Full Details You Need To Know | WATCH

<excerpt>Hours after India and Pakistan announced a ceasefire, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed drone sightings and explosions, triggering alarm and exposing fresh ceasefire violations. Omar Abdullah and officials expressed serious concern.
</excerpt>

In a dramatic turn of events, the ceasefire announced between India and Pakistan on Saturday evening fell apart within hours as explosions and drone sightings were reported across Jammu and Kashmir.

The truce, declared following four days of intense military escalation, cross-border drone strikes, and missile attacks, was expected to take effect from 5:00 pm IST. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated earlier in the day, “It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time today,” referring to a call between the DGMOs of both nations.

Violations Begin Hours Later

However, barely hours into the ceasefire, security forces in Srinagar and Jammu responded to a fresh wave of drone incursions. Drone sightings were followed by explosions, prompting India’s air defence units to engage aggressively.

Citizens of Srinagar heard multiple loud blasts after dusk, particularly near the Batwara area—home to key Army installations. “This is no ceasefire. The air defence units in the middle of Srinagar just opened up,” former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah posted on X. In another post, he added, “What the hell just happened to the ceasefire? Explosions heard across Srinagar!!”

WATCH THE VIDEO:

This is no ceasefire. The air defence units in the middle of Srinagar just opened up. pic.twitter.com/HjRh2V3iNW

— Omar Abdullah (@OmarAbdullah) May 10, 2025

According to officials, drones were intercepted in several districts, including Baramulla, Anantnag, Verinag, Safapora, and Bandipora. In Jammu and Udhampur, air raid sirens blared, followed by multiple explosions and temporary blackouts in certain areas.

Cross-Border Shelling and Gunfire

In addition to drone threats, Pakistani troops engaged in mortar shelling and small arms fire from the International Border and LoC areas including RS Pura, Akhnoor, and Rajouri’s Nowshera sector. A drone was reportedly shot down in the Anantnag high ground, close to another Army location.

Emergency Alert for Civilians

As tensions escalated, the Amritsar Deputy Commissioner issued emergency safety guidelines for citizens, urging people to remain indoors, turn off lights, and stay away from windows, balconies, and rooftops. Emergency contact numbers were also shared for assistance. “By way of abundant caution, please remain indoors with lights off and move away from windows. Please do not move out on the road, balcony or terrace. Don’t panic,” read the public advisory.

India’s Response and Misri’s Statement

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri condemned the breach in a late-night press briefing. “For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding (which was) arrived at earlier this evening,” he said. He added that the armed forces have been granted a “free hand” to respond to any further provocations along both the LoC and International Border.

Pakistan Accuses India, Faces Criticism

In contrast, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry issued a statement late Saturday, falsely accusing India of breaking the ceasefire and claimed its forces were “told to act with restraint.” Analysts see this as a sign of the widening rift between Pakistan’s civilian government and its military establishment.

Tensions have escalated rapidly since India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Since then, Pakistan has allegedly tried to hit back by targeting both military and civilian areas along India’s northern and western borders.

</excerpt>

The intelligence agency (IB) and others put local security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir on alert for the risk of an attack on tourists, but during the Prime Minister’s planned visit to the union territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir on April 19, and in Srinagar, said individuals privy to the development.

HT reports that in retaliation, security was increased in and around Srinagar, including close to some hotels used by tourists, and also around tourist spots like the Dachigam National Park, 22 km from the city.

Attack in Pahalgam After PM’s Visit Cancelled

But the PM Narendra Modi’s visit was cancelled on account of bad weather, and when the terrorists struck, killing 26 people, all men, including 25 tourists, 24 of whom were Hindus in a targeted attack, it was in Pahalgam, 90 km away from Srinagar, and on April 22.

“Nine out of ten times they don’t come to anything but this one proved correct about tourists. The interpretation, which is the trickiest part, got the location wrong,’’ said a senior police officer, confirming that both Army and civilian security officials in Jammu and Kashmir were told to prepare for an attack around the Prime Minister’s visit, at a tourist location near Srinagar.

Weather Forecast Prompted Cancellation of Visit

Four days prior to the PM’s visit, noticing the meteorogical departhment’s forecast of poor weather around April 18-19, the Prime Minister’s Office called off the visit. The PM would have had to travel by chopper to approximately three sectors and poor weather would have ruined all his plans. Even after calling it off, security officials didn’t let their guard and preparedness down.

Security Monitoring Continued Despite Cancellation

Director general of police Nalin Prabhat remained posted in Srinagar for four days, monitoring all spots surrounding Srinagar. On April 22, when the terrorists attacked, Prabhat had arrived in Jammu and had to immediately return. Prabhat remained silent on a request for comment.

Indeed, all officials interviewed confirmed that there was no reference to Pahalgam in any of the intelligence inputs received by them.

Terrorists May Have Reacted to Visit Cancellation

With hindsight, they further explained that now it is evident that once the PM’s visit had been cancelled, the terrorists went into hiding and were waiting for the next moment. They didn’t wait long. Just a day after the cancellation, the visit of US vice president JD Vance which has been understood to be in the pipeline for some time was announced in a statement on April 16.

Failure to Predict Attack in Baisaran

The lapse, officials point out, was the inability to anticipate an attack in Baisaran, which is open throughout the year and only closed during the Amarnath Yatra. “The two local men among the terrorists were the ones who corralled the tourists to one side,’’ one of the officials said. “The shots were fired by the two foreign men. Because there was only one entry and exit controlled by the tickets, that made it difficult for the tourists to escape the attackers.”

As it is now clear that the terrorists were residing there and are still present in the vicinity, the largest blunder was of the local intelligence, the officials added.

</excerpt>

The Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives—the majority of whom were tourists—has shaken Jammu and Kashmir to its roots. Protests have broken out all over the Valley, with irate locals and political parties calling for quick justice.

Even as the Indian Army ramps up its hunt for the four terrorists, the Valley has seen something not seen in decades—a civil society-called shutdown to condemn terrorism. PM Narendra Modi has shortened his Saudi Arabia visit, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah went to Srinagar to offer his condolences. With the increasing tension, Kashmir stands at a crucial juncture.

Protests Erupt Across Kashmir Valley

Locals protested in marches in towns such as Tangmarg, Ganderbal, Srinagar, Doda, and Kishtwar. All communities were against the killings. Their message was one—violence had to stop. Residents called for the terrorists to be acted against. Demonstrators waved placards and chanted slogans, showing their anger and sorrow.

#WATCH | #PahalgamTerroristAttack | Jammu, J&K | Dogra Front chief Ashok Gupta says, “… My Hindus have become so weak… They were killed one by one… We are not going to tolerate this anymore… Pakistan is broke, yet they are able to attack us… The time has come to crush… https://t.co/9CqvWLyJ2T pic.twitter.com/LoWeOCxIT7

Hindu organization members also came out on the streets. Dogra Front leader Ashok Gupta denounced his anger when he said, “Pakistan is bankrupt, but they continue to attack us. Now is the time to retaliate and support Balochistan.”

National Leadership Swings Into Action

PM Narendra Modi returned from Saudi Arabia a day ahead of time. He held meetings with NSA Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, and EAM S Jaishankar shortly after his arrival. The government has assured decisive action.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah took a trip to Srinagar, paid homage on the victims’ coffins, and took stock of security readiness.

Valley Observes Historic Shutdown

For the first time in 35 years, Kashmir saw a total shutdown to protest a terror attack. Bazaars, fuel pumps, and businesses in Srinagar and other districts were closed. Only essential services were open. Private schools were shut, but government schools were open. Public transport was thin, but private cars moved around.

This period may be a new phase. Shutdowns in Kashmir for decades were due to political or separatist appeals. But this bandh was from common folk, irrespective of religious or political affiliations.

Their common refrain was: Kashmiris abhor violence and want peace. This change may well herald the emergence of civil-led resistance against terrorism—a much-needed voice in the Valley’s dialogue process.

</excerpt>

Srinagar’s iconic Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden opened to the public on Wednesday, signaling the start of a new tourism season in Kashmir. Nestled between Dal Lake and the Zabarwan Hills, the garden is a major attraction for tourists visiting the region. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the event, inviting visitors to witness the vibrant blooms.

History and Development of the Garden

The tulip garden was established in 2007 by Ghulam Nabi Azad, the then Chief Minister, to extend the tourist season in the Kashmir valley, which was earlier limited to summer and winter. Originally known as Siraj Bagh, the garden began with 50,000 tulip bulbs imported from The Netherlands and has since grown in popularity and scale.

New Varieties and Expansions

This year, the Floriculture Department introduced two new tulip varieties, taking the total number of flower varieties to 74, including hyacinths, daffodils, muscari, and cyclamens. Around 17 lakh tulip bulbs have been planted over an expansive area of 55 hectares, making it Asia’s largest tulip garden.

Visitor Footfall and Popularity

The garden attracts both domestic and international tourists. Last year, over 4.65 lakh visitors explored the tulip blooms, a significant increase compared to 3.65 lakh visitors in 2023. The phased planting of tulip bulbs ensures that the flowers remain in bloom for over a month, extending the tourist season.

Future Prospects

With nearly full capacity reached, officials aim to maintain and enhance the garden’s charm, ensuring it continues to attract millions of visitors annually.

</excerpt>

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced on Sunday the cancellation of his scheduled programs in Jammu due to the ongoing severe cold wave conditions affecting the Kashmir valley. He will remain in Srinagar to oversee the operations of essential services, particularly in the power and water supply sectors.

Abdullah, who was returning from a trip to Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, stated that he would arrive in Srinagar by Friday morning to assess the situation in the valley. He acknowledged the difficulties residents are facing with water and electricity supply amid the harsh weather conditions.

“In light of the severe cold spell in the Kashmir valley and the resultant difficulties with water and electricity supply, I have decided to cancel my forthcoming programs in Jammu and station myself in Srinagar for the next week to personally monitor the functioning of the Power department and other important departments,” Abdullah posted on X while en route to Srinagar.

He expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to event organizers due to his cancellation but emphasized that it was necessary under the current circumstances. “I will make it up to the people and organizations whose programs have been affected,” he added.

In a related development, CM Abdullah clarified that the proposed Goods and Services Tax (GST) hike on Kashmiri shawls was not discussed during the 55th meeting of the GST Council, which took place in Jaisalmer on Saturday and was chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

This news was welcomed by local artisans, as Abdullah assured reporters that any increase in GST on shawls, particularly Pashmina shawls, would have severely impacted the industry. “Thankfully, it wasn’t taken up, and we will also ensure that in the future, something like this is not considered because it would be life-threatening to our Pashmina shawl industry,” he stated.

The clarification came shortly after Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti urged CM Abdullah to address concerns regarding the proposed GST hike on Kashmiri shawls.

The raids targeted the residences of Obais Riyaz Dar of Bonpora Batamaloo and Sahil Ahmad Bhat of HMT, Zainakot. The operation followed allegations of their involvement in a criminal conspiracy to fabricate and spread malicious narratives, aimed at provoking unrest and inciting unlawful activities.

Searches were carried out after obtaining warrants from the NIA Court. Police stated that the materials seized are believed to have been used to disseminate false information and promote seditious propaganda in coordination with adversarial elements.

Authorities have cautioned citizens against sharing or uploading inciteful content on social media, urging them to avoid spreading false narratives that could mislead the public, particularly the youth, into unlawful acts. More searches targeting additional suspects involved in the case are expected in the coming days.

Police assured the public of their commitment to maintaining law and order and warned against any attempts to disrupt peace through malicious propaganda.

</excerpt>

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah strongly condemned the grenade attack near a Sunday market in Srinagar, injuring 11 civilians, including two women.

In a post on X, Abdullah expressed his distress over the recent surge in attacks across Jammu and Kashmir, saying, “The last few days have been dominated by headlines of attacks and encounters in parts of the Valley. Today’s news of a grenade attack on innocent shoppers at the Sunday market in Srinagar is deeply disturbing. There can be no justification for targeting innocent civilians.”
He urged the security forces to take all necessary measures to curb this rise in terror incidents and ensure the safety of residents.
CM Abdullah further said that the security apparatus must do everything possible to end this spurt of attacks.

“The security apparatus must do everything possible to end this spurt of attacks at the earliest so that people can go about their lives without any fear,” he added.
Following the incident, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Vidhi Kumar Birdi, also reached the Govt SHMS Hospital, where those injured in the attack were admitted.
“This kind of thing never happened here before. I don’t know what’s going on these past few days… Even during the peak of militancy, nothing like this ever happened,” a local resident said.

</excerpt>

At least 11 civilians were injured on Sunday when terrorists lobbed a grenade at a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bunker near a crowded flea market in the heart of Srinagar, officials said. The incident occurred near the heavily guarded Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) complex, which also houses the offices of All India Radio and Doordarshan Kendra.
According to police, the grenade attack targeted a CRPF bunker but missed its mark, landing on a nearby roadside instead. The blast caused chaos and panic as thousands of shoppers at the popular weekly ‘Sunday market’ scrambled for cover.

A senior police official indicated that the attack was likely a retaliatory move by terrorists following the recent elimination of a high-ranking Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander in Srinagar’s Khanyar area. “The desperation of the terrorists following Saturday’s encounter seems evident in today’s attack,” he stated.
As security forces intensify efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible, heightened security measures remain in place across Srinagar.

In a stern response to a grenade attack, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha pledged swift and decisive action against those responsible for targeting civilians. In a high-level security meeting, Sinha directed Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat and senior officials to pursue an uncompromising course to neutralize terrorists and their networks in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Terrorists targeting our citizens will pay a very heavy price for their actions,” asserted the Lieutenant Governor, adding that security agencies have “full freedom” to dismantle terror outfits. His message was resolute: those threatening peace will not find sanctuary in the Valley, and the response will be “forceful and effective” to bring them to justice.
The Lieutenant Governor extended his wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured, instructing district authorities to ensure comprehensive support and medical care for the victims. This response underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to protect its citizens and deter those intent on destabilizing the region.
The Jammu and Kashmir Congress also expressed alarm over the incident. “This ghastly attack on shopkeepers is shocking,” said Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra in a statement. “The police must implement effective measures to prevent such brutal attacks so the public can move freely and safely.”

</excerpt>

AIP Supremo MP North Kashmir Er. Rashid has levied serious allegations on National conference, in a press conference which was held in srinagar today Er. Rashid said that BJP, Home Minister, Prime Minister had already promised about giving statehood to J&K. So what new is Omar Abdullah doing?

Engineer in a press conference told that since yesterday we are seeing in the media about Omar Abdullah’s cabinet meeting where they have decided to restore statehood via a resolution.

Omar Abdullah had fought this elections based on restoration of statehood but it seems Omar has changed his goal post from 370 to statehood. His grandfather Sheikh Abdullah has done the same in 1953.

Rashid also said that Omar Abdullah changed 3 dresses on the day of oath ceremony. Though it’s his personal choice but there is nothing to celebrate. “Maatam ka waqt hai” there is nothing to celebrate. Omar seems happy that he has got CM’s chair. Omar Abdullah is trying his best to please BJP and its leaders.

He said If BJP remains in power for next 100 years, do Kashmiris have to wait for 100 years for the restoration of article 370, There is something fishy.

Before abrogation, there was an uncertainty, we wanted to know what centre wanted for J&K. I approached Dr. Farooq, he clearly said, no one will go except for 3 National Conference MP’s but instead of Akbar Lone, Omar Abdullah went to attend the meeting. National Conference knew about the abrogation.

Now that elections are over, what was the Gupkaar alliance all about? I want to ask Sajjad Lone, M.Y. Tarigami, Mehbooba Mufti and others that was PAGD created by Modi and you all were supporting him he added

We want to tell Omar Abdullah to raise the issue of Darbar Move. It’s important to revive Darbar Move. Besides money, the integration between people from Jammu and Kashmir is important. That’s lacking presently

Vomedh, a non-profit organization recognized for its contributions to art, culture, and theatre in Jammu and Kashmir, has successfully organized three editions of the Jammu Film Festival (JFF) and two editions of the International Film Festival of Srinagar (TIFFS) in the past.

Abdullah’s swearing-in will take place at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar at 11:30 a.m.

In a letter addressed to Omar Abdullah, LG Sinha stated, “I have received a letter from Dr. Farooq Abdullah, President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, informing me that you have been unanimously elected as the Leader of the Legislature Party.” The letter also acknowledged support from several political leaders, including J&K Congress President Tariq Hameed Karra, CPI(M) Secretary G.N. Malik, AAP National Secretary Pankaj Kumar Gupta, and Independent MLAs Payare Lal Sharma, Satish Sharma, Ch. Mohd. Akram, Dr. Rameshwar Singh, and Muzafar Iqbal Khan.

With this support, LG Sinha extended his formal invitation, stating, “I am pleased to invite you to form and lead the Government of Jammu and Kashmir. I take this opportunity to wish you a highly productive tenure and success in your endeavors for the benefit of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”

Omar Abdullah confirmed the news on social media platform X, sharing that he had received the letter from the Principal Secretary to the LG. “I was pleased to receive the Principal Secretary to LG Manoj Sinha ji, who handed over the letter inviting me to form the next government in J&K,” Abdullah wrote.

The National Conference-Congress alliance emerged victorious in the recent Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, securing a majority to form the government. Omar Abdullah, elected as the leader of the alliance, will now lead the first government formed after the revocation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories on October 31, 2019.

This development ends nearly five years of central rule, which was imposed following the BJP’s withdrawal of support from the PDP-led government in June 2018.

</excerpt>

The Jammu and Kashmir Estates Department has issued an order requiring nine senior government officials to vacate their current ministerial bungalows in Srinagar. This move is in preparation for the anticipated formation of a new government in the region next month. The officials include high-ranking figures such as Dheeraj Gupta, IAS, Financial Commissioner of the Forest Department, and Alok Kumar, IRS, Principal Secretary for Higher Education, among others. These officers are expected to leave their accommodations promptly to make room for the incoming ministers.

This reshuffle comes at a crucial time, as Jammu and Kashmir is gearing up for significant political changes, likely influenced by the broader discussions around administrative restructuring in the region. The government has assured these officers of suitable alternative accommodations based on their seniority. This development highlights the logistical groundwork being laid for the next phase of governance in the region.

Over the years, Gandhi has given at least four or five different responses, ranging from “when the right girl comes along” to being “married to the party” and being “completely entangled in party work.”

The inevitable question was fielded during the recent conversation on topics covering politics, education, and employment.

Replying to a question about his impressions on marriage, the 54-year-old leader smiled and answered, “Now, that is pressure. 20-30 years I have outlasted that, but it’s a good thing really.”

When asked if he had any plans to get married, Gandhi said, “Yeah, yeah. I mean, I don’t plan it. But if it happens.”

Students then further demanded an invitation to his wedding, to which he promised, “I will. I will.”

The women of Kashmir have strength, resilience, wisdom and a whole lot to say.

But are we giving them a chance for their voices to be heard? pic.twitter.com/11Te8MM5fH

This isn’t the first time the topic has come up. Early this year, she had got him to respond on the same question from the crowds while he was speaking at a rally in Raebareli. He had humorously said, “Ab jaldi karni padegi (Will have to do it soon now).”

Last June, at an opposition function in Patna, Lalu Yadav had even advised Gandhi to get married, telling her, “Shaadi kariye, hum log baraati chalenge (Get married, we would like to be part of your wedding procession).” Gandhi had responded, “Now, with that said, it will happen.”

In yet another, from as far back as last October, a student from Jaipur’s Maharani College shot him the question: ‘Why did you never think of being married or why didn’t you raise a family?’ to which he shot back: “Because I am completely entangled in my work and in the Congress party.”

Following the tragic event yesterday, where a teenage girl (name withheld) jumped from the newly renovated Habba Kadal Bridge into the river Jhelum, the call for action has intensified. Despite immediate rescue efforts, the girl remains unaccounted for.

The community of Habba Kadal and neighboring areas have been vocal about the need for preventive measures. “We have repeatedly requested the authorities to erect proper fencing on the bridges,” said Omar, a concerned local resident. “Just this morning, another woman attempted to jump from the Habba Kadal Bridge but was fortunately stopped by bystanders. The bridge, despite its aesthetic appeal, has already witnessed a tragic incident.”

</excerpt>

SRINAGAR, JULY 30: In a landmark decision, the Administrative Council, chaired by Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha, has granted proprietary rights on State land to West Pakistan Displaced Persons (DPs) and Displaced Persons of 1965. This move addresses longstanding grievances and aims to end decades of discrimination faced by these communities.

The meeting was attended by Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Advisor to the Lieutenant Governor; Atal Dulloo, Chief Secretary; and Dr. Mandeep K. Bhandari, Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor.

The decision will significantly empower thousands of families across the Jammu region, aligning their rights with those of Displaced Persons from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK). The conferment of proprietary rights fulfills a long-standing demand from these communities, who have sought ownership of State land for decades.

Following the re-organization of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, the Government of India had already conferred domicile rights to West Pakistan Displaced Persons. However, this new decision extends to granting proprietary rights, thereby providing these families with legal ownership and recognition.

Additionally, the Administrative Council approved the conferment of proprietary rights on State land for Displaced Persons of 1965, bringing their status in line with those displaced in 1947 and 1971. This decision underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of all displaced communities.

The Revenue Department has been tasked with implementing safeguards in the operational guidelines to prevent misuse and unauthorized encroachments on State land. This measure is intended to ensure that the land rights are granted fairly while protecting the integrity of State land management.

This decision marks a significant step in addressing the long-standing issues faced by displaced families and provides them with the legal rights and recognition they have sought for many years.

</excerpt>

Kashmir: The Apni Party J&K organized a notable demonstration in Srinagar today, demanding that Jammu and Kashmir be granted statehood prior to any electoral processes.

Held in the city’s central area, the protest attracted a substantial turnout of party members and supporters, all advocating for timely elections and the revocation of recent directives that have expanded the administrative powers of the Lieutenant Governor (LG).

Gh Hassan Mir, the senior vice president of Apni Party, led the protest, reiterating the party’s dedication to safeguarding the democratic rights of Jammu and Kashmir’s residents.

“We insist on the immediate reinstatement of statehood. Elections should be deferred until full statehood is restored, in line with the central government’s promises. The people of Jammu and Kashmir are entitled to their democratic rights and dignity,” Mir declared.

Party leaders expressed their discontent with the central government’s procrastination in restoring statehood and called for the withdrawal of recent orders under the J&K Reorganisation Act that have empowered the LG with increased authority.

“Our issue is not with the LG personally, but the concentration of power in the LG’s office should be reversed. These orders undermine the principles of democracy and self-governance,” they asserted.

They emphasized that while elections should proceed as scheduled, the restoration of statehood must precede them.

</excerpt>

In a remarkable tribute to the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, former army officer Lieutenant Colonel Barsha Rai completed an impressive 160-kilometer run from Srinagar to Drass. The run, which took four days to complete, was aimed at honoring the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Kargil War.

“I ran to honor our brave hearts who sacrificed their lives for the nation,” Lt. Col. Rai told PTI. Married to an army officer stationed in Kashmir, Rai embarked on this journey from Srinagar to the Kargil War Memorial in the Drass sector. The run began on July 19 and concluded on July 22, with Rai averaging 40 kilometers per day. She was accompanied by the Chinar Warriors marathon team at various stretches.

The route was challenging, starting from Srinagar and moving to Wusan on the second day. On the third day, Rai tackled the 11,649-feet high Zojila Pass on the Srinagar-Leh national highway, which connects the Kashmir valley with the Ladakh region, before reaching Matayen. On the final day, she arrived at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, where tributes were paid to the martyrs.

Lt. Col. Rai, who was in seventh grade when the Kargil War began, recalled how her father, Colonel Keshab Rai, moved out overnight with his entire unit. “For fauji families like ours, what followed were days of uncertainty, loss, and despair. This run was not just a personal journey for me, but a tribute to the indomitable spirit of the soldiers who fought valiantly during the Kargil war,” she said.

She emphasized that the physical pain she endured during the run was insignificant compared to the hardships faced by soldiers during the war. “Through this run, my aim was to raise awareness about the sacrifices made by our soldiers,” she added.

Lt. Col. Barsha Rai, a fourth-generation army officer, was commissioned into the Army Service Corps in March 2010 from the Officers Training Academy in Chennai, where she was awarded the Garhwal Medal. Her great-grandfather was a Military Cross recipient, underscoring a family legacy of military service.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to be in Ladakh on July 26 to attend the 25th-anniversary celebrations of India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War.

</excerpt>

Kashmir:– Aga Syed Ruhullah, Member of Parliament from Srinagar and senior leader of the National Conference, has pledged to fight for the removal of restrictions on the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar. Speaking to reporters, Ruhullah emphasized the mosque’s significance as a crucial religious and cultural site for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ruhullah stated, “Just as we have been advocating for the Muharram processions from Zadibal to Abi Guzer, we will work to ensure that the restrictions on Jamia Masjid are lifted and that people are always allowed to offer prayers there.”

In addition to addressing the restrictions on the mosque, Ruhullah called for the immediate release of individuals arrested for expressing their support for Palestine. He condemned these arrests as unjust, underscoring the importance of protecting the rights of those standing in solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

Ruhullah further criticized the Indian government’s actions post-abrogation of Article 370, predicting that the government would empower the Lieutenant Governor (LG) and disempower the Chief Minister (CM) of Jammu and Kashmir. He pointed out that this has indeed happened.

He elaborated, “Under the J&K Re-organisation Act, any secretary of the Union Home Ministry can amend laws. Our primary duty is to fight against this and restore Jammu and Kashmir to a position where the people can make decisions about their policies.”

Ruhullah also addressed Altaf Bukhari’s call for unity, questioning Bukhari’s political stance. “Bukhari must clarify his position. During the elections, he openly stated that he supported the BJP, and they supported him,” Ruhullah noted.

Aga Syed Ruhullah’s statements highlight the ongoing struggle for political and religious autonomy in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the broader issue of civil rights within the region.

</excerpt>

Kashmir: In a historic and significant event, the 8th Muharram procession took place in Srinagar today for the second time in 30 years. This major religious observance, which began at Guru Bazar and concluded at Dal Gate, marks a notable moment for the Shia community, allowed once again to follow their traditional route after decades of restrictions due to regional instability.

The ban on the procession, enforced since the early 1990s, was lifted in 2023, permitting the procession to resume along its customary path. The lifting of the ban reflected the improving security situation in Kashmir post-2019. For three decades, successive governments had prohibited the procession, citing security concerns. However, recent years have witnessed a significant decline in violence and unrest, paving the way for such gatherings to be held peacefully.

Shia community members have expressed their approval and relief at this development. “It is heartening to see that after three decades, we are able to observe our traditions openly and safely. This reflects the changing circumstances in Kashmir,” said Ali Hussain, a local Shia leader. He added that the community views this as a positive sign of stability returning to the region.

The government had made extensive arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the procession. Security was heightened with significant deployments along the route to prevent any untoward incidents. In addition to the security measures, various facilities were provided for the participants, including medical aid and refreshment stations. Authorities had urged all participants to cooperate with security personnel and adhere to the prescribed guidelines to ensure the event’s success.

Today’s procession saw a large turnout, demonstrating the community’s enthusiasm and the restored sense of normalcy in the region. The atmosphere was one of solemnity and reverence, as mourners commemorated the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, a central figure in Shia Islam. The procession featured traditional chants, recitations, and displays of devotion, reflecting the deep cultural and religious significance of Muharram.

The peaceful observance of the 8th Muharram procession not only highlights the improving security conditions but also signifies a broader trend of stability and optimism in Kashmir. This development offers hope for continued peace and communal harmony in the years to come. Local authorities and community leaders have expressed their commitment to maintaining this positive trajectory, ensuring that such events can be held safely and respectfully in the future.

The District Magistrate of Srinagar, in a statement, emphasized the strict conditions under which the procession was conducted to ensure public safety and order. “The procession should be conducted under strict conditions to ensure public safety and order. The participants are required to use only the left side of the road, keeping the right side open for emergency services. The organizers must ensure that the procession concludes within the timeframe set by the administration, starting at 0600 hours from Guru Bazar, crossing Jehangir Chowk by 0630 hours, and passing J&K Bank Headquarters, M.A. Road by 0800 hours,” the District Magistrate, Srinagar, said. Key conditions for the procession included no anti-national or anti-administration speeches or activities, preservation of communal and sectarian harmony, respect for state security and national symbols, prohibition of flags with provocative slogans or images related to banned organizations, adherence to rules to avoid law and order issues, protection of government and public property, cooperation with local police and security agencies, uninterrupted traffic flow, accommodation for medical emergencies, and prohibition of drones and public address systems or loudspeakers.

The lifting of the ban and the successful conduct of the procession is seen as a testament to the resilience of the Kashmiri people and their enduring spirit. It underscores the importance of religious freedom and the ability to observe cultural traditions without fear or restriction. As Kashmir continues to navigate its path towards lasting peace, the return of the 8th Muharram procession stands as a symbol of hope and renewal for the region.

</excerpt>

Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir – In a heartwarming display of community spirit and empathy, young volunteers across various localities in Srinagar have united to distribute water to commuters and pedestrians amid the soaring heat and the solemn observances of Muharram. This initiative has been organized by a dedicated team of over 100 youths who have committed themselves to serving their community during the first month of the Islamic calendar.

Muharram, a significant month of mourning for Muslims worldwide, marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, and his companions. The observance is characterized by prayers, fasting, and acts of charity. In Srinagar, the youth have taken this opportunity to serve their community by providing a basic necessity – water – to those in need.

“Asgar Baba while talking with The Daily Guardian (TDG) he said we have been organizing this water distribution drive for the past three years in connection with Muharram,” said Baba. “Our team consists of more than 100 young individuals, and we operate on a rotational basis to ensure that the drive continues smoothly for the entire 14 days of Muharram.”

Second Volunteer said while taking with The Daily Guardian (TDG) The initiative is not just about distributing water; it reflects the values of compassion and solidarity that are central to the observance of Muharram. In the scorching heat of Srinagar, this act of kindness has been a source of relief for many commuters and pedestrians who often have to endure long hours of travel and walking.

The youth behind this initiative are part of a local NGO that is actively involved in various social issues. This NGO has been at the forefront of numerous community service activities, including blood donation drives, educational support programs, and other humanitarian efforts. “Our NGO is always ready to help people, whether it’s through blood donation, educational initiatives, or other forms of support,” said another volunteer to The Daily Guardian (TDG).

The water distribution drive has garnered appreciation from the local community. Many residents have expressed their gratitude for the thoughtful gesture, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in fostering a sense of community and mutual support.

“In these challenging times, it’s heartening to see our youth come together and take such commendable initiatives. It not only helps those in need but also sets a great example for others,” said a local resident.

The spirit of Muharram, marked by sacrifice and selflessness, is evident in the actions of these young volunteers. Their dedication to serving their community, especially during times of observance and in the face of harsh weather conditions, is truly inspiring. As they continue their efforts for the remainder of the 14 days of Muharram, their commitment stands as a testament to the enduring values of charity and empathy that are integral to the cultural fabric of Srinagar.

Through their efforts, the youth of Srinagar are not only honoring the memory of Imam Hussain but also reinforcing the timeless message of compassion and unity. This water distribution drive is a poignant reminder that small acts of kindness can have a significant impact, bringing relief and hope to many, and fostering a sense of togetherness in the community.

</excerpt>

Srinagar – In the heart of Srinagar’s bustling Lal Bazar stands Haji Mohammad Yousuf, a man whose life story is as rich and flavorful as the famous “Kulfi Chaha” he sells. Known for his unwavering dedication and deep-rooted faith, Yousuf’s journey from a humble kulfi vendor to a revered Hajj pilgrim is a poignant testament to the power of perseverance and tradition.

Born and raised in the vibrant Nowhatta area of downtown Srinagar, Yousuf inherited the kulfi business from his father. “My father also sold this ice cream,” he reminisces, a nostalgic smile lighting up his face. “We lived in downtown Rajouri Kadal. In 1990, when terrorism was at its peak and the situation deteriorated, we had to move from Nowhatta to Lal Bazar.”

The early 1990s were a tumultuous time in Kashmir, with escalating violence and unrest forcing many families, including Yousuf’s, to seek safer havens. The move to Lal Bazar in 1997 marked a new chapter in his life. Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing conflict, Yousuf’s determination never wavered. “Since 1997, we’ve been running our business here. Despite the ongoing turmoil, we’ve managed to stabilize our livelihood, and now, things are better,” he says with a sense of hard-earned pride.

For over 60 years, Yousuf has been dedicated to his craft, turning the family business into a thriving venture. “After my father passed away, I took over the business. Every achievement I’ve had in my life is because of this work,” he states. His success is not just measured in financial terms but also in the spiritual fulfillment it has brought him. Yousuf has funded and completed six Hajj pilgrimages, a significant feat that reflects his deep faith and gratitude.

“I’m continuing what my parents taught me, following in their footsteps, and that is why I am successful in every aspect of my life,” he explains. Yousuf’s adherence to the values instilled by his parents has not only guided his business but also shaped his worldview. He laments the current mindset of many young people in Kashmir, who he feels are overly focused on securing government jobs. “If the youth here worked hard and stood on their own feet, they could achieve so much. But many are just chasing jobs,” he observes.

Despite these challenges, Yousuf remains optimistic and grateful. “I’m very thankful that I can live my life well through this work. With this money, I also plan to take my children on Hajj,” he says, his eyes reflecting a deep sense of fulfillment and hope for the future.

Haji Mohammad Yousuf’s story is a rich narrative of resilience, faith, and gratitude. It underscores the importance of hard work and perseverance, even in the face of adversity. Through his journey, Yousuf has not only preserved a family legacy but has also become a beacon of inspiration in his community. His life is a sweet testament to the enduring spirit of those who, despite numerous challenges, continue to strive for a better tomorrow.
