</excerpt>

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday said he had a meaningful phone call with US President Donald Trump. He appreciated the United States’ willingness to help Ukraine during its ongoing conflict with Russia.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Zelenskyy shared details of their discussion. He wrote, “As per drones, we’ve also reached an agreement with one of the leading American companies to significantly increase our joint efforts. We had an extremely fruitful conversation with the President of the United States yesterday, during which we discussed air defense. I’m grateful for the readiness to assist. Patriot systems are the key to defending against ballistic threats.”

Ukrainian Strike Hits Russian Airbase

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military claimed it launched a successful strike on Russia’s Borisoglebsk airbase, located in the Voronezh region. They said the attack damaged a depot storing glide bombs and several training aircraft. Russian officials have not yet commented, according to a report by Al Jazeera.

Drone Warfare Escalates on Both Sides

In response, Russia reported multiple Ukrainian drone attacks. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defences intercepted four drones targeting the capital. The incident caused a temporary halt in departures from one of Moscow’s major airports.

At the same time, Russia’s Ministry of Defence reported intercepting 48 Ukrainian drones over a five-hour period on Saturday evening. Earlier that day, they claimed to have shot down 45 more. The ministry also stated that 94 drones were destroyed overnight across Russian territory.

Ukraine Defends Against Heavy Drone Barrage

Ukraine’s Air Force also faced a large-scale drone attack. They said Russia launched 322 drones and decoys into Ukrainian territory late Friday into Saturday. Out of these, 157 were shot down, while 135 were likely jammed electronically.

Trump Frustrated with Putin, Supports Missile Aid

On Friday, President Trump also spoke with President Zelenskyy. After the call, he told reporters that Ukraine urgently needed Patriot missiles to protect itself. He also expressed dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s approach to the conflict.

Trump said, “It just seems like he wants to go all the way and just keep killing people… It’s not good. I wasn’t happy with it.” He added that he was “very unhappy” after his earlier conversation with Putin.

</excerpt>

Russia has launched its largest air strike on Ukraine’s capital since the conflict started in 2022, wounding at least 23 individuals and destroying important railway infrastructure. The overnight attack comprised 539 drones and 11 missiles that hit several Ukrainian regions, with the main target being Kyiv. The Ukrainian Air Force indicated that 478 of the air weapons were shot down and destroyed.

Blazes erupted in six Kyiv districts, wounding locals and prompting emergency evacuations. Debris from downed intercepted drones ignited a Holosiivskyi district medical facility. 14 remain hospitalized, Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed. Social media videos depicted the night-time evacuation of civilians, explosions, and crumbling buildings.

Kyiv Railways, Homes, and Hospitals Hit

Ukraine’s national railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, confirmed that the impact of drones destroyed railway infrastructure in Kyiv. The attack resulted in several diversions of trains and delays along the network. Cars and buildings in areas of the city were engulfed in fire, and authorities instructed residents to shut windows because of noxious smoke and combustion particles.

Tymur Tkachenko, the top of Kyiv’s Military Administration, attributed the attack to Russia in what he called “nothing but terror and murder.” He warned against the continued air quality danger and underscored that the city had never witnessed an attack of such scale since the beginning of the war.

Additional Strikes Throughout Ukraine

Outside Kyiv, Russia also hit eight other territories. Nine missiles and 63 drones targeted other Ukrainian targets. Russian shelling killed five civilians in Pokrovsk, a long-besieged city in eastern Ukraine.

Although both Moscow and Kyiv deny targeting civilians, thousands—predominantly Ukrainians—have been killed since Russia’s all-out invasion.

Trump, Putin, and Zelenskyy Weigh In

While Ukraine experiences mounting bombardments, President Donald Trump discussed matters with Vladimir Putin during a phone call. The two did not, however, according to Russian authorities, talk about the US suspension of weapons assistance. However, Trump before his visit to Iowa, accused former President Biden of shipping too many weapons to Kyiv.

“Were giving weapons,” Trump declared. “But Biden drained our entire country… We need to ensure that we have enough for ourselves.”

Morning in Kyiv. No sleep. Air quality is extremely bad. City is covered in thick smoke.

This is Russian terror, aimed at people who chose to stay, resist and fight. pic.twitter.com/a1pCBzHUOt

— Maria Avdeeva (@maria_avdv) July 4, 2025

Absolutely horrible and sleepless night in Kyiv. One of the worst so far.

Hundreds of Russian drones and ballistic missiles rained down on the Ukrainian capital.

Right after Putin spoke with President Trump. And he does it on purpose.

Enough of waiting! Putin clearly shows… pic.twitter.com/R0mlfUgJRx

— Andrii Sybiha 🇺🇦 (@andrii_sybiha) July 4, 2025

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in Denmark, stated that he hopes to talk to Trump in the near future about the pending arms deliveries.

Kyiv Under Fire, Diplomacy Frozen

As air raids continue and diplomacy stalls, Ukraine remains under severe threat. The scale of this latest attack marks a dangerous escalation and shows Russia’s capacity to strike deep into the heart of Ukrainian cities.

With uncertainty growing over US weapons aid and diplomatic talks, Kyiv braces for more.

</excerpt>

Russia has deployed approximately 50,000 troops along the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, only 12 miles from the regional capital, ratcheting up the war’s northern front.

Outnumbered about three-to-one, Ukrainian combatants now have a burgeoning problem as the front stretches more than 750 miles. Russia is seeking to establish a buffer zone from Kursk all the way to Sumy, with Kyiv preparing for a high-risk summer offensive.

Strategic Build-Up on the Northern Border

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed toward the end of May that Moscow has amassed elite forces—airborne, marines, and motor rifle brigades—along the Kursk–Sumy border to create a 10 km deep buffer zone.

He reported Russian advances in four border villages, whereas Ukraine regained around 4 km near Kostiantynivka. Russian state media estimates even greater forces—up to 60,000—while independent analysts give the number at 62,000–67,000.

Front Line Pushed by Inch, Not Blitz

Russian advances in Sumy are protracted and expensive. Since February 2025, forces have captured Basivka, Novenke, Loknia, Bilovody and sections of Kostiantynivka—about 100 km²—while Ukraine retains strategic points.

Russian troops move village by village across forests and marshes—not with tanks, but with soldiers. Ukrainian drone warfare holds them back even more.

Ukraine Holds — But at What Cost?

General Syrskyi declared Ukrainian defenses have halted Russian advances in Sumy and stabilized the line. He credited drone usage for slowing Moscow’s momentum, preventing the redeployment of some 50,000 element forces to other fronts. However, the front has stretched over 750 miles—up 100 miles in a year.

Civilian Toll and Evacuations

Intense bombardment has displaced more than 56,000 civilians from over 213 villages. Shelling and airstrikes killed civilians—a 9 year old girl among them—and destroyed homes. Accounts speak of villages laid to ruin, with families escaping under pre dawn evacuations.

Russia’s Summer Offensive in Motion

This northern push is a reflection of Russia’s larger strategy. Moscow unleashed its largest bombing campaign to date—537 missiles and drones—while maintaining ground pressure intact. Simultaneously, Russia pushes east into Donetsk’s Kostiantynivka and Kostyantynivka regions. Experts caution this summer will set the war’s course.

Ukraine needs more Western aid, most urgently high-tech air defence, drones, and artillery. President Zelenskiy is willing to continue negotiations—even trilateral summits—while excluding Belarus as a site. But on the battlefield, Ukraine has to cover thousands of miles of front with scarce forces.

What’s Next?

Russia’s deployment of 50,000 troops around Sumy represents a steep escalation. As Ukraine has so far maintained the line, defense pressure increases each day. With the expansion of front areas and civilian misery, the war reaches its critical phase. The next few weeks will challenge Ukraine’s policy, resilience, and the mettle of its Western allies.

Russia Launches Largest Aerial Assault on Ukraine, Fires 537 Missiles and Drones

<excerpt>Russia hits Ukraine with record drone and missile barrage, marking the war’s most massive aerial attack to date.
</excerpt>

Russia has conducted its biggest air strike against Ukraine since the conflict erupted in 2022. Ukrainian officials say the late-night attack was carried out using 537 airborne weapons in the form of 477 drones and decoys and 60 missiles. Ukraine’s air force called it the largest combined drone and missile attack so far. While 249 were destroyed and 226 electronically jammed, many of them managed to create extensive damage.

The escalation ran contrary to expectations of a breakthrough as Moscow was just recently willing to engage in direct peace negotiations. The attack also raised international concern, prompting Poland and allies to scramble fighters to safeguard NATO air space.

New Peak in Escalation

Ukrainian air force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat confirmed the extent of the strike, labelling it as the “most massive air strike” by sheer numbers. The assault by Russia struck various parts of Ukraine, including areas in the far west like Lviv and Drohobych, well away from the main front lines in the east and south.

In Lviv, drone attacks ignited a huge fire in an industrial plant in Drohobych and cut power to sections of the city. One death occurred in a drone attack in Kherson. Six individuals lost their lives from attacks in Cherkasy, among them a child. The attacks targeted civilian infrastructure, further complicating life in affected regions.

F-16 Downed Amid Defence

One of Ukraine’s newly acquired F-16 fighter jets was lost, Ukraine reported. The aircraft was damaged during the defensive operation when it was attacking Russian rockets.

The pilot was killed in the accident. The accident highlights the dangers that even Ukrainian forces are exposed to despite having high-end Western military equipment.

Peace Talk Signals Ring Hollow

Only two days ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted that Moscow was willing to consider a fresh round of direct peace negotiations in Istanbul. But the extent of the assault dispels that message. Two earlier rounds of negotiations in Istanbul yielded no results. As assaults escalate, diplomatic progress continues to fail.

Drone Warfare Defines the Conflict

Russia and Ukraine have both resorted to drones to expand their capabilities in terms of striking. The conflict has turned into a drone innovation battlefield and an electronic warfare battlefield. The number and complexity of drone attacks have turned Ukraine into a laboratory for new military technology.

Russia’s recent aerial campaign is a clear indication. Moscow speaks peace but fights with fury. Ukraine, though resilient, continues to bear the cost as civilians and troops alike endure the day-to-day cost of relentless fighting.

Trump and Zelensky to Meet Again at NATO Summit: What’s on the Table This Time?

<excerpt>US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet at the NATO summit to discuss sanctions on Russia, defence deals, and border threats.
</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday (June 25) on the sidelines of the NATO summit in The Hague. A Ukrainian presidency official confirmed the meeting to AFP, saying the two parties are coordinating details.

The negotiations are likely to centre on Russia sanctions, fresh arms contracts for Ukraine, and the recent Russian threat to take the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy. The encounter represents a fresh instance of tension and diplomacy between the two leaders, who have had a tense relationship in the past.

Meeting Set Amid Summit—and Strains

The political leaders are scheduled to gather in the early afternoon in the Netherlands. The prime topics on the agenda are the request by Ukraine for a new defence package. Much of the request is related to air defence systems. Ukraine also seeks stricter sanctions on Moscow, such as a more precise oil price cap.

Today, Ukraine and its foreign partners wish to reduce the price limit for Russian oil from $60 per barrel to $45. Trump, however, has refused to endorse any fresh sanctions. This is even when Russian President Vladimir Putin has been rejecting support for a ceasefire in the three-year war.

Putin’s Threats and Zelensky’s Warning

Voodymyr Zelensky has vocally accused Russia of resuming its aggression, however. On June 20, he threatened that Putin is “not in the mood” to stop fighting. He stated that Moscow continues to crave war and referred to Putin’s statement about possibly capturing the city of Sumy to establish a buffer zone.

This is to say the pressure the world is putting on them isn’t hurting them sufficiently,” Zelensky wrote on X. He continued, “The Russian economy is already falling apart. We will enhance this process further.”

Trump and Zelensky: A Tense History

The summit follows after Trump missed a potential meeting with Zelensky at the G7 summit in Geneva. Trump departed early because of the Iran-Israel conflict. Their previous face-to-face meeting at the White House concluded with tension. Trump accused Zelensky of ingratitude, and the Ukrainian leader shortened his visit.

Zelensky continues to be an important figure at the largest global forums. Nevertheless, he was left out from the NATO working group, partially because of his turbulent relations with Trump. Nonetheless, Wednesday’s session will be pivotal. It can redefine Ukraine’s military aid pipeline and reset Trump’s place in the war diplomacy.

Russian Missile and Drone Strike in Kyiv Kills 15, Injures Dozens

<excerpt>Russia strikes Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, killing at least 15 and flattening homes in its deadliest recent assault.
</excerpt>

Russia has initiated one of its most lethal attacks on Ukraine in months, killing a minimum of 15 and wounding dozens. The russian attack hit dozens of civilian locations in Kyiv and other cities. The nighttime offensive included over 440 drones and 32 missiles. Ukrainian authorities called it a wave of “pure terrorism.”

President Volodymyr Zelensky described the damage in the capital as one of the worst since the beginning of the war. Russia’s four-year-old full-scale invasion, which has worsened in the last few weeks with no indication of diplomatic gains, has seen intensified Russian shelling.

Russia Pounds Civilian Targets in Kyiv

The capital city of Kyiv experienced 27 sites targeted in successive waves of missile and drone attacks. A ballistic missile hit a nine-storey apartment building in the Solomianskyi district. The explosion reduced part of the building to rubble.

Emergency workers made their way to rescue survivors. One group employed a crane to lift an old woman on a stretcher through a window. Local resident Viktoriia Vovchenko, 57, commented, “I have never seen anything like this before. Children and olderly people were all mutilated. It’s appalling.”

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko affirmed that 14 were killed in Kyiv and one in Odesa. Almost 100 people were injured in Kyiv, Odesa, and Chernihiv.

American Among the Dead, Infrastructure Damaged

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that a 62-year-old American citizen died of shrapnel injuries. Schools and vital infrastructure also faced serious damage. President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the US and Europe to act firmly. “Such attacks are pure terrorism. Putin does this because he can afford to continue the war,” he declared.

Ukraine Strikes Back, Russia Claims Interceptions

Ukraine also launched drone attacks inside Russia. However, its strikes did not result in comparable civilian damage. Russia’s Defence Ministry said it intercepted 147 Ukrainian drones overnight, including over Moscow.

Despite two recent peace talks in Istanbul, Kyiv and Moscow have failed to reach a truce. Russian troops are advancing in eastern Ukraine and have opened a new front in the northeastern Sumy region.

US President Donald Trump, who previously vowed to “end the war quickly,” has urged for a ceasefire. His administration, though, has moved away from Kyiv and seems more open to Moscow’s version of events.

Trump Avoids Meeting Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is visiting Canada to attend the G7 summit, asked for stricter sanctions against Russia and greater weapons supplies. He had wished to see Trump but could not, as the US President departed the summit early in response to the Middle East crisis.

At the summit, Trump repeated his offer to reintegrate Russia into the G7. Interestingly, the bloc had expelled Russia in 2014 following its initial invasion of Ukraine. Trump’s policy shift, with vicious attacks like this one in Kyiv, shows deepening global fissures. As the conflict escalates, innocent civilians pay the highest price.

</excerpt>

Ukraine launched a surprise drone operation called Operation Spider Web on June 1. The mission followed 18 months of careful planning. Ukraine used 117 drones to strike deep into Russian territory. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the result as “absolutely brilliant.”

As a result, dozens of Russian aircraft were damaged. Ukraine estimated the total damage at $7 billion. Some have called the attack “Russia’s Pearl Harbor.”

Drones Target Multiple Russian Airbases

To carry out the mission, Ukraine smuggled drones into Russia and hid them in freight trucks. Then, operators launched them remotely from four different locations across the country.

The drones struck airfields in five Russian regions, covering five time zones. Notably, one airbase in Irkutsk, located over 2,600 miles from the front line, marked Ukraine’s deepest strike into Russia so far.

According to Ukrainian officials, the drones hit 41 aircraft, including Tu-95 and Tu-22 bombers as well as an A-50 radar plane. These aircraft had been used to bomb Ukrainian cities. Ukraine claimed it had destroyed 34% of Russia’s strategic bombers.

Experts Say Russia Will Struggle to Recover

Moreover, Ukrainian military analyst Oleksandr Kovalenko said on Telegram that Russia’s losses were serious. He wrote, “The extent of the damage is such that the Russian military-industrial complex, in its current state, is unlikely to be able to restore them in the near future.”

He also pointed out that the loss of the Tu-95, Tu-22, and Tu-160 bombers would hurt Russia’s ability to continue long-range attacks.

Russia Challenges Ukraine’s Claims

However, Russia disputed Ukraine’s version of events. Some Russian military bloggers said the damage was far less. For instance, the influential blogger Rybar reported only 13 aircraft were damaged, including up to 12 bombers.

Nevertheless, analysts say that even partial confirmation of Ukraine’s claims suggests a major shift in the war’s economics. Striking high-value assets deep inside Russia shows Ukraine’s growing strength.

Psychological Blow to Moscow

At the same time, experts agree that the attack delivered a major psychological blow to Russia. Lt. Gen. Ihor Romanenko, a former deputy chief of Ukraine’s general staff, told Al Jazeera, “This is a slap on the face for Russia, for FSB, for Putin.”

Similarly, Sven Biscop, a security expert at the Egmont Institute in Brussels, told NBC News, “At a time when Putin seems to think that he is winning on the battlefield, this demonstrates that his forces are in fact very vulnerable.” He added, “This may not change the course of the war, but it does mean that every gain Russia makes will be at high cost.”

In addition, Ukraine showed it can strike Russia’s key infrastructure. Since Russia depends on oil and gas facilities, experts say future drone attacks could hit its economy hard.

Operation Strengthens Ukraine’s Diplomatic Position

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy believes the strikes will push Russia towards negotiations. He said the operation proved that Russia is vulnerable.

As a result, Volodymyr Fesenko, head of the Penta think tank, told Al Jazeera, “Emotionally, psychologically and politically, the operation strengthens the positions of Ukrainian negotiators.” He also said the attack sent a clear message: Ukraine “won’t give up, won’t capitulate.”

Ukraine Also Sends Message to Washington

Importantly, the operation also appeared to send a message to the United States. On Monday, the White House confirmed it had not received advance notice from Ukraine.

Commenting on this, George Beebe, a former CIA Russia expert, told Foreign Policy that Ukraine was pressuring the US to act tougher. “In fact, after this operation, Zelenskyy made a public statement saying that it is urgently important that the US toughen sanctions on Russia—that’s the only way that Russia will come to the negotiating table,” he said. “So, I think the [Ukrainians’] target audience for this operation was here in Washington, not in Russia.”

What Happens Next?

Despite the strike, many analysts say it likely won’t change Putin’s war strategy. So far, the Kremlin shows no sign of backing down.

However, tensions have clearly increased. Some pro-Russian voices are calling for harsh retaliation. Russian military blogger Roman Alekhin wrote on Telegram, “We hope that the response will be the same as the US response to the attack on Pearl Harbor, or even tougher.”

Now, the world watches to see what Russia does next.

Putin Rejects Peace, US Lawmakers Demand 500% Tariffs — Trump Sides with Russia

<excerpt>Putin’s refusal to end the war sparks bipartisan US demand for massive tariffs on Russia and its trading partners.
</excerpt>

As Vladimir Putin refuses to accept peace proposals in Ukraine, US lawmakers have pushed for imposing 500% tariffs on Russia and countries trading with it. This comes after Russia launched its largest aerial attack yet on Ukraine. Though the proposed bill enjoys bipartisan support, President Donald Trump is unlikely to enforce it.

Since returning to the White House, Trump has aligned the administration with Russia. He has cut military aid to Ukraine, humiliated President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and echoed Kremlin propaganda.

Despite this, Zelenskyy has accepted three ceasefire proposals from Trump. Vladimir Putin, however, has rejected them all. Now, US lawmakers demand action. They want tough sanctions on Russia and its trading partners, including India and China, to stop the war machine.

Bipartisan Tariff Bill Gains Momentum

The proposed legislation is called the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025. It has strong bipartisan backing — co-signed by 50 senators, evenly split between Democrats and Republicans. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham sponsors the bill, with Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal as co-sponsor.

The bill demands 500% tariffs on all Russian goods and services. It also imposes the same on any country that continues buying Russian energy — oil, gas, uranium, or petrochemical products.

Secondary Tariffs May Hit Global Partners

The bill targets not just Russia but its trade enablers. Countries like India and China, who buy large quantities of Russian oil, will be affected. So will several European countries still reliant on Russian gas. The goal is to isolate Russia economically until it accepts peace in Ukraine.

Republicans Lead Push for Sanctions

Top Republican lawmakers have increased pressure on the White House. Senator Graham condemned Russia’s attack over the weekend and said the response would be strong. He added, “Without China’s support, Putin’s war machine comes to a halt.”

Representative Don Bacon criticized Trump’s passive stance. He said, “It’s beyond time to send Ukraine more lethal weapons. If Ukraine falls, it will be remembered that Trump did little to help.”

Trump’s Pro-Russia Stance Draws Fire

Trump has shown little interest in standing up to Putin. He invited Zelenskyy only to humiliate him. He slashed intelligence and military support for Ukraine. He falsely blamed Zelenskyy for the war and supported his rivals.

Though he has issued occasional rebukes to Putin online, he has not imposed real consequences. Instead, he has effectively endorsed Russia’s narrative and position.

Fight for Ukraine and the Global Order

Representative Brian Fitzpatrick called for immediate action. He urged Congress to deliver “crippling sanctions” that could collapse the Russian war machine. With Putin escalating attacks and Trump showing no urgency, the responsibility now rests with Congress.

If the United States fails to act decisively, it risks enabling more chaos in Ukraine — and weakening its global credibility.

</excerpt>

VlRussian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that the Russian military is actively establishing a “security buffer zone” along the Ukrainian border. This action is taken in the midst of continuing hostilities and in advance of the highly anticipated prisoner exchange between the two nations. According to Vladimir Putin, the endeavor is crucial to squelching enemy firing positions and reestablishing regional security.

Meanwhile, Ukraine, has denounced the plan as belligerent and a hindrance to peace initiatives. The announcement emphasizes Russia’s ongoing political and military strategy along its Ukrainian border as peace negotiations plod along.

Putin Details Buffer Zone Efforts and Border Security

According to Vladimir Putin, Russian troops are now establishing this buffer zone with the goal of removing enemy firing positions along the border. He underlined how crucial it is to repair and rebuild the border region that has been damaged by continuous hostilities. When security permits, President Vladimir Putin continued, authorities intend to assist citizens in returning to their hometown villages and communities. In order to facilitate this recovery, infrastructure and transportation will also be restored.

The Russian leader declared that a special meeting devoted to restoration projects would be held. This initiative comes after he recently visited the Kursk region of Russia, which Russia says it has completely retaken from Ukrainian forces.

During the visit, Putin spoke with local officials about the new buffer zone. The Institute for the Study of War reported that Putin was asked about the buffer zone depth in the Sumy region. He was also asked how many kilometers it should stretch.

Tensions on the Border Continue

According to reports, Ukrainian forces made an attempt to approach the Russian border during Putin’s visit. The first ground invasion of Russia by a foreign power since World War II occurred in August when Kyiv began an offensive into Russian territory. Until late last month, portions of the border region were under the control of Ukrainian forces. In any peace talks, Ukraine had used this region as a major negotiating chip.

Twelve civilians, including two children, were injured in a Ukrainian strike on the town of Lgov in the Kursk region in retaliation. The strike highlighted ongoing hostilities near the border by damaging cars, homes, and an apartment building.

Trump Backs Putin, Drops US Ceasefire Demand, Signals Exit from Mediation

<excerpt>Trump backs Putin’s terms in Ukraine war, signaling US withdrawal from active mediation and weakening Ukraine’s position.
</excerpt>

In a high stakes, two-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump sided with Russia in the Ukraine war. He dropped his own initiative for a 30-day ceasefire. Instead, he supported Putin’s call for immediate direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. The phone call took place on Monday. By making this action, Trump granted Russia yet another big diplomatic victory.

This US reversal followed when Ukraine and Europe wanted Washington to press Moscow. Trump’s move was a dramatic change of tone and direction. He said the United States might withdraw from mediation altogether in the near future. He even suggested that the Vatican could be a third-party location for negotiations.

Trump Rejects Western Calls for Ceasefire

Prior to the phone call, European leaders and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked Vladimir Putin to consent to an American-backed ceasefire. Trump disregarded their request. Instead, he supported Putin’s long-held stance of direct talks. It favors Russia since direct talks tend to protract and exhaust Ukraine’s allies.

Putin answered that he was still willing to write a peace memo. But he insisted that “root causes” be satisfied. Those include recognizing annexed Ukrainian land, the removal of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, restrictions on Ukraine’s military, and prohibition against joining NATO. Trump did not protest any of these terms.

Putin’s Maximalist Demands Go Unchallenged

Trump has offered three ceasefire proposals so far. President Putin rebuffed them all. With each attempt, the Kremlin held firm to its draconian terms. These include cultural domination of Ukraine and irrevocable Russian control in the region. Trump is now ready to accept or reject them.

US President Trump acknowledged that re-establishing relations with Russia matters more to him than stopping the war. He even made future American trade a bargaining chip. “Russia wants to do massive trade with the United States when this horror show is completed,” Trump said.

Trump Signals US Exit from Mediation Role

Trump indicated that he might walk away from mediation. He suggested the Vatican might step in. This move would officially conclude Washington’s erstwhile shuttle diplomacy. It would leave Ukraine to negotiate Russia alone at the table.

Putin put it succinctly. “I think something’s going to happen and if it doesn’t, I just back away and they’re going to have to keep going.”

Trump’s summons delivered a message: US pressure against Russia is off. His priority is resetting relations, not defending Ukraine’s sovereignty. That choice could remake the future of the war—and of global alignments.

</excerpt>

European leaders are supporting a 30-day ceasefire proposal ahead the high stakes call between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on Monday. On Sunday, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK PM Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Italian PM Giorgia Meloni called Trump to demonstrate solidarity. They urged Putin to sign the agreement, already supported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

But Vladimir Putin is not conceding. He initiated the biggest drone assault in Ukraine in months and is going to fire a long-range missile mere hours ahead of the Trump call.

European Leaders Support Ceasefire

French president Emmanuel Macron told X that Vladimir Putin would have to “demonstrate he wants peace” by agreeing to Trump’s offer. UK PM Keir Starmer said leaders did indeed discuss the ceasefire. He threatened sanctions still remain on the table if Putin does not comply. German and Italian officials made the same suggestion behind closed doors, diplomats said.

Tomorrow, President Putin must show he wants peace by accepting the 30-day unconditional ceasefire proposed by President Trump and backed by Ukraine and Europe.

— Emmanuel Macron (@EmmanuelMacron) May 18, 2025

Donald Trump will call Russian President Vladimir Putin at 10 AM ET on Monday, he said. Then he will call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the leaders of NATO—France, the UK, Germany, and Italy. Trump has offered three ceasefire proposals so far. Zelenskyy accepted all three. Putin refused all three.

Zelenskyy Meets Vance and Rubio in Rome

Volodymyr Zelenskyy met US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday at Pope Leo’s inauguration. It was the first time they met since Vance yelled at Zelenskyy during a confrontational White House visit in February.

This time around, the atmosphere was different. Zelenskyy declared the meeting “good” and stated that Ukraine is still prepared for genuine diplomacy. A senior Ukrainian official confirmed that they talked about the front line, sanctions, and the Trump-Putin call.

Putin Strikes Back Using Drones and Missile Plans

Vladimir Putin struck back with a vengeance. Saturday evening, Russia sent 273 drones against Kyiv, Donetsk, and Dnipropetrovsk. Ukraine’s air force described it as the largest attack in months.

Ukraine’s military intelligence agency also announced that Russia will test-fire an RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile on Monday. The missile has a non-nuclear warhead but makes a strong statement. The timing seeks to counter Trump’s peace initiatives.

Last week’s negotiations in Turkey were a bust. Russia sent a junior team and shunned serious talks. There was no breakthrough. Pressure is mounting now. NATO leaders, Ukraine, and the US are all on the same page. The world waits to see whether Putin gives or goes back on the offensive.

</excerpt>

Canada PM Mark Carney formally reasserted his government’s complete backing of Ukraine in his first face-to-face meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The two leaders arrived in Rome on Saturday, before Pope Leo XIV was inaugurated at the Vatican.

PM Mark Carney vowed that Canada would remain in “steadfast and unwavering” support of Ukraine and emphasized that peace cannot be achieved except through Kyiv’s participation. The meeting occurred just one day prior to a pivotal Vatican ritual that attracted world leaders, including those from Europe, the US, and the rest of the world.

Strong Vow from Canada’s New PM

PM Mark Carney, newly elected PM of Canada, made Ukraine a central issue during his first set of international engagements. Addressing Volodymyr Zelenskyy directly, he stated, “There can be no peace without the full support and participation of Ukraine.” He clearly established that Kyiv would enjoy the “absolute support” of Canada.

This unequivocal statement is indicative of an evident continuity in Canadian foreign policy regarding Ukraine, even with changing leadership.

Vatican Diplomacy Provides the Forum

The two leaders met in Rome, where they are both attending Sunday’s historic inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV. The great international occasion has proved to be a diplomatic forum for sideline summits among major world leaders.

The Pope’s inauguration drew a variety of leaders, offering a chance for intense geopolitical talks off the record and outside official summits.

US and G7 Framework Provide Cachet

US President Donald Trump has made plans to address both Russia and Ukraine’s presidents on Monday. His move follows the growing international attempts at influencing the way toward peace. In the meantime, PM Carney also took advantage of his time in Rome to hold meetings with Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, President Sergio Mattarella, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

These encounters are part of advance diplomatic efforts prior to the G7 summit, to be held in Canada this June. Strong words uttered by Carney in Rome indicate that Ukraine will be a priority on Canada’s global agenda. With this reaffirmation, Carney has made his inaugural grand foreign policy move—loudly and explicitly taking the side of Kyiv.

In an unexpected move, US President Donald Trump stood up for Vladimir Putin at the Turkey peace negotiations, even when the Russian leader avoided them. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine showed up in Ankara hoping to have direct talks.

But Vladimir Putin dispatched a low-level delegation and rejected the 30-day ceasefire demand supported by the United States. Nevertheless, Trump supported Putin’s action, leaving Zelenskyy politically vulnerable and diplomatically undermined.

Trump Shrugs Off Putin’s No-Show

US President Donald Trump played down Vladimir Putin’s absence. He said that there was no need for the Russian leader to come to Turkey talks. “Why would he go if I’m not going? I would go, but I wasn’t planning to go,” Trump told reporters on Thursday.

Vladimir Putin initially suggested the direct negotiations, leading Zelenskyy to acquiesce and demand leader-level talks. Putin then skipped the summit and refused the ceasefire. Zelenskyy also invited Trump to the talks. Trump only indicated that he could go “if something happened” on Friday.

Zelenskyy Finds Himself Alone Again

Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s direct diplomacy bet has failed. His invitations for a US-blessed ceasefire and high-level talks now seem like hollow offers. Trump’s constant stand for Putin has left Ukraine all the more alone.

Vladimir Putin has spurned three Trump-supported ceasefire overtures. He also discredited a peace proposal that yielded significant concessions to Russia. Nevertheless, Trump still takes the side of Putin and not Ukraine.

Trump Turns Against Ukraine

Donald Trump’s rhetoric has only become more vitriolic. Trump refers to Zelenskyy as an “unelected dictator,” faults Ukraine for initiating the war, and echoes Russian disinformation. Trump also withheld vital military and intelligence assistance, letting Russia advance in the Kursk region.

Trump’s approach has undermined decades of bipartisan US foreign policy. He has drawn America closer to Russia while attacking Ukraine and NATO.

Earlier in the week, Zelenskyy seemed to have backed Putin into a corner. If Putin showed up, he’d be giving Zelenskyy and Ukraine legitimacy. If he stayed away, he’d appear weak. But Trump came to the rescue. Now, Putin will avoid embarrassment — and Zelenskyy appears alone.

Turkey Talks Continue, But Expectations Crash

Regardless of Putin’s no-show, Russia and Ukraine will have lower-level discussions in Istanbul on Friday. The Russian team is headed by assistant Vladimir Medinsky and contains two deputy ministers. The Ukrainian side is led by Defence Minister Rustem Umerov.

Zelenskyy said that the talks have “no agenda” and entail “no high-level delegation.” He labeled Russia’s approach “unserious.

Medinsky, though, intends to insist on Moscow’s tough conditions. He added that peace would only be achieved by solving the “root causes” of the conflict — code for radical Russian demands such as regime change in Ukraine, restrictions on Ukrainian sovereignty, and the legitimation of occupied lands.

While Trump empowers Putin and ignores Ukraine, the way to peace appears shallow. Negotiations go on, but tangible advancement appears out of reach. Zelenskyy is increasingly isolated, with Putin having the support of the very nation once united with Kyiv.

</excerpt>

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated that he will not attend peace negotiations with Russia unless President Vladimir Putin is also present. The talks, to be held on Thursday in Istanbul, are being regarded as a turning point in the bid to bring an end to the conflict currently raging in Ukraine.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has publicly criticized Vladimir Putin for refusing to meet face-to-face and is convinced that direct meetings are crucial in making gains toward peace.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Bold Demand

He committed to a way out of war, summoned Vladimir Putin to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire, the first step to putting an end to the conflict. He insists that Putin’s involvement is essential. “Absolutely everything in Russia depends on him,” declared Zelenskyy. He went on further to blame Putin for dodging direct negotiations, calling him “scared” to meet him in person.

The negotiations have now taken center stage of US President Donald Trump’s efforts for peace. Trump, in a move to make peace, has revealed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will join the Istanbul talks. Other central personalities, including senior diplomats Steve Witkoff and Keith Kellogg, will also attend. Trump’s intervention sparks hope of an end, but it remains uncertain if Putin will attend.

Stakes for Ukraine

The Ukrainian President has made it amply clear that Ukraine will be willing to embrace a ceasefire, but under defined conditions. The 30-day ceasefire has to be all-encompassing, reaching land, air, sea, and strategic infrastructure, the president pointed out. The president also made it clear that he expected both the US and the European Union to implement robust sanctions if the negotiations fail to move forward.

Though Zelenskyy is advocating for peace, the issue is still complex. Russia has agreed to negotiate but would not likely grant any territorial concessions. Moscow believes that specific territories within Ukraine, which are under its control, should be designated as Russian. Zelenskyy’s call for international troops to serve as a deterrent in a demilitarized zone has also become the biggest contentious issue.

Trump’s Role in Peace Talks

US President Donald Trump has spoken of hope for the talks and said that the participants can soon achieve peace if everyone shows up. He thinks that a direct meeting between Zelenskyy, Putin, and himself can bring about a breakthrough. Trump’s intervention indicates how much the United States wants to end the conflict through diplomacy.

In a significant move, Trump is dispatching senior officials, including Rubio, to join the talks. In addition, Trump has signaled that if Putin attends, he too will be present. Trump’s initiative for peace marks a change in US foreign policy and underscores the increasing role of diplomacy in ending the crisis.

International Perspective

At the same time, the international community is observing the developments closely. Pope Leo has recently met with Zelenskyy and showed support for Ukraine‘s peace process. But skepticism abounds, particularly over whether Russia would be willing to make significant concessions. Russian officials have continuously reaffirmed their position on territorial claims, and negotiations have become challenging.

Despite these setbacks, the forthcoming talks in Istanbul are a turning point for dialogue. While the world holds its breath to know if Putin will meet him in person, Zelenskiy’s insistence on direct talks may spell the destiny of the war.

</excerpt>

Russia strikes eight Ukrainian towns 220 times in course of ceasefire. Russia attacked eight Ukrainian settlements in Zaporizhzhia 220 times over the course of 24 hours even after announcing a Victory Day-linked ceasefire. Governor Ivan Fedorov authenticated the attacks involved 150 drone strikes and 70 artillery fire. Ukraine rejected the truce as a “farce” with senior officials reporting more than 700 ceasefire breaches.

President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced Russia’s actions as hypocritical and reaffirmed Ukraine’s resolve to a US-sponsored 30-day ceasefire instead. Civilians, meanwhile, endure power outages, destroyed infrastructure, and increasing fear. The alleged ceasefire has now turned into another bout of savagery, diplomatic ambiguity, and mounting humanitarian expense.

A ‘Farce’ in the View of Ukraine

Ukrainian authorities have termed the ceasefire a “farce,” reporting more than 700 breaches in the first 12 hours of its enforcement. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and President Volodymyr Zelensky have both denounced the truce as a political move and not an actual step towards peace.

Even after the announced ceasefire, Russian troops continued offensive operations, such as drone attacks that caused civilian casualties in northeastern areas.

Continuing Hostilities Despite Diplomatic Initiatives

Although hostilities eased somewhat, with no missile or drone attacks reported by Ukraine’s air force early on Thursday, skirmishes and local fighting continued. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the Moscow parade as a “parade of cynicism.” He again reaffirmed Ukraine’s support for a US-suggested 30-day ceasefire, which Russia has not yet officially agreed to, requiring enforcement mechanisms before accepting.

Kyiv and Moscow are both pressured by US President Donald Trump to call for the war, now in its third year, to end. Diplomatic negotiations among US, French, British, and German representatives are ongoing to negotiate a longer ceasefire.

Human Cost of Ceasefire Violations

The relentless attacks have weighed on the civilian population. In Zaporizhzhia, the incessant shelling has left villages in the dark, impacting more than 3,300 citizens. The humanitarian effect is dire, with infrastructure ruined and civilian lives interrupted. Despite the announced ceasefire, the situation is still critical, with no visible path to peace ahead.

The recent events highlight the difficulties in attaining long-term peace in the region. Diplomatic attempts remain ongoing, yet the ground situation tells a different tale. The world looks on anxiously, awaiting a sincere commitment towards peace and a halt to the agony of innocent civilians.

US President Donald Trump raised doubts about Vladimir Putin’s real intentions in ending the Ukraine war. After meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Rome, Trump posted his concerns online. He said he feared Putin was “tapping me along” after Russia’s latest missile strikes on Kyiv. Trump added, there was “no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas.”

Private Talks at St. Peter’s Basilica

Earlier that day, Trump and Zelensky had a private conversation inside St. Peter’s Basilica before Pope Francis’s funeral began.
The White House later described the 15-minute meeting as “very productive.” Meanwhile, Zelensky said the meeting had the “potential to become historic.”

Tense History Between Trump and Zelensky

This meeting was their first since February’s tense Oval Office encounter. Back then, Trump had told Zelensky, “you don’t have the cards,” suggesting Ukraine was losing the fight against Russia. He repeated the same view this week, saying Zelensky had “no cards to play.”

On Truth Social, Trump criticized Russia’s attacks. He wrote, “makes me think that maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war, he’s just tapping me along, and has to be dealt with differently, through ‘Banking’ or ‘Secondary Sanctions?'”

Russia Claims Readiness for Talks

Earlier, Trump said Russia and Ukraine were “very close to a deal” after his envoy, Steve Witkoff, held three hours of talks with Putin. Furthermore, the Kremlin confirmed on Saturday that Putin told Witkoff Russia was ready for direct talks with Ukraine “without preconditions.”

Powerful Images from the Meeting

Photos from Rome captured Trump and Zelensky sitting across from each other. Trump wore a blue suit, and Zelensky wore a black top and trousers. They appeared deep in conversation.

Additionally, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha posted a photo of the meeting on X. He wrote, “No words are needed to describe the importance of this historic meeting. Two leaders working for peace in St. Peter’s Basilica.”

Another image showed Trump and Zelensky standing with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron placed a supportive hand on Zelensky’s shoulder, suggesting that both Macron and Starmer helped bring the two leaders together.

A Symbolic Walk and Crowds’ Applause

After the meeting, Trump and Zelensky walked together down the steps of the basilica. Crowds applauded Zelensky’s arrival. Both leaders then took front-row seats for the funeral service.

During the service, they sat close but separated by Macron and other leaders. In his homily, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re remembered Pope Francis’s call for peace. “‘Build bridges, not walls’ was an exhortation he repeated many times,” said the cardinal.

No Second Meeting with Trump

Afterwards, Ukrainian officials spoke about a possible second meeting. However, Trump’s motorcade quickly left St. Peter’s Basilica. Soon after, his plane took off from Rome.

Meanwhile, Zelensky stayed for other important meetings. He met Macron at Villa Bonaparte, the French embassy to the Holy See. He also met Starmer at Villa Wolkonsky, the British ambassador’s residence, and held talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Leaders Emphasize the Need for Peace

Later, Macron posted on X that ending the Ukraine war was a goal “we share in common with President Trump.” He added that Ukraine was ready for “an unconditional ceasefire.”

Similarly, a Downing Street spokesperson said Starmer and Zelensky discussed the “positive progress” toward a “just and lasting peace in Ukraine.” They agreed to “maintain momentum” and “speak again at the earliest opportunity.”

Pressure on Ukraine for Concessions

Back in February, during the heated White House meeting, Trump had accused Zelensky of “gambling with World War Three” by refusing ceasefire plans from Washington.

Since then, Trump has pressured Ukraine to make territorial concessions to Moscow. Reports suggest this could include giving up large areas of land, including Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014.

Nevertheless, Zelensky has firmly rejected these ideas. Speaking to the BBC on Friday, he said, “a full and unconditional ceasefire opens up the possibility to discuss everything.”

</excerpt>

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump met at the Vatican on Saturday. Their reunion, the first since they were pictured publicly arguing at the White House, could be “historic,” said Zelenskyy.

Good meeting. We discussed a lot one on one. Hoping for results on everything we covered. Protecting lives of our people. Full and unconditional ceasefire. Reliable and lasting peace that will prevent another war from breaking out. Very symbolic meeting that has potential to… pic.twitter.com/q4ZhVXCjw0

— Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський (@ZelenskyyUa) April 26, 2025

The two leaders had a one-on-one meeting at St Peter’s Basilica in preparation for Pope Francis’ funeral. They met while Trump advocates for a complete ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. Both sides now hope to reboot serious negotiations.

Meeting That Could Reframe the Peace Initiative

Photos captured Trump and Zelenskyy sitting only two feet from each other, leaning forward over a marble hallway. The two “had a very productive discussion,” a White House official reported.

Zelenskyy subsequently stated on X that the discussion could be “historic” if it results in enduring peace. He confirmed they also spoke about defending Ukraine, the requirement of a full ceasefire, and the aspiration for a lasting solution to avoid future wars.

The session took around 15 minutes. Zelenskyy’s press secretary confirmed that they agreed to resume negotiations later on Saturday. Trump, however, departed Rome immediately after the funeral, and the timing of future negotiations was left uncertain.

World Leaders Bear Witness to Historic Moment

French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer witnessed part of the negotiations. The French presidency labeled the meeting as “positive.”

After showing respects at the coffin of Pope Francis, Zelenskyy was applauded by other world leaders, a testament to the global support that Ukraine still enjoys.

Sir Tony Brenton, who used to be the British ambassador to Russia, said to Sky News that this may prove to be an important diplomatic window. He proposed that the Trump-Zelenskyy meetings could represent “an important step” toward reviving direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

Larger Diplomatic Moves Behind the Scenes

This two-way meeting follows Trump’s peace envoy, Steve Witkoff, meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov described the talks as “constructive” and mentioned talks about reviving direct Russia-Ukraine negotiations.

Trump has repeatedly expressed himself as wanting to reach a peace agreement in a hurry. He has threatened that if negotiations are stuck, his administration might abandon its diplomatic efforts. In recent statements, he urged both sides to “get it done.”

In the meantime, tensions remain elevated. Poland has reported a Russian military helicopter breaching its airspace above the Baltic Sea on Friday. Polish forces characterized it as a “test” of their air defence capabilities.

Hope and Skepticism: What Happens Next?

The Trump-Zelenskyy summit is actual hope for the conclusion of the Ukraine war. Yet, profound distrust exists on both sides. Russia and Ukraine have not engaged in direct negotiations since the initial weeks of the 2022 invasion.

Although Trump’s optimism provides momentum, significant hurdles still exist. In the meantime, both leaders have made a symbolic gesture, demonstrating that conversation continues to be an option despite extreme strain.

</excerpt>

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met US President Donald Trump in Rome hours after Trump said Ukraine and Russia are “very close” to agreeing a ceasefire. The two leaders met as they were both attending Pope Francis’ funeral. It was their first face-to-face meeting since they had their fiery White House confrontation in February. Trump’s words suggested a breakthrough in peace negotiations.

But Crimea, lethal attacks on Kyiv, and new bloodshed in Moscow continue to cloud the way. The encounter catches a pivotal moment where optimism for peace is confronted with profound and agonizing realities.

Zelenskyy and Trump Reunite

Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s representative Sergiy Nykyforov confirmed the meeting. He said that it “took place and is already over” without providing further information. The two leaders had not met since their sudden falling out last February.

Their new meeting indicates an attempt to restore dialogue in spite of tensions and disagreements regarding major issues.

Trump Says Ukraine and Russia Close to Ceasefire

Earlier in the day, Trump stated that Russia and Ukraine were “very close” to achieving a ceasefire. He implored both parties to meet at the top level to “finish it off.” His positive attitude is a stark difference compared to his previous threats to pull US support if negotiations collapsed.

He threatened that if Russia refused to accept the deal, “Things will happen.”

Zelenskyy Refuses to Surrender Crimea

Volodymyr Zelenskyy held fast on Crimea. He asserted that Ukraine would not give up the peninsula. His firm stance makes any speedy bargain difficult. There are reports the United States had offered freezing lines and recognizing Russian control over Crimea in exchange for peace. But Zelenskyy’s refusal cuts that avenue short.

Putin Meets US Envoy as Violence Grows

Russian President Vladimir Putin also received US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said their meeting was “constructive.” They discussed resuming direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv.

But optimism fell after a top Russian general was killed in a car bombing near Moscow. The assassination brought fresh pressure to bear on the tenuous peace effort.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Moscow is “ready to make a deal” but noted that numerous “details” remain to be solved.

Fragile Diplomacy: Hope Meets Skepticism

The Rome summit and recent diplomacy indicate momentum toward negotiations. But continuing violence, Ukraine’s refusal to budge on Crimea, and skepticism in the US administration indicate how fragile the situation is.

As Ukraine and Russia move toward negotiations, entrenched distrust and tough concessions still loom over prospects for durable peace.

Russia’s Easter Pause Sparks Ukrainian Outrage: Truce or Trap?

<excerpt>Russia’s Easter truce draws criticism from Ukraine, which accuses Moscow of exploiting the pause to advance militarily.
</excerpt>

Russia’s Easter ceasefire has infuriated Ukraine, which blames Russia’s military for using the break to advance. On April 19-21, Russia announced an Easter truce. But Ukraine says Russia employed the lull to shift troops and military equipment, particularly to the east.

The supposed misuse of Russia’s ceasefire has created fresh skepticism about the war’s endgame to observe such breaks.

Russia’s Strategic Manipulation of the Ceasefire

On April 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a ceasefire until April 21. But Ukraine swiftly accused Russia of taking advantage of the pause to redeploy forces and bring in heavy equipment onto the front lines. Ukraine stated no ceasefire in Kursk, further intensifying tensions. Russia’s action prompted Ukraine to claim that Russia never actually suspended its offensive.

The Ukrainian Khartiia Brigade stated that Russia took advantage of the ceasefire to advance more troops into eastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. These tactics left Russia better off after the ceasefire. Accounts also reported Russia laid out pathways for heavy vehicles, indicating an intention to restrengthen its military presence while it was in the lull.

Accusations on Both Sides

Ceasefire violations weren’t unilateral. Russia blamed Ukraine for violating the truce. Ukraine, though, refuted the allegations saying there were no serious violations made from their front. The inconsistent reports only perpetuate the trust issue between both countries, complicating it even further to think of peace happening.

The Easter ceasefire cast doubt on the efficacy of such breaks in this protracted war. Russia’s success in taking advantage of the truce for tactical gains demonstrates its strategic strategy. While ceasefire violations continue to complicate attempts to bring the fighting to a stop, these moves indicate that Russia is gearing up for more forceful operations after the ceasefire expires.

The Easter truce showed how hard it is to bring a genuine ceasefire to this war. Russia employed the break to deepen its footholds, while accusing Ukraine of viola tion. As accusations swirl and battles rage on, peace still evades them. The truce underscored the recurrent manipulation of ceasefires, which only serves to drag out the conflict and intensify suffering.

</excerpt>

Both Russia and Ukraine accused one another on Easter Sunday of breaking a one-day truce to observe the religious holiday. The short-lived ceasefire, announced by Russian leader Vladimir Putin, was intended to ease tensions as Orthodox Easter was being celebrated.

Despite this agreement, both sides reported scores of assaults during the day, reflecting how challenging it is to attain lasting peace in this disastrous war.

Ukraine Accuses Russia of Breaching the Ceasefire

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine rejected Russia’s claim of respecting the ceasefire outright, stating that Russian forces were still shelling positions. Between midnight and midday, Russia had made 26 attacks, violating the spirit of the ceasefire, Zelenskyy stated.

He denounced Vladimir Putin for not being able to control his troops or using the ceasefire as a PR strategy instead of having any real interest in peace.

Russia’s Counterclaim: Ukraine Violates the Ceasefire

Russia’s Defence Ministry responded differently, blaming Ukraine for violating the truce over 1,000 times. The Russian armed forces reported 444 attacks on Russian positions, in addition to over 900 drone attacks.

BREAKING: Russia has accused Ukraine of breaking the Easter ceasefire declared by Putin yesterday. https://t.co/GlUOzUFPFK

Russia alleged that the attacks resulted in civilian casualties and extensive damage to infrastructure, particularly in the Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod regions.

Implications for Trump’s Peace Efforts

The collapse of even a short Easter ceasefire is a strong sign of how challenging it will be for US President Donald Trump to facilitate a substantial peace deal. Trump has long tried to cast himself as a peacemaker, but this collapse indicates just how deeply entrenched the two sides are in the war.

His latest statements that he would walk away from peace talks unless something happens are an indication of his increasing frustration with the situation.

Zelenskyy’s Stand: No Peace Without Action

Despite the violations, Zelenskyy is willing to extend the ceasefire, calling on Russia to demonstrate its commitment to peace. He threatened, however, that Ukraine would keep fighting if Russia maintained its military operations.

This standoff illustrates the challenges in any agreement as both sides stick to their stands.

Role of International Mediators

Whereas the United Nations and the European Union have pressed both parties into a true peace process, the unilateral moves of Russia indicate it might not be truly interested in peace.

Vladimir Putin has expressed appreciation to international brokers, such as Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, but failure to take real action indicates that the conflict has a complex dynamic.

Despite the failures, Zelenskyy remains upbeat about the defense of Ukraine and its aim of sovereignty. Standing before Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv on Easter, he reminded Ukrainians of the fight they are in and their steadfast desire for peace. But with each failed truce, the prospect of peace becomes more and more distant.

</excerpt>

Britain has called on Russia to agree to a complete and permanent ceasefire in Ukraine, dismissing President Vladimir Putin’s recent 30-hour Easter break as a symbolic gesture that lacked sincerity. The UK call comes after warnings from the US of walking away from peace negotiations unless both parties demonstrate genuine commitment to stopping the war.

Though Ukraine is still cautious, citing ongoing Russian shelling, Britain argues that only an indefinite cessation of hostilities can pave the way for serious talks. International friends such as Italy have repeated the call, asserting that temporary suspensions bring minimal relief to civilians or aid workers.

Without substantive action, the world’s trust in Russia’s peace overtures continues to slide.

Putin’s 30-Hour Ceasefire

On April 19, Vladimir Putin made a unilateral Easter ceasefire. It was to go into effect at 6 PM. Moscow time and conclude at midnight on the following day. He invited Ukraine to retaliate. The Kremlin asserted the move would display peace intentions.

Still, the timing has been questioned. Only days ago, the US threatened to pull out of peace talks unless both parties agree to halt fighting. Hence, critics label Putin’s decision as tactical and reactive.

Ukraine Remains Wary

Ukrainian leaders are still not convinced. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated Russia can’t speak peace while conducting attacks. The Russians, according to Ukrainian forces, continued shelling even after the ceasefire was in effect. Therefore, Kyiv was not inclined to suspend its military campaign.

Zelenskyy has also insisted on a complete withdrawal of Russian forces as the prerequisite for peace. Without it, Ukraine finds no reason to believe in Putin’s words.

Britain’s Tough Stand

Britain has reacted firmly. A foreign ministry official stated, “Ukraine has pledged a complete ceasefire. We call on Russia to do the same.” The UK is calling on Russia to demonstrate that it really wants peace.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office further stated, “Now is the time for Putin to demonstrate he is serious.” They emphasized that only a complete ceasefire could lead the way to permanent peace negotiations.

Other Allies Join In

Italy also seconded the UK position. Both countries have advocated for a complete, unconditioned ceasefire. They feel that any pause should result in actual progress—not be a diversion.

While international observers caution that brief pauses provide little respite to civilians, aid workers also indicate humanitarian corridors require longer than one day to function safely.

Prospects: Stalemate or Ceasefire?

The war in Ukraine continues to rage on. With the fighting ongoing, gestures of symbolism stand to lose their credibility. For peace to hold, trust must once again be regained. And for trust, the violence needs to end first.

Unless it does, the world can expect more ceasefire headlines—but less actual peace.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met King Charles shortly after his tense exchange with former US President Donald Trump at the White House. His visit followed an emergency summit in London, where European leaders urged him to mend ties with Trump, as reported.

Zelenskyy, dressed in all black, traveled by helicopter to Sandringham. King Charles warmly welcomed him, and they shook hands outside the royal estate. However, as per royal protocol, Buckingham Palace did not disclose details of their discussion.

Tensions Over Trump’s UK State Visit

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy’s meeting with Charles took place as UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer faced mounting pressure to cancel Trump’s state visit invitation. Just 48 hours earlier, Zelenskyy had endured a difficult White House meeting with Trump and Vice President JD Vance. Upon his arrival in the UK, Starmer greeted him warmly. Earlier, Starmer told the BBC he felt “uncomfortable” watching Zelenskyy’s tense interaction with Trump.

King Charles Stands with Ukraine

Notably, King Charles has been a strong supporter of Ukraine. As Zelenskyy arrived at Sandringham, local residents gathered outside, waving Ukrainian flags. This visit marked their second meeting, as they had first met in February 2023—making Charles the first British monarch to welcome a Ukrainian head of state. At that time, the King told Zelenskyy, “We’ve all been worried about you and thinking about your country.”

In previous statements, Charles has condemned Russia’s invasion, calling it an “unprovoked attack” that brought “indescribable aggression” upon Ukraine. Last year, he also praised Ukrainians for their “truly remarkable courage and resilience.”

Starmer Rejects Demands to Cancel Trump’s Visit

At the same time, Starmer dismissed growing calls to revoke Trump’s state visit invitation. On March 2, Scottish First Minister John Swinney insisted that any visit should require Trump to “stand fully with us in protecting Ukraine.” He argued that if Trump refused, “a UK state visit shouldn’t be on the table.”

However, Starmer rejected these demands. “I’m not going to be diverted by the SNP or others trying to ramp up the rhetoric,” he told Newsweek.

Similarly, SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn criticized Starmer, urging him to “get back up off his knees and revoke that offer of a state visit.” Nevertheless, Starmer stood firm. Speaking to the BBC, he emphasized, “I’m focused on practical steps, bridge-building, and fostering relationships that lead to lasting peace in Europe.”

</excerpt>

The diplomatic impasse between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former U.S. President Donald Trump—characterized by the abrupt cancellation of a joint press conference and a discernible breakdown in dialogue—epitomizes Zelenskyy’s unwillingness to engage in pragmatic statecraft.
Instead of adopting a diplomatic framework conducive to a sustainable resolution, his leadership reflects an entrenched commitment to militarized confrontation.
His persistent aversion to diplomatic overtures, coupled with an unrelenting demand for Western military patronage, underscores a strategic myopia that not only exacerbates Ukraine’s internal vulnerabilities but also heightens geopolitical tensions on a global scale.

The Hubris of Dependency: Zelenskyy’s Diplomatic Miscalculations
A nation heavily reliant on the goodwill of its allies must demonstrate a nuanced understanding of the inherent asymmetries governing such dependencies. However, Zelenskyy’s diplomatic engagement with U.S. leadership was defined by an unmistakable disregard for geopolitical realism, exemplified in his confrontational posture during White House deliberations. Trump, a staunch advocate of transactional diplomacy, unequivocally exposed Ukraine’s strategic precariousness, stating, “You don’t have any cards.” This assertion starkly highlighted Kyiv’s overreliance on Western largesse—an untenable foundation for long-term security.
Vice President JD Vance, a proponent of a recalibrated American foreign policy, appropriately criticized Zelenskyy’s dismissive disposition, challenging his self-ascribed role as a moral arbitrator on the international stage. When Zelenskyy attempted to undermine Vance’s credibility by questioning his understanding of Ukraine’s predicament, he inadvertently showcased his proclivity for rhetorical deflection over substantive discourse. This failure to construct a coherent strategic argument—beyond the perpetual solicitation of military aid—exemplifies a leadership philosophy governed by symbolic posturing rather than tangible outcomes.

Strategic Pragmatism vs. Zelenskyy’s Escalation Doctrine
Trump’s policy orientation—anchored in economic pragmatism and national interest—offered Ukraine a strategic lifeline through a mineral rights partnership, a proposal that could have fortified Ukraine’s long-term economic resilience. Zelenskyy’s outright rejection of this initiative underscores his prioritization of sustained hostilities over economic revitalization. His refusal to entertain such avenues reflects a fundamental aversion to diplomatic concessions, demonstrating an alarming rigidity in strategic thought. A leader devoted to national survival would have embraced economic cooperation as a stabilizing force. However, Zelenskyy’s myopic approach reveals an operational paradigm governed exclusively by immediate military imperatives rather than an integrative vision of economic and geopolitical stability. His insistence on prolonging hostilities, rather than engaging in substantive negotiations, suggests a perception of conflict as an instrument for sustaining international patronage rather than a crisis necessitating resolution.

World Leaders React: Diverging Responses to Zelenskyy’s Approach
International responses to Zelenskyy’s diplomatic rigidity have been markedly heterogeneous. French President Emmanuel Macron, while maintaining nominal solidarity with Ukraine, has subtly alluded to the imperative of a negotiated settlement, acknowledging that a protracted conflict is antithetical to European security. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, facing mounting domestic pressures, has begun reconsidering Berlin’s unwavering support, as the economic toll of continuous military aid strains German resources. Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has navigated a balanced geopolitical approach, maintaining economic ties with Russia while advocating for dialogue, reinforcing India’s strategic commitment to diplomatic neutrality.
China, recognizing the broader implications of the conflict, has positioned itself as a potential mediator, criticizing Western interventionism while cautiously advocating for de-escalation. Conversely, Russian President Vladimir Putin has strategically capitalized on Zelenskyy’s diplomatic missteps, reinforcing the narrative that Ukraine remains an uncompromising actor unwilling to engage in substantive peace efforts. The Global South, increasingly skeptical of the conflict’s trajectory, has echoed concerns over its ramifications for global trade and economic stability, with Brazil and South Africa championing an end to hostilities.

Geopolitical Recklessness: A Precursor to Global Conflagration
Trump’s warning to Zelenskyy—”You’re gambling with World War III”—constitutes a prescient critique of Ukraine’s strategic recklessness. By consistently rejecting diplomatic overtures and framing the conflict as an existential struggle necessitating indefinite Western intervention, Zelenskyy risks fomenting an escalatory spiral with potentially catastrophic global consequences. His unwavering commitment to militarized resistance, absent considerations of broader geopolitical stability, reflects a perilous gamble with international security.
Zelenskyy’s diplomatic posture has transitioned from that of a wartime leader seeking assistance to a liability impeding meaningful de-escalation. His persistent refusal to acknowledge the geopolitical limitations of his position—combined with his implicit presumption of Western aid as an unqualified entitlement—renders Ukraine an increasingly untenable security partner. The longer this posture endures, the greater the likelihood of sustained warfare, with ramifications extending well beyond Ukraine’s borders.

The Imperative of Realist Leadership
Trump and JD Vance, in adhering to a doctrine of strategic pragmatism, articulated a path toward economic and geopolitical stability, one rooted in realism rather than ideological intransigence. In contrast, Zelenskyy’s leadership ethos appears predicated on conflict perpetuation rather than resolution. His resistance to negotiated settlements constitutes a direct impediment to global stability, necessitating a recalibrated Western approach to Ukraine’s war effort.
For international policymakers, this juncture demands a critical reassessment of unqualified endorsements of Ukraine’s war strategy. The conflation of military support with an inexorable escalation doctrine must be challenged, lest global actors become unwitting enablers of an unending conflict driven by Ukrainian leadership unwilling to compromise. A recalibrated, diplomacy-oriented strategy is not merely desirable—it is an imperative for global security.
The fundamental question now emerges: will Zelenskyy embrace the imperatives of statecraft, or will he persist in an approach that risks global conflagration?

On Friday, Macron further emphasized that, if this happens, only Ukraine should lead the discussions to achieve a “solid and lasting peace.” In a post on X, he wrote, “I just spoke with President @ZelenskyyUa.
Moreover, Macron stressed the need for stronger European security. There, he will meet US Vice President JD Vance and other White House officials. He aims to encourage Trump’s team to bring both sides of the conflict to the negotiating table, pushing for a resolution.

Zelenskyy on European and US Support

Regarding international support, Zelenskyy emphasized that Europe’s assistance is insufficient without the backing of the US. He stated, “There are voices which say that Europe could offer security guarantees without the Americans, and I always say no. Security guarantees without America are not real security guarantees.”

Furthermore, he explained that if the US remains committed to supporting Ukraine, American companies could take part in rebuilding Ukraine post-conflict. He noted, “Those who are helping us to save Ukraine will [have the chance to] renovate it, with their businesses together with Ukrainian businesses.”

Trump Proposes Ukraine’s Mineral Resources

In a related development, Trump has suggested that Ukraine should offer the US $500 billion worth of its mineral resources in exchange for continued aid. He believes that this would help compensate for the vast sums Washington has spent supporting Ukraine during the war.

Zelenskyy revealed that he first discussed this idea with Trump during their meeting in New York last September. He plans to follow up with a more detailed proposal that outlines opportunities for US companies in both Ukraine’s postwar reconstruction and the extraction of its valuable natural resources.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for the United States to provide security guarantees for Ukraine. He warned that, without US involvement, NATO could become weaker, leading to increased aggression from the Kremlin toward Europe.

NATO’s Role Under Threat

In an interview with podcaster Lex Fridman, published on Sunday, Zelenskyy stressed the importance of the US remaining in NATO to maintain stability in Europe. He explained, “If it does (quit the alliance), Putin will destroy Europe,” indicating the severe consequences of a reduced NATO presence.

Plans to Meet Trump

Furthermore, Zelenskyy expressed hope to meet President-elect Donald Trump after his inauguration. He believes that direct discussions are essential to create a strategy to confront Russian aggression. As February marks three years since Russia’s invasion, Zelenskyy acknowledged that Trump’s return to the White House could potentially pave the way for a ceasefire agreement. However, he cautioned that such a deal could come at a significant cost.

US Support is Critical

Zelenskyy also pointed out that European nations cannot tackle Russia alone. He firmly stated, “Without the United States, security guarantees are not possible. These are the guarantees needed to prevent Russian aggression,” underlining the critical role of the US in global security.

Putin Rejects Negotiations

Additionally, Zelenskyy emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown no interest in negotiating an end to the conflict. He called for greater international pressure on the Kremlin to agree to a truce, highlighting the need for united global efforts to resolve the crisis.

In conclusion, Zelenskyy’s remarks reflect the urgency of US involvement in securing Ukraine’s safety and the necessity of pressuring Russia to halt its aggression.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and French President Emmanuel Macron in Brussels to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence and unite Europe in support of Ukraine during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Meeting with NATO Chief

Upon his arrival in Brussels, Zelenskyy held important talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The primary focus was on enhancing Ukraine’s air defence capabilities and securing stronger security guarantees. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to NATO and its partners for their willingness to enhance Ukraine’s defences. He emphasized that these efforts are crucial as Ukraine moves towards a diplomatic solution.

Zelenskyy shared the details of the meeting on social media, stating, “Brussels. An important and very substantive meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Our talks focused on strengthening air defense for Ukraine and ensuring the reliability of the peace we are collectively working to achieve. We thank Mark, NATO Secretary General, and all our partners for their willingness to more actively enhance our air shield and work together for effective security guarantees.”

Building European Unity for Peace

Moreover, Zelenskyy highlighted the need for a unified European position to bring an end to the war. He wrote, “Europe needs a strong, united position to ensure lasting peace.” He further stressed that resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict requires coordinated efforts from European nations.

During his visit, Zelenskyy planned to meet with leaders from Germany, Poland, and Italy. Additionally, he confirmed his participation in the European Council Meeting. This demonstrates Ukraine’s commitment to strengthening both its defences and European unity in facing the crisis.

Talks with French President Macron

Later, Zelenskyy held productive discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron. They focused on Ukraine’s air defence needs and military support. Zelenskyy expressed appreciation for France’s preparation of a brigade for Ukraine’s army, as well as the country’s ongoing support in training and equipping additional brigades.

Zelenskyy posted, “I had a productive meeting with French President @EmmanuelMacron. We had a detailed one-on-one discussion, focusing on key priorities to further strengthen Ukraine’s position against Russian aggression. A clear focus remains enhancing air defense capabilities.”

In addition, Zelenskyy commended Macron’s initiative to deploy forces in Ukraine to help stabilize the situation and pave the way for peace. He noted, “We share a common vision: reliable guarantees are essential for a peace that can truly be achieved. Emmanuel informed about his communication with other partners aimed at ensuring all necessary steps are taken for peace. Thank you, France!”

Zelenskyy’s meetings in Brussels represent a significant step towards strengthening Ukraine’s defences and securing broader European unity against Russian aggression. </excerpt>

Kyiv [Ukraine], October 27 — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reported a sharp increase in Russian military attacks, alleging that over the past week alone, Russia launched more than 1,100 guided aerial bombs, over 560 strike drones, and around 20 different missiles across Ukraine.

Zelenskyy’s Message to Ukrainians

In a recent social media post on X, President Zelenskyy addressed the ongoing challenges, writing, “Russia does not stop its terror against Ukraine. Daily, it launches aggression against our people, cities, and villages, using various types of weapons.” He went on to express gratitude to the resilient Ukrainian defense forces and support teams who work tirelessly to protect and save lives.

“I want to express my gratitude to our people who work day and night to protect Ukrainians from Russian attacks, provide assistance, and are always ready to save lives,” Zelenskyy shared in his post.

Ukraine’s Defensive Strategy

Zelenskyy highlighted ongoing efforts by his administration to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses and collaborate with international allies, stating, “We are working hard with our partners to stop the enemy, strengthen Ukraine, and provide maximum protection for our people so that this Russian terror becomes impossible.”

Despite bolstering its defense systems with Western support, Ukraine is facing unprecedented daily bombardments, particularly in its eastern and southern regions. The escalating attacks have spurred calls for more sophisticated and long-range defense capabilities.

Escalation of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, thousands of civilian lives have been lost amid airstrikes and assaults on urban centers. While Moscow denies targeting civilians, international observers and evidence from residential strikes have pointed to severe and widespread impacts on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

Russia’s ongoing strategy has relied on a diverse arsenal, from guided bombs and missiles to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), aiming to cripple critical infrastructure and demoralize Ukraine. In response, Ukraine continues to appeal for international support to fortify its defense capabilities against the relentless aerial assaults.
