Union Cabinet Greenlights One Nation, One Election, Comprehensive Bill Soon

The Union Cabinet has cleared the ‘one nation, one election’ initiative, sources said. The government will introduce a comprehensive bill during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan strongly pitched for simultaneous elections on Wednesday. He said that frequent elections are thwarting the progress of the nation while speaking at the International Gita festival in Kurukshetra.

Chouhan appreciated the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, “A glorious, prosperous, and powerful India is being built under the leadership of the prime minister. Soon, India will become the ‘Vishwa Guru’ (world leader) in front of our eyes. There is no doubt about it, and the whole world knows it.”

However, he said that the frequent election cycle is a major hurdle in progress: “Any other thing may be happening or not in the country, but election preparations continue for twelve months all five years,” he said. Chouhan highlighted the constant election cycle, from Lok Sabha elections to Assembly polls in states like Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Delhi.

The government accepted this year’s recommendations by a high-level committee on phased simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies. According to sources, on December 9, the government has set its ball rolling with ‘one nation, one election’ as it has moved to table the bill during the ongoing session of Parliament.

The Ram Nath Kovind Committee’s report, which is already approved by the Cabinet, supports this proposal of holding simultaneous elections across India.

The teacher, identified as Veer Singh Medha, used scissors to cut the girl’s braided hair, and a criminal case is being filed against him for his misconduct, according to District Collector Rajesh Batham.

The incident became public after a viral video showed Medha cutting the girl’s hair while she cried uncontrollably, with a classmate trying to comfort her. The event took place at a government primary school in Semalkhedi. Reports also indicate that the drunk teacher had an argument with a local villager.

A villager who heard the girl’s cries intervened and found Medha cutting the girl’s hair. The villager confronted the teacher, who justified his actions by saying he was punishing the students for not studying. The teacher allegedly dismissed the villager’s warnings, stating, “You can shoot the video but nobody will be able to do anything to me.”

US, India Discuss Bangladesh Crisis Amid Hindu Community Concerns

United States is actively engaging with India and other regional nations to address the escalating violence in Bangladesh and is advocating for an end to the unrest, according to a US State Department official. Vedant Patel, Deputy Spokesperson for the State Department, emphasized during a daily news briefing on Wednesday that the US is committed to ending the violence, ensuring accountability, and upholding the rule of law in Bangladesh. Patel’s remarks followed queries about the diplomatic interactions between the US and India concerning the crisis in Bangladesh after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.

“We have been in communication with our Indian partners and other regional countries to address the recent developments in Bangladesh,” Patel stated. “We support the new government’s efforts to restore security and protect minority communities.”

In response to the unfolding situation, the Hindu American Foundation has urged the White House to take action to safeguard the Hindu minority in Bangladesh. The foundation criticized President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken for their perceived lack of response to the ongoing attacks on Bangladeshi Hindus. In a statement posted on X, the organization condemned the US government’s silence and called for immediate action, highlighting the destruction of homes and temples and the loss of lives within the Hindu community.

HinduACTion, a Washington-based NGO, reported that Hindu communities in rural areas of Bangladesh are particularly vulnerable to attacks due to their isolation, which offers Islamist groups more freedom to target them. TN Hooch Tragedy: 47 Dead, 3 Accused Sent For 15-Days Judicial Custody

Tamil Nadu Director of Medical Education, Sangumani, reported on Friday that 47 individuals have died after consuming illicit liquor in the Kallakurichi district.

Simultaneously, the second day of the Tamil Nadu Assembly Session in Chennai was marred by chaos as AIADMK legislators, donning black clothes, protested inside the House regarding the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy. Speaker Appavu directed the watch and ward staff to evict the AIADMK MLAs from the Assembly hall. Visuals showed these members being escorted outside by staff, amidst heavy police presence.

The uproar, both inside and outside the Tamil Nadu Assembly in Chennai, was fueled by AIADMK members’ demands for a discussion on the tragedy that claimed at least 47 lives.

Yesterday, the Assembly session concluded by honoring those who died from consuming the spurious liquor. Legislators also paid tribute to 17 former legislators, the late DMK MLA Pugazhenthi, and victims of the Kuwait blaze, which included seven individuals from Tamil Nadu. State Assembly Speaker Appavu read the obituary note, followed by a moment of silence.

The Assembly session is scheduled to continue until June 29.

Earlier today, three suspects in the Kallakurichi illicit liquor case were remanded to 15 days of judicial custody and transferred to Cuddalore Central Prison. The accused, identified as Govindaraj, Damodaran, and Vijaya, were produced before the Kallakurichi district combined court.

In a related development, Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai sent a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting a CBI inquiry into the deaths. Annamalai accused the ruling DMK government of being complicit in the tragedy, alleging collusion between DMK members and local liquor sellers.

“We want to inform your good office that a similar incident that occurred in May 2023 in Marakkanam of Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district and Chengalpattu district claimed 23 precious lives. In the past two years, Tamil Nadu has lost over 60 lives to hooch because of the ineffective governance of the DMK government,” Annamalai stated in his letter.

He claimed, based on reliable sources, that the production and sale of illicit liquor in Tamil Nadu are conducted with the support of DMK party functionaries and cadres. He alleged that points of sale for such liquor are located near judicial courts, police stations, and other government offices.

Families of the deceased in Kallakurichi claimed that the sale of illicit liquor occurred in prime areas of the town. “It is evident that the sale of illicit liquor is done in full public view with the knowledge of the local police, who operate under the direction of local political leaders belonging to the DMK,” Annamalai added.

Given the governance issues under the DMK rule, Annamalai, on behalf of BJP Tamil Nadu, urged for a CBI inquiry to ensure accountability. “Considering the dire state of governance in Tamil Nadu under the DMK rule, on behalf of BJP Tamil Nadu, we kindly request your good office to order a CBI enquiry on this matter as we firmly believe that the DMK Government will curtail the State Police’s from bringing all the persons responsible for the deaths before the court of law,” he stated.

The Tamil Nadu government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the tragedy, led by retired Madras High Court judge Justice B Gokuldas, who will submit a report within three months.

Chief Minister MK Stalin announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh to the families of each deceased victim, while those receiving treatment will get Rs 50,000 each. Victims are being treated at the Kallakurichi Government Medical College and Hospital, as well as hospitals in Salem, Villupuram, and the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry.

During the ongoing sixth phase of the Lok Sabha polls, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Somnath Bharti has alleged that BJP polling agents are carrying candidate pamphlets inside the booth. In a post on X, Bharti said, “Shocked to report that every polling agent of the BJP is carrying candidate pamphlets inside the polling booth and shamelessly displaying the same fearing no one. Sharing video of what I saw inside booth no 134,135,137 and 138 of Assembly Constituency-43.”

AAP also shared this on its official handle on X and said that the incident is shameful. “Shameful!! Election Commission, what is happening right under your nose? Earlier, AAP leader Atishi alleged that the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi VK Saxena, held a meeting with Delhi Police to slow down the voting process in areas that are strongholds of the INDIA bloc. “We have received official information that last evening, LG had called a meeting of Delhi Police officials and instructions were given to Delhi Police that in all the areas which are strongholds of the INDIA alliance, voting should be slowed down in those areas. If this happens then it will be a violation of free and fair elections. So we hope that the Election Commission will take cognizance of this,” Atishi alleged.
