</excerpt>

Congress plans major reshuffle, appointing new state chiefs in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu soon.

NEW DELHI: Even as Congress is carrying out Sangathan Srijan, focusing on massive reshuffling across the country within the organisation, sources said that in the coming days, the grand old party will get new state unit chiefs in several states, including Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
During its extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting — the party’s highest decision-making body — held in Belagavi, Karnataka, in December last year, Congress had decided to carry out a massive reshuffling.
The party had already signalled its intentions with several appointments earlier this year and by appointing observers in Gujarat, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh.
The source said that in Haryana, where the party is yet to decide on the CLP even eight months after last year’s Assembly polls, the new state unit chief will soon be announced.
Uday Bhan has been leading the party for several years and led the grand old party into last year’s assembly polls, where it failed to wrest power from the BJP.
However, in the Lok Sabha elections, the party performed well, winning five out of the 10 seats in the state.
The source said the party leadership has decided to adopt a new formula for Haryana, focusing on OBC and Jat communities, instead of the decade-old Jat and Dalit formula.
Several leaders are said to be in the race for the state unit chief post as well as the CLP leadership.
Among the OBC leaders considered is Chandrabhushan, a former IAS officer who defeated Kuldeep Bishnoi’s son, Bhavya Bishnoi. Other names under consideration include Nirmal Singh, Kuldeep Vats, among others.
The source added that if former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has a say in the CLP decision, the state unit chief might be the leadership’s choice.
The party is also working on replacing the Himachal Pradesh unit chief. Pratibha Singh, wife of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, currently holds the position, but the party is now looking for a fresh face to lead in the state.
A similar situation exists in Tamil Nadu, where the party plans to appoint a new chief ahead of next year’s Assembly polls.
The source also highlighted that the party leadership is focusing on changing both the in charge and state unit chief in Uttar Pradesh.
The source claimed the party is looking for an OBC face for the replacement, although many party leaders have remained tight-lipped about the developments in Uttar Pradesh.

</excerpt>

PM Narendra Modi’s remarks at the inauguration of Tamil Nadu’s Pamban bridge sent a sharp message to the state’s opposition. In a veiled jab at CM MK Stalin, PM Modi suggested that some politicians “cry without any reason.” He implied that the opposition’s complaints were baseless. The comment responded to MK Stalin’s criticism of the central government, especially over delimitation and the third language issue. While the opposition raised concerns, PM Modi highlighted the central government’s substantial financial aid and investment in Tamil Nadu, especially in rail infrastructure.

Prior to 2014, the state only got Rs 900 crore per annum for the construction of railways, but now the amount has risen to more than Rs 6,000 crore. This increased funding covers the modernization of 77 railway stations, with major stations such as Rameswaram getting an upgrade. The Rameswaram station, crucial for tourism and religious significance, will see improved safety and better passenger services, boosting local economies. His remarks aimed to highlight the Centre’s strong commitment to Tamil Nadu’s development, suggesting that opposition criticisms were unjustified given the substantial financial support directed towards infrastructure projects.

PM Modi also focused on the success of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). “Under the scheme, 4,000 kilometers of roads have been built in Tamil Nadu in the last decade,” he said. This infrastructure development has improved rural connectivity, especially in remote areas, and strengthened Tamil Nadu’s infrastructure. The success of PMGSY shows the central government’s role in driving progress despite political tensions between the state and the Centre.

PM Modi’s remarks, though pointed, highlight the central government’s significant investments in Tamil Nadu. They urge the opposition to reconsider their criticisms. Despite political tensions, the Centre remains committed to reshaping Tamil Nadu’s infrastructure.

Inaugurated by PM Modi, the 2.07-km Pamban Bridge promises enhanced connectivity and engineering excellence.
</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the much-awaited new Pamban Bridge in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, April 6, coinciding with Ram Navami. This engineering marvel is India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge, built to boost connectivity across the Palk Strait and replace the aging structure built in 1914.

Stretching 2.07 kilometers, the newly constructed bridge connects Rameswaram Island to mainland India and is set to revolutionize rail and maritime transport in the region. The older Pamban Bridge, a cantilever structure with a Scherzer Rolling Lift span, had become outdated due to increasing traffic and environmental wear.

Sanctioned in 2019, the new bridge was developed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) under the Ministry of Railways. Designed to withstand the harsh marine environment, it incorporates advanced construction techniques and materials including stainless steel reinforcements and high-grade protective paints.

Key Features & Innovations

One of the standout aspects of the bridge is its 72.5-meter navigational span, which can be raised by 17 meters to allow larger vessels to pass. The structure is also 3 meters taller than its predecessor, improving sea and rail connectivity simultaneously.

Another notable advancement is its future-ready substructure, designed to accommodate two railway tracks, although currently, it supports a single line. The bridge’s Auto Launching Method and hydraulic jacking system were pivotal in placing the lift span across the piers with precision, especially given the environmental challenges like cyclones and turbulent waters.

Modern Engineering Meets Tradition

“This bridge symbolizes the union of tradition and innovation,” officials stated, noting how the project not only boosts infrastructure but also preserves the cultural and spiritual importance of the area. Tourists and pilgrims heading to Rameswaram will now enjoy faster, safer, and more efficient travel.

A Symbol of Infrastructure Progress

Built to last over 100 years, the new Pamban Bridge is being hailed as a symbol of India’s growing engineering capabilities, drawing comparisons to global landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge and Tower Bridge. It reflects the country’s commitment to overcoming logistical, geographical, and environmental hurdles through innovation and determination.

With the inauguration just around the corner, the Pamban Bridge stands ready to usher in a new era of connectivity, technology, and national pride.

</excerpt>

Ahead of the first Joint Action Committee meeting scheduled for Saturday with several Chief Ministers and political leaders, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin emphasized the importance of fair delimitation. He stated that the issue extends beyond the number of parliamentary seats and directly impacts the rights of the state.

Delimitation and Its Impact on Tamil Nadu

Stalin highlighted the urgency of the matter in a video message posted on X, explaining why his party, the DMK, has been actively raising concerns about delimitation. “Fair delimitation is the talk of the town right now. Why has the DMK brought this to focus? Because in 2026, delimitation will happen. And if the delimitation exercise is carried out based on population, our representation in Parliament will be severely affected. This is not just about the number of MPs but about our State’s rights. This is why we have convened a meeting of all parties. Except the BJP, every other party stood together as one,” he said.

His remarks reflect Tamil Nadu’s ongoing opposition to the process, as many in the state fear that basing seat allocation on population size could significantly reduce their representation in Parliament.

Conflict with the Central Government

The Tamil Nadu government, under Stalin’s leadership, has been at odds with the Central government over various issues, including the proposed three-language policy in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the upcoming delimitation process.

To strengthen opposition against the delimitation exercise, Stalin called for a meeting of the Joint Action Committee on March 22 in Chennai. He invited leaders from multiple political parties to come together and resist what he described as a “blatant assault on federalism.”

Additionally, Stalin reached out to the Chief Ministers of seven states, including both those aligned with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and opposition-ruled states, urging them to unite against what he termed an “unfair exercise.”

Chidambaram Warns of Seat Reduction for Southern States

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram also expressed serious concerns about the consequences of delimitation. He warned that if the process proceeds as planned, southern states could lose a significant number of Lok Sabha seats, which would diminish their influence in national policymaking.

“Delimitation is a serious issue. It was frozen in 1971. A census taken after 2026 will lead to delimitation, followed by re-determination of the seats. According to our calculation, if it is redistributed according to the current population of states, and the state’s numbers are changed, our southern states, which have 129 seats, will come down to 103. The five southern states will lose 26 seats, whereas the populous states where population is growing will gain seats, especially UP, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan,” Chidambaram explained.

His statement underscores the growing concern that states like Tamil Nadu, which have successfully controlled population growth, may be unfairly penalized, while states with higher birth rates stand to gain parliamentary seats.

With leaders from multiple parties raising alarm over the potential consequences, the upcoming meeting in Chennai is expected to be a significant step in shaping the opposition’s response to the delimitation exercise.

The move comes amid tensions between the DMK and the BJP over language policies, especially the NEP. BJP leaders criticize the change, accusing the DMK of undermining national unity and constitutional values.
</excerpt>

Tamil Nadu has substituted the rupee symbol (Re) with a Tamil letter (Ru) in the advertisements for the 2025/26 state budget, to be tabled on Friday morning. This has set off a major political controversy, mainly between the ruling DMK and the BJP central government.

Chief Minister MK Stalin published the new logo on X, bringing out the change, which is set against the background of Hindi imposition controversy on the issue of the national language, and specifically on the three-language requirement of the new National Education Policy (NEP). The DMK opposition to Hindi imposition has been a long-standing controversial topic, with the Tamil Nadu government refusing Tamil in its place instead of the imposition of Hindi.

There has been no official word from the Tamil Nadu administration regarding the substitution, but DMK chief Saravanan Annadurai spoke up in defense of the move, saying, “There is nothing illegal about it. this is not a ‘showdown’. We give importance to Tamil. that is why the government went ahead with this.”

Tamil Nadu government replaces the Rupee symbol with a Tamil language symbol representing the same on its Tamil Nadu Budget 2025-26. The previous Budget carried the Indian currency symbol ₹

The BJP, however, criticized the move strongly. Narayanan Thirupathy, a state unit spokesperson of the BJP, accused the DMK of attempting to dissociate from the country and divert attention from its failures. The state unit president of BJP, K Annamalai, described the decision as “stupid” and pointed out that the rupee symbol has been designed by the son of former MLA of the DMK at one time.

The DMK Government’s State Budget for 2025-26 replaces the Rupee Symbol designed by a Tamilian, which was adopted by the whole of Bharat and incorporated into our Currency.

Thiru Udhay Kumar, who designed the symbol, is the son of a former DMK MLA.

How stupid can you become,… pic.twitter.com/t3ZyaVmxmq

— K.Annamalai (@annamalai_k) March 13, 2025

The move also comes against the backdrop of an ongoing “language war” between the DMK and the BJP, particularly with regard to the NEP. Tamil Nadu has been resisting the policy on the grounds of its existing two-language system, and the BJP said that the NEP would help students outside the state. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan alleged that the DMK was spreading a “false narrative” regarding the policy.

In addition, the row has been further kindled by Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s comments that the BJP government has contributed more to Tamil speakers than the DMK, alluding to the inclusion of regional languages in Central Armed Police Force entrance examinations.

The argument also broaches the larger subject of political battles as Tamil Nadu gears up for its state polls next year when the DMK and AIADMK will confront each other while the BJP will attempt to cut into the state.

</excerpt>

India’s first private sector trainer aircraft manufacturing facility is likely to come up in Haryana’s Hisar by the end of this year as Tamil Nadu-based Sakthi Group and Austria’s Diamond Aircraft Industries have partnered to manufacture single-engine trainer planes for flying schools across the country.

As per the information the joint venture Sakthi Aircraft Industry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Aero Club of India (ACI) to supply 200 DA40 NG trainer aircraft to Flying Training Organisations (FTOs) across the country. ACI will act as the central coordinator, managing aircraft demand, allocation, and distribution to FTOs. As part of this agreement, Sakthi will manufacture 200 aircraft exclusively for ACI.
At least 150 aircraft will be produced at Sakthi’s Hisar facility, while the remaining units will be manufactured at Diamond’s facility in Austria under a joint venture.

The first 50 planes will be imported as kits from Austria and Canada and assembled in India, while the remaining 150 will be built at a new facility, likely at the Hisar aerodrome, which is expected to be operational by the end of 2025.
The company aims to produce 100 trainer aircraft annually, with 60-70% of components being sourced locally within five years. The entire 200-plane order is expected to be completed by 2027. The Diamond DA40 NG is a modern four-seater aircraft known for its efficiency, safety, and advanced technology. According to Vaibhav D, CEO of Sakthi Aircraft Industry over the next three years total investment of the Shakthi Aircraft Industry is expected to reach Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 crore from the current Rs 500 crore in the project. Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu welcomed the development, calling it a milestone in India’s aerospace innovation and manufacturing.

With India’s aviation sector rapidly expanding, the country will need about 30,000 pilots over the next 15-20 years, up from the current 6,000-7,000. Currently, there are 38 flying training organizations in India, and more are expected to be established to meet the growing demand.

</excerpt>

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin declared his state’s readiness for “another language war.” Ironically, the real battle seems to be against understanding. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 isn’t about imposing Hindi—it’s about offering choice, flexibility, and opportunity. But to see that, one needs an open mind, not just old rhetoric.
Recently, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan addressed M.K. Stalin through an open letter, making it unequivocally clear—NEP 2020 is a transformative policy that enhances global standards in education while safeguarding India’s linguistic and cultural heritage. Contrary to the DMK’s fear-mongering, NEP does not impose any language; rather, it ensures that Tamil and all Indian languages receive due recognition. Initiatives like Kashi Tamil Sangamam, Saurashtra Tamil Sangamam, the translation of Thirukkural into 13 Indian languages, the Thiruvalluvar Cultural Centre in Singapore, and the Subramania Bharati Chair in top institutions reinforce the Modi government’s unwavering commitment to Tamil language and culture.

Education should not be politicised to fit narrow narratives. NEP 2020 expands opportunities, nurtures inclusivity, and promotes excellence. Yet, despite repeated clarifications from the Centre, Stalin dismissed the policy as a “sin” that would push Tamil Nadu “2,000 years back,” vowing to reject it even if the state were offered ₹10,000 crore. His son, Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin, has doubled down, insisting that Tamil Nadu will follow only the two-language policy. This defiance, however, is not about protecting Tamil—it is about exploiting linguistic pride for political mileage.
Stalin’s letter to PM Modi, rejecting NEP-linked schemes like Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and PM SHRI Schools, is a blatant negation of cooperative federalism. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan rightly called out the DMK’s tactic of “spinning progressive reforms into threats” to sustain political narratives. Tamil Nadu’s DMK leadership is not just rejecting a policy—it is actively denying its students the chance to compete in a rapidly evolving world.
The DMK’s refusal to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the three-language formula isn’t about protecting Tamil identity—it is cynical political posturing at the cost of the state’s children. In a rapidly evolving India, where multilingualism is a gateway to cognitive development, cultural integration, and global opportunities, Tamil Nadu’s obstinate resistance to NEP 2020 is both regressive and self-defeating.

The three-language formula is not an imposition but an opportunity. It respects linguistic diversity while equipping students with the skills needed for a competitive world. Learning their mother tongue, English, and an additional language empowers children to thrive in an interconnected global economy. Yet, Stalin’s government continues to peddle false narratives, deliberately ignoring the fact that the policy does not mandate Hindi—or any particular language—but instead allows states the flexibility to implement it as they see fit.
Extensive research confirms that the ideal age to introduce additional languages is between five and eight, when a child’s cognitive grasp is at its peak. However, Tamil Nadu’s DMK leadership, fixated on outdated linguistic politics, is robbing an entire generation of this advantage. Stalin’s rhetoric of Tamil pride serves as a convenient shield to mask the real agenda—denying government school students the same opportunities that elite private schools, including those run by DMK leaders, openly embrace.

The irony is glaring. Stalin’s own daughter runs a CBSE school that follows the three-language policy. At least a hundred schools managed by top DMK politicians in Tamil Nadu follow the same framework. Yet, their government blocks government school students from similar benefits, perpetuating an educational divide that favours the privileged while keeping the underprivileged locked out of opportunities.
While even non-BJP states have embraced NEP 2020 for its transformative potential, Tamil Nadu risks becoming an educational outlier. Instead of fostering progress, the state’s leaders are isolating their youth from national and global advancements. This resistance is not about preserving Tamil culture—it is about exploiting regionalist sentiments for political survival.

Tamil Nadu’s defiance of NEP 2020 is a direct attack on the aspirations of its younger generation. It is a betrayal of social justice, a move that widens the gap between the privileged and the disadvantaged. Education should be about empowerment, not political expediency. The people of Tamil Nadu are beginning to see through this deception, and when the time comes, they will hold the DMK accountable for choosing politics over the future of their children.

BJP’s K. Annamalai defended the three-language policy, while slamming the DMK’s education stance
</excerpt>

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin criticized the BJP-led Union government on Monday for attempting to impose Hindi on Tamil Nadu. He also highlighted the government’s failure to allocate adequate funds to the state.

Neglect of Tamil Nadu in Union Budget

Stalin pointed out that Tamil Nadu was ignored in the Union Budget. The state didn’t receive necessary funds, even after the recent cyclonic disaster. “The Union Government has not allotted funds to us in the union budget, and even Tamil Nadu’s name is not there in the budget,” Stalin said. He also mentioned that the central government only released SDRF funds, despite Tamil Nadu’s appeal for more support.

Opposition to Hindi Imposition

Stalin strongly opposed the Union government’s push for Hindi imposition. He emphasized that education, which was previously under the state’s control, has now been moved to the concurrent list. Stalin made it clear that Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister would not accept this. “The Union government is trying to impose Hindi, and our Chief Minister will not accept it. Please don’t impose Hindi on us,” he said.

Saravanan Annadurai Critiques BJP’s Stance

DMK leader Saravanan Annadurai also criticized Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai for supporting Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s statement on the New Education Policy (NEP). Annadurai argued that studying Hindi was unnecessary for Tamil Nadu. He added that Annamalai was a “puppet” of the RSS leadership. “Annamalai is indebted to the RSS high command… He was made the chief of TN BJP so that he could be a puppet in those hands,” Annadurai stated.

The Futility of Learning Hindi

Annadurai questioned the value of learning Hindi, stressing that the people of Tamil Nadu are well-educated and globally connected. “Why should we read Hindi? What’s the use of studying Hindi? Will it make us become a doctor? There is absolutely no use in studying Hindi,” he said.

Kanimozhi Supports Language Freedom

DMK MP Kanimozhi also spoke against forced language policies. She emphasized that people should be free to choose their language. “All those in the BJP should understand the difference between taking a language as a preferred language and studying it when there is no other way,” Kanimozhi explained. She also criticized the BJP for forcing Sanskrit on students, replacing the previous focus on German. “What is the benefit of studying Sanskrit? Language imposition is what the Union government is doing,” she said.

Annamalai Defends Three-Language Formula

BJP’s K. Annamalai responded by defending the three-language formula. He pointed out that private schools, including those attended by children of Tamil Nadu ministers, are already teaching a trilingual curriculum. “Private schools where the sons, daughters, or grandchildren of Tamil Nadu ministers study can teach trilingualism. Shouldn’t government schools teach it too?” Annamalai said.

Annamalai Critiques DMK Education Policy

Annamalai also accused the DMK government of sticking to an “outdated” education policy from the 1960s. He criticized the state for not adopting a modern approach to education. “The world is developing rapidly, and what is the point of imposing your outdated policy of the 1960s?” he added.

The Ongoing Debate Over Language Policy

Annamalai’s comments followed Stalin’s criticism of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Stalin had earlier accused the Union government of ignoring Tamil Nadu’s linguistic diversity while pushing the three-language policy.

Heavy rains drenched Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, on Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, these showers marked the closing phase of the Northeast Monsoon.

Weather Conditions in Chennai

By 7:30 am, Chennai recorded a temperature of 24°C, while the air quality index (AQI) stood at 74, reflecting satisfactory air conditions. According to the Sameer app, the city’s environment remained relatively clean despite the weather disruptions. Moreover, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) forecasted moderate rain with light thunderstorms until 10 am, affecting Chennai and several neighboring districts, including Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, and Puducherry.

Rainfall Spreads Across Tamil Nadu

Meanwhile, heavy rain lashed Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, and Tenkasi. Additionally, moderate rain occurred in areas like Villupuram, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai. Consequently, waterlogging in various regions disrupted traffic flow and caused difficulties for daily commuters.

Meteorological Factors Behind the Showers

The rainfall resulted from an atmospheric low-level circulation over the southwestern Bay of Bengal near the Tamil Nadu coast. This phenomenon, typical for December and January, signals the tail-end of the monsoon. Furthermore, the rains arrived shortly after the state’s vibrant Pongal celebrations, adding a seasonal twist to the weather.

Rain to Persist Temporarily

The IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall will continue for the next two days across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. However, beginning January 22, the region is expected to transition to dry weather conditions.

Chennai’s Forecast

Chennai is likely to experience a partly cloudy sky on Sunday, with chances of moderate rain or thunderstorms. While the minimum temperature will hover around 22°C, the maximum is expected to reach 28°C. Consequently, residents are advised to remain cautious of waterlogging and plan their activities accordingly.

Strict regulations ensure safety as participants vie for prestigious prizes, continuing a centuries-old Tamil tradition.
</excerpt>

The globally renowned Jallikattu event commenced in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai on Tuesday, marking the start of a three-day celebration of bull-taming traditions. The first event, held at Avaniyapuram village, featured a thrilling contest with 1,100 bulls and 900 bull-tamers. This cultural extravaganza promises exciting prizes for the winners, including a tractor worth Rs 11 lakh for the best bull and a car worth Rs 8 lakh for the best bull-tamer.

High Stakes and Rigorous Safety Measures

The first day of the Madurai Jallikattu was a spectacle of skill, strength, and tradition. The upcoming events at Palamedu and Alanganallur on January 15 and 16, respectively, are expected to continue the intense competition. To ensure the event runs smoothly and safely, the district administration has put in place strict rules and security measures.

According to the guidelines set by the Madurai district administration, each bull can participate in only one of the three competitions. Moreover, bulls must be accompanied by their owners and a familiar trainer to ensure proper handling during the event. To further streamline the process, all bull-tamers and bull owners must register online via the official district website, madurai.nic.in, where documents are thoroughly verified.

Jallikattu: A Deep-Rooted Tradition in Tamil Nadu

Jallikattu is an ancient and vibrant bull-taming tradition that holds deep significance in Tamil culture, particularly during the festival of Pongal. The event involves the release of a bull into a crowd of people, where participants attempt to grab the bull’s hump and stop its movement. The roots of Jallikattu date back to 400-100 BCE, where the practice was first observed by the Ayar community in Tamil Nadu. The term “Jallikattu” comes from the words “Jalli,” meaning silver and gold coins, and “Kattu,” meaning tied.

Global Recognition and International Participation

Madurai’s Jallikattu events, especially those held in Alanganallur, are recognized internationally as a celebration of Tamil heritage and rural valor. This year’s festival has garnered attention not only from across the country but also from international enthusiasts who recognize the significance of this cultural spectacle. With thousands expected to participate and witness the event, the 2025 Jallikattu competitions in Madurai are set to make an indelible mark on global audiences.

A Record-Setting Year for Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu

Earlier in the week, the first Jallikattu event for 2025 took place at Thachankurichi village in Pudukkottai district, which is renowned for hosting numerous bull-taming events. Between January and May, Pudukkottai typically organizes over 120 Jallikattu events, alongside more than 30 bullock cart races and 50 vadamadu (tethered bull) events. These festivities highlight the state’s rich rural traditions and its deep-rooted connection to bull-taming practices.

As the competition continues across various locations in Tamil Nadu, including the grand finale in Alanganallur, the excitement around Jallikattu is expected to only intensify, showcasing not only the thrill of the sport but also the region’s rich cultural heritage.

</excerpt>

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated India’s first-ever glass bridge in Kanyakumari on December 30, 2024. The Rs 37-crore project connects two of the region’s most renowned landmarks: the Vivekananda Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar statue.

A Stunning Visual Experience

The 77-metre-long, 10-metre-wide bridge is designed to provide visitors with an unparalleled experience, offering a transparent glass surface that gives breathtaking views of the sea below. The Chief Minister shared a video of the bowstring-shaped bridge on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, showcasing its intricate design and panoramic surroundings. During the inauguration, Stalin also took a walk across the bridge, further highlighting its unique features.

A Landmark Project for Kanyakumari

The bridge project, undertaken by the Tamil Nadu government, coincided with the silver jubilee of the Thiruvalluvar statue’s unveiling by former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

The bridge not only enhances the visual appeal of the area but also provides a more accessible and scenic route between the two iconic monuments. Visitors can now walk leisurely between the Vivekananda Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar statue, replacing the previous ferry service. This also shortens travel time and offers an enjoyable alternative.

Durable and Resilient Design

The tribute comes shortly after Ratan Tata’s passing on October 9, 2024. Known for his compassion and love for dogs, Tata’s bond with animals was an integral part of his life.

The statue features:

Ratan Tata in a blue shirt and grey trousers.

A German Shepherd holding a ball in its mouth, shaking hands with Tata.

This artistic homage not only celebrates Tata’s professional legacy but also his personal warmth and affection for his furry companions.

Crafting the Masterpiece

Aishwarya Bakeries, famous for its annual tradition of creating edible sculptures, poured their hearts into this project.

Ingredients Used:

250 eggs.

60 kilograms of sugar.

Artistic Process:
The intricate design and lifelike details attracted crowds who eagerly posed with the stunning creation.

Social Media Reactions

The statue became a sensation online, with users sharing their thoughts:

The tribute sparked admiration nationwide, reflecting the bakery’s effort to immortalize Tata’s memory.

Ratan Tata: A Legacy of Love and Leadership

Beyond his professional milestones, Ratan Tata’s deep affection for animals was legendary.

Notable Story:
Tata once canceled a meeting with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace to stay with his critically ill dog. Indian businessman Suhel Seth shared this story, quoting Tata: “I can’t leave him and come.”

</excerpt>

It may sometimes be very overwhelming when losing a loved one. More so, when the same is at such a hard time. During the moment of grief, the fulfillment of their final wishes becomes a holy task. An inspiring act took place in the Madurai district of Tamil Nadu by a family. The same family made the woman’s funeral a celebration with her as she had requested it in the last moments.

Nagammal, 96, the widow of temple priest Paramathadevar from Usilampatti, breathed her last. Before death, she made a very different demand: Nagammal wanted her funeral to be a dance of songs, not a funeral with tears. The widow of Paramathadevar left behind three generations of descendants – two sons, four daughters, and 78 grandchildren – and was always a reason for fun for them.

As her death approached, Nagammal wished for her grand funeral with her family relatives performing for her, thereby celebrating her life. She wished to be remembered with all the happiness by her family. It was indeed granted to them as they had planned for a lively and jovial farewell replete with traditional folk music and dances including the Kummi dance done by women from the village, and even the littlest in the family came up and performed.

96 வயதில் காலமான பாட்டியின் ஆசையை நிறைவேற்ற பேரன் பேத்திகள் செய்த ஏற்பாடு..!#Madurai | #OldLady | #Death | #Dance pic.twitter.com/cxk7VfN7bG

What started as a serious funeral ended up being a lively celebration, almost like a fair in a village. The family members, from her grandkids to great-grandkids, all said their goodbyes to Nagammal according to her wish. It ended with the traditional sad songs, but the general atmosphere was celebratory.

The community appreciated the family as it fulfilled Nagammal’s last wish by bringing out a generally sombre event into a celebration of how long and joyful her life had been. This has become a positive example in a very traditional community, known mainly for its funeral rites.
On social media, photographs and videos of the funerals went viral and attracted debate on how natural deaths were supposed to be celebrated with honor and positivity.

The authorities claimed that anything placed in the “hundi” becomes the property of the deity.

About The Incident

Dinesh, a resident of Vinayagapuram, visited the Arulmigu Kandaswamy Temple in Thiruporur last month. While offering money, he accidentally dropped his iPhone into the hundi. He immediately asked temple officials to retrieve it. However, they explained that offerings in the hundi are considered gifts to the deity and cannot be returned.

Efforts to Recover the Phone

Frustrated, Dinesh contacted the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) Department. He requested to be informed when the hundi would be opened. On Friday, he rushed to the temple after learning that the hundi was finally opened.

Despite his efforts, the authorities stood firm. They stated that the phone was now the deity’s property. However, they allowed Dinesh to remove the SIM card to retrieve important data.

Temple’s Explanation

The temple’s executive officer justified their decision. “We are not clear whether he [Dinesh] dropped it [iPhone] as an offering and later changed his mind because the hundi is well protected by an iron fence,” he said.

The Outcome

Dinesh, who had already replaced his SIM card, decided not to argue further. He left the phone with the temple authorities and walked away.

This incident reflects the temple’s strict adherence to tradition. Even accidental contributions to the hundi are treated as offerings, leaving devotees with limited options.

During his sojourn, he made use of the meals served to him and ran a bill amounting to Rs. 39,298. He left the place without clearing the said amount. The hotel management alerted the local police to catch John. The investigations proved that John had deceived many hotels in Kollam, Thane and Delhi from the year 1996.

According to Money Control, 49 cases were registered against him in India and abroad. Additionally, John has a prior conviction and was imprisoned for five years for the same crimes. After his last arrest when he was detained for robbing the County Inn hotel in Manipal, the judges ruled to keep him in judicial custody for another 14 days as investigation continues.

Police Superintendent Dr. Arun K explained that Bimsent John hails from Tamil Nadu and had rented a room in County Inn. “He had cases against him in Delhi, Maharashtra, Kerala, and other places,” the Superintendent said, during interrogation we found that he used to stay in star hotels and cheat them. He knows good English and wears smart clothes to hoodwink hotels. He has been doing this since 1996, and 49 cases have been registered against him,” Public TV reported.

In a similar case earlier this year, Jhansi Rani Samuel was arrested for allegedly scamming a Pullman Hotel in Delhi’s Aerocity for nearly Rs. 6 lakh. The hotel staff reported that Samuel had used a fake identity card under the name Isha Dave to access the spa. She also took advantage of services worth Rs. 2,11,708, claiming to pay through the ICICI Bank UPI app, though it was later revealed that the payments were never processed.

She has been changing her statements. She also told one of the investigators that she is a doctor. She then said she had lived in New York. We don’t know what to believe. We have asked local staff at her hometown to approach her family and provide us details of her job and parents/spouse,” police said.

Samuel, who had stayed at the luxury hotel for 15 days without paying her bills, became aggressive when staff attempted to stop her from leaving. She claimed to be married but later said she had divorced.

Puducherry has been severely impacted by the torrential rains associated with Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall that night. The heavy downpours have disrupted normal life across the union territory, with visuals showing vehicles partially submerged on the streets. The region is currently experiencing a flood-like situation, prompting the Indian Army to launch rescue operations. Since 6:15 AM on December 1, over 100 people have been evacuated.

Chennai Garrison Battalion of the Indian Army was mobilized early Sunday

Rescue operations began at 6:15 AM, successfully evacuating over 100 individuals in the first two hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Cyclone Fengal made landfall between 10:30 PM and 11:30 PM IST, with wind speeds reaching 70-80 km/h and gusts up to 90 km/h. As of 5:30 AM, the cyclone remained stationary approximately 120 kilometers south-southwest of Chennai and is expected to slowly move westward, likely weakening into a deep depression over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry within the next six hours. A red alert has been issued for northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and parts of southern Andhra Pradesh.

Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to evacuate those stranded in the floodwaters.”

The heavy rainfall brought by Cyclone Fengal resulted in record precipitation, with Puducherry recording 48.4 centimeters of rain over a 24-hour period until 8:30 AM on December 1, marking the highest cumulative rainfall in the last 30 years.

Despite the adverse weather conditions, Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train services resumed normal operations across all suburban districts on December 1, following disruptions caused by the cyclone. The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a forecast predicting “isolated heavy to very heavy” rainfall for Chennai on Sunday, with high tides and rough sea conditions observed along the coast.

Earlier, operations at Chennai airport were halted on Saturday due to strong winds and heavy rains, leading to numerous flight cancellations and affecting hundreds of passengers. </excerpt>

In an extraordinary display of strength and determination, five-year-old Sanjeev Krishna has set a world record by walking 5 kilometers while pulling a 50-kilogram weight. This remarkable feat, recognized by the Noble Book of World Records, took place on November 7 and has garnered national and international attention, highlighting the boundless potential of young achievers.

A Rigorous Six-Month Journey of Preparation

Sanjeev’s record-breaking accomplishment was the culmination of six months of disciplined training under the guidance of his coach, Mr. S.V. Ramana. The preparation began with daily morning and evening walks of 6 to 8 kilometers, gradually increasing the distance over three months. In the subsequent months, the focus shifted to weight training, where Sanjeev started by pulling 5 kilograms and progressively built up to 50 kilograms.

Weekends were dedicated to trekking a nearby 150-foot mountain, with Sanjeev completing 7 to 8 ascents and descents per session. This combination of endurance-building and strength-focused exercises laid the foundation for his incredible performance.

The Record-Breaking Walk: From Manimangalam to Sriperumbudur and Back

The event commenced at Manimangalam Police Station, where Sanjeev began his 5-kilometer journey. He walked along Sriperumbudur Road for 2.5 kilometers before turning back to finish at the same police station. Local authorities secured the busy highway to ensure a safe environment for his attempt.

The event was closely monitored to ensure compliance with record guidelines, involving meticulous attention to balancing the weight consistently while maintaining a steady pace throughout the walk.

The Driving Force Behind the Achievement

Sanjeev’s mother, Prasanna Gopalakrishnan, revealed that the idea for the event stemmed from a desire to improve her son’s physical health. “Sanjeev was a poor eater, and I wanted to focus on his physical development. Sports not only help in staying fit but also teach discipline, time management, and teamwork,” she explained.

Approaching Coach Ramana proved pivotal. “When we met Mr. Ramana, he introduced us to this challenge and provided the structured training that made this record possible. His support and encouragement were instrumental in helping Sanjeev achieve this incredible feat,” she added.

A Proud Moment for Tamil Nadu and Sanjeev’s Family

His father, Gopalakrishnan, expressed gratitude to everyone who supported this journey, particularly the Noble Book of World Records for recognizing Sanjeev’s achievement.

His efforts in organizing security on the busy highway ensured that the event was conducted safely and smoothly,” said Gopalakrishnan.

His daily routine already includes walking 8 kilometers with ease, showcasing his natural affinity for endurance activities.

Hosur experienced over 11 cm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, according to the Meteorological office. This surge in rainwater raised the storage levels in the nearby Kelavarapalli reservoir, leading to its discharge into the Thenpennai River, which subsequently inundated surrounding areas and caused the buildup of toxic foam.

Currently, there is no official information regarding the specific pollutants responsible for this toxic froth. However, it is suspected that industrial units in neighboring Karnataka may have discharged effluents into the river, taking advantage of the rainfall. Authorities are actively investigating the precise cause of the toxic foam.

The incident occurred when a 49-year-old guard, Ezhumalai, refused to allow the tourists to park their car in a no-parking zone.

Incident Details

Footage of the altercation shows Ezhumalai stopping the family from entering the restricted area. Initially, they engaged in a verbal dispute, but the situation escalated quickly when the tourists exited the vehicle to confront him. Almost immediately, one woman began to slap Ezhumalai, followed by two men and another woman who joined in the assault. They violently beat him, even snatching his stick to strike him. Ezhumalai’s cries for help eventually drew the attention of nearby onlookers, who intervened.

After the incident, Ezhumalai filed a complaint against the tourists, leading to the arrest of three suspects.

Public Reaction

Journalist R. Sivaraman shared the video of the incident on X, stating, “Women tourists beat a private security personnel near Five Rathas, Mamallapuram when he asked them not to take their car to a no-parking area. One outraged user commented, “The whole family seems to be in serious mental health condition and needs immediate rehab; the first lady who started beating the guy needs shock treatment, jail then shock treatment alternatively. Others should be jailed after rehab. This is highly unacceptable. What nonsense are we witnessing? Hope the police act swiftly.”

Another user remarked, “They should be behind bars! Whatever the issue, they have absolutely no right to manhandle the security guy!” A third user noted, “The whole family seems to have anger issues… need rehab.” A fourth added, “Though fault is on both sides, physical exchanges should have been averted by the passengers (seems to be educated).
Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has stated that he will not apologize for his controversial comments about the “eradication” of Sanatana Dharma. He claims his statements were meant to address oppressive practices towards women and were misinterpreted, leading to the backlash that began in September 2023.

Context of His Remarks

During a recent event, Udhayanidhi emphasized that his views reflect those of prominent Dravidian leaders such as Periyar, former Chief Minister CN Annadurai, and M. Karunanidhi. He highlighted historical injustices faced by women, stating, “Women were not allowed to study. They were unable to leave their homes, and if their husbands died, they would have to die as well. Thanthai Periyar spoke against all of this. I echoed what Periyar, Anna, and Kalaignar said.”

Controversy Erupts

Udhayanidhi sparked significant controversy in September 2023 when he compared Sanatana Dharma to diseases like “dengue” and “malaria,” asserting that it should be eradicated rather than just opposed. Speaking at the ‘Sanatana Abolition Conference,’ he claimed that Sanatana Dharma contradicts social justice and equality. His remarks prompted criticism and protests, especially from BJP and Hindu groups, leading to multiple legal cases against him.

Refusal to Apologize

Udhayanidhi defended his statements, saying, “But my words were twisted. Not just in Tamil Nadu, cases were filed against me in several courts across India. They asked me to apologise, but I stand by what I said. I’m the grandson of Kalaignar, and I will not apologise.” He affirmed his commitment to face the legal challenges ahead.

Allegations of Hindi Imposition

Additionally, Udhayanidhi accused the central government of trying to impose Hindi in Tamil Nadu, citing recent changes to the state anthem as evidence. He claimed that certain words were intentionally removed during a Doordarshan Tamil broadcast, igniting further controversy.

He urged new parents to choose beautiful Tamil names for their children, reiterating, “Because many are attempting to impose Hindi in Tamil Nadu. They couldn’t do it directly. That’s why they are omitting a few words from the Tamil Thaai Vaazthu (State song). They are trying to impose Hindi via the new education policy. But they are all failing.”

Political Background

Udhayanidhi, a 46-year-old DMK leader and former state sports minister, was appointed Deputy Chief Minister on September 30. His promotion was reportedly delayed due to the controversy surrounding his comments on Sanatana Dharma.

Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin, called on the people of the state to give their children Tamil names to resist efforts to impose Hindi. Speaking at an event on Tuesday, he subtly criticized the BJP-led Central government, accusing them of pushing Hindi through the new education policy.

Opposition to Hindi Imposition

Udhayanidhi stressed the importance of preserving Tamil identity, stating, “Many are attempting to impose Hindi on Tamil Nadu.” He urged new parents to choose “beautiful Tamil names” for their children, as a stand against these attempts. He emphasized Tamil Nadu’s strong resistance, saying, “Tamil Nadu will never accept Hindi imposition.”

He also mentioned that there had been previous attempts to change the state’s name and remove words like “Dravidam” from the Tamil Thaai Vaazthu (State song). “Until the last cadre of DMK is alive, until the last Tamilan is alive, none can even touch Tamil, Tamil Nadu, and Dravidam,” he declared.

Comments on Lok Sabha Delimitation

Udhayanidhi’s remarks followed a recent statement by his father, Chief Minister MK Stalin, who reacted to the Centre’s Lok Sabha delimitation exercise. MK Stalin had joked that people might now have to consider raising 16 children to counter the delimitation process. “But whatever be the outcome, provide Tamil names to your children,” MK Stalin added.

Udhayanidhi on Sanatan Dharma Controversy

Udhayanidhi also addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding his previous comments on Sanatan Dharma, which had sparked a nationwide uproar. He clarified that his statements were based on the teachings of leaders like Periyar, Perarignar Anna, and his grandfather, Kalaignar. Despite facing legal cases across India, he stood by his words, stating, “I am Kalaignar’s grandson, and I will not apologize for anything.”

He reiterated his earlier stance, saying Sanatan Dharma should not just be opposed but eradicated, likening it to diseases like malaria or dengue that require elimination.

</excerpt>

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) reports that a low-pressure system over the east-central Bay of Bengal will likely intensify into a cyclonic storm named ‘Dana’ by October 23. This weather system is set to bring heavy rainfall to multiple districts across Tamil Nadu.

Yellow Alert Issued for Multiple Districts

In anticipation of the storm, the RMC has issued a yellow alert for various districts in Tamil Nadu. The Weather Department explains that an upper air cyclonic circulation, initially located over the central Andaman Sea, has shifted northward.

The department forecasts that a low-pressure area will form over the east-central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining north Andaman Sea within the next 24 hours. “This low-pressure system is expected to move northwestwards and reach the north-west Bay of Bengal near the Odisha-West Bengal coasts by October 24,” the department announces.

Chennai and Nearby Areas Already Seeing Rainfall

Moderate rainfall has already begun in Chennai and surrounding areas, including Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur. This wet spell will likely continue for several days, resulting in cooler temperatures.

Fishermen Warned to Avoid the Sea

Authorities strongly advise fishermen to stay off the sea due to anticipated strong winds of 35 to 45 kilometres per hour along the Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Camorin region.

Heavy Rainfall Expected in Multiple Districts

On October 21, heavy rains are forecast for the ghat regions of Coimbatore and Tirupur, as well as the districts of Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruchi, Dindigul, Madurai, Pudukottai, Ariyalur, and Perambalur.

Flood Alerts and Rising Water Levels

Authorities have issued flood warnings in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Tiruvannamalai districts, especially where the Thenpennai River flows. Officials remain on high alert due to significant rainfall in the catchment areas of the Krishnagiri Reservoir Project (KRP) dam, which has led to the release of 2,000 cusecs of water. The flood alert also extends to the Harur and Pappireddipatti regions.

Emergency Services on Standby

Fire and Rescue Services, along with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), remain on high alert, ready to respond as ongoing rainfall raises water levels in several affected areas.
