Most arrests were linked to controversial social media posts. In Assam alone, authorities made 14 arrests so far.

Arrest of Assam MLA Sparks Action

The first arrest happened on Thursday. Assam police detained Aminul Islam, an MLA from the opposition party All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). They charged him with sedition after he claimed that both the 2019 Pulwama attack and the Pahalgam attack were “conspiracies by the government.” On Friday, a court sent him to police custody for four days.

Officers also picked up Sumon Mazumdar, also known as Bulbul Alom Mazumdar, from Hailakandi, Mashud Azhar from Nagaon, and another individual from Hajo near Guwahati. Police accused them of posting “anti-India comments” online.

Moreover, Cachar district police arrested two more people for sharing social media posts that allegedly supported Pakistan.

Assam CM Warns of Tougher Action

Reacting to the situation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “If required, we will impose provisions of the National Security Act on them. We are examining all social media posts, and action will be taken against those who, we feel, are anti-national… There are no similarities between Bharat and Pakistan. The two countries are enemy nations and we must remain that way.”

Arrests in Tripura

Meanwhile, Tripura reported four arrests related to similar online comments. In Dhalai district, police arrested retired teacher Jawhar Debnath and another individual named Kuldip Mandal. Both had made “anti-national comments” in the wake of the Pahalgam attack. In North Tripura district, officers arrested retired teacher Sajal Chakraborty from Dharmanagar. Authorities also detained Jahirul Islam from Sonamura in Sepahijala district.

Arrest in Meghalaya

In Meghalaya, police arrested 30-year-old Simon Shylla on Friday. He was taken into custody from the East Khasi Hills district after posting an “anti-national comment” on a news video aired by a Guwahati-based channel.

</excerpt>

A 35-year-old wild elephant, which sustained severe injuries after being struck by a train in Tripura’s Khowai district, succumbed to its wounds on Monday night, according to forest department officials.

The incident occurred on December 28 when a train traveling from Agartala to Dharmanagar collided with the elephant in the Shalbagan area, causing fractures to both of its hind legs. The elephant had been receiving medical treatment since the accident.

A formal complaint was filed with the Government Railway Police in Teliamura and the divisional manager of the Northeast Frontier Railway in Lumding, alleging that the train was traveling at nearly 50 kmph, exceeding the 20 kmph speed limit set for elephant corridors in the region.

Veterinary doctors conducted a postmortem on the elephant in the presence of forest officials. A similar incident occurred in February when another elephant was killed after being hit by a train in the same area.

Elephants were declared India’s national heritage animal in 2010 and are classified as Schedule-I animals under the Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act 2022, recognizing them as endangered species. Wildlife experts are urging the implementation of stronger safety measures, including mapping critical routes and collaborating with various stakeholders such as the administration, railways, public works department, and the National Highways Authority of India to prevent future incidents in designated elephant corridors.

</excerpt>

The All Tripura Hotel and Restaurant Owners Association has decided to deny rooms to Bangladeshi nationals amid the growing unrest in the neighbouring country. The association has announced a boycott of Bangladeshi citizens, refusing to provide them with hotel services. The decision follows allegations of atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh and the controversial arrest of ISKCON member Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu.

In a press release, the association stated that India, as a secular country, respects all religions. However, they expressed deep concern over recent incidents in Bangladesh, including the desecration of the Indian national flag and targeted actions by extremist groups against the minority Hindu community. These incidents, they said, have escalated to unprecedented levels.

Following an emergency meeting, the association unanimously decided to stop offering hotel services to Bangladeshi citizens temporarily visiting the state. The move, they added, aims to send a strong message against the ongoing atrocities and the deteriorating situation in the neighboring country.

This decision marks a significant development in cross-border relations, reflecting the growing concerns over minority rights and communal harmony in the region.

Earlier on December 2, in a shocking incident, the premises of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala were reportedly breached by unidentified miscreants.

The alleged attackers were accused of desecrating the national flag of Bangladesh, triggering widespread condemnation and calls for justice. As per sources, activists of the Hindu Conflict Association protested in front of the Agartala Bangladesh Assistant High Commission office unfurled the national flag of Bangladesh and burnt it. Excitement builds. A large police force is at the scene.

Speaking to TDG, a protester stated, “What is happening in Bangladesh is known to everybody. We are protesting against the atrocities of Hindus and for insulting the Indian flag. We have submitted a memorandum to the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission and also we asked them to take effective steps to take measures against the culprits.” Meanwhile, the protesters denied any unruly protests and stated that peaceful demonstrations were held.

A statement has been taken by the Government of India on the breach of premises at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala. The statement read, “The incident earlier today of the breach of premises at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala is deeply regrettable. Diplomatic and consular properties should not be targeted under any circumstances. Government is taking action to step up security arrangements for the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and their Deputy/Assistant High Commissions in the country.”

Bangladesh owes Tripura Rs 135 crore for electricity under an agreement through NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd. Tripura has asked for immediate payment.

Tensions Rise Amid “Anti-India Activities”

This request comes as tensions grow due to “anti-India activities” in Bangladesh. Recently, an Agartala-Kolkata bus traveling via Dhaka was attacked in Brahmanbaria district. The passengers were threatened and anti-India slogans were shouted, although no one was hurt. This incident has added to the concerns.

Payment Delays Despite Regular Transactions

Tripura’s Power Minister, Ratan Lal Nath, said, “Though Rs 135 crore is outstanding, Bangladesh has been making the payments regularly. For each unit of power, we are charging Rs 6.65, which is a decent rate compared with the one we get from domestic connections.” However, delays in payments have led to increased dues.

Power Supply Restricted Due to Payment Issues

In May 2024, Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) reduced the power supply to Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) after delayed payments. Over the past year, the delays have caused the outstanding amount to grow.

Efforts to Resolve the Payment Issue

Debasish Sarkar, Managing Director of TSECL, explained, “The BPDB owes more than Rs 1 crore to Tripura State Electricity Corporation. We are trying hard to make sure that the payment is streamlined but there seem to be some financial issues. We have written letters to the Bangladesh authorities. I have personally met the chairman of the Bangladesh Power Development Board. The power minister has also spoken to the Union Power Ministry so that the issues could be resolved as early as possible.” He added that TSECL is struggling financially due to the growing dues.

Agreement and Oversight

Under the agreement, Bangladesh is entitled to 160 megawatts of power from Tripura, with NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN) overseeing the trading. Sarkar mentioned, “We have also spoken to the NVVN to make sure that the timely payment is made.”

Installment Payments and Power Generation Issues

Bangladesh has been paying in installments, which has disrupted the financial flow for TSECL. Moreover, power generation in Tripura has dropped by 60 to 70 megawatts. As a result, Tripura has had to buy power from exchanges to meet the growing demand. Sarkar concluded, “If all the power plants generate power to the optimum level, we would have been in a better position. Lack of gas also hindered the power generation in the thermal power projects.”

In addition to these arrests, the BSF reported significant seizures of contraband, which included 66,316 bottles of phensedyl cough syrup, over 9,000 kg of ganja, and more than six lakh yaba tablets.

BSF detained 55 illegal Rohingya immigrants

From January 1 to November 30, the BSF detained 55 illegal Rohingya immigrants, along with 620 Bangladeshi nationals and 260 Indians during various operations. These efforts align with the BSF’s primary responsibility of maintaining vigilant surveillance along the 856-km border with Bangladesh in Tripura.

The BSF Tripura Frontier has taken on multiple roles, including combating insurgency, safeguarding the integrity of the border, and preventing transborder crimes. The force has consistently collaborated with state authorities and other security and intelligence agencies, ensuring border protection while promoting harmony within local communities.

In July, a border coordination conference was held in Shillong, Meghalaya, where inspector generals (IG) of the BSF and regional commanders of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) addressed key bilateral issues to enhance cooperation between the two border forces. The discussions aimed to promote the welfare of border populations and strengthen ties between the neighboring nations.

Moreover, during recent unrest in Bangladesh, the BSF coordinated with the BGB and other agencies to ensure the safe return of stranded Indian students and workers, providing them with necessary assistance.

Chief Minister Manik Saha praised the BSF for its vital role in securing the international border during a program at the BSF frontier headquarters in Shalbagan, West Tripura. He also honored the martyrs who lost their lives in the line of duty and recognized the veterans of the 1971 war.

The severe weather has impacted around 30,000 people across the state. To manage the situation, the government has established 321 relief camps. The heavy rainfall, which has reached 375 mm in some southern districts and 350 mm in other areas, has led to the closure of schools, colleges, and universities.

Chief Minister Manik Saha, speaking to ANI on Wednesday, highlighted the severity of the situation. He noted that this level of rainfall, with 375 mm recorded in the southern districts, is unprecedented in Tripura. The intense rainfall has caused landslides and caused river levels to rise above danger levels.

The Chief Minister assured that relief efforts are underway, with a relief team already deployed and additional assistance being arranged from other states to address the crisis. The government is working to manage the situation and provide necessary aid to those affected by the disaster.

</excerpt>

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for leading the country to new heights, stating that under his guidance, the Tripura government is also focused on enhancing all sectors, following his example.

“The country has achieved great heights today under the able leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Tripura government is also striving to move the state forward in the direction guided by the prime minister. The government is working towards the overall development of Tripura by improving all sectors, including health, education, agriculture, and sports. This time, too, the prime minister has called for observing the Har Ghar Tiranga program with due dignity, which means honouring those who have sacrificed for the country,” said Saha.

Saha made these remarks during the launch of the Tiranga Yatra at Umakanta Ground in Agartala on Tuesday morning, an event organised by the state government. He highlighted that the Har Ghar Tiranga program aims to stir patriotic feelings among the public.

“The country comes first, before anything else. Various programs have been organised with this goal in mind. Social organisations in the private sector are conducting various programs as well. As part of the Har Ghar Tiranga program, a tricolour walk was organised today, with participation from people of various professions, including government officials, and school and college students. Such programs are being held in various sub-divisions and districts throughout the state,” said Saha.

The chief minister also noted that consultations have been held at multiple levels to guarantee the success of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign.

“We hoisted the national flag even before 2022. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi insisted that the national flag should be hoisted in every household. Tripura government took appropriate measures to make this happen,” he added.

“According to 2022 statistics, there are 8.5 lakh houses in Tripura. The government took the initiative to produce national flags of different sizes in proportion to this number. Responding to the government’s call, the people of the state have come forward to make the Har Ghar Tiranga program a success. We have seen many prime ministers before, but I have never witnessed such passion from any of them before. This patriotic sentiment is only possible because of PM Modi. Additionally, we must take an oath to move the country and the state forward,” he said.

The event was attended by Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder, social worker Rajib Bhattacharya, and ICA Department Secretary PK Chakraborty. Following the ceremony, the chief minister and other dignitaries joined a vibrant procession through the capital city, proudly carrying the national flag.

</excerpt>

The Tripura High Court has received confirmation from the State Election Commission that the long-awaited village committee elections will finally take place in December. This development comes after a series of legal challenges and court interventions that have delayed the electoral process.

State Election Commissioner Sardindu Choudhary acknowledged the previous court cases surrounding the Village Councils election, stating that all these cases have now been resolved. He mentioned that the commission needs around four months after the completion of the panchayat election to organize the village committee election, a timeline that the court has also agreed upon.

Previously, the High Court had intervened in the election proceedings, leading to delays and legal proceedings related to contempt of court. However, with a clear directive from the High Court, the State Election Commission has announced the December schedule for the village committee elections.

The preparation phase for these elections is set to commence post-July, with tasks such as finalizing voter lists and boundaries expected to be completed by August. The commission is committed to ensuring all necessary logistical and administrative arrangements are in place for a smooth electoral process.

There are 587 village committees under the commission’s purview, and preparations are underway to ensure their readiness for the upcoming elections. The exact polling date will be determined based on administrative considerations and compliance with court directives.

The upcoming elections hold significance for local governance, and the State Election Commission is dedicated to conducting them in a transparent and fair manner to uphold democratic principles.

The High Court, having lifted the stay on the election process, will continue to monitor the proceedings closely to ensure adherence to the new timeline. This announcement has been positively received by political stakeholders and the public, eager for the resumption of the democratic process in their communities.

</excerpt>

In a tragic incident, a woman allegedly brutally killed her eight-year-old son in West Joynagar, reportedly unable to manage the child’s misbehavior, as she told the police.

The event occurred on Monday evening under the jurisdiction of West Agartala Police Station. The victim was the son of Ram Gowala and Suprabha Gowala, originally from Kailashahar. According to the police, Ram Gowala had abandoned the family, leaving Suprabha to care for their son alone. About two weeks prior, Suprabha had moved into a rented house in West Joynagar with her son. It was in this rented home that the horrific crime occurred around 6 pm, as reported by the police.

Officer in Charge of West Tripura Police Station, Paritosh Das, stated that a case has been registered under Section 302 of the IPC. Suprabha admitted to the crime, confessing to the police that she tied her son with a rope and beat him to death with a bamboo stick. She claimed that her son caused her unbearable distress, preventing her from working. According to her, the child would steal money from the house and create problems when she took him to her workplace.

Suprabha stated that she killed her son to free herself from this ongoing torment. After the incident, the West Agartala Police, along with a large contingent of TSR forces, arrived at the scene and found Suprabha sitting beside her son’s lifeless body. She declared that she would accept any punishment, including the death penalty, for her crime.

Suprabha Gowala also has a married daughter. The police have taken Suprabha into custody and recovered the boy’s body from the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

</excerpt>

Ranjit Debbarma, former chief of the outlawed All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) and current MLA from the Ramchandraghat assembly constituency, stated on Friday that implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) would undermine the previous peace accord signed with rebel organizations. According to Debbarma, the ATTF peace agreement, signed in 1993, included a consensus with the state government to identify and deport anyone who had illegally entered Tripura after March 25, 1971.

Debbarma remarked, “If the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 is implemented in Tripura, the ATTF agreement stands null and void. As per the new citizenship rules, the new cut-off for citizenship is 2014. In Assam, the commitments made in the AGP agreement are still being protected and hence CAA is not applicable there. The Assam government has also conducted the NRC exercise to make sure that the illegal infiltrators could be identified. We have a simple demand that considering all these factors, CAA should not be implemented here.”

A group of surrendered militants led by Debbarma recently met with the Governor of Tripura, Indrasena Reddy Nallu, at Raj Bhavan, presenting a detailed memorandum explaining the historical context of the peace accords signed with various banned outfits. Debbarma added, “People who have surrendered from different armed groups floated an organization called Tripura United Indigenous People’s Council (TUIPC). When we met the governor of Tripura, we raised multiple issues that the surrendered militants have been facing barring the issue of CAA.”

Debbarma also highlighted that the inner line permit, a key aspect of the peace accords, had never been implemented in Tripura. He noted, “In Manipur, the inner line permit system exists, but here it was never introduced. Moreover, members of militant groups who surrendered before other central government agencies such as CRPF, Assam Rifles and BSF were not recognized by the Special Branch of Tripura Police which is why they were deprived of the benefits and schemes of the state government which were formulated to rehabilitate the militants involved in the insurgent movement.”

The insurgency in Tripura lasted for more than two decades, with terror groups like the NLFT and ATTF considered the most dreaded organizations.

He is now being shifted to Guwahati for further legal procedures,” local police station in-charge of Bishalgarh Police Station Rana Chatterjee told ANI.

Miah originates from Matinagar, a village situated on the border in West Tripura district. He faces charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 120b, 121A, 153A(1), 153B, 465, 471, 295A, 109, and 370, as well as sections 12(1)(a)/12(1A)(a)(b) and 12(2) of the Indian Passport Act 1967.

Investigation agencies have also uncovered Miah’s connections to unlawful associations and terrorist organizations.

ANI quoted order copy of the transit remand, “….the accused person Hannan Miah was arraigned as accused in the case and is involved in conspiracy for trafficking large number of Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingya migrants from Bangladesh making a large number of forged or fake Indian ID Documents and having link with other absconding accused persons and terrorist organization, underground outfits and unlawful associations.”

The order issued by the local court also stressed the importance of presenting him before the special court.

“In my view, while deciding prayer of Transit Remand the Court is not obligated to record detailed reasons and considering the totality of facts and circumstances in the instant case and to safeguard the ongoing investigation, I am satisfied that the production of the arrested accused person namely Hannan Miah by the NIA Special Court in Guwahati is essential. The prayer of the Tramit Remand of the accused namely Hannan Miah, son of Kalu Mia allowed for four days w.e.f today. The arresting team is directed to produce the above named accused person in the NIA Special Court Guwahati before the Id. NIA Special Judge, Guwahati, Asam as soon as practicable within the said period. Send the copy of this order to all concerned. The case is disposed of,” the order concluded.

A three-member team of NIA investigators arrived in Tripura from Assam to assume custody of the accused individual.

</excerpt>

Taur Ali, a resident of Prakash Latiapura Village Panchayat in the Unakoti region of Tripura, brutally murdered his wife, Nichhafa Begam, on Saturday in a terrible and shocking occurrence.

According to the reports, on the night of May 18, around 1 am, a violent altercation erupted between the couple when Nichhafa refused to comply with Taur Ali’s monetary demands.
In a fit of rage, Taur Ali attacked her with a sharp blade, delivering five vicious blows to her head and neck. Nichhafa Begam succumbed to her injuries on the spot.
Reportedly, the accused, Taur Ali, immediately fled from the spot after committing the crime.

When the Irani Police Station officers got there on Sunday morning, they moved Nichhafa Begam’s body to the mortuary of the Unakoti District Hospital so that it could be examined postmortem.
In addition, Taur Ali has escaped the scene and a suspect has been taken into custody for interrogation, therefore the police have initiated a vigorous manhunt to capture him.

While speaking to ANI, an OC (officer in charge) of the Irani Police Station, Jatindra Das, said, “We received reports of Nichhafa Begam’s murder. The preliminary investigation indicates she was killed by her husband, Taur Ali, over a monetary dispute. We are actively searching for the accused and are committed to bringing him to justice.”
As per police officials, Nichhafa Begam had been subjected to continuous abuse by her husband, Taur Ali, who had been demanding money from her father’s house for a long time.

Nichhafa sought refuge at her father’s house to escape the abuse, but her husband made her come home even though she was very sick and had just had an operation outside the state.

Nichhafa’s younger brother claims that, in spite of her family’s strong objections, Taur Ali had been putting pressure on Nichhafa to get money to pay for her medical bills. Nichhafa was tortured mercilessly when Taur Ali forced her to return home.

Their three sons are devastated by the unfortunate event, especially the two younger ones who are still at home, while the oldest son is currently abroad in Bengaluru looking for work. The local community has denounced Taur Ali’s conduct as cruel and barbaric, and they are calling for a prompt and serious punishment for him.

The locals’ collective sorrow and rage are reflected in the growing calls for Taur Ali’s arrest and severe punishment.

</excerpt>

The Health Department of Tripura is preparing to initiate door-to-door surveillance in remote regions across the state to curb malaria cases, as stated by an official. Top officials involved in malaria management have been directed to conduct intensive detection and treatment drives.

Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the Health Department of Tripura, told ANI, “The health department of Tripura will soon start door-to-door surveillance for the detection of malaria in remote pockets of the state.” He mentioned visiting North Tripura and Dhalai districts, where strategies to combat malaria during the upcoming monsoon season were discussed with Chief Medical Officers and district malaria officers.

Gitte elaborated, “Door-to-door surveillance, rapid testing and treatment, use of larvivorous fish, preventive medicinal doses, a special focus on jhumia families, and health camps in villages that are endemic to malaria are some of the key points that had been discussed in detail during the meeting.”

Previously, the Health Secretary conducted a video conference with all eight District Magistrates to review and enhance the government’s malaria prevention action plan. This initiative is timely as the monsoon season, which often sees an increase in vector-borne diseases, approaches.

An official source noted that despite the rising number of malaria cases in Tripura, with over a thousand patients, adequate treatment facilities are being provided in remote areas. The meeting also addressed the swift release of larvivorous fish into reservoirs, the distribution of around nine and a half lakh long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), and the strategic application of larvicides. These efforts are part of a comprehensive strategy to reduce the mosquito population and prevent malaria outbreaks.

The National Health Mission’s (NHM) Tripura branch has already started preparing to tackle malaria. Health Secretary Gitte visited North Tripura and Dhalai districts on May 14 and 15, engaging with hospital authorities, local residents, and public representatives to gather insights and direct ground-level efforts. She emphasized the importance of raising awareness through health camps and door-to-door visits in malaria-prone areas.

On May 15, a critical meeting was held by the Health Secretary with NHM Mission Director Rajib Dutta, Joint Director Binay Bhushan Das, Malaria State Programme Officer Dr. Abhijit Das, and other key officials, including Chief Medical Officers, District Malaria Officers, and consultants. The meeting highlighted the need for increased spraying and fogging operations, enhanced malaria testing, especially among children and pregnant women, and raising public awareness about the disease.
