A 35-year-old man, Abhimanyu Gupta, has been arrested in Maharashtra’s Thane district for the murder of a 74-year-old woman, Sevamary Augustin Nadar. The crime, committed on August 14, was motivated by Gupta’s addiction to online gambling, which led him to steal gold ornaments from Nadar and subsequently set her house on fire to eliminate evidence.

According to police reports, Gupta attacked Nadar while she was alone, slitting her throat before fleeing with her gold jewelry. To cover his tracks, he set the house ablaze. A four-year-old girl died after a dog fell from a building terrace onto her while she was walking with her mother in Mumbra, Thane district, on Tuesday, according to police reports.

Authorities suspect that the dog was thrown from the terrace of the Chirag Mansion building in Amrit Nagar, where the girl, Sana Mohammd Shaikh, was walking.

An accidental death report has been filed by the local Mumbra police station.

The entire incident was captured on CCTV, showing the dog falling onto the girl with great force, causing her to lose consciousness. Local residents quickly came to the aid of the girl’s mother, Shakila, and transported the girl to Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital in Kalwa. She was later transferred to Kalsekar Hospital for a CT scan but was declared dead.

The injured dog was taken to a hospital for treatment. When a local resident attempted to take the dog for treatment, a woman tried to prevent this, leading to police intervention. The dog was then sent to Kharghar for medical care.

The police are investigating the incident. According to the girl’s mother, she does not wish to file a complaint against anyone. An officer mentioned that it appears the dog belonged to a resident, who will be questioned to determine how the incident occurred. Man Booked For Circulating Private Video Of His Ex-live-In Partner

Police have registered a case against a 29-year-old man, Kiran Bagrao, for allegedly circulating a private video of a woman on a social messaging platform after their live-in relationship ended, an official said.

The complaint, lodged by a 47-year-old woman, alleges that during their relationship, the accused took gold jewelry from her and recorded a Private Video of her taking a bath. After she refused to continue the relationship and demanded her jewelry back, Bagrao allegedly circulated the video on WhatsApp. Furthermore, he issued death threats when she refused to meet him.

The live-in relationship between the accused and the woman lasted from August 2022 to January 2023 in Dombivli and Majiwada. The local police are investigating the matter further.

The First Information Report (FIR) against Bagrao includes charges under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 509 (uttering any word or making any gesture intended to insult the modesty of a woman), along with provisions of the IT Act. The case is being handled by Kapurbawdi police station of the Wagle Estate division, the official told PTI.

Thane: Dombivili’s Chemical Factory Engulfed By Fire

On Wednesday at 10:30 am, the Dombivli chemical factory named Indo amines chemical company was engulfed by fire in Thane, announced police officials.

The fire had also managed to spread to neighboring Malde capacitors unit. But, the police managed to evacuate whole the area on time. Due to timely intervention from Dombivili MIDC and Kalyan fire brigade, the fire was controlled.

Furthermore, around 20 employees were present at the site, but no casualties have been reported, as they all managed to come out on time.

Dombivli Factory Blast: Owner Remanded In Police Custody Till May 29

Maharashtra’s Thane Court on Saturday remanded in police custody till May 29 the owner of the chemical factory in Dombivli where an explosion killed nine persons and injured more than 60.

The accused, Malay Mehta, owner of Amudan Chemicals, was produced before the magistrate court in Kalyan, a spokesperson of the Thane city police said.

Mehta was placed under arrest by the police for fourteen days, and he told the court that they needed to visit the manufacturing site to determine whether any other people were involved in the crime.

According to the official, the police intended to look into everyone’s involvement in the incident because of the massive damage caused by the explosion.

Mehta’s attorney said that the business complied with all laws and had all necessary authorizations.

An additional party intervened in the case, endorsing the police’s request for custody and questioning.

The magistrate remanded the accused in police custody until May 29 after hearing from each of the attorneys, according to the official.

The inquiry has been taken over by the Ulhasnagar unit of the criminal branch.

The owners, directors, managers, and officials in charge of the factory have all been named in a formal complaint filed with the police.

According to the Indian Penal Code, the accused have been charged with culpable homicide, intentionally causing harm, and careless behaviour with combustible materials and explosive chemicals.

In addition to the IPC, the police have also brought charges by the Explosive Substances Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

According to the FIR, the company had not taken precautions over mixing chemicals, final products, and their storage, knowing well that any lapses might lead to an explosion, which could affect and damage the company and structures around it.

These lapses led to the explosion on Thursday, resulting in deaths on the premises and companies around the factory, the FIR said.

Maharashtra Detects 91 Cases Of Omicron Subvariant KP.2

The state has detected 91 instances of the new Covid-19 Omicron subvariant KP.2, which has surpassed the previously prevalent JN.1 variant and is now leading to an increase in cases in several nations. Pune reported 51 cases, while Thane reported 20 cases of KP.2, which was initially identified worldwide in January. Presently, KP.2 is the predominant variant in the US.

Maharashtra first detected cases of the KP.2 variant in January. By March and April, it had become the dominant strain in the region. However, Dr. Rajesh Karyakarte, the state’s genome sequencing coordinator, noted that there hasn’t been a proportional increase in hospitalizations or severe cases associated with this variant. KP.2 originated from JN.1, which was the prevalent Covid strain by the end of 2023. In March, the state experienced a slight uptick in cases, averaging around 250 detections, likely due to the spread of the KP.2 variant.

Apart from Pune and Thane, seven cases each were identified in Amravati and Aurangabad, while Solapur had two cases. Additionally, Ahmednagar, Nashik, Latur, and Sangli each reported one case of the KP.2 variant. Notably, there were no reported cases from Mumbai.

Lok Sabha Election: Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena likely to get Thane seat

The alliance between the BJP, the Shiv Sena, and the NCP, known as Mahayuti, seems to have resolved its differences in Maharashtra. According to sources cited by ANI, the alliance will now field a candidate from Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena for the prestigious Thane Lok Sabha seat. The BJP leadership has given its clearance for the Sena to contest this seat, with a formal announcement expected soon.

Sources indicate that the winning potential of a Shiv Sena candidate was a significant factor in conceding the seat to them. Thane Lok Sabha seat, comprising six assembly constituencies, is predominantly occupied by Marathi voters, ensuring the Sena’s strong chances of victory. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, himself an MLA from the Kopri-Pachpakhadi seat, holds considerable influence in the area, previously commanded by his mentor, the late Anant Dighe.

Moreover, the Sena currently holds the Ovala-Majiwada assembly seat, while Shrikant Shinde, Eknath Shinde’s son, represents the neighbouring Kalyan seat in the Lok Sabha. The remaining four assembly seats in the Thane Lok Sabha constituency are under BJP’s control.

The candidate announcement is expected on Wednesday. The BJP’s central leadership has reportedly instructed the state leadership to manage potential contenders for the Thane Lok Sabha seat. Among the front runners from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena are Ovala MLA Pratap Sarnaik and party spokesperson Naresh Mhaske.

Presently, the Thane Lok Sabha seat is held by three-time MP Rajan Vichare, affiliated with UBT Shiv Sena. Vichare has been nominated again and is actively campaigning, although he faces significant anti-incumbency sentiments and a loss of supporters who recently pledged allegiance to Eknath Shinde.

In the 2019 elections, Rajan Vichare, contesting under the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance, secured victory with 740,969 votes, defeating NCP’s Anand Paranjpe by a margin of 412,145 votes.

The Thane Lok Sabha constituency will go to polls on May 20 in Phase 5, with results announced on June 4. Maharashtra, with 48 Lok Sabha seats, is the second-largest after Uttar Pradesh. In the 2019 elections, the BJP won 23 out of 25 seats contested in alliance with the undivided Shiv Sena. The elections for Maharashtra’s 48 Lok Sabha seats will take place in five phases on April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, and May 20.

Mumbai: Tree falls on Ganpati Pandal in Thane, woman dead, 4 injured

A tree fell on a Ganesh pandal in Thane on Friday night, killing a 55-year-old woman and injuring four others, according to officials.

A 30-year-old man is among the injured, and his condition is critical; he is receiving treatment in a private hospital, officials added.

This is the third rain-related fatality to occur in Thane in the past few days. On Friday night, the city was pummelling by heavy rains for the second straight day, along with thunderstorms and lightning. Due to flooding in the city on Thursday, two people perished in the water.

The deceased Pratik Walavalkar, 30, and the deceased Rajashree Walavalkar had travelled to the pandal. Two vehicles and a portion of Kolbad Mitra Mandal’s pandal were damaged when the tree crashed on them.

“The incident took place around 8 in the evening when due to the storm a huge tree came crashing down on the pandal. A few people had taken shelter inside to escape the heavy rain. Rajashree suffered hip injuries, while Pratik suffered hip and eye injuries; Rajashree died during treatment,” said Avinash Sawant, chief officer of Thane’s Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC).

RDMC and pandal volunteers used a JCB and a Hydra machine to cut down the tree. The immersion was carried out after the tree was cut down, and the idol sustained no damage.

In Thane, flooding on Thursday resulted in the deaths of a 4-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man.
