As the woman opens the door, the tiger stands calmly, but with its piercing stare, it becomes clear that this wild animal isn’t here to play.

The door swiftly slams shut as the woman, clearly startled, avoids what could have been a dangerous situation. The video, shared by the account “Nature is Amazing” on X, was accompanied by the caption: “Imagine you open your door and you see this… What would you do?”

Tiger Urine For Rs 600 For Treating ‘Rheumatoid Arthritis’ In China

January 28, 2025, 12:41 pm

A zoo in Sichuan province, China, has come under fire for selling bottles of tiger urine, claiming it has therapeutic benefits for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, sprains, and muscle pain. The Yaan Bifengxia Wildlife Zoo, often touted as a “world-class” facility, offered 250g bottles of Siberian tiger urine for 50 yuan (approximately $7 or ₹600), promoting its use as part of traditional medicine.

Social Media Exposes Controversial Practice

The controversy began when a visitor posted about the unusual product on social media, leading to widespread backlash. According to the packaging, the tiger urine must be mixed with white wine and applied to the affected area using ginger slices. The zoo even claimed the product could be consumed orally but warned users to stop in case of allergic reactions.

How Is the Urine Collected?

A staff member revealed that the zoo collects tiger urine from a basin where the animals urinate, but it remains unclear whether the liquid undergoes any disinfection process before being sold.

Experts and Conservationists Criticize the Move

Pharmacists and traditional Chinese medicine practitioners have expressed skepticism about the zoo’s claims. “Tiger urine has no recognized therapeutic value in traditional Chinese medicine,” stated a pharmacist from Hubei Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital. Experts also criticized the promotion of unproven remedies, warning it could distort traditional medicine and harm tiger conservation efforts.

One practitioner questioned whether the zoo even had the proper qualifications to sell such products. In response, the zoo claimed it holds a valid business license.

Public Reactions: Curiosity and Disgust

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions on Chinese social media platforms. While some individuals admitted to purchasing the product out of curiosity, others raised concerns about hygiene and potential bacterial contamination.

One user remarked, “I bought this for my dad, but it’s just sitting there as it doesn’t seem effective.” Another added, “The thought of using tiger urine is gross. What if it spreads bacteria?”

Tigers in Chinese Culture

Tigers hold significant cultural value in Chinese traditions, symbolizing bravery and strength. Some ancient texts even suggested tiger bones could treat conditions like epilepsy and rheumatism. However, such practices are banned in modern China due to the critically endangered status of the species. Anyone caught hunting tigers in China faces severe penalties, including imprisonment and hefty fines.

Conservationists argue that such practices, even if legal, could set a harmful precedent for wildlife conservation. They emphasize the need for stringent measures to protect endangered species rather than commercializing their body parts for unproven remedies.

The incident has left many questioning the zoo’s ethics and its role in promoting conservation and responsible practices.

Close Call with a 500-Pound Predator

A video that quickly went viral on social media captured the woman’s dangerous stunt. As she put her hand through the enclosure, the 500-pound Bengal tiger lunged towards her, trying to bite her hand. She managed to pull back just in time before the tiger turned away. The police department initially shared the video on Facebook, but it has since been removed. Their post included a photo of a warning sign near the enclosure, stating, “Do not climb over the fence. Climbing over any zoo fence is against city ordinance 247-C.”

Police and Zoo Officials Respond

The Bridgeton Police Department reminded the public that climbing over zoo fences is strictly prohibited, citing the city ordinance. Violators of this ordinance could face bans or restrictions from visiting the zoo. John Medica, Director of Recreation and Public Affairs for the City of Bridgeton, emphasized that the safety of both the animals and visitors is a top priority. He stated, “Any visitor behavior that places the animals, staff, and members of the public in a potentially dangerous situation is unacceptable and will be addressed accordingly.”

Background on the Tigers and the Zoo

The Cohanzick Zoo is home to two Bengal tigers, Rishi and Mahesha, who have been at the zoo since they were cubs in 2016. Described as “Gorgeous and ornery” by the former president of the Cohanzick Zoological Society, Bonnie Facemyer, the tigers have grown from 20-pound cubs to nearly 500 pounds each.

Conservation Concerns: The Plight of Bengal Tigers

Bengal tigers, also known as Indian tigers, are an endangered species. As of October 2022, it is estimated that only around 3,500 Bengal tigers remain in the wild, making their conservation a global priority. Bengal tigers are the second-largest tiger species, surpassed only by the Siberian tiger.

A Sobering Reminder

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of respecting wildlife and adhering to safety guidelines when visiting zoos. The reckless actions of a few can endanger both the animals and other visitors, emphasizing the need for strict enforcement of safety regulations.

November 9, 2022, 1:28 pm

In the Maitri Bagh Zoo a two-month-old white tiger named ‘Singham’ was released in Chhattisgarh’s Bhilai on Tuesday.

Prevailing the COVID-19 pandemic over the last two years breeding among tigers was stopped as per the officials.

Earlier, a few months ago a tigress and tiger were brought together through which in September Singham was born.

“Breeding among tigers was stopped for the last two years amid the pandemic. Six months ago, we brought Roma (Tigress) and Sultan (Tiger) and had a tiger cub on September 5. We named him Singham. Cub is healthy,” Maitri Bagh Zoo in-charge, N K Jain said.

Meanwhile, in October six months four tiger curbs were released in the Bengal Safari near Siliguri in the open enclosure.

After conducting various trials the West Bengal Zoo Authority made the move after studying the behavior of the animal.

According to the officials, the perfect age to release the tiger cubs are nearly about six months.

Moreover, in March 2022 one tigress named Shila gave birth to six cubs and for the past six years, she is staying in the park.

In the presence of forest department minister Jyotipriya Mallick, the curbs were released, said the Director of Bengal Safari park, Dewa Sangmu Sherpa.

“We have released four tiger cubs which were born on March 22, 2022. Earlier the authority conducted a few trials before the release to understand the behavior of the animals and we found it to be very normal. So we decided to release them today,” Sherpa said.

According to the Sherpa, the tiger cubs will be the center of attraction and people will enjoy the Safari.

“The park has already got the approval from the state Zoo Authority and now we are waiting for Central Zoo Authority regarding the Lion Safari and sloth bear Safari very soon,” Sherpa said.

Man posted whatsApp story for selling Tiger’s cubs, booked

September 10, 2022, 3:03 pm

A man from Arni village in Thiruvannamalai district was apprehended by an undercover squad of the Tamil Nadu wildlife conservation wing on Wednesday for selling tiger cubs to interested parties. D Parthiban, who allegedly priced tiger cubs at Rs 25 lakh each, has been detained on suspicion of engaging in illegal trade and deceiving the public.

Following the arrest of a man in Chennai’s Ambattur, the wildlife protection unit began to pay attention to Parthiban. Three weeks ago, he was detained for selling star tortoises at his pet shop. Officials from the forest department investigated his laptop, phone, and other properties throughout the investigation, which led them to Parthibhan’s WhatsApp status.

He had announced that tiger cubs were for sale alongside pictures of them on World Tiger Day. A report stated that the undercover squad was soon dispatched to find the individual.

According to the reports, it took the team a month to track down Parthiban, who allegedly promised to bring the cubs from the adjacent state of Andhra Pradesh. The development has been communicated to the AP Forest Department.

The possibility that Parthibhan is nothing more than a con artist has not been completely discounted by the authorities, either. He most likely made up the “baby tiger” tale to get buyers to pay. Officials said that it is impossible to smuggle protected animals out of the forest ranges.

According to state wildlife board member and Besant Memorial Animal Dispensary employee Shravan Krishnan, these people ought to be punished for unknowingly supporting the illegal trade.
