</excerpt>

In a major escalation in West Asia, Iran confirmed that it launched missile strikes on the US-run Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar as retaliation for recent American attacks on its nuclear facilities. The strike has prompted Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates to shut down their airspace “until further notice,” disrupting aviation routes across one of the world’s busiest regions for international air travel.

Gulf Tensions Soar After Missile Strikes

Iran’s National Security Council released a statement on Monday, confirming the strike. “In response to the US aggressive and insolent action against Iran’s nuclear sites and facilities, a few hours ago, the powerful armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran struck the US air base in Al-Udeid, Qatar,” the statement read. The council also noted that the number of missiles used matched the number of bombs dropped by the US during its recent attacks.

While Iran insisted the operation posed “no threat” to Qatar, its government strongly condemned the missile strike. “We express the State of Qatar’s strong condemnation of the attack on Al Udeid Air Base by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, and consider it a flagrant violation of the State of Qatar’s sovereignty and airspace, as well as of international law,” said foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari.

Airspace Closures Disrupt Aviation

Following the attack, Qatar announced the temporary closure of its airspace, citing “precautionary measures” in response to regional instability. This forced multiple flights to divert from Doha.

Other Gulf nations followed suit. Bahrain suspended air traffic, calling the move “a precautionary measure in light of recent regional developments,” according to Bahrain News Agency. Kuwait’s Civil Aviation Directorate also declared an indefinite airspace closure, citing security concerns and regional precedents.

The United Arab Emirates joined the precautionary measures. Flight tracking website Flightradar24 confirmed the disruption, stating, “Lots of aircraft are forced to turn around.”

A US defence official confirmed that Al Udeid was targeted by both short-range and medium-range ballistic missiles launched from Iran, but added, “there are no reports of US casualties.”

The Al Udeid base is one of the US military’s most critical assets in West Asia, and the latest exchange underscores rising regional instability with broader implications for global security and air travel.

</excerpt>

A fugitive with a 12-year-old Interpol red notice against him and sought by the National Investigation Agency in connection with a counterfeiting racket was extradited by the UAE on Friday in an operation coordinated by the CBI, officials said.

Beary Brought to Mumbai After UAE Extradition

Moideenabba Ummer Beary, who is wanted by the Kochi unit of the NIA, was escorted to Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport from Dubai by flight No. AI-920 on Friday after the extradition proceedings were completed in the UAE on Thursday, they added.

“The subject was earlier geo-located in UAE through close follow up by the CBI through Interpol with NCB-Abu Dhabi,” a CBI spokesperson said in a statement.

Beary was wanted by the NIA on a charge of counterfeiting Indian currency notes, cheating and criminal conspiracy.

UAE Extradition Process Started After Arrest in 2015

He was detained in the UAE in 2015 and since then his extradition process was ongoing.

He is accused of arranging good quality Fake Indian Currency Notes in Dubai and bringing the same to Bengaluru via Sharjah.

“The CBI got the Red Notice published against the subject on December 30, 2013, through Interpol on the request of NIA. The accused subject was arrested in the UAE and an extradition request was sent to the UAE through MHA and MEA,” the spokesperson said.

FICNs Recovered from Kerala Locations

The NIA stated that immediately after the FICNs were recovered from four locations in Kasaragod district in Kerala, it obtained the cancellation of Baery’s passport and a red corner notice was also given.

“In 2015, the absconding accused was located and arrested by the UAE authorities, following which an extradition request was sent to that country by the NIA. On completion of the process, the UAE authorities extradited the accused on June 19,” the NIA said in a statement.

₹31 Lakh FICN Conspiracy Traced Back to Karnataka

NIA probes into the case showed that Beary, a Udupi district native from Karnataka, hatched the conspiracy with the co-accused to source good-quality FICNs worth ₹31 lakh face value from the UAE, it stated.

“The FICNs were trafficked into India by another accused, Usman, by flight through Bengaluru. The accused then circulated the FICNs in and around Kasaragod district,” the statement said.

The NIA has chargesheeted six accused, including Beary, up till now in the cases filed under different sections of IPC, it stated.

UAE warns against reckless steps as it urges calm in the region.
</excerpt>

As tensions escalate between Israel and Iran, the United Arab Emirates has called for restraint, warning that reckless actions could destabilize the wider region.

High-Level Diplomatic Talks

UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan spoke by phone with Iran’s newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to a report by the Emirati state news agency WAM. The two leaders discussed the Israeli airstrikes that hit key sites in Iran, including a strike on the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) building in Tehran on June 17, 2025.

UAE’s Message of Caution and Peace

UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed issued a strong warning against “uncalculated and reckless steps,” cautioning that such actions could spill over beyond Israel and Iran. The statement from the UAE Foreign Ministry underlined the country’s concern over rising instability in the region.

Efforts to De-escalate

President Sheikh Mohammed stated that the UAE is actively engaged in talks with various concerned parties to de-escalate the conflict. He also expressed solidarity with the people of Iran during these difficult times.

Regional Context

In recent years, the UAE has worked to rebuild diplomatic ties with Iran after a period of tension. At the same time, the Gulf nation normalized relations with Israel in 2020 through the Abraham Accords, balancing its regional diplomacy carefully.

The project boosts US tech presence in the region and includes shared security commitments to protect sensitive technologies.
</excerpt>

In a historic technological partnership, the United Arab Emirates and the United States have entered into an agreement to create the world’s largest artificial intelligence (AI) campus in Abu Dhabi. The news was released on the official visit of US President Donald Trump to the UAE when he met UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Under this agreement, both countries will co-develop the largest AI data centre outside the United States.

The project will begin with the development of a 1-gigawatt AI data center, as per the US Commerce Department. The project will expand over time and cover an area of 10 square miles, representing a major expansion of American AI and cloud infrastructure in the Middle East.

The White House said, “The AI accord includes the UAE pledging to invest in, construct, or finance US data centers that are at least as big and as capable as in the UAE.” The pact is also viewed as an attempt to enhance access and services for the Global South, enhancing the reach of US-based technology firms in emerging markets.

Again emphasizing the security component of the agreement, the White House went on to say, “The agreement also includes historic commitments by the UAE to further align their national security regulations with the United States, including robust protections to prevent the diversion of US-origin technology.”

According to a Reuters report, the two countries also reached agreement on a general technology framework involving reciprocal commitments to protecting the integrity and security of common technologies.

</excerpt>

In a dramatic push of technology, US President Donald Trump signed a grand deal with the UAE. The vision is to create the world’s largest artificial intelligence data center beyond America. The center will rise in Abu Dhabi. It begins with 1 gigawatt of energy and will scale up to 5 gigawatts—power to power a city. Ultimately, it will cover 10 square miles.

This Trump UAE AI data centre agreement increases US dominance in the Middle East’s cloud and AI market. It also aims at increasing demand in the Global South. Under the terms of the agreement, the UAE will invest in and construct data centres of similar capacity in the US.

US Tech Power Grows in the Gulf

The US Commerce Department verified the size of the project. It starts at 1 gigawatt and will grow in size later on. Abu Dhabi firm G42 will manage building. But US companies will operate the centre. They will provide cloud services managed by the US from all over the region.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick described the agreement as a success for Trump’s international AI initiative. “We are taking America’s tech stack to a strategic partner,” he stated.

Stricter Rules and Greater Tech Grip

The UAE also pledged to harmonize its national security regulations with America. The agreement features stringent checks to prevent any abuse of American technology. It is intended to end the diversion of US-origin software and chips.

It has been reported by CNN that Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang attended one of Trump’s meetings in the UAE. This is a sign of strong industrial backing for the project.

Diplomatic and Economic Success

The UAE calls this a milestone. It aims to be a world AI leader by 2031. The agreement benefits the UAE in balancing its relations with the US and its trade with China. This is trust-building for Trump. US companies will own the data. American technology won’t be out of US control.

More than a build, this is a realignment of global technology power—by diplomacy, data, and dominance.

</excerpt>

U.S. President Donald Trump was given a lavish reception in the United Arab Emirates on Thursday, with Emirati hosts presenting the traditional Al-Ayyala dance in his honor. The President stood alongside local dignitaries as performers took up rows, rhythmically swaying to the beat of traditional drums while waving symbolic sticks. The ceremonial presentation blended hospitality with an unmistakable message of cultural pride and diplomatic warmth.

#DonaldTrump just got the full Emirati welcome — complete with the traditional Al-Ayyala dance and some serious symbolic hair-flipping. Diplomatic flair meets cultural flairpic.twitter.com/4dtjoDMOST

— Peter Parker (@PeterParke955) May 15, 2025

One of the most memorable moments of the dance was a exaggerated hair-flip by one of the dancers widely seen as a humorous nod to Trump’s signature haircut. The move provided a splash of personality to the rest of the dignified proceedings, and was covered by both local media and outside commentators.

Strategic Middle East Tour

President Trump’s trip to the UAE is part of a broader Middle East tour to reaffirm strategic relationships and increase American influence in the region. The sources close to the visit added that high-level talks are anticipated to include energy cooperation, defense ties, and regional security.

Trump has kept close ties with Gulf states during his presidency. His visit to the UAE and the symbolic gesture that greeted him marked continuity in the relationship and teased ongoing collaborations.

Tradition Meets Politics Amidst Visit of Donald Trump

The selection of the Al-Ayyala dance a standard at official UAE state events is an indication of the nation’s desire to blend tradition with diplomacy. Performed frequently at national celebrations and high-profile visits, the dance emphasizes the UAE’s dedication to promoting its heritage while interacting with international powers.

Witnesses called the performance one of measured mixing of soft power and cultural assertion. The playful touches such as the symbolic hair-flip signaled awareness of the public persona of Trump as well as underscored the friendly tone of the bilateral interaction.

Geopolitical Implications Amidst Visit of Donald Trump

Although the official details of the diplomatic negotiations are still under tight wraps, the tone of the welcome served to highlight the UAE’s stance, which is that it still considers the United States, with Trump at its helm, a strategic ally in navigating the intricacies of the Middle East.

With additional regional visits slated in the days ahead, Trump’s current tour represents a watershed moment in U.S. foreign policy overtures. The Emirati welcome, full of symbolism and pageantry, established the tone for what might become a defining period of revived U.S.-Gulf relations during the current administration.

The development was confirmed by the PCB in a statement in wee hours of Friday (May 9).

“The PCB confirms that the remaining fixtures of the HBL PSL X have been shifted to the UAE,” read the statement by the board.

Updated PSL Fixtures to Be Rescheduled in UAE

The following matches will be rescheduled accordingly according to the statement

• Karachi Kings vs Peshawar Zalmi
• Multan Sultans vs Quetta Gladiators
• Qualifier
• Eliminator 1
• Eliminator 2
• Final

“The exact schedule of matches, outlining the dates and venues, will be shared in due course,” added the cricket board.

Escalation of India-Pakistan Tensions Following Cross-Border Attacks

This follows late evening on Thursday (May 8). Pakistan conducted drone and artillery strikes on several areas in India’s Jammu and Kashmir. Punjab and Rajasthan were also targeted.

Indian defense forces, in a quick response, shot down eight missiles aimed at several places in J&K. Indian defense forces also retaliated against the attacks in other states firmly as well.

Earlier in the day, the Indian government’s information office briefed the media. It stated that Indian military forces carried out strikes. Several air defence radars and systems were targeted across different locations in Pakistan.

“Indian response has been in the same domain with the same intensity as Pakistan. It has been reliably learnt that an air defence system at Lahore has been neutralised.”

The reaction followed “on the night of May 7 and 8, Pakistan tried to strike a series of military targets across northern and western India.”

Pakistan’s air defense units of HQ-9 have been brought down by the military. Referring to sources, news agency ANI reported Pakistan’s air defence missile launchers were severely damaged.

This escalates tensions, as drone strikes target Sudan’s strategic Port Sudan.
</excerpt>

Sudan’s government aligned with its military announced it has severed diplomatic relations officially with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and designated the Gulf nation an “aggressor.” The move was made public on Tuesday, May 6, through Defence Minister Yassin Ibrahim’s television address, wherein he assured that Sudan will be recalling its ambassador and closing down its embassy and consulate in the UAE.

The move is a serious escalation in Sudan’s internal struggle, which has burned since April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Ibrahim alleged that the UAE had acted in contravention of Sudan’s sovereignty by supposedly backing the RSF with cutting-edge arms and logistical support.

For more than two years, the world has seen the UAE’s contribution to weakening Sudan’s territorial integrity and putting its people at risk through its proxy—the terrorist RSF militia,” Ibrahim said. He asserted that Abu Dhabi increased its backing of the RSF after the army’s recent recapture of Khartoum in March.”.

Although Sudan has consistently accused the UAE of supporting the RSF, the UAE has constantly refuted these claims. However, Sudan’s government now indicates that it will respond with all the means at its disposal to protect its sovereignty and defend civilians.

The news followed a wave of drone attacks on Port Sudan, the army’s current stronghold and de facto capital. The attacks, the third consecutive day of bombings, have fueled concerns of spreading zones of conflict.

Sudan’s civil war has already killed tens of thousands of people and displaced approximately 13 million. It has also unleashed an enormous humanitarian crisis, with hunger and instability on the rise. The country is still split, with the army controlling the north, east, and center and the RSF in control of much of Darfur and some of the south.

The internet was amazed, with many praising the UAE’s cultural respect for animals and its luxurious, tradition-driven lifestyle.
</excerpt>

A viral video on social media features a man in the UAE boarding an Etihad flight from Abu Dhabi to Morocco while having his pet falcon with him, along with its own passport. The shocking clip went viral and netizens are left agog.

The popular clip, first uploaded by Instagram handle @uaefalcons_, is taken at Abu Dhabi airport’s Etihad counter. A man dressed in traditional Emirati attire has a falcon sitting calmly on his hand. Another traveler, clearly entertained, walks up and asks, “Is it flying?”

The owner of the falcon replies in a self-assured smile, “Yeah, obviously it is flying with us inside the plane.”

The amusing but short interaction goes on as the inquiring passenger asks, “Where are you going?” The owner says, “To Morocco.” The punchline arrives next: “It’s a dumb question, but does he have identification?”—which induces the handler of the falcon to produce an official passport for the bird to the amazement of everyone.

UAE Falcons Have Passports!

As the man browses through the bird’s passport, the information indicates that the falcon is a male bird from Spain with a history of travel through several countries. The surprised man can be heard uttering, “This is extraordinary.”

In the UAE, falcons are revered in culture and tradition. Passporting the birds is not rare, as they are very prized and tend to travel abroad with their owners.

Since then, the video has passed 1.6 million views on Instagram and the comment section is full of shock, laughter, and admiration.

A user quipped, “This falcon travels more than I do!” and another quipped, “He most likely has more stamps on his passport than me.” Another posting captioned it for laughs: “Only in the UAE would this be entirely normal.”

Most praised the respect for animals in the region and its strong traditions. “Arab respect for animals is on another level. This is ultimate Arab luxury,” someone posted.

Reactions varied from “That’s so majestic!” to “Wait, birds get passports now?” One viewer pictured the bizarre scene onboard: “Picture sitting next to a falcon on a plane,” and another captured the general feeling perfectly: “This is why I love the internet.

UAE Embarks on Bold Mission to Let Machines Make Laws

<excerpt>The UAE Cabinet, led by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has announced a groundbreaking AI-powered system to reform lawmaking. The system will monitor real-time impact, streamline drafting, and link global legislative practices through a newly formed Regulatory Intelligence Office.
</excerpt>

The United Arab Emirates is creating a new world standard in lawmaking innovation by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) in its legislative process. The announcement was made during a UAE Cabinet session at Qasr Al Watan in Abu Dhabi by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, about the establishment of a new AI-powered legislative system.

A Regulatory Intelligence Office to Manage AI-Based Legislation

As part of this plan, the UAE Cabinet endorsed the creation of a Regulatory Intelligence Office within the general secretariat of the Cabinet. The office will have an important role in consolidating a single legislative framework connecting all federal and local legislation.

“Today, I chaired the Cabinet meeting at Qasr Al Watan in Abu Dhabi, where we made key decisions to advance legislative processes. We approved the establishment of the Regulatory Intelligence Office within the Cabinet. This office will work on creating a comprehensive legislative plan that brings together all federal and local laws in the UAE, connecting them through artificial intelligence with judicial rulings, executive procedures, and public services,” Maktoum stated, according to Gulf Today.

AI to Reduce Lawmaking Time by 70%

The AI ecosystem will monitor the daily effects of laws on society and the economy. It will process large-scale data to offer actionable insights and recommend timely updates or reforms. Middle East AI News says this will cut the time taken for research, drafting, and approval of new laws by as much as 70%.

“This new legislative system, powered by artificial intelligence, will change how we create laws, making the process faster and more precise,” Sheikh Mohammed tweeted on X.

This new legislative system, powered by artificial intelligence, will change how we create laws, making the process faster and more precise.
— HH Sheikh Mohammed (@HHShkMohd) April 14, 2025

International Cooperation towards Smarter Laws

Global research centers will support the system in aligning UAE laws with the world’s best legislative practices. It will generate a central legislative map, connecting judicial decisions, executive protocols, and public services.

“The new system will allow us to track the daily impact of laws on our people and economy using large-scale data, and it will regularly suggest updates to our legislation. The system will be linked to leading global research centers to follow the best international policies and legislative practices, adapting them to suit the UAE’s unique circumstances,” Maktoum said.

A Strategic Edge Through Legal-Tech

The step is one of a wider strategy by the UAE to bring AI into all government services, infrastructure, and economic planning. The judiciary has already spent money on AI, and this legislative development represents another significant milestone.

Maktoum highlighted the long-term vision behind the initiative, “This new legislative system, powered by artificial intelligence, will change how we create laws, making the process faster and more precise. It will ensure that our legislative framework stands out, aligning our laws with the best global practices while staying true to the unique path of our rapid development.”

</excerpt>

In a world-first, the UAE has launched an integrated AI-driven lawmaking system designed to accelerate legislative processes by up to 70%. Touted as a technological marvel, this move promises smarter governance.

But with innovation comes concern: Can artificial intelligence truly understand the human complexities behind making laws?

What Is the AI-Based Lawmaking System?

The UAE’s system, called a Regulatory Intelligence Ecosystem, uses AI to:

Analyze federal and local laws, court rulings, and administrative guidelines.

Track real-time effects of laws on society and economy.

Recommend updates based on global legal research.

Create the UAE’s largest unified legislative database.

The goal is simple: reduce legislative delays, cut red tape, and improve transparency.

Pros: Why AI Might Work in Lawmaking

Faster Legislation – AI can process and draft laws significantly faster than traditional systems.

Data-Driven Policies – Uses real-world data to refine laws based on actual impact.

Less Bureaucracy – Reduces unnecessary human intervention and procedural delays.

Global Adaptability – Tracks international legal trends and adapts them to local models.

Cons: The Cautionary Side

Lack of Human Judgement – AI may miss emotional, ethical, or cultural nuances.

Bias in Training Data – Biased input could lead to unfair or discriminatory laws.

Accountability Issues – Who is responsible if AI-generated law leads to harm?

Public Trust Deficit – Will people accept laws created with machine assistance?

Impact on Jobs & Legal Professionals

AI’s entrance into lawmaking will reshape the legal landscape:

Job Impact by Legal Role:

Paralegals – High risk; automated research and document review.

Lawyers (junior) – Moderate risk; shift to AI-assisted legal analysis.

Judges – Low risk; human judgment remains essential.

Policy Advisors – Moderate risk; focus will shift to interpreting data-driven insights.

AI won’t eliminate jobs but will change how legal professionals work.

Social Implications: Can AI Grasp Humanity?

Laws are not just logic; they reflect:

Moral values

Social justice

Cultural identity

AI struggles with emotional intelligence and moral grey areas. A law that is logical but lacks empathy can lead to public backlash or social unrest.

“You can teach AI to read the law, but can you teach it to feel the pain of injustice?”

Global Perspective: UAE as a Pioneer

With this move, the UAE sets a benchmark. But will others follow? Countries like Singapore, Estonia, and the UK are also experimenting with AI in governance. The question is not if, but how responsibly AI will be used.

Graph: Global Readiness for AI in Lawmaking (2025 projection)

The Balance: AI as Assistant, Not Authority

AI should be a tool, not a replacement for human lawmakers. The final decision must rest with people who understand the moral, social, and emotional weight of lawmaking.

Conclusion: A New Era, Cautiously Embraced

The UAE’s AI-driven system is a leap into the future. If implemented responsibly, it could redefine how governments work. But it also demands strong ethical oversight, public transparency, and constant human involvement to ensure it serves justice—not just efficiency.

Final Thought:

“AI can help us make laws faster. But only humans can make them fair.”

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has officially expressed its commitment to assisting Syria in its reconstruction efforts. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with Syria’s interim leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, in Abu Dhabi to discuss the path forward for Syria, following the country’s prolonged civil war. This meeting, reported by the UAE’s official WAM news agency, marks a significant step in UAE-Syria relations.

UAE’s Support for Syria’s Rebuilding Efforts

During the meeting, Sheikh Mohamed reaffirmed the UAE’s eagerness to help Syria confront the challenges of its transitional phase and rebuild. He emphasized that the UAE is fully committed to supporting Syria’s recovery, as the nation deals with the aftermath of over a decade of devastating conflict.

Syria’s Progress and Areas of Collaboration

Syria’s Foreign Minister, Asaad al-Shaibani, praised the outcome of the meetings. He stated that “significant achievements have been made today” following the talks. Shaibani specifically pointed to several areas where progress had been made: these include investment opportunities, the resumption of air traffic between the two nations, and the strengthening of bilateral ties across various sectors such as trade and infrastructure.

Sharaa’s Efforts to Secure Gulf Support

Sharaa has actively sought Gulf support for Syria, especially after the rebels ousted President Bashar al-Assad in December 2021. This marked the culmination of years of civil war that left Syria devastated. In the wake of Assad’s fall, the UAE, initially cautious, began to re-engage with Syria, with the aim of stabilizing the region. Prior to the meeting, the UAE had expressed some hesitations regarding Syria’s new leadership.

UAE’s Initial Concerns Over Islamist Affiliation

Despite supporting the idea of Syrian stability, the UAE had concerns about the new Syrian leaders’ Islamist affiliations. In the immediate aftermath of Assad’s removal, UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash had raised alarms about the political Islam ties of Syria’s newly established government. He said the situation was “quite worrying,” but the UAE’s position has evolved as they continue to prioritize regional stability.

Strengthening Relations Between UAE and Syria

Earlier in January 2023, Sharaa had a phone conversation with the UAE president about strengthening ties. During that call, the UAE president reiterated that Syria’s stability and security are in the interest of the entire region. Sheikh Mohamed also affirmed that the UAE would “spare no effort in providing all possible support to Syria and its brotherly people in the coming period.” This demonstrates the UAE’s strategic interest in a stable Syria for broader regional peace.

UAE’s Ongoing Caution Regarding Syrian Leadership

Though the UAE is providing support, analysts believe that the Gulf nation remains cautious about Syria’s new leadership. The UAE has long been wary of political Islam and remains concerned about the influence of Turkey in Syria. This apprehension plays a role in the UAE’s careful approach to its relationship with Syria, even as they engage in rebuilding efforts.

Background: UAE’s Historical Relationship with Syria

Syria has experienced years of conflict after a brutal civil war erupted in 2011, leaving hundreds of thousands dead and millions displaced. The UAE, like many countries, initially distanced itself from Syria under Bashar al-Assad’s regime. However, the shift towards engagement comes in the context of the changing political landscape in the region, where several Arab states are recalibrating their relations with Syria. Despite these complexities, the UAE’s support for Syria’s reconstruction signals a shift towards greater cooperation in the post-Assad era, marking a new chapter in UAE-Syria relations.

In the coming months, it will be important to watch how these bilateral efforts unfold, particularly as Syria continues to rebuild from the ruins of its civil war.

Recent executions highlight challenges migrant workers face in foreign legal systems.
</excerpt>

A wave of grief has hit Kerala following the execution of two Indian nationals from the state in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The victims, Muhammed Rinash Arangilottu and Muraleedharan Perumthatta Valappil, were given the death penalty for two different murder cases.

This comes just days after India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that Abu Dhabi had executed Shahzadi Khan, a woman from Uttar Pradesh, for the alleged killing of a four-month-old child. These incidents have drawn attention to the alarming number of Indians facing death sentences abroad, with the UAE leading the list.

Recent Executions of Indian Nationals in UAE

The UAE’s top court, the Court of Cassation, affirmed the death penalties of Arangilottu and Valappil, and the executions were conducted on February 28, 2025.

Arangilottu, who is originally from Kannur, used to work at Al Ain travel agency when he was arrested for the suspected killing of a UAE citizen. His mother had approached Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and said her son had responded in self-defense when he was being abused by a mentally disturbed Emirati.

MEA officials confirmed that legal and consular aid had been extended to the two men but it could not reverse the judgment.

In a similar vein, Shahzadi Khan, a 33-year-old Uttar Pradesh woman, was executed in the UAE after being found guilty of killing an infant she was taking care of. Her family affirmed her innocence, blaming a medical error instead, but their calls fell on deaf ears.

UAE Paces Indians on Death Row Overseas

According to government data from February, 29 Indians are currently on death row in the UAE, making it the highest among foreign nations. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh revealed that a total of 54 Indians have been sentenced to death worldwide.

Furthermore, the UAE houses the second-highest number of Indian prisoners—2,518—just behind Saudi Arabia, which has 2,633 Indian inmates.

Indians Awaiting the Death Penalty in Other Gulf States

Although the UAE is the highest, other Gulf states also hold Indians on death row:

Saudi Arabia: 12 Indians
Kuwait: 3 Indians
Qatar & Yemen: 1 Indian each

Bahrain, Oman, and Iraq have no Indian prisoners under death penalty as of now.

One of the most prominent is the case of Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse convicted of murder for killing a Yemeni national in 2017. With Yemen’s president sanctioning her execution, her sole recourse now is to seek a pardon by offering blood money (diyah) to the family of the victim.

The Harsh Reality for Indian Migrant Workers

Experts blame the large number of Indians on death row in the Gulf states due to several factors such as oppressive working conditions, denial of access to legal services, and stringent implementation of Sharia law.

The Observer Research Foundation’s Deputy Director, Kabir Taneja, pointed out that Indian migrant workers in the Gulf have their passports taken by employers, and thus they remain vulnerable. Withholding wages and inhumane working conditions could lead people into desperation.

For example, in the case of Nimisha Priya, it is reported that her employer had confiscated her passport so that she could not leave Yemen. In a bid to sedate him and get back her passport, she accidentally killed him.

Fundraising to Avoid Execution

In other cases, Indians on death row have escaped the gallows by paying for their freedom. Indian communities across the globe raised $4 million in 2023 to rescue Kozhikode native Machilakath Abdul Rahim from the gallows in Saudi Arabia. Rahim was condemned to death after an accident killed his employer’s disabled son.

His freedom now awaits a final court nod in Riyadh.

Urgent Need for Diplomatic Intervention

While more Indians remain on death row outside of India, the Indian government is thus increasingly being pressured into offering greater legal aid and intervention. While family members of death row inmates continue to appeal for assistance, they hope against hope for any available options to prevent their loved ones from being executed.

</excerpt>

State Bank of Pakistan said Thursday that the United Arab Emirates had confirmed the rollover of two $1 billion deposits, their maturity extended by another year. Two $1 billion deposits due to mature this month have been confirmed rolled over, Dawn reported, citing the State Bank of Pakistan.

The development comes as a follow-through from the statement issued by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif earlier this week, where he announced that the UAE had agreed to rollover the $2 billion payment due in January. The rollover is an important step in securing external financing, which is a pre-condition by the IMF for approving a $7 billion bailout package for Pakistan.

The nations involved were China, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. These nations helped ensure Pakistan fulfilled the IMF’s demands through timely financing assurances last year. It was upon confirmation of these nations regarding debt rollovers that the IMF could release the fund disbursement. Thus, international support was what would stabilize Pakistan’s economy.

</excerpt>

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has announced a groundbreaking achievement that bolsters the UAE’s position as a global leader in aviation. The Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre has surpassed one million air traffic movements in 2024, marking a historic milestone for the nation’s aviation sector.

In a press statement released today, the GCAA emphasized that this accomplishment represents a major milestone in the UAE’s aviation journey, renowned for its commitment to excellence and innovation.

This achievement highlights the UAE’s vital role as a global aviation hub, leveraging its strategic location, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and highly efficient operational systems. Reaching over one million air traffic movements in a single year reflects the relentless dedication of the GCAA and the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre to delivering world-class air navigation services that cater to global airlines’ needs and elevate the air travel experience.

Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of GCAA, remarked, “Under the guidance of our wise leadership, the UAE has implemented innovative national initiatives and strategies to enhance its competitiveness and prominence in the civil aviation and air services sector, both regionally and globally. Achieving the milestone of one million air traffic movements in a single year is not a mere numerical achievement but a reflection of the UAE’s steadfast commitment to developing the aviation sector as a cornerstone of its national economy and solidifying its position as a global air transport destination.”

He further noted, “This accomplishment highlights the country’s capacity to deliver innovative and integrated solutions that enhance the efficiency of aviation operations. With over 20 per cent growth in air traffic over the past two years, among the highest globally, the UAE is well-equipped to handle even greater volumes in the years ahead, supported by advanced infrastructure, a skilled workforce, and state-of-the-art technologies.”

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of GCAA, praised the efforts behind this milestone, saying, “Exceeding one million air traffic movements reflects the dedication and hard work of the team at the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre. This is a result of years of planning, innovation, and close collaboration with our partners in the aviation sector. With an average growth rate of 10.3 per cent in 2024 compared to last year 2023, we remain committed to continuously enhancing our systems and services to uphold the highest standards of safety and efficiency, reflecting sustainable development and continued success in managing air traffic successfully and professionally.”

On December 22, 2024, the one-millionth air traffic movement was recorded with the arrival of Emirates Flight 305 from Shanghai, marking a historic moment for the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre. This milestone showcases the Centre’s adoption of cutting-edge technologies and its pursuit of excellence in aviation.

This remarkable achievement aligns with the UAE’s strategic vision, focusing on leadership, innovation, and sustainability. As the global aviation industry rebounds from the challenges of the pandemic, the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre has demonstrated its ability to manage increasing air traffic efficiently and flexibly, setting a global benchmark in airspace management.

In 2024, the Centre achieved significant advancements, including the integration of advanced systems and innovative solutions to enhance airspace efficiency and reduce delays. In line with the “We the UAE 2031” vision and “The Year of Sustainability,” the Centre adopted sustainable practices to support the nation’s goals and reduce the aviation sector’s environmental impact.

Additionally, it enhanced airspace capacity to meet growing demands while maintaining the highest safety and reliability standards, further strengthening global airlines’ confidence in the UAE’s aviation services.

</excerpt>

UAE Rescues 127 Critically Wounded Patients and Families from Gaza: A Humanitarian Mission of Hope

In an extraordinary display of humanitarian aid and compassion, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has successfully rescued 127 critically wounded patients and their family members from the war-torn region of Gaza. The rescue mission, organized under the directives of UAE’s leadership, reflects the country’s unwavering commitment to providing relief to those in dire need, especially during times of crisis. This operation stands as a testament to the UAE’s growing role as a global leader in humanitarian efforts.

This article delves into the details of the rescue mission, the plight of the victims, and the broader implications of such efforts in the region.

Background: The Crisis in Gaza

Gaza, a densely populated region, has faced recurring cycles of violence, political unrest, and humanitarian crises over the past decades. The latest conflict has escalated tensions to unprecedented levels, leaving thousands of civilians dead, injured, or displaced.

Healthcare Under Siege: Hospitals and healthcare facilities in Gaza have been overwhelmed with casualties, struggling to operate due to limited resources, power outages, and lack of medical supplies.

Civilian Casualties: According to international agencies, civilians, including children and the elderly, make up a significant percentage of those affected.

Urgent Need for Evacuations: Many critically wounded individuals require advanced medical care that is unavailable in Gaza, making international intervention crucial.

Amidst this grim reality, the UAE stepped in with its rescue mission, bringing a glimmer of hope to those in desperate need.

Details of the UAE’s Rescue Mission

The UAE’s operation to evacuate 127 critically wounded patients and their family members was executed with precision and care, ensuring the safe transfer of those in need to facilities where they could receive proper medical attention.

Planning and Coordination

The mission involved meticulous planning and collaboration between the UAE government, humanitarian organizations, and local authorities in Gaza. Key aspects included:

Medical Assessments: Identifying patients who were critically injured and required immediate evacuation.

Transport Logistics: Arranging specialized medical transport, including air ambulances equipped with life-support systems.

Safety Protocols: Ensuring the safety of the evacuees during the journey, given the ongoing conflict in the region.

Execution

The rescue operation was carried out in multiple stages:

Evacuation from Gaza: Patients were transported from various locations in Gaza to a secure departure point.

Medical Support During Transit: A team of highly trained medical professionals accompanied the evacuees to provide emergency care during the journey.

Arrival in UAE: Upon arrival, the patients and their families were taken to specialized healthcare facilities in the UAE for advanced treatment.

Post-Arrival Care

The UAE has ensured that the patients receive the best possible care, including:

Advanced Medical Treatment: Access to state-of-the-art facilities and specialized medical teams for surgeries, rehabilitation, and ongoing care.

Psychological Support: Counseling and mental health services for both patients and their families to address trauma and emotional distress.

Accommodation and Logistics: Providing safe housing and basic necessities for family members accompanying the patients.

The Significance of This Mission

The UAE’s rescue mission holds profound significance on multiple levels, highlighting the country’s dedication to humanitarian causes and its role in global relief efforts.

1. A Lifeline for the Wounded

The mission has provided critically injured patients with a chance to recover and regain their lives. Many of these individuals faced life-threatening injuries that could not be treated in Gaza’s overstretched healthcare system.

2. Humanitarian Diplomacy

By spearheading such initiatives, the UAE reinforces its position as a nation committed to global humanitarian values, fostering goodwill and cooperation on the international stage.

3. Inspiration for Collective Action

The UAE’s efforts serve as a model for other nations, encouraging collective action to address humanitarian crises and protect vulnerable populations.

4. Addressing the Psychological Impact

War and displacement take a significant toll on mental health. By providing both medical and psychological support, the UAE’s mission addresses the holistic needs of the evacuees.

Voices from the Ground: Stories of Survival

The rescue mission has brought relief and hope to many families who faced unimaginable hardships. Here are some real-life stories:

A Mother’s Relief: Fatima, a mother of three, recounted how her son was critically injured during an airstrike. “I thought I would lose him,” she said. “The UAE’s help saved his life.”

A Child’s Second Chance: Seven-year-old Ahmed, who suffered severe injuries, is now receiving life-saving treatment in a UAE hospital. His father expressed gratitude, saying, “The UAE gave my son a second chance at life.”

Doctors’ Dedication: Medical professionals involved in the mission have described it as a “challenging yet deeply rewarding” experience, highlighting their commitment to saving lives despite the obstacles.

The Broader Context: UAE’s Role in Humanitarian Aid

The UAE has long been recognized for its active role in global humanitarian initiatives. This rescue mission is part of a broader pattern of the country’s efforts to alleviate suffering and support vulnerable populations worldwide.

Previous Initiatives

Yemen Crisis: The UAE has provided billions in humanitarian aid to Yemen, addressing food security, healthcare, and infrastructure needs.

COVID-19 Pandemic: During the pandemic, the UAE sent medical supplies and vaccines to over 120 countries, demonstrating solidarity during a global crisis.

Refugee Support: The country has hosted and supported refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, and other conflict zones, offering education, healthcare, and housing.

Commitment to Humanitarian Principles

The UAE’s actions align with its national philosophy of tolerance, compassion, and global cooperation. Its leadership continues to prioritize humanitarian aid as a cornerstone of its foreign policy.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

While the UAE’s mission has been widely praised, there are challenges and lessons to consider:

1. Access to Conflict Zones

Evacuating patients from active conflict zones requires delicate negotiations and collaboration with local and international stakeholders.

2. Sustained Support

Beyond immediate rescue and treatment, there is a need for long-term support to help patients and their families rebuild their lives.

3. Global Collaboration

The success of such missions depends on collective efforts from the international community to address the root causes of conflicts and provide comprehensive aid.

A Beacon of Hope

The UAE’s rescue mission for 127 critically wounded patients and their families from Gaza is a powerful reminder of the impact of compassion and collective action. By prioritizing humanitarian values and leveraging its resources, the UAE has not only saved lives but also inspired hope in a time of despair.

This operation underscores the importance of global solidarity in addressing crises and protecting the most vulnerable. As the UAE continues to lead by example, it sets a precedent for other nations to step up and play their part in building a more compassionate and resilient world.

Investigations are ongoing, with the aircraft rented for a sightseeing trip.
</excerpt>

An Indian-origin doctor, Sulaymaan Al Majid, was among the two people killed in a light aircraft crash off the coast of Ras Al Khaimah on December 26. The 26-year-old, who is an UAE bred national, was flying with his family when the tragic accident happened just moments after take-off, near the Cove Rotana Hotel at about 2 pm.

It took the life of the 26-year-old Pakistani female pilot. The GCAA has announced that the accident has been confirmed, and its investigation is still on to determine what led to the incident. The aircraft was registered with Jazirah Aviation Club.

Sulaymaan had hired the light aircraft for a sightseeing tour with his family present at the aviation club. His younger brother was to board the next flight. Initially, family members were informed that the glider had lost radio contact. Later, they were informed that the aircraft had made an emergency landing, and the occupants were taken to the hospital. Tragically, Sulaymaan died before his family could reach him, and his time of death was after 4:30 pm.

Majid Mukarram, the father of Sulaymaan, shared that the family felt devastated at having lost a cherished member of their family when they were all ready to celebrate New Year together. “Sulaymaan was the light of our lives,” Majid said, with the deep sadness they are now trying to accept.

He was at the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom, but he was in clinical fellowship. Indeed, Sulaymaan held a deep-seated engagement with British Medical Association honorary secretary and co-chair at Northern Resident Doctors Committee whereby he would pursue pay restoration issues and advocate that “junior doctors” ought to be dubbed “resident doctors”.

According to the General Civil Aviation Authority, the aircraft was confirmed to have crashed in the sea. Both the pilot and co-pilot were said to have lost their lives.

A 26-year-old, Sulaymaan, was co-piloting the aircraft with a 26-year-old Pakistani woman who also died in the incident. Sulaymaan was a UAE native, and he had hired the plane for a family sightseeing tour. His family was present at the aviation club to watch when he hired the plane, and his younger brother was scheduled to fly in the next available time slot.

His father expressed his sorrow, saying, “We were all looking forward to the New Year as a family, planning to celebrate together. Instead, our lives have been shattered. It feels like time has stopped for us. Sulaymaan was the light of our lives, and we don’t know how to move forward without him.”

Crash happened hours after takeoff near the Cove Rotana Hotel, and according to the reports, it lost radio contact before making an emergency landing attempt. However, both the people died immediately despite efforts to save them.

Sulaymaan was a clinical fellow in County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom. He took part in the British Medical Association where he was involved in campaigning for the rights of “junior doctors” to be categorized into “residents.”
The aviation authority began an investigation into the cause of the tragic deaths caused by the crash.

</excerpt>

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become the first country in its region to achieve observer status in the Eurasian Group on Combating Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (EAG). This milestone underlines the UAE’s dedication to combating financial crimes and fostering regional and international cooperation.

A Step Forward in Combating Financial Crimes

The EAG is an associate member of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), comprising nine member states, including China, India, and Russia. By joining as an observer, the UAE will collaborate closely with these nations to enhance global efforts to combat money laundering and terrorism financing.

The UAE already holds observer status in the Asia-Pacific Group on Money Laundering (APG) and is a full member of the Middle East and North Africa Financial Action Task Force (MENAFATF).

Expert Contributions and Collaboration

With its new role, the UAE will actively contribute expertise, operational insights, and technical resources to the Eurasian Group. The country’s efforts aim to strengthen regional frameworks against financial crimes while sharing valuable experiences from the Middle East and North Africa.

Khaled Mohammed Balama, Governor of the UAE Central Bank and Chair of the National Anti-Money Laundering and Combatting the Financing of Terrorism Committee (NAMLCTFC), stated:

“This recognition reflects the international community’s confidence in the UAE as a reliable and effective partner. It underscores our commitment to enhancing regional and global cooperation to safeguard the financial system.”

Hamid Saif Al Zaabi, Secretary-General of NAMLCTFC, added:

“Through our observer status, we look forward to supporting EAG initiatives and strengthening national and regional capabilities to combat financial crimes.”

Eurasian Group: A Global Network

Established in 2004, the Eurasian Group includes nine member countries and 16 observers. It operates under the FATF framework, uniting 23 international organizations in its mission to combat financial crimes that threaten economic stability.

Commitment to a Safer Financial Environment

This move aligns with the UAE’s broader objectives of enhancing financial system resilience and contributing to global efforts against money laundering and terrorism financing. By participating in EAG activities, the UAE aims to bolster the impact of regional and international frameworks combating financial crime.

</excerpt>

The UAE is set to celebrate its 53rd National Day, known as Eid Al Etihad, on December 2, offering residents a chance to reflect on the nation’s remarkable journey of resilience, determination, and success. This year, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has declared official paid holidays for private sector employees on December 2 and 3 (Monday and Tuesday), aligning with the weekend, giving UAE residents an opportunity to enjoy an extended break.

Significance of UAE National Day

Eid Al Etihad marks the historic unification of the seven emirates in 1971, under the leadership of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, forming the United Arab Emirates. The theme of this year’s celebration is the “Spirit of the Union,” with numerous events planned to honor the occasion.

Rules and Regulations for National Day

The UAE government has implemented several guidelines to ensure safe and respectful celebrations. Key restrictions include:

Adhering to traffic regulations and following police instructions.

Avoiding the use of party sprays by drivers, passengers, or pedestrians.

Keeping both front and rear license plates visible and not altering vehicle colors or tinting the front windows.

Refraining from placing stickers, signs, or logos unless they are officially approved for Eid Al Etihad.

Not exceeding the permitted number of passengers and avoiding unsafe actions like hanging out of windows or sunroofs.

Avoiding unauthorized vehicle modifications that may obstruct vision or create noise.

Ensuring that roads are clear for emergency vehicles and refraining from obstructing traffic or performing stunts.

How to Celebrate UAE National Day

Dubai’s celebrations will span from November 28 to December 3, featuring shopping deals, acrobat performances, musical shows, fireworks, and a variety of culinary experiences. In Sharjah, all public museums will offer free entry on December 1 and 2. The official National Day festivities will take place in Al Ain, with the country’s rulers and leaders in attendance to mark the occasion.

</excerpt>

Israeli authorities confirmed on Sunday that Rabbi Zvi Kogan, an envoy for the Chabad Orthodox Jewish organization, has been found dead in the United Arab Emirates. Kogan, who went missing Thursday, was reportedly in the UAE as part of the Abu Dhabi Chabad chapter. His death has sparked outrage in Israel, with the government labeling it an “anti-Semitic terrorist incident” and vowing to bring those responsible to justice.

The rabbi’s disappearance prompted an investigation by Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, and the UAE authorities. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement condemning the murder, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to tracking down the perpetrators.

The murder of Zvi Kogan, of blessed memory, is an abhorrent act of antisemitic terrorism. The State of Israel will use all means and will deal with the criminals responsible for his death to the fullest extent of the law.

— Prime Minister of Israel (@IsraeliPM) November 24, 2024

Kogan, an Israeli-Moldovan national, was related to Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, who was killed in a terror attack at the Nariman Chabad House in Mumbai in 2008. His tragic death comes at a sensitive time, as Israel and the UAE, who normalized relations under the Abraham Accords in 2020, continue to maintain ties despite the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

The situation has raised concerns about potential tensions between Israel and the UAE. Following Kogan’s death, Israel issued a travel warning, advising against non-essential visits to the UAE due to threats against Israeli nationals and Jewish communities. The warning urged Israelis to avoid public places linked to the Jewish community and to exercise heightened vigilance.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed sorrow over Kogan’s death, calling it a reminder of the persistent anti-Semitic hostility faced by the Jewish people. He also thanked the UAE authorities for their swift response and pledged to continue the work of Chabad emissaries worldwide, despite the attack.

Reports from Pakistan’s media on Sunday revealed that the International Cricket Council (ICC) had informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in writing that India will not travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025, citing security concerns.

If Pakistan pulls out, the ICC could face legal challenges related to contracts with broadcasters and sponsors who expect high-profile matches between the two nations. This could lead to legal disputes, revenue losses, and a reduction in financial support from the ICC to its member nations.

The PCB insists that India should travel to Pakistan, pointing to the 2023 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, where the Indian team traveled to India for matches. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has proposed a hybrid model for the tournament, with the final likely taking place at Dubai International Stadium in the UAE. However, the PCB opposes this arrangement.

There is a strong possibility that the venue for the Champions Trophy may change if the two boards do not agree. Due to strained political relations, India has not visited Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup, and the teams last played a bilateral series in 2012-13 in India. Since then, the two sides have mainly faced off in ICC tournaments and Asia Cups.

India remains firm in its stance against traveling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, with BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla stating earlier this year that India would only go if the Indian Government approved it.

Last year, Pakistan hosted the Asia Cup, but the event was held under a hybrid model, with India playing its matches in Sri Lanka and the rest of the tournament held in Pakistan.
