</excerpt>

Sudha Murty, author and Rajya Sabha MP, expressed admiration for her son-in-law, Rishi Sunak, calling him a “British citizen with good Indian cultural values.”

Murty joined Sunak and her daughter, Akshata Murty, as guest of honor at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s annual Diwali gala in London. She praised Sunak’s upbringing, highlighting how his mother, Usha Sunak, provided him with a strong cultural foundation, making him both a proud British citizen and someone rooted in Indian cultural values.

“I want to congratulate Ushaji, my sambandhi and a good friend of mine, who gave her son Rishi Sunak, former prime minister, a great route to identify with the culture, making him a proud British citizen as well as [having] good Indian cultural values,” she remarked.

The event also saw Sunak’s parents, Usha and Yashvir Sunak, in attendance as students performed Indian classical music and dance.

In her keynote address, Murty emphasized the importance of good education and cultural grounding. “I always believe when you are abroad, your parents must do two things: one is good education, which gives you wings in return and you can fly anywhere and settle; the second is great culture, your origin which is Indian origin or roots which you can get at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan along with your parents,” she said.

Murty encouraged the British Indian community to support Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan UK, urging them to send their children there to experience Indian culture. “When you grow old you go towards your roots… that gap is addressed by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, so you have to help them in every way to survive,” she added.

The Diwali gala featured Vedic chants and celebrated Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s achievements in Indian arts, music, dance, Yoga, and languages. Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty presented mementoes to the team behind the center’s work, while students showcased Kuchipudi, Kathak, and Bharatanatyam performances and appealed for donations to enhance their programs.

At 78, Murthy demonstrated his enduring affection for Sudha Murty, his wife of 46 years. The tech mogul’s unexpected serenade captivated the summit audience, and the video soon garnered hundreds of thousands of views. Fans flooded the post with comments such as “Pookie mode on” and “He has good taste in music,” expressing admiration for Murthy’s romantic gesture and musical taste.

Narayana and Sudha Murty’s Love Story

This tender moment comes on the heels of the couple’s appearance on The Kapil Sharma Show, where they shared stories about their long and eventful marriage. Murthy recalled how he was drawn to Sudha for her kindness and optimism. He described her as “a breath of fresh air,” while Sudha reminisced about their first meeting with her father, which was delayed due to a broken-down taxi. During that meeting, Murthy revealed his aspirations of opening an orphanage and possibly entering politics, which did not immediately impress her father.

Despite their differing personalities—Murthy’s reserved nature and Sudha’s outgoing demeanor—the couple has found common ground throughout their marriage. Sudha humorously explained, “This is where we have a difference of opinion. We are opposites, but opposites attract, so we find a compromise zone.”

Social Media Reactions

Murthy’s public display of affection quickly sparked widespread appreciation on social media. Many praised the business leader for expressing his emotions so openly, with one user commenting, “Who says romance is dead?” Another remarked, “It’s refreshing to see a powerful figure like Murthy openly showing his love.” The viral video has not only highlighted Murthy’s romantic side but also deepened public admiration for his enduring relationship with Sudha.

Narayana Murthy shared a humorous anecdote, confessing that he forgot his and Sudha’s 25th wedding anniversary, despite her subtle reminders. He recalled, “One day, I woke up in the morning, and Sudha asked me if there was anything special today. And I said no…nothing.” Heading to the office, she asked him to “think of anything special today,” yet he didn’t catch on.

Murthy recounted that later that evening, he was en route to Mumbai when he received a call from his daughter, Akshata, who was studying at Stanford in the US. She firmly advised, “‘Cancel the flight right now, and take the first flight out tomorrow morning at 6 and come back to Bangalore and wish my mother and your wife a happy anniversary day.'”

Sudha Murty commented on the incident, saying, “For five-ten minutes I felt bad because I’m also human.” She joked about her cooking skills too, admitting, “Main itna kharab khana banati hu nah. Murthy saab ka weight dekhiye. Kyun aisa hai? (I cook so much worse. Look at Murthy’s weight. Why is it like this?) Thanks to my cooking.”

He rose to fame in 2023 when his review of Cadbury’s Bournvita’s sugar content went viral, leading the company to reduce sugar in their product. Recently, Himatsingka described an important milestone in his career: being contacted by Sudha Murty for his expertise on food adulteration research.

In a video, he shares, “My biggest honour in my journey as Food Pharmer is when Sudha Murty ma’am contacted me to provide research on food adulteration for Rajya Sabha.” The video also includes a clip of Murty speaking during the monsoon session of Parliament, where she highlights food-related health concerns. “What kind of food we eat and what kind of disease we get, we should think in the modern era,” Murty states, emphasizing three ingredients common in the hotel industry: synthetic color, synthetic vinegar, and tasting powder. She warns, “Because they look nice, it is tasty, but people are not aware that it will become a problem in the future.”

He was a simple man… I learned philanthropy in the House of Tatas only. It’s my personal loss… I feel now vacuumed in my personal life.”

Eighty-six-year-old Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of Tata Sons and a noted philanthropist, passed away on October 9 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. Reports indicate that he was admitted in critical condition.

In a statement, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran expressed, “It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation.”

Earlier that day, President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid their respects to Tata. The President remarked that the country “lost an icon who blended corporate growth with nation-building, and excellence with ethics.” She extended condolences to Tata’s family and the entire Tata Group, highlighting that his contributions to philanthropy and charity were “invaluable.”

Prime Minister Modi also conveyed his condolences, referring to Tata as “a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul, and an extraordinary human being.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that Tata’s last rites would be conducted with full state honors. </excerpt>

Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty recently shared her perspective on Raksha Bandhan, a significant festival for her, in a video posted on social media platform X. She highlighted the festival’s importance, describing it as a time when a sister ties a rakhi (a protective thread) and asks for support and protection from her brother in times of need.

https://twitter.com/SmtSudhaMurty/status/1825374632331141397

Murty recounted a story associated with Raksha Bandhan, where Rani Karnavati of Mewar, facing a threat from attackers, sent a rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun, asking for his protection. According to her narrative, Humayun, unfamiliar with the custom, agreed to help but unfortunately arrived too late to save Karnavati.

The story sparked debate on social media, with some users asserting that Raksha Bandhan’s origins trace back to the Mahabharata. They referenced the tale of Draupadi and Lord Krishna, where Draupadi tied a piece of cloth around Krishna’s wounded finger, leading him to vow protection for her. This narrative is often cited as a traditional origin story for the festival.

With absolute respect Madam, the origin of Rakshabandan dates back to the Mahabharata times.

Lord Krishna once accidentally cut his find on the Sudarshan Chakra. Seeing him injured, Draupadi tore a piece of cloth from her saree and tied it to stop the bleeding. Touched by her…

In response to the criticism, Murty issued a clarification, emphasizing that her intention was to highlight one of many stories associated with Raksha Bandhan rather than to present it as the definitive origin. She acknowledged that the festival has various historical and cultural stories, including those from the Mahabharata and other ancient traditions.

The story I shared on Raksha Bandhan is just one of many tales associated with the festival and certainly not its origin. As I have said in the video clip, this was already a custom of the land. My intention was to highlight one of the many stories I learnt about when growing up,…

The Rajya Sabha MP, philanthropist, and wife of Infosys billionaire Narayana Murthy posted three books she plans to read this month. Her selection spans various genres and subjects, ranging from a fictional narrative about a woman inheriting a Rajwada in Mahabaleshwar to a factual account of one of the largest financial frauds of the 21st century.

Here’s a glimpse of Sudha Murty’s July reading list:

“In The Shadow Of Inheritance” by Manjiri Prabhu, dubbed as a “haunting love story” by publisher Penguin, follows Tara who inherits the Khanolkar Rajwada in Mahabaleshwar and unravels dark secrets, including her father’s murder.

Sudha Murty offers a contrasting view of the book: “The story centers on Sonia Rai inheriting a Bavarian estate, where she discovers family secrets and hidden dangers.”

“And Pine For What is Not” by Sunita Deshpande is a memoir capturing the life of the Indian writer, tracing her journey from student revolutionary to stage performer, writer, and educational administrator. The memoir explores themes of relationships, unfulfilled desires, and identity through interconnected stories.

“Billion Dollar Whale” by Tom Wright and Bradley Hope narrates the true tale of Jho Low, a Malaysian businessman and fugitive accused of embezzling US$4.5 billion from 1MDB. Sudha Murty describes the book as detailing Low’s orchestration of one of the largest financial frauds in history, exposing a global corruption network involving Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund.

</excerpt>

Renowned philanthropist and author Sudha Murty made a compelling debut in the Rajya Sabha, advocating for two critical issues that resonate deeply with India’s future.

Addressing the House on July 2, 2024, Murty passionately called for a government-led initiative to provide cervical cancer vaccinations for girls aged 9-14. Emphasizing the preventive benefits, she highlighted, “There is a vaccination which is given to girls, between the age of 9 to 14, known as a cervical vaccination. If the girls take that, it (cancer) can be avoided… we should promote vaccination for the benefit of our girls because prevention is better than cure.”

Murty, who was nominated to the Rajya Sabha on the eve of International Women’s Day, also championed the cause of domestic tourism. She proposed that 57 domestic tourist sites in India, including iconic landmarks like the Bahubali statue in Karnataka and the Shivaji forts in Maharashtra, be recognized as World Heritage Sites. “In India, we have 42 World Heritage sites but 57 are pending… we should bother about those 57 sites,” Murty asserted passionately.

Drawing attention to the architectural marvels and historical significance of these sites, Murty underscored the need for their preservation and global recognition. She noted the cultural richness embodied in places like the Srirangam temples and the ancient monuments of Sarnath, urging concerted efforts for their inclusion as World Heritage Sites.

Murty’s address also touched upon the legacy of Indian craftsmanship, noting the architectural inspiration drawn from sites like the Chausath Yogini temple in Mitawali, Madhya Pradesh, which influenced the design of the old Parliament Building. Her impassioned plea for the preservation and promotion of India’s cultural and historical treasures resonated strongly in the parliamentary session.

In conclusion, Sudha Murty’s maiden speech in the Rajya Sabha was not just a call to action but a poignant reminder of India’s rich cultural heritage and the imperative to safeguard its future through proactive health initiatives and preservation efforts in tourism.

Reflecting on this incident during a recorded conversation on X, Murty recounted, “One day, I received a call informing me that Abdul Kalam wanted to speak with me. Assuming it was a mix-up because I didn’t know Abdul Kalam personally, I suggested it might be intended for Narayana Murthy.”

“To my surprise, the operator insisted, ‘No, he specifically asked for Mrs. Murty,'” she quoted.

Curious about why Abdul Kalam had called her, Murty later learned that he had appreciated her column addressing the IT divide. She recalled how Abdul Kalam praised her writing, mentioning he regularly read her columns whenever they were published.

In one of her columns, Murty had recounted a telling incident where she purchased fruits priced at ₹100, only to discover that the shopkeeper charged ₹200 for the same fruits when bought by one of her students working at Infosys. The shopkeeper explained the price difference, citing the student’s profession.

Recognized for her outstanding social contributions, Sudha Murty received the Padma Shri in 2006 from President APJ Abdul Kalam and was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2023 by President Droupadi Murmu for her continued dedication to social work.
