The letter, postmarked from Queenstown, Ireland, is believed to be the only surviving example from Gracie, who later chronicled his experience.
</excerpt>

A lettercard penned on board the Titanic by one of its most well-known survivors, only days before the vessel sank, has been auctioned for 300,000 pounds (about $399,000).

The letter, written by first-class passenger Archibald Gracie on April 10, 1912, was to the great-uncle of the seller. In it, Gracie wrote about the ship: “It is a fine ship but I shall await my journeys end before I pass judgment on her.”

The letter, sold by Henry Aldridge & Son of Wiltshire, England, was bought by a US private collector on Saturday. It went for a much higher price than the pre-sale price of 60,000 pounds.

Take a look at the letter:

Titanic Survivor’s Rare Letter

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge described the letter as an ‘exceptional museum grade piece’. It is the sole known surviving copy of a letter Gracie wrote on board the Titanic, which sank off the coast of Newfoundland after hitting an iceberg, killing around 1,500 people on its maiden voyage.

Gracie had boarded the Titanic in Southampton on 10 April 1912 and remained in first-class cabin C51. After the collision, he jumped into the sea and managed to scramble onto an upturned collapsible boat. He was subsequently rescued by passengers in a lifeboat and brought aboard the R.M.S. Carpathia.

After his rescue, Gracie wrote an account of his terrifying ordeal in the book The Truth about the Titanic, one of the most extensive eyewitness accounts of the tragedy. Gracie never managed to shake the effects of the hypothermia he experienced that evening, though, and died later in 1912 as a result of diabetes complications.

The letter was dated from Queenstown, Ireland, one of the two stops the Titanic had planned to make before it met its unfortunate demise.

</excerpt>

Discoveries about the last hours of the Titanic have been made with a revolutionary full-scale 3D scan of the iconic shipwreck. The computer model, based on more than 700,000 high-definition images, unveils fascinating new information about how the iconic ocean liner disintegrated and sank after colliding with an iceberg in 1912, when over 1,500 people lost their lives.

According to the BBC, the breakthrough scan not only corroborates long-standing survivor accounts but also reveals hitherto unexplored aspects of the tragedy—including the colossal power that ripped the vessel in two and the heroic actions of the engineering team who maintained the power supply right up to the end.

A Full Digital Twin of the Titanic

The digital resuscitation was created for Titanic: The Digital Resurrection, a new National Geographic and Atlantic Productions documentary. Researchers mapped the wreck—3,800 meters beneath the North Atlantic—using underwater robots in painstaking detail. Previously, Titanic expeditions were confined to sparse submersible views. This new simulation provides the first-ever detailed vision of the full wreck.

The bow, remarkably intact, stands upright as though still cruising through the sea. Compared to it, the stern is almost 600 meters away—twisted and distorted from the ship’s violent breakup and plunge into the depths of the sea.

“This is like investigating a crime scene—you want context to be able to figure out what occurred,” said Titanic expert Parks Stephenson. “Having a complete, overall picture of the wreck site is crucial.”

Minor Damage, Catastrophic Outcome

The computer model, combined with new computer simulations, suggests that what sank the “unsinkable” Titanic were a series of seemingly minor punctures—each roughly the size of an A4 sheet of paper. The iceberg allegedly pierced six of the ship’s watertight compartments—beyond the structural limit it was designed to withstand.

One of the scan’s most significant findings is a broken porthole, thought to be the very location of iceberg contact. This fits with several survivor accounts that said ice poured into the cabins in the first collision.

Heroic Engineers Worked to the End

One of the most glaring discoveries is that of the engineering staff of the Titanic. There is an unobstructed look inside one of the gigantic boiler rooms, which is close to the break in the hull. It appears from evidence that the boilers were still in operation even when the ship started to sink. Engineers probably maintained the lights on until the end, which allowed for the safe deployment of additional lifeboats.

“The scan reveals concave boilers and a steam valve on the stern left open,” Stephenson said. “That indicates steam was actively driving the ship’s generators up to the last minute.”

Chief Engineer Joseph Bell and his crew, who all died, helped to keep panic to a minimum and increase the chances of survival for many.

“They gave the crew valuable time to respond—and avoided complete darkness chaos,” said Stephenson. “That open steam valve, stuck in time, is a poignant reminder of their sacrifice.”

Titanic: A Wreck Still Speaking

Stephenson characterizes the Titanic as “the last surviving eyewitness to the disaster” because, as she explains, “the ship still has stories to tell.” Digital rebirth not only does tribute to the victims but advances historical insight into one of the globe’s most tragic sea catastrophes.

With the wreck site now preserved in such vivid detail, researchers and historians hope future generations will continue to learn from the Titanic’s tragic tale—ensuring it is never forgotten.

Choosing love over survival, they held onto each other as the ship met its tragic fate.
</excerpt>

The RMS Titanic slipped on April 15, 1912, as under the icy Atlantic, an unthinkable choice was made Isidor and Ida would die together rather than separate. This wealthy and devoted couple, co-owners of Macy’s, held each other close in their last moments, giving up safety out of love.

Witnesses remembered Isidor’s words to dissuade any member of the crew from seeking safety until every woman and child in sight had been rescued. Ida was said to have disembarked when Isidor refused, saying that she would not leave him alone.

The Forgotten Love Story of the ‘Titanic’

While the Titanic is often remembered for Jack and Rose’s fictional romance, the real tale of Isidor and Ida Strauss is among the ship’s most poignant love stories. James Cameron’s film depicts an elderly couple sitting on their bed as freeze-cold water washes into their cabin. But the real story is somewhat different yet equally tragic.

Eyewitnesses, including Ida’s maid and Isidor’s business colleague, remembered the couple among the first offered places on a lifeboat. However, Isidor would not let himself be rescued unless every woman and child ahead of him had been taken off the ship.

Details of the Love Story

An officer tried to convince him to get on, saying, “Sir, it’s time to go,” in light of his status, but he insisted.

Ida did not want to leave her husband of over 40 years and, stepping back onto the deck, proclaimed, “We have lived a wonderful life together, and if you won’t go, neither will I.”

Ida maintained her mink coat was diving gear for the vessel. Her last words to her maid, Ellen Bird, had been unto her, “I will not need this anymore.”

In a great wave, they were swung together off the ship into the sea.

</excerpt>

Kate Winslet recently opened up about her painful experience with body shaming following the immense success of ‘Titanic’. The actress, who became a global sensation after the 1997 blockbuster, reflected on the harsh and unwarranted remarks about her appearance during her rise to stardom, as reported by Deadline.

In an emotional interview with Deadline, Winslet recalled the criticism she faced about her weight, describing it as “absolutely appalling.” She shared how deeply affected she was by the cruel comments about her dress size, saying, “What kind of a person must they be to do something like that to a young actress who’s just trying to figure it out?”

When asked if she had confronted those responsible for the hurtful remarks, Winslet confirmed that she had. She recounted a powerful moment when she directly addressed her critics: “I did get face-to-face. I let them have it. I said, ‘I hope this haunts you.’”

Reflecting on the confrontation, Winslet said, “It was a great moment because it wasn’t just for me, it was for all those people who were subjected to that level of harassment. It was horrific, it was really bad.”

This candid revelation comes as part of Winslet’s ongoing advocacy for body positivity and self-acceptance. The actress has consistently spoken about her struggles with body image and the pressures of living under the public eye, as well as the toll that scrutiny has taken on her mental health.

In a prior interview, Winslet recounted another instance of body shaming while working on her recent film Lee. A crew member suggested she sit up straighter to conceal what he called her “belly rolls.” Winslet, however, stood her ground, defiantly responding, “It was deliberate, you know? It wouldn’t occur to me to cover that up.”

She further emphasized the importance of embracing one’s natural self, saying, “It is my life on my face, and that matters.” Winslet’s openness continues to inspire conversations around self-acceptance and resilience in the face of criticism.

</excerpt>

During the production of the new biopic ‘Lee’, actor Kate Winslet experienced a special moment while watching composer Alexandre Desplat conduct a 120-piece orchestra for the film’s score. Winslet reconnected with a familiar face from her past work on the 1997 James Cameron film ‘Titanic’, reported Deadline.

Recalling the moment on ‘The Graham Norton Show’, she said, “And I’m looking at this violinist and I thought, ‘I know that face.'” She continued, “You know when the Titanic is going down, and the violinist stands up and he goes, ‘Come on lads,’ and he starts playing? It was that guy! I’m like, ‘It’s you!’ It was amazing.”

Winslet added, “It was him. It was just wonderful, and there he was. We had so many moments like that in the film, where people I’ve either worked before or really known for a long time and kind of grown up in the industry with, they just showed up for me, and it was incredible.”

</excerpt>

On the night of April 15, 1912, the iconic ship RMS Titanic sank, following its collision with an iceberg in North Atlantic Ocean.

As a result, around 1500 people lost their lives due to drowning. Even though, this incident took place 112 years ago, the sinking of the Titanic continues to be a source of interest to many experts, filmmakers, writers, and historians alike.

However, one aspect of this incident continues to remain a mystery for people even today. That is, that why single human bone was discovered in the debris.

Well, the answer lies in the marine life. It is speculated, that the passage of time has played a crucial role in destruction of bodies and in addition, it was consumed.

Another reason also lies in the depth, as the wreck is now buried at 3800 metres. Which is 12,500 feet underneath the water. In this depth, the water’s chemical composition plays a crucial role.

According to oceanography professor Robert Ballad (the man who discovered titanic’s wreckage at 1985) revealed, that water under 914 metres, which is 3000 feet is full of calcium carbonate, which is a fundamental element present in bones.

Hence in these depths it led to the dissolution of bones. Thus, causing degradation and removal of bones. Overall, explaining the probable reason behind non-discovery of human skeletal remains of titanic wreckage.

His passing occurred on Friday in Los Angeles, with no cause disclosed, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

A longtime collaborator with director James Cameron, Landau played a pivotal role in the creation of some of Hollywood’s most iconic films, including the record-breaking ‘Titanic’ and the groundbreaking ‘Avatar’.

Reflecting on his early days working with Cameron, Jon Landau recalled their partnership during the production of ‘True Lies’ in 1994, where initial skepticism turned into a successful creative alliance.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is bringing back the Oscar-winning 1997 film to the streamer on July 1 in the U.S. and Canada. The OTT platform’s decision has irked many social media users.

“Anyone else find it f***ing terrifying that they ALREADY have a documentary of the Titanic sun on Netflix? It hasn’t even been a f***ing week bruh. Wtf. #setup,” a Twitter user wrote. “So Netflix was like “lets capitalize on this sub thing real quick…gone head and put TITANIC back in the rotation,” another one wrote. “Bad timing,” a Twitter user commented. “Horrible,” a social media user wrote.

Five passengers on the submersible named Titan, which was diving 13,000 feet to view the shipwreck of the British passenger liner Titanic which had sunk in the North Atlantic Ocean in the year 1912, died in a “catastrophic implosion,” US Coast Guard authorities confirmed on Thursday (local time) last week, CNN reported.

After an extraordinary five-day international search operation near the site of the world’s most famous shipwreck, the tail cone and other debris of the submersible were found by a remotely operated vehicle about 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic on the ocean floor about 900 east of Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

Passengers of the Titan, owned by OceanGate, the private US company that runs submersible tours to the Titanic, were confirmed to have died in the implosion the US Coast Guard authorities said. The Washington Post cited experts to report that the company was operating in a legal gray area out at sea, where the American-made submersible was launched from a Canadian vessel into international waters.

A remotely operated vehicle found “five different major pieces of debris” from the Titan submersible, according to Paul Hankins, the US Navy’s director of salvage operations and ocean engineering. The debris was “consistent with the catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber” and, in turn, a “catastrophic implosion,” he said according to CNN.

The passengers included British businessmen and adventurer Hamish Harding, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood from a Pakistan prominent business family, French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet and Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, who acted as the pilot for the Titan.

The adage “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” certainly applies to people who have spent a lot of money on extremely bizarre purchases. Some very peculiar items went under the hammer, selling for some very hefty sums during auctions. Here is a list of the strangest and a few coolest items that people have spent a lot of money on.

A letter written on the Titanic

In a heartbreaking prediction that “if all goes well, we’ll arrive in New York on Wednesday,” the last letter ever written on board by a passenger who died when the Titanic sank has been sold at auction for a record-breaking €141,000 Alexander Oskar Holverson, a first-class traveler, wrote his mother a letter on three pages of embossed White Star Line stationery the day before the liner ran into an iceberg.

Celebrities’ hair

A lock of hair from the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley, sold for €1,300. Elvis’ personal barber, Homer Gill Gilleland, who toured with Elvis for more than 20 years, had saved the lock, which is in excellent shape. At Catawiki, locks of hair from the Beatles, Napoleon, Marilyn Monroe, and each of the four Beatles sold for over €8,000. The market for late celebrity hair is quite lucrative, according to Mark Borgman, since super fans think that by purchasing their icon’s hair, they will always own a piece of it.

A banana taped to a wall

A banana that was taped to a wall once sold for an astounding $120,000. The piece of art, titled “Comedian,” was produced by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan for the Art Basel show in Miami. David Datuna, a late Georgian artist, ate the banana before it was replaced. He claimed that the artwork was about “the idea,” not the banana itself. According to Datuna, he made the piece to “question what art is.”

Queen Victoria’s undies

In addition, cotton underwear once worn by Queen Victoria—Queen Elizabeth’s great-great-grandmother—were sold for $16,300 in 2015 when the topic of lavatories came up. The underwear, which was embroidered with Victoria Regina’s royal initials, “VR,” was in immaculate condition due to being wrapped in tissue and maintained in a temperature-controlled space. These spacious drawers, which sported a 45-inch drawstring waist, had something special about them. According to auctioneer Richard Edmonds, “On these particular knickers, there is a chevron section, which is where they were taken up slightly as Queen Victoria got older and essentially shrank in stature.”

Justin Timberlake’s leftover toast

Twenty years ago, Justin Timberlake, then a teenage NSYNC band member, was being interviewed on the Z100 morning show in New York City when he accidentally left some of his unfinished French toast behind. Two of its slices were playfully listed for sale on eBay by the station’s DJ, and were eventually purchased for $1,025 by a teen named Kathy Summers. The teen enthusiast said, “I’ll probably freeze-dry it, then seal it, then put it on my dresser,” when asked what she would do with the leftover, slightly charred toast. A wise investment, undoubtedly.
