Authorities warn downstream villages of potential flooding but note some water is draining naturally.
</excerpt>

A huge ice, mud, and rock landslide engulfed the Swiss village of Blatten on Wednesday, forming a dam behind a wall of glacial debris that held millions of cubic meters of water captive and raised the specter of catastrophic downstream flooding. The tragedy occurred after one side of the mountain behind the Birch Glacier collapsed, burying houses and blocking the River Lonza.

Blatten’s 300 residents were evacuated in advance since the mountain was unstable. Rescue operations have been looking for a missing 64-year-old man but have suspended operations temporarily because of risky conditions.

The landslide created a debris heap almost 2 kilometers wide, which blocked the Lonza River and created a lake behind it. This prompted concerns about the risk of breaking debris dam, which could trigger instant floods and order more evacuations. Officials cautioned residents in downstream villages of Gampel and Steg to prepare for potential evacuations on Thursday.

By Friday evening, authorities reported some of the water trapped behind the debris had started to seep into the resulting plug, decreasing short-term risks of flooding. Local authorities, such as Christian Studer, indicated that everything was under control and it would not worsen. In the meantime, the Swiss army is on standby with heavy equipment such as pumps and diggers to ease pressure off the river block once it will be safe to do so.

The magnitude of the devastation has stunned the local community and scientists say the event is indicative of the escalating threat posed by climate change to the Alpine region. The Swiss Insurance Association estimated the extent of the damage was in the realm of several hundred million Swiss francs but added that it was too soon for an exact evaluation. The number of insured houses in Blatten is still unknown.

Authorities continue monitoring the situation closely to protect residents and prevent further damage.

Officials cite glacier instability from climate change. Emergency crews responded swiftly, while leaders pledged long-term support and warned of similar risks across the Alps.
</excerpt>

A huge glacier breakoff in Switzerland destroyed the Alpine village of Blatten, leaving nearly all of it under rubble and one person missing. The vast Birch Glacier ruptured at about 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, sending a combination of ice, stone, and mud into the Lötschental Valley just days after authorities had issued a warning of possible instability.

Authorities had ordered the Blatten residents of 300 people out nine days ago, but a 64-year-old man, not evacuated, is still missing. “In spite of great efforts, the man is yet to be found,” Valais police said.

The accident destroyed or buried almost 90% of Blatten. Village mayor Matthias Bellwald gave an emotional speech: “The unimaginable has happened. We have lost our village, but not our hearts. Even though the village is under a massive mountain of rubble, we know where our homes and our church need to be rebuilt.”

Stéphane Ganzer, who is in charge of security for the Valais area, said it was a “major catastrophe,” while Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter expressed her sympathies, saying, “It’s horrible to lose your house. At these difficult moments, my thoughts are with the inhabitants of Blatten.”

Watch:

Cause of the Landslide

Geologists had kept a close eye on the Birch Glacier, which had been exhibiting disturbing motion — moving as much as 11 feet per day — under almost 9 million tonnes of rubbish. Government officials in the region had even airlifted 52 animals, including cows, sheep, and house rabbits, out.

On Wednesday, the glacier collapsed, dumping an avalanche of rubbish into the valley with a deafening crash. “Three million cubic meters of material had been deposited on the glacier, and then slid down into the valley,” noted Raphaël Mayoraz, who leads the canton’s Natural Hazards Service. “It is a very rare occurrence.”

Drone images showed a massive cloud of dust and rubble engulfing the valley, burying the Lonza riverbed and leaving a two-kilometre blockage that created a small lake. The impact of the collapse was felt as a 3.1-magnitude quake.

Mayoraz warned a second debris flow was still a risk: “A debris flow cannot be entirely excluded. That’s a hazard we need to keep an eye on.”

Relief Operations and Government Response

The emergency services were quick to respond. Three rescue experts were flown in, and drones with thermal cameras searched for the missing man. The Swiss army meanwhile mobilized pumps and heavy equipment to deflect flooding from the blocked watercourse.

Defence and Civil Protection Minister Martin Pfister labelled the glacier collapse a “striking proportions” disaster and promised, “We assure you of our support, today and in the weeks and probably years to come.”

Environment Minister Albert Rösti referred to the occurrence as “extraordinary” and underlined the government’s determination to reconstruct: “The government will do everything possible to give Blatten a future, although it will take a lot of effort and time.”

Climate Change’s Role in Alpine Disasters

Experts have sounded the warning repeatedly that global warming is destabilizing glaciers throughout the Alps. Switzerland lost 6% of its glacier volume in 2022 and another 4% in 2023 — the rate of loss fastest ever recorded.

Rösti observed, “Nature is stronger than humankind, as mountain dwellers know.” The permafrost that serves as a natural cement for mountain rock is also thawing, rendering the landscape more susceptible to such failures.

Similar incidents have occurred in recent years. The village of Brienz faced evacuations in 2023 and again last year due to rockslide threats. In 2017, eight hikers lost their lives when the Bondo region experienced the country’s worst landslide in over a century.

The Blatten-Goppenstein road has been closed to residents as recovery and risk evaluations remain ongoing. Authorities say recovery might take years and are not eliminating additional evacuations.

In spite of the destruction, Mayor Bellwald vowed resilience: “We will help one another and comfort one another. After a long night, it will be morning again.”

His journey, shared on Instagram, gained traction online with viewers curious about the location and amused by the trek’s intensity.
</excerpt>

Ever dreamed of ascending the world’s longest staircase? A travel YouTuber recently embarked on this intimidating challenge in Switzerland and climbed the Niesen Stairway, which follows alongside the Niesenbahn funicular railway and is a Guinness World Record holder. Nicknamed Switzerland’s Pyramid because of its inclining triangular profile, the stairway features an eye-popping 11,674 steps over 3.4 kilometers.

The hike started at dawn, as posted on an Instagram video by vlogger Tooleko. With excitement running high, he began the ascent but exhaustion set in early. “I walked faster than necessary,” he confessed, which left him winded after only 2,000 steps. The brisk pace also caused burning calves earlier than anticipated.

Despite the physical exhaustion, the vlogger was amazed by the beautiful Swiss scenery. Surrounded by green rolling hills, pine-clad mountains, and fresh alpine air, he absorbed the view of the majestic Swiss Alps rising in the distance.

At 5,000 steps, he complained of sore feet but would not give up. When he exceeded the 10,000-step boundary, the summit was finally visible. At the summit, he was treated to a stunning panorama—alpine peaks covered with snow and vistas of ancient towns such as Spiez and Interlaken, all worth the grueling climb.

Social Media Reactions

The vlogger’s post quickly caught social media’s attention, sparking questions and commentary. One user asked, “Where is it? Is it possible to camp on the top?” Another chimed in, “Why is it that so many people on Instagram never give any information about location?”

Comparisons too: “Bro, I walked to Girnar (Gujarat, India) in my 10th standard and that too 10000 steps.” And worries: “And how the hell you descend afterwards !?!?”

Built between 1906 and 1910, the Niesen funicular and its associated service stairway were initially intended to move materials and people—not public trekking. But its massive size has since become a mass tourist interest.

The public is only allowed access to the stairway for a single exclusive event—the annual Niesen Treppenlauf stair race, one of the world’s most challenging vertical runs. The registrants have to register far in advance because the 1,669-metre climb is a challenge even for professional athletes.

Switzerland Explores Legalizing Recreational Cannabis Use

<excerpt> Switzerland moves towards legalizing recreational cannabis with strict regulations to control sale and consumption.
</excerpt>

Switzerland will consider the legalization of the use of recreational cannabis after a parliamentary commission proposal on Friday. The proposed bill, voted through the lower house’s health commission by 14 to nine against and two abstentions, proposes a strictly controlled system for opening up access to adults.

Today, cannabis in Switzerland is legal only for therapeutic purposes or in instances where its tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) level does not exceed one percent. That said, numerous regions and cities have implemented pilot studies evaluating regulated non-medical cannabis sales in recent years.

Despite these initiatives, the majority of users continue to obtain cannabis illegally, the commission pointed out. Referencing a 2022 Swiss survey, it added that around four percent of people between 15 and 64 years had used cannabis illegally in the last month, showing that “cannabis is a societal reality.”

“Most of the commission finds the current state unacceptable and that the prohibitive strategy is a failure,” the commission said. It recommended the legalization of cannabis for sale and use for non-medical purposes while acknowledging its possible health hazards and calling for its schedule as a controlled substance.

This proposal is the first step in what may be a long process, needing both parliamentary approval and a possible referendum under Switzerland’s system of direct democracy.

“The law has to control the cultivation, production, and sale of cannabis, without promoting its use,” the commission stated.

State Monopoly Approach

The Swiss Hemp Interest Group (IG Hanf) referred to the move as “a historic moment for Swiss cannabis policy.” But there is still opposition, notably from the right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP). Parliament member Celine Amaudruz vehemently opposed the plan, saying that it “amounts to banalizing the dangers of the drug.”

The proposal outlines that Swiss residents over the age of 18 should be permitted to “grow, purchase, possess, and consume cannabis,” with existing protections against passive smoking applied. Sales to minors would remain prohibited.

People would be permitted to grow up to three marijuana plants for personal consumption. Commercial production would be legal, but subject to regulations and high-quality control. The packaging would have to be neutral, with no brand names, and contain warning labels.

In addition, the sale of cannabis would be controlled through a state monopoly, limiting access to licensed shops. The commission stipulated that the motive for cannabis sales should not be profit but rather channel all revenue into prevention programs, harm reduction, and addiction treatment services.

In addition, the proposal recommends enhanced punishment for illegal cannabis purchase and sale. It also seeks to implement a zero-tolerance approach to driving while intoxicated, stressing the value of public security along with legalization initiatives.

Switzerland Moves To Ban International Adoptions Over Abuse And Exploitation Fears

<excerpt>Swiss government will propose a ban after discovering serious irregularities in past adoptions. The move follows a sharp decline in international adoptions and will explore intrafamily adoption exceptions.
</excerpt>

Switzerland’s government announced Wednesday that it plans to ban international adoptions, citing past abuses in the practice. Based on findings by an independent group of experts, the government concluded that even the strictest adoption laws cannot fully prevent misconduct. Officials believe a ban is the best way to safeguard the individuals that have been and will be affected-the children.

It will present a proposal by the end of next year to be put out for public consultation. Authorities said some serious irregularities had happened in the previous international adoptions and that the number of cases has declined significantly-from hundreds annually to around 30.

This law will ensure that Switzerland considers any potential exceptions, specifically intrafamily adoptions, where children are adopted by a step-parent or a close family member. The move therefore shows that the country cares for ethical conducts in the adoption process to discourage exploitation.

Switzerland New Laws For 2025 Bans Burqa In Public, Sparks Cultural Freedom Debate

<excerpt>The new law, effective January 1, 2025, bans face coverings in public spaces, sparking global debates on religious freedom and women’s rights.
</excerpt>

Switzerland rang in the year 2025 with the introduction of several new policies, among them a contentious law banning face coverings in public, targeting the burqa. The new rule, which came into effect on Wednesday, follows a controversial “anti-burqa” initiative that was approved by 51.2% of voters in a national referendum in March 2021.

The ban forms part of a new constitutional amendment that prohibits the wearing of face coverings in public places, thus trying to minimize the visibility barriers in different settings. The federal authorities declared that anyone who will violate the law will be met with an administrative fine of CHF 100, which is easily paid online. If it is not paid, the regular legal process could result in a maximum penalty of CHF 1,000.

The law does not apply to specific scenarios: for example, on airplanes or at diplomatic and consular locations. It also permits face coverings in places of worship or other secular settings, providing exemptions for certain contexts.

The law had strong supporters with the right-wing Swiss People’s Party, which termed the law curbing “soft extremism,” not targeting Muslims, and not focused on Islam despite that. After all, still, the imposition has been reported to disproportionately have Muslim women burqa wearers in its receiving end, all because the legal action focuses directly on the symbolic theme of face coverage.

The Swiss government initially rejected the proposal as it claimed that it should not govern how women dress, but the referendum eventually won with a minimal margin. The idea was a campaign of the SVP, and human rights organizations such as Amnesty International highly criticized it since it violated “freedom of expression” and “religion” as rights of women.

The Muslim population in Switzerland is relatively low, with only about 5% of the population considering themselves Muslim. They are largely from Turkey, Bosnia, and Kosovo. Out of these numbers, only approximately 30 wear the niqab, while no women have been reported wearing the burqa. However, the law’s passage has not ended the debate concerning individual freedoms and cultural integration.

</excerpt>

Rifaat al-Assad, the uncle of ousted Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, who is facing war crime charges in Switzerland for his role in the brutal 1982 suppression of a revolt, recently flew from Beirut to Dubai, according to two Lebanese security officials. The officials noted that several members of the Assad family traveled to Dubai from Beirut, while others remained in Lebanon since Bashar al-Assad’s removal on December 8. Lebanese authorities have not received any Interpol requests to arrest Rifaat or other Assad family members.

The UAE’s foreign ministry has yet to respond to inquiries about the matter. The Lebanese officials stated they were unaware of whether Rifaat or the other Assad family members planned to stay in Dubai or travel elsewhere. Rifaat, in his late 80s, is the brother of Hafez al-Assad, the late president of Syria. He led elite forces that crushed a 1982 Muslim Brotherhood uprising in Hama, killing over 10,000 people. The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) later estimated the death toll to be between 30,000 and 40,000 civilians.

Switzerland’s Attorney General’s Office has referred Rifaat al-Assad for trial on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, citing universal jurisdiction over such offenses. He has denied any involvement. Swiss authorities had previously suggested that the trial might be postponed due to his ill health. The 1982 Hama massacre is often seen as a precursor to Bashar al-Assad’s own violent crackdown during the 2011 uprising. The 2011 rebels, led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, had referred to the Hama assault in their efforts to address long-standing grievances in Syria.

Rifaat al-Assad helped his brother Hafez seize power in a 1970 coup and served as vice president until a failed attempt to seize the presidency led to his exile. He has lived in Switzerland, Spain, and France, where he was convicted in 2020 for acquiring property through illicit means. In 2021, he returned to Syria. Lebanese officials also reported that Rifaat’s son Duraid’s wife and daughter were detained at Beirut airport for attempting to travel with tampered, expired passports.

Additionally, Lebanese Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi revealed that Bouthaina Shaaban, a senior Assad advisor, had flown out of Beirut legally, while other Syrian officials had entered Lebanon illegally and were being pursued. Lebanon’s caretaker prime minister, Najib Mikati, confirmed on Monday that Lebanon would cooperate with an Interpol request for the arrest of former Syrian intelligence officer Jamil Hassan, who faces U.S. war crimes charges under Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

</excerpt>

Switzerland and the European Union announced a landmark agreement on Friday aimed at significantly overhauling their trade relations. The deal, which touches on a wide range of sectors from electricity and transport to state aid and freedom of movement, is set to strengthen ties between the two parties and offer more stability for Swiss businesses that rely heavily on the EU.

The agreement, dubbed the biggest overhaul of trade relations in years, addresses some of the key issues that have strained relations, such as immigration concerns from the Swiss side. The deal is still facing hurdles before ratification, but it represents a major step forward from the failed attempt in 2021 when Switzerland pulled out of similar negotiations.

Swiss President Viola Amherd and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the deal at a joint news conference in Bern. “This is a landmark for the stabilization and further development of bilateral relations,” Amherd said, while von der Leyen underlined its importance, referring to the geopolitical challenges the world is currently facing.

The accord also covers a financial settlement. Switzerland‘s contribution to the EU is kept at 130 million Swiss francs per year in the transitional phase up to 2029. Switzerland will gradually raise its contribution to 350 million francs for a period running from 2030 until 2036.

The promise of greater legal certainty and stability will indeed impact the Swiss companies mainly when involved with the EU directly. The economic integration process with the bloc from among its largest export markets persists. It was as from the agreements established by them in 1972 then extended in due time with each other.

She donned a green and golden lehenga to celebrate her achievement and her Indian heritage. Speaking to HT.com, Lakshmi said it was the first lehenga she ever owned and she had worked hard to get it delivered in Switzerland for the event.

She is a graduate in law from the University of Basel, where she studied under much difficulty, particularly in terms of the German language in which the course was taught. She said, “As I was struggling with the language because it’s not my native language, I was feeling very proud after completing my bachelor’s degree…I told myself if I can complete my bachelor’s degree in a language where I am not fluent in it, then I MUST wear something special for myself.”

This idea inspired her decision to don a lehenga on the graduation day.

Half Indian and half Finnish, Lakshmi spent most of her childhood in India, which helped her keep in touch with her roots. She also developed a love for Bollywood movies. However, she had never owned a lehenga before, having only seen them in Indian fashion shows. Determined to wear something unique, she spent time browsing the internet and found a website that could deliver a lehenga to Switzerland in time for her graduation. She chose an Anisha Shetty creation through Fabilicious Fashion.

At the ceremony, Lakshmi’s classmates were fascinated by her attire. She said, “My classmates loved it! They all asked if it was traditional attire from India and I was so happy to tell them all the details! “ Though she picked a more subtle lehenga to match the occasion, it certainly stood out in Switzerland. Even though I chose a lehenga that wasn’t too flashy so that it could match the occasion, it was definitely an outfit that stood out because it’s not an outfit you see often in Switzerland, except maybe in Bollywood movies.

</excerpt>

Switzerland is set to modernize its aging network of nuclear shelters, an infrastructure increasingly viewed as essential in a volatile global climate, especially since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This initiative underscores Switzerland’s commitment to safeguarding its population of 9 million, which includes foreigners and refugees.

The nation’s extensive shelter system stems from a 1963 law guaranteeing every resident a spot in a bunker to protect against bombs and nuclear radiation. According to Louis-Henri Delarageaz, civil protection commander for the Vaud canton, the government aims to remove regulatory exceptions and refurbish older shelters. A 220 million Swiss franc ($250 million) budget has been allocated for these updates.

“This doesn’t mean we’re preparing for conflict,” Delarageaz emphasized. “The message is about maintaining and ensuring the functionality of our existing shelter network.”

Routine inspections, like one recently conducted in Bercher village, highlight the challenges of upkeep. A bunker beneath an apartment block was deemed unfit due to issues like a malfunctioning door and a cobweb-filled escape tunnel without a ladder. Owners of such shelters must repair deficiencies within a year or face fines of 800 francs ($900) per resident to cover alternative public shelter arrangements.

The initiative comes as inquiries about shelter readiness surged following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Delarageaz reported a flood of calls from anxious residents, including French citizens, seeking clarity on shelter locations and availability.

Despite its longstanding neutrality since 1815, Switzerland remains prepared for crises. Its cantons feature communal shelters equipped with bunk beds, toilets, underground command centers, hospitals with operating rooms, and even bunkers to safeguard art.

“In Switzerland, we prioritize foresight,” Delarageaz stated. Quoting the Latin adage, he added, “If you want peace, prepare for war.”

The modernization effort reaffirms Switzerland’s commitment to resilience and readiness, ensuring its shelters remain a vital asset in uncertain times.

</excerpt>

The debut use of the controversial “Sarco” pod, a device designed for assisted suicide, has become the subject of heated debate in Switzerland. On September 23, a 64-year-old American woman reportedly used the pod near a forest cabin in Merishausen, Switzerland, intending to end her life. However, initial reports that she died peacefully are now facing scrutiny after claims of strangulation marks on her neck emerged, leading to multiple arrests and an expanded investigation.

What is the Sarco Pod?

The Sarco pod is a futuristic capsule designed to facilitate euthanasia through nitrogen-induced hypoxia. When the occupant presses a button, nitrogen gas fills the sealed pod, reducing oxygen levels and causing the user to lose consciousness and eventually die from suffocation. Invented by right-to-die activist Dr. Philip Nitschke, the device was developed by Exit International, an assisted-suicide group based in the Netherlands. Swiss law allows for assisted suicide under specific conditions, provided no external force or self-serving motive is involved.

The Woman’s Final Moments Inside the Pod

According to various sources, the woman, who suffered from a rare and severe skull base osteomyelitis and had been contemplating euthanasia for two years, entered the Sarco pod under the supervision of Florian Willet, president of The Last Resort, a Swiss affiliate of Exit International. After confirming her readiness, she reportedly lay down, closed the lid, and activated the pod herself. Willet instructed her to breathe calmly as nitrogen filled the capsule. Within minutes, her oxygen levels fell, and she reportedly died within half an hour. Willet later stated that she appeared to have passed away peacefully.

Emerging Reports of Strangulation Marks After the woman’s death, her body was examined, and local authorities received notification of her assisted suicide. However, controversy erupted when autopsy reports allegedly indicated “strangulation marks” on her neck, casting doubt on the circumstances of her death. According to sources like The Times and Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant, a forensic report highlighted “severe injuries” on her neck, prompting the public prosecutor in Schaffhausen to broaden the investigation to include the possibility of murder.

Investigations and Legal Proceedings Following the autopsy findings, the prosecutor’s office in Schaffhausen opened a criminal investigation, leading to the arrest of several people, including Florian Willet. Prosecutors are now investigating the case for possible incitement and accessory to suicide, as well as homicide. Though details remain undisclosed, Swiss authorities are focusing on whether the death might have involved foul play.

Exit International’s Defense and Counterclaims Exit International and The Last Resort have categorically denied any allegations of misconduct. In a statement, Exit International founder Dr. Nitschke affirmed that the Sarco pod functioned exactly as intended, providing a “peaceful, non-drug-induced death.” The organization argues that the strangulation marks could be related to the woman’s skull base osteomyelitis, a condition known to cause disfigurement and complications near the neck. The Last Resort also criticized the Schaffhausen prosecutor’s office for withholding the full autopsy report, which has fueled public speculation.

The Broader Debate: Ethics of Assisted Suicide and Technology The ongoing Sarco investigation has intensified discussions around assisted suicide, particularly with emerging technologies like the Sarco pod. While advocates argue that devices like Sarco enable dignified death without drugs, critics worry about the risks of such technology, particularly in light of evolving legal and ethical standards around euthanasia.

Conclusion: Awaiting Answers For now, the details surrounding the first reported death in a Sarco pod remain clouded in uncertainty. With allegations of strangulation, questions of legality, and ongoing arrests, Swiss authorities face mounting pressure to provide clarity and transparency. The full autopsy report, when released, could determine whether the Sarco death was truly a peaceful end or if there is more to the story than initially thought.

The Sarco pod’s use of nitrogen and non-compliance with Swiss product safety laws have raised legal concerns. Assisted suicide remains legal under strict regulations in Switzerland.
</excerpt>

Invention of the Sarco Pod

The Sarco pod, a controversial euthanasia device, has made headlines after a 64-year-old American woman used it to end her life in a Swiss forest. The device, short for “sarcophagus,” was invented in 2017 by Australian euthanasia advocate Dr. Philip Nitschke, in collaboration with Dutch industrial designer Alexander Bannink. Nitschke, often referred to as “Doctor Death,” created the pod to offer terminally ill individuals a peaceful, self-directed death. The pod’s design has sparked global debate, especially as assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland but subject to stringent regulations.

How the Pod Works

The Sarco pod allows users to administer their own euthanasia by creating an oxygen-deprived environment. The device, which can be operated via a button, voice command, or eye movement, replaces oxygen with nitrogen, causing the user to lose consciousness within minutes and die from hypoxia shortly after. Once inside the pod, users hear a voice that says, “If you want to die, press this button.” The oxygen level drops rapidly from 21% to almost zero, leading to death within ten minutes. Cameras inside the pod record the process, and footage is handed over to coroners for verification.

Controversy Surrounding the Sarco Pod

The Sarco pod has ignited widespread controversy due to its futuristic design, self-operating mechanism, and lack of medical oversight. Critics argue that the device glamorizes suicide and raises ethical concerns, especially since it does not require the supervision of healthcare professionals. In Switzerland, where euthanasia is legal, the Swiss Minister of Health, Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, stated that the use of nitrogen for euthanasia is not legally compliant. The device also failed to meet the country’s product safety standards. Advocates, however, argue that the pod provides an accessible and dignified option for those seeking euthanasia, without relying on medical drugs or doctors.

Switzerland’s Role in “Death Tourism”

Switzerland’s assisted suicide laws extend to foreign nationals, making the country a destination for those seeking a peaceful end to life. This has resulted in a rise in “death tourism,” with over 1,000 people choosing to end their lives in Switzerland through organizations such as Exit and Dignitas. These organizations, and now the Sarco pod, have prompted global debate about ethics, regulation, and the future of euthanasia. Despite the legal framework, devices like the Sarco pod, which lack medical oversight and are not fully compliant with Swiss law, continue to fuel controversy.

Arrests After First Known Use

After the American woman’s death in the pod, Swiss authorities arrested several individuals on suspicion of inciting, aiding, and abetting suicide. The woman, who had suffered from a compromised immune system, chose to die in the forest near the Swiss-German border to experience nature in her final moments. Despite the legality of assisted suicide in Switzerland, authorities warned that those responsible for operating the Sarco pod could face legal consequences, including prison time, as the pod had not been approved by Swiss regulators.

This incident marks the first known use of the Sarco pod and has further fueled the debate over the ethics and legality of the device. Dr. Nitschke remains a controversial figure, with his career often marred by clashes with authorities. Nonetheless, the pod has continued to generate global interest, with its future in Switzerland now in question.

The capsule, designed for assisted suicide, was used by a 64-year-old American woman. Authorities are investigating potential charges of “inducing and aiding and abetting suicide,” while legal compliance of the capsule is questioned.
</excerpt>

Swiss authorities have arrested multiple individuals following the first use of a controversial futuristic capsule designed for assisted suicide. The capsule, known as “Sarco,” was deployed in a wooded area of Merishausen in the Schaffhausen canton on Monday.

Prosecutors in Schaffhausen have initiated criminal proceedings against several people for “inducing and aiding and abetting suicide,” according to a police statement. While details about the individuals involved and the deceased have not been disclosed, it was confirmed that the individual who died was a 64-year-old American woman suffering from a severely compromised immune system.

Florian Willet, co-president of The Last Resort, the group behind the Sarco capsule, was among four detainees, which included a Dutch journalist and two Swiss individuals. Willet was the only other person present when the woman ended her life. In a statement, he described the death as “peaceful, fast, and dignified.” The Last Resort confirmed that the woman had passed psychiatric evaluations before proceeding with assisted suicide.

The Sarco capsule, designed by Australian physician Philip Nitschke, operates by releasing nitrogen gas that lowers oxygen levels to lethal levels, leading to death. Switzerland has become a focal point for assisted suicide advocates due to its permissive laws, and The Last Resort asserted that they had received legal advice permitting the capsule’s use.

However, the capsule has sparked considerable media attention and debate regarding its legality. Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, the Swiss health minister, stated on Monday that the capsule does not comply with product safety laws, particularly regarding its use of nitrogen.

This visit marks Jaishankar’s third official trip to Berlin as Foreign Minister.

Currently attending the India-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Jaishankar will travel to Germany on Tuesday for a two-day visit. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that India and Germany enjoy a strong Strategic Partnership, with Germany being one of India’s leading trading partners and one of the largest sources of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

After concluding his visit to Germany, Jaishankar will head to Geneva, Switzerland, from September 12 to 13. During his stay, he will meet the Swiss Foreign Minister to further strengthen the close partnership between the two countries and explore opportunities for enhancing bilateral relations.

Geneva, home to several key international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), will also be a significant focus of Jaishankar’s visit. He is expected to meet with heads and representatives of these organizations, with whom India is actively engaged.

As the most populous country and one of the top five global economies, India has been pursuing permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). While nations like Russia, France, the US, and the UK support India’s bid, China remains a key obstacle.

</excerpt>

A series of ferocious storms and torrential rains over the weekend have resulted in tragic fatalities across France, Switzerland, and Italy. Local authorities reported five deaths, underscoring the destructive impact of severe weather conditions in the region.

In France’s northeastern Aube region, three elderly individuals lost their lives on Saturday when a tree toppled onto their car amid intense winds. Another passenger remains critically injured, according to AFP.

Across the border in Switzerland, the consequences were equally dire, with two fatalities and one person reported missing following a landslide triggered by heavy rains in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. The victims, two women on holiday in the Alpine region, were tragically swept away by the landslide.

Emergency response efforts were further complicated by challenging weather conditions, making rescue operations difficult in inaccessible valleys and areas cut off from electricity and drinking water supplies. In Peccia, 300 people attending a football tournament faced evacuation, while nearly 70 individuals from a holiday camp in Mogno were also moved to safety.

In Valais, western Switzerland, civil security services evacuated “several hundred” residents and closed numerous roads as the Rhone River and its tributaries overflowed, causing widespread disruption and damage.

Meanwhile, northern Italy’s Aosta Valley witnessed dramatic scenes of floods and swollen rivers cascading down mountainsides, prompting widespread concern and emergency responses.

Scientists continue to highlight that climate change, exacerbated by human activity, is intensifying the severity, frequency, and duration of extreme weather events such as floods and ferocious storms, underscoring the urgent need for climate resilience and mitigation measures.

</excerpt>

Story of chocolate as we know it today begins with the word “conche” and its verb form, “conching.” This process was a closely guarded secret in the valleys of Switzerland long before it revolutionized the world with melt-in-the-mouth chocolate bars. Rodolphe Lindt kept the conching process to himself for 20 years until 1899, when he sold it to Johann Rudolf Sprüngli-Schifferli, a fellow chocolate manufacturer.

Where did Chocolate’s journey start?

Chocolate’s journey starts with cocoa, a bean with a history dating back to the 4th millennium BC in the Ecuadorian rainforests. By the 2nd millennium BC, the word “kakawa” had gained prominence in Mexico, where the Aztecs enjoyed a spicy drink called “Xocolatl.” However, it wasn’t until European explorers “discovered” it that chocolate began its global ascent. In 1528, the conquistador Hernán Cortés brought cocoa to Europe. By 1544, chocolate had reached the Spanish court and was enjoyed as a drink.

Centuries later, the cocoa tree was scientifically named Theobroma Cacao L. by Carl von Linné, meaning “food of the gods” in Greek. Since then, chocolate has continued to captivate people worldwide.

Solid chocolate, as we know it, was still centuries away from being perfected. The Italian “cioccolatieri,” or traveling craftsmen, began showcasing their chocolate-making skills at fairs across Europe. Chocolate making was a labour-intensive process requiring significant skill and patience. One of the first Swiss individuals to master this art was François-Louis Cailler, who opened Switzerland’s first chocolate factory in Corsier-sur-Vevey in 1819. Cailler’s brand remains the oldest existing chocolate brand in the world today, though chocolate bars were yet to be invented.

In the 19th century, young chocolate producers in Switzerland, France, and England spent years experimenting, facing many failures, and striving for success. France was home to the first single-bar manufacturing plant in 1846, but the chocolate was still bitter, hard, grainy, and left an unpleasant taste.

It wasn’t until 1847 that England produced the first palatable chocolate bar, although it was still rough and gritty. These early attempts were far from the smooth, delectable chocolate we enjoy today. Yet, these innovations laid the groundwork for future developments.

Switzerland’s contribution to Chocolate making?

Switzerland’s contribution came a few decades later when the process of conching was perfected by Rodolphe Lindt, which significantly improved the texture and flavour of chocolate. This marked the beginning of the modern chocolate era, transforming chocolate from a coarse, bitter treat into a smooth, luxurious confection that continues to delight people around the globe.

</excerpt>

Rescuers in Switzerland have recovered the body of one of three people who were swept away in a rockslide following severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, authorities reported on Sunday. The other two individuals remain missing.

An aerial photograph shows excavators clearing an area in the Graubünden canton in Switzerland after violent downpours caused floods and landslides. One woman was rescued alive from the debris on Saturday morning.

“Today is a sad day,” said Ignazio Cassis, a member of the Swiss Federal Council, addressing reporters after visiting the region to express solidarity with the victims on behalf of the Federal Government. The recovered body was found in a nearby river.

A team of 200 rescuers has been conducting the search since Saturday, utilizing excavators, specially-trained search dogs, drones, and army helicopters. However, William Kloter from the Swiss police, leading the rescue operations, indicated that the chances of finding the missing individuals alive are slim. Search efforts were paused overnight due to heavy rain.

The rockslide affected a group of three houses in the municipality of Lostallo in the Alpine valley of Misox in Graubünden.

Additionally, Swiss authorities reported that a portion of the A13 motorway leading to Italy was completely submerged and destroyed by flooding. This major transit route will likely remain closed between the San Bernardino Pass and Roveredo for several months.

The caption humorously expresses surprise at finding a slice of India in Switzerland, noting that Indian restaurants in Europe often exude a more traditional vibe than those in India itself.

The video captures the bustling restaurant ambiance, with one waitress warmly acknowledging the camera while another appears in the frame, also dressed in traditional attire. The interior of the restaurant is depicted with vibrant decor, including a striking portrait of a Hindu goddess on the wall, further enhancing the authentic Indian feel.

</excerpt>

Four members of the billionaire Hinduja family, originally from India, were convicted on Friday for “illegally exploiting poorly paid servants” at their lavish Geneva villa in Switzerland. The elder Hindujas – Prakash Hinduja (78) and Kamal Hinduja (75) – who were absent from the trial due to health issues, were each sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison. According to Bloomberg, Ajay Hinduja and his wife, also not present in court, received slightly shorter sentences of 4 years.

Family members Ajay Hinduja, his wife Namrata, and his parents were found guilty of taking illegal advantage of staff hired in India by paying them significantly less than the standard Swiss wages.

The family’s business manager, Najib Ziazi, received an 18-month suspended sentence.

The Hindujas expressed their disappointment at the Swiss court’s decision to impose jail terms on some family members. They announced an appeal has been filed in a higher court to contest the verdict, which found them guilty of exploiting vulnerable domestic workers, as reported by news agency PTI.

Who are the Hindujas?

Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja founded a commodities-trading business in 1914 in British India’s Sindh region, which his four sons quickly diversified. They initially found success distributing Bollywood films internationally. Srichand, the eldest son, passed away in 2023.

Following Srichand’s death, his brothers Gopichand, Prakash, and Ashok remained. The three younger brothers had previously argued with Srichand and his daughter Vinoo over the family’s wealth but settled their differences in 2022.

The Hinduja family has interests in finance, media, and energy sectors and owns stakes in six publicly traded Indian companies. Their collective wealth is at least $14 billion, ranking them among Asia’s top 20 wealthiest families.

Prakash Hinduja and his brothers oversee an industrial conglomerate that spans information technology, media, power, real estate, and healthcare sectors. Forbes estimates the Hinduja family’s net worth at approximately $20 billion.

What are the charges?

Family members were accused of confiscating workers’ passports, preventing them from leaving the villa, and forcing them to work extremely long hours for minimal pay in Switzerland. Additionally, some workers, who only spoke Hindi, were paid in rupees to inaccessible bank accounts in their home country.

The family’s legal team denied the allegations, arguing in court that the staff were treated respectfully and provided with proper accommodation.

A Swiss court dismissed the more severe charges of human trafficking against 79-year-old tycoon Prakash Hinduja, his wife Kamal, son Ajay, and daughter-in-law Namrata, stating that the workers had at least some understanding of their working conditions.

Last week, it was revealed in court that the family had reached an undisclosed settlement with the plaintiffs. Swiss authorities have confiscated diamonds, rubies, a platinum necklace, and other jewelry and assets to cover potential legal fees and penalties.

More details of the current case

According to a Bloomberg report, their conviction arose from a case that began in 2018. Swiss prosecutors, acting on a tipoff, raided the villa, Hinduja Bank offices, and other local businesses owned by the Hinduja Group, seizing documents and hard drives.

The court found the four guilty of exploiting workers, providing unauthorized employment, offering minimal health benefits, and paying wages less than one-tenth of the standard rate for such jobs in Switzerland.

Prosecutors said that workers described a “climate of fear” created by Kamal Hinduja. They were forced to work with little or no vacation, extended hours for receptions, and slept in the basement, sometimes on mattresses on the floor.

The Geneva court accepted that the four Hindujas exploited the servants’ lack of local language skills and knowledge, making them work up to 18 hours a day, seven days a week, without statutory time off or benefits, for a fraction of the normal Swiss wages.

The Hindujas employed the workers without proper Swiss documentation, relying on repeatedly renewed short-term Schengen-zone EU visas, in a deliberate attempt to deceive Swiss authorities.

</excerpt>

Switzerland has announced that representatives from ninety states will attend the Ukraine Peace Summit aimed at charting a course for sustainable peace in Ukraine. The conference, scheduled for June 15-16, will not include Russia, as Moscow has expressed disinterest in participating.

Swiss President Viola Amherd, speaking in Bern, emphasized the event’s goal of establishing a roadmap towards ending the conflict that began nearly 28 months ago with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Hosted at Kyiv’s request, the conference will proceed without Russian representation. Switzerland has previously stated that Russia was not invited, citing the country’s lack of interest in engagement.

Moscow has questioned Switzerland’s neutrality, pointing to its alignment with European Union sanctions. Despite this, the Swiss government aims to define a collaborative path involving both Russia and Ukraine in future peace negotiations.

States Attending The Ukraine Peace Summit

According to Amherd, the conference will see participation from a mix of state representatives and organizations such as the United Nations. About half of the attending countries will be represented by their head of state or government. Confirmed high-profile attendees include French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. While US President Joe Biden will not be present, the US delegation will be led by Vice President Kamala Harris and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

Switzerland has denied any disappointment over the attendance, noting that out of 160 invitations sent, over ninety states have confirmed participation. The invite list was designed to include countries with varying relationships with Moscow, seeking broad international support. The final roster of participants will be confirmed by Friday, with key developing nations like Turkey and South Africa yet to declare their attendance. India has confirmed its participation, though the level of its representation remains unspecified.

</excerpt>

India is deliberating its level of participation in the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, slated to be held in Switzerland this month, despite increasing calls from Europe for senior leadership representation, according to sources familiar with the matter.

While India is expected to attend the conference at Bürgenstock Hotel on June 15-16, it’s unlikely that top leaders, including the Prime Minister or External Affairs Minister, will represent New Delhi, sources said on the condition of anonymity.

India’s involvement in the peace summit is anticipated to mirror its participation in previous meetings of senior security officials and political advisors held since 2022, such as those in Copenhagen, Jeddah, Malta, and Davos. Typically, India has been represented by the secretary (West) in the external affairs ministry or the deputy national security adviser.

Although National Security Adviser Ajit Doval attended the meeting hosted in Jeddah last August by Saudi Arabia, his attendance in Switzerland seems improbable, the sources added.

Switzerland has been actively engaging with India to secure its participation in the peace summit. Last month, Swiss foreign secretary Alexandre Fasel visited New Delhi, emphasizing the potential role of India and other Brics members as intermediaries between Russia and the West.

India’s primary concern revolves around not being perceived as part of an initiative led by Western nations to negotiate the end of the Ukraine conflict without Russian involvement, sources highlighted.

While India has refrained from openly criticizing Russia’s actions in Ukraine, it has advocated for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has underscored India’s commitment to joining key summits promoting global peace and security.

Despite hopes from Ukraine and its partners for India’s participation, it’s unlikely that India will send its foreign secretary to the summit, according to sources. European allies, like France, believe India could play a pivotal role in conveying an “appropriate message” to Russia and rallying support from Global South and middle-ground countries.

The Ukraine conflict is viewed as having significant implications for the international order, beyond Europe. Observers note that China closely monitors Russia’s handling of the conflict, as it could influence China’s policies toward Taiwan and beyond.

China’s recent announcement of non-participation in the peace summit due to Russia’s exclusion has heightened tensions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during a visit to Singapore, accused China of aiding Russia in disrupting the summit.

Despite these challenges, more than 70 states have confirmed participation in the peace summit, with representation from various regions, indicating the global interest in resolving the Ukraine crisis.

In Milind Soman’s recent video, he can be seen jogging barefoot through the picturesque landscapes of Switzerland, adorned in workout attire, gloves, and glasses. The captivating clip captures Milind’s brisk run along a snow-lined road, with majestic snow-capped mountains and quaint, snow-covered homes providing a breathtaking backdrop. In the accompanying caption, the model humorously reflects on the sensation of his hands feeling colder than his feet in the snow, attributing it to a potential weakness in his hands. “At 3 degrees, sometimes my hands feel chillier than my feet in the snow. Still figuring out why…perhaps my hands need a little more attention,” he quips.

Benefits of jogging:

Jogging, a widely embraced form of exercise, not only fosters robust bones and muscles but also aids in weight management and enhances cardiovascular fitness. Additionally, it serves as an effective calorie-burning activity, promotes healthy aging, and contributes significantly to mental well-being, self-assurance, and overall quality of life.

Enthusiastic fans showered Milind with adoration in the comments section, expressing their admiration for his video. One admirer exclaimed, “You are truly exceptional, sir,” while another hailed him as “an inspiration to us all.” Another fan echoed similar sentiments, declaring, “You are our ultimate hero.”

</excerpt>

Switzerland has extended an invitation to India to join the upcoming Peace in Ukraine Summit, scheduled for the following month. Acting as a historically neutral mediator, Switzerland seeks to broker an end to the ongoing two-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Set to occur on June 15 and 16 at the Burgenstock resort, the summit aims to foster a shared vision for achieving a fair and enduring peace in Ukraine, according to Swiss officials. The gathering will follow the G7 summit held in Italy.

While India has been extended an invitation and is expected to participate, the extent of its influence remains uncertain. It is unclear whether the Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar, or Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend. Of critical importance, the summit coincides closely with the outcomes of the Indian Lok Sabha election on June 4, and depending on these results, ministry formation will be imminent. India is anticipated to provide a response to the invitation in the near future.

The Russians have not been invited to the summit so far because they’ve repeatedly declined to participate, according to Swiss officials. However, Switzerland believes that Russia must be part of the discussions, and a summit without their involvement is unthinkable. On the other hand, it’s expected that the G7 countries, along with most, if not all, European Union nations, will attend. In total, Switzerland has sent out 160 invitations. It’s highly likely that Ukraine will participate, although it’s uncertain if President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be present.

The summit aims to achieve three main goals. Firstly, it provides a platform for discussing ways to achieve a fair and lasting peace for Ukraine, based on international laws and the principles of the United Nations. Secondly, it aims to create a common understanding of how to reach this goal and define a roadmap for involving both parties in future peace talks. The war, which has been ongoing for over two years, has resulted in significant loss of life and has had a negative impact on the global economy, especially in countries like India. High prices of essential goods like food, fuel, and fertilizers have affected many poorer nations.

</excerpt>

A train hostage situation in western Switzerland concluded on Thursday night with the suspect being killed in a police operation, and all hostages were safely released, according to authorities.

The identity of the hostage-taker had not been officially confirmed, and investigations were underway. The suspect was shot and killed by a police officer after allegedly rushing at the officer with the axe.

A total of 15 hostages, including 14 passengers and the conductor, were taken during the ordeal that lasted nearly four hours, from around 6:35 pm to 10:30 pm (1735 GMT to 2130 GMT). The train, halted near Yverdon, had its conductor forced to join the passengers by the suspect, who was then reported to the police by the passengers.

Negotiations with the suspect occurred partially through WhatsApp, aided by a translator fluent in Farsi, the predominant language in Iran.

Authorities made the decision to storm the train, executing a maneuver to keep the suspect away from the hostages, as outlined by Sauterel.

Oxfam issued a report in conjunction with the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, the top one percent of global income holders have taken over two-thirds of the $42 trillion in new wealth produced since 2020.

The disparity in the money shared by the top one percent is almost twice when compared to the bottom 99 percent of the world’s population, according to Oxfam’s “Survival of the Richest” report released on Monday.

In addition, according to Oxfam, half of the world’s billionaires reside in nations that do not impose inheritance taxes on their direct descendants, putting them on course to leave $5 trillion to their heirs—more than Africa’s entire GDP. Billionaire fortunes are increasing by $2.7 billion a day the report said.

“While ordinary people are making daily sacrifices on essentials like food, the super-rich have outdone even their wildest dreams. Just two years in, this decade is shaping up to be the best yet for billionaires — a roaring ‘20s boom for the world’s richest,” said Gabriela Bucher, executive director of Oxfam International.

“Taxing the super-rich and big corporations is the door out of today’s overlapping crises. It’s time we demolish the convenient myth that tax cuts for the richest result in their wealth somehow ‘trickling down’ to everyone else. Forty years of tax cuts for the super-rich have shown that a rising tide doesn’t lift all ships — just the superyachts.”

A 5 percent tax on the world’s multi-millionaires and billionaires could raise $1.7 trillion every year which is enough to lift 2 billion people out of poverty, according to Oxfam. Global business and political elites gather annually at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to address political and economic topics of interest to the whole world. This year’s summit will be attended by 52 heads of state and nearly 600 CEOs.
