Addressing AAP workers at the party office, Kejriwal declared that he does not seek power for its own sake and will not resume his position until he receives a “certificate of honesty” from the people.

Kejriwal was released on bail on Friday in connection with the excise policy corruption case. His unexpected resignation announcement has led to speculation about potential successors, including his wife Sunita and Delhi Ministers Atishi and Gopal Rai.

Reason Behind the 48-Hour Delay

Kejriwal stated, “I am going to resign after two days and ask people whether I am honest. Till they respond, I won’t sit on CM’s chair… I will only sit on CM’s chair after people give me a certificate of honesty. I want to give ‘agnipariksha’ (trial by fire) after coming out of jail.”

The BJP has criticized Kejriwal’s decision to delay his resignation, questioning the need for 48 hours. Delhi Minister Atishi explained that the timing is due to the weekend and a holiday for Eid-e-Milad, making the next working day Tuesday.

BJP’s Criticism

The BJP has alleged that Kejriwal’s request for 48 hours may be to find a replacement or make adjustments. BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi remarked, “Delhi’s voters rendered their verdict three months ago, resulting in the loss of all seven seats. The entire council of ministers should resign and let elections be held in November. The public is fed up with them.”

BJP leader Harish Khurana questioned the delay, asking why Kejriwal does not resign immediately. He suggested that Kejriwal’s actions are part of a theatrical performance and criticized the need for a delay in resignation.

Congress Responds

Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit criticized Kejriwal’s move as a gimmick, saying, “There is no question of becoming the CM again. We have been saying for a long time that he should resign as Chief Minister. Amid rumours of a potential alliance with the NCP (SCP) for the upcoming Haryana assembly elections, Sunita Kejriwal, wife of the incarcerated Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, met with NCP (SCP) leader Sharad Pawar at his Pune office late Sunday evening. However, NCP (SCP) Pune president Prashant Jagtap denied these speculations, stating that the meeting was simply a courtesy call and had no political implications.

“Sunita Kejriwal was in Pune for personal work and paid a visit to Pawar Saheb’s office. There was no political discussion between them. It was a personal meeting,” Jagtap told ANI.

In contrast to Jagtap’s statement, Aam Aadmi Party’s Maharashtra spokesperson Mukund Kirdat asserted that Sunita Kejriwal met with Pawar to seek his support for her husband’s release.

“As per my information, during the meeting, Sunita Kejriwal likely sought support to plan a nationwide protest by the I.N.D.I.A. bloc in support of Arvind Kejriwal before his bail hearing later this month. Beyond this, I am unsure whether they discussed the Haryana and Maharashtra elections. She directly went to the office and then returned to Delhi,” Kirdat said.

The Haryana assembly election is set for October 1, as confirmed by the Election Commission of India, while the election schedule for Maharashtra has not yet been announced. Earlier this month, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray visited Sunita Kejriwal at the Delhi CM’s residence during his three-day stay in the national capital. Gupta also revealed that AAP is gearing up to contest all 90 assembly seats in Haryana. “The Aam Aadmi Party is preparing for 90 assembly seats, with ongoing preparations at every booth. On the day Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla condemned the 1975 Emergency, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, criticized the government, alleging a concerted effort to keep her husband in jail, likening it to “dictatorship” and “Emergency.”

“Arvind Kejriwal was granted bail on June 20. Immediately, the ED obtained a stay. The very next day, the CBI named him an accused. And today, he was arrested. The entire system is ensuring he remains in jail. This isn’t law; this is dictatorship, this is an emergency,” Sunita Kejriwal posted on ‘X’.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday from the courtroom in connection with the Excise policy case. The arrest followed permission from the Vacation Judge of the Delhi Court to question him in court and formally arrest him. The court instructed the CBI to present the evidence justifying the arrest.

Kejriwal appeared before the court of Vacation Judge Amitabh Rawat as per the production warrant issued the previous day.

Meanwhile, NDA leaders protested in the Parliament premises on Wednesday marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, demanding an apology from the Congress.

The plea alleges that Kejriwal and others unlawfully recorded the proceedings of a trial court when the Delhi CM was produced before it on March 28, 2024. Filed by Vaibhav Singh, a practicing lawyer, the plea accuses Kejriwal and others of not only recording the proceedings in an unauthorized manner but also sharing them on social media platforms.

Arvind Kejriwal To Return To Tihar Jail As Temporary Bail Ends

Tihar Jail officials stated that meetings with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal are scheduled based on the order of permission requests. Sunita Kejriwal’s visit to her husband is anticipated for next week, as per jail sources on Sunday.

The jail authorities mentioned that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Atishi and Bhagwant Mann had already secured permission for meetings with Kejriwal on April 29 and 30, respectively, by making prior requests. They added that permissions are granted in the order they are requested, and Sunita Kejriwal hadn’t made a prior request.

As per jail regulations, visits are limited to twice a week, with both slots for the upcoming week already allocated. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in connection with a money laundering investigation related to alleged irregularities in the Delhi excise policy 2021-22, which has since been scrapped.

Arvind Kejriwal, the national leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, was arrested in an excise policy case. In reaction, party members in the capital launched a protest campaign called ‘Jail Ka Jawab Vote Se’ on Saturday morning.

AAP East Delhi Lok Sabha candidate, Kuldeep Kumar, asserted that the people of Delhi are enraged and are determined to impart a lesson to the Bharatiya Janata Party on May 25, during a demonstration outside the Laxmi Nagar Metro station ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi.

“BJP has conspired to put a popular Chief Minister behind bars in a fake case. The people of Delhi will teach BJP a lesson on May 25. The public in Delhi is angry over Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest,” Kuldeep Kumar told ANI.

Arvind Kejriwal was apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in connection to a money-laundering probe concerning the previously scrapped excise policy of the Delhi government. Since April 1, he has remained in custody at Tihar Jail.

Sunita Kejriwal, the spouse of the Delhi Chief Minister, is set to conduct a roadshow in the East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency on Saturday, followed by another in the West Delhi Lok Sabha constituency on April 28.

Arvind Kejriwal’s Wife to attend INDIA Bloc Rally in Jharkhand

Sunita Kejriwal, the wife of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, is set to participate in the “Nyay Ulgulan Rally” organized by the INDIA bloc in Ranchi, Jharkhand, on April 21. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP MP Sanjay Singh are also expected to attend the rally.

A meeting was held by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) to discuss preparations for the rally. Kalpana Soren, a leader of the JMM, along with other party members, convened to ensure the success of the event. Sanjay Singh of the AAP warned of dire consequences if the BJP were to win the upcoming elections, claiming that they would amend the constitution and undermine democratic principles.

“The 2024 Lok Sabha election is the last election. This time, if by mistake Narendra Modi’s government comes to power, he will change the constitution of the country. These people will end elections and reservation. They will snatch away the rights of youth, farmers and women. This fear is getting stronger every day,” Sanjay Singh had said.

Jharkhand is scheduled to hold elections in four phases starting from May 13. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 12 seats in Jharkhand, with the BJP winning 11 and the JMM and Congress securing one seat each.

An AAP functionary conveyed, “The MLAs [members of legislative assembly] assured Sunita Kejriwal that the 20 million people of Delhi stand with Arvind Kejriwal…[he] should not step down under any circumstances, and should administer Delhi from jail.” The functionary mentioned the participation of 55 lawmakers in the meeting, with three legislators—Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Satyendra Jain—behind bars, and four others absent from Delhi.

With 62 seats in the 70-member assembly, AAP dominates while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holds the remaining eight.

An AAP lawmaker disclosed that the meeting with Sunita Kejriwal focused on the “current political scenario,” including alleged BJP attempts to lure AAP members and plans to arrest more party leaders.

This gathering occurred following Sunita Kejriwal’s inaugural public address on Sunday at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan during a unity demonstration organized by the Opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) ahead of the general elections. In response, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva alleged an internal power struggle within AAP, citing distrust among its members. Sachdeva claimed, “In court yesterday [Monday], Arvind Kejriwal exposed the names of [ministers] Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj in the excise scam.” He insinuated that Sunita Kejriwal seeks to gradually gain control of the party due to alleged corruption charges against Arvind Kejriwal.

Recently, special judge Kaveri Baweja remanded Arvind Kejriwal in judicial custody until April 15 in connection with the excise policy case, making him the fourth prominent AAP leader to face arrest.

AAP has consistently contended that the Enforcement Directorate’s probe into the excise case is politically motivated. Additionally, the party accused BJP of endeavoring to destabilize and oust the AAP government.

AAP legislator Rituraj Jha asserted in the Delhi assembly that BJP leaders offered him a Cabinet position and money to switch sides, alongside persuading 10 more lawmakers to follow suit.

Members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Delhi Assembly are scheduled to meet Sunita Kejriwal, the wife of the incarcerated Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in the national capital on Tuesday, as per party sources. The AAP leaders will convene at the residence of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal shortly.

Since Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection with an alleged liquor scam-linked money laundering case, Sunita Kejriwal has been conducting digital briefings similar to those previously conducted by her husband before his arrest.

Delhi Minister and AAP leader Atishi stated today that Arvind Kejriwal, who has been remanded to judicial custody till April 15 and is lodged in Tihar Jail, has not been convicted in the case and will continue to serve as chief minister.

“The Representation of the People Act stipulates that if you are convicted for more than two years, you cannot remain a public representative. Arvind Kejriwal has not been convicted… Arvind Kejriwal enjoys overwhelming support in the Delhi Assembly, so there is no reason for him to resign. If he resigns, it will be a simple solution for the Bharatiya Janata Party to topple opposition governments,” Atishi remarked.

In her first public appearance since her husband’s arrest by the ED, Sunita Kejriwal delivered a message from Arvind Kejriwal to the nation from ED custody on Sunday. It included six guarantees to the country, on behalf of the INDIA bloc, aimed at creating “a new India.”

Arvind Kejriwal was taken to jail on Monday afternoon after the conclusion of his Enforcement Directorate custodial remand. The ED labeled the Delhi Chief Minister as the “kingpin” in the alleged scam, stating that he had provided “evasive replies” and concealed information relevant to the investigation.

The case originated from a report submitted by Delhi Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar to Lieutenant Governor (LG) Vinai Kumar Saxena in July 2022, highlighting alleged procedural lapses in the policy formulation. The report indicated that decisions made by Delhi’s former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia as Excise Minister had led to “financial losses to the exchequer” estimated at over Rs 580 crore.

This report was forwarded to the CBI and resulted in Sisodia’s arrest. The ED alleged that the “scam” involved granting the wholesale liquor business to private entities and fixing a 12 percent margin, for a 6 percent kickback. In its initial prosecution complaint in November 2021, the ED claimed the policy was “formulated with deliberate loopholes” to benefit AAP leaders through “backdoor” cartel formations.

Additionally, the ED alleged that AAP leaders received kickbacks amounting to Rs 100 crore from a group of individuals identified as the “South Group.”

A day after the local court extended Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s custody until April 1, his wife, Sunita Kejriwal, announced a WhatsApp campaign named ‘Kejriwal ko Aashirwaad’ through a video statement.

“We are commencing a drive today – Kejriwal ko aashirvaad. You can send your blessings and prayers to Kejriwal on this number. You can also send whatever message you want,” Sunita Kejriwal stated.

Asserting Kejriwal’s patriotism, she remarked, “Kejriwal has stood his ground in court. He is a true patriot. Patriotism runs in his veins. Arvind has confronted the most powerful forces in the country. Will you not support your brother in this battle?”

During Thursday’s court proceedings, Arvind Kejriwal himself addressed the court, questioning the basis of his arrest with only four statements against him, including one from C Arvind, alleging he handed over documentation to Manish Sisodia in his presence.

“Numerous bureaucrats and MLAs frequently visited my home. Are these four statements from different individuals sufficient to detain a sitting Chief Minister?” Kejriwal queried.

Kejriwal cited the statements of C Arvind, Raghav Magunta, his father, and Sharath Reddy, alleging coercion to change their statements and turning people into approvers in the case.

He accused the Enforcement Directorate (ED) of orchestrating a liquor scam post their investigation, asserting the ED’s motive to crush the Aam Aadmi Party.

The Rouse Avenue Court extended Arvind Kejriwal’s custodial remand by four more days in a money laundering case linked to the Excise Policy.

Earlier, Sunita Kejriwal criticized the Centre and the ED, highlighting the failure of over 250 raids in uncovering any evidence related to the alleged liquor scam.

“I met Arvind Kejriwal in jail; despite his uncontrolled diabetes, his resolve remains strong. Just two days ago, he instructed Delhi Minister Atishi to address water and sewer-related issues. What wrong has he done? The Centre has filed a case against Arvind Kejriwal even for this. Do they aim to dismantle Delhi?” she expressed.

The INDIA bloc plans to hold a rally in Delhi on March 31 in protest against Kejirwal’s arrest.

Kejriwal is currently in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Delhi Liquor Policy case. He was apprehended by the ED on March 21, and his remand with the ED extends until March 28.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s wife to issue press statement today

The Aam Adami Party announced on Wednesday that Sunita Kejriwal, wife of jailed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, will release a press statement at noon today.

According to sources, Sunita Kejriwal is expected to make significant disclosures.

Earlier on Tuesday evening, Sunita Kejriwal met with the Delhi Chief Minister at the office of the Directorate of Enforcement (ED).

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21 in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy case linked to a money laundering investigation and was remanded to the ED till March 28.

The case involves alleged irregularities and money laundering related to the formulation and implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy 2022, which was subsequently annulled.

The case originated from a report submitted by Delhi Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar to Lieutenant Governor (LG) Vinai Kumar Saxena in July 2022, highlighting purported procedural lapses in the policy’s formulation.

The report cited “arbitrary and unilateral decisions” made by Sisodia, acting as Excise Minister, which allegedly led to “financial losses to the exchequer” amounting to over Rs 580 crore. This report prompted referral to the CBI and subsequently led to Sisodia’s arrest.

Although Kejriwal was not initially named in the FIRs filed by the ED or the Central Bureau of Investigation in the Delhi excise policy case, his name appeared for the first time in the ED’s chargesheet. The agency claimed that he purportedly engaged in a video call with Sameer Mahendru, one of the main accused, and instructed him to continue collaborating with co-accused and AAP communications-in-charge Vijay Nair.

In the message, Arvind Kejriwal expressed his determination to continue serving the country and fulfill his promises despite being in jail. He urged Aam Aadmi Party workers not to harbor ill feelings toward BJP members because of his arrest.

“Your son and brother Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has sent a message from the jail,” Sunita Kejriwal said citing her husband.

“My dear countrymen I have been arrested. Whether I am inside the jail or not, I will continue to serve the country. My entire life is dedicated to the country. I have struggled a lot in my life, and I know that this will continue. Therefore, this arrest has not surprised me,” Kejriwal said in a statement read out on video by his wife.

“I also appeal to all the workers of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that work of social welfare and public welfare should not stop with me going to jail. Don’t hate BJP people due to this. They are our brothers and sisters. I will come back soon,” he said as cited by Sunita Kejriwal.

“There are several forces within and outside India that are weakening the country. We have to be alert, identify these forces and defeat them. Women in Delhi must be thinking that Kejriwal is behind bars. Who knows if they would get Rs 1000. I appeal to them to trust their brother, their son. There is no jail that can keep him behind bars for long. Main jald bahar aaounga (I will come out soon) and keep my promise,” Sunita Kejriwal said while reading out the message by the Delhi Chief Minister.

Kejriwal also reassured the people that no prison could hold him for long, and he would soon come out and fulfill his promises. He urged everyone to remain vigilant against forces that seek to weaken the country.

Regarding his arrest, Sunita Kejriwal criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of arrogance and betrayal. She emphasized that Arvind Kejriwal has always stood with the people of Delhi and dedicated his life to the country.

“Modiji got your thrice elected Chief Minister arrested out of arrogance of power. He is trying to crush everyone. This is a betrayal of the people of Delhi. Your Chief Minister has always stood with you,” she said in a post in Hindi.
