</excerpt>

Hours after an Air India aircraft, having 242 passengers onboard, crashed in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, Tata Group on Thursday announced ₹1 crore compensation to the kin of those killed in the crash.

Air India and Tata Sons Chairman Expresses Grief and Assurance

Air India and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, in a post on X, extended his “deepest condolences” to the families of those who lost their lives in the crash.

He said that Air India’s primary focus at the moment was to support the people affected and their families. Chandrasekaran added that the airline was doing “everything in our power” to provide support and care to all those.

“We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and to provide all necessary support and care to those impacted,” Chandrasekaran added.

We are deeply anguished by the tragic event involving Air India Flight 171.

No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones, and with those who have been injured.

Tata Group will…

Air India Chairman said the group will share more information once it verifies the details and revealed that they have established an emergency centre and support team to pass information to the victims’ families.

Ahmedabad police commissioner G S Malik told Reuters that they have retrieved over 204 corpses from the accident site, which may include people both on board the plane and on the ground.

Air India Arranges Relief Flights for Victims’ Families

Two relief flights are being organized by Air India for the families of the victims and the crew members. The first flight will fly from Delhi to Ahmedabad at 11 pm on Thursday. The second flight will fly from Mumbai to Ahmedabad on the same schedule. Flights will also operate from Ahmedabad to Mumbai and Delhi.

Several Tata Group companies have quietly become key suppliers for Tesla, which dominates nearly half of the global electric vehicle market. Tata AutoComp, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Technologies, and Tata Electronics are already supplying crucial components to Tesla. If Tesla establishes a manufacturing facility in India, these companies will likely see even greater business opportunities.

Moreover, reports confirm that these Tata firms have secured global contracts with Tesla, contributing significantly to India’s $2 billion worth of supplies to the automaker in FY24. To enhance its supply ecosystem, Tesla has also encouraged its existing suppliers to explore setting up manufacturing units near its production centers.

Tesla Prepares Indian Suppliers for Future Expansion

Tesla is taking proactive steps to develop a strong supplier base in India. A top industry source told ET, “Tesla is, in a way, readying the supplier base in India. We are very sure that once Tesla starts manufacturing here, Indian suppliers will benefit from sourcing opportunities.”

As part of this effort, Tesla’s senior procurement executives have met with multiple suppliers to discuss the production of various components, including:

Castings and forgings

Electronics and fabrication materials

Wiring harnesses

Electric motors and gearboxes

Sheet metal components

Suspension systems

Electric powertrains

Ball and ceramic bearings

These discussions indicate that Tesla is actively planning to expand its sourcing beyond China and Taiwan.

Tata Group’s Growing Role in Tesla’s Supply Chain

Each Tata company plays a distinct role in Tesla’s supply network:

Tata AutoComp supplies advanced EV components.

Tata Technologies provides end-to-end product lifecycle management services.

TCS delivers circuit-board technologies.

Tata Electronics will manufacture semiconductor chips once its production facility becomes operational.

Given these existing contributions, these Tata companies stand to benefit significantly if Tesla moves forward with manufacturing operations in India.

Tesla Evaluates Tax Benefits Before Entering India

In addition to strengthening its supply chain, Tesla is carefully analyzing India’s tax incentives and duty exemptions before making a final decision on local production. Since Tesla enforces strict confidentiality agreements with suppliers, the specifics of component sourcing remain undisclosed.

Nevertheless, reports suggest that Tata Electronics will supply critical vehicle control systems, including printed circuit board assemblies for Tesla’s battery management systems, motor controllers, and door control mechanisms.

Meanwhile, Tesla has expanded its partnerships with several other Indian suppliers, including Samvardhana Motherson, Suprajit Engineering, Sona BLW Precision Forgings, Varroc Engineering, Bharat Forge, and Sandhar Technologies.

Notably, Tesla’s procurement from Indian suppliers reached $1.7-1.9 billion in FY24, and experts predict this figure will continue to rise in FY25.

Tesla Shifts Focus Away from China

Following the supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 crisis, Tesla has implemented a strategy to reduce its reliance on China. Consequently, the company has instructed suppliers catering to markets outside China to establish production units in other regions, with implementation expected to begin next year.

Although Tesla produces certain key components in-house—such as electric motors, battery packs, and chargers—it continues to rely on international suppliers for subassemblies and specialized components. Moreover, Tesla maintains strict secrecy regarding its supplier relationships.

Tesla in Talks with Multiple Indian States for Manufacturing Facility

In a significant move, Tesla has begun discussions with Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Telangana to explore potential sites for a manufacturing plant. If Tesla sets up a factory in India, it will not only expand its market presence but also create more business opportunities for Indian suppliers.

As Tesla continues to strengthen its supplier base in India, industry analysts believe that Indian firms will play an increasingly important role in Tesla’s global production strategy.

Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, which holds a significant 66% stake in Tata Sons, is expected to be appointed to the board of Tata Sons. This appointment will make Noel the only member of the Tata family to serve on both the Tata Sons and Tata Trusts boards. He will be one of three nominees from Tata Trusts on the Tata Sons board, alongside Venu Srinivasan and Vijay Singh.

Anticipated Move by Tata Group Observers

Noel’s appointment has been widely anticipated, especially given his previous consideration for the role of chairman of Tata Sons. Speculation about his leadership began in 2011 when discussions emerged about him potentially succeeding Ratan Tata. Further rumors resurfaced when Noel became a trustee of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust in 2019 and later the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust in 2022. Despite this, the role of chairman was ultimately given to Cyrus Mistry, who is Noel’s brother-in-law, and later to the current chairman, N Chandrasekaran.

Separate Leadership Roles Due to Governance Rules

Even with Noel joining the Tata Sons board, Chandrasekaran will remain as chairman. Tata Sons has a policy, set out in its Articles of Association (AoA), that prevents the same individual from holding the chairmanship of both Tata Sons and Tata Trusts at the same time. This rule was implemented to avoid any conflicts of interest and ensures that Noel, who is 67 years old, will not take over as chairman of Tata Sons. Ratan Tata was the last person to hold both positions concurrently.

Structure of Tata Sons Board and Influence of Tata Trusts

According to Tata Sons’ AoA, the Trusts are allowed to nominate up to one-third of the directors on the board of the holding company, as long as they hold at least 40% of the company’s shares. Directors nominated by the Trusts also have veto power over decisions made by the board. Currently, the Tata Sons board comprises nine directors, including two executive directors (one of whom is Chandrasekaran), three non-executive directors (which include Venu Srinivasan and Vijay Singh), and four independent directors from outside the company.

Noel Tata’s Key Roles Within the Tata Group

In addition to his role in Tata Trusts, Noel Tata holds leadership positions across multiple Tata Group companies. He is the chairman of Trent, Voltas, Tata Investment Corporation, and Tata International. He also serves as vice-chairman of Titan and Tata Steel. His connections to the Tata family are further strengthened through his marriage to Aloo Mistry, the sister of the late Cyrus Mistry. The Mistry family itself holds a significant stake in Tata Sons.

The Tata family’s influence on the group spans generations. Noel’s father, Naval Tata, was the chairman of Sir Ratan Tata Trust and also served as deputy chairman of Tata Sons. His mother, Simone Tata, was a director of Tata Industries until her retirement in 2006. Noel’s half-brother, Jimmy Tata, is a trustee of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, and Noel’s three children, Leah Tata, Maya Tata, and Neville Tata, are actively involved in leadership roles across five trusts associated with the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust.

With Noel Tata’s appointment to the Tata Sons board, the family’s legacy continues to play a significant role in shaping the future of the Tata Group, while adhering to the company’s governance principles that separate the chairmanship of Tata Sons and Tata Trusts.

</excerpt>

Ratan Tata, the renowned industrialist, embodied the spirit of 86 spring seasons, always sporting a smile reminiscent of pleasant weather. He passed away around 11 PM on October 9 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. While Ratan Tata was born to Naval Tata, the secretary of the Aviation Department at Tata Sons Group, it’s surprising to learn that before Naval, none of his ancestors had any connection to the surname ‘Tata,’ not even any prominent businessmen.

Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937, just two years after Naval Tata became the joint managing director of Tata Mills. At that time, Naval’s father, Hormusji, worked as a spinning master at the Tata Group’s Advance Mills in Ahmedabad but had no ties to the Tata family. A significant turning point in Naval’s life occurred in 1917, and his story is quite remarkable.

Early Life and Challenges

Naval Tata was born on August 30, 1904, into a middle-class family in Mumbai (then Bombay). Tragically, his father passed away when Naval was just four years old, plunging the family into a financial crisis. Following this loss, Naval and his mother relocated from Mumbai to Navasari, Gujarat, where job opportunities were scarce. To support the family, his mother began a small embroidery business, barely making ends meet while worrying about Naval’s future.

A Fortunate Turn of Events

Naval’s luck changed when he was sent to the JN Petit Parsi orphanage for education and support. There, he completed his primary education. At the age of 13 in 1917, Navajbai, the wife of Sir Ratan Tata (the son of the renowned industrialist and philanthropist Jamshedji Nasarwanji Tata), visited the orphanage. She was impressed by Naval and decided to adopt him, thus integrating him into the Tata family and granting him the surname ‘Naval Tata.’

Rise in the Tata Group

After joining the Tata family, Naval Tata’s fortunes began to improve. He had always excelled academically, graduating in Economics from Bombay University before studying accounting in London. In 1930, at the age of 26, Naval Tata joined Tata Sons Group as a Clerk-cum-Assistant Secretary. His career progressed rapidly, leading to promotions.

By 1933, he had moved to the Aviation Department as Secretary and later served as an executive in the textile unit. In 1939, he became the Joint Managing Director of Tata Mills, and two years later, he was appointed as a director at Tata Sons. In 1961, Naval Tata took on the role of chairman of the Tata Electric Company, and the following year, he became the deputy chairman of Tata Sons.

A Life of Service

Reflecting on his past, Naval Tata once stated, “I am grateful to God that he gave me the opportunity to experience the pain of poverty. This shaped my character more than anything else in the later years of my life.” In 1965, he assumed the chairmanship of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, dedicating the remainder of his life to social service.

Personal Life

Naval Tata married twice; his first wife was Sooni Commissariat, with whom he had two children, Ratan and Jimmy Tata. The couple divorced in 1940. In 1955, he married Swiss businesswoman Simone Dunoyer, and they welcomed a son, Neol Tata. Naval Tata battled cancer and passed away on May 5, 1989, in Mumbai (Bombay).

This milestone makes Tata Group the first Indian conglomerate to reach such a valuation. The group encompasses over 100 companies, spanning various industries from salt to airlines, and has 26 publicly traded stocks.

A Historic Foundation Established in 1868

Founded in 1868, the Tata Group is among India’s oldest industrial enterprises. Its operations extend across six continents and over 100 countries, with sales in 150 nations. Notable companies under the Tata banner include TCS, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, and Titan.

A Major Global Employer

As of FY2023, the Tata Group employed more than 1.02 million people worldwide, with TCS alone accounting for 615,000 of those employees, positioning the group as one of the largest employers globally.

Ratan Tata’s Enduring Impact

Ratan Tata led the Tata Group for over 20 years, elevating it to global prominence through significant acquisitions, including Tetley, Corus, and Jaguar Land Rover. His leadership helped shape modern Indian industry and made substantial contributions to the nation’s economy.

Tributes and Condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, referring to Tata as a “visionary leader” and a “compassionate soul.” Tata Sons, which held two-thirds of its shares in Tata-led charity funds, transformed into a vast corporation under his guidance.

A Legacy of Innovation

Ratan Tata graduated from Cornell University in 1962 and began his journey with the Tata Group shortly thereafter. He assumed leadership of the group in 1991, driving its global expansion through acquisitions and launching iconic vehicles like the Indica and Nano.

</excerpt>

In 2013, Ratan Tata disclosed that during his initial days at Harvard University, he felt “confused” and “humiliated” as a new student, anxiously “crossing out day by day” on his calendar, yearning to return to the “normal world.”

Tata Recounts Early Harvard Days

Reflecting on his early weeks at Harvard, Tata recounted the overwhelming experience of attending the prestigious institution. “It was the only time in my life where I sat and crossed out day by day how many days were left before I could return to the normal world,” he shared.

Tata participated in the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School (HBS) in 1975. He was invited to speak at the dedication ceremony for Tata Hall in Boston, named in his honor.

Tata Hall, a seven-story building made of glass and limestone, offers residential and educational space for HBS’s executive education program. He described his first weeks at Harvard as “confusing,” admitting he felt “humiliated” by the remarkable accomplishments of his peers, according to a report from the Harvard Gazette.

“But what it did do for me, as I soon found out, was that the confusion sort of disappeared, and I understood the magnitude of what I had learned in a manner that I believe is not possible to do in places other than at this Business School,” he explained. Looking back, he stated, “As I look back, those 13 weeks were probably the most important 13 weeks of my life. They transformed me and my perspective.”

As an architect, Tata envisioned Tata Hall to be warm and welcoming to guests and as open and transparent as possible. “Can the building touch the ground lightly?” he had asked the building’s architect.

In 2010, Tata Companies, along with the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Tata Education and Development Trust, contributed $50 million to HBS. Construction of the building commenced in December 2011. Tata Hall features 179 bedrooms, two classrooms with 99 seats each, three gathering areas, and conference rooms for over 9,000 students engaged in the prestigious Business School’s executive education program annually.

Harvard’s dean, Nitin Nohria, remarked, “Although our School has welcomed international students since its very first class in 1908, Tata Hall represents by far the most significant gift made by an international alum.”

A heartwarming video of Ratan Tata celebrating his 84th birthday with a simple cupcake and a young man by his side recently went viral, captivating the internet. This young man, Shantanu Naidu, shares a special mentor-protégé bond with Tata, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons. His journey from a compassionate engineer to a close aide of one of India’s most revered industrialists is a story of passion, persistence, and purpose.

A Tragic Incident Sparked an Initiative to Protect Stray Dogs

Shantanu Naidu, a Pune University graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, began his career with the Tata Group as a Design Engineer. His life took a turn when he encountered a tragic scene on his way home—a stray dog lying lifeless after being hit by a vehicle. As an animal lover, Naidu was deeply moved by the incident and resolved to find a solution to prevent such accidents.

Naidu, with the help of friends, designed reflective collars for stray dogs to make them more visible to drivers at night. Their efforts paid off when they received messages the very next day, confirming that the collars had saved lives. This simple idea turned into a larger mission, but the initiative struggled due to a lack of funding.

The Life-Changing Letter to Ratan Tata

Naidu’s father, aware of Ratan Tata’s love for dogs, encouraged him to reach out to Tata for help. Hesitant at first, Naidu wrote a handwritten letter detailing his initiative. Two months later, he received a life-changing response. Tata, moved by the effort, not only praised the project but also invited Naidu to meet him.

Shantanu Naidu left India to pursue an MBA at Cornell University but made a promise to Ratan Tata that he would return to work for the Tata Trust. True to his word, Naidu came back, and shortly after, Tata offered him a role as his assistant. Naidu, humbled and excited by the opportunity, accepted without hesitation.

Describing Tata as a mentor and a friend, Naidu affectionately refers to him as the “Millennial Dumbledore,” a name that captures Tata’s wisdom and humility. Over the years, Naidu became Tata’s trusted companion, often accompanying him in public appearances.

Entrepreneurial Spirit and Social Impact

Naidu’s project, Motopaws, which began with reflective collars for stray dogs, has now expanded to 20 cities across four countries. He is also the author of I Came Upon a Lighthouse, a book recounting his experiences with Ratan Tata. In addition, Naidu started ‘On Your Sparks,’ an initiative offering entrepreneurial advice to young people, with all proceeds going towards Motopaws.

Tata Sons has allocated Rs 750 crore for this ambitious endeavor, with Rs 650 crore dedicated to infrastructure, design, and interior work, and Rs 100 crore reserved for site development.

In exchange, the state government will provide the necessary land for the temple museum on a 90-year lease for a nominal fee of Rs 1. The tourism department’s land in Majha Jamthara, a village near the river Saryu, will be handed over to Tata Sons. Officials stated that a 25-acre parcel of land would be transferred to Tata Sons, and an agreement outlining the terms and conditions will be signed. Tata Sons expressed interest in the project and submitted their proposal to the central government, which then forwarded it to the state for final approval.

Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have shown personal interest in the project, reviewing concept notes and presentations from various stakeholders and government officials. In November last year, architect Brinda Somaya visited the proposed site in the temple town to draft a preliminary outline. Somaya, known for renovating Bombay House, the Tata Group’s headquarters in Mumbai, has been integral to the project. The temple museum is envisioned as a major tourist attraction in Ayodhya, featuring at least 12 different galleries.
