</excerpt>

Iran will stage a “historic” state funeral on Saturday in Tehran to commemorate 60 individuals killed in its 12-day conflict with Israel. They include high-ranking military officers, nuclear scientists, and their relatives. General Mohammad Bagheri, the second-highest ranked Iranian military officer, is among them. Nuclear physicist Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi is also among the dead. Iran will start the national mourning at 8:00 am local time in Enghelab Square, to be followed by a huge funeral procession to Azadi Square, as assured by state authorities.

A Day of Mourning and Military Tribute in Tehran

Saturday, June 28, has been hailed by Iranian authorities as a “historic day for Islamic Iran and the revolution.” The celebration will begin with a short ceremony in downtown Tehran and wind its way through the city in a magnificent procession. The route was announced by Mohsen Mahmoudi, chairman of the Islamic Development Coordination Council of Tehran, in a television interview.

Bagheri was a Revolutionary Guards major general who was second-in-command after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He will be buried along with his wife and daughter. His daughter was a journalist. Nuclear scientist Tehranchi will be buried with his wife. The funeral will also pay tribute to four women and four children.

Israel-Iran Conflict: Heavy Toll

The war broke out on June 13 following pre-emptive Israeli strikes intended to stop Iran’s nuclear weapons development. Iran’s health ministry confirmed that at least 627 individuals were killed in the Israeli raids. More than 4,900 others were wounded. The attacks also took the lives of over 30 of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards’ top commanders. This includes commander-in-chief Hossein Salami and aerospace chief Amirali Hajizadeh.

Iranian attacks on Israel, retaliating, killed 28. The toll cannot be confirmed from either side, but experts hold the war as the most serious direct confrontation between the two in decades.

Nuclear Negotiations in Jeopardy

The war has also impacted diplomatic relations. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that negotiations with the US regarding the nuclear deal are now made “complicated” due to American strikes.

He explained in a television interview that there was no accord to resume the negotiations. “No time has been set, no promise has been made, and we haven’t even talked about restarting the talks,” Araghchi said.

Iran’s huge funeral march on June 28 will be a demonstration of the nation’s mounting rage and sorrow. The rituals will also convey an atmosphere of defiance in the face of international alarm at the escalating war and deadlocked diplomacy.

</excerpt>

The Trump administration has made a broad $30 billion offer to Iran to revive nuclear talks. This is following the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel over the alleged nuclear weapons program of Tehran.

The offer involves relaxing sanctions, unfreezing billions of Iranian money, and creating a new civilian nuclear program—without uranium enrichment. Four sources confirmed this fresh diplomatic initiative, despite recent US-led airstrikes on Fordow Iran facility.

Civil Nuclear Investment

The US has suggested creating a civilian nuclear program for Iran worth about $20–$30 billion, officials close to the talks say. The program would be dedicated exclusively to producing energy. It would not have any capacity for uranium enrichment—a requirement the Trump administration has demanded as non-negotiable. Iran has consistently asserted that uranium enrichment is crucial for its sovereignty and energy independence.

A government official explained that the money will not directly be provided by the US. The administration, instead, hopes that Gulf allies, probably Saudi Arabia and the UAE, will pay for the new nuclear facilities. The list includes the replacement of the Fordow site, which was recently destroyed by US bunker-buster bombs in the Israel-Iran war.

Sanctions Relief and Frozen Funds

Aside from the nuclear energy proposal, the US has tested the waters on lifting sanctions. A principal element is the freeing of almost $6 billion in Iranian funds now frozen abroad.

The Trump administration is hoping that this economic inducement will bring Iran back to the negotiating table. Negotiations have been underway for two weeks through US and Middle Eastern intermediaries despite military tensions between Iran and Israel.

Creative Diplomacy Amid Conflict

One of the officials said there are various ideas being considered. “There are a lot of ideas being batted around by different folks, and a lot of them are attempting to be creative,” the official said.

The Trump administration has positioned itself as poised to spearhead the next round of nuclear negotiations, but insists on strict constraints. Zero enrichment is still their bottom line. Now, it remains to be seen whether Tehran will bite. The offer may be costly—but so is the alternative.

</excerpt>

In the middle of the night of June 13, Israel made a brazen military assault deep within Iran—an operation it once feared was impossible to carry out. Code-named Operation Narnia, the synchronized attack involved years of planning, intelligence amassing, and rigorous pilot training.

The highlight of the attack was Israel’s precision strike on Tehran, which Israeli forces referred to as “Red Wedding”—a haunting nod to the violent ambush scene in the TV show Game of Thrones. By the time it was over, Israel had assassinated several of Iran’s most senior military leaders in a shock to the region.

Years in the Making

Israeli air force and intelligence officials had been training for this moment for decades. Pilots worked hard to manage long-distance missions. Spies constructed clandestine networks across international boundaries. The mission required complete secrecy and impeccable timing. A leak as small as a whisper could have spell doom for the mission.

‘Red Wedding’: The Tehran Strike

At midnight, the Israeli military’s highest-ranking generals gathered in a bunker under air force headquarters. From there, they observed Israeli warplanes dive down upon Tehran. The precise stage—”Red Wedding”—aimed at Iran’s high command echelon. Within a few hours, more than 1,000 miles away from Israeli territory, Iran’s highest-ranking military brass were dead.

The operation delivered accuracy that mirrored the fantasy massacre it was named after. Even after years of preparations, the final implementation almost fell apart. Israel used devious deceptions to achieve surprise. Just at the last minute, a wild card attacked the timing of the mission. Still, the cover held. The planes attacked before Iran was able to respond.

Devastation in Iran

Photos from Iranian media indicated clouds of smoke rising above Tehran. A satellite image showed destruction at Iran’s Ghadir facility. Iran set up memorials for the commanders who were killed. Iran’s defenses did not expect the magnitude and coordination of Israel’s attack.

Long Road from Warnings to Action

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu had been warning the world for decades. Already in 1996, he spoke to the US Congress of the threat of a nuclear Iran. Now, in 2025, he sat and watched as Israel launched one of its most daring attacks in recent history.

The raid not just undermined Iran’s military command but also reshaped Israel’s hidden extension. Operation Narnia demonstrated that with time, training, and accuracy, even the most protected adversaries are exposed.

Tehran first denied any deal, then confirmed military operations stopped at 4 am.
</excerpt>

Iran ceasefire talks took a confusing turn after Iranian foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi denied any agreement shortly after US President Donald Trump announced a truce between Israel and Iran.

Speaking on X, Araghchi declared, “As of now, there is NO ‘agreement’ on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations.”

Iran Ceasefire Denial Followed By Confirmation

At first, Iran rejected Trump’s ceasefire announcement and insisted that it had not received any formal proposal. Araghchi explained that Iran would halt attacks only if Israel stopped its aggression by 4 am Tehran time. “However, provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4 am Tehran time, we have no intention to continue our response afterwards,” he wrote.

As Iran has repeatedly made clear: Israel launched war on Iran, not the other way around.

Minutes later, Araghchi confirmed the ceasefire and announced that operations stopped at 4 am. “The military operations of our powerful Armed Forces to punish Israel for its aggression continued until the very last minute, at 4am. Together with all Iranians, I thank our brave Armed Forces who remain ready to defend our dear country until their last drop of blood, and who responded to any attack by the enemy until the very last minute,” he posted on X.

Israel mostly stayed silent. Hebrew media reported that Prime Minister Netanyahu supports Trump’s ceasefire if Iran halts missile strikes.
Iran announced the ceasefire just hours after launching missiles at the US al-Udeid Air Base near Doha. Trump confirmed that the attack caused no injuries. After the strike, Trump declared on Truth Social that both sides had secured a ceasefire. “CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE… for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!” he wrote.

Trump explained that Iran would start the ceasefire, and Israel would follow 12 hours later, officially ending what he called “THE 12 DAY WAR.”

</excerpt>

A group of 290 Indian students safely landed in New Delhi after Iran temporarily opened its airspace to allow their evacuation as part of India’s Operation Sindhu. This humanitarian gesture was made specifically for Indian students caught in the growing conflict in West Asia, with Iran cooperating closely with Indian authorities to ensure their return.

Students Moved from Tehran to Mashhad for Safety

Most of the evacuated students were from Jammu and Kashmir. As the situation worsened in Tehran due to increased Israeli airstrikes, they were first shifted to Mashhad, a safer city, before being flown home. The evacuation flight on Friday night was operated by Iran’s Mahan Air.

The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association expressed its gratitude in an official statement, “Heartfelt thanks to the Government of India, Ministry of External Affairs, and all concerned authorities for their timely intervention and support. A great relief for families who had been anxiously awaiting their return.”

More Flights Planned to Bring Students Home

This was the first of three flights arranged jointly by India and Iran to evacuate Indian students from the conflict zone. According to Javed Hosseini, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi, “We are cooperating with India in the evacuation. Indian nationals were first moved to a safer place and then assisted with onward arrangements. Three Mahaan Air flights will bring them home.” He further stated, “Airspace is closed, but a special exception has been made for Indian students.”

Evacuation Amid Ongoing Conflict

These evacuation efforts follow days of heavy fighting and aerial strikes exchanged between Iran and Israel. Before the current flight, 110 Indian nationals had already been brought back via a route passing through Armenia and Doha.

More Students Returning from Turkmenistan

Another special private flight is expected to land in India tomorrow at 3 AM, bringing back 56 Indian students from Turkmenistan, routed through Jeddah. These students belong to different states, including 47 from Uttar Pradesh, 5 from Gujarat, 3 from Delhi, and 1 from Rajasthan.

The explosions, which happened about 3:50 p.m. local time, billowed thick plumes of smoke into the air. At least five columns of smoke were seen going up from Iran’s capital city from the east and southeast areas, witnesses said.

Soon after the attack, the Israeli army owned up to the assault. On X, it posted, “The IAF is currently striking military targets belonging to the Iranian Regime in Tehran.”

Talks are off, air defenses activated, and casualties are mounting on both sides.
</excerpt>

Israel and Iran attacked each other for a fifth straight day on Tuesday, and US President Donald Trump urged Iranians to evacuate Tehran, citing what he said was the country’s rejection of a deal to curb nuclear weapons development. Trump was due to leave the Group of Seven summit in Canada later on Monday, a day early, due to the Middle East situation, the White House said. Fox News reported he would convene his National Security Council. French President Emmanuel Macron said Trump’s early departure was positive, given the immediate objective was to get Israel and Iran to agree to a ceasefire.

“Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again! Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social media platform.

Iranian media soon reported explosions and heavy air defence fire in Tehran early on Tuesday. Air defences were activated also in Natanz, home to key nuclear installations 320 km (200 miles) away, the Asriran news website reported.

In Israel, air raid sirens wailed in Tel Aviv after midnight, and an explosion was heard as Iranian missiles targeted the country again.

Iranian officials reported 224 deaths, mostly civilians, in five days, while Israel said 24 civilians had been killed. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said nearly 3,000 Israelis had been evacuated due to damage from Iranian strikes.

Sources told Reuters that Tehran had asked Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia to urge Trump to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to an immediate ceasefire. In return, Iran would show flexibility in nuclear negotiations, according to two Iranian and three regional sources.

“If President Trump is genuine about diplomacy and interested in stopping this war, next steps are consequential,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on X. “Israel must halt its aggression, and absent a total cessation of military aggression against us, our responses will continue.”

Netanyahu told reporters on Monday that Israel was committed to eliminating threats posed by Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, adding, “If this can be achieved in another way-fine. But we gave it a 60-day chance.”

Speaking to Reuters on Friday, the first day of Israel’s assault, Trump said he had given the Iranians 60 days to come to an agreement to halt uranium enrichment and that the time had expired with no deal.

Oil prices rallied more than 2% early in Asia on Tuesday after Trump’s evacuation warning, reversing losses on Monday amid reports that Iran was seeking an end to hostilities.

Chinese Urged To Leave Israel

With security concerns growing and Israeli airspace closed because of the war, the Chinese embassy in Israel urged Chinese citizens to leave the country via land border crossings as soon as possible.

The Iran-Israel air war – the biggest battle ever between the two longtime enemies – escalated on Monday with Israel targeting Iran’s state broadcaster and uranium enrichment facilities.

Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, told the BBC that the Natanz plant sustained extensive damage, likely destroying 15,000 centrifuges, while Iran’s Fordow plant remained largely intact.

Talks between the United States and Iran, hosted by Oman, had been scheduled for June 15 but were scrapped, with Tehran saying it could not negotiate while under attack.

Israel launched its air war with a surprise attack that has killed nearly the entire top echelon of Iran’s military commanders and its leading nuclear scientists. It says it now has control of Iranian airspace and intends to escalate the campaign in the coming days.

Trump has consistently said the Israeli assault could end quickly if Iran agreed to US demands that it accept strict curbs to its nuclear programme.

“As I’ve been saying, I think a deal will be signed, or something will happen, but a deal will be signed, and I think Iran is foolish not to sign,” Trump told reporters on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in Canada on Monday.

A U.S. official said Trump would not sign a draft statement from G7 leaders calling for a de-escalation of the conflict. The draft statement says Iran must never have a nuclear weapon and that Israel has the right to defend itself.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a sharp warning, calling on civilians in Tehran to leave immediately on Monday. The message came through social media and was posted by Col. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesperson.

He stated that the area would soon face airstrikes targeting “military infrastructure.” The tone and style of the message were similar to earlier warnings issued to civilians in Gaza.

This warning comes as Israel expands its military campaign inside Iran, which began on Friday. Israeli forces claim they now have control over Iranian airspace, including above Tehran, and have bombed key oil, gas, and missile facilities.

Trump Warns of Possible War

Former US President Donald Trump also made a strong statement. He wrote on Truth Social, “Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!” While speaking at the G7 summit in Italy, he added, “IRAN CANNOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON,” reinforcing his firm stance against Tehran’s nuclear program.

Although Trump did not confirm if the US military is involved in Israel’s attacks, he hinted at action. “As soon as I leave here, we’re going to be doing something. But I have to leave here,” he told reporters.

China Advises Nationals to Leave Conflict Zone

Meanwhile, China is also reacting to the rising conflict. Its embassy in Tel Aviv advised Chinese citizens to leave Israel and neighboring areas as soon as possible. They suggested using land crossings into Jordan.

Due to the closure of Israeli airspace and the growing violence, the embassy warned of “increasing civilian casualties and deteriorating security.”

Iran Responds With Threats and Possible Nuclear Shift

In response to the strikes, Iran issued strong warnings. On Monday, the Iranian government said it might pull out of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). This treaty is a global agreement designed to stop the spread of nuclear weapons.

A government spokesperson explained that Iran was now considering “all options” because of Israel’s aggressive military actions.

Casualties Mount on Both Sides

According to Iranian officials, at least 224 people have died since Friday, most of them civilians. On the other side, Israel has reported 24 deaths and over 590 people injured.

Background: How the Conflict Grew

This latest conflict marks the most dangerous phase yet in the long-standing hostility between Iran and Israel. For years, the two countries have fought indirectly using cyberattacks, covert operations, and proxy wars.

Tensions skyrocketed after the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel. That incident triggered a wave of military action across the region. Armed groups like Hezbollah and other Iran-backed militias joined the fight, leading to direct clashes between Israel and Iran. Now, the world watches as fears grow that this could evolve into a full-blown war with nuclear risks.

Israel’s Top Target and Iran’s Supreme Leader

<excerpt>Ayatollah Khamenei is Iran’s supreme leader, now targeted by Israel in the ongoing war, and the architect of Iran’s anti-West stance.
</excerpt>

Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei is Iran’s most influential man. As its supreme leader since 1989, he runs the whole shooting match — the military, judiciary, media, and foreign policy. Following Israel’s biggest strike against Iran since the 1980s, reports now indicate Israel aimed to kill him.

But US President Donald Trump vetoed the operation, declaring it “not a good idea,” US officials said. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has since moved into a secure underground bunker in Lavizan, Tehran, with his family. As the Iran-Israel conflict enters Day 4, the man at the centre of it all remains defiant.

Khamenei’s Early Life and Rise

Born in the holy city of Mashhad, Khamenei was the son of Sayyed Javad Khamenei, a humble Islamic scholar. He studied at seminaries in Mashhad and Qom. In 1962, he became involved in the anti-Shah movement under Ayatollah Khomeini. Ayatollah Khamenei was arrested numerous times and tortured by the Shah’s secret police.

In 1981, in a Tehran mosque where he was giving an address, a bomb placed inside a tape recorder detonated beside him. It paralyzed his right arm permanently. The same year, after a political crisis, he became the president of Iran and guided the country through the Iran-Iraq war until 1989.

From Disciple to Supreme Leader

Following the death of Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989, Khamenei was the surprise selection to be the supreme leader. He was criticized by elder clerics who doubted his qualifications. But the Assembly of Experts amended the constitution to qualify him. They elevated him from “Hojjat al-Islam” to “Ayatollah” overnight.

He then tightened his grip. The office of PM was abolished, and the presidency became more powerful — but in his shadow.

Powers and Governance Style

As supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei dominates Iran’s judiciary, military, and the powerful Revolutionary Guards. He also chairs the Guardian Council, which can bar electoral candidates and invalidate laws. He makes decisions on war, peace, and national economic policy.

Ayatollah Khamenei supports what he terms an “economy of resistance.” It is designed to cut Iran’s reliance on the West and find new partnerships with China, Russia, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Political Conflicts at Home

Even though he has the power, Ayatollah Khamenei has been challenged from within. President Akbar Rafsanjani, who earlier assisted in advancing him, later advocated for talks with the West later in his life. Some feel that Khamenei never forgave him. One scholar even alleged that he “ordered the death” of Rafsanjani.

Mohammad Khatami, another reformist, advocated for social liberty between 1997 and 2005. Khamenei thwarted most of his initiatives.

Deep Hatred Toward the US and Israel

Ayatollah Khamenei is still a vociferous critic of the West. He distrusts America intensely. During his presidency in the 1980s, he swore to destroy “liberalism and American leftists.” In 2018, when Donald Trump pulled out of the nuclear agreement, Khamenei averred, “Don’t trust America.”

He dreads not military invasion but a “soft” Western cultural revolution. He believes it to be a conspiracy to unravel Iran’s theocracy.

For him, Israel and the US are synonymous enemies. He has time and again demanded Israel’s destruction, even addressing the country as a “cancerous tumour” once. In 2014, he even questioned the Holocaust, terming its occurrence as “uncertain.”

Support for Militancy Against Israel

Ayatollah Khamenei approves of armed resistance against Israel. Following the attack on Israel by Hamas in October, his aides complimented the group. He declared the raid a “destructive earthquake.” Following Israel’s April attack on Iran’s consulate in Syria, he swore revenge.

In October, he made a rare public outing following the death of Hezbollah commander Hassan Nasrallah. There, he threatened Israel “won’t last long.”

Now in Hiding, Still in Command

When Israel attacked Operation Rising Lion and assassinated three senior Iranian commanders, Khamenei retreated to an underground shelter. It is said that he is accompanied by his son Mojtaba and other close relatives. Addressing the nation in a public address, he vowed to unleash tough retaliation, stating, “The Zionist regime has set itself up for a bitter and painful fate.”

Even from behind the scenes, Khamenei continues to guide Iran’s war effort. He is not only a symbolic head of state, but the unchallenged face of Iran’s defiance.

Reports claim the depot was hit during the Israeli strikes.

Just a day earlier, Katz had warned, “Tehran will burn” if Iran continued its retaliatory attacks.

Iran Tries to Contain the Fire

Soon after the explosion, Iranian state media reported that the fire was under control. They quoted officials from the oil ministry, who confirmed the situation had been managed.

Israeli Strikes Hit Defence Ministry Buildings

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed they struck Iran’s Ministry of Defense headquarters in Tehran. This information matched reports from Iranian media.

In an official statement, the IDF said its air force launched “an extensive series of intelligence-based strikes” on several high-value targets in Tehran.

According to the statement, the strikes hit:

The Ministry of Defense building

The SPND nuclear project headquarters

Other facilities involved in Iran’s nuclear weapons efforts

The IDF also claimed that these locations were where Iran “hid its nuclear archive.”

Another Strike Hits Defense Research Body

Moreover, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported another hit on a key site. This strike targeted the Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research, a group linked to the defense ministry.

Conflict Reaches New Heights

This new wave of attacks follows strong threats from both countries. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier said he would strike “every target of the ayatollah regime.” In response, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned that more Israeli strikes would lead to “a more severe and powerful response.”

Peace Talks Cancelled

As violence increased, efforts to calm the situation suffered a major blow. A planned round of nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran was cancelled on Sunday. Iranian officials said they could not attend peace talks while Israel continued its attacks.

Dozens Reported Dead

Israel’s military operation began early Friday. Since then, it has targeted Iran’s air defense systems, nuclear facilities, and military bases. According to Tehran, these strikes killed dozens of people, including high-ranking army commanders and nuclear scientists.

</excerpt>

Israel-Iran tensions escalated on Saturday following deadly missile strikes on Jerusalem that killed three and injured dozens. In the aftermath of the attacks, Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, gave a threatening warning to Tehran, “Tehran will burn.”

The threat was issued following an urgent assessment meeting with Israel’s military chief of staff. “If (Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali) Khamenei continues to shoot missiles at the Israeli home front — Tehran will burn,” Katz stated. “Iran will pay a severe price for injuring Israeli citizens.”

Iran Retaliates with Missile and Drone Salvo again Israel

Within hours, Iran retaliated with successive waves of ballistic missiles and armed drones on major Israeli cities. Air raid sirens wailed in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv as lights filled the sky. A number of buildings rattled hard, compelling residents into shelters for hours.

Although Israel’s air defense systems downed most of the projectiles, a few resulted in major damage and casualties. Multiple injuries and property damage were reported in various areas by authorities.

This escalation is taking place amid the Israeli-Palestinian war in Gaza, which was ignited by the attacks of October 7 by Hamas. The recent attacks added to the climate of fear and uncertainty already engulfing Israeli society.

Netanyahu: We Will Eliminate Iranian Threat

On Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reinforced his government’s determination to neutralise any Iranian threat. “Israel is not actively seeking regime change in Tehran,” he said, “but we would certainly welcome it.”

Netanyahu also urged Iranian citizens to stand against their regime, saying the current leadership poses a threat not only to Israel but to the region at large.

Fear of Full-Scale Regional War Grows

The two countries have signaled that military action is imminent. Diplomats from world powers have yet to dampen the violence. Experts are cautioning that the conflict could escalate into a full-blown war if either side does not retreat.

While the world waits with bated breath for possible escalations, the global community insists on restraint — but with limited success on the ground.

</excerpt>

The fact that the Israel Iran conflict escalated with a new and potentially perilous phase of hostilities in which the IDF confirmed that Tehran sent more than 100 drones into Israel, flying in retaliation for a wide-scale Israeli airstrike against Iranian nuclear and military installations earlier today.

All flights were barred from Jordanian airspace, marking wider regional instability, while the drone attack is still gathering pace with a sharp escalation in hostilities after months of underlying tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear initiative and atomic threats.

Iran Responds with Airstrikes

The Israeli military said Iran struck back with “over 100 drones” that targeted several sites within Israel. Brig. Gen. Effie Deffrin, the IDF spokesman, verified that Israeli defenses actively intercepted the incoming threats.

Iran had threatened in advance, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and military leaders vowing an “embittering and painful” future for Israel after the airstrikes.

Israel’s Air Campaign

Earlier today, Israel initiated “Operation Rising Lion,” attacking about 100 targets in Iran. The attack included more than 200 fighter aircraft targeting nuclear sites such as Natanz, missile manufacturing plants, and high-ranking military commanders.

Confirmations have come of the fatalities of high-ranking officials like IRGC commander Gen. Hossein Salami and military chief Gen. Mohammad Bagheri. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu referred to the raids as pre emptive and conducted for national survival.

Jordan Closes Its Skies

Jordan acted quickly in response to the intensifying war by closing its skies to all civilian traffic. Its civil aviation agency put caution into practice to “avoid any infringement of its airspace or let its country turn into a battle zone”. Other neighbors, such as Iraq, also shut down air traffic, disturbing global air routes.

Security tensions have spread to the region. Iran and Israel both shut down their airspace, while Iraq also issued flight bans. This move grounded global aviation: airlines including Emirates, Lufthansa, Air India, and flydubai diverted or canceled flights. China told its citizens in both nations to remain vigilant .

The drone attack capped a perilous ratcheting up triggered by Israel’s mass aerial assault in response to concerns about Iran’s nuclear drive. The sudden shift toward bulk drone reprisal underscores the thin line and the risk of broader confrontation.

What’s Next?

These events portend a spreading of the conflict. Israel threatened more attacks. Iran’s threats to hit back, combined with airspace closures, reveal an unstable and uncertain environment. Diplomatic breakdowns—particularly over nuclear negotiations—may complicate de-escalation.

World leaders called for restraint, but preparation on each side to launch offensive action shows profound alarm. The world now waits to see either brutal escalation or rapid de-escalation.

</excerpt>

Three Indians from Punjab went missing in Iran, prompting a serious diplomatic effort from the Indian Embassy in Tehran. The three missing men, named as Hushanpreet Singh of Sangrur, Jaspal Singh from SBS Nagar, and Amritpal Singh from Hoshiarpur, went missing on May 1 soon after landing at the Iranian capital.

The embassy strongly raised the issue with officials with Iran, calling for the tracing of the individuals at an urgent pace and their return safely. The incident has been a source of worry, with the embassy reassuring families that everything is being done to ensure the safe return of their relatives.

Embassy Steps Up Diplomatic Pressure

Indian Embassy officially confirmed the occurrence in a public social media post on X. In the announcement, the embassy indicated that it has “strongly” raised the matter with the Iranian authorities. It further added that it has sought immediate and coordinated action from Tehran to find the missing citizens.

The embassy has contacted the families of the disappeared men directly in addition to the diplomatic channels. They are kept updated on a regular basis by the officials on any updates and measures taken. This direct interaction is evidence of how seriously the Indian government is treating the issue.

Punjab Men Missing After Arrival in Tehran

Though the official release of the embassy did not mention the names of the missing Indians, news channel NDTV has revealed their identities. The three men are all from the state of Punjab. Hushanpreet Singh belongs to Sangrur, Jaspal Singh is from SBS Nagar, and Amritpal Singh is a resident of Hoshiarpur.

They went missing on May 1, just days after arriving in Tehran, according to the report. There has been no word or confirmed sighting since then. The full disappearance is leaving their families and Indian authorities concerned for their well-being and safety.

Urgent Need for Answers

The silence from the three men and the lack of information about their disappearance have attracted attention on both sides. Though the Iranians have yet to make any official statement, it is now up to their authorities to probe urgently and openly.

With each passing day, the anxiety builds. The more the silence, the more grave are the concerns. India has made its intentions amply clear—its citizens need to be located and returned safely.

This case lends emphasis to prompt international intervention when lives are in question. With the embassy in full play and pressure mounting, the expectation is that Iran will move quickly to resolve the case.

The US urged Iran to avoid escalation, warning of consequences if it retaliates, while Saudi Arabia condemned Israel’s actions and called for restraint to de-escalate rising tensions in the region.
</excerpt>

In the wake of Israeli airstrikes that targeted various locations in Iran, Tehran has pledged a “proportional” response. Over the weekend, Israel confirmed it conducted “precise” strikes on Iranian targets as retaliation for an attack that occurred on October 1. Following these developments, explosions were reported in five areas of Tehran, leading to a temporary suspension of flight operations within the country.

An official from Iran, speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, asserted that the nation is prepared to retaliate against what it perceives as Israeli aggression. The official emphasized Iran’s right to respond to any hostile actions, declaring, “There is no doubt that Israel will receive the appropriate response to any move against Iran.” The statement further warned that any Israeli action would elicit a “harsh, proportional, and well-calculated” response.

The Iranian state news agency IRNA reported that Iran’s air defense system successfully intercepted most of the attacks and noted that the Israeli strikes resulted in “little damage.” The Iranian air defense command criticized Israel’s “adventurous actions,” insisting that these aggressions occurred despite prior warnings.

In response to Iran’s threats of retaliation, the White House issued a statement calling for an end to direct military exchanges between Israel and Iran. A senior official warned Tehran of potential “consequences” if it chooses to retaliate. The official stated that the Biden administration believes the Israeli operation should effectively conclude any immediate conflict, with support from other allies.

US President Joe Biden received a briefing on the situation on Friday, and Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin engaged in discussions with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant to obtain updates and reaffirm the US commitment to Israel’s security.

Additionally, Saudi Arabia condemned the Israeli strikes, labeling them a violation of sovereignty and international law. The Kingdom urged all involved parties to exercise maximum restraint and work toward de-escalating the ongoing conflict.

The earthquake’s proximity to Iran’s nuclear plant and rising tensions with Israel have fueled the rumors.
</excerpt>

On the night of October 5, Iran experienced a 4.5 magnitude earthquake in the city of Aradan, Semnan province. Strangely, a mild earthquake was also recorded in Israel shortly after, raising eyebrows. The tremors were felt in Tehran, about 110 kilometers from the epicenter.

Nuclear Test Rumors Spark

The proximity of the earthquake to a nuclear power plant in Iran has led to speculation on social media that it could have been an underground nuclear test. The epicenter was located at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers, adding to the suspicion that this might not be a natural earthquake.

Rising Iran-Israel Tensions

The earthquakes come amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, following a missile attack by Iran on October 1. Given the ongoing hostility, many are speculating that the tremors could be linked to Iran’s nuclear activities.

Nuclear Test or Natural Earthquake?

While no official confirmation has been provided, the shallow depth and the proximity to nuclear facilities have fueled ongoing speculation about whether Iran conducted an underground nuclear test.

Public Sentiment and Attendance

Visuals from the event show millions of Iranians flocking to the Imam Khomeini prayer grounds to partake in the Friday prayers led by Khamenei. The gathering underscores the collective sentiment within Iran amidst ongoing tensions in the region.

Commemoration of Hezbollah Leader

Khamenei’s sermon follows a prayer ceremony held for Hassan Nasrallah, the head of the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah, who was recently killed in an airstrike. This context adds another layer of significance to the sermon, as it reflects Iran’s ongoing commitment to its allies in the region and its stance against perceived threats.

As the situation develops, Khamenei’s sermon is expected to provide crucial insights into Iran’s military and political direction in response to escalating conflicts, particularly concerning its relationship with Israel and its support for regional allies.

Concerns over escalating tensions in the Middle East have prompted several international airlines to suspend their flights to the region. Among them, Air India has announced an indefinite halt to its services to and from Tel Aviv. The suspension, effective immediately, was implemented due to heightened conflict between Iran and Israel.

Air India, in a statement on X, said, “In light of the current situation in parts of the Middle East, we have suspended our flights to and from Tel Aviv with immediate effect.” This decision follows increased tensions after the assassination of key leaders from militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah, which has fueled fears of a broader regional conflict.

In view of the current situation in parts of the Middle East, scheduled operation of our flights to and from Tel Aviv are suspended with immediate effect until further notice. We are continuously monitoring the situation and are offering a full refund to…

— Air India (@airindia) August 9, 2024

Other airlines have also adjusted their flight schedules in response to the deteriorating situation. Air France has extended its suspension of flights between Paris and Beirut until August 11, while Delta Airlines has halted its services between New York and Tel Aviv until August 31. Additionally, the Algerian airline has temporarily suspended flights to and from Lebanon until further notice, and a German airline has announced it will avoid Iranian and Iraqi airspace, suspending flights to several Middle Eastern destinations, including Tel Aviv, Tehran, and Beirut, through August 13. Singapore Airlines has also rerouted flights to avoid flying over Iranian airspace.

These suspensions come amid growing concerns over a potential Iranian retaliation following the killing of a top Hamas leader in Tehran. The assassination has escalated tensions between Israel and Iran, with Iran blaming Israel for the attack and vowing a strong response. Leaders from Hezbollah, Hamas, and other groups have also pledged retaliation, raising fears of a regional war and sparking international efforts to prevent further violence.

Adding to the rising tension, Russia, an ally of Iran, issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) prohibiting flights from departing Russian airports to Israeli airports during nighttime hours. This restriction, effective from August 9 to at least August 16, may be extended further as Tehran prepares for a possible attack on Israel. Meanwhile, leaders from the US, Egypt, and Qatar have called on Israel and Hamas to engage in negotiations on August 15 to finalize a Gaza ceasefire and a hostage release deal.

In a joint statement, the three countries said, “A framework agreement is now on the table with only the details of implementation left to conclude. There is no further time to waste nor excuses from any party for further delay. It is time to release the hostages, begin the ceasefire, and implement this agreement.”

Despite ongoing efforts, disagreements over the timing of a planned swap of Palestinian detainees held by Israel and hostages held by Hamas remain unresolved. Critics of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accuse him of delaying talks to end the war in Gaza, which began on October 7 when Hamas killed approximately 1,200 people in Israel. Since then, nearly 40,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to Palestinian agencies.

The recent assassination of a top Hamas leader in Tehran has further complicated ceasefire negotiations, with many viewing it as a significant blow to peace efforts. While Israel has not commented on the killing, US officials believe Hamas can resume negotiations despite the July 31 assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, who had been leading talks for Hamas.

</excerpt>

Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s Security Council Secretary, arrived in Tehran on Monday for high-level discussions with Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to Russia’s Interfax news agency. This visit comes amidst escalating regional tensions following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week.

Key Meetings and Regional Tensions

Shoigu’s visit is significant given the current instability in the Middle East. In addition to meeting with President Pezeshkian, Shoigu is scheduled to confer with Iran’s national security chief and the head of the general staff. The discussions are expected to focus on the volatile situation in the region and the broader strategic partnership between Russia and Iran.

Russia-Iran Relations and Military Cooperation

Since the start of Russia’s war with Ukraine, Russia and Iran have strengthened their ties, with reports indicating substantial military cooperation. Iran has allegedly supplied Russia with ballistic missiles and one-way attack drones, which Russia is reported to have used in its conflict with Ukraine—a claim Moscow denies.

Condemnation of Assassination

Russia, along with Iran, has condemned the assassination of the Hamas leader, highlighting the potential for dangerous repercussions from such actions. The visit underscores Russia’s commitment to bolstering its alliance with Iran amidst ongoing regional conflicts.

On Wednesday, Hamas’ top political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was assassinated while attending the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian. The assassination occurred in the early hours of July 31, when an “airborne projectile” struck the building where Haniyeh was staying, killing him and his bodyguard, Wasim Abu Shaaban. The building, reserved for Iranian military veterans, was located in Tehran.

Iran and Allies Blame Israel

Both Hamas and Iran have blamed Israel for the assassination, though Israel has remained silent. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, vowed that revenge was “our duty” and warned that Israel had “prepared a harsh punishment for itself.” Iran’s Revolutionary Guard also issued a stark warning of a “harsh and painful response” from Iran and its allies.

Immediate Regional Reactions

The assassination has prompted widespread anger and condemnation from Iran and its allies. Iranian President Pezeshkian pledged to defend the country’s honor and sovereignty, while Hamas’ armed wing threatened “enormous consequences” for the entire region. Iran’s Supreme Leader reiterated that Israel had set the stage for its own punishment, and other nations, including Qatar and Egypt, also criticized the killing, highlighting their roles as mediators in ongoing ceasefire negotiations.

Potential Iranian Retaliation

The assassination has led to heavy rhetoric, with reports indicating that Iran’s Supreme Leader has ordered a direct strike on Israel in retaliation. This decision emerged from an emergency meeting of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Experts predict that Iran will retaliate, possibly using its proxies, such as Hezbollah, to target significant Israeli military installations rather than civilian infrastructure.

Impact on Regional Stability

An Iranian response, whether direct or through proxies, could have severe implications for the already volatile West Asian region. The assassination complicates Gaza ceasefire talks and increases the risk of broader conflict. Despite the need for retaliation, analysts suggest that Iran is unlikely to seek an all-out war with Israel, given the potential consequences and strategic considerations.

Broader Implications

The assassination of Haniyeh underscores the fragile and explosive nature of the geopolitical landscape in West Asia. Any significant escalation could further destabilize the region, making diplomatic efforts and peace negotiations increasingly challenging. The international community remains watchful, as the situation evolves and the risk of wider conflict looms large.

Background on Hamas and Iran-Israel Tensions

Hamas, a Sunni organization, has strong ties with Shia-majority Iran, despite their sectarian differences. Iran’s support for Hamas is part of its broader strategy to influence regional dynamics and counter Israeli actions. The assassination of Haniyeh, a prominent figure in the Palestinian resistance, has heightened tensions, with Iran poised to respond in a manner that could redefine the balance of power in the region.

In defiance of increased security measures put in place as part of a violent crackdown on women-led rallies, Iranian mourners flocked to Mahsa Amini’s grave on Wednesday to mark 40 days since her passing.

Iranian security forces fired guns and launched tear gas at protesters in Saqez, the home town of Mahsa Amini, following commemorations for her death on Wednesday, the Hengaw rights group said.

“Security forces have shot tear gas and opened fire on people in Zindan square, Saqez city,” Hengaw, a Norway-based group that monitors rights violations in Kurdistan, said on Twitter.

“Woman, life, freedom” and “Death to the dictator”, hundreds of men and women chanted at the Aichi cemetery in Saqez, Amini’s home town in the western province of Kurdistan, in videos shared online.

Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman of Kurdish descent who was arrested by the infamous morality police for allegedly violating the Islamic dress code for women while visiting Tehran with her younger brother, passed away on September 16, three days after her imprisonment.

The strongest wave of protests to shake the Islamic republic in nearly three years began last month after anger erupted during her funeral. The movement has been spearheaded by young ladies and schoolgirls who have engaged security personnel on the street while burning their hijabs.

Overnight, Saqez’s officials tightened security, stationing officers in the city’s main square and apparently blocking off the city’s entrances.

Despite this, mourners went to her graveside early on Wednesday to mark the completion of 40 days since her passing and the completion of the customary Iranian period of mourning.

In videos posted online by activists and human rights organisations, they can be seen travelling along a highway, across fields, and even across a river in vehicles, motorcycles, and on foot.

Hundreds of mourners had gathered at the cemetery located eight kilometres (five miles) outside Saqez, in images that the Hengaw rights group told AFP it had verified.

Videos of a teen protesting in Tehran against the compulsion for women to wear a hijab, or headscarf, only hours before she died, have appeared online amid the country’s fourth week of intense protests.

The adolescent girl is shown in a video holding a burning headscarf while standing on a dumpster in the street while wearing all black. The girl throws the burning headscarf to the ground after waving it around. Death to the dictator, reportedly referring to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is being chanted by the protesters around her.

She was identified as Nika Shakarami, and hours after the rally, she apparently went missing.

According to her family, they found her body at the mortuary 10 days after she went missing, reported the BBC. It further reported that the family was only allowed to see her face for a few seconds just to identify her.

In an interview with the BBC, the victim’s mother said that she is also against compulsory hijab.

Following Mahsa Amini’s murder in custody, protests in Iran have resulted in the deaths of more than 100 people so far.

Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman who was jailed for allegedly breaking the law requiring women to dress modestly and wear hijabs, was pronounced dead on September 16. The largest wave of public unrest to hit Iran in nearly three years resulted from this. Security personnel and Iranian protestors engaged in violent clashes.

The unrest sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini grew more intense for a sixth day when, on Thursday, protesters torched police stations and vehicles in Tehran, the capital of Iran, as well as numerous other cities around the nation. Mahsa Amini, 22, passed away last week after the morality police arrested her for not wearing a hijab.

The worst demonstrations in Iran since 2019 have spread to at least 50 cities and villages as a result of Mahsa Amini’s death.

According to Reuters, a second police station in Tehran’s capital city was set on fire.

Iran banned internet access when there was no sign that the demonstrations were abating. Women have been a significant part of the protests, and several of them have waved or burned their hijabs or cut their hair in public.

Protests erupted in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman. Amini died in hospital on Friday, three days after being arrested and beaten by morality officers, according to reports.

Protesters gathered outside the hospital where Amini was being treated at first. According to the Guardian, security forces used pepper spray on the protesters, and several of them were arrested.

Amini’s body was transported on Saturday to her native Kurdistan province for burial.

Hundreds of people attended Amini’s funeral in his hometown. Some yelled anti-government slogans like “death to the dictator!”

Protest videos have gone viral on social media.

Amini was visiting Tehran on Friday when she was arrested by morality police for violating the country’s hijab law. According to reports, she was beaten up in the detention van. The police, on the other hand, believe Amini died of a heart attack.
