Authorities will now rely on a newly formed expert panel to assess sustainable land use while preserving the UNESCO World Heritage site.
</excerpt>

Peru has triggered a Nazca Lines protection reversal following intense public backlash over its decision to shrink the protected area surrounding the ancient geoglyphs. The original reduction had sparked concerns from environmentalists and archaeologists who warned it would expose the sacred site to informal mining threats.

Public Criticism Triggers Nazca Lines Protection Reversal

On Sunday, Peru’s culture ministry restored the full 5,600 sq km (2,200 sq mile) protection zone, which it had slashed to 3,200 sq km in May. Officials had initially justified the cuts by citing more accurate data that identified zones with “real patrimonial value.” However, widespread criticism sparked a swift Nazca Lines protection reversal. The ministry also committed to forming a new technical panel to evaluate long-term land use. This group will include academic specialists, government representatives, archaeologists, and UNESCO officials.

More than 800 vast animal, plant, and shape drawings span the Nazca Lines, which people carved into the desert over 1,500 years ago. These geoglyphs stand among Peru’s most iconic cultural treasures and UNESCO recognised them as a World Heritage Site in 1994. Critics warned that reducing their protective buffer would invite illegal gold mining and environmental degradation, especially as global gold prices surged to new highs.

Mining Threats Spark Urgent Action to Protect Nazca Lines

The Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines estimates that 362 small-scale miners operate within the Nazca district under a regularisation program. However, many fear a rise in illegal activities. Former culture minister Luis Jaime Castillo warned that illegal mining and mineral processing plants already infest the area.

The Nazca Lines protection reversal seeks to stop further damage. Although the government previously faced pressure to support small-scale mining, experts argue that preserving cultural heritage must take priority.

A new round of assessments will soon determine whether any land changes can occur without risking the site. Until then, the restored boundaries remain in effect, offering renewed confidence in the protection of Peru’s archaeological legacy.

It is a communal meal after fasting. Dates, as per Prophet Muhammad’s sunnah, are often consumed to break the fast.
</excerpt>

Ramadan is a sacred month for every Muslim in the world, commemorated through fasting during sunrise to sunset, symbolizing commitment and surrender to Allah. The month brings people together, especially at sehri (the dawn meal) and iftar (the meal of breaking the fast), to enjoy these sacred moments of spirituality and companionship.

UNESCO Declares Iftar as an Intangible Cultural Heritage

In 2023, UNESCO declared iftar as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, appreciating its cultural significance. UNESCO received the joint application from Azerbaijan, Iran, Uzbekistan, and others, emphasizing the common cultural significance of this practice for all cultures. Breaking the fast with dates and tea is a traditional practice that makes iftar a highly social and cultural celebration.

Origin Story of Iftar

The custom of breaking the fast with dates has religious origins. The Prophet Muhammad used to break his fast with fresh dates, or in their absence, dry dates, or even a few gulps of water. This custom is a sunnah, or a Prophet’s tradition, and continues to be observed even today, as dates are rich in vital vitamins, minerals, and potassium that do good to the body and immune system.

Iftar, which refers to breaking or splitting away from the Arabic source, is in the evening at the end of 12-15 hours of fasting. It is a religious and spiritual dinner in Islam, asked for by the Prophet to break the fasting as soon as possible, hence a time of gratitude and closeness to Allah. The shared eating brings people together, as Muslims tend to eat with family, friends, and the community at mosques.

The practice of fasting for a day teaches self-discipline and patience, whereas Iftar is an encouragement and group activity reaffirming the stronger spiritual experience of Ramadan.

</excerpt>

KBS drama series The First Night With the Duke has ignited outcry as claims circulate about property damage on its shoot location; Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy, a World Heritage Site belonging to UNESCO, in Byeongsa-ri village, Pungcheon-myeon township in Andong of North Gyeongsang Province. It currently sits at the focal point of inquiries led by the city administration of Andong and the National Heritage Administration into improper activities executed by the television drama’s staff after several grievances.

Reports claim that the crew nailed the props into the wooden pillars of the academy, which is strictly prohibited under their filming permit. A National Heritage Administration official admitted to receiving complaints through the National Safety Report System on January 2. “Filming permits issued by local governments explicitly prohibit damaging cultural properties,” they said. The production team has clearly breached these conditions. The Andong City government is examining the case and may file legal cases.

The scandal broke out when an architect, who prefers to be known as “A,” posted her experience on social media. On December 30, 2024, they witnessed staff driving nails into the wooden pillars and raised objections, which were met with hostility. “Even in traditional Korean homes, nailing requires care. When dealing with heritage sites, such actions must be avoided altogether,” the architect stated, expressing concern over recurring neglect in safeguarding cultural heritage during filming. They also alerted Andong City’s cultural heritage department and media outlets, calling for stricter protections.

KBS issued a public apology for the event, saying, “We deeply regret the concerns caused by this incident.” Although the network acknowledged that the crew had broken the conditions, they did affirm that they had been granted permission to film earlier. In order to examine and repair the site while guaranteeing future preventative measures, KBS committed to collaborating closely with Byeongsanseowon officials.

The event has rekindled public calls for more stringent control to safeguard cultural heritage sites during commercial endeavours like movie projects, even as investigations continue.

Skilled artisans like Sakhi continue to craft this cherished instrument, preserving heritage.
</excerpt>

In the heart of Herat, Afghanistan, amidst the clattering of tools and the scent of freshly cut wood, one man remains steadfast in preserving a piece of his country’s soul. Sakhi, a craftsman in his fifties, continues to craft rubabs — the traditional Afghan musical instrument — despite the increasing suppression of music under Taliban rule. His small, cluttered workshop tells a story of resilience and commitment to cultural heritage.

Sakhi’s Defiant Craftsmanship

Sakhi’s hands work tirelessly, shaping the rubab, an instrument that holds deep cultural significance in Afghanistan. For decades, he has been creating two rubabs each month, an endeavour that has shaped his life. Though music is increasingly banned in the country, with the Taliban’s crackdown tightening its grip, Sakhi refuses to abandon his craft.

“I know only this work, and I need to make money somehow,” he shares, his voice tinged with determination. But his mission is far more profound than just earning a livelihood. For Sakhi, the rubab is not just an instrument, but a symbol of his heritage and identity. “The value of this work for me is the heritage it holds. The heritage must not be lost,” he adds.

UNESCO Recognition: Preserving a Cultural Legacy

In recognition of the importance of preserving the rubab and its cultural relevance, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially recognised the art of crafting and playing the rubab as an intangible cultural heritage in Afghanistan, Iran, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan in December. This acknowledgment underscores the significance of this ancient musical tradition that has shaped the region’s cultural landscape for centuries.

Despite the Taliban’s efforts to erase elements of Afghan culture, including music, the recognition by UNESCO provides a beacon of hope. Sakhi’s quiet yet powerful resistance symbolises a larger movement to protect cultural legacies amid political unrest.

A Struggle to Keep Culture Alive

Sakhi’s determination to continue crafting rubabs highlights a larger struggle in Afghanistan, where artistic expression and cultural practices are under siege. His work, however, stands as a testament to the resilience of Afghan culture, even in the face of adversity.

While the future of music in Afghanistan remains uncertain, the craftsmen like Sakhi who continue to make rubabs are the unsung heroes of this cultural preservation. Through their hands, the rich history of Afghan music and artistry continues to live on, quietly defying forces that seek to extinguish it.

The rubab, a symbol of Afghanistan’s musical soul, remains alive in the workshops of dedicated artisans like Sakhi, proving that heritage cannot be easily erased.

</excerpt>

The Silk Road was a network of trade routes that linked East and West for over 1,800 years. It facilitated the exchange of goods, ideas, and cultures between civilizations such as China, Rome, and India. Stretching across thousands of miles and numerous cultures, the Silk Road was more than a mere trade route—it served as a channel for ideas, religions, and innovations that transformed the world.

The Silk Road, established during the Han Dynasty around 130 BCE, was a trade route network connecting East Asia to Europe, facilitating the exchange of goods, culture, and knowledge. Initially dominated by the Silk trade, this route expanded to include other significant commodities such as paper and gunpowder, which catalyzed major changes in European society. Additionally, the Silk Road played a crucial role in spreading religions, including Islam and Nestorian Christianity, to various regions including India. The Silk Road also Spread Buddhism to the world.

Samarkand, Bukhara, and Takshashila were some of the primary hotspots along the Silk Road, serving as major hubs for traders and travelers. Renowned explorer Marco Polo, who traveled the Silk Road from 1271 to 1295, famously remarked, “What I saw in the East, I can’t tell even half of that because not a single person would believe what I saw.”

The Silk Road also connected the southern part of India via the Grand Trunk Road also known as GT Road, extending its reach to Beijing, Shanghai, and Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul). The fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans in 1453 was a pivotal event that led European nations to seek alternative routes to Asia, eventually sparking the Age of Exploration.

Key Indian sites connected to the Silk Road, such as Indraprastha, Shrawasti, Kaushambi, and Kushinagar, are now recognized as UNESCO World Heritage tentative sites. The route’s significance diminished due to geopolitical shifts and the rise of maritime trade routes.

German geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen in 1877, the Silk Road’s use spanned from the 2nd century BCE to the 18th century AD, facilitating economic, cultural, political, and religious exchanges across continents. The Maritime Silk Road, initiated in the 1st century, extended trade routes by sea from Vietnam through India, Sri Lanka, the Red Sea, and to the Roman Empire.

Launched in 2013, China’s BRI aims to recreate and expand upon the ancient Silk Road. The initiative consists of both overland economic corridors and maritime trade routes. David Sacks, an expert on U.S.-China relations at the Council on Foreign Relations, states, “China has had a fair amount of success in redrawing trade maps around the world, in ways that put China at the center and not the U.S. or Europe.”

The scale of the BRI is staggering. By 2023, 147 countries—accounting for two-thirds of the world’s population and 40 percent of global GDP—have signed on to projects or indicated interest. The initiative includes the construction of railroads, highways, ports, and other infrastructure projects designed to facilitate trade and economic growth.

However, the BRI is not without controversy. Critics contend that it signifies a troubling expansion of Chinese power and influence. Some see it as a potential debt trap for participating countries, pointing to instances where nations have struggled to repay Chinese loans for infrastructure projects.

A 2021 study analyzed over one hundred debt financing contracts China signed with foreign governments, revealing clauses that often restrict restructuring with traditional creditor groups like the Paris Club. These contracts frequently allow China to demand repayment at any time, potentially giving Beijing leverage over participating countries on issues such as Taiwan or human rights.

The coming years will be crucial in determining whether the New Silk Road will fulfill its promise of shared prosperity or become a source of international tension. As countries navigate the opportunities and challenges presented by the BRI, the world watches to see how this modern incarnation of an ancient trade route will shape the future of global commerce and diplomacy.

The Silk Road stands as a symbol of human ingenuity, resilience, and the timeless quest for connection. Its story is a reminder that in the tapestry of history, threads of commerce and culture are inextricably woven together, shaping the world we live in today.

The road is named after Appius Claudius Caecus, the Roman censor who initiated and completed the first section as a military road to the south in 312 BC.

Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano celebrated the move, stating it acknowledged the “universal value of an extraordinary work of engineering that has been essential for centuries for commercial, social, and cultural exchanges with the Mediterranean and the East.”

India and Laos continue to deepen their bilateral ties through cultural engagements, with the restoration of the Vat Phou UNESCO World Heritage site standing as a testament to their shared heritage and long-standing relations. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has been instrumental in this significant conservation project, furthering the cultural bond between the two nations.

India and Laos have enjoyed “longstanding, friendly, and mutually supportive relations,” and the collaborative efforts in restoring the Vat Phou Temple complex underscore this partnership. Located in Pakse, Laos, the temple is a well-preserved landscape over 1,000 years old, embodying the Hindu vision of the relationship between nature and humanity. UNESCO describes Vat Phou as a site of major historical importance, encompassing two planned cities along the Mekong River and the Phou Kao Mountain, representing the development from the 5th to 15th centuries, mainly associated with the Khmer Empire.

The ASI began its involvement in 2005, inspecting the site before signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Lao PDR government in 2007. Physical conservation work commenced in 2009. Ashok Kumar, the lead ASI conservationist at Vat Phou, noted that the first phase of conservation, from 2007 to 2017, has been completed, with the second phase underway from 2018 to 2028.

Kumar highlighted the cultural significance of Vat Phou, emphasizing its rich Hindu heritage. “It is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, featuring scriptures and rock-cut images of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh,” he explained. The site also contains ancient images of Hanuman and other deities, reflecting the profound influence of Hindu mythology on the region.

The temple’s transformation from a Hindu to a Buddhist site in the 14th century illustrates the cultural and religious evolution in Laos. Amphol Sengphachanh, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Culture and Head of the Vat Phou World Heritage Site Division, praised the cultural ties between India and Laos, noting the temple’s historical significance and its transition to Buddhism.

Yogesh Raja, a Senior Conservationist with ASI, detailed the challenges faced during the restoration work, particularly during the rainy season. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the structure, stating, “As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the quality of work is paramount to preserve the integrity of the structure.”

India’s involvement in the restoration of Vat Phou is a significant cultural and diplomatic effort, showcasing its commitment to preserving shared heritage and enhancing bilateral relations. The project symbolizes the age-old civilizational ties between the two countries, best exemplified by the relic of the Buddha encased in the That Luang Stupa and the Vat Phou Temple Complex.

Laos, surrounded by China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar, shares its cultural similarities with India. As India’s presence in Laos grows, the relations between the two nations in various spheres are expected to strengthen further.

India’s role in restoring Vat Phou highlights the importance of cultural diplomacy in fostering international relationships. This project not only preserves an ancient heritage site but also reinforces the deep-rooted connections between India and Laos, promising a future of continued collaboration and shared cultural appreciation.

The inclusion of these timeless classics not only underscores India’s rich literary heritage and cultural legacy but also signifies a pivotal step forward in recognizing and safeguarding diverse narratives and artistic expressions that shape our collective humanity.

Authored by revered figures such as Acharya Anandvardhan, Pt. Vishnu Sharma, and Goswami Tulsidas, respectively. Ramcharitmanas, Panchatantra, and Sahrdayaloka-Locana have profoundly influenced Indian literature and culture, leaving an indelible mark on readers and artists both within and beyond India. The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) played a crucial role in securing this historic moment during the 10th meeting of the Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific (MOWCAP). Professor Ramesh Chandra Gaur, Dean (Administration) and Head of the Department, Kala Nidhi Division at IGNCA, effectively presented these nominations, emphasizing India’s commitment to global cultural preservation.

Inscription on the Register not only validates the significance of these literary treasures but also facilitates greater access to them, enabling research, education, and preservation for generations to come. This achievement reaffirms IGNCA’s dedication to promoting India’s cultural heritage on the global stage and underscores its commitment to preserving the country’s rich literary legacy.

India rejoices as the esteemed literary works Ramcharitmanas, Panchatantra, and Sahrdayaloka-Locana find their place in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Regional Register, marking a significant milestone in global cultural preservation efforts.

</excerpt>

The number of internationally mobile students globally has significantly increased over the last two decades, as highlighted by data collected by UNESCO.33 In 2001, this number was at just over 2.2 million. A decade later, the number of internationally mobile students had grown to more than 3.8 million. This number continued to increase in the following years, rising to over 6 million in 2021, nearly triple the figure 20 years prior. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and related mobility restrictions, the number of internationally mobile students remained strong. Between 2020 and 2021 – at the height of the pandemic – the number of internationally mobile students increased slightly (from 6.38 million to 6.39 million), defying expectations.

Historically, the population of internationally mobile students has been gendered, with male students consistently outnumbering female students. In 2001, there were around 1 million internationally mobile female students (45% of the total) and 1.2 million male students (54%). While this gap has narrowed over the last 20 years, the number of internationally mobile female students remains lower than that of male students. In 2021, around 3 million internationally mobile students were female (47%) and males comprised around 3.4 million (52%).

Countries in Asia are the origins of the largest number of internationally mobile students in the world. In 2021, more than 1 million internationally mobile students were from China, by far the highest number globally and more than double the number of students from India, which ranks second (around 508,000). Other significant origin countries include Viet Nam, Germany and Uzbekistan (around 100,000 each), although their numbers are far fewer than the top two origin countries. The United States is the largest destination country for internationally mobile students in the world (more than 833,000). The United States is followed by the United Kingdom (nearly 601,000), Australia (around 378,000), Germany (over 376,000) and Canada (nearly 318,000).

The world’s two most populous nations, China and India, have the highest numbers of students studying overseas. According to data published by UNESCO, more than one million Chinese students were studying abroad in 2021.

India’s total was close to half of this, with around 508,000 students living in other countries. Following some way behind come Vietnam, Germany and Uzbekistan.
The United States was the largest destination country for students studying abroad with over 833,000 there in 2021. It was followed by the United Kingdom (nearly 601,000), Australia (around 378,000), Germany (over 376,000) and Canada (nearly 318,000).

This data was published as part of the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) 2024 World Migration Report, which provides an overview of the global state of migration using the latest available data, published Tuesday. This ranges from data on asylum seekers fleeing war to economic migrants seeking labor opportunities, and as this chart shows, to students living abroad.

According to the report, the total number of internationally mobile students has been on the rise over the last two decades. UNESCO data reveals that where 2.2 million students were studying abroad in 2001, that figure had climbed to 6.39 million students in 2021.

</excerpt>

World Press Freedom Day is celebrated every year on May 3. The theme for this year is “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis.”

The day is celebrated to serve as a reminder of the importance of press freedom around the world and to acknowledge the problems that journalists face. The day also honors all journalists who have lost their lives.

World Press Freedom Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993. This proclamation followed a recommendation made in 1991 during UNESCO’s twenty-sixth General Conference session. This year will celebrate the 31st year of World Press Freedom Day.

An African journalist initiated the World Press Freedom Day celebrations during a 1991 UNESCO session in Namibia. The United Nations General Assembly chose to celebrate it in December 1993, after the UNESCO General Conference’s recommendation. The primary goal of this day is to remind the government and the world of the importance of the press in a democracy. It also emphasizes the need of allowing the press to express itself freely.

One of the most important aspects of World Press Freedom Day is that it puts pressure on countries who attempt to restrict and undermine press freedom. It is a day to resist authoritarianism. The day also demonstrates how much we respect the public service performed by honest journalists who are dedicated to finding the truth. The day also commemorates and respects journalists who gave their lives to keep the public informed.

The day honors journalists’ efforts, promotes press freedom, emphasizes government duty for a supportive media environment, and safeguards media independence, all while encouraging public access to information and freedom of expression.

Situated within the expansive grounds of the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve, the Church of the Ascension stands as an architectural marvel, recognized as one of Russia’s earliest hipped roof temples. Legend has it that this masterpiece was erected to commemorate the birth of Tsar Ivan IV, famously known as Ivan the Terrible. While the church is currently undergoing restoration and inaccessible for interior exploration, visitors can still appreciate its beauty from the exterior, amidst the picturesque setting of the park that graces Moscow’s southern landscape.

Although access to the Church of the Ascension is limited, Kolomenskoye offers a plethora of other attractions to explore. Visitors can embark on guided tours to discover Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich’s palace, the Falcon Court, and the beekeeper’s estate. Moreover, the museum-reserve and Izmailovo Estate host engaging events that bring Russian history and culture to life through interactive experiences, catering to families and history enthusiasts alike.

Inside the monastery, visitors can explore valuable collections of paintings and artisanal crafts, immersing themselves in the intricate interior decor by joining a guided tour.

In addition to guided tours, Novodevichy Convent offers a playground for younger visitors. Electronic cards for accessing the playground can be obtained at the church shop during operating hours. These cards are available exclusively to parents with children (limited to one card per family) and children aged 14 and above. Parents have the option to accompany their children to the playground, providing them with a safe and enjoyable space for recreational activities, monitored by video surveillance for security purposes.

“Garba of Gujarat was inscribed in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Humanity by UNESCO, under the provisions of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage during the 18th meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage from December 5-9, 2023, in Kasane, Botswana,” as per the Ministry of Culture.

Garba is a ceremonial and spiritual dance performed during the Navaratri festival. Participants encircle a perforated earthenware pot illuminated with an oil lamp or an effigy of the mother goddess Amba.

Dancers partake in a counter-clockwise circle around the center, executing basic steps while singing and synchronously clapping their hands.

The Gujarati dance begins with slow circular motions, gradually escalating to a frenzied whirl as the tempo intensifies.

</excerpt>

Vishal Sharma, the Indian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UNESCO, visited the historic site of Charaideo Moidams in Assam, which has been nominated by India for UNESCO’s World Heritage List. After his visit, Sharma expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for their efforts in promoting Assamese culture.

Charaideo Moidams, a collection of mounds representing the late medieval burial tradition of the Tai Ahom community in Assam, is renowned for its architectural and artistic significance. Often likened to the pyramids of Egypt, these mounds reflect the expertise of Assamese craftsmen and masons from the medieval era.

The Indian envoy expressed optimism about the site’s nomination, stating, “I would like to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for promoting Assamese culture and world heritage to international countries and places all over the world. The government of India has nominated this site on the world heritage list and I hope it gets inscribed on the list.”

Sharma praised the efforts of the Assam government, the Ministry of Culture, the Archaeological Survey of India, and the Assam Archaeology Department for preserving and conserving the site. He also highlighted Prime Minister Modi’s vision of ‘Vikash Bhi Virasat Bhi,’ which connects the past with the future.

Last year, Chief Minister Sarma wrote to Prime Minister Modi, informing him that the Assam government had submitted the World Heritage Nomination Dossier of Moidams for evaluation by UNESCO in 2023. Sarma emphasized the cultural and historical significance of Moidams, especially the 90 royal burials at Charaideo, which are among the best-preserved examples of the Tai Ahom burial tradition.

Sarma’s letter underscored the importance of Moidams as a representation of Assam’s rich cultural heritage. He requested the Government of India to support the nomination dossier and forward it to the World Heritage Centre of UNESCO, noting that there is currently no World Heritage Site in the category of cultural heritage in North East India.

</excerpt>

According to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, history will remember that the India-Middle East-European corridor was conceived in India and that it will serve as a foundation for global trade for the ensuing decades.

Modi mentioned the “Silk route,” an old trade route utilized by India when it was a thriving and significant commercial power, in his monthly Mann ki Baat address. He also claimed that India recently proposed the India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor at the G20 Summit. He said that the two achievements have appeared most frequently in the communications he has gotten from people. He claimed that the summit’s success, followed by India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission’s success, quadrupled every citizen’s satisfaction.

He claimed that when India was successful in getting the African Union admitted to the G20, the world recognized its leadership. The prime minister claimed that Bharat Mandapam, the site of the G20 Summit, had become a “celebrity” and that visitors had been taking photos in front of the cutting-edge conference hall.

Noting that September 27 is World Tourism Day, he stated that goodwill plays a significant role in luring travelers and that tourism is supposed to provide the most jobs with the least amount of investment. The goodwill toward India has increased over the past few years, he claimed, and it has only increased since the G20 summits, when more than a million international delegates visited various regions of the nation to see its richness and history.

The recent designation of the Hoysala temples of Karnataka and Santiniketan, the city associated with Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, according to Modi, is a source of great pleasure.

There are now 42 of these sites in India, and the nation is working to have more locations connected to its culture and legacy recognized as World legacy Sites. No one will ever forget seeing world leaders paying respects at Mahatma Gandhi’s tomb during the G20 Summit, he added, noting that it demonstrated how his principles are still relevant on a worldwide scale as his birth anniversary is on October 2.

The global urban population facing water scarcity is expected to more than double by 2050, from 930 million in 2016 to 1.7-2.4 billion people. The increasing frequency of extreme and prolonged droughts is also stressing ecosystems, with dire consequences for both plant and animal species, according to a report published by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The Union Ministry of Culture urged everyone on Thursday to celebrate Durga Puja’s inclusion as the first Indian festival on UNESCO’s Representation List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Meenakshi Lekhi, Union Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs praised the Centre’s efforts to promote India’s culture and heritage.

“Nominating the Durga Puja in Intangible Cultural Heritage list is the country’s pride. We have taken all the advice into consideration. As per the direction, we nominated Durga Puja as the Intangible culture of the country because cutting across states is celebrated by everyone. In this process, it brings everyone together, it’s Unity in Diversity,” Lekhi said.

According to the union minister, India has submitted ‘Garba’ for consideration on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

She went on to explain how the “whole-of-government approach” resulted in Durga Puja being successfully inscribed on the UNESCO list.

According to Lekhi, the union culture ministry was involved in preparing the dossiers for inscription, while the union external affairs ministry gathered international support for voting.

She added that everyone should rise above petty politics.

However, Lekhi attacked West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee for taking credit for the inclusion of the festival on UNESCO’s list.

“It is horrendous a state government that banned Durga Puja and idol immersion was taking credit for this feat,” she said.

Lekhi also praised the artisans who worked on the creation of Durga idols and pandals.

She will honour 30 such artisans on September 24 at a ministry-organized event in Kolkata.
