Suryakumar Yadav Breaks AB de Villiers’ Record for Most IPL Runs by a Non-Opener

June 2, 2025, 12:39 am

Suryakumar Yadav is blazing for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025. On Sunday (June 1), in the 2nd qualifier match of this year’s IPL being played at Narendra Modi Stadium in Mumbai between the Mumbai Indians and the Punjab Kings, he wrote his name in the records books by becoming the first non-opener to finish with 700 runs in an IPL season.

Milestone Moment of Suryakumar Yadav Against Kyle Jamieson

Surya needed 27 runs on Sunday to complete 700 runs in IPL 2025, and he achieved the objective by hitting Kyle Jamieson for a four on the second ball of the 13th over of MI’s innings.

In the list of non-openers with the highest runs in an IPL season, Surya is presently trailed by AB de Villiers and Rishabh Pant. While ABD totaled a total of 687 runs in IPL 2016 for RCB, Pant earned 684 runs in IPL 2018 for Delhi Capitals.

Most Runs by a Non-Opener in an IPL Season

717 Suryakumar Yadav (2025)
687 AB de Villiers (2016)
684 Rishabh Pant (2018)
622 Kane Williamson (2018)
605 Suryakumar Yadav (2023)

Knock of Suryakumar Yadav in the Second Qualifier

Surya scored 44 runs from 26 balls in the second qualifier match and, during his stay at the crease, hammered four fours and three sixes. He was sent back to the pavilion by Yuzvendra Chahal on the fifth ball of the 14th over of MI’s inning. Surya tried to hit Chahal for a six but was caught near the boundary ropes by Nehal Wadhera.

Before exiting against Punjab Kings, Surya contributed 72 runs for the third wicket with Tilak Varma (44 runs off 29 balls). Surya batted at No. 4 for the Hardik Pandya’s team in the second knockout fixture of this season’s IPL. Prior to his appearance at the crease, England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow scored 38 runs off 24 balls to take MI off to a flying start in spite of Rohit Sharma’s early dismissal.

Suryakumar Yadav Breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s 15-Year-Old IPL Record with Career-Best Season

May 26, 2025, 11:04 pm

For the second time in his career, Suryakumar Yadav achieved a 600-run season in the Indian Premier League (IPL). 2023 was the previous season, when the Mumbai Indians had qualified for the playoffs, getting into Qualifier 2. Two years later, while MI qualified for the knockouts again, Suryakumar was among the best in the run-scoring charts as he produced a career-defining season, where he went ahead of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

Record-Breaking Performance Against Punjab Kings by Suryakumar Yadav

The India T20I skipper did so in Mumbai’s last league match against Punjab Kings at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. In compiling his half-century, his fifth of the season, Suryakumar had the most successful season by a Mumbai Indians batsman. Suryakumar broke Sachin’s 15-year-old record to be the highest individual run-scorer in an IPL season. The erstwhile MI captain had scored 618 runs in the 2010 season, peppered with five fifties.

Suryakumar Yadav Surpassing Career Milestones

Suryakumar now has 640 runs in 14 games this season, at a strike rate of 168.54. It is also his best-ever performance in an IPL season, surpassing his 2023 performance of 605 runs in 16 matches. With Mumbai qualifying for the playoffs, Suryakumar will get the opportunity to become the first Mumbai batter to cross the 700-run barrier in an IPL season. He will thus become the third Indian batter to the milestone after Virat Kohli (2016, 2024) and Shubman Gill (2023).

Four teams have already made it to this season’s playoffs Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, MI, and PBKS and the last two league games will determine the final positions.

Punjab Kings’ Challenging Position

With 17 points, Punjab are in second place, but a loss to Mumbai might send them to third or even fourth, which may land them the Eliminator on May 30.

Finishing in the second two appears to be more challenging for Shreyas Iyer’s side as not only do they require a win over a strong Mumbai, but also expect GT (18 points) and RCB (17 points) to lose their respective last matches. Therefore, PBKS, who lost their last match against Delhi Capitals, are in a do-or-die scenario against MI in their quest for finishing in the top two. For MI, their better Net Run Rate amongst all four qualifying teams will be helpful if they defeat Punjab Kings and GT and RCB lose their matches.

Suryakumar Yadav Equals Temba Bavuma’s World Record

May 23, 2025, 2:20 am

Mumbai Indians (MI) star batter, Suryakumar Yadav, made headlines with his brilliant performance against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). His match-winning knock helped him equal the all-time joint-highest sequence for consecutive 25-plus scores in T20s.

Suryakumar Yadav Shines in Dominant MI Win

Suryakumar Yadav lit up Wankhede with a blistering 73*, turning the game in Mumbai’s favor. His explosive knock helped Mumbai crush Delhi by 59 runs. With the win, Mumbai secured a spot in the playoffs, sending Delhi out of contention. This match-winning innings marked Yadav’s 13th consecutive 25-plus score in T20s, tying South Africa’s Test captain Temba Bavuma’s long-standing record. His performance propelled Mumbai to a commanding total of 180/5.

While the 34-year-old enjoyed triumph, Delhi, however, was the first team to miss out on playing playoffs after winning four on the spin at the start of an IPL season. Mumbai ended DC’s winning streak, and on Wednesday evening, they gave them the exit door with a clinical show in every aspect of the game.

MI’s Clinical Bowling Performance vs DC

In DC’s chase of 181, Mitchell Santner and Jasprit Bumrah let loose with their scorching three-wicket bursts. Despite their efforts, Delhi never threatened to upset the in-form five-time champions.

Mumbai bowled Delhi on 121, indicating the determination with which their bowlers play the game. This was Mumbai’s fifth time bowling out a team in IPL 2025, while others have done so seven times.

Playoffs Finalized Early in IPL 2025

With seven games remaining in the group stage, the four playoff spots have been finalized earlier than ever in the history of the cash-rich league. Previously, the earliest these spots were sealed was in 2011. Back then, the four places were confirmed after the 67th match, in a season with 70 league games.

Mumbai became the fourth team to secure a spot, joining Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans, and Punjab Kings in the race for the prestigious title. The upcoming group-stage matches will determine the final positions of these four teams ahead of the playoffs.

Suryakumar Yadav Reflects on Early MI Days: “Barely Slept the Night Before My Debut”

May 2, 2025, 12:15 am

Mumbai Indians (MI) batter Suryakumar Yadav, who has led his team to victory in many games, spoke of his debut in 2010, explaining that he “barely slept the night before.” “I barely slept the night before my debut for Mumbai Indians. I went to bed around 4 or 5 in the morning. There was so much excitement. Playing for a franchise brings a different kind of buzz. I was just enjoying the moment, thinking about stepping onto the field for warm-up, and as soon as I did, I was already sweating. It felt really good,” Suryakumar Yadav told Jio Hotstar.

Evolution of The Playing Style of Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar remembered his century in IPL 2024 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and explained how changing T20 demands compelled him to modify his game. “The T20 format has changed a lot in the past few years scoring rates, strike rates, everything. Earlier, I used to bat at a strike rate of 140-150, but post-2020, I realized that to be the best, I needed to evolve. I went back to the drawing board, worked on match simulations, and started practicing shots that would help me stay ahead of bowlers and captains. From 2021 to 2024, I focused on exploiting specific areas, finding scoring options where I could also minimize risk. Everything I do in matches now, I’ve already practiced—I try to replicate those sessions exactly. Scoring a T20 century felt really special because it came from all that effort and clarity,” he added.

Mumbai Indians’ Dominant Win Against Rajasthan Royals

Mumbai Indians won convincingly by 100 runs against Rajasthan Royals at Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium on May 1, 2025, Mumbai chose to bat first and put up a tall 217/2 in their 20 overs. Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma scored 61 and 53 runs, respectively, stabilizing the innings. Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav scored 48 runs each to give a solid end to the innings.

In response, Rajasthan’s chase collapsed early. Teenager sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi was caught on the second ball for a duck, prompting a collapse. Trent Boult (3/28), Jasprit Bumrah (2/15), and Karn Sharma (3/23) tore apart the Royals’ batting order, with their all-out dismissal for 117 in 16.1 overs. The defeat knocked Rajasthan out of playoff contention, and Mumbai moved to the top of the table with their sixth successive victory.

“Where’s the Chit?” Suryakumar Yadav Checks Abhishek Sharma’s Pocket in Hilarious On-Field Moment | Watch

April 18, 2025, 1:05 pm

SunRisers Hyderabad batsman Abhishek Sharma attributed India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and ex-cricketer Yuvraj Singh after scoring his brutal 141 off 55 balls while playing against Punjab Kings in IPL 2025. The young left-handed batsman revealed that they always guided and supported him throughout.

“Special mention to Yuvraj Paaji too, because I’ve also been in conversation with him. And I will not deny Suryakumar Yadav, too; he’s been in touch, and he was present there for me. He was conversing with me, and he understood that it was going to happen very soon, so thanks to him too,” Abhishek said after his breathtaking hundred.

Fun on the Field: Pocket Check by Suryakumar Yadav

Mumbai Indians’ Suryakumar Yadav shared a funny moment with Abhishek in their last game against SunRisers Hyderabad. The camera spotted SKY rummaging through Abhishek’s pockets during the game, perhaps in search of the note Abhishek had previously taken out to thank SRH fans after his century against PBKS.

— Kumar Sourav (@AdamDhoni1) April 18, 2025

In that MI game, Abhishek got 40 off 28 balls before being sent back by Hardik Pandya—ironically, in the same over after the funny exchange with SKY. Though Abhishek and Heinrich Klaasen (37 off 28) added useful runs, SRH could only make 162/5 in 20 overs.

MI Bowlers Outfox SRH Batters

Mumbai Indians chased the target with ease in 18.1 overs, with Suryakumar hitting 26 from 15 balls. Post-match, SRH head coach Daniel Vettori praised the bowling attack of MI and their strategy to play on a difficult wicket.

“It was just incredibly tough through those middle stages,” Vettori added. “It was a difficult surface. Mumbai read the conditions exceptionally well…they really relied on that slow ball, but it was mainly effective because of their execution and there’s some supreme exponents of it in (Jasprit) Bumrah and Trent Boult and even Hardik Pandya.”

He said, “The way they bowled, particularly through those middle stages, really stifled us. We were 66 for three through those 10 overs, and in these sort of conditions you probably need more than that.”

Vettori Calls for Adaptation

Highlighting the importance of adaptability, Vettori opined, “I feel like no one really has control over their surface, so there’s a little bit of luck involved in terms of coming up against wickets that don’t suit us.”

SRH will now focus on rebuilding and trying to become more adaptable to difficult conditions as the season of IPL 2025 goes on.

Suryakumar Yadav Collapses After Brutal Helmet Blow in Match Against GT | Watch

March 29, 2025, 11:27 pm

There was a moment of drama at the Narendra Modi Stadium during Match 9 of IPL 2025 when Suryakumar Yadav was hit on his helmet by a sharp bouncer from Prasidh Krishna. While attempting to scoop a slower short ball, SKY misjudged the delivery, and there was a top edge that struck the apex of his helmet, just above his right eye. The impact caused him to fall flat on the pitch, silencing the Ahmedabad crowd in shock.

Moment of Alarm and Quick Recovery

SKY remained motionless for a few seconds, worrying about fans, teammates, and officials. The helmet absorbed the blow, sparing a serious injury. When the Mumbai Indians‘ star eventually sat up slowly, the crowd let loose in a sigh of relief. Medical personnel evaluated him quickly on the field, and after a quick check-up, SKY returned to play, reflecting his strength of character.

Mumbai Indians’ Chase Under Pressure

At the time of the incident, Mumbai Indians were at 112/4 off 14 overs, pursuing a target of 197 by the Gujarat Titans. Suryakumar Yadav was on his way to a half-century, wanting to keep MI in the game. Earlier, MI skipper Hardik Pandya had won the toss and decided to bowl first. GT put up a strong score of 194/8, with opener B Sai Sudharsan scoring a half-century. Pandya cast a masterly spell, scalping two decisive wickets, including Shubman Gill.

Major Highlights of the Match

Mohammad Siraj caused some early damage to MI, snatching two wickets during the powerplay, including the first-over fall of Rohit Sharma.

GT and MI both began this game following losses in their tournament debuts.

GT possesses a slim 3-2 lead over MI in head-to-head contests from their IPL background.

Despite the frightening moment, Suryakumar Yadav’s determination to continue batting after the bouncer showcased his grit and commitment. The helmet proved to be a crucial safeguard, preventing a serious injury in what could have been a much nastier incident.

Suryakumar Yadav Buys ₹21.1 Crore Luxury Flats in Mumbai’s Godrej Sky Terraces

March 25, 2025, 4:36 pm

Suryakumar Yadav has expanded his real estate portfolio by purchasing two adjacent luxury flats in Mumbai’s premium residential project, Godrej Sky Terraces. As per property registration documents reviewed by Square Yards from the Inspector General of Registration (IGR) website, the transaction was finalized on March 21, 2025.

The cricketer’s new purchases cover a total 4,222.7 sq. ft. of carpet area and an aggregate built-up area of over 4,568 sq. ft. The transaction also covers six car parking allotments.

Deal Information and Real Estate Trends

The transaction brought with it a stamp duty of ₹1.26 crore and a registration charge of ₹30,000, according to official data.

As per Square Yards Data Intelligence, Godrej Sky Terraces project, which is sprawling over 1.05 acres, has 3 BHK and 4 BHK plans. In the period from March 2024 to February 2025, the project sold 25 properties worth ₹202 crore at an average price of ₹52,433 per sq. ft.

Why Deonar? A Growing Residential Hub

Deonar, in the eastern part of Mumbai close to Chembur, is becoming one of the hot residential spots. The area benefits from excellent connectivity through Chembur railway station on the Harbour Line, Mumbai Monorail, Eastern Express Highway, and Sion-Panvel Expressway.

Other Major Real Estate Transactions in Mumbai

Suryakumar Yadav isn’t the only cricketer investing in Mumbai’s luxury real estate market. Former Indian cricketer Zaheer Khan and his family recently purchased a luxury apartment in Elphinstone Road for ₹11 crore.

Additionally, Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma rented out his property in Lower Parel for ₹2.6 lakh per month in February, as per property registration documents.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Aggressive Batting Style Blamed for Recent Dip in Form: ‘Some Games He Won’t Perform’

January 28, 2025, 12:10 pm

India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has stood up for Suryakumar Yadav after his slow beginning to the T20I series against England. The Indian vice-captain has achieved only 0 and 12 in the initial two matches, and there is increasing pressure on him to produce a significant performance in Rajkot. Nevertheless, with India continuing a winning streak, Suryakumar is permitted to maintain his fearless batting style.

Kotak voiced his backing for Suryakumar, noting that India’s bold T20I approach doesn’t always assure substantial scores in each game.

“Surya, I think he is performing, but sometimes I believe we also expect too much. Every game, if we assume Surya will succeed (that is not acceptable). The game has become increasingly aggressive, the intent we must have in the T20s is immense, there will be occasions when they get out because they are playing fearless (cricket),” Kotak remarked at the pre-match press conference before the third T20I.

Kotak further elaborated on India’s comprehensive batting strategy and commended Surya for exemplifying a selfless attitude.

“Because if you aim to score 200-225, you cannot approach cricket while trying to safeguard your wickets. These two aspects do not go together. He plays a form of cricket for the team that is very, very selfless, and that is what he conveys to the batters as well. There are matches he will shine in, and there are matches where he will not,” Kotak mentioned.

Surya’s recent performance has fallen short of his usual level. Since the start of 2024, he has compiled 441 runs in 19 innings, averaging 24. 50, including four half-centuries.

Kotak stressed that Suryakumar possesses the intelligence to counter the adversaries’ tactics.

“I believe that he has been batting with the same rhythm; I wouldn’t say there’s been any real change. However, strategically, opposing teams will bowl in zones (to aim at him), but he is very clever and will recognize that and practice accordingly. I think, touchwood (he would score) in this match,” he stated.

Suryakumar Yadav Just 5 Sixes Away From Joining Rohit Sharma in Exclusive T20I Milestone List

January 25, 2025, 10:05 am

Scheduled for Saturday, January 25, at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the second T20I of the current five-match series between India and England will occur there. Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian leader, could make it into a top list alongside Rohit Sharma throughout this game. Should the 34-year-old hit at minimum five sixes, he will be just the second Indian player and fourth worldwide to get 150 sixes in T20Is.

Since his debut against England in March 2021, Yadav has 145 sixes from 79 T20I games. Rohit Sharma, with 205 sixes in 159 games, owns the record for most sixes in T20Is. Worldwide, Sharma is the only cricket player with more than 200 sixes in T20Is.

In T20Is, apart from Suryakumar, New Zealand’s Martin Guptill and Muhammad Waseem from the UAE have passed the 150-six run barrier. Waseem has scored 158 sixes from 69 matches, whereas Guptill retired earlier this month having 173 sixes.

Leading sixes in T20Is: Crash_totals

Rohit Sharma (India) – 205
Martin Guptill (New Zealand) – 173
Muhammad Waseem (UAE) – 158
Nicholas Pooran (West Indies) – 149
Jos Buttler (England) – 148
Suryakumar Yadav (India) – 145
Glenn Maxwell (Australia) – 137
David Miller (South Africa) – 130
Paul Stirling (Ireland) – 129
Aaron Finch (Australia) – 125

Apart from Suryakumar&’s milestone, England’s Jos Buttler is also almost at 150 sixes. In the January 22 series opener where he hit two sixes and scored 68 off 44 balls, Buttler—who has 148 sixes in 130 games—exhibited superb form. His attempts were futile since India chased only 133 runs in just 12.5 overs, losing just three wickets.

Conversely, Abhishek Sharma, who top-scored for India in the first match, is doubtful for the second T20I on account of an ankle injury suffered in training on Friday.

‘India Will Miss the X-Factor’: Suresh Raina on Suryakumar’s Exclusion from Champions Trophy Squad

January 20, 2025, 11:49 am

Former India batter Suresh Raina has criticized the BCCI selectors for leaving Suryakumar Yadav out of the Champions Trophy 2025 squad. Despite Suryakumar’s challenges in ODIs, Raina believes he could have provided the crucial “X-factor” for the team in the tournament.

Raina’s Support for Suryakumar

Raina acknowledged the strength of India’s squad but expressed his surprise at the exclusion of Suryakumar. He said, “India looks like a strong side. I am confident Rohit will take India to glory. But I was surprised with Surya’s exclusion from the team. India will miss that X-factor and that too in the middle order.”

Impressive Performances in the 2023 World Cup

Raina emphasized Suryakumar’s outstanding performance in the 2023 World Cup. He stated, “We saw Surya’s performance in the 2023 World Cup. He was scoring runs all over the ground, which is why he is called Mr. 360.” Additionally, Raina highlighted Suryakumar’s unique skills, saying, “He plays superb sweep shots and is a game-changer.” Moreover, he praised his ability to handle pressure, noting, “He has the ability to chase a required run rate of 9-plus against top teams.” Raina firmly concluded, “He should have been in the squad.”

Suryakumar’s Potential in Dubai Conditions

Raina also pointed out that Suryakumar would have been an asset in Dubai’s unique playing conditions. He explained, “India needed a player who could dominate the opposition in the middle overs. The dimensions of the Dubai ground are unique—you have small areas in front and larger ones towards the covers. Surya would have utilised these conditions exceptionally well.”

Added Pressure on the Top Order

With Suryakumar’s exclusion, Raina emphasized that the top-order batsmen will now face greater responsibility. He remarked, “In his absence, there will be a lot of responsibility on the top three batters, who are also not in the best form.” Furthermore, he questioned the team’s strategy in the middle overs, asking, “Will India go with KL Rahul, or will Rishabh move up the order? Or will Shubman open the innings with Rohit?” Clearly, there are several crucial decisions to make. Raina also pointed out that Suryakumar’s inclusion would have offered much-needed flexibility in the batting order, making it easier to adapt to different match situations.

Suryakumar’s ODI Statistics

Suryakumar has played 37 ODIs, scoring 773 runs at an average of 25.76. His most recent ODI appearance was in the 2023 World Cup final, where India lost to Australia. He managed 106 runs in seven matches during the tournament, with an average of 17.66.

India’s Champions Trophy 2025 Squad

Looking ahead, India will face Bangladesh on February 20 and Pakistan on February 23 in the Champions Trophy 2025.

The squad for the tournament includes Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah*, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja.
*Harshit Rana will replace Bumrah in the squad for the England ODI series until Bumrah recovers.

Chahar Opens Up About His CSK Bond and Auction Twist

December 1, 2024, 2:49 pm

The IPL auction often surprises, making it hard to predict where players will go. Deepak Chahar, a key player for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), was caught in a bidding war between CSK and Mumbai Indians. Eventually, Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, won the bid. Chahar had hoped to stay with CSK, but the auction results changed everything. Still, he holds no ill feelings toward CSK.

A Special Bond with MS Dhoni

Chahar has a special connection with CSK, which he credits to MS Dhoni. He shared that Dhoni’s support made him want to continue with the franchise. “Mahi bhai has supported me from the start, that’s why I wanted to go to CSK. But my name came on the second day at the auction, so I had a fair idea that it would be difficult for me to get back to CSK. They had a low purse, but still bid till INR 9 crore despite a purse of INR 13 crore,” Chahar explained.

Challenges During the Auction

Chahar’s name came up on Day 2 of the auction. By then, CSK had already spent most of their available funds. With only INR 13 crore left, Chahar knew it would be tough for them to afford him. “I had made up my mind that it would be difficult. Last year, my name came first, that’s why it was easier to get back to CSK,” he said.

A New Opportunity with Mumbai Indians

Chahar enjoyed his time at CSK, especially under MS Dhoni’s mentorship. However, the 2025 season offers a fresh start. While Chahar hasn’t been part of India’s national team lately, playing with players like Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Suryakumar Yadav at Mumbai Indians could help boost his international career.

This move is a new chapter for Chahar, giving him the chance to rediscover his form and aim for a return to the Indian team.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Heartfelt Gesture Toward India Cap Melts Fans | Watch

November 16, 2024, 9:18 pm

Suryakumar Yadav’s heartwarming act during the fourth T20I against South Africa has won over social media. Leading India to a 3-1 series victory on November 15, Suryakumar displayed an endearing moment of respect at Johannesburg’s Wanderers Stadium. During the second innings, as India celebrated a wicket, he accidentally stepped on a Team India cap that had fallen. Realizing this, Suryakumar immediately picked up the cap, kissed it respectfully, and handed it to Rinku Singh before embracing his teammate.

A fan shared the clip on Instagram, captioning it, “Respect for Surya 100.” The post has since gone viral, with fans lauding the Indian skipper’s reverence for the cap. One admirer commented, “Surya is the most selfless captain, leading this young team with total understanding.” Another added, “He knows the hard work behind earning that cap.”

Suryakumar’s leadership was also evident in his selfless decision-making during the match. In the first innings, he promoted Tilak Varma up the order. Explaining the move, he said, “It was running in my mind that there has been a time when one man consistently batted at number three and did wonders for India… This was a perfect opportunity for a young guy… He just walked the talk.”

Suryakumar Yadav Reflects on India’s Huge Win Over South Africa

November 16, 2024, 7:10 am

India secured a massive 135-run victory over South Africa in the fourth T20I in Johannesburg. This win sealed the series 3-1. Captain Suryakumar Yadav praised the team’s focus and execution.

Good Habits Led the Way

Suryakumar said the team was not worried about the result. Instead, they focused on maintaining their good habits. The series was already in India’s favor at 2-1, but they wanted to finish strong.

“There’s no secret to adapting to the conditions and situations. Our plans were very clear as soon as we landed in Durban. Last time when we came here, we played the same brand of cricket and wanted to continue that. Though we were up 2-1 in the series, today we wanted to follow the good habits and not worry about the result,” Suryakumar explained.

Stellar Batting Performance

The skipper applauded Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Varma for their brilliant batting. They executed the team’s plan perfectly.

“It’s very difficult for me to choose one good knock from them, it was amazing batting skills displayed by them. We spoke about that and they literally walked the talk. When we toured last year, we knew there was something in this wicket once the lights were on and the temperature dropped,” he added.

India Sets a Huge Target

After winning the toss, Suryakumar chose to bat first. The decision paid off. Openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma built a solid 73-run partnership. Abhishek smashed 2 fours and 4 sixes before Lutho Sipamla dismissed him in the sixth over.

Then, Samson and Tilak Varma took control. Samson reached his century in just 51 balls. Shortly after, Tilak scored his second T20I hundred. Together, they added a record-breaking 210-run partnership.

India finished at a staggering 283/1. Samson scored 109 off 51 balls. Tilak stayed unbeaten with 120 off 47 deliveries. The South African bowlers struggled, with Sipamla taking the only wicket but conceding heavily.

South Africa Falls Apart

South Africa’s chase started poorly. While Tristan Stubbs (43 off 29 balls) and David Miller (36 off 27 balls) tried to fight back, the rest of the batting lineup crumbled.

Indian bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Varun Chakaravarthy bowled exceptionally well. They restricted South Africa to 148 with one over to spare.

Match Summary

India: 283/1 (20 Overs) Tilak Verma – 120*(47), Sanju Samson – 109*(56), Macro Jansen 1/42(4)
South Africa: 283/1 (20 Overs) Tristan Stubbs – 43(29), David Miller – 36(27), Arshdeep Singh – 3/20(3)

India’s powerful performance in Johannesburg highlighted their dominance. The team’s discipline and execution secured the series in style.

Here’s Why India Won’t Be Traveling To Pakistan for ICC Champions Trophy: Suryakumar Yadav Answers | WATCH

November 12, 2024, 10:52 am

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently confirmed that India will not be sending its national team to Pakistan for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, citing security concerns. This announcement has sparked an intense debate among fans and former cricketers, with mixed opinions emerging from both sides of the border.

Security Concerns and India’s Stance

The BCCI’s decision to not travel to Pakistan has primarily been attributed to security reasons, which the board claims makes it unfeasible for the Indian team to participate in the event. However, former Pakistan cricketers have come forward, asserting that the security situation in Pakistan has improved significantly, and the country is now as safe as it can be for international teams.

Despite these claims, the BCCI’s position remains firm, leaving many to question whether security issues are the sole reason for the decision or if there are underlying political factors at play.

Suryakumar Yadav Addresses Fan’s Question

During a recent interaction with fans, India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav was confronted by a fan who asked him directly about the reasons behind India’s decision.

The fan, curious about why the Indian team wasn’t traveling to Pakistan, asked: “Mujhe ek baat bata saktein hai ke Pakistan kyu nahi aa rahe aap (Tell me why are you not coming to Pakistan)?”

Suryakumar, offering a candid response, clarified that the matter was not within the players’ control. He responded, “Arrey bhaiya, hamare hath mein thodi hai (Brother, it is not in our hands).”

Pakistan’s Response and PCB’s Stance

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed its frustration over India’s stance and is reportedly considering its own options in response. There have been discussions within the PCB about boycotting the Champions Trophy if India continues to refuse to travel to Pakistan. In addition, it is understood that the Pakistani government is closely monitoring the situation, with some reports indicating that the government might intervene to ensure Pakistan’s participation.

According to sources quoted by Dawn, the government is mulling over the possibility of asking the PCB to consider not taking part in the tournament if India refuses to travel.

Future of the 2025 Champions Trophy

With the growing tensions surrounding the venue, the future of the 2025 Champions Trophy remains uncertain. One possible solution that has been suggested by the BCCI is the adoption of a hybrid format for the tournament, which would allow matches to be played in both Pakistan and other neutral locations.

However, no official decision on the format or the participation of both India and Pakistan has been made yet. It is expected that the PCB will continue to deliberate on the matter, but a resolution might not be reached anytime soon.

A Heated Debate in the Cricketing World

The controversy surrounding the Champions Trophy has sparked intense debates not only in India and Pakistan but also among cricket fans worldwide. With opinions divided on the safety of the venue and the political implications of the situation, it remains to be seen how the ICC and both cricket boards will handle the issue as the tournament draws nearer.

As it stands, the ongoing saga around the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy continues to develop, with no clear end in sight. The fate of the tournament and the participation of both countries will likely hinge on diplomatic negotiations, as well as the security situation in Pakistan.

Suryakumar Yadav Joins Elite List As 3rd Fastest Batter Worldwide After Babar Azam & Virat Kohli

October 13, 2024, 5:45 pm

Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav delivered an impressive performance, scoring 75 runs from 35 balls in the third T20I against Bangladesh at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Saturday (October 12). The 34-year-old right-hander came in at No. 3 following Abhishek Sharma’s early dismissal and smashed eight fours and five sixes during his stay. He shared a massive 173-run second-wicket stand with Sanju Samson (111), helping India post a formidable total of 297/6 in their 20 overs.

In the process of his 75-run knock, Suryakumar surpassed the 2500-run milestone in T20Is, making him the third fastest player in the world to do so, after Pakistan’s Babar Azam and India’s Virat Kohli. Babar reached the 2500-run mark in his 67th match, while Kohli needed 73 matches. Saturday’s game marked Suryakumar’s 74th T20I.

Fastest to 2500 runs in T20Is:

– Babar Azam (Pakistan) – 67 matches

– Virat Kohli (India) – 73 matches

– Suryakumar Yadav (India) – 74 matches

– Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan) – 76 matches

– Aaron Finch (Australia) – 78 matches

Rohit Sharma is the only other Indian to surpass 2500 T20I runs, achieving the milestone in his 100th match.

In addition, Suryakumar has now moved into a tie for third place on the list of batters with the most sixes in T20Is, with 144 sixes in 74 matches. West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran also holds 144 sixes in T20Is.

Most sixes in T20Is:

– Rohit Sharma (India) – 205 sixes

– Martin Guptill (New Zealand) – 173 sixes

– Suryakumar Yadav (India) – 144 sixes

– Nicholas Pooran (West Indies) – 144 sixes

– Jos Buttler (England) – 137 sixes

The victory over Bangladesh also saw Suryakumar become India’s fourth most successful T20I captain, surpassing Hardik Pandya’s 10 wins from 16 matches. Suryakumar has now led India to 11 wins out of 13 matches.

Most wins as Indian captain in T20Is:

– Rohit Sharma – 49 wins

– MS Dhoni – 42 wins

– Virat Kohli – 32 wins

– Suryakumar Yadav – 11 wins

– Hardik Pandya – 10 wins

Under Suryakumar’s leadership, India has secured victories in four matches against Australia (Nov-Dec 2023), one against South Africa, and three each against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Notably, India won the third T20I against Sri Lanka in July 2024 in a super over after the match ended in a tie.

Harsh Goenka Highlights The ‘Most Amazing Catch’—And It’s Not Suryakumar Yadav

September 13, 2024, 6:00 pm

Remember Suryakumar Yadav’s spectacular match-winning catch in the T20 World Cup final, which was celebrated as one of the greatest catches in cricket history? Despite this, Harsh Goenka, chairman of RPG Enterprises, recently expressed a different opinion on social media. He shared a clip from a 2023 Big Bash League match between Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers, praising Michael Neser’s controversial boundary catch as his personal favorite.

Goenka commented, “This is the most amazing catch I have seen— even better than the catch SKY had taken.” His post has sparked debate among cricket fans.

This is the most amazing catch I have seen- even better than the catch SKY had taken … pic.twitter.com/HGvqsQzpVI

— Harsh Goenka (@hvgoenka) September 12, 2024

In the video, Neser appears to make a remarkable catch while staying within the boundary. He initially catches the ball, steps outside the boundary line, and then re-enters to complete the catch. While umpires accepted the catch as valid, the decision stirred controversy online, with many questioning the rule.

Despite the debate, fans remain divided. One user argued, “He had enough time and room to take it. Sure he had presence of mind, but SKY did it in far less time and space.”

Another commenter said, “Sir, presence of mind for sure, but @ICC needs to get their technicalities in practical order for legal catches. This should have been given not out. Player tossing the ball multiple times while being outside the official playing area. This doesn’t seem right.”

‘Rohit Ka Chela’ Delivers As A Great Leader: Ex-India Star Hails Suryakumar Yadav

August 1, 2024, 12:29 pm

India secured a commanding 3-0 clean sweep in their T20I series against Sri Lanka, clinching victory in a thrilling Super Over finish in the final match held on Tuesday. Despite a strong position in their run chase, Sri Lanka faltered under the strategic brilliance of India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav.

Sri Lanka, initially at 110/1, succumbed to India’s disciplined bowling attack. Suryakumar’s unconventional decision to introduce Rinku Singh for the 19th over and then bowl the final over himself proved to be pivotal. Sri Lanka, who had been in a promising position, ended their innings at 137/8, with India managing to restrict them effectively.

Bhai Rohit Sharma ka chela hai Surya.. 19th over Rinku se, 20th over khud SKY and won the game. What else one needs to be a great leader?

— Mohammad Kaif (@MohammadKaif) July 30, 2024

In the Super Over, India outperformed Sri Lanka, sealing a comprehensive victory to cap off a perfect series. Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif praised Suryakumar’s captaincy on social media, highlighting the strategic moves that led to the win. “Bhai Rohit Sharma ka chela hai Surya… 19th over Rinku se, 20th over khud SKY and won the game. What else one needs to be a great leader?” Kaif posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Rinku Singh, who was brought into bowl the 19th over, delivered an exceptional performance, taking two wickets and conceding just three runs. Suryakumar Yadav then took on the responsibility of the last over, claiming two more wickets and helping to push the match into a Super Over.

In a video shared by the BCCI, Rinku reflected on his unexpected bowling opportunity: “I had been told by Surya to be prepared for bowling in this series. Though I hadn’t bowled much recently, he asked me to practice and be ready. When he asked me to bowl, it was like a divine plan – I ended up taking two wickets.”

Washington Sundar, who contributed with both bat and ball, praised Suryakumar’s tactical acumen: “Bringing in Rinku for the 19th over was a brilliant decision by Surya. He’s shown his potential in practice, and his performance under pressure was outstanding. Surya’s decision to bowl the final over in such a crucial situation was remarkable.”

Suryakumar’s inventive captaincy and the exceptional performances by his teammates ensured India’s successful series sweep, leaving a lasting impression on fans and critics alike.

Rohit Sharma’s ‘Perfect’ Reaction To Suryakumar Yadav And Gautam Gambhir After India’s T20I Victory Over Sri Lanka

July 31, 2024, 10:05 am

Suryakumar Yadav and Gautam Gambhir ushered in a new era for Indian cricket with a perfect start, as India defeated Sri Lanka in the third and final T20I match to secure a 3-0 series whitewash. This victory marks India’s first T20I whitewash against Sri Lanka in a series of at least three matches held in Sri Lanka, and their third overall.

Following the dramatic win in Pallekele on Tuesday, achieved through a Super Over, Rohit Sharma, set to lead India in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka, shared a “perfect” Instagram post celebrating the team’s success.

A post shared by Rohit Sharma (@rohitsharma45)

India entered the final game with the series already clinched, having won the first two matches. Four changes were made to the playing XI for the final match. Despite being put to bat first on a pitch affected by rainfall over the previous 24 hours, India faced early setbacks, finding themselves at 30 for four within the powerplay and 48 for five shortly after. Shubman Gill and Riyan Parag then formed a crucial fifty-run partnership, and Washington Sundar’s handy cameo helped India post a competitive total of 137 on a spinning track.

Sri Lanka’s openers began the chase cautiously, building a fifty-run stand. The two Kusals, Perera and Mendis, set a solid foundation, appearing to guide the hosts to a consolation win. However, Sri Lanka’s batting lineup crumbled under pressure in the death overs, failing to score 9 runs off the final 12 balls against part-timers Rinku Singh and Suryakumar Yadav.

In the Super Over, Washington Sundar dashed Sri Lanka’s hopes by taking two wickets for just two runs in three deliveries. India wrapped up the chase with the first ball, completing the whitewash over Sri Lanka.

Rohit Sharma celebrated the victory by sharing a photo from the trophy celebration on Instagram, captioning it, “Perfect start. Well done Team India.”

Rohit Sharma Returns After Prolonged Break

Ahead of the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka from August 3-7, Rohit Sharma arrived in Colombo on Sunday.. This series will mark his first match since winning the T20 World Cup last month in Barbados, following his retirement from the international format. It will also be his first appearance in ODIs since the 2023 World Cup final loss against Australia in Ahmedabad.

The ODI series will kick off India’s preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy next year, as the team looks to build on their recent successes and continue their winning momentum.

Suryakumar Yadav Wanted This Player for Sri Lanka Series Instead of Riyan Parag; BCCI Denied Due to This Reason

July 25, 2024, 4:24 pm

India’s T20I squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, starting July 27, sees a notable change in leadership with Suryakumar Yadav appointed as the new captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the shortest format. The 15-member squad also features Shubman Gill as the vice-captain, and includes players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Riyan Parag, Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Mohd. Siraj.

The squad selection has been influenced by injuries and recent performances. Tilak Varma, who was initially considered for the series, has been sidelined due to an injury, leading to Riyan Parag’s inclusion. Parag, who made his T20I debut during the Zimbabwe series, has impressed selectors with his all-round capabilities and recent improvement in game awareness. According to The Times of India, a BCCI source mentioned, “Parag is highly talented and has improved his attitude towards the game by several notches. He’s now looking to stay at the wicket. To add to his value, he can bowl decently and is a terrific fielder to boot. The selectors want to nurture him for the future.”

Despite Tilak Varma’s absence, his promising T20I record—336 runs from 15 innings, including two fifties, at an average of 33.60 and a strike rate of 139.42—suggests he remains a key prospect for the Indian team. Additionally, Mumbai Indians’ IPL star Nuwan Thushara has been ruled out of the T20Is due to injury, further affecting team dynamics. The series under Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership marks a new phase for the Indian team as they look to build on recent performances and integrate emerging talent into their setup.

Ex Pak Captain Says This Player Would Have Been a Better Captain Than Suryakumar Yadav

July 25, 2024, 3:45 pm

India is gearing up to face Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series starting from July 27, marking Gautam Gambhir’s first series as the new head coach. One of Gambhir’s significant early decisions was appointing Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement after the successful T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. This move surprised many, as Hardik Pandya, the vice-captain during the World Cup, was expected to take over.

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif voiced his opinion on the matter, suggesting that if Hardik wasn’t the first choice, Rishabh Pant should have been made captain instead. Latif criticized the fitness argument used to sideline Hardik, pointing out that many historically great captains have had fitness issues.

Key Points:

– Gautam Gambhir’s First Series: This series marks Gambhir’s debut as head coach.

– New T20I Captain: Suryakumar Yadav was chosen over Hardik Pandya, who was the vice-captain during the T20 World Cup 2024.

– Rashid Latif’s Opinion: Latif believes Rishabh Pant would have been a better choice if Hardik was not considered, criticizing the fitness excuse.

– Hardik Pandya’s Role: Despite not being captain, Pandya remains a crucial part of the team. However, he has opted out of the ODI series for personal reasons and has been asked to play in the Duleep Trophy to prove his bowling fitness.

India Squad for T20I Series vs. Sri Lanka:

– Captain: Suryakumar Yadav

– Vice-Captain: Shubman Gill

– Players: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Riyan Parag, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Mohammad Siraj.

Insights:

– Gambhir’s Strategy: The decision to appoint Suryakumar as captain reflects Gambhir’s focus on a fresh leadership approach and addressing fitness and workload management issues.

– Future Prospects: The squad selection and captaincy decisions indicate a strategic look at the future, balancing experienced players with emerging talents.

This series against Sri Lanka will be an exciting start to Gambhir’s tenure and an opportunity for Suryakumar Yadav to prove his leadership capabilities.

IPL 2025 Auction: 5 MI Players Who Could Be Released in the Mega Auction; Will the Likes of Rohit, Suryakumar Stay?

July 25, 2024, 3:22 pm

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set for a significant shakeup in the 2025 season with the announcement of a mega auction after three years. This event will see franchises releasing players and acquiring new talent, resulting in potentially drastic changes to team rosters. The Mumbai Indians (MI), in particular, are under the spotlight following their disappointing performance in IPL 2024, where they finished last. Rumors of discontent within the team, especially involving Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, further suggest that the franchise may undergo significant changes.

Here are five players Mumbai Indians might release before the IPL 2025 auction:

1. Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma’s tenure with Mumbai Indians could be nearing its end after a major fallout in IPL 2024. Replaced as captain by Hardik Pandya, who was traded in from Gujarat Titans, Rohit expressed his frustration in a viral conversation with KKR assistant coach Abhishek Nayar. Given these circumstances, it wouldn’t be surprising if Rohit seeks a move to a team in need of a captain, such as Delhi Capitals or Sunrisers Hyderabad.

2. Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav, currently India’s best T20 batter, has been appointed captain of the national team in the shortest format. With Hardik Pandya leading MI, Yadav might look to move to another franchise where he could take on a leadership role. Reports suggest he was part of a core group dissatisfied with Pandya’s captaincy, which could further fuel his departure.

3. Tilak Varma

Tilak Varma is one of the brightest rising stars in Indian cricket, having scored 416 runs in 13 games in IPL 2024. Known to be close to Rohit Sharma, Varma might seek a release if Rohit leaves the franchise. His potential departure could be driven by loyalty and the desire to continue playing under a mentor figure.

4. Piyush Chawla

Veteran spinner Piyush Chawla has been a key performer for Mumbai Indians, but with age catching up and a lacklustre IPL 2024, MI might consider releasing him to make room for a younger Indian spinner. Chawla’s experience and past performances might still make him a valuable asset for other teams looking for seasoned spinners.

5. Arjun Tendulkar

Arjun Tendulkar has been with Mumbai Indians since IPL 2021 but has not had many opportunities to showcase his talent. Given his limited impact in the few matches he has played, MI might opt to release him to free up a spot for a player who could contribute more consistently.

As the mega auction approaches, these potential releases could signify a new chapter for Mumbai Indians, allowing them to rebuild and strategize for future successes while addressing any internal team dynamics that may have contributed to their underperformance in 2024.

Former India Player Lambasts Ajit Agarkar, Gautam Gambhir Over Their India-Captaincy Decision

July 24, 2024, 4:52 pm

Former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth expressed his dissatisfaction with the explanations provided by Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir regarding the decision to appoint Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain over Hardik Pandya. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made its stance clear through Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, who cited Hardik’s fitness as a primary concern for not selecting him for the leadership role. However, Srikkanth isn’t convinced by this rationale.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth suggested that the selectors might have based their decision on feedback from the dressing room, particularly influenced by this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) where Hardik Pandya’s team, Mumbai Indians, finished last. Srikkanth questioned the fitness argument, noting that Hardik played the entire IPL season and even bowled.

“I think they have gone from the feedback of the dressing room. It must have probably been from the IPL. Fitness is something that I will not agree with. He played the entire IPL. He also bowled. Yes, he might not have done well (in the IPL). That’s another issue. Mumbai Indians didn’t qualify. At the World Cup, he was the vice-captain and he played well. So, fitness is something that I won’t agree with,” Srikkanth said.

While acknowledging Suryakumar’s capabilities as a captain, Srikkanth believes that the selectors should have been more straightforward in their explanation.

“Feedback from the dressing room? I am not able to understand that. Yes, Suryakumar has the qualities to be captain. I agree with that. He could prove to be a very good captain. But the reasons for dropping Hardik Pandya as captain are beating around the bush in terms of the reasoning.”

Srikkanth urged the selectors to be clear and fearless in their communication.

“Suryakumar is a fantastic person. I like him. So is Hardik. But the reasons that they are giving, they could have said it in a straightforward manner: ‘We are dropping Hardik Pandya as captain, we want to move forward. We are looking at Suryakumar as a long-term captain.’ Make it clear. Say it without fear.”

Reflecting on his own experience as a chairman of selectors, Srikkanth emphasized the importance of providing clear explanations for such decisions.

“I have also been chairman. I have picked players, dropped players, and faced a lot of criticism. I am not saying I was God, I have also made mistakes. But you have to give a good explanation. I am not convinced by the reasoning,” he asserted.

“De Do Bhaiya Bat”: Rinku Singh and Suryakumar Yadav’s Banter is a Delight for Indian Cricket Fans

July 24, 2024, 4:16 pm

In a funny exchange on social media, India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh entertained their fans, reminding them of the viral video from the Indian Premier League earlier this year when Rinku was seen requesting Virat Kohli to give him a bat. The Indian team is currently on the tour of Sri Lanka, which is set to begin on July 27 with the first T20I.

In an Instagram story that has gone viral, Surya posted an image of himself talking to Rinku. Below the image, he wrote: “Theek hai bat le lena” (Okay, take the bat). Taking the banter ahead, Rinku reposted the story and added: “De do bhaiya bat” (Give it, brother).

Surya pipped Hardik Pandya to get the BCCI’s nod for T20I captaincy. Having led India twice in the shortest format in the past, Surya will captain the side for a three-match T20I series in the island nation. The T20I leg of the tour will be followed by an ODI series, where Rohit Sharma will continue to captain the squad that will also include Virat Kohli.

The tour is the first assignment for Gautam Gambhir since he took over from Rahul Dravid as India’s new chief coach after the T20 World Cup last month.

Brothers Before Captain: Hardik and Surya Put Captaincy Controversy to Rest with This Moment – WATCH

July 24, 2024, 2:30 pm

As India’s captaincy in the shortest format remains the biggest talking point, the well-wishers of Indian cricket wonder how the change in leadership could impact the relationship between Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya. Though the BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed that Hardik was spoken to before the T20I captaincy was handed over to Suryakumar, concerns still remain over the leadership dynamics in the team. However, Hardik put all such talks to bed with his big gesture as the two left for Sri Lanka for a white-ball series.

In a video shared by the BCCI, Hardik gave Surya a hug as the two met before taking the flight to Sri Lanka.

Earlier, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir spoke to the media at a joint press conference, during which the topic of the T20I captaincy controversy was also brought up.

“Why Surya was made captain? Because he is one of the deserving candidates. The one we know has been around the dressing room over the last one year, you get feedback from the dressing room a lot. He has got a good cricketing brain and he is still one of the best T20 batters in the world,” Agarkar said during the press conference.

“You (would) want a captain that’s going to be more likely to play all the games. We think he’s a deserving candidate and hopefully we’ll see over time how he develops into the role.”

The chairman of selectors said they wanted a captain with a proven fitness record and not someone who was prone to injuries as Pandya is believed to be.

Agarkar also confirmed that Hardik remains a crucial part of the Indian team in the white-ball circuit.

“But in regards to Hardik (Pandya), he’s still a very important player for us and that’s what we want him to be that player that he can be because those sorts of skill sets are very difficult to find what he has,” Agarkar said.

“We’re trying to now, we’ve got a bit more time till the next T20 World Cup when we can look at a few things. It’s not rushed at the moment.”

“We want him to be, you know, as I said, he’s an important player for us, and hopefully, his performances are more important – that was the thought behind it. The fitness is a clear challenge and we want someone who’s likely to be available more often than not,” Agarkar said.

What Led To Hardik Pandya Losing India T20 Captaincy To Suryakumar Yadav?

July 22, 2024, 1:23 pm

Suryakumar Yadav, a 33-year-old explosive middle-order batsman, was named as the new T20 captain for India’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Agarkar praised Suryakumar’s leadership qualities and his exceptional performance as one of the top T20 batters globally. “We feel that Suryakumar has all the necessary qualities to be a good captain,” Agarkar noted. “We wanted a captain who is likely to play all the games.”

Hardik Pandya, who has reportedly opted out of the subsequent three one-day internationals in Sri Lanka, remains an important player, according to Agarkar. “His skill sets are hard to find,” he added.

Gautam Gambhir, the newly appointed coach, also shared his coaching philosophy. Emphasizing the importance of trust and freedom for players, Gambhir stated, “The best relationship is built on trust. I can promise that the most important thing is that they will always have my back.”

Rohit Sharma, aged 37, and Virat Kohli, 35, both stepped back from T20 internationals post-World Cup. Gambhir expressed confidence in their continued value for the Test and 50-over formats and hoped they would remain motivated for future tours and tournaments.

Retirement decisions, Gambhir concluded, are deeply personal, and he respects the choices of experienced players like Rohit and Kohli.

Ajit Agarkar Opens Up On Choosing Suryakumar Yadav As T20I Captain Instead Of Hardik Pandya

July 22, 2024, 12:51 pm

Ahead of the T20I series against Sri Lanka, Indian Cricket Team’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the call to appoint right-hand batter Suryakumar Yadav as captain instead of star all-rounder Hardik Pandya for the shortest format of the game. Suryakumar Yadav was announced as the captain of the T20I on Thursday and will become the captain for the first time in the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. The three T20Is are scheduled to take place on July 27, 28 and 30.

Agarkar again highlighted the importance of Pandya to the team due to his different skill sets and challenges he had to deal with in terms of fitness.

“Hardik is always an important player for us. Those skillsets are hard to find. Fitness has been a challenge with him. Hopefully, his performances are more important than anything else. We want someone who is likely to be available more often than not. Saying all that, Surya has got all the necessary qualities to be the captain,” Agarkar said in the presser.

After the T20I series, there will be a three-match ODI series that will kick off on August 1. According to ESPNCricinfo, the Pallekele International Stadium has been set to host the T20Is, while the R Premadasa will play host to the ODI matches.

Both teams will have new head coaches. Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed as an interim head coach in Sri Lanka, while Gautam Gambhir, a former Indian opener, will take up his first assignment as head coach, succeeding the T20 World Cup-winning coach Rahul Dravid.

Last time India played a bilateral white-ball series in Sri Lanka, it was July 2021 with Dravid at the helm of the Shikhar Dhawan-led team. India clinched the ODIs 2-1 while Sri Lanka bounced back to take the T20Is by the same margin.

This will be the second T20I series for India since their victory in the T20 World Cup, where they beat South Africa by seven runs in the final. In fact, India also registered a 4-1 win over Zimbabwe in the recently held 5-match T20I series.

India T20I Squad: Suryakumar Yadav C, Shubman Gill VC, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Riyan Parag, Rishabh Pant WK, Sanju Samson WK, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Mohd. Siraj.

“Very proud”: Suryakumar’s Childhood Coach Delighted Over His Captaincy Appointment

July 19, 2024, 12:32 pm

Suryakumar Yadav’s childhood coach Ashok Aswalkar was ecstatic after the announcement of the former as India’s new T20I captain for the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka. The position fell vacant when Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20I cricket following their win in the T20 World Cup.

Shubman Gill had originally been named to captain a relatively inexperienced team for the five T20Is against Zimbabwe. Now, a different leader will lead the Indian side for the upcoming T20I matches.

Aswalkar shared his excitement over Suryakumar’s success, saying, “I had messaged him in the afternoon saying that you would get a big message today, and in the evening, when we heard the news, I felt very proud.I feel very happy. Captaincy is a slightly different role. He played in the World Cup 2024 with great players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja. By playing with such great cricketers, we get to learn a lot.”

Suryakumar has captained the Indian team before. He led them to a 4-1 T20I series win against Australia last year and then to a 1-1 series draw against South Africa this year.

Gill has been named Suryakumar’s deputy for the T20I series. Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who could have been a captaincy candidate, is in the squad but won’t have any leadership role.

The T20I series will start on July 27 from Pallekele and three ODIs would commence on August 2 in Colombo.

T20I Squad: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Riyan Parag, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Mohammed Siraj.

ODI Squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (WK), Rishabh Pant (WK), Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Riyan Parag, Axar Patel, Khaleel Ahmed, Harshit Rana.

The players are scheduled to leave for Sri Lanka on July 22, with the tour commencing with a three-match T20I series on July 27, followed by a three-match ODI series. There was significant interest in the squad announcement, particularly regarding the potential announcement of India’s new T20I captain, as Rohit Sharma retired from the format after leading the team to the 2024 T20 World Cup title last month.

The New T20I Captain: Suryakumar Yadav gets the captaincy baton from Rohit Sharma and will lead the India T20I side against Sri Lanka. Suryakumar Yadav, the 2nd ranked batsman in ICC T20 Rankings has gone one step ahead in his career to lead the Indian Team. Initially, Hardik Pandya was the likely replacement for Rohit Sharma as many would have thought but the new Head Coach Gautam Gambhir preferred Suryakumar over Hardik due to the latter’s past injury woes.

India Squad: T20I Squad: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Ꮪhubman Gill (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Riyan Parag, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Mohd. Siraj.

ODI Squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (WK), Rishabh Pant (WK), Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Riyan Parag, Axar Patel, Khaleel Ahmed, Harshit Rana.

This will also mark Gautam Gambhir’s first major decision as the new head coach of the Indian team. Rahul Dravid stepped down from the position after the T20 World Cup, and the BCCI quickly announced Gambhir as his replacement. Initially, seasoned players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah were expected to miss the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka.

Race to Captaincy: Gautam Gambhir Didn’t Pitch for Surya or Hardik But Kept This One Condition

The discussions over who will become the next Indian cricket team T20I captain have intensified, with Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav emerging as the two major contenders. Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the format following India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph has left the captaincy position open. While Hardik, as vice-captain, was initially the favorite to succeed Rohit, Suryakumar has recently emerged as a strong contender due to concerns about Hardik’s injury record.

Media reports suggest that Suryakumar Yadav, popularly known as SKY, is likely to be named captain for the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka. The squad announcement is expected on Thursday. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, during an informal call with BCCI officials and the selection committee, expressed a preference for a captain whose injury and workload management would not pose future problems. Although Gambhir did not explicitly endorse Suryakumar, he made it clear that he favored a skipper with a manageable workload.

A BCCI official told Hindustan Times, “Although Gambhir did not directly pitch for Surya in the call, he made it amply clear that he would want to work with a captain whose workload does not become a stumbling block. Agarkar was clear with his views.”

Meanwhile, in the ICC T20I batting rankings issued on Wednesday, Suryakumar Yadav remains the highest-placed Indian at the second spot, while young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal occupies the sixth position. Ruturaj Gaikwad has dropped to eighth place. Jaiswal’s impressive performance in India’s recent 4-1 series triumph over Zimbabwe, where he scored 141 runs, helped him rise four places, trailing only behind the No.1 ranked batter Travis Head of Australia and Suryakumar. Shubman Gill, who led India against Zimbabwe and was the leading run-scorer with 170 runs from five innings, moved up 36 places to 37th.

No Indian bowler features in the top 10 of the T20I bowlers’ rankings, with Axar Patel dropping four places to the 13th spot after being rested for the Zimbabwe series.
