Indian-Origin Leader Responds

<excerpt>Sundar Pichai envisions Google’s next CEO working closely with AI to benefit society. He dismisses fears of AI replacing jobs and shares how his challenging childhood in India shaped his commitment to using technology for improving lives.
</excerpt>

Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai, speaking at Bloomberg’s Tech conference in San Francisco, weighed in on what type of leader would likely succeed him at Google. Not naming anyone as the likely successor, he signaled what attributes the next CEO must have.

Pichai emphasized the high social obligation involved in running Google and said the next CEO will need to keep emphasizing building technology that benefits humans. “Whoever is at the helm will have an extraordinary AI assistant,” he said, referencing the growing role artificial intelligence will have in guiding leadership and making key decisions in the future.

No Plans to Resign

Pichai, who has led Google for more than a decade, has not indicated any near-future exit. But his remarks gave a sense of how he sees the company change and what kind of leadership it will require in the age of artificial intelligence.

Answering criticisms about AI taking human jobs, Pichai ruled out doomsday scenarios. Rather, he highlighted its ability to improve efficiency. “I just see this as making engineers much more productive, removing a lot of the mundane stuff from what they do,” he said.

He also mentioned that Google will continue to hire engineers at least through 2026, which underlies the belief of the company in human capability apart from technological innovation.

Pichai on His Indian Roots

On his recent guest appearance on the Lex Fridman Podcast, Pichai delivered a personal account of his life in India, offering a glimpse of his humble origin. He reminisced about growing up in Madras (present-day Chennai) during an era when his family did not have access to simple necessities.

“Nobody had running water. You understand, there was a huge drought. So they would haul water in these trucks, possibly eight buckets for a family. So me and my brother, every now and then my mom, we would stand in line, get that,” he said.

These experiences, he said, influenced his outlook and made him believe more strongly that technology must be focused on solving real-world issues and enriching lives.

He advised youth to follow their passions, embrace discomfort, and learn from those who challenge their abilities.
</excerpt>

In a one-off and intimate interview, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai spoke of his humble beginnings in India and how his experiences shaped his values and leadership up to this present moment. In a chat with Lex Fridman on the Lex Fridman Podcast, Pichai shared personal anecdotes about growing up in Chennai, previously known as Madras, and how the hardships he faced as a child fostered his passion for technology.

Life Without Basic Amenities

Pichai remembered growing up in an era when even the most basic services came in short supply or were simply non-existent. “We didn’t have running water. You know, it was a huge drought. So they would bring water in these trucks, perhaps eight buckets to a house. So my brother and I, sometimes my mom, we would stand in line, get that,” he said, reciting the daily routines of years of acute shortage.

Communication was also a luxury. His family took years to get a landline connection. “There was a five-year waiting list. And we got a rotary telephone. But it dramatically changed our lives,” he said. “You know, people would come to our house to make calls to their loved ones.”

Power to Transform

These experiences made a lasting impression on a young Pichai. Long, exhausting errands were the rule, particularly in seeking healthcare. “I would have to travel all the way to the hospital to pick up blood test results, and it would take two hours to get there. And they would say, Sorry, it’s not ready; come back tomorrow. Two hours to return.”. That used to be a five-minute thing,” he explained, pointing out how digital means have since transformed such processes.

Looking back at those times, Pichai said, “As a kid, even this light bulb went in my head, this power of technology to kind of change people’s lives.”

Pichai’s Advice to the Next Generation

When asked what advice he would give young people who want to have a global impact, Pichai stressed having to work in something that they actually are excited about. “You get a lot of luck along the way, but obviously you have to make good decisions,” he said. “Your brain is advising you something. But when you actually do things, I think it is a good idea to listen to your heart and consider whether you actually like doing it.”

He feels that passion is what allows a person to perform at his or her best. “If you love what you’re doing, it’s so much easier, and you’re going to see the best version of yourself,” he explained, acknowledging that finding out what one loves may be an arduous process.

Role of Mentorship and Growth

Pichai also talked about the need to constantly learn and to seek mentorship. “At different times in my life, I’ve worked with individuals who I felt were superior to me. You’re literally sitting in a room talking with someone, and they’re like…wow,” he said.

He encouraged future professionals to venture out of their comfort zones. “Situating yourself in situations that are uncomfortable, working with individuals who challenge your skills that’s what makes you grow,” he stated. “You’ll often surprise yourself.”

Through his personal stories, Sundar Pichai’s message was clear: perseverance, curiosity, and a genuine passion for innovation can take one a long way even from a house with no running water to the helm of one of the world’s most powerful tech companies.

</excerpt>

Google CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly called US President-Elect Donald Trump to congratulate him on his victory, but what caught attention was Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk joining the conversation.

Musk’s Growing Influence

Elon Musk, often seen alongside Trump recently, reportedly listened in on the call, according to The Information. Musk has become a constant presence at Trump’s Florida home and has been actively participating in key discussions. From joining calls with global leaders to advising on personnel choices, Musk’s influence is expanding.

Musk’s Role as “First Buddy”

</excerpt>

Former U.S. President Donald Trump took aim at Google, accusing the search engine of being “rigged.” In an interview with Bloomberg’s editor-in-chief John Micklethwait, Trump revealed he had recently called Google CEO Sundar Pichai to complain about only negative stories about him appearing in search results, despite having positive coverage as well.

“I called the head of Google the other day and said, ‘I’m getting a lot of good stories lately, but you don’t see them on Google,'” Trump shared. According to him, Pichai responded, saying Trump was “the No. 1 person on all of Google for stories.”

When asked if Google should be broken up, Trump said, “Yeah, look, Google’s got a lot of power. They’re very bad to me… you only see the 20 bad stories. I think it’s a whole rigged deal. Google’s rigged, just like our government is rigged.”

Trump, while not a fan of the company, warned against destroying Google, stating, “What you can do, without breaking it up, is make sure it’s more fair. They do treat me very badly, but we want great companies like this, not China.”

He also credited Google’s power but expressed concerns, adding, “Right now, China is afraid of Google.”

On TikTok, Trump remarked, “I think everything is a threat… Sometimes you have to fight through the threats.” Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Justice is considering breaking up Google after an August ruling declared the company acted as a monopoly in its search business.

In an impressive demonstration, SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, successfully caught the returning booster of its Starship rocket using mechanical arms located at its launch pad.

Elon Musk shared footage of the booster’s capture on his social media platform, X. “The tower has caught the rocket,” Musk wrote, referring to the booster’s return to the launch pad just seven minutes after it had initially launched.

The launch pad’s giant mechanical arms, known as “chopsticks,” caught the descending 232-foot (71-meter) stainless steel booster, gripping it securely and suspending it high above the ground.

This achievement marks the first time SpaceX has retrieved a rocket booster directly on its launch pad, as opposed to landing it on floating ocean platforms. The milestone drew praise from millions of people, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

In response to Musk’s video, Sundar Pichai commented, “Huge congrats, have to admit, rewatched the video many times over, incredible to see!”

He then moved to the US, earning an MS in materials science and engineering from Stanford University. Pichai joined Google in 2004 and was appointed CEO in 2015.

Here’s a look at Pichai’s journey from Madurai to leading Google over the years:

From IIT Kharagpur to University of Pennsylvania

Pichai was born into a Tamil Brahmin family. His mother, Lakshmi, was a stenographer, and his father, Regunatha Pichai, was an electrical engineer at the British conglomerate GEC. He studied metallurgical engineering at IIT-Kharagpur, where he won a silver medal and was awarded a scholarship to study at Stanford University.

He relocated to the US and earned an MS in engineering and materials science from Stanford University. After briefly working for Applied Materials, he completed his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 2002.

Sundar Pichai worked at McKinsey before working for Google

Pichai joined Google in 2004 after a brief stint at the consulting firm McKinsey. At Google, he started as head of product management and development. Some of his early projects included the Google Toolbar and the development of the Chrome browser.

In 2008, he was named vice president of product development and was promoted to senior vice president by 2012. Two years later, he was appointed as product chief for Google and the Android smartphone operating system.

Sundar Pichai appointed as Google CEO in 2015

When Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin created Alphabet Inc. in 2015, Pichai was appointed CEO of Google, which was reorganized as a subsidiary. Four years later, he was named CEO of Alphabet after Page stepped down.

Sundar Pichai is a self-proclaimed cricket fan. He has repeatedly expressed his love for the sport. Recently, he shared his excitement over the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, he said he was excited “to see my favorite sport growing globally,” and wished good luck to all the participating teams.

In a recent interview, Pichai mentioned his favorite dishes from three major Indian cities: in Bangalore, he enjoys Dosa; in Delhi, he prefers Chole Bhature; and in Mumbai, he likes Pav Bhaji.

Discussing how applicants for top tech companies like Facebook (Meta), Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Google (collectively known as FAANG) can move beyond the competitive exam mindset, Pichai stressed that “real success comes from understanding things in a deeper way.” He referenced a scene from “3 Idiots” where Aamir Khan’s character distinguishes between merely describing a motor and truly understanding its workings.

“There’s a scene where they ask Aamir Khan the definition of a motor. There’s one way to just describe what a motor is, and another way to actually understand what a motor is,” Pichai explained, urging aspirants to cultivate a deeper grasp of concepts rather than superficial knowledge.

In his first LinkedIn post, Pichai shared a glimpse of the Shoreline Amphitheatre stage where the keynote for Google I/O is being finalized, expressing anticipation for the event where developers worldwide will gather to explore the future of AI experiences.

Scheduled for tomorrow, the Google I/O keynote is set to commence at 10 a.m. PT (10:30 p.m. IST). The event promises insights into Google’s ongoing mission to organize and make information universally accessible. One of the focal points is expected to be Gemini, Google’s generative AI platform, as the company faces competition from rivals like OpenAI and Microsoft in the AI space.

Gemini’s advancements and potential integrations with flagship services such as Maps, Chrome, and Android are areas of interest. Additionally, a closer look at Android 15, Google’s latest mobile OS iteration with possible ties to Gemini, is anticipated. According to sources in google, Sundar Pichai, the CEO of the the company, may have to deal with the fallout as calls for his replacement at the top rise.

Due to incredibly erroneous images being produced by the AI tool, Google recently paused its Gemini image generator, despite having made significant investments in AI. Following the service’s termination, the large IT company’s stock also plummeted.

According to a Business Insider article, the board is thinking of replacing Sundar Pichai the Gemini error and the damage done to the stock price and the company’s reputation.

In a recent blog article, analyst and author of Stratechery Ben Thompson stated that in order for Google to survive, it must undergo a total makeover, which entails “removing those who let the former run amok, up to and including CEO Sundar Pichai.”

Additionally, Mark Shmulik, an internet analyst at Bernstein, proposed that Google’s top management needs a shock to recover from the recent run of disasters, particularly Gemini.

In a research note released this week, he stated, “The most recent saga only further raises increasingly louder questions around whether this is the right management team to guide Google into this next era.”
