remain concealed to evade Western sanctions, have been causing significant disruptions in the Baltic Sea and beyond.

US Pushes to Weaken Anti-Russia Wording

During negotiations for a joint G7 communiqué, the US delegation lobbied to strengthen language about China while diluting references to Russia. According to Bloomberg, American officials successfully removed key terms such as “sanctions” and altered phrases describing Russia’s capacity to maintain its war in Ukraine, opting instead for language that emphasized “earning revenue.” The US justified its stance by citing a reevaluation of its participation in multilateral initiatives.

Canadian Proposal Under Fire

Canada, currently holding the G7 presidency, had advanced the proposal ahead of the foreign ministers’ meeting in Quebec. The measure aimed to counter potential sanctions breaches by Russia’s shadow fleet. However, the US veto has fueled questions about Washington’s seemingly lenient approach towards Russia, prompting debates over whether the decision is strategically motivated.

European Countermeasures and Uncertain US Stance

Meanwhile, European nations are exploring alternative strategies, including proposals to seize Moscow’s oil-exporting tankers in the Baltic Sea under environmental or piracy laws. It remains unclear if the United States will support these new measures or if it will continue to maintain its current course. As the G7 communiqué awaits final consensus, the evolving dispute highlights growing geopolitical tensions and the complex interplay of trade, sanctions, and global security.

</excerpt>

A viral video from Joint Base Andrews has ignited controversy after it showed billionaire Elon Musk, accompanied by his mother Maye Musk and his four-year-old son X Æ A-12, disembarking Air Force One alongside President Donald Trump. Critics have slammed the incident as a blatant misuse of taxpayer-funded government transport by a man who already owns a fleet of private jets.

An Unusual Guest on Air Force One

The footage captured Musk and his family exiting the iconic presidential aircraft, a symbol of national power and security, as they were greeted by cameras and onlookers. Although it is not uncommon for US presidents to invite guests on Air Force One, many questioned why Musk, a tech mogul with extensive private aviation resources, was using government assets.

Public Backlash and Political Debate

Social media erupted with criticism. Political advocacy groups, including The Lincoln Project, accused Musk of squandering public funds. One commentator on X (formerly Twitter) labeled the move “outrageous and possibly illegal,” arguing that Musk should cover his own travel expenses. The incident has fueled speculations about Musk’s increasing influence in the White House, especially given his role as a senior adviser and his association with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has recently come under fire for massive federal job cuts and contract cancellations.

Known for its opulence and advanced security features—including a dedicated presidential suite, two fully equipped kitchens, and countermeasures against missile attacks—Air Force One is designed to serve as a mobile command center in times of crisis. Its use has traditionally been limited to official government business, making Musk’s presence a subject of heated debate.

Growing Concerns Over Government Resource Use

The appearance of Musk on Air Force One has drawn fierce scrutiny, with many arguing that his presence undermines the integrity of government resources. “Your tax dollars are paying for the richest man in the world to fly around when he has his own jets,” one outspoken critic commented online. While some supporters claim Musk’s expertise benefits national interests, critics contend that his frequent interactions with government entities signal an overreach of influence that may not be in the public’s best interest.

</excerpt>

The United States, under President Donald Trump, appears to be retreating from its global commitments, inadvertently creating a power vacuum that China is eager to fill. As Trump prioritizes an “America First” approach, critics argue that his policies are effectively paving the way for a “China First” reality, particularly in multilateral institutions and in the developing world.

Shifting Global Dynamics

Traditionally a major supporter of international organisations like the World Health Organization and a key provider of humanitarian aid through USAID, the US is now pulling back. This withdrawal has left many developing countries in need of assistance. With American funding and support receding, China is stepping in to forge new partnerships and expand its influence, especially in Africa and Asia.

Flawed Strategies and Isolation

Trump’s strategy to counter China—involving a shift of focus from Europe to the Indo-Pacific—has been widely criticized as short-sighted. Geopolitical analyst Swasti Rao notes that withdrawing from one theater to focus on another ignores the interconnected nature of global challenges. Moreover, Trump’s transactional, money-focused approach fails to address the deeply ideological ambitions of leaders like Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, who are determined to restore their nations’ perceived lost greatness.

Expansionist Rhetoric and Global Implications

Trump’s expansionist rhetoric has further complicated international relations. Not only has he supported Russia’s actions in Ukraine, but he has also openly discussed plans to annex territories including the Panama Canal, parts of Canada, Denmark’s Greenland, and even Gaza. Such proposals have weakened longstanding American checks on China’s territorial ambitions. Now, China is using this shift in US posture as a green light to advance its own expansionist objectives regarding Taiwan, the South China Sea, and even disputed Himalayan borders with India and Bhutan.

The Growing Influence of China

With the US stepping back, China is rapidly expanding its reach, offering an alternative model of economic and diplomatic engagement in the developing world. This shift is reshaping global power dynamics, with many nations increasingly looking to Beijing for support and investment. As the US continues to face internal challenges and a dwindling commitment to its traditional allies, the gap in global leadership is becoming ever more pronounced.

The unfolding scenario has ignited debate among international observers. Critics warn that the combination of Trump’s isolationism and expansionist rhetoric could have lasting impacts on global stability, ultimately tipping the balance of power in favor of China.

A boating tragedy unfolded near New York on Sunday as a vessel overturned in the Ambrose Channel, leading to multiple casualties. Emergency response teams, including the New York Fire Department (NYFD), New York Police Department (NYPD), and the U.S. Coast Guard, rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call around noon.

Six individuals were thrown into the water as the boat capsized near Breezy Point, a well-known area at the tip of Queens’ Rockaway Peninsula. Rescue teams managed to pull five people from the water and transport them to nearby hospitals. Tragically, three of them succumbed to their injuries.

Authorities confirmed that one of the injured remains in critical condition, while another is stable. Two victims were airlifted to Staten Island University Hospital, while the remaining three were taken to Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook, where medical teams awaited them.

The administration reshuffles top officials to strengthen immigration enforcement, aiming for stricter policies and increased arrests of undocumented migrants across the U.S.
</excerpt>

The Trump administration has removed and replaced its acting head of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after the agency reportedly failed to meet expected arrest and deportation figures. According to Reuters, a senior official confirmed that Caleb Vitello, who was serving as the acting chief of ICE, has been relieved of his administrative role.

Vitello to Oversee Field Operations

Although Vitello is stepping down as ICE chief, he is not leaving the agency entirely. Instead, he will now lead the office responsible for overseeing the arrests and deportation of undocumented migrants. A spokeswoman from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told The Wall Street Journal that his new role will focus more on field and enforcement operations.

Trump Administration’s Push for Stricter Immigration Enforcement

The removal of Vitello comes amid increasing pressure from the Trump administration to escalate immigration enforcement. Reports suggest that the White House will soon announce a new acting director for ICE, aiming to revamp the agency’s leadership and boost deportation efforts.

Leadership Reshuffle Amid Growing Frustration

Trump initially appointed Vitello as ICE chief last December, commending his 23 years of experience in federal service. However, despite the administration’s high expectations, deportation numbers have not met anticipated targets. In response, the White House has been reshuffling ICE leadership, with top officials Russell Hott and Peter Berg being reassigned to local offices in Washington and St. Paul, Minnesota, respectively.

ICE Faces Pressure to Deliver Results

Since taking office on January 20, the administration has averaged 826 arrests daily. However, these figures remain below the expected levels, leading to frustration within the administration. A DHS spokesperson emphasized the need for accountability within ICE, stating that both the president and the American public demand stronger immigration enforcement.

The latest moves indicate a clear push by the Trump administration to reshape ICE and prioritise stricter immigration policies in the coming months.

Trump’s administration criticized South Africa’s policies, sparking global debate on America’s stance in international diplomacy.
</excerpt>

As diplomatic tensions between the United States and South Africa intensify, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio opted out of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting currently being held in Johannesburg. While top diplomats from Russia, China, and India actively participated in discussions, Rubio’s absence has fueled controversy over US-South Africa relations.

Rubio confirmed his decision before the event, citing his unwillingness to support what he termed “anti-Americanism.” In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, he accused South Africa of using the G20 platform to promote “solidarity, equality, & sustainability,” which he dismissed as a cover for diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and climate change policies. “My job is to advance America’s national interests, not waste taxpayer money or coddle anti-Americanism,” Rubio asserted.

Further US Withdrawal from G20 Meetings

Shortly after Rubio’s announcement, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also declared his absence from the upcoming G20 Finance Ministers’ Meeting scheduled for next week. However, unlike Rubio, Bessent cited obligations in Washington as the reason for his absence. A senior Treasury official is expected to represent the United States in his place.

Strained US-South Africa Relations

This diplomatic snub comes at a particularly volatile time. South Africa, the first African nation to preside over the G20, has positioned itself as a champion for developing countries. However, relations between Washington and Pretoria have worsened since President Donald Trump assumed office. His administration has raised concerns about South Africa’s governance and its role in global affairs.

Adding to the friction, Trump signed an executive order earlier this year to cut US aid to South Africa, citing “unjust and immoral practices” against the Afrikaner minority. The situation was further exacerbated when South Africa filed a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in December 2023, a move that angered the US administration.

South Africa’s Response to US Snub

In response to Rubio’s remarks, South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola downplayed the situation, stating that the US’s decision was “not a complete boycott” of South Africa’s G20 leadership. He reassured that the US would still have some form of representation at the meetings in Johannesburg.

Meanwhile, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the G20 gathering, emphasizing the importance of multilateralism and international cooperation. In his opening speech, Ramaphosa warned that the world’s fragile geopolitical climate was under threat from rising intolerance, conflicts, and climate change. “There is a lack of consensus among major powers, including within the G20, on how to respond to these global challenges,” he stated. He further urged that “the principles of the UN Charter, multilateralism, and international law should remain central to all global efforts.”

The Road Ahead

As South Africa continues its G20 presidency until November 2025, it faces an uphill battle in balancing global expectations while navigating tensions with Washington. The US absence from key meetings raises concerns over potential policy divisions and the future of US engagement in international diplomacy under the Trump administration.
