</excerpt>

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) working committee on Friday formally accepted Sukhbir Singh Badal’s resignation as the party president, marking a significant development in the ongoing tensions between the party and the Akal Takht. The decision follows a strong stance taken by the Akal Takht Jathedar during a meeting with SAD leaders earlier this week, where he criticized the delay in implementing his directions for the party’s reorganization. SAD spokesperson Daljeet Singh Cheema announced the acceptance of the resignation after the committee’s meeting.

The SAD had previously contended that its status as a political party registered under the Constitution required it to maintain a secular framework, which they argued could conflict with following directives from the Akal Takht. However, the party eventually bowed to the pressure from the supreme temporal seat of Sikhism. Sukhbir Singh Badal had ceased active leadership of the SAD on August 30, 2022, transferring responsibilities to the working committee under Balwinder Singh Bhundar.

On November 16 of the same year, Badal formally resigned from the presidency, reportedly ahead of facing religious reprimand from the Akal Takht. This development underscores the growing influence of the Akal Takht in guiding the SAD’s organizational decisions, further intertwining religious and political dynamics within the party.

</excerpt>

A shocking incident took place near the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Wednesday, as Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. The attack took place when Badal was on his duties as a sewadar. Badal was sitting in a wheelchair, but he was safe as the bullet fired at him hit a wall.

Immediately, individuals present at the scene subdued the assailant as identified to be Narain Singh Chaura. He happens to be a former Khalistani militant with a rather checkered past involved in such high-profile and contentious criminal activities.

Who is Narain Singh Chaura?

Narain Singh Chaura belongs to the Dera Baba Nanak area and has been a militant and an active Panthic leader. He was also the mastermind behind the notorious Burail jailbreak, helping Babbar Khalsa International terrorists, Jagtar Singh Hawara, and Paramjit Singh Bheora, escape custody by cutting off the jail’s electricity supply.

Details of the Incident

The event occurred when Chaura was facing Sukhbir Singh Badal and tried to fire at him. Just before that, a sewadar from the nearby vicinity tried to push Chaura’s hand upwards, resulting in the shot missing its mark. The eyewitnesses even sighted Chaura dressed in a white kurta-pajama loitering around Badal a day prior to the attack, which indicates some forethought.

Security Concerns Raised

This brazen attack heightened security concerns in the area, especially around high-profile leaders. Authorities are examining Chaura’s motive and how he was able to execute this attempted attack close to one of Punjab’s holiest places.

The escape of Sukhbir Singh Badal has relieved his supporters; however, the incident represents a reminder that the issue with keeping the area secure has still not been fully solved.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal and other party leaders started their religious retribution, or tankhah, at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Tuesday. This punishment has been pronounced by Sri Akal Takht Sahib as reparation for “errors” that occurred during the period when the SAD was at the helm of affairs between 2007 and 2017.

A Symbolic Gesture of Atonement

Sukhbir Singh Badal was seen seated in a wheelchair at the temple’s gate with a spear in hand and a plaque around his neck admitting all the misdeeds his administration had done. He was asked to do seva as a sewadar, which includes washing dishes, cleaning shoes, and sitting through kirtan.

Clergy’s Verdict and Actions

On Monday, Sikh High Priest Giani Raghbir Singh, Jathedar of the Akal Takht, announced the religious instruction. Along with the sanction, he canceled the title of Fakhre-e-Qaum (Pride of the Community) given to ex-Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, who was Sukhbir’s late father.

In addition, the Sikh clergy asked the SAD working committee to accept Sukhbir Badal’s resignation as party chief and hold elections for fresh office-bearers within six months. Sukhbir had resigned in November, citing new leadership.

Before the edict was announced, Sukhbir Singh Badal publicly admitted to having made errors during his term. These included the unpopular decision to pardon Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a 2007 blasphemy case that had attracted mass criticism.

The punishment, which also includes SAD rebel leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, is also underlined by the Akal Takht’s stress on accountability in Sikh leadership. Both leaders have to perform specific acts of service for two days each, and Sukhdev Dhindsa has also come in a wheelchair as he is not fit to move due to old age health issues.

This directive, delivered nearly three months after Sukhbir Badal was declared tankhaiya (guilty of religious misconduct), is a very significant moment in Sikh political and religious history.

The protest was triggered by the cancellation of nominations for nearly 25 sarpanch aspirants aligned with SAD in the Gidderbaha Assembly segment.

Punjab Congress Committee (PCC) chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring also initiated a protest outside the SDM’s office in Gidderbaha over the rejection of nominations for Congress-backed candidates. Protesters blocked the road leading to the district administrative complex.

During his speech, Sukhbir Singh Badal issued a warning to local officials, demanding they reverse the cancellations or face a “gherao” of the SDM’s office on Thursday. He added that the SAD would file a petition in the high court and approach the Election Commission if needed. Sukhbir called on Akali workers to prepare for further protests.

Following the public address, Sukhbir and party activists met with Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Surinder Singh Dhillon. Prominent figures at the protest included former Muktsar MLA Kanwarjit Singh Rozy Barkandi, former Malout MLA Harpreet Singh, and SAD’s Muktsar district president Preetinder Singh Sammewali.
Sukhbir had paused his political activities after being declared “tankhaiya” (guilty of religious misconduct) by Akal Takht on August 30.

Simultaneously, PCC chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring’s protest led to the blockade of the Malout-Bathinda highway at Gidderbaha.

In a statement released today, NK Sharma said that Chandumajra started his political innings from Patiala and took the help of late Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra. He said that subsequently he started opposing Jathedar Tohra. He said that after demise of Jathedar Tohra he started opposing late Capt. Kanwaljit Singh. After his demise he started opposing former Minister Surjit Singh Rakhra. He said that in the recently held Parliamentary elections, Prof. Chandumajra did not support him as was expected and took workers from Sanour and Ghanour to Sri Anandpur Sahib, leading to the party’s defeat.

He said that it is an historic truth that since last 30 years Prof. Chandumajra is solely responsible for defeat of the party in Patiala.

He said that after Patiala. Prof. Chandumajra shifted his base to pious land of Sri Fateghgarh Sahib and ensured not only crushing defeat of Akali Dal but complete destruction of the party.

After this he took to Sri Anandpur Sahib and caused immense loss to party in Ropar, Mohali and surrounding districts.

He said that party gave Prof. Chandumajra and his family so much, but he was focussed only on himself and worked for his own welfare at the cost of the party.

He appealed to party President Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal that such leaders should not be inducted into the party again and instead party should encourage hard working young leaders who want to make their party strong by working at grass root level.

</excerpt>

The Akal Takht, the highest temporal authority for Sikhs, has summoned Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Monday. This follows a dissident faction’s allegations that Badal failed to adequately represent the Sikh community’s interests. The Akal Takht instructed Badal to appear before it within 15 days and submit a written explanation.

The statement from the Akal Takht jathedar indicated that senior SAD leaders had complained about Badal’s leadership. They claimed he had not effectively conveyed the sentiments of the Sikh Panth. Additionally, Badal was asked about Rs 90 lakh spent on advertisements from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s funds.

This directive emerged after a meeting of the five takhts’ jathedars in Amritsar. A faction of senior SAD leaders, led by Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Prem Singh Chandumajra and Bibi Jagir Kaur, had submitted an apology letter to Akal Takht jathedar Giani Raghubir Singh on July 1. They accused Badal of misrepresenting the Sikh community and called for his removal as the party president.

In response, SAD spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kler stated that Badal would comply with all decisions and orders issued by the Akal Takht, promising his appearance within the specified timeframe.

Following the defeat in parliamentary elections, the rebel faction sought forgiveness from the Akal Takht jathedar for their errors as SAD members. They blamed Badal for these mistakes, particularly for failing to apprehend those responsible for sacrilege incidents in 2014 during the SAD-BJP administration. The group also apologized for the party’s previous support of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, a stance later reversed by the Akal Takht after community backlash.

Gurpartap Singh Wadala, a member of the rebel faction, expressed approval of the Akal Takht’s decision. He emphasized that Badal was accountable not just to himself but to the entire Sikh community, which was seeking an apology.

As tensions escalated, security was heightened outside the SAD office in Chandigarh to prevent clashes between factions. The dissidents launched the ‘Shiromani Akali Dal Sudhar Lehar’ and appointed Wadala as its convener. They planned to establish a presidium and a committee of senior members to foster new leadership within the party.

Meanwhile, SAD leaders supportive of Badal gathered to express their solidarity. Daljit Singh Cheema, a senior party member, criticised the rebels and asserted that the party office, governed by the president’s guidelines, was not for those challenging Badal’s leadership. He emphasised that the party’s president is democratically elected, and internal dissent should not disrupt the party’s functioning.

</excerpt>

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal today said the erstwhile SAD government was instrumental in developing the Greater Mohali area which was set to eclipse Gurgaon besides creating world class education and research facilities and a thriving Information Technology sector.

The SAD president also appealed to the people to vote for the SAD to pave the way for expansion of the Greater Mohali area into a metropolis which would further augment employment and generate revenue for the State.

The SAD president made these comments during the ongoing Punjab Bachao Yatra which received a phenomenal response in both Kharar and Mohali assembly constituencies. Mr Sukhbir Badal, who was accompanied by the party’s Sri Anandpur Sahib candidate – Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra, interacted with people across both constituencies. Youth thronged to the Yatra in both constituencies and also mobbed the SAD president in Mohali where he was profusely garlanded and showered with flower petals at every stop.

Thanking the people for according massive welcome to the Punjab Bachao Yatra, Mr Sukhbir Badal said “this is also a reward for the party which has developed Mohali from a sleepy town into a bustling city which is growing by the day”. He said the SAD had not only planned the orderly and scientific expansion of Mohali and Kharar but had also created world class infrastructure and institutions.

Asserting that the international airport established in Mohali by the former SAD government had resulted in the speedy development of the city and resulted in an increase in commerce besides connectivity with the outside world, Mr Badal said “the IT sector has also taken ground in Mohali due to the airport”. He also disclosed how he had himself persuaded industry heads to establish the Indian School of Business in Mohali while adding that the previous SAD governments were behind the establishment of the world famous IISER and the Institute of Nano Science and Technology in Mohali. He also disclosed how he had personally visited heads of IT companies in Bangalore and Hyderabad and urged them to establish facilities in Mohali.

Industry association members and even residence welfare associations also met the SAD president and disclosed that all infrastructure development had come to a close in Kharar and Mohali since the last seven years during the previous Congress and present AAP government tenure. People said forget infrastructure development; even infrastructure which had been built during the SAD tenure was not being maintained. They also complained that in Kharar the municipal council was deliberately being starved of funds while Mohali city was being completely ignored by the AAP government.

Incharges for both constituencies Ranjit Singh Gill and Parvinder Singh Sohana, along with other leaders including Kamaljit Singh Ruby, Harjeet Singh Bhullar, Ajaypal Singh Middukhera and Paramjit Singh Kahlon also accompanied the SAD president during his Yatra in Kharar and Mohali.

Earlier in the day, he warmly welcomed former Punjab Pradesh Congress president and former Member of Parliament Mohinder Singh Kaypee into the Shiromani Akali Dal.

“Kaypee ji, who is also a three-time MLA, is known as an upright man who has made an immense contribution to civil society as well as the Dalit Samaj. The Akali Dal will be strengthened in the entire Doaba region. I’m sure he will be a worthy candidate for the Jalandhar (reserved) seat,” he said.

Meanwhile, lashing out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, “PM should never have made statements that spread communal hatred, mutual suspicion and venom among people of our own country. India belongs equally to Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, Christians and others.”

He further slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party, saying, “The PM and BJP must learn from Sardar Parkash Singh Badal how to ensure peace and communal harmony. Badal sahib used to personally honour and celebrate religious events and occasions of every community. This country belongs to all of us. Everyone must respect this fact.”

Sukhbir Singh Badal, the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, severely denounced the sacrilege incident at the Gurdwara Sahib in the Punjabi town of Mansoorpur on Monday and added that this cruel deed is unforgivable.

“Strongly condemn the heinous act of #sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji at Gurdwara Singh Sabha in village Mansurpur. I urge CM @bhagwantmann to direct @DGPPunjabPolice for taking immediate and stringent action against the culprits. This painful act is unpardonable,” Badal tweeted.

Earlier on Monday, Jalandhar Rural police said an accused in a sacrilege incident at Gurdwara Sahib in Mansoorpur village in Punjab has been arrested.
“Today (5/12/2022), the accused related to the sacrilege incident at the Gurdwara Sahib of village Mansoorpur, PS Goraya District Jalandhar (Rural) has been arrested. The case has been registered and Investigation is ongoing, the situation is under control,” Jalandhar Rural police said in a tweet.

In a tweet on the incident, BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa referred to the circumstances as “worrisome” and criticised the state’s Aam Aadmi Party administration for “deliberately sending signals to anti-social elements to engage in communal crimes and undermine peace.”

Additionally, he shared a video that allegedly included images of the gurdwara where the incident occurred.

“Deeply pained to see sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in Vill Mansurpur near Goraya. A man spat tobacco after chewing it on the seat. @AAPPunjab is deliberately giving signals to anti-social elements to indulge in communal acts & destroy peace. Worrisome situation in Punjab!”, tweeted Manjinder Singh Sirsa.

CHANDIGARH: BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh on Wednesday said that SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal was spreading poison and igniting communal passions in Punjab.

Reacting to Badal’s statement that the BJP had become a “tukde tukde” gang, Chugh said the way Sukhbir, after parting ways with the NDA, was trying to create a divisive and disruptive narrative was strongly reprehensible. “All Punjabis should wake up to the nefarious designs of Sukhbir Badal and his party,” he said. Chugh said the BJP had always stood for Hindu-Sikh unity in Punjab and had tried to foster the brotherhood whenever there were strains of stress.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken special care to address the Sikh issues, be it providing succour to the 1984 riot victims, or opening of the Kartarpur Corridor, or lifting a ban on foreign donations made to the Golden Temple, and many more like that, Chugh added.

He said that even during the times of militancy in Punjab, the BJP made sure that the Hindu-Sikh relations did not suffer and the spirit of Punjabiyat was kept alive. On farmers’ front, he said the BJP was committed to doing everything for their welfare. The three farm laws are meant to double their income by 2022, he added.

CHANDIGARH: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal has appealed to the party rank and file to actively assist the families of farmers engaged in the ongoing agitation at the Delhi border by helping them in their agricultural operations as well as aid in looking after their animals.

Badal made this appeal after a meeting of the senior leadership during which it was pointed out that the wheat crop was due for irrigation as well as application of fertiliser. Accordingly, the SAD chief requested the entire rank and file of the party to assist farmers who were unable to tend to their fields because of the ongoing protest.

Meanwhile, the SAD on Wednesday said that the Centre should handle administrative matters and resolve the deadlock with farmers to their satisfaction instead of depending on pleas to lift the congregation of peaceful farmers from the borders of Delhi.

In a statement, party spokesperson and former Punjab Minister Daljit Singh Cheema said that such pleas only highlighted the failure of the NDA government which was trying to use the Supreme Court to lift a peaceful and democratic protest.

He said that instead of this the government could have arrived at a solution in Parliament by discussing the issue threadbare and repealing the three agricultural Acts. The SAD leader said that it was unfortunate that the Central government had run away from discussing the issue in Parliament by scrapping the winter session altogether.

</excerpt>

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Tuesday said that BJP is the real ‘tukde tukde gang’ in the country. “It has been splitting the country into pieces by setting one community against another. So desperate is it for power and has no scruples about taking the communal polarisation route and setting the country on communal flames,” he said.

Talking to media persons at Bathinda, Badal said, “BJP first set the Hindus against the Muslims. Now, it is determined to replay that evil game and re-enact the same tragedy in Punjab also. It is conspiring to set our peace-loving Hindu brethren in Punjab against their Sikh brethren with whom they have shared strong bonds of blood for centuries. The BJP wants to replace those bonds of blood with bloodshed.”

“The BJP has been resorting to dangerous conspiracies to sabotage the hard-earned atmosphere of peace and communal harmony just for the realisation of petty political goals. The BJP leadership must realise that their party today has become the most powerful divisive force. It has been resorting to dividing the country and its people by spreading hatred in the name of religion,” Badal added.

Referring to the ongoing farmers’ movement, Badal said that the whole country except that BJP gratefully acknowledges the debt which we owe to our patriotic farmers and soldiers. “The BJP is provoking the people to deny that debt. It believes only in emotionally exploiting the farmers’ sacrifices but remains so ungrateful to them that it is painting them as anti-national. Today it is the farmers. Nobody knows what the BJP might say even about soldiers tomorrow if it suits that party. The farmers are hurt and angry against the BJP and not against the government,” SAD president said.

Later, in a statement issued from the party HQ in Chandigarh, Badal said, “SAD deems it its national duty to caution the countrymen against BJP’s desperate and destructive game-plan in Punjab. This party is desperate for power that it has no qualms about making Punjabis thirst for one another’s blood and destroy the fabric of unity and fraternal love which has been bequeathed to us by the great Guru Sahiban and by great saints and seers.”

Badal said, “It is shocking and unbelievable that a party which claims to take pride in India’s heritage is determined to destroy the foundations of that very heritage. This is the heritage that has shown the path of peace, communal harmony and human brotherhood in the entire world. But the BJP is hell-bent upon playing havoc with this heritage and destroying the hard earned atmosphere of peace and communal harmony.”
