Passionate about refugee advocacy, she’s also the first Qatari woman to summit Everest, K2, and Makalu.
</excerpt>

Just days after Qatari royal and accomplished mountaineer Sheikha Asma Al Thani conquered Nanga Parbat in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appointed her as the country’s brand ambassador for mountains and tourism. Sharif also extended his congratulations on X (formerly Twitter), describing her feat as an inspiration.

Her achievement sends a powerful message of courage and determination and stands as a testament to the enduring friendship between Pakistan and Qatar,” his message stated.

I am pleased to appoint Her Highness Sheikha Asma Al Thani as the Brand Ambassador for Pakistan’s Mountains and Tourism.

My heartfelt felicitations to Her Highness on her recent feat of scaling Nanga Parbat. It is truly inspiring!

Who is Sheikha Asma Al Thani?

Sheikha Asma Al Thani, a keen mountaineer and a member of Qatar’s royal family, is the Director of Marketing and Communications in the Qatar Olympic Committee. She has paved the way for Qatari women in the field of sports and is honored to be the first Qatari woman to climb Mount Everest.

In addition to mountaineering, she also actively promotes refugees through her collaboration with the UNHCR. Looking back on her 2022 Everest ascent, she wrote, “As I was pushing my limits to reach the top, I couldn’t help but think of the millions of refugees who embark on dangerous journeys to reach safety. More than 100 million people around the world have been forced out of their homes by conflict, violence, and persecution. An alarming reality and a sad milestone we never wanted to reach.”

She recently joined a milestone when she scaled the summit of Nanga Parbat, the infamous Killer Mountain in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region, standing tall at 8,126 metres. Renowned for its hazardous terrain, it’s one of the most difficult mountains to climb in the world.

Prior to this, Sheikha Asma had already climbed towering peaks such as K2, Makalu, and Everest. In every expedition, she has hoisted the UNHCR flag to highlight the plight of the refugees. As she once said, “Every time I hoist the UNHCR flag on a summit, I think of the over 120 million people across the globe who’ve had to leave their homes.”

</excerpt>

The latest terror attack in Pahalgam has given a deadly blow to Kashmir Tourism, wrecking its reputation as a serene retreat and favorite holiday destination. Militants attacked tourists in this picturesque district on April 22, 2025, killing 26 and injuring several others.

Famous for its serene valleys and stunning beauty, Pahalgam is now the site of horror. The attack undermines Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to boost Kashmir Tourism and turn the region into an economically resilient tourist hub.

Modi’s Tourism Vision Faces Major Setback

Under Narendra Modi’s leadership, Kashmir saw a tourism boom. The government worked to improve infrastructure and security, which attracted millions of visitors. In 2024, Kashmir welcomed a record 3 million tourists, compared to just 831,000 in 2018. Modi’s administration showcased this success as one of its key achievements.

The current attack, nonetheless, has come to interrupt such progress. Following reports of violence, tourists moved to vacate Kashmir. A rush for return flights created temporary shortages, thus a hike in ticket prices that saw the government step in and order airlines from overcharging clients.

Crippling Blow to Domestic Economy

The attack severely impacted the tourism industry. Local businesses, including taxi services, hotels, and shops, now face significant losses. Shakir Ahmed, who manages a taxi union in Pahalgam, said all 30 of their vehicles are sitting idle. “The streets are suddenly empty,” he added. “We’re losing everything.”

Tourism businesses reported massive cancellations, especially with the busy summer season about to begin. A local travel agent revealed they had to cancel 90% of upcoming bookings. The loss of revenue will have lasting effects on the region’s economy, which relies heavily on tourism.

Effect on J&K’s Whole Tourism Economy

The effect of this attack goes beyond Pahalgam. Tourism is the economic backbone of Jammu and Kashmir, and a huge section of its people depend on tourism-related businesses and employment. The state had achieved great progress in overcoming the period of violence and instability, and record numbers of tourists were pouring into the valley.

But with this latest attack, there is indeed a fear that the tourist influx will slow considerably. With tourists cancelling reservations and refusing to visit the area, other tourist areas such as Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Sonmarg could also be adversely affected.

All the tourism-related industries—hotels, travel operators, and local craftsmen—will take a hit, exacerbating the economic woes of the region.

Modi’s Kashmir Vision in Jeopardy

Modi’s goal of transforming Kashmir into a thriving tourist hub now faces a major challenge. Despite improvements in infrastructure and security, the attack has reminded everyone of the region’s vulnerability. It also raises questions about the government’s decision to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special autonomy in 2019. Despite claims of stability, the region continues to suffer from violence.

This tragedy raises questions about the government’s capacity to provide the peace and security required to bring in tourists and investors alike. Kashmir’s image as a peaceful tourist paradise now stands in jeopardy.

Restoring Trust and Security

To recover, the government needs to put security first and rebuild public confidence. Tourists should feel secure, and residents should experience visible benefits to their lives. The government needs to move swiftly to avoid more attacks and get the population safe.

Kashmiris have proved that in the midst of adversity, they remain resolute. In spite of the attack, hospitality remains a way of life for many. Local legislator Sajjad Lone denounced the assault, emphasizing that the welcome culture must continue in Kashmir.

Although the attack has put the valley into mourning, it also reflects the resilience of the people here. Kashmir’s focus on tourism and its economy, which are at stake, rely on the restoration of security and trust.

</excerpt>

Deputy Chief Minister and Tourism Minister Diya Kumari said in the assembly on Tuesday that a mobile app will soon be launched by the state government to provide all necessary facilities to tourists. The app will allow tourists to access information about the nearest police stations, hospitals, tourist attractions, transport options, and other essential details.

She mentioned that Tourist Assistance Force (TAF) booths have been set up at Jantar-Mantar, Jal Mahal, Amer, Hawa Mahal, and Albert Hall to assist tourists and provide them with necessary support. The TAF takes action regularly and ensures that tourists receive proper assistance. She informed the assembly that in 2022, TAF responded to 236 complaints, 311 in 2023, and 541 in 2024. Last year, action was taken against 170 touts in Jaipur. To ensure tourists’ convenience, the state government increased the number of TAF employees from 139 to 250 in December 2024. The Tourism Minister made these statements while responding to supplementary questions asked by MLA Balmukund Acharya during the Question Hour. She emphasised that it is the priority of the state government to develop and preserve the tourist destinations of the state. In this regard, the state government allocated a budget of Rs 100 crores for the development of the walled city of Jaipur in 2024-25.

Leader Of Opposition Questions Food Security Figures In Assembly

During the Question Hour, MLA Anita Bhadel asked about the applications received under the food security scheme in Ajmer city. In response, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sumit Godara stated that 5,512 applications had been received, of which more than 1,000 had been approved, and 3,680 applications were still pending. In a supplementary question, Anita Bhadel asked what would happen to the remaining applications. Godara assured that the Chief Minister had instructed that no one should be deprived of food security. He also mentioned that the portal had been opened on January 26, and new names have been added since then. He noted that under the BJP government, 21 lakh 87 thousand new names have been added to the food security list. Following this, Leader of Opposition Tikaram Juli pointed out a discrepancy between the pending applications and the approved ones, asking for clarification. However, the minister could not provide an answer. When the Speaker moved to the next question, Juli remarked that the government had failed to provide a complete answer.

Expansion Work Of RBM Hospital To Be Completed By June: Khinvsar

Medical Education Minister Gajendra Singh Khinvsar, while answering questions during the Question Hour, confirmed that the expansion work of RBM Hospital in Bharatpur will be completed by June this year. He assured that after the completion of construction, vacant posts will be filled, and super-specialty facilities will be introduced. He also mentioned that a penalty would be imposed on the contractor for the delay in construction. The financial approval for the expansion was Rs 154.62 crores, of which Rs 123.20 crores has already been paid. The construction work was supposed to begin on December 17, 2021, and finish by June 2023. However, the contractor started the work on December 27, 2021, and failed to meet the original deadline. The contractor has now been asked to complete the work by June 30, 2025. A penalty of Rs 30 lakh was imposed on the contractor on February 28, 2025, for the delay. The minister stated that a committee would be formed to decide on any further penalties.

10% Increase In Ration Dealers’ Commission: Godara

Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sumit Godara informed the assembly that the commission for ration dealers has been increased by 10% in the current year’s budget. This increase aligns with the Chief Minister’s motto of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.” Ration dealers will now receive a commission of Rs 150.70 per quintal, up from the previous rate of Rs 137 per quintal.

Land Marking Process For Transfer Of Central Jail Underway: Bedam

Minister of State for Home Jawahar Singh Bedam announced that the process of marking land for the transfer of Central Jail Jaipur from the densely populated area is underway. The department has written to the District Collector for land identification. He assured the House that once the land is identified, steps will be taken to shift prisoners to the new location. The current capacity of Central Jail Jaipur is 1,173, but the number of prisoners has reached 1,751. To manage the overcrowding, prisoners are sent to other prisons as needed. Bedam made these remarks in response to supplementary questions posed by MLA Kalicharan Saraf during the Question Hour.

The forum also saw the release of the IFC Document Reference Guide for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Projects. This guide offers valuable insights into various business models for processing municipal solid waste, including innovative waste-to-electricity, biomethanation, and bioremediation techniques. It provides municipalities and private-sector players with the tools to implement economically viable and sustainable waste management solutions.

Another significant development at the forum was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). This partnership aims to foster scientific research and innovative technologies to improve urban waste management across India, facilitating a more efficient approach to handling waste in cities.

In addition, the event saw the release of ‘India’s Circular Sutra: A Compendium of Best Practices in 3R & Circular Economy’, which showcases successful case studies and best practices in the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) framework. This document provides valuable insights to urban local bodies and stakeholders working to implement circular economy solutions.

It will serve as a celebration of the region’s cultural wealth while focusing on its strategic importance in India’s future development. The festival has been conceptualized as an annual event that will continue to honor the diversity and cultural richness of Northeast India, propelling the region towards further economic advancement.

To promote economic opportunities in areas such as traditional handicrafts, handlooms, agricultural products, and tourism, the Mahotsav will feature a variety of events. The festival will have artisan exhibitions, Grameen haats, state-specific pavilions, and technical sessions on key areas crucial to the development of the northeastern region.

The Mahotsav will also emphasize the significance of infrastructure development in Northeast India and its transformative impact. The region’s improved connectivity, industrial growth, and ongoing development in sectors like transport, energy, and digital infrastructure are poised to enhance its strategic role in India’s growth story and open new opportunities for trade and business.

Key events will include investor roundtables and buyer-seller meets designed to be a unique opportunity to build and strengthen networks, partnerships, and joint initiatives boosting the economic growth of the region.

</excerpt>

An Indian tourist’s recent trip to Singapore has challenged the city-state’s reputation for expensive dining. Subi, who spent a week there, discovered that the prices of cafes and restaurants in Singapore are comparable to those in Mumbai. Taking to social media platform X, she expressed her surprise, writing, “Was in Singapore for a week and I was shocked to see how Mumbai is SO expensive when it comes to nice cafes/restaurants and going out.”

Her post sparked a lively discussion online about the cost of living in the two cities and the underlying factors. Some users highlighted the disparity in purchasing power parity as a key reason. One user explained, “It’s because of the inequality that even little things like grabbing a coffee from a cafe is a ‘luxury’ that costs 450 rupees while most of us don’t make as much as our developed country counterparts to make these expenses make sense.”

was in Singapore for a week and I shook how mumbai is SO expensive when it comes to nice cafes/restaurants and going out, coffee, ubers, experiences etc. like Singapore was just as/very slightly more expensive as most restaurants in bandra and that’s absolutely insane

— subiii (@_subiii_) November 15, 2024

Others blamed the high cost of dining out in Indian cities on classism and inflated rents. “Indian cities are insanely overpriced for everything. I feel like it’s a combo of crazy high rents in India inflating everything & classism – people want to be gated away from most of society,” commented another user.

Subi, however, offered a counterpoint, pointing out that despite Singapore’s significantly higher rents, its cafe prices remain on par with those in Mumbai. She wrote, “I agree but it’s not just that. Singapore rents are 20x that and they still charge the same for a coffee. In India, we premium-ize everything because of classism and we want to keep everyone away.”

This ongoing conversation has brought attention to the socio-economic factors shaping the cost of leisure activities in urban centers like Mumbai and Singapore.

Several Indian tourists have recently shared troubling accounts of harassment and exploitation by what they call the “Goa taxi mafia,” spurring a conversation about the state’s tourism decline. This discussion emerged after CEIC Data revealed that foreign tourist numbers in Goa remain significantly below pre-Covid levels, with only 1.5 million foreign visitors in 2023, down from 8.5 million in 2019. Ramanuj Mukherjee, an X user, shared the data, adding, “Tourism in Goa is down in the dumps. Foreign tourists have abandoned the state already. Look at 2019 vs. 2023 numbers.” Mukherjee’s post quickly went viral, receiving over 2 million views and sparking heated debate among social media users.

Tourist Decline Linked to ‘Taxi Mafia’ and Overpriced Services

Locals and tourists alike have voiced concerns about Goa’s taxi services, which many describe as monopolized and exploitative. Many tourists recounted experiences of being threatened or overcharged, often without alternative transportation options. One X user, Madhur, shared how he was harassed by a group of taxi drivers when he tried to pick up a German friend from Benaulim Beach. “They stopped us, and soon there were more than 10 drivers ready to beat us up,” he wrote, adding that his German friend was charged ₹1,800 for a 37-kilometer ride.

HAVE A LOOK AT THE VIRAL POST:

Tourism in Goa is down in dumps

Foreign tourists have abandoned the state already. Look at 2019 v 2023 numbers. Russians and Brits who used to visit annually have opted for Sri Lanka instead.

Indian tourists still visiting, but soon likely to ditch it as word spreads about… pic.twitter.com/RF2TLC2Zvi

— Ramanuj Mukherjee (@law_ninja) November 5, 2024

Others, like fitness influencer Chirag Barjatya, reported being forced to abandon foreign friends whom they had offered rides, as local taxi drivers aggressively demanded they leave their passengers or risk damage to their vehicle. These experiences have left many tourists disenchanted with Goa and contemplating other destinations.

Alternatives Abroad Gain Favor Among Tourists

Rising travel costs and reports of harassment are prompting Indian tourists to explore other options. Many noted that countries like Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam offer similar experiences at more affordable rates, better services, and easier transportation. The situation worsened after Goa’s taxi unions resisted ride-hailing services such as Ola and Uber, leading to an absence of competition and higher taxi fares.

Social media users highlighted that a flight from Mumbai to Goa could cost less than a local taxi ride in Goa. “I paid ₹2,000 for a flight ticket from Mumbai to Goa in 2018 but had to pay ₹2,500 for a taxi from Goa Airport to Arambol,” one user recalled.

Shifting Tourism Trends: A Growing Preference for Southeast Asia

Many travelers now prioritize Southeast Asia over Goa, finding destinations like Thailand and Vietnam to be more cost-effective, especially as Thailand recently removed visa requirements for Indian tourists. “With Thailand making it visa-free for Indians, it’s going to be worse for Goa,” one user noted, while others mentioned how improved transportation, lower costs, and better-preserved beaches made Southeast Asia more attractive.

With increasing tourism in Southeast Asia and ongoing concerns about Goa’s local practices, experts believe that Goa’s tourism sector may continue to suffer unless significant changes are made. Local authorities may need to reconsider transportation regulations and tourism standards to compete in an evolving tourism landscape.

</excerpt>

Myanmar’s famous ancient tourist spot, temple city, under severe economic crisis due to decline in tourist activities. The domes and spires of Bagan, Myanmar’s temple city, are famous amongst tourists . However, the ongoing conflict has resulted in reduction of tourist visits, leaving local residents with financial hardships. While ago, Bagan’s UNESCO World Heritage site gained fame after Myanmar began opening up to the world following decades of military rule relaxation in 2011. Tourists seeking an alternative to the more frequented destinations in Southeast Asia were excited to explore its ancient temples and cultural treasures along the banks of the Ayeyarwady River. Now, with fewer visitors due to the instability, businesses that depend on tourism are struggling , underscoring the economic impact of the crisis on the local community.

In February 2021, the tourism industry in Myanmar faced successive blows, first from the devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic and then from the military coup, which plunged the country into widespread conflict. These events have severely affected tourism across Myanmar, including its famous destination, Bagan. Before these crises, Myanmar had been gradually opening up to international visitors following decades of military rule, with tourism numbers increasing. However, in the year following the coup, international visitor arrivals decreased dramatically to around 200,000, as reported by the junta’s tourism ministry. This starkly contrasts with figures from five years earlier, when Myanmar had welcomed 3.4 million international tourists.

The sharp decline underscores the profound impact of political instability and conflict on the tourism sector, leaving local businesses and communities in Bagan and beyond struggling to cope with the economic fallout. People are concerned due to sudden fall in economy.

“We are struggling,” expressed a flower seller at one of the pagodas, reflecting on the challenging circumstances. “Despite this, we are grateful to still have homes and food on our tables. I can sense the widespread suffering experienced by people in other regions.” Their heartfelt wish, shared by many, is for the country’s situation to improve and for economic opportunities to return. They hope for a brighter future where livelihoods can be restored, echoing the collective aspiration of the community amidst these trying times.

</excerpt>

About 2,000 tourists stranded in north Sikkim’s Lachung and Chungthang due to heavy rainfall-triggered landslides and floods will be evacuated by Sunday, according to a senior official. The inclement weather has caused extensive damage in Mangan district, claiming six lives and disrupting road connectivity, power, food, and mobile networks. Of the stranded tourists, approximately 1,200 are domestic, with others hailing from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Thailand.

Sikkim’s chief secretary, Vijay Bhushan Pathak, stated, “There is no major destruction in Lachung, Lachen, and Chungthang. We have sent a requisition for the air force and helicopter. Once the weather improves, we will evacuate the tourists.” The state’s principal secretary of tourism and civil aviation, C S Rao, assured that the stranded tourists, including foreigners, were safe with access to food and water. If required, they will be evacuated by road.

Mangan District Magistrate Hem Kumar Chettri expressed hope that the tourists would be evacuated by Sunday, contingent on weather conditions. A relief camp has been set up at Pakshep, and while electricity has been restored, mobile networks remain down. The Met office has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and northeast India over the next 4-5 days.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang chaired a high-level meeting to assess the situation, urging stranded tourists to remain in their current locations and avoid unnecessary risks. Landslides have blocked roads, houses have been inundated or damaged, and electricity poles swept away due to the heavy rain. The chief minister’s meeting was aimed at strategizing and coordinating the response to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of residents.

</excerpt>

Venice unveiled a novel plan on Thursday to levy fees on day-trippers entering the historically rich Italian city, a groundbreaking move aimed at alleviating the strain of overtourism. Despite this intention, many locals are against the idea. Those wishing to explore the UNESCO World Heritage site for the day are required to purchase a five-euro ($5.3) ticket, with inspectors conducting random checks at key entry points.

Renowned as one of the most exquisite cities globally, Venice stands as a prime tourist destination but grapples with overwhelming crowds. Simone Venturini, the local councilor overseeing tourism, reported the sale of around 10,000 tickets by the scheme’s commencement at 8:30 am (0630 GMT) on Thursday.

The “Venice Access Fee,” piloted on 29 peak days throughout 2024, primarily weekends from May to July, aims to encourage day-trippers to visit during off-peak hours. Overnight guests, already subject to a tourist tax, and minors below 14 are exempt from this fee.

Opinions on the initiative are divided. Some, like Sylvain Pelerin, a French tourist with over 50 years of visits to Venice, see it positively, hoping it will regulate tourist numbers. However, dissenters, like Marina Dodino from the local residents association ARCI, argue it infringes on the fundamental right to freedom of movement.

Mayor Luigi Brugnaro frames the initiative as an experiment with lenient enforcement measures to avoid queues and disruptions. Inspectors can issue fines ranging from 50 to 300 euros ($53 to $320) to those without tickets, although no penalties are expected initially.

Venice’s UNESCO World Heritage status has been threatened due to mass tourism and rising water levels attributed to climate change. The city’s capacity is stretched as 100,000 visitors stay overnight in a center housing just 50,000 residents. The influx of day-trippers, often from cruise ships, further strains resources.

The introduction of the ticketing system was a response to UNESCO’s warnings and reflects efforts to strike a balance between tourism revenue and the well-being of residents. Despite uncertainties about its impact, the hope is that it will encourage regional Italians to avoid busy days, thus easing the burden on the city.

The tourism sector provides a blend of cultural immersion, spiritual sanctuaries, and coastal leisure activities. Additionally, hospitality services, eco-tourism ventures, and cultural festivities cater to the varied interests of visitors.

As the electoral process progresses, with voting for all 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and the Puducherry constituency set for the first phase on April 19, the call for significant transformation in Puducherry’s tourism scene appears to be gaining momentum.

Antony, employed in hospitality services, highlighted parking as a major concern in Puducherry. Drawing from his own encounters, he expressed the difficulty in finding suitable parking spaces. He emphasized the need for local candidates to prioritize addressing this issue.

A taxi driver echoed similar sentiments, expressing frustration over the struggle to find parking amidst the influx of tourists frequenting popular attractions.

Operators of rental bike services noted several traffic issues in Puducherry, including urban congestion, inadequate infrastructure, limited parking facilities, and insufficient public transportation options. One operator highlighted that narrow streets in the older parts of the city exacerbate traffic jams, particularly during peak hours.

Manikandan, employed in a guest house, further emphasized that the rising vehicle count aggravates congestion and pollution levels. He outlined efforts to mitigate these concerns, such as enhancing road networks, encouraging alternative transportation methods, and upgrading public transport services to diminish dependence on private vehicles.

Kartik, a tourist, expressed his intention to vote for development, emphasizing the importance of electing individuals committed to progress and advancement.

Pilgrims are able to register on the official website starting April 15 to visit the sacred shrines.

The Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand involves a pilgrimage to four sacred temples: Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. This year, the Char Dham Yatra is set to commence on May 10, with the opening of Gangotri, Yamunotri, and Kedarnath shrines. The Badrinath shrine will open its doors on May 12.

The Char Dham Yatra is deeply significant in Hinduism, typically taking place from April or May to October or November. Recently, Chamoli District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana inspected the preparations at Badrinath Dham for the upcoming Char Dham Yatra.

The District Magistrate directed the officials to ensure that sewer line repairs, enhancements of internal pathways, and provisions for water, electricity, street lighting, and vehicle parking are completed before the commencement of the Yatra. Additionally, appropriate signage should be installed to facilitate passenger convenience.

The high-altitude shrines are closed for about six months annually, opening in the summer months (April or May) and closing as winter approaches (October or November). It is a common belief that the Char Dham Yatra should be undertaken in a clockwise direction, starting at Yamunotri, then proceeding to Gangotri, followed by Kedarnath, and culminating at Badrinath.

The journey may be undertaken by road or air, with helicopter services available. Some pilgrims opt for the ‘Do Dham Yatra,’ a pilgrimage to the two sacred shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath.

In a post on his social media handle, he encouraged tourists to explore Assam’s tea gardens, highlighting their role in enhancing the state’s prestige worldwide.

Assam’s tea gardens are not just known for their tea production but also play a crucial role in the state’s economy, especially in several Assembly constituencies. Producing nearly 700 million kg of tea annually, Assam contributes significantly to India’s overall tea production.

The tea plantation industry in Assam has witnessed a significant transformation, with many small farmers and unemployed youths turning to tea cultivation as a business venture. Some farmers even cultivate tea in their backyards, while others have started their tea businesses through startups.

Visitors to Assam can enjoy unique experiences in the tea gardens, including stays in old-world bungalows with attached golf courses. Some estates even have airstrips for tourists to arrive and depart in chartered aircraft, adding to the charm of the tea garden experience.

This year, tea growers in Assam are celebrating the plantation industry’s 200-year milestone. Renowned for its richly colored and aromatic tea, Assam’s tea industry provides livelihoods to millions and is a significant contributor to the state’s economy. The discovery of wild tea plants in the upper Brahmaputra Valley by Robert Bruce in 1823 marked the beginning of Assam’s tea plantation journey, which has since grown into a thriving industry generating substantial foreign exchange earnings for the state.

</excerpt>

China and Turkey have decided to skip the upcoming G20 meeting in Srinagar. China is not participating due to objections raised by its ally Pakistan, while Turkey has slammed the Indian government for handling the Kashmir issue in recent times.

The G20 summit on tourism will be held on 22, 24 May at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) on the banks of the Dal Lake. This is the first major event to be held in the valley since India abrogated Article 370 in 2019.

China and India, both nations, have been engaged in border conflict since the Galwan Valley clash in 2020, in this incident, 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives, and at least 38 PLA personnel perished by drowning while they were trying to cross a fast-flowing river in darkness.

The Galwan Valley brawl was one of the deadliest quarrels between the armies of two nations in more than four decades.

However, India has overruled Pakistan’s objections to holding the G20 summit in Kashmir. The decision by India to host the G20 summit in Kashmir was deemed “irresponsible” by Pakistan. Pakistan’s foreign ministry stated that “India’s irresponsible move is the latest in a series of self-serving measures to achieve its illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir”.

PM Modi-led Central government has stated that such activities are being planned in all states and union territories ahead of the G20 Summit, which will take place in Delhi in September of this year.

However, Indonesia’s participation in the summit in Kashmir, remains uncertain. Last year, Indonesia presided over the G20.

Meanwhile, ahead of the G-20 summit, security has been beefed up in the Jammu and Kashmir region to prevent any untoward incidents in the state. This year, 10 soldiers and 7 civilians have been killed so far.

The Himachal CM said that apart from opening the entire state for all-season tourism activities, the government is putting its biggest thrust on developing Kangra as the ‘Tourism Capital of the State’. He said that Kangra district has immense tourism potential as it has the beautiful Dhauladhar Mountain, a historical temple, and a scope for adventure activities.

The government, with an aim to promote tourism in this district, is working on strengthening infrastructure, for which Rs 390 crores will be spent by the ADB. He said that the government has already devised blueprints for various projects in the Kangra district that will improve the tourists’ experience besides providing them with modern facilities.

The state government has proposed the construction of an international-standard golf course at Heritage Village Pragpur. There is a plan for beautification of the Palampur area besides constructing a high-end resort, a 24-hour tourism village, a modern roller skating rink, and a wellness centre for the tourists coming to visit Kangra, added the Chief Minister, who informed the government through a release.

Furthermore, the state government has identified 180 hectares of land at Bankhandi to build a modern zoo at a cost of Rs 300 crore, for which the DPR is under process. Efforts are under way to promote adventure tourism by introducing houseboats, cruises, yachts, and water sports activities at Pong Dam, said the Chief Minister.

Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami on Thursday discussed the necessity of Uniform Civil Code for the state. He stated that the UCC is not only essential for Uttarakhand but for the entire country as it promises equality to all. He declared that the government’s committee is working closely with the stakeholders and taking feedback before making the draft, soon after which the law will be implemented

While addressing the India News Manch Conclave, CM Dhami thanked the people of Uttarakhand for breaking the seesaw pattern in the state politics. For many years, Congress and BJP used to rule the state in alternative tenures but in 2022, BJP was re-elected in power.

Dhami, on being asked about his way of interacting with people, said, “In my opinion, we are the representatives of the common people but as we step into politics, generally, a gap occurs between us. So, discussing issues with the people by visiting them gives crucial feedbacks. I am a firm believer of the idea that one can only represent the people by being among the people. We take the feedbacks and try to resolve the common issues as closely as possible.”
He further briefed on the steps the Uttarakhand government is taking to improve the growth of the state’s tourism industry as it is one of the major part of the economy. Dhami said, “We are constantly promoting home-stays and till now more than 4000 home-stays have been registered. This is one of the major sources of living for us. People of other states living in our home-stays will also help them connect with our culture. For better tourism, we are constructing better roads. Under the guidance of PM Modi, connectivity of Uttarakhand with nearby states is improving. Various bypasses and all weather roads are being constructed and the air connectivity is improving.”
CM Dhami denied the Opposition’s claim of Uttarakhand’s declining economy and said, “Opposition needs to say something or the other; we are constantly improving. State’s growth rate has jumped from – 5 to 7.5, that too after Covid. We are gradually succeeding and we aim to be one of India’s most successful states by 2025.”

Detailing the government’s efforts in the field of education, he said, “Our cabinet has decided to issue free books to the students of class 9th -12th. We are among the first few states of the nation to implement the new education policy. We know the importance of education as it will create the future of our youth therefore we are working precisely on the betterment of education opportunities.”

Talking about the challenge of managing the crowd of people as the Char Dham Yatra was reopened after two years; he said that the government is constantly working in the field of health, medical emergency, road connectivity, etc to ensure a better experience for the people.”
He opposed forced religious conversions and said that less educated people easily get brainwashed in such incidents. In Uttarakhand, several such cases came to the light. The government is working on the issue and trying to introduce a law against this. He also ensured the government’s strict actions against love jihad.
Dhami further commented on Kharge’s derogatory comment on PM Modi and said that there is a competition in the opposition on who can use the most derogatory words for PM and it shows their culture. He termed Rahul Gandhi’s comment on soldiers as crime.

There are many unusual and eccentric hotels around the world, from sleeping in an old lighthouse to renting a library book shelf. To compile a list of the most unique hotels in the world, we looked at everything from ice hotels to treehouse lodgings in the rainforest.

Stay in jail

Take a moment to picture yourself spending the night in your own jail cell. Your inmate trip is up to you at the HI Jail Hostel in Ottawa. You have a choice of sleeping in a dormitory with other “prisoners” or selecting a private cell. You’ll be welcomed each morning with breakfast, a free tour of the jail, and, of course, your freedom! You need to spend about $23 per night on dorm accommodations.

Sleep in a bubble

Probably this is one of the most unusual hotel rooms ever. These charming bubble domes are tucked away in Northern Ireland’s lush forest and provide visitors with a genuine haven. On a clear night, the transparent walls provide an uninterrupted 180° view of the trees and the sky, which previous visitors have described as phenomenal. Think about the stargazing! Prices begin at around $275 per night.

Walk in the Dream Land

Designed by architect Javier Sanosiain, this serpent-like structure that snakes through the jungle outside of Mexico City is made up of ten different houses. Since the entire property spans over 5,000 square metres, the image above just represents ONE of those homes. The price per night for this original and eccentric AirBnB is roughly $250.

Stay Underwater

The ultimate vacation extravagance is the underwater room at Manta Resort. Guests get access to both an above-water living area on a private floating island as well as a fully submerged bedroom. It can only be reached by speedboat. And who requires snorkelling? Fish and other wildlife frequently swim up to the bedroom’s windows! It’s a fantastical and enduring experience. Starting prices are $1,700/n.

The Conrad

Millionaires and lottery winners alike won’t have any trouble wasting their money on this opulent stay. The Muraka suite at the Conrad Hotel in the Maldives raises the bar for underwater hotel suites. In addition to having its own chef, butler, and trainer, the underwater glass suite gives visitors the impression that they are sleeping in a private aquarium thanks to its 180-degree views. The Muraka suite’s rates begin at $50,000/n.

Why do we need a vacation? May be to take a break from the standard daily routine which turns out to be monotonous or may be for some stress relief along with relaxation of our mind. Now is the time to relax our lungs, too. We have been seeing news about the rising air pollution leading to the “severe AQI” and the adverse repercussions it might bring. AQI, or air quality index, is an index for reporting on air quality. It is a gauge of how quickly air pollution damages a person’s health. To understand better, an ideal AQI is 0–50. 51–100 is considered satisfactory; 101–200 is moderately polluted; 201-300 is poor; 301–400 is very poor; and 401–500 is severe. Reportedly, the AQI in Delhi has risen to 491—which is “severe.” However, there are areas in the world with low AQIs, making them an excellent travel destination for you.

Zurich, Switzerland (0.51 AQI)

Zurich is known for having pristine air and will be the least polluted city in 2021. It is because of the city’s stringent policy design to limit car emissions, the promotion of cleaner modes of transportation, and the low levels of air pollution. Instead of driving, most people in the city take trains, buses, and subways. Additionally, the city is very committed to garbage management.

Hobart, Australia (2.73 AQI)

For twenty years, the city of Hobart has incorporated sustainability and the effects of the climate into its operations. In order to formulate policies, identify obstacles, and generate possibilities, it has measured and dramatically decreased its energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. In order to cut pollution, the city is focusing on using solar energy for electricity. The city has incorporated autonomous sensor networks into the storm water drainage system to find plastics, cans, and leaves and prevent them from entering the ocean.

Launceston, Australia (3.68 AQI)

Launceston is vulnerable to an inversion layer due to its geographic location, which warms the air. Due to the city’s steep terrain and residents’ accustomed usage of fireplaces and hardwood heaters, Launceston saw high levels of pollution and smoke in the air. Campaigns for community education, the enforcement of environmental regulations, and a programme to replace wood heaters with electric heaters encouraged the use of electric heaters as an alternative, all of which contributed to the reduction of pollution and the city’s ranking as one of the least polluted in 2021.

Honolulu, USA (3.68 AQI)

Though Hawaii suffers from air pollution, Honolulu is the cleanest city in Hawaii. The climatic conditions of the city and its population density help keep the air clean. Relatively fewer heavy industries also contribute to the lesser pollution. However, the solid waste (marine debris) has been increasing in the city, and strategies are being taken to remove the debris.

Bergen, Norway (4.39 AQI)

The Norwegian city of Bergen has beautiful blue skies and panoramic views of the surrounding natural beauties. It is a remote city without any heavy industries that produce high particle pollution and are located in the valleys. However, temperature inversions frequently operate as a lid over the city, trapping all emissions from the vehicles and structures underneath, much like in Launceston and Los Angeles. Wood burners, fireplaces, and powered vehicles all produce these emissions. However, the city’s air quality is at its highest point in recent years thanks to the promotion of electric and zero-emission vehicles as well as the ban on wood furnaces.

After more than two and a half years of border controls, Taiwan lifted all COVID-19 entry restrictions on Thursday, allowing tourists unrestricted access to the self-ruled island. Throughout the pandemic, Hong Kong and Taiwan, along with mainland China, required most visitors to complete a mandatory quarantine period, even as most countries reopened their borders to tourists.

Visitors are no longer required to quarantine or take any PCR tests upon entry. Instead, they must monitor their health for a week after arrival and obtain a negative result on a rapid antigen test the same day. People who want to go out during the weeklong monitoring period must have a negative test result from that day or the day before. There are no longer any restrictions on certain nationalities entering Taiwan.

Dozens of Thai visitors were among the first under the new rules to arrive at Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport, which serves the capital Taipei, on a Tiger Air flight that landed shortly after midnight.Tourists like 32-year-old Mac Chientachakul and his parents were excited to visit the island.“Hot pot is my favorite dish in Taiwan,” Chientachakul said.

“It’s my first thing to do … I miss it so much.”

According to Sonia Chang, a travel agent, the changes benefit both the tourism industry and Taiwanese residents, who can now travel abroad without having to return to quarantine.

Valaisurang Bhaedhayajibh, a 53-year-old design firm’s business development director, described the new rules as “convenient.”“We don’t have to do the test before coming here, and also after arriving,” he said. “We are still required to do the self-test every two days, and everything has been provided” by Taiwanese authorities, including the rapid testing kits. The travellers from Thailand were greeted by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau’s director, Chang Shi-chung, at a welcome ceremony in the Taoyuan airport’s arrival hall, who handed out gifts.

According to Taiwan’s tourism bureau, 244 tourists from 20 tour groups will arrive on Thursday. With Hong Kong and Taiwan lifting restrictions and welcoming back tourists, mainland China remains one of the few places in the world that is adamant about keeping borders closed and adhering to a “zero-COVID” strategy to eradicate the virus.

Late last month, Hong Kong ended its mandatory quarantine policy for inbound travellers, requiring only a three-day self-monitoring period.
