International traffic led the growth, up 8.8%. Despite challenges like high airfares and economic uncertainty, passenger numbers exceeded expectations.
</excerpt>

European airports returned to record passenger volumes in 2022 and exceeded pre-Covid volumes for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, with 2024 traffic somewhat behind at 2.5 billion passengers, a 7.4% rise from 2021 according to preliminary data from Airports Council International (ACI) Europe.1.8% (600 airports in 55 countries) of this total was higher than 2019 figures, which reflects a healthy recovery in Western Europe to Central Asia and Israel.

Most of the growth came from international passenger traffic, which grew by 8.8%, while domestic travel increased by 2.5% but remained below pre-pandemic levels.“Europe’s airports welcomed an additional 200 million passengers last year, with many surpassing their previous historic records, stated ACI Europe’s Director General Olivier Jankovec.

At the same time, he admitted that around half of European airfields had not yet caught up with pre-Covid traffic condition for the year 2024. “We are now in a multi-speed European airport market where competitive pressures just keep rising,” he added. Challenges notwithstanding, including high airfares, residual supply constraint, relatively slow GDP growth and geopolitical instability, ACI Europe is projecting 4% increase in passenger traffic this year, though this will be carefully monitored against the backdrop of global political and economic uncertainties.

The exchange began with a post on X, featuring a map and the caption: “You can drive for 149 hours across Russia and still be in Russia.” In a witty reply, the woman quipped: “You […]
</excerpt>

A Bengaluru woman recently made waves on social media by humorously comparing the city’s notorious traffic to Russia’s 149-hour-long drive. The exchange began with a post on X, featuring a map and the caption: “You can drive for 149 hours across Russia and still be in Russia.”

In a witty reply, the woman quipped: “You can do that in Bangalore traffic too.”

Take a look at the post:

You can do that in Bangalore traffic too https://t.co/8xmZeBYd09

— Anagha (@Anaghzzz) November 13, 2024

Mixed Reactions On Social Media

The humorous comparison struck a chord with many, amassing over one million views and thousands of likes and reshares. Bengaluru residents chimed in with their own anecdotes about enduring long commutes, agreeing with the lighthearted take on their daily struggles.

However, not all reactions were positive. Some users criticized the remark, finding it unnecessary. One person commented: “Not always the jokes are good, this attitude must stop. If that was the case, you could not have posted by sitting in a four-walled room. It’s not different from any other city, and bringing any Indian city into this by Indians is unwarranted.”

Defenders of Bengaluru

Many users came to Bengaluru’s defense, highlighting the city’s advantages over other global metropolises. A user remarked: “Bengaluru is way better than Paris, London, Dhaka, Jakarta.” Others pointed out that the city’s traffic is unfairly criticized, with one user arguing: “Why always degrade Bangalore? Did you travel in other cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Poona? Bengaluru traffic is much more controlled than any other city’s traffic. Good and check.”

Not everyone appreciated the humor, with some labeling the comparison as over the top. A user from Tamil Nadu challenged the claim, saying: “Okay, show me how you can drive for 149 hours and still be in Bengaluru. Such fringe, stale jokes should stop. You can drive even for 200 hours within any city.”

While some dismissed the joke as an “exaggeration,” the viral post has reignited debates around Bengaluru’s traffic reputation, offering both humor and criticism in equal measure.

</excerpt>

During a recent trip to Venice, Mumbai-based industrialist Anand Mahindra encountered an amusingly familiar situation—a traffic jam. Known for its stunning landscapes, Venice surprised Mahindra with a boat traffic jam that reminded him of Mumbai’s streets, though he found it much less stressful.

Sharing the experience on the social media platform X, Mahindra posted a video of boats navigating a narrow canal and humorously likened it to Mumbai’s notorious traffic congestion. He wrote, “Traveled all the way to Venice only to run into a Mumbai-style traffic jam! (Ok, I admit this traffic pile-up is less stressful).”

The post quickly sparked reactions from users. One person commented, “In monsoons, you can visit Delhi instead of Venice. You will get a similar experience at a fraction of the cost.” Another user shared, “That’s a humorous way to put it! It’s funny how certain experiences, like traffic jams, can be so universally familiar, even in a city as picturesque as Venice. And it’s good to know that this one is a bit more relaxing!”

Despite the lighthearted take, many users expressed admiration for Venice’s serene beauty. One remarked, “No honking, no pollution, I’d take this any day.” Another simply added, “It is a great place to visit.”

Starting August 3, heavy goods vehicles will be banned from city roads in Bangalore during peak hours on Saturdays to reduce traffic congestion. This new regulation aims to ease the flow of traffic and enhance the overall commuting experience for residents and visitors.

The decision comes after numerous complaints about the severe traffic jams that plague the city, particularly on weekends when the number of vehicles on the road increases significantly. The Bangalore government expects that this measure will not only improve traffic conditions but also reduce pollution levels and contribute to a cleaner, more pleasant urban environment.

Heavy goods vehicles will need to plan their schedules accordingly, ensuring that deliveries and other activities involving large vehicles are completed outside the restricted hours. Authorities will monitor the situation and may adjust the regulations as needed to optimize traffic flow and address any unforeseen challenges.

The ban will specifically target peak traffic hours, which have been identified as 8 AM to 10 AM and 4 PM to 6 PM. During these times, the presence of HGVs on city roads significantly contributes to traffic jams, delays, and increased risks of accidents. By restricting their movement during these critical periods, city planners aim to create a smoother traffic flow and a safer environment for all road users.

To ensure compliance with the new regulation, city authorities will deploy additional traffic enforcement personnel during the specified peak hours. Signage will be installed at key entry points to the city, informing drivers of the restrictions. Violators may face fines and other penalties to encourage adherence to the new rules.

As the regulation comes into effect on August 3, city planners and residents alike will be watching closely to gauge its impact. If successful, this initiative could serve as a model for other cities facing similar challenges, demonstrating that thoughtful regulation and strategic planning can lead to meaningful improvements in urban living.

The Bengaluru-Mangaluru highway has faced multiple landslips in recent weeks, causing significant chaos and disrupting the flow of vehicles and goods in the region. A major landslide at Shiradi Ghat near Doddathople in Sakleshpur has caused severe disruptions on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway.

In this recent incident, a landslide occurred on the Shiradi Ghat section of National Highway 75, involving a car, lorry, and gas tanker. The collapse resulted in a complete halt of vehicle movement and extensive roadblocks. While no fatalities have been reported, minor injuries are suspected.

The landslide is also expected to delay train services between Bengaluru and Mangaluru by up to 15 days. The railway tracks between Edakumeri and Kadagaralli along the Shiradi Ghat have been severely damaged, leading to train cancellations and reroutes. Repair work is underway, but officials estimate it will take about 15 days to fully restore the tracks. The road obstruction necessitates the use of train wagons to transport repair equipment, with two engines hauling wagons filled with rocks and materials. Over 750 workers are manually moving supplies to the damaged area.

Emergency officials are on-site, working to clear the debris. However, traffic disruptions are anticipated to last for approximately six hours.

</excerpt>

The transformation of Bengaluru into India’s IT capital has brought a massive influx of workers to the Karnataka city. Over the decades, the city’s infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with the growing population, resulting in significant challenges. Among the most visible signs of this strain are Bengaluru’s notorious traffic jams.

Every day, the city grapples with severe traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours. Factors such as rapid urbanization, inadequate urban planning, and limited public transportation options contribute to the daily gridlock that plagues the city’s roads.

In light of this, a Bengaluru-based CEO has proposed an innovative solution borrowed from China to alleviate the traffic woes. Serial entrepreneur Paras Chopra shared a screenshot of a news article describing how commuters in Beijing can call for a ‘rescue’ when stuck in traffic. For a fee of $60, a service will dispatch two individuals: one to pick up the stranded commuter on a motorbike, and another to drive their car to the destination.

Chopra shared this idea on the social media platform X, urging Bengaluru entrepreneurs to consider developing a similar service. “Bangalore founders, drop that SaaS idea and build this instead,” he wrote.

Social Media Reacts

The suggestion sparked considerable interest and amusement among X users. While some lauded the idea, others expressed skepticism about its feasibility in Bengaluru’s chaotic traffic.

“Best startup idea,” commented Debonkar, founder of GoToGrowth.

Another user, Sankalp, highlighted the potential but also the challenges: “Here’s a potential startup idea for major cities, but the main concern is establishing a trust-based framework. However, insurance companies may come into play by introducing a new insurance section.”

Skepticism about the cost-effectiveness of such a service was also prevalent. One user predicted, “Indians are way too price sensitive lol. Will sit in traffic 3 hrs rather than spend 1000rs to get rescued.”

Another user humorously noted, “Except that you will be stuck on motorbike instead.”

Amidst the reactions, at least one person claimed to have already tried a similar hack: “I’ve done this so many times, here in Bangalore. Very fun, just book Uber.”

As Bengaluru continues to seek solutions to its traffic issues, innovative ideas like Chopra’s may provide a fresh perspective on how to navigate the city’s congested roads.

Delhi NCR is witnessing intense rainfall for the last two days and it has brought a noticeable change in the temperature. The rains will continue in the coming days as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), India.
The continuous showers have waterlogged many areas causing traffic jams in Delhi, Gurugram, and Noida regions.
The minimum temperature in Delhi, on Friday is supposed to be 23 degrees and the maximum temperature is predicted to be 28 degrees.
Concerning the waterlogged roads and intense traffic jams, the Gurugram administration issued an advisory asking private and corporate offices to work from home, while schools and colleges remained closed on Friday to avoid the hassle.
There has been a dip of seven degrees in the temperature in the NCR regions, making people feel the chill, especially during the night.
Even the air quality has improved so much in the city, according to the data from the Central Pollution Control Board. The AQI on Friday morning stood at 50, which is considered ‘very good.’

A massive traffic jam was reported on the Jaipur-Delhi carriageway of the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway on Wednesday morning due to the closure of one carriageway of the Hero Honda Chowk (HHC).

There was a five-kilometre-long queue of vehicles stretching from the junction to the Cloverleaf flyover due to traffic congestion.

Commuters are taking 45 minutes to cross the 4.7km stretch, which normally takes them 10 minutes.

The situation has not changed since 8:45 a.m. when peak morning traffic hours began.

Traffic police in Gurugram diverted vehicles heading towards Delhi from the toll bypass road located 3 kilometres before the Kherki Daula toll plaza via the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), Sohna Road, and Golf Course Extension Road.

Traffic police officials advised commuters coming from Jaipur to take the toll bypass road to Delhi until the situation stabilised.

According to Gurugram traffic police officials, the service lanes are not equipped to handle the high volume of vehicles, causing heavy congestion along the five-kilometre stretch.

“The service lanes aren’t being able to sustain the large volume of vehicles, we have started diverting vehicles through the toll bypass road and via the arterial lanes located before HHC wherever possible,” said a senior Gurugram traffic police official.

According to traffic police officials, vehicle movement on the opposite carriageway, from Delhi to Jaipur, was largely unaffected.

Despite the fact that traffic officers issued a public advisory about the carriageway closure and route diversion on Tuesday, many residents said they were unaware of the changes.

“It took me over 40minutes to cross the HHC congestion. Traffic is moving at a snail’s pace. If I had known about its closure, I would have taken the toll bypass road to head to the office,” said Rahul Sinha, who works in sector 30.

The 1.4-kilometre-long carriageway of the HHC flyover was closed for six days beginning Wednesday due to a span load test work binge carried out along the stretch by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

The carriageway has developed two large holes since April 2018. The test is being carried out to determine whether the corrective measures were effective and whether the carriageway could withstand a heavy load of vehicle movement.

Commuters from Jaipur to Delhi must use the service roads of National Highway (NH) 48 instead of the flyover.
