</excerpt>

A retired top commando who battled terrorists during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks has come down heavily on the Thackeray cousins in the wake of Maharashtra’s current Marathi language controversy. Shaurya Chakra awardee Praveen Kumar Teotia, who wrote 26/11 Braveheart: My Encounter with Terrorists That Night, blamed Raj and Uddhav Thackeray for being nowhere to be seen when Mumbai witnessed its worst terror attack in 2008.

“I saved Mumbai on 26/11. I bleed for Maharashtra. I’m from UP. I saved the Taj Hotel. Where were Raj Thackeray’s so-called warriors? Don’t divide the nation. Smiles don’t require any language,” said Mr. Teotia in a public statement.

26/11 Real Heroes Came From UP and Bihar, Says Teotia

In a conversation with ANI, Teotia reiterated his attack, saying that it was not the Thackerays but Uttar Pradesh and Bihar military personnel who fought on the frontlines during the 2008 assaults.

“He (Raj Thackeray) himself, along with Uddhav Thackeray and his family, could also not be found. People who saved others, such as army personnel, were primarily from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. I was there, (I) handled the situation, and faced the terrorists. I am also from UP and come from the village of (former prime minister) Chaudhary Charan Singh,” he told reporters.

Calls for Unity, Not Language Politics

Teotia made it clear that he has great regard for Marathi and Maratha soldiers, but criticized using language as a political tool. “I am proud of Marathi and Maratha warriors. Don’t let such losers separate us from each other. Language should not be part of politics,” he said. He asked the leaders to work on actual issues such as unemployment, development, education, health, and terrorism.

The Thackerays have not yet responded. The furore is over a since-withdrawn Maharashtra school three-language policy, which critics accused of being an imposition of Hindi. Raj Thackeray, who has been known to take a radical position, is criticized for perceived assaults by his followers on non-Marathi speakers. Uddhav Thackeray supported his cousin, saying it’s preferable to be a “goon” while fighting for Marathi pride.

</excerpt>

In a rare public moment, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray shared a stage in Mumbai after two decades. Their reunion at the “Victory Rally” in Worli reignited political debates across Maharashtra. While their supporters welcomed the move as historic, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance launched fierce attacks.

Shinde Slams Uddhav’s Intentions

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reacted sharply. He praised Raj’s concern for the Marathi language but criticized Uddhav’s tone. “Raj reflected genuine concern for the Marathi language. In contrast, Uddhav’s speech was filled with bitterness, jealousy, and a desperate craving for power and position,” he stated.

Moreover, Shinde said Uddhav missed the rally’s real purpose. “He raised no issue concerning the Marathi Manoos. Self-interest and the hunger for power were the only visible agendas.”

Allegations of Betrayal and Decline

Shinde accused Uddhav of betraying Marathi identity. He blamed the 2019 alliance with Congress and NCP for diluting Balasaheb Thackeray’s vision.

He questioned Uddhav’s leadership and the fall of Marathi representation in Mumbai. “The Shiv Sena under my leadership won 60 seats, while Uddhav’s party contested 100 and managed just 20,” he said.

Furthermore, Shinde accused Uddhav of insulting Prime Minister Modi during the event. “It is unfortunate that even the PM was targeted. That only exposes their hatred and desperation for power,” he added.

BJP Leaders Push Back

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale warned the MNS against using aggression. “Love for Marathi can be understood, but the feeling of opposing the Hindi language is not right,” he told ANI.

He called on Raj Thackeray to restrain his party workers. “Bullying can be answered with bullying. Beating someone is wrong.” He also claimed that the reunion could divide the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).

Meanwhile, State Minister Ashish Shelar dismissed the rally as a political stunt. “This was not a rally for the love of language but public appeasement of a brother once thrown out of the house,” he said.

According to him, the cousins reunited out of fear of BJP’s rising strength in civic polls. “They remembered their brotherhood due to the fear of BJP’s strength,” he added.

Fadnavis Responds with Sarcasm

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis responded to Raj’s remark that “What Balasaheb could not do, Devendra Fadnavis did it.”

He replied with sarcasm, “I express my gratitude to Raj Thackeray that he gave me the credit for the coming together of both the brothers; I must be getting the blessings of Balasaheb Thackeray.”

Fadnavis ridiculed the rally as a show of emotion rather than purpose. “I was told there would be a victory rally, but there was also a speech of ‘rudaali’. Not a single word was spoken about Marathi,” he said. He also slammed the Thackerays for mismanaging the BMC during their long control. “They did not do any work that could be shown,” he added.

Uddhav and Raj Vow to Stay United

During the rally, Uddhav declared a strong message of unity. “We have come together to stay together. We will together capture power in the Mumbai civic body and Maharashtra,” he announced.

The rally drew loud cheers from members of both Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS. Uddhav stressed that this fight was not just political. He said the battle was about “defending the Marathi language and identity” against the “imposition” of Hindi.

Raj opened his speech with a light dig, “Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has done what even Balasaheb Thackeray couldn’t, he brought us together.” He warned the BJP against dividing Mumbai from Maharashtra. He claimed the now-cancelled three-language policy was just the beginning.

Speculations About a New Alliance

The rally raised fresh speculation. Could the Thackeray cousins form a new alliance before the BMC polls? Uddhav’s Shiv Sena (UBT) has seen electoral setbacks. Raj’s MNS has been struggling to stay relevant. Both parties now seem to be looking for revival through unity. Saturday’s rally may signal a turning point both strategically and emotionally for the Thackeray cousins.

After 20 Years, Thackeray Cousins Reunite—But What Brought Them Together?

<excerpt>Uddhav and Raj Thackeray appeared on the same stage after two decades, joining forces to oppose the Hindi language policy and assert Marathi identity ahead of Mumbai’s civic elections.
</excerpt>

In a political turn of events, estranged political rivals and cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray came together on a public stage after 20 years, as they shared the same podium at a rally called ‘Awaj Marathicha’ (Voice of the Marathi) held in Mumbai on Wednesday. The rally, co-organized by Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), reflected a symbolic and strategic change in Maharashtra politics, particularly ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls.

The rally was on the heels of the Mahayuti government’s reversal of a contentious proposal to make Hindi the third language in primary schools in Maharashtra. Both Uddhav, 64, and Raj, 57, had been vehemently opposed to the policy. Their reunion is being colored as a political win for Marathi linguistic identity.

Raj Thackeray Slams BJP-Led Policy on Hindi

Raj Thackeray, with his controversial oratory skills, didn’t spare the state government and its language policy from criticism. “What Bal Thackeray couldn’t do, what many others couldn’t do, Devendra Fadnavis did — unite us,” Raj quipped, targeting the Deputy Chief Minister.

“You might have power in the Vidhan Bhawan, we have power on the roads.” He also asked about the origin of the three-language formula.

“Where did you learn this three-language formula? Only from the central government. Today, in the High Court and the Supreme Court, everything is English. It is not there in any other state. Why only in Maharashtra?” He then issued a warning

“Hindi is only a 200-year-old language. Try to put your hands on Mumbai or Maharashtra, and you will get to know. People must speak Marathi, no question about it.” “There will be no compromise on the Marathi language,” Raj Thackeray declared.

Uddhav Thackeray Offers Olive Branch

Following Raj’s strong speech, Uddhav Thackeray changed his tone to a lighter one, suggesting reconciliation. Then, after all these years, Raj and I hugged on a stage. The issue is, he addressed me as ‘respected Uddhav Thackeray’. So I too will say, ‘respected Raj Thackeray’,” he quipped.

Looking back at the past, Uddhav remembered how internal friction within the Shiv Sena resulted in Raj’s exit. Bal Thackeray appointed Uddhav as the party’s working president in January 2003—a decision officially made public by Raj himself. But feelings of resentment had been simmering over perceived favouritism in allotting tickets and the marginalization of supporters of Raj.

The two last shared the stage in 2005 when they campaigned for the Malvan Assembly by-election, just before Raj quit Shiv Sena to create MNS. At a later press conference, Raj remarked, “All I had asked for was respect. All I got was insult and humiliation.”

Marathi Unity Ahead of BMC Polls

And now, two decades on, the cousins seem to have put aside their differences in support of a common cultural and political movement. Their coming together is being interpreted as a tactical partnership before the all-important BMC polls.

“Everyone present here has made themselves forget the party divide for Marathi. One thing is certain: we have closed the distance between us. We have come together, we will remain together,” Uddhav announced.

He also flayed the BJP’s move towards uniform policies.

“Mumbai was our right, we fought and got it. We have to project the BJP’s ‘one nation, one election’ concept. Gradually, they want to make one of everything. Hindu and Hindustan, we agree, but we won’t let them have Hindi. We made Marathi compulsory; we had to do it.”

With cousins regaining a joint front, the rally gives a definite message: the battle for Marathi pride is back in the limelight of Maharashtra politics.

Uddhav and Raj Thackeray Unite After 20 Years to Oppose Hindi Imposition

<excerpt>Uddhav and Raj Thackeray unite after 20 years to protest the Hindi language decision in Maharashtra schools.
</excerpt>

Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, together for the first time in two decades, will come together against the language policy of the Maharashtra government. Their coming together is in reaction to the state making Hindi compulsory from Class 1 to Class 5 under the National Education Policy’s three-language formula.

The two leaders term it a clear thrust of Hindi upon Marathi identity and linguistic diversity. They have now planned a joint protest on July 5. This is a political moment that comes close to a display of unity from the estranged cousins.

From Separate Protests to a Single March

The two leaders had initially called for different protests. Raj Thackeray was organizing a ‘Virat Morcha’ on July 6 from Girgaon Chowpatty in South Mumbai. Uddhav Thackeray had supported an Azad Maidan protest on July 7 called by academic and activist Deepak Pawar.

The individual announcements had created confusion among the fans. But barely a few minutes after the press conferences, Raj Thackeray phoned Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut. He suggested staging one united march for the Marathi movement. Raut spoke to Uddhav Thackeray, who agreed forthwith. The leadership settled for July 5 as the date of the joint protest. The time and location will be disclosed in due course.

New Political Moment in Maharashtra

Sanjay Raut posted a photo of Uddhav and Raj together on X. His caption was, “There will be one united protest against the imposition of Hindi in Maharashtra schools. Jai Maharashtra!”

जय महाराष्ट्र!

“There will be a single and united march against compulsory Hindi in Maharashtra schools. Thackeray is the brand!”

— Sanjay Raut (@rautsanjay61) June 27, 2025

The MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande welcomed the decision. He appreciated Raj for initiating it and Uddhav for endorsing it without hesitation. Sandeep Deshpande stated that this march would demonstrate the power of one voice, united in Marathi. He even referred to it as a “2.0 version of the Sanyukta Maharashtra Movement.”

Government Faces Backlash, Revises Decision

The Maharashtra state government had initially issued the directive on April 16. It instructed schools to introduce Hindi compulsorily from Class 1 to 5 in Marathi- and English-medium schools. People viewed it as an assault on the rights of regional languages. Following protests, the government changed its order. The new resolution now makes Hindi voluntary. It also permits schools to teach another Indian language if a minimum of 20 students express a desire for it.

The message on July 5 will be loud and clear. Both Uddhav and Raj would like to demonstrate that Marathi identity cannot be diluted. Their consolidation might determine not only the course of language policy but also Maharashtra’s politics.

The Maharashtra government’s language consultation committee unanimously rejected the state’s decision to make Hindi compulsory from Class 1 on Sunday. The committee’s chairperson, Laxmikant Deshmukh, wrote a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and urged him to roll back the decision.

State Adds Hindi as Third Language Under NEP

Earlier, on April 17, the state government had announced that Hindi would become a compulsory third language in all state board schools. This decision came as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) implementation.

Rahul Ashok Rekhawar, Director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), stated that the School Education Department had made this decision on April 16. He said the policy aimed to benefit students’ growth and overall development. According to Rekhawar, “On behalf of the Maharashtra Government, the School Education Department has taken a decision in which teaching Hindi language along with Marathi and English has been made compulsory from class 1 in all the schools of the state board. This decision has been made with all the appointments and their development in view, and the students will definitely benefit from it.”

Fadnavis Responds to Criticism

After the announcement faced opposition, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended the move. He emphasized that learning Marathi remained mandatory and added that there should be no issue with students learning Hindi as an additional language. He expressed surprise at those who opposed Hindi but encouraged English. He remarked, “Marathi language is compulsory in Maharashtra; everyone should learn it. Additionally, if you wish to learn other languages, you can do so. Opposition to Hindi and promotion of English is surprising. If someone opposes Marathi, then it will not be tolerated.”

Opposition Leaders Voice Strong Objections

Meanwhile, leaders from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance criticized the ruling Mahayuti government’s decision. Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) MP Supriya Sule raised concerns about the government’s priorities. She pointed out that the state should first address its basic education infrastructure before making such language-related decisions. She stated, “I was first to oppose the education minister’s statement about making the CBSE board compulsory in Maharashtra. What is the need to replace the existing state board with CBSE? Before discussing the language issue, we must talk about the basic education infrastructure in the state.”

Uddhav Thackeray Warns Against Imposition

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray also criticized the decision. He said that people might cooperate if the government acted with respect, but forcing a language would face resistance. He questioned the need to impose Hindi on the state. He stated, “We will do everything if you ask (us) with affection, but if you impose anything, we will oppose it. Why this force for (learning) Hindi?”

Congress Condemns Forced Hindi Learning

Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar strongly opposed making Hindi compulsory. He urged the government not to impose a language and suggested keeping it optional. He demanded to know who was behind this decision. He told ANI, “You can keep it optional, but you cannot impose it. At whose behest are you trying to impose this language on the state?”

“We consider Marathi our mother tongue, and this third language that is being introduced should not be brought in. There should be no coercion against the rights of the Marathi people — this is our demand.”

“I expected such a bad failure of Uddhav Thackeray. We can identify who is a ‘devta (god)’ and who is a ‘daitya (monster)’ depending on if they respect women or work for their welfare,” Ranaut told reporters in Mumbai.

Her comments followed the BJP-led Mahayuti’s overwhelming win in Maharashtra. Ranaut recalled her previous confrontations with the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, especially when the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolished parts of her Bandra bungalow in 2020. “They demolished my home and verbally abused me,” she alleged, adding that such actions have consequences.

The Bombay High Court later ruled that the BMC’s demolition was “malafide” and directed that she be compensated.

Ranaut also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership after the Mahayuti’s triumph, calling him ‘invincible’ and a leader destined for the country’s “salvation.” She emphasized the lesson the election results taught those “talking about breaking the country.”

“During campaigning, I saw every child chanting ‘Modi-Modi’. Prime Minister Modi is the tallest leader in the world. The BJP is a brand, and today, the people of India believe in the brand,” Ranaut added.

The Mahayuti alliance secured 233 out of 288 seats in Maharashtra, a decisive win that left the opposition MVA with just 49 seats.

Uddhav Thackeray, the son of the late Balasaheb Thackeray, is facing a political crisis that threatens to undermine his legacy. Not only has he lost the Shiv Sena name, but he has also seen the iconic bow-and-arrow symbol claimed by Eknath Shinde, a former ally who has now become a powerful rival. Shinde has also taken over the chief minister’s position, a move that has added to Uddhav’s woes.

The Price of Ambition

Looking back, Uddhav’s ambition to secure the position of chief minister seems to have cost him dearly. In the recent elections, Shiv Sena (UBT) won just 17 out of 85 contested seats, suffering significant losses in key areas. This poor performance has left Uddhav on a difficult and uncertain path, with little hope for recovery. The losses, especially in Mumbai—once a stronghold—highlight the growing disconnect between the Thackeray name and its traditional support base.

Election Results: A Shocking Outcome

On Saturday, Uddhav Thackeray expressed his disbelief over the unexpected election results, calling them “completely unexpected and incomprehensible.” He compared the outcome to a “tsunami” rather than a wave, suggesting that the people may not fully agree with the results. “The question is whether the general public agrees with it or not,” he said, reflecting the confusion that surrounded the elections.

Questioning the Causes Behind the Defeat

Uddhav was perplexed about the reasons for the wave that led to his defeat. “Did all those people who attended our meetings vote for Mahayuti? Was it because soybeans are not getting good prices? Because industries in Maharashtra are moving out of the state? Because women are not safe?” he questioned, emphasizing that the anger behind the election results was unclear. Despite the losses, Uddhav urged his supporters to stay strong: “Do not be discouraged. This is the victory of EVM; it may be. If the people of Maharashtra do not accept the results, we will continue to fight with all our hearts.”

Rising Discontent and Inflation

Uddhav also touched upon the rising discontent, particularly over inflation. He questioned whether the “Ladki Bahin scheme” played a role in the results, noting that his rallies had drawn large crowds compared to the BJP’s schemes. He pointed out that many people were struggling with rising prices and asked, “Did they vote as a compliment to the increasing inflation?” Despite the overwhelming defeat, Uddhav remained resolute, promising to continue fighting for the rights of Maharashtra. “I cannot believe that Maharashtra, which listened to me as head of the family during Covid, would behave with me in this manner,” he said.

The COVID-19 Leadership Boost

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Uddhav Thackeray managed to connect with the people through social media platforms like Facebook Live. His approach portrayed him as a calm and approachable leader, which earned him widespread praise during those challenging times. However, despite his strong leadership during the pandemic, Uddhav seemed unaware of the growing unrest within his party. Many members were unhappy with his alliance with ideological rivals Congress and NCP, which eventually led to Eknath Shinde’s rebellion in June 2022. This rebellion resulted in the collapse of Uddhav’s government and a deep split within Shiv Sena.

A Continued Battle Against the BJP

Despite these setbacks, Uddhav Thackeray has remained unyielding. He has continued to criticize the BJP and its leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while attacking those he sees as traitors—party members who aligned themselves with Shinde.

</excerpt>

In Maharashtra’s Latur on Tuesday, election officials inspected Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s Chopper upon his arrival for a campaign event, marking a similar move to their inspection of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray’s belongings earlier in Yavatmal and again in Latur. Thackeray and his allies allege the repeated inspections of his bags signal unfair treatment by election authorities, raising concerns about partiality amid the ongoing Model Code of Conduct (MCC) enforcement.

Election Commission Enforces SOPs to Ensure Fair Campaigns

Videos from Latur captured election officials boarding Nitin Gadkari’s Chopper and inspecting bags inside, adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) intended to maintain a fair playing field and prevent illegal distribution of cash or gifts to voters. The Election Commission (EC) defended these measures, noting that they are standard during elections to ensure compliance with MCC guidelines, intended to curb any undue influence on voters.

Thackeray’s Frustration Grows After Repeated Inspections

Thackeray’s belongings were first inspected in Yavatmal on Monday and again the next day in Latur, where he was campaigning for Shiv Sena UBT candidate Dinkar Mane in the Ausa constituency. Thackeray expressed visible frustration during the second inspection, questioning officials about their motivations and asking for their names, postings, and appointment details. In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), he sarcastically referred to himself as the “first customer” for such checks.

Thackeray further questioned whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Home Minister Amit Shah faced similar scrutiny during their Maharashtra campaign rallies, insinuating a perceived bias against opposition leaders.

Political Reactions: Ruling Alliance and Opposition Clash

Leaders from the ruling Mahayuti alliance responded by questioning why Thackeray opposed the checks if there was no reason for concern, suggesting that the inspections should not be an issue if he had nothing to hide. However, leaders of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allege that the inspections are part of a strategy to intimidate and inconvenience opposition leaders ahead of the November 20 assembly polls.

Shiv Sena UBT leader Sanjay Raut expressed skepticism over the impartiality of election authorities, highlighting that while they respect the EC’s duties, the consistency of inspections should be ensured across parties. Raut alleged that significant funds were being moved by leaders in the ruling Mahayuti alliance and questioned if their belongings faced equal scrutiny.

He further challenged Thackeray to ask Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to speak positively about Veer Savarkar and to see if Congress leaders would honor Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray.

Shah Accuses MVA of ‘Appeasement Politics’

In his remarks, Shah criticized the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance—comprising Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)—for “appeasement politics” and claimed they disregarded the people’s mandate in the 2019 elections to gain power. Shah appealed to voters to support the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance for the third consecutive time, arguing that MVA’s power-sharing arrangement was driven by “greed” and would not endure.

BJP’s Sankalp Patra Promises 25 Guarantees

Shah launched BJP’s manifesto, offering 25 guarantees aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for Maharashtra. He was accompanied by senior BJP leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who highlighted the manifesto’s focus on realizing PM Modi’s vision for the state.

With the Maharashtra assembly elections scheduled for November 20 and vote counting on November 23, the Mahayuti alliance—consisting of BJP, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP—will face a strong challenge from the opposition MVA coalition as both sides vie for control of Maharashtra’s 288 constituencies.

The remark came as Shaina, who has a background as a fashion designer, recently switched from BJP to contest the Mumbadevi seat against the Congress MLA Amin Patel.

Sawant remarked, “Look at her condition. She was in the BJP all her life and now she has gone to another party. Imported ‘maal’ does not work here, only original ‘maal’ works here…and we have that.”

Shaina NC, a strong advocate for women’s representation in politics, fired back at Sawant, saying, “This is the same Arvind Sawant for whom we had campaigned in 2014 and 2019. Look at his thinking when he calls a woman ‘maal’ (item). I would like to tell him that this same voter will make him ‘behaal’ in the elections.”

Sawant, addressing the uproar, attempted to clarify his stance, claiming, “Shaina NC wants to set a narrative right now. You must show the full quote of what I said. She is not residing in that assembly. Never in the political life of 55 years… modesty of a woman is always honoured by me,” underlining his long-standing respect for women.

“You cannot respect a woman. You use such words for a capable woman who is in politics. Now you will be ‘behaal’ because you called the woman ‘maal’. Whether I take action or not, the public will make him ‘behaal'”, she said.

Shaina NC further stated that I think this objectification of women is not only their mentality but Congress MLA Amin Patel was present there laughing.

“On one side there is Eknath Shinde’s Ladki Behan Yojana, on the other side there is Prime Minister’s Ujjwala, Mudra Banking, Housing Scheme, where women are empowered. Droupadi Murmu, a tribal woman, becomes the President and on the other side Mahavinash Aghadi’s Arvind Sawant calls me ‘Imported maal'”, she added.

The Shiv Sena leader further went on saying that I think this objectification of women is not only their mentality but Congress MLA Amin Patel was present there laughing.

“I think this objectification of women is not only their mentality but Congress MLA Amin Patel was present there laughing. You will have to apologize at the Nagpada Police Station. Mahavinash Aghadi which is going to be ‘behaal’ on 20th November,” she said.

On Monday, Shiv Sena released the list of 15 candidates for the assembly polls, in which Shaina NC was fielded from Mumbadevi constituency.

Shaina will be contesting against incumbent Congress’ MLA Amin Patel who also filed his nomination on Tuesday.

The Maharashtra Assembly elections are scheduled for November 20, with counting for all 288 constituencies set for November 23. In the 2019 assembly elections, the BJP won 105 seats, the Shiv Sena 56, and the Congress 44. In 2014, the BJP secured 122 seats, the Shiv Sena 63, and the Congress 42.

Also read: Delhi Deploys 200 ‘Anti-Smog Guns’ to Combat Post-Diwali Pollution

The controversy has led to protests by the Shiv Sena women’s wing, who gathered at Nagpada police station to demand an FIR against Sawant. This incident highlights the escalating tensions in Maharashtra’s multi-party political landscape as rivalries and alliances evolve, with the Shiv Sena, NCP, BJP, and Congress all seeking to establish dominance in the lead-up to the Assembly elections.

Zeeshan Siddique, the son of the late NCP leader Baba Siddique, will represent the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the upcoming Maharashtra elections in November. Siddique, who previously served as a member of the Congress party, switched allegiance to Ajit Pawar’s NCP shortly after his father’s murder in Mumbai.

In the Maharashtra polls, Zeeshan Siddique will face off against Varun Sardesia, the Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate and nephew of former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, for the Bandra East assembly seat.

Siddique’s exit from the Congress party came after he was expelled for what they called “anti-party activities.” Allegations suggested that he voted against the party in the Maharashtra legislative council elections, which Siddique has denied.

Expressing his gratitude after joining the NCP, Zeeshan remarked, “It is an emotional day for me and my family. I am thankful to Ajit Pawar, Praful Patel, and Sunil Tatkare for believing in me in these tough times. I have got the nomination from Bandra East, and I am sure that with the love and support of all the people, I will definitely win Bandra East yet again.”

Zeeshan Siddique’s Financial Background

According to the MyNeta portal, Zeeshan Siddique has declared a net worth of ₹9 crore. His 2019 election affidavit reveals that he possesses movable assets worth ₹1.74 crore, which include shares, bank deposits, and approximately ₹4 lakh in cash.

Most of his immovable assets consist of property and residential buildings, totaling ₹7.24 crore. However, he also has liabilities amounting to ₹76 lakh. These figures are based on his 2019 affidavit and are likely to have changed since then.

Tragic Events Surrounding Siddique’s Candidacy

Zeeshan Siddique’s father, Baba Siddique, was tragically shot dead on October 12 outside his son’s office in Bandra East and later died at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital. Following the murder, gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang claimed responsibility for the attack.

Police investigations revealed that Zeeshan himself was also targeted by the shooters, who are believed to have ties to a jailed gangster. During questioning, those in custody indicated that they killed Baba Siddique because he was “not a good man” and had close connections with the notorious don Dawood Ibrahim.

Reports suggest that Thackeray began feeling uneasy following his speech at the Dussehra rally in Mumbai on October 12, where he criticized the ruling Mahayuti government and the central authorities.

In 2016, he was released from Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai after undergoing an angiography. This procedure was part of his follow-up treatment after an angioplasty performed on July 20, 2012, during which doctors placed eight stents to alleviate constrictions caused by multiple blockages in three major heart arteries.

Thackeray had a second angioplasty in November 2012 to address blockages in the left anterior descending artery (LAD), which was reported to be nearly 60% blocked.

</excerpt>

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has called for a Maharashtra bandh on Saturday to protest the recent Badlapur incident, which involved atrocities against women. Thackeray clarified that the bandh, scheduled to last until 2 PM, is focused on ensuring women’s safety and is not politically motivated.

In a statement, the former Chief Minister emphasized the growing concerns regarding the safety of girls in schools. “Many people now feel that girls are not safe in schools. This bandh is for everyone, not just for the Mahavikas Aghadi. Bus and train services should also be halted during the bandh. Regardless of religion or caste, everyone should support this cause for the protection of our daughters and sisters,” Thackeray urged.

Criticizing the Maharashtra government, Thackeray questioned its handling of the situation. “What is happening to our girls? What is the government doing? We are not against welfare schemes like the Ladli Behan Yojana, but the priority should be women’s safety. We will not resort to unlawful actions, but shopkeepers should also support the bandh by closing their shops in solidarity,” he stated.

Thackeray expressed disappointment over the authorities’ inaction and emphasized the importance of holding the government accountable. “Had the police acted appropriately, we wouldn’t need to stage this protest. Even the court has reprimanded the authorities. People have the right to question the government, and when they are left with no options, the judiciary is their only recourse,” he said.

Earlier, in a post on X, Thackeray announced, “The Maha Vikas Aghadi has called for a Maharashtra bandh on August 24 to protest against the Badlapur incident. This bandh is not political but a stand against the ongoing perversity.”

Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Badlapur sexual assault case involving minors has filed an FIR against the school authorities for failing to report the incident to the police, as required under Section 19 of the POCSO Act. The Act mandates that any authority aware of such offenses must immediately inform law enforcement for further action, the SIT stated.

</excerpt>

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has alleged that the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, led by Uddhav Thackeray, had planned to arrest BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis in a bid to weaken the party. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Shinde claimed that when he objected to the plan, he too became a target.

Shinde revealed that the plot was part of a larger strategy to put the BJP on the backfoot and potentially force its MLAs to join the MVA. “They had everything planned. I objected when they discussed arresting Fadnavis, which I felt was wrong. They justified it by saying Fadnavis had caused them trouble, so they needed to retaliate,” Shinde said. He further mentioned that after he raised concerns, the government allegedly plotted to implicate him in an urban land selling case.

During the interview, Shinde also accused the then Home Minister, Anil Deshmukh, of denying him Z-plus security despite threats from Naxalites in Gadchiroli. Shinde claimed that, even though intelligence and police forces recommended the security upgrade, Deshmukh refused to approve it. “Officials offered me off-the-record Z-plus security, but I declined, saying I wasn’t afraid,” he added.

Reflecting on the challenges he faced while serving as Minister for Urban Development during the MVA regime, Shinde pointed out that Uddhav Thackeray’s family members began interfering in his office’s work. “Thackeray was the Chief Minister and had the right to intervene, but when his family members started meddling, it crossed a line. When I raised the issue, instead of addressing it, Thackeray’s behavior towards me changed,” Shinde said.

In response to comparisons between him and Uddhav Thackeray, Shinde stated that governance requires direct engagement with the public. “Government doesn’t run from home or through social media. It requires face-to-face communication, understanding the people’s problems, and visiting them during crises,” he remarked.

Shinde also addressed speculation about the stability of his government, asserting that despite predictions from the opposition, his administration remains strong and has achieved significant progress. “Since our government took over, we’ve been criticized constantly, with claims that we’ll collapse. Yet, we’ve completed major projects like Samruddhi Mahamarg and Atal Setu in just two years,” Shinde said.

Regarding the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Shinde argued that the core Shiv Sena voter base has shifted away from the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (UBT) faction. He claimed that the votes received by the UBT were largely from minority communities traditionally aligned with the Congress, describing this support as temporary.

In the last Lok Sabha elections, the INDIA bloc (comprising Congress, Shiv Sena-UBT, and NCP) secured 30 of Maharashtra’s 48 seats. However, Shinde remained confident that the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance’s vote share and strike rate would remain competitive in the future.

</excerpt>

Uddhav Thackeray, the leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, is facing a challenging political situation due to his efforts to balance between Hindu and Muslim voters. His strategy of appealing to both communities appears to be backfiring. The approach to woo two prominent voted banks simultaneously might come with a cost. The vote banks Critics argue that his approach is alienating his traditional Hindu voter base while failing to fully win over Muslim voters. Congress leader Nana Patole has even claimed that the UBT’s success in securing nine seats in the Lok Sabha was largely due to Muslim support, implying that their Hindu votes were lost.
Thackeray’s political opponents, including the Shinde faction of Shiv Sena, are capitalizing on this situation. After Thackeray’s recent visit to Delhi, where he sought support from Congress, he faced criticism for not achieving his goals. Congress reportedly did not offer him assurances on a Chief Ministerial position or additional seats, which worsened his predicament.

In Maharashtra, some Muslim groups have protested outside Thackeray’s residence, accusing him of not supporting Muslim interests effectively. Additionally, Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Nirupam has used the issue of UBT MPs’ absence during the presentation of the Waqf Board Bill to accuse Thackeray of siding with Muslims, further intensifying the criticism.
Thackeray’s attempt to navigate this complex political landscape, balancing Hindu and Muslim interests has left him in a difficult spot. He cannot fully support either side without alienating the other, and his inability to take a clear stance on contentious issues like the Waqf Board Bill has exacerbated the problem.

Uddhav Thackeray was accompanied by his son and party MLA Aaditya Thackeray and party leader Sanjay Raut during the visit. AAP MPs Sanjay Singh and Raghav Chadha were also present.

Speaking about the meeting, MP Sanjay Singh said that the former Maharashtra CM extended his support to Sunita Kejriwal and the Delhi CM’s parents.

“Former Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray along with his son Aaditya Thackeray, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut came to meet Sunita Kejriwal and Arvind Kejriwal’s parents. In Arvind Kejriwal’s case, for the first time in the history of the Indian judiciary, his release was stopped without a copy of the order. A new CBI case was made and he was forcibly kept in jail. So all these points were discussed,” he said.

“Through ED-CBI they (Govt) want to suppress our voice. But we will all fight this government together. Everyone is standing with each other in this. Uddhav ji gave this assurance to Sunita Kejriwal and her family,” Singh added.

The Delhi High Court on Monday dismissed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case concerning the Excise Policy matter. Delhi High Court stated that it cannot be said that the arrest of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal was without justifiable reason. In the case, the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has requested a short adjournment to address its plea for the cancellation of bail granted to CM Kejriwal.

The Delhi High Court has questioned the ED on whether cancelling Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s bail would lead to his re-arrest. The court’s inquiry aims to clarify the implications of the ED’s plea for bail cancellation. The court adjourned the matter for September 5, 2024.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief met with Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge and the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in Delhi in the run-up to assembly elections in Maharashtra. Party leader Sanjay Raut and Aaditya Thackeray were also present.

Thackeray is on a three-day visit to the national capital meeting with major opposition leaders bracing up for the upcoming state assembly polls likely to be held later this year.

The state is likely to poll for the 288-member legislative assembly later this year, as the tenure of the current government ends in 2024. However, the Election Commission has yet to announce the dates.

In the recent Lok Sabha elections 2024, the ruling BJP dipped to a mere nine seats in Maharashtra against 23 in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. The vote share stood at 26.18 per cent. The Congress, on the other hand, marginally improved its seat share by securing 13 seats in the state. The Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won seven and one seats respectively, taking the total tally of the Maha Yuti alliance to 17. The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) got nine seats while the Nationalist Congress Party – Sharadchandra Pawar won eight seats.

</excerpt>

BJP leader Shaina NC fiercely responded to Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray’s ‘power jihad’ comment, labeling it as a ‘childish’ remark. Reacting to the statement, Shaina NC said, “What a childish statement this is. In a democracy, it is the voter that decides victory and defeat and let’s not forget that Uddhav Thackeray should be reminded of how his MPs got elected in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name.”

The BJP leader also accused Thackeray of attempting to ‘backstab’ the BJP while in power, despite having secured votes under Prime Minister Modi’s name through a conspiracy. “When he was the chief minister, he chose to backstab the BJP despite getting the votes on PM Modi’s name by hatching a conspiracy and then saying that he would put Devendra Fadnavis in jail. Did Devendra Fadnavis go to jail? Absolutely not. Because it is the people’s blessings that these kind of statements do not succeed,” she said.

She further targeted Thackeray and said, “Also, understand when you have Pakistani flags that are seen at Thackeray’s meetings in Nashik and Mumbai, it shows what their ideology is. Balasaheb Thackeray would have never gone with the Congress for power.” Shaina NC also stated that the people of the state will support Prime Minister Modi and Devendra Fadnavis, ensuring that the BJP will return to power.

“So when you accuse certain people or get into polarising different castes and religions for a community that has lived harmoniously, let me please tell you that they will vote for the prime minister and Devendra Fadnavis in the state. BJP will come back to power. It is the Mahayuti that has given stability and security to all citizens without getting into this kind of divisive vote bank politics,” said the BJP leader. This reaction followed Home Minister Amit Shah’s earlier remarks at a BJP conclave.

On July 21, during a BJP conclave in Pune, Maharashtra, Amit Shah referred to the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance as an “Aurangzeb fan club” and accused Thackeray of leading it. On August 3, former chief minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray criticised Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, asserting that the political contest in Mumbai would determine whether he or the BJP remains in power. Thackeray made these remarks while addressing party workers in Pune, with Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut present.

Thackeray said, “Now the battle is in the field, I said in Mumbai ‘either I stay or you stay’. Here is a poster. In the photo, a Kalingad (Uddhav Thackeray calls Devendra Fadnavis watermelon) is placed at my feet. Some thought I challenged him (Devendra Fadnavis). But, you don’t challenge the clods, you have to crush them with your finger. You are not big enough for me to challenge.”

The state is expected to hold elections for its 288-member Legislative Assembly later this year, as the current government’s term concludes in 2024. However, the Election Commission has not yet set the election dates.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP’s seat count in Maharashtra fell to 9 from 23, with a vote share of 26.18%. Meanwhile, the Congress saw a slight increase in its seat count, securing 13 seats in the state.

Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) secured seven and one seats, respectively, bringing the NDA’s total to 17 seats. Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) won nine seats, while the Nationalist Congress Party – Sharadchandra Pawar obtained eight seats.

</excerpt>

In response to Union Minister Amit Shah’s remarks labeling him as the head of the “Aurangzeb Fan Club,” Uddhav Thackeray called Shah a “political heir” of Ahmad Shah Abdali, the Afghan ruler who defeated the Marathas in the Battle of Panipat. Shah had previously attacked Thackeray during a visit to Pune on July 21, referring to him as the “leader of the Aurangzeb Fan Club.”

Allegations Against the BJP

Uddhav Thackeray accused the BJP, a former ally, of orchestrating splits within political parties, particularly the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). He referred to a letter from former Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Balasaheb Deoras to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which emphasized no hatred towards Muslims or non-Hindus and upheld secularism as a valued Hindu trait. Thackeray questioned whether this form of Hindutva was unacceptable to Shah.

Criticism of BJP Policies

Thackeray claimed that the people of Maharashtra delivered a strong message to Shah during the recent Lok Sabha elections, noting that Shah returned to his leaders to assess the political damage after campaigning and facing voter backlash. He told his party workers in Pune that, according to the BJP, aligning with Muslims after explaining their version of Hindutva equates to being part of the “Aurangzeb Fan Club” and accused the saffron party of engaging in “power jihad.”

Accusations of Voter Bribery

Thackeray criticized the Eknath Shinde government’s “Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin” scheme, describing it as an attempt to bribe voters with freebies. He also mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demand for accountability from the Congress for its 70-year governance, highlighting structural issues within a year of the new parliament building’s construction. Thackeray urged Modi to address the mismanagement of his government.

Vision for Pune’s Development

Expressing his desire to win the assembly election for Pune’s development, Thackeray promised to build roads that would last for 200 years if given the opportunity to lead the state again.

BJP Leaders Respond

BJP leader and deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis criticized Thackeray, calling him “disappointed and frustrated” and suggesting that the Sena leader’s remarks were evidence of his unstable state of mind and affiliation with the “Aurangzeb Fan Club.”

Commenting on Thackeray’s statements, Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan said, “I think Uddhav Thackeray has lost his mental balance. He had earlier made wrong comments on PM Modi, Maharashtra deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis. Today, he made wrong comments about the home minister of India Amit Shah… Elections are very far, I don’t know till then what kind of language he will use.”

</excerpt>

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of engaging in “power jihad” by allegedly breaking political parties to remain in government. Thackeray’s remarks came during an address to party workers in Pune on Saturday, as reported by PTI.

Thackeray also criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah for labeling him the head of the “Aurangzeb Fan Club.” He accused Shah of being the “political descendent” of Ahmad Shah Abdali, the Afghan ruler who defeated the Marathas in the Battle of Panipat.

Thackeray further criticized the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government over its ‘Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin’ scheme, accusing it of bribing voters with “revdis” (freebies). He stated, “If Muslims are with us after we explain to them our Hindutva, then we are (according to the BJP) the Aurangzeb Fan Club. Then what you are doing is power jihad,” according to PTI.

On July 21, during a BJP conclave in Maharashtra’s Pune, Amit Shah had called the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance an “Aurangzeb fan club,” alleging that Thackeray was its leader. Shah stated, “Maha Vikas Aghadi is Aurangzeb fan club. This Aurangzeb fan club cannot ensure India’s security. Uddhav Thackeray is the leader of this Aurangzeb Fan Club. This Fan Club cannot make Maharashtra and India safe. It’s only the BJP that can ensure the safety and security of all,” according to ANI.

Shah further alleged that “Uddhav Thackeray shares his meals with people involved with Kasab, he supports PFI and stands against renaming Aurangabad as Sambhaji Nagar.”

This exchange marks another instance of Shah publicly criticizing Thackeray, accusing him of abandoning ideology for power during the Lok Sabha elections.

Uddhav Thackeray was forced to resign as chief minister in June 2022 after Eknath Shinde led a rebellion in the Shiv Sena, resulting in the collapse of his government. In February 2023, the Election Commission of India recognized the Shinde faction as the real Shiv Sena.

Elections for the 288-seat Maharashtra Assembly are expected to take place later this year.

</excerpt>

Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray announced on Saturday that if his party comes to power after the Maharashtra assembly election, his government will scrap the tender for the Dharavi slum redevelopment project in Mumbai.

Opposing the sops being provided for the Dharavi redevelopment project, Uddhav Thackeray vowed during a news conference, “We won’t let it happen.”

“Is it Dharavi redevelopment or ‘Ladka Mitra Yojna’,“We will not give additional sops and if required, call for a fresh tender after coming to power.” ” Uddhav Thackeray stated.

The multi-crore Dharavi slum redevelopment initiative does not entail land transfers to the Adani Group, but rather to several Maharashtra government departments. The Ahmedabad-based firm would build dwellings and pass them over to these agencies for distribution to people of Asia’s largest slum.

Speaking in the Maharashtra legislature over the revenue department’s budgetary requests, senior Congress politician Prithviraj Chavan recently alleged that the Dharavi slum redevelopment project is a “big scam” and urged the Maharashtra government to issue a white paper on it.

Revenue Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil promised to release a white paper on the Dharavi project. He stated that the white paper will provide specifics about the tender procedure.

</excerpt>

Maharashtra politics is now slowly moving towards a change. The effect of this change is visible in both Mahavikas Aghadi and NDA. Uddhav Thackeray, the main constituent of Mahavikas Aghadi, has started playing the politics of pressure directly. He has made it clear to Congress and NCP that he will contest the elections again on the same number of seats on which he contested in 2019.

If this does not happen then he will field his candidates on all 288 seats. Thackeray’s Shiv Sena has also started preparations to contest elections on all seats. Thackeray has already given instructions to his allies two-three times. Actually, Thackeray’s Shiv Sena is upset with the results of the Lok Sabha elections because they got less seats than they expected.
Thackeray’s UBT contested on 22 seats but won only on 9. Congress was the biggest gainer. It contested on 17 seats and won on 13. NCP Pawar contested on 9 and won on 7.

This is where the problem started. After winning more seats, Congress wants to be seen as the big brother. Two-three rounds of meetings have been held regarding seat sharing. Congress itself claims that it contested on 155 seats in 2019, so this time too it would like to contest on a maximum of 125 to 130 seats. In this way, the remaining seats out of 288 will be divided between Pawar and Thackeray’s party. In a way, the calculation is being made for 85 and 70. Thackeray is not ready for this at all. Thackeray’s party decided that it wanted the same number of seats as it contested on 124 seats in the 2019 assembly elections. This means that Congress will have to come second. It does not seem that Congress will agree to this easily. If sources are to be believed, a formula has also emerged that all three parties will contest on equal number of seats. In a way, every party will contest on 90 to 92 seats.

The fight is not only about seats but also about who will be the face. Sharad Pawar has said twice that he also wants to become CM once again. Thackeray’s party is worried that what will happen if after the elections NCP and Congress come together and make Sharad Pawar the CM. Pawar has met twice with his nephew Ajit Pawar who has joined NDA. If experts are to be believed, Pawar can bring him back with him. If Ajit Pawar comes back, NCP will become stronger. Thackeray is doing politics of pressure so that he can be projected as the Chief Minister before the elections. Congress and Pawar’s NCP do not seem to be in this mood right now. The Lok Sabha election results have boosted the morale of all three parties, it remains to be seen who will bow down. In such a situation, the politics of Maharashtra is going to be interesting in the coming days.

</excerpt>

The Lok Sabha result outcome has changed the picture this time. Many new equations were seen before and after the elections. Given the current political situation across the country, predicting the direction of Maharashtra politics until the elections is increasingly challenging. Both the All India Alliance and the NDA face potential fractures. If both alliances break apart, the BJP is likely to benefit.

Following the Lok Sabha elections, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena might separate from the Mahavikas Aaghadi alliance. Whether Thackeray will align with the BJP or contest independently remains uncertain. Nevertheless, he is gearing up to contest all 288 seats.

For the BJP, Thackeray’s separation from Congress, in any form, is seen as advantageous.
Experts note that during the Lok Sabha elections, Uddhav Thackeray’s UBT had conflicts with Congress over seat allocations. Despite these conflicts, seat distribution was managed, but UBT incurred losses while Congress and Sharad Pawar’s party gained. UBT managed to win only 9 out of 21 seats.

While Congress won 13 out of 17. Whereas last time Congress had only one seat. Pawar’s NCP was successful in 8 out of 10. UBT suffered the biggest loss. It came down from 19 to 9. If seat sharing happens in the assembly according to the results of Lok Sabha, then UBT will be in the biggest loss. Congress will claim to contest the maximum number of seats and will also demand the post of CM. UBT feels that it did not gain much from the alliance while Congress and Pawar’s party benefited from it. Sharad Pawar has said that smaller parties should join the Congress. Thackeray’s Shiv Sena also fears that if Pawar’s NCP merges with the Congress, it will become weak. Experts also believe that if Pawar’s party merges with the Congress and Sharad Pawar is made the CM face, Uddhav Thackeray will be weakened. Sharad Pawar has also given a statement in Pune on Thursday that he is trying to take charge of Maharashtra. The meaning being drawn from this statement of Pawar is that he wants to become the CM of Maharashtra once again.

This is possible only if Congress supports him. Congress will also agree to Pawar’s name. On the other hand, Uddhav Thackeray is trying to become the CM again. UBT spokesperson Sanjay Raut today again staked claim to the CM’s chair and said that his leader Uddhav Thackeray will be the next CM of Maharashtra. This is being considered a direct message to Congress. UBT feels that they are being weakened. In this situation, Thackeray can separate from the Congress alliance. If Thackeray separates, BJP will try its best to bring him together. The current situation of BJP is such that it will accept all the conditions of Thackeray.

Along with giving Thackeray the CM post, BJP can also give him a higher share of seats. Leaders like Devendra Fadnavis can be brought to Delhi. BJP is also not seeing any benefit from Ajit Pawar’s NCP. As far as CM Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena is concerned, it will also accept Thackeray.

The BJP has not yet revealed its full strategy. The political landscape in Maharashtra is expected to become clearer after the election of the national president later this month. Indications suggest that the new president might be from Maharashtra, with significant influence from the Sangh.

If the Sangh intervenes, it could facilitate a resolution between Thackeray and the BJP.
The BJP stands to benefit if Thackeray’s Shiv Sena contests the elections independently, which could potentially lead to a split in the NCP, currently part of the NDA. Meanwhile, MNS leader Raj Thackeray has surprised the BJP by announcing that his party will contest the elections alone. Consequently, significant political upheaval is anticipated in Maharashtra in the coming days.

Speaking about the meeting, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said, “Today, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and party leader Derek O’Brien met with Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray. There was a long talk. Many leaders talked to Uddhav Thackeray on the phone today. Narendra Modi and the BJP are not having the majority. They are still trying to make the government. We believe that it will not be a good government.”

While the Trinamool Congress has won 29 out of 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) has won 9 seats in Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra battle witnessed a tight contest in many seats, with the BJP facing unexpected losses, winning only 17 seats despite expecting over 45, and Congress experiencing a remarkable renaissance to emerge as the single-largest party in the state, leading on 13 constituencies.

Both Shiv Sena (UBT) and TMC are part of the INDIA bloc.

According to the Election Commission of India, the BJP won 240 seats, significantly lower than its 2019 tally of 303. The Congress, on the other hand, showed strong improvement, winning 99 seats. While the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured 292 seats, the INDIA bloc surpassed the 230 mark, posing stiff competition and defying all predictions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi secured a third term, but the BJP needed the support of other parties in his coalition, primarily JD (U) chief Nitish Kumar and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu.

Meanwhile, NDA leaders unanimously passed a resolution in the meeting, electing Narendra Modi as their leader.

Thackeray and Pawar Factions Outperform Breakaway Groups

As of 2 pm, Team Thackeray is leading on 11 Maharashtra seats, while Mr Pawar’s NCP is ahead on 7 seats. In contrast, their breakaway factions, led by Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP, are leading on 5 and 1 seats, respectively.

INDIA Alliance Leads in 29 Seats, BJP on 18

Overall, the INDIA alliance is ahead in 29 seats, while the BJP is leading in 18 seats. This marks a significant dent in the NDA’s performance in the state compared to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Maharashtra’s Political Landscape Changed Dramatically

The political landscape in Maharashtra has undergone significant changes since the 2019 polls. The BJP and Shiv Sena were in an alliance then, winning 41 out of 48 seats. The NCP won four seats, and the Congress one. However, the alliance fell apart over the Chief Minister’s post, leading to the formation of a new government with the BJP and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena.

Thackeray and Pawar’s Fights Pay Off

The fights of both leaders, Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar, have paid off in the polls. Mr Thackeray’s alliance with the NCP and Congress has given him a strong foothold in the state, while Mr Pawar’s battle to maintain his party’s identity has also been successful.

Trends Indicate Boost for Maha Vikas Aghadi

The trends so far indicate a significant boost for the Maha Vikas Aghadi, which will be crucial for the state polls later this year. The alliance’s performance will give it a strong morale boost as it prepares for the upcoming elections.

Sharad Pawar Addresses Media

Addressing the media, Mr Pawar said that this election represents change in the country and Maharashtra has played a big role. “I am proud of the people of Maharashtra,” he said, adding that the INDIA alliance leaders will hold a meeting tomorrow to discuss their next steps.

</excerpt>

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde criticized his former party colleague Uddhav Thackeray, stating that although he occupies the state’s highest office, he still fulfills the responsibilities of a party worker because in his faction of the Shiv Sena, there is no hierarchy of boss and servant.

“I am a CM, but I work as a worker even now. There is no boss or any servant in our party. We are all working in cooperation with each other,” Shinde stated during a public meeting in Nagpur on Sunday.

Criticizing Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray for promoting dynastic politics by supporting his son Aditya Thackeray, Shinde remarked, “(In our party) the king’s son will not become the king. Only the one who works will become the king. Balasaheb Thackeray considered his colleagues as friends, but he (Uddhav) considered us as domestic servants.” Shinde further stated, “A party or the state can never be run sitting at home”.

Earlier, the Maharashtra CM criticized Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), saying that the opposition is “Teen Tigada Kaam Bigada,” and asserted that the Mahayuti alliance comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP is going to win all seats in Vidarbha.”

“Mahayuti (the BJP, Shiv Sena, NCP alliance) is getting a good response in Vidarbha. There is such an atmosphere that the Mahayuti will win all the Lok Sabha seats in Vidarbha. In two to three days, the Mahayuti will decide on the remaining seats. The Maha Vikas Aghadi is ‘Teen Tigada Kaam Bigada’. They have no agenda,” CM Shinde stated.

The Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra are scheduled to take place in five phases: April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, and May 20. The vote counting is set for June 4. With its 48 Lok Sabha seats, the state stands as the second-largest contributor to the lower house of Parliament, following Uttar Pradesh. Maharashtra, recognized for its political diversity and substantial electoral sway, is pivotal in shaping the national political landscape.

In the 2019 elections, the BJP became the largest party with 23 seats, while the undivided Shiv Sena secured 18 seats.

Raut mentioned that the Uddhav Thackeray-led party intends to compete for a total of 22 seats in the upcoming general elections, with the announcement of the remaining five candidates expected within the next day or two. Additionally, Raut noted that farmers’ leader Raju Shetti has sought the support of the Maha Vikas Aghadi in Hatkanangale.

Out of the names disclosed on Wednesday, 11 had previously been revealed by party chief Uddhav Thackeray during his visits to the respective Lok Sabha constituencies last month.

The party has also reaffirmed the candidacy of all five incumbent MPs. Arvind Sawant, the sitting MP, will stand for election from the Mumbai South constituency, Sanjay Patil from Mumbai North East, and Amol Kirtikar from Mumbai North West. Rajan Vichare will contest from Thane, while Vinayak Raut has been nominated for Ratnagiri Sindhudurg. Additionally, sitting MPs Sanjay Jadhav (Parbhani) and Omraje Nimbalkar (Osmanabad) have been renominated.

Shiv Sena will also be vying for the Aurangabad seat, with former MP Chandrakant Khaire being fielded.

Notably, wrestler Chandrahar Patil has been nominated for Sangli, a seat that the Congress, a member of the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition, had been pushing for.

While the Congress has announced its candidates for some seats where there is no conflict with its alliance partners, the official declaration of candidates by another MVA constituent, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar), is still pending for the Lok Sabha polls in April-May.

Maharashtra, with its 48 Lok Sabha seats, the second highest after Uttar Pradesh (80), is scheduled to vote in five phases starting from April 19.

The suspense over the candidate for the Kalyan Lok Sabha constituency, currently represented by MP Shrikant Shinde, persists. The party’s decision to nominate former MP Chandrakant Khaire has drawn attention to Ambadas Danve, the leader of Opposition in the legislative council, who was anticipating a party ticket. Speculation had arisen about Danve potentially joining the BJP or Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s party. However, Danve refuted such claims in local media, affirming his loyalty to Uddhav Thackeray.

</excerpt>

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a petition filed by the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena challenging the order of Maharashtra Speaker Rahul Narwekar, who dismissed disqualification pleas against Chief Minister Eknath Shinde faction MLAs.

The bench, consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra, has scheduled the matter for a hearing on March 7.

The Thackeray faction’s plea, challenging the Speaker’s decision and recognition of the Shinde faction as the ‘real Shiv Sena,’ was filed in response to the split in June 2022.

The Speaker’s decision not to disqualify Shinde and his group triggered the legal battle, with the Thackeray faction claiming it was based on “extraneous and irrelevant” considerations.

Previously, the Supreme Court urged the Speaker to promptly resolve the pending disqualification petitions. The Shiv Sena party whip, Sunil Prabhu, appointed by Uddhav Thackeray, filed disqualification petitions against rebel MLAs on June 23, 2022, following their revolt against Thackeray.

In May of the previous year, a five-judge constitutional bench determined that it could not disqualify the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government and reinstate Uddhav Thackeray as Chief Minister, as Thackeray had chosen to resign rather than face a test of strength in the Assembly.

In August 2022, the top court’s three-judge bench referred the issues related to the Shiv Sena’s petition in the Maharashtra political crisis to a five-judge Constitution bench.

On June 29, 2022, the Supreme Court permitted the floor test in the Maharashtra Assembly on June 30, rejecting the stay on the Governor’s directive to Uddhav Thackeray to prove his majority.

Following the court’s order, Uddhav Thackeray resigned as Chief Minister, and Eknath Shinde was subsequently sworn in.

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray announced on Saturday that the party will organize a ‘Maha Aarti’ at the Godavari River bank in Nasik on January 22, coinciding with the consecration day of the Ram Temple. The Pran-Pratishtha (consecration) rituals for Ram Lalla in Ayodhya are scheduled to commence on January 16, a week before the main ceremony.

The main consecration ceremony, led by priest Lakshmi Kant Dixit from Varanasi, will take place on January 22. Ayodhya will observe the Amrit Mahotsav from January 14 to January 22 in preparation for the grand event.

Uddhav Thackeray explained, “The birth anniversary of Bala Saheb falls on January 23, but since the consecration ceremony of the Ayodhya Ram Temple is on January 22, the Shiv Sena will perform a ‘Maha Aarti’ on that day at the Godavari River bank in Nasik.”

Addressing the issue of invitations, Thackeray stated, “We do not want to indulge in matters of who has got the invitation and who has not. When the consecration ceremony will be held in Ayodhya, at the same time, we will participate by offering prayers at the Kala Ram Temple in Nasik. On the same day, we will hold the party’s conference in Nasik itself.”

Nasik’s Kalaram Temple, dedicated to Lord Ram, holds significance as it is believed to be the place where Lord Ram, along with Sita and Lakshman, stayed during their exile (‘Vanvaas’).

Uddhav Thackeray has not received an invitation to the grand consecration ceremony in Ayodhya. Earlier, the Shiv Sena leader remarked that he did not need an invitation to visit the temple, emphasizing that Ram Lalla belongs to everyone and should not be politicized.

Union Minister Narayan Rane criticized Thackeray, suggesting that he should refrain from attending the consecration ceremony. Rane remarked, “Uddhav is crazy; he has no right to speak about the Ram Temple. Such people should not go to see the Ram Temple. It is a sacred place, and such crazy people should not go there.”
