</excerpt>

Indian paddler Archana Kamath, who recently made history as part of the Indian women’s table tennis team by qualifying for the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics, has announced her retirement from professional table tennis to pursue higher studies in the United States.

A Historic Olympic Achievement

Archana Kamath played a crucial role in the Indian women’s table tennis team’s historic run at the Paris Olympics, where they reached the quarterfinals for the first time ever. Despite their 1-3 loss to Germany, Kamath was the only Indian player to secure a game in the match, showcasing her talent on the world stage.

Decision to Retire and Pursue Studies

Just weeks after the Paris Olympics, Kamath made the surprising decision to retire from the sport. According to reports, her decision was influenced by the slim chances of winning a medal at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, a competition historically dominated by Chinese athletes. Kamath discussed her future prospects with her coach, Anshul Garg, who admitted that while it would be difficult, her mind was already made up.

“I told her that it’s difficult. It’s going to take a lot of hard work. She’s ranked outside the top 100 in the world, but she improved so much in the past couple of months. But I think she had already made up her mind to go. And once she makes up her mind, it’s difficult to change it,” Garg said in an interview with the Indian Express.

Financial Stability in Professional Sports

Kamath’s decision has sparked a broader conversation about the financial stability of professional athletes in India. While top athletes often receive ample support, Garg pointed out that upcoming players, like Kamath, face significant financial challenges despite receiving training and equipment support. This lack of financial security was a key factor in Kamath’s decision to retire.

“The top players generally don’t have any problem because they get a lot of support. But what about the upcoming players? Yes, they get support in terms of training and equipment. No expense is spared there, but what about a livelihood? That gets difficult, so Archana’s decision is understandable,” Garg added.

A Broader Issue in Indian Sports

Kamath’s retirement is not an isolated incident; many athletes in India have chosen to leave their sports careers due to financial concerns, raising serious questions about the sustainability of the Indian sports ecosystem. Kamath’s story highlights the need for better financial incentives and support systems for athletes who represent the nation at the highest levels.

As Archana Kamath embarks on a new journey in the United States, her decision to prioritize her future outside of sports serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by many professional athletes in India.

</excerpt>

In a groundbreaking experiment, DeepMind, Google’s AI company, tested the capabilities of their advanced robot by setting it against 29 table tennis players of varying skill levels. The aim was to evaluate the robot’s proficiency across different levels of play, from beginners to advanced players.

The research involved the robot competing in three-game matches with each player under standard table tennis rules, although modifications were made due to the robot’s inability to serve. The results were striking: the robot won 45% of the matches and 46% of the games overall. Specifically, it won all its matches against beginner players, lost all matches against advanced and advanced+ players, and secured victory in 55% of matches against intermediate players.

Barney J. Reed, a Professional Table Tennis Coach involved in the project, praised the robot’s performance. “Watching the robot compete with players of all levels and styles was truly impressive. Our goal was to achieve an intermediate level of play, and the robot not only met this expectation but exceeded it. The entire experience was a remarkable learning opportunity, and I’m grateful to have been part of it,” Reed said.

The experiment aimed to assess the robot’s “human-level performance” in terms of accuracy, speed, and adaptability. According to DeepMind, this study is the first of its kind to explore a robot playing a full competitive game against human opponents with no prior exposure.

This innovative research highlights the potential for AI in mastering complex tasks and provides new insights into the capabilities of robotic technology in competitive environments.

The 29-year-old showcased a masterclass performance, defeating world number 18 and home favorite Prithika Pavade 4-0 in Paris. </excerpt>

On Monday, Manika Batra etched her name in history by becoming the first Indian table tennis player to reach the singles pre-quarterfinals at the Olympic Games. The 29-year-old showcased a masterclass performance, defeating world number 18 and home favorite Prithika Pavade 4-0 in Paris. This remarkable victory came with game scores of 11-9, 11-6, 11-9, and 11-7, marking one of the most memorable matches for Indian table tennis at the Olympics.

Manika’s victory over the higher-ranked French player, Prithika Pavade, who has Indian roots, is a significant achievement. Reflecting on her win, Manika expressed her happiness, saying, “I am happy that I beat a French player in Paris. I defeated a higher-ranked player. I did not think of creating history and making the pre-quarters, there are more rounds, I will take it match by match and give my best as I always do.”

Manika’s strategy of targeting Pavade’s backhand proved effective, even though she initially planned to attack the forehand. “I had planned to play to her forehand as discussed with my coach, but I was getting the points on her backhand, so I did not change the tactics. I did play a few shots on her forehand too; I did not want her to think that I am playing only on her backhand,” she explained.

Prithika Pavade, 19, who was born in a Paris suburb to parents originally from Puducherry, had a commendable journey leading up to the Olympics. Ranked 18th in the world, Pavade had recently made her first WTT final appearance in June. However, she could not overcome Manika’s formidable challenge in this match.

The first game was closely contested, with both players exchanging points until Manika sealed it with a powerful forehand. She then dominated the second game, capitalizing on Pavade’s backhand errors. Despite Pavade’s efforts to stage a comeback, Manika’s relentless attacks on the backhand side secured her the third game and a comfortable 3-0 lead.

In the final game, Manika raced to a 10-5 lead, eventually winning the match when Pavade netted her backhand, concluding the game in 37 minutes. This victory not only marks a significant milestone for Manika Batra but also represents a proud moment for Indian table tennis on the global stage.

He also reflected on his historic World Table Tennis (WTT) Feeder title win in Beirut earlier this year.

The Paris Olympics 2024, scheduled from July 26 to August 11, will witness India’s participation in the men’s and women’s table tennis team events for the first time. Reflecting on this triumph, he highlighted its significance in boosting his confidence after overcoming injuries and a period of poor form. He also praised the competitiveness of his fellow Indian player, Manav Thakkar.
