While Canary Mission claims to expose anti-Israel activism, critics argue it serves as a blacklist, threatening students’ futures. With little transparency about its backers, the group has ties to pro-Israel lobbying efforts and Israeli government agencies.

What is Canary Mission?

Canary Mission, launched in 2015, presents itself as a watchdog monitoring individuals and organizations allegedly promoting antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment on North American college campuses. The group claims to combat rising antisemitic hate crimes and counter the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which calls for economic and political pressure on Israel over its treatment of Palestinians.

The website maintains a blacklist of students, faculty, and professionals it accuses of anti-Israel activities. It publishes personal details, including names, photos, institutional affiliations, and social media links. According to its mission statement, these records aim to prevent so-called “radicals” from securing jobs.

A 2015 promotional video from Canary Mission depicted Jews wearing yellow stars alongside hijab-wearing Palestinian women waving flags. The video concluded with the warning: “It is your duty to ensure that today’s radicals are not tomorrow’s employees.”

How Canary Mission Affects Students and Academics

Many students and faculty targeted by Canary Mission report serious consequences, including job rejections, online harassment, and threats. Since the website’s pages rank high on search engines, listed individuals often find their profiles appearing first in Google searches, affecting hiring decisions and admissions.

Will Mleczko, a 20-year-old student, voiced his concerns: “If a prospective employer finds you on there, they probably won’t hire you. You’ll be blacklisted.”

Nadine Jawad, a University of Michigan student government leader, discovered her profile accused her of associating with people who “support terrorists,” despite her strong academic record and lack of extremist ties.

Layla Saliba, a graduate student at Columbia University, protested Israeli airstrikes that killed her family members in Gaza. Soon after, Canary Mission labeled her a “supporter of terrorists,” leading to online harassment and death threats.

Egyptian-American student Layla Sayed also found herself targeted. Shortly after attending a pro-Palestinian demonstration, a friend informed her that Canary Mission had listed her profile. The website included her name, personal details, and a social media link. Following this, she received threats and was falsely branded a “Hamas War Crimes Apologist.”

Who Funds Canary Mission?

Despite its influence, little is known about Canary Mission’s financial backers. However, investigative reports have revealed some connections.

In 2018, journalist Josh Nathan-Kazis of The Forward identified the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco as a funder. After this revelation, the federation publicly withdrew its support.

Al Jazeera’s The Lobby – USA documentary linked Israeli-American businessman Adam Milstein to Canary Mission’s funding. Adam Milstein denied direct involvement but praised the blacklist.

Reports from Haaretz indicate that Israel’s Ministry of Strategic Affairs uses Canary Mission’s data to bar activists from entering Israel. This raises concerns that the website functions as an intelligence asset rather than an independent watchdog.

How the Blacklist Operates ?

Canary Mission targets students, professors, professionals, and organizations it deems anti-Israel. It collects and publishes their personal information, often distorting quotes and affiliations to portray them as extremists.

According to the Middle East Studies Association, the group’s framing “makes individuals appear monstrous, guilty of raving antisemitism, and supportive of terrorism.”

The only way to be removed from the blacklist is by submitting a written apology. Many critics call this practice coercive and unethical.

Legal and Social Consequences

Students listed by Canary Mission report anxiety, fear, and paranoia. Many receive rape and death threats. Some have even been doxxed, with their phone numbers and addresses leaked online.

Beyond online harassment, Canary Mission’s influence extends into real-life intimidation. At George Washington University in 2018, two men dressed in yellow canary costumes entered a campus building, frightening pro-Palestinian activists.

Many argue that the blacklist stifles student activism. Rani al-Hindi, a former Palestine solidarity activist at Hunter College, noted, “It’s killing the student movement. We’re too intimidated to organize protests or launch divestment campaigns.”

Can Anything Be Done About Canary Mission?

Currently, students have little legal recourse against Canary Mission. Legal experts note that much of the website’s content is protected under the First Amendment.

However, academic institutions are being urged to take action. Experts argue that university leaders must educate themselves about Canary Mission’s tactics and support students and faculty facing harassment.

Bill Mullen, a professor at Purdue University and co-founder of Against Canary Mission, emphasized its chilling effect on activism: “It is the most significant and effective pro-Israel intimidation tool. It operates 24/7 and constantly updates its targets.”

As debates over free speech, academic freedom, and political activism continue, Canary Mission remains a troubling example of how anonymous groups wield digital blacklists to shape discourse and suppress dissent.

CM Siddaramaiah has taken the matter seriously, stating, “The government has taken the case of providing royal hospitality to actor Darshan and others in Parappana Agrahara Jail seriously, and I have suggested that the guilty officials should be suspended immediately. I have instructed the State Director General of Police to immediately transfer Darshan and others to different jails and to visit the jail and give a full report on the case.”

Alleged VIP Treatment in Jail

The viral image shows Darshan, currently held at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail, sitting comfortably with a cigarette and coffee cup, surrounded by gangster Wilson Garden Naga, and inmates Nagaraj (Darshan’s manager and co-accused) and Kulla Seena. Additionally, a video surfaced showing Darshan allegedly speaking to his aide via video call from within the prison. There is no official confirmation whether the photo was taken inside the jail or elsewhere.

Currently, 17 people, including Darshan and his friend Pavithra Gowda, are in judicial custody related to the murder of Darshan’s fan, Renukaswamy.

Suspension of Prison Officials

An investigation was launched after the photo went viral, leading to the suspension of seven Bengaluru prison officials, including two jailors. DG Prisons Malini Krishnamurthy is inspecting the Bengaluru Central Prison as the investigation continues.

The suspended officials include Jailers Sharana Basava Ameenagada, Prabhu S Khandelwal, Assistant Jailer LS Tippe Swamy, Srikanth Talwar, Head Wardens Venkatappa Murthy and Venkatappa Kattoli, Warden Basappa Teli, and Sampath Kumar Kadapatti. Home Minister G Parameshwara reported that the inquiry was conducted until early morning, resulting in the immediate suspension of these officers. The jail superintendent will also be transferred once the report is completed.

The Home Minister added, “…Yesterday evening, we acted as quickly as possible. Senior police officials went there and conducted an investigation. Preliminary findings identified about seven people involved, who have been immediately suspended. Further investigations are ongoing, and if senior officers are found to be involved, we will take action against them as well.”

Woman’s Family Abducts Husband, Demands To Return Wedding Expanse

On Saturday, he said he received a call from one of Sakina’s relatives to meet him in the Sathe Nagar area of Mankhurd. He said that when he arrived, his father-in-law Firoz Ansari, along with four other relatives, were present in a car.

Mumbai police registered a case on Wednesday after the family members of a woman allegedly abducted her husband, suspecting infidelity, and demanded his family return Rs 2 lakh spent on the wedding.

The woman’s husband, Akram Qureshi (24), had his family approach the local police station, where an FIR was lodged against five members of her family. By late evening, some of them had been detained by the police.

According to the FIR, Qureshi, a resident of Shivaji Nagar, married Sakina, a Vasai resident, in July 2023.

Qureshi stated that nearly a month ago, his father-in-law took Sakina back to Vasai.

He alleged that he was pushed into the car and his hands and legs were tied up.

He claimed he was taken to their house in Vasai and was later confined in an adjacent flat where he was beaten by the relatives.

The accused then called Qureshi’s family members and demanded the return of the Rs 2 lakh they had spent on the wedding if they wanted him alive.

Qureshi’s family then approached the Shivaji Nagar police station, where an FIR was registered. The girl’s family allowed Qureshi to leave after learning about the complaint.

A senior officer said that the woman suspected her husband of cheating on her.

Due to this, she left home last month and informed her family, who allegedly devised the plan.

An officer mentioned that they have detained some of the individuals named as accused in the case.

According to the Delhi fire service, “There was news of a bomb on the flight going from Delhi to Varanasi at 5:35 AM today. Quick Response Teams (QRT) arrived at the spot.”

Delhi Airport Authorities confirmed that all passengers are safe. “All passengers are safe and the flight is undergoing a detailed inspection. All passengers were evacuated through the emergency exits without incident,” an airport spokesperson said.

Record-breaking Pilgrim Influx Marks Start Of Char Dham Yatra Season

The Char Dham Yatra has witnessed an extraordinary surge in pilgrim numbers at Yamunotri and Gangotri Dham within the first 15 days of the pilgrimage season. On Friday alone, 9,812 pilgrims visited Yamunotri Dham, while 13,602 made their way to Gangotri Dham. This influx has brought the total number of visitors to an impressive 3,63,537 since the pilgrimage season began, marking a significant increase compared to previous years.

In the same period in 2023, 1,97,413 pilgrims visited these sites, and in 2022, the number was 2,22,852. Despite the surge in pilgrims, the Char Dham Yatra has proceeded smoothly, thanks to meticulous planning and coordination by district authorities.

District Magistrate Dr Meherban Singh Bisht has played a crucial role in ensuring the pilgrimage runs efficiently. During his visits along the Gangotri Yatra route, he emphasized the importance of strict travel arrangements to officials, insisting that no person should be allowed to travel without registration. This focus on organization and safety has helped maintain order amid the large crowds.

Despite the increase in pilgrims and vehicles, the journey to the Dhams remains orderly. Vehicles are managed at holding points and one-way gates to prevent congestion. Adjustments in stopping places and timings have also helped streamline traffic flow, ensuring that pilgrimage times remain consistent with normal days.

The Char Dham Yatra, which began on May 10 this year, includes the sacred Hindu pilgrimage circuit of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Uttarkashi, home to Yamunotri and Gangotri, has been a focal point of devotion as pilgrims flock to these revered sites. The River Yamuna, originating from the Yamunotri Glacier, adds to the spiritual significance of the journey. The pilgrimage season for the Char Dham Yatra peaks annually during the summers in Uttarakhand.
