Sri Lanka Assures India: Won’t Permit Territory to be Used Against New Delhi Amid China’s Aggressive Pursuit of ‘Mission Indian Ocean’

December 16, 2024, 8:30 pm

In a significant development, Sri Lanka has assured India that it will not permit its territory to be used in any manner that could compromise the security of India. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka reiterated this commitment in a joint statement with India, making it an official promise to New Delhi.

This assurance comes at a time when China is actively pursuing its ‘Mission Indian Ocean,’ which is seen as a threat to India’s interests. China has taken over Sri Lanka’s Hambantota Port after Colombo failed to repay a $1.7 billion loan, and has been docking its naval surveillance and spy ships at the port. The presence of Chinese ships in the region has raised concerns in New Delhi, given Sri Lanka’s proximity to India.

In August 2022, Sri Lanka had initially asked China to defer the arrival of its 25,000-tonne satellite and ballistic missile tracking ship Yuan Wang 5, but later allowed it to dock for ‘replenishment.’ Since then, Chinese surveillance and spy ships have regularly patrolled the Indian Ocean region and docked at Hambantota.

The Yuan Wang 5 is equipped with a robust tracking, sensing, and communication relay system, capable of detecting foreign satellites, aerial assets, and missile systems. China’s possession of the Hambantota port for a 99-year lease has raised concerns about the potential use of the port for military purposes.

Today’s agreement between India and Sri Lanka ensures that Sri Lankan territory, including its waters, will not be used in any manner that could compromise India’s security or regional stability. The two countries have also agreed to expand their bilateral partnership and aim to soon conclude a comprehensive defense cooperation pact.

India-Sri Lanka Bilateral Ties Deepen

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka held a comprehensive dialogue in New Delhi, discussing the entire gamut of bilateral ties. The two leaders reaffirmed that the India-Sri Lanka bilateral partnership is underpinned by deep-rooted cultural and civilizational ties, geographical proximity, and people-to-people relations.

President Disanayaka conveyed his deep appreciation for India’s unwavering support to the people of Sri Lanka during and after the economic crisis in 2022. Both leaders acknowledged that bilateral ties had deepened over the years and contributed significantly to Sri Lanka’s socio-economic development.

KL Rahul Vs Shubman Gill: Battle For India Captaincy As Hardik Pandya Exits Sri Lanka ODIs

July 16, 2024, 4:24 pm

Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has requested a break during the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, opening up the captaincy role for either KL Rahul or Shubman Gill, as regular captain Rohit Sharma is also expected to miss the tour.

Pandya to Lead T20I Series

India’s tour of Sri Lanka will kick off with a three-match T20I series starting on July 27. Hardik Pandya, who was India’s vice-captain in T20Is under Rohit Sharma, will take over as captain in the shortest format. A senior BCCI source confirmed that Pandya is fully fit and ready to lead the team in the T20Is, which will take place from July 27 to 30 in Pallekele.

Personal Break During ODI Series

Following the T20Is, Pandya will take a break from the three-match ODI series scheduled from August 2 to 7 in Colombo. The decision to take a break is due to personal reasons, and Pandya has already communicated this to regular skipper Rohit Sharma. The BCCI source clarified that Pandya’s break is not due to any fitness issues.

Potential Captains for ODIs

With Rohit Sharma also taking a break, the captaincy for the ODI series is up for grabs. KL Rahul, who previously captained India in the ODI series against South Africa, and Shubman Gill, who recently led India to a 4-1 series win over Zimbabwe, are the frontrunners. Rahul, being the first-choice keeper-batter in ODIs, is a strong contender for the leadership role.

Backup Captain for T20Is

There is also a decision to be made regarding Pandya’s deputy for the T20I series. The likely candidates are Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav. Suryakumar, who led the team in T20Is against South Africa last year and had a successful stint as captain in the home series against Australia, is seen as a strong candidate for the vice-captaincy.

Upcoming Schedule

The Indian squad for the series against Sri Lanka is expected to be announced soon. The T20Is will run from July 27 to 30 in Pallekele, followed by the ODIs from August 2 to 7 in Colombo.

With a mix of experienced players taking breaks and emerging talents stepping up, India’s tour of Sri Lanka promises to be an exciting opportunity for new leaders to shine.

Retirements and Transitions

Notably, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retired from T20 Internationals at the end of the World Cup, marking a period of transition and new leadership dynamics for the Indian team.

As the squad gears up for the series, fans eagerly await to see who will take the helm in the ODIs and how Hardik Pandya will lead the team in the T20Is.

Sudan Violence : Sri lanka applauded India’s for supporting evacuation of their citizens

April 25, 2023, 1:44 pm

Sri Lanka has appreciated India for offering support to evacuate the stranded Sri Lankans from Sudan after the warring factors entered into a 72-hour ceasefire agreement.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sri Lanka, MUM Ali Sabry on Monday said that the Foreign Ministry of Sri Lanka is closely monitoring the situation of its citizens in Sudan and that they were working to ensure their safe evacuation. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sri Lanka, MUM Ali Sabry on Monday tweeted, “We have been closely following the situation of Sri Lankans in #Sudan & are actively working on their safe #evacuation. We appreciate the offer of support by #India in this regard. We are confident we can achieve this within the next few days @MFA_SriLanka.”

Fighting erupted between the army and the RSF paramilitary group in Sudan’s Khartoum on April 15 and has killed as many as 427 people, knocked out hospitals and other services, and turned residential areas into war zones. Millions of people remain trapped in their homes in the capital Khartoum, running short on food and water.
In a recent development, warring factions in Sudan have agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire on Monday after the US and Saudi Arabia mediated the truce while countries are engaged in evacuating their citizens from the country.

“Following intense negotiations, the SAF and RSF have agreed to implement and uphold a 72-hour nationwide ceasefire starting midnight, April 24. We welcome their commitment to work with partners and stakeholders for permanent cessation of hostilities and humanitarian arrangements,” tweeted US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) said the US and Saudi Arabia mediated the truce, scheduled to start at midnight local time (22:00 GMT Monday), reported Al Jazeera.
In a written statement Monday, the RSF said it had agreed to the truce “in order to open humanitarian corridors, facilitate the movement of citizens and residents, enable them to fulfil their needs, reach hospitals and safe areas, and evacuate diplomatic missions.”

Previously agreed ceasefires have broken down, if the new three-day cessation of fighting holds, it could create an opportunity to get much-needed critical resources like food and medical supplies to those in need, reported CNN.

The ceasefire will help in the successful evacuations of foreigners. Some countries have successfully evacuated, including Spain, Jordan, Italy, France, Denmark and Germany, while the United Kingdom has evacuated embassy staff. Several of their convoys also carried citizens from other countries.
Saudi Arabia evacuated 10 Saudi nationals and 189 foreigners including Americans from Sudan, the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Twitter Monda, reported CNN.
