Sourav Ganguly Open to Coaching Team India in the Future

June 23, 2025, 6:49 am

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly said he is open to coaching the Indian cricket team someday. Speaking to PTI, he clarified that while nothing is confirmed yet, he hasn’t ruled it out. “We’ll see what the future holds. I’m just 50 (53), so let’s see what happens. I’m open to it. We’ll see where it goes,” Ganguly said.

Ganguly’s Role in Indian Cricket So Far

Ganguly served as BCCI president from 2019 to 2022, during a challenging phase for Indian cricket. Notably, Virat Kohli stepped down as captain during this time. Before leading the BCCI, Ganguly also headed the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). At present, he holds the position of Chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee.

Ganguly Commends Gambhir’s Coaching

Ganguly praised Gautam Gambhir, who became Team India’s head coach last year, succeeding Rahul Dravid. Although Gambhir began with defeats against Australia and New Zealand, Ganguly noted that things turned around after India’s Champions Trophy victory. “Gautam (Gambhir) is doing a good job. He started off a little slow… but he picked up with the Champions Trophy. This is going to be a big series (vs England),” he stated.

Remarks on Gambhir’s Coaching Style

While Ganguly admitted he hasn’t closely observed Gambhir as a coach, he stressed that Gambhir is both passionate and clear-minded. “He’s very straightforward, he sees things clearly, and he’s very open about what he feels,” Ganguly said.

He also recalled his playing days with Gambhir and appreciated the respect he showed toward senior players. “He was a great guy with a lot of respect for me and the senior players. Even now, I can see he is extremely passionate about his job,” Ganguly added.

Ganguly’s Best Wishes for Gambhir

Ganguly wished Gambhir success in his role and emphasized the importance of learning through early challenges. “He struggled a bit in Australia, but just like everyone else, he’ll learn, he’ll grow, and he’ll become better.”

Sourav Ganguly Criticises BCCI Over England Test Squad Selection

June 11, 2025, 4:41 pm

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has voiced his disagreement with the exclusion of Shreyas Iyer from India’s squad for the upcoming Test series against England. Despite an impressive performance over the past year, Iyer was left out of the final squad — a move Ganguly finds unjustified.

Iyer recently finished as the top scorer for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 and had been considered a strong middle-order candidate, especially in the absence of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Ganguly stressed that Iyer’s form and adaptability under pressure warranted his inclusion.

“He has been playing at his best in the last one year, and should have been in this team. Last one year has been fantastic for him. He isn’t the player who got left out. He is now scoring under pressure, taking responsibility, playing the short ball well. Although Test cricket’s different, I would have had him in this series to see what he can do,” Ganguly said in a statement to RevSportz.

England Include Teen Pacer Eddie Jack for Practice Ahead of First Test

Meanwhile, England have invited 19-year-old fast bowler Eddie Jack to train with their senior team ahead of the first Test match at Headingley on June 20. Jack impressed selectors with his performances for the England Lions during their two unofficial Test matches against India A.

In the second match held in Northampton, Jack dismissed Indian star KL Rahul after the latter had scored a century. The tall Hampshire pacer, standing at 6 feet 4 inches, also dismissed Dhruv Jurel — player of the match in the 2022 Ranchi Test — returning with figures of 2/71.

Jack, who has yet to debut in the County Championship, already has two first-class games under his belt. He has also represented England U-19s and played a notable warm-up match against Zimbabwe, where he took five wickets for a combined counties XI.

According to The Times, London, England Lions coaches like Andrew Flintoff, Graeme Swann, and Mark Wood have been impressed by Jack’s consistency and ability to beat the bat of several Indian Test regulars, including Nitish Reddy and Jurel.

India’s five-match Test series against England will kick off the team’s new World Test Championship cycle, beginning June 20 at Headingley.

‘Terrorism Cannot Be Tolerated’: Sourav Ganguly Calls for Cutting Cricket Ties with Pakistan

April 26, 2025, 11:26 am

Ex-India skipper Sourav Ganguly has once again brought up the topic of India Pakistan cricket relations. After the Pahalgam terror attack, Ganguly demanded severing all cricketing relations with Pakistan saying ‘Terrorism Cannot Be Tolerated’. On Tuesday, at least 26 individuals were killed in a heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Sourav Ganguly’s statement followed Indian cricketer Shreevats Goswami suggesting the same.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reaffirmed it would adhere to the foreign policy of the Indian government. The board also quashed reports it had requested that the ICC segregate India and Pakistan in coming tournaments. However, Sourav Ganguly remains adamant more action is necessary.

“Terrorism Cannot Be Tolerated,” Says Ganguly

Speaking on Friday, Sourav Ganguly delivered a clear message: India needs to stand firm. “100 per cent, this should be done,” he replied when asked whether they would cut ties. “Strict action is needed. It is no joke that such things occur every year. Terrorism cannot be accepted.”

Sourav Ganguly’s remarks mirror public opinion that intensifies with each border attack. He feels sporting relations with Pakistan convey the wrong message at such times.

BCCI Stands Firm, Treads Government Line

The BCCI so far has not made independent steps. Officials confirmed that they would adhere to the central government’s directive. There has been no bilateral series between India and Pakistan since 2012. They have only competed against each other in international tournaments under ICC or ACC.

Additionally, BCCI vehemently denied requesting the ICC to keep India and Pakistan in different groups. The board explained that it has not made any such segregation requests prior to future ICC events.

Symbolic or Strategic Step?

Sourav Ganguly’s observation lends credence to the expanding chorus against playing Pakistan on the cricket pitch. Critics say that sports and politics must be kept apart. Nonetheless, in India’s context, cricket is something more than sport—it is national sentiment.

The break would perhaps not end terror. But Ganguly, Goswami, and countless other citizens believe that it would drive home a telling point: sporting diplomacy can always take a second seat to national security.

India Pakistan Cricket

With elections and diplomatic pressure increasing, the impulse to shun Pakistan in international arenas—including cricket—will gain strength. Ganguly’s aggressive statement lends moral force to that cause.

At present, BCCI will await the call of the government. But the intensifying public and political pressure might soon compel an unequivocal ruling on the future of India Pakistan cricket relations.

Former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly was involved in a road accident while traveling to Burdwan University in West Bengal for an event. Fortunately, he escaped without any injuries.

Accident Occurred During Heavy Rainfall

The incident happened at Dantanpur on the Durgapur Expressway amid heavy rainfall. A lorry abruptly overtook Ganguly’s convoy, forcing his driver to brake suddenly. This led to a chain reaction where vehicles following his car collided, resulting in minor damage to two cars, police said.

No Injuries Reported, Ganguly’s Journey Resumed After Brief Halt

According to Kamanasish Sen, SP Hooghly (Rural), no one sustained injuries in the accident. Ganguly had to wait for approximately 10 minutes before continuing to Burdwan for his scheduled event.

Ganguly Expresses Gratitude at Burdwan University Event

Speaking at Burdwan University, Ganguly shared his excitement about visiting the district. As quoted by Hindustaan, he said, “I am overwhelmed. It feels great to be in Burdwan. I am even more happy that you invited me. BDS (Burdwan Sports Association) was asking me to come for a long time. It feels great to be here today.”

He also praised Burdwan for producing talented cricketers and expressed hope that more players from the region would get opportunities in the future.

Daughter Sana Ganguly’s Accident in January

This incident follows a previous road accident involving Ganguly’s daughter, Sana, in January. Her car was hit by a bus on Kolkata’s Diamond Harbour Road. Although the car suffered minor damage, she was unharmed.

The bus fled the scene but was pursued by her driver and eventually stopped near Sakher Bazar. Police arrived promptly and detained the bus driver.

Sourav Ganguly’s Legal Fight: YouTuber Faces Allegations Of Abusive Remarks

September 19, 2024, 11:03 am

Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, has recently been involved in two high-profile incidents. Last month, Ganguly, along with his wife Dona and daughter Sana, organized a candlelight vigil in Kolkata to seek justice for a victim in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case.

Police Complaint Against YouTuber

In a separate matter, Sourav Ganguly has lodged a formal complaint against Mrinmoy Das, a Bengali YouTuber known as Cinebap. The complaint, filed through Ganguly’s secretary Taniya Bhattacharya, accuses Das of using offensive language and making derogatory remarks about Ganguly in a social media video. The video reportedly includes inappropriate content related to the recent rape and murder case of a doctor in Kolkata, linking Ganguly to the controversy in a defamatory manner.

The complaint details the video as harmful and insulting, stating: “This individual has posted a video on a social media platform that targets Sourav Ganguly, using abusive language and making derogatory remarks, which are harmful to his reputation.”

Call for Legal Action

Bhattacharya’s complaint urges immediate legal action, highlighting the seriousness of cyberbullying and defamation. She requests the intervention of the cyber department to address the issue and ensure justice for Ganguly.

Ongoing Police Investigation

Police have confirmed that they are investigating the case as a potential instance of online harassment. A police officer noted: “We have received an email regarding the matter and are currently investigating it.” This situation underscores the growing concern of cyberbullying in today’s digital age.

Public Backlash and Criticism

Additionally, Sourav Ganguly has faced criticism for his remarks on the tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, further adding to the media attention surrounding him.

Not Sourav Ganguly! 2011 World Cup Star Set To Coach Delhi Capitals For IPL 2025: Report

August 24, 2024, 11:03 pm

The Delhi Capitals have recently parted ways with Ricky Ponting as their head coach, and former India captain Sourav Ganguly, currently the Director of Cricket Operations at the franchise, had shown interest in stepping into a coaching role. However, it appears that Yuvraj Singh, the legendary Indian all-rounder and Ganguly’s former protege, might be considered for a coaching position for IPL 2025.

According to a Sportstar report, Delhi Capitals are eager to include Yuvraj Singh in their coaching staff. A final decision on this is still pending. There were previous indications that Gujarat Titans might replace Ashish Nehra with Yuvraj Singh, but it now seems that the IPL 2022 champions are looking for a former player to fill Gary Kirsten’s role, who has taken on the white-ball head coach position for Pakistan.

The report also mentions that Delhi Capitals aim to strengthen their batting lineup for IPL 2025 and view Yuvraj Singh as a potential mentor for their batters. Although Yuvraj lacks formal coaching experience, he has worked with players like Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma over the years.

While Sourav Ganguly had expressed a desire to take on a coaching role, he is expected to continue overseeing the franchise’s overall operations as the Director of Cricket Operations. Yuvraj Singh previously played for Delhi Capitals, having been the highest-paid player in IPL history when he was bought for Rs 16 crore in the 2015 auction. He scored 248 runs in 14 matches for the team that year before being released ahead of the 2016 auction.

Sourav Ganguly’s Comments on Kolkata Rape-Murder Sparks Controversy, Issues Clarification Amid Backlash

August 20, 2024, 9:10 am

Earlier this month, former Indian cricket captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly condemned the tragic rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. His comments, however, ignited controversy in various circles.

As public protests around the incident intensified, with celebrities joining the cause, Ganguly expressed his deep concern. Speaking on August 11 at an event in Kolkata, he said that as a father of a daughter, the incident had shaken him profoundly. He emphasized the need for strict action and the importance of security measures like CCTV cameras. However, Ganguly also remarked that such incidents should not lead to sweeping judgments about the safety of West Bengal or India as a whole, insisting that women are generally safe in the region.

His statement, particularly the part suggesting that West Bengal should not be judged based on a single incident, drew criticism on social media. In response to the backlash, Ganguly issued a clarification, stating that his earlier comments had been misinterpreted. He reiterated that the incident was horrifying and that the perpetrators should be punished severely to prevent future occurrences. Ganguly acknowledged the widespread protests, noting that such an outcry would be expected anywhere in the world in response to a similar tragedy.

Sourav Ganguly at 52: From Cricket Legend to BCCI President

July 8, 2024, 9:58 am

Sourav Ganguly is widely recognized for revolutionizing Indian cricket with his aggressive leadership style. Taking charge during a turbulent period after a match-fixing scandal, he transformed Team India’s fortunes, particularly in overseas matches.

Celebrating his 52nd birthday on July 8, Ganguly’s career as a legendary captain is marked by significant victories. One of the most memorable was India’s triumph in the 2002 NatWest series against England, capped by his iconic jersey-waving gesture at Lord’s.

He made his international debut in 1992, featuring in an ODI against the West Indies. Four years later, Ganguly announced his arrival in Test cricket with consecutive centuries in England. Under his captaincy, India reached the final of the 2003 ODI World Cup, though they were defeated by Ricky Ponting’s Australia.

However, his tenure faced challenges in 2005 when Greg Chappell’s appointment as head coach led to controversies. Criticism leaked to the media resulted in Ganguly being dropped from the team, replaced by Rahul Dravid as captain. Undeterred, Ganguly staged a strong comeback in 2006 during a tour of South Africa, culminating in a career-best Test score of 239 against Pakistan in Bangalore the following year.

After retiring from international cricket in 2008 and all forms of the game in 2012, Ganguly remained active in cricket as a commentator and served as President of the Cricket Association of Bengal from 2015. He later became a mentor for Delhi Capitals in the IPL before serving as BCCI President. Currently, he holds the role of Head of Cricket (Director) at Delhi Capitals.

Sourav Ganguly’s innings, including his memorable performances like scoring 239 against Pakistan and pivotal knocks in international cricket, cement his legacy as one of India’s cricketing greats.

“Play freely in T20 format”: Sourav Ganguly’s advice to Team India for T20 World Cup

June 1, 2024, 5:29 pm

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, on Saturday, offered advice to Team India for their upcoming ICC T20 World Cup campaign. He emphasized that the Men in Blue should play freely from the start of their innings in the tournament.

India will face Bangladesh in their only warm-up game on June 1 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Ganguly expressed confidence in the team’s potential, describing India as having a “fantastic” side for the T20 World Cup and hoping they will perform well in the prestigious ICC event.

“We hope that India will play well. All the players are good. There are so many players in our country that it becomes difficult to select the playing XI. We are spoiled for choices. They have a fantastic side,” Ganguly told ANI at an event.

Regarding predictions for the top five teams, Ganguly acknowledged the unpredictability of the T20 format, noting that any side can advance. When asked if he had any advice for the Indian team, Ganguly said, “This is Rahul Dravid’s job because he is the coach. We will just watch and cheer for India. I would just like to say that we have to play freely in the T20 format.”

The ICC T20 World Cup will take place in the West Indies and the USA from June 1 to 29. India aims to end their ICC trophy drought, having last secured an ICC title with the Champions Trophy in 2013. Since then, India has reached the 50-over World Cup final in 2023, semifinals in 2015 and 2019, the title clash of the ICC World Test Championship in 2021 and 2023, the T20 WC final in 2014, and semifinals in 2016 and 2022, but has not clinched a major ICC trophy.

India hopes to win their first T20 WC title since the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2007 in South Africa. In the last edition held in Australia in 2022, India was eliminated by England in the semifinals by 10 wickets.

India T20 WC Squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.

“Rishabh Pant Will Learn with Time Since He’s a Young Captain”: Sourav Ganguly

May 15, 2024, 6:39 pm

IPL 2024: Following Delhi Capitals’ victory over Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2024, Sourav Ganguly, the Director of Cricket for DC, commended skipper Rishabh Pant’s performance, highlighting his return from injury and his growth as a young captain. Pant, who scored 33 runs from 23 balls in the first innings, received praise for his resilience throughout the season.

Ganguly acknowledged Pant’s potential for improvement as a captain, emphasizing that leadership skills develop over time. Despite being relatively young in his role, Pant’s instinctual decision-making on the field was noted as a positive attribute that will further refine with experience.

Reflecting on the match, Ganguly credited Delhi Capitals’ strong batting performance, led by Stubbs and Abhishek Porel, for setting a formidable total of 208/4. Despite LSG’s valiant effort, bolstered by Nicholas Pooran and Arshad Khan’s half-centuries, DC’s effective bowling display, particularly by Ishant Sharma, limited LSG to 189/9.

With this win, Delhi Capitals secured the fifth position in the standings, with seven wins and seven losses, totalling 14 points. Lucknow Super Giants, on the other hand, concluded the season in seventh place, with six wins, seven losses, and 12 points, their playoff prospects contingent on the outcomes of other matches.

Rinku Should Not Be Disheartened: Sourav Ganguly Offers Words of Encouragement to Batter After T20 WC Snub

May 4, 2024, 1:05 am

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly believes that the exclusion of hard-hitting batsman Rinku Singh from India’s 15-player ICC T20 World Cup squad is due to the decision to include a fourth spinner. During a press conference, India’s captain Rohit Sharma indicated the preference for four spinners in the squad without revealing the exact rationale behind the decision at the moment, hinting at a strategic plan in place.

Despite many in the cricketing community advocating for Rinku’s inclusion in the squad, India designated the Kolkata Knight Riders star as a travelling reserve. Rinku, who has amassed 356 runs for India in 15 T20Is with an impressive average of 89 and a strike rate of 176.24, found himself on the reserve list.

Commenting on Rinku’s omission, Ganguly offered words of encouragement, expressing belief in the young player’s future prospects and advising him not to be disheartened.

Ganguly also commended the management and Rohit for assembling a “strong team” for the upcoming tournament, considering it one of the fairest selections he has witnessed.

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar echoed similar sentiments, describing Rinku’s exclusion as one of the toughest decisions the selectors had to make. He emphasized that the decision was solely based on the team’s strategy to include four spinners and not a reflection of Rinku’s capabilities.

India finds itself in Group A of the ICC tournament alongside Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, and co-hosts USA. Their campaign will kick off against Ireland on June 5, followed by a highly anticipated clash against Pakistan on June 9, both matches to be held at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York. Subsequently, India will face off against the USA and Canada on June 12 and 15, respectively.

IPL 2024: KKR Opener Phil Salt Broke This Record of Former India Legend Sourav Ganguly

April 30, 2024, 1:49 am

Philip Salt, the opening batsman for Kolkata Knight Riders, set a new record by surpassing former franchise captain Sourav Ganguly’s longstanding achievement. Salt’s explosive innings of 68 runs led the Knights to a convincing 7-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024.

This remarkable performance boosted his total runs for the season to 344 in six innings, eclipsing Ganguly’s previous record for most runs scored at Eden Gardens in a single IPL season. Salt’s feat establishes him as the highest run-scorer in a single season at Eden Gardens, surpassing Ganguly’s tally of 331 runs set in 2010, which had stood for 14 years.

Despite Andre Russell’s close attempt in 2019 with 311 runs in 7 innings, Salt’s exceptional batting ensured an easy chase for KKR, sealing their win with seven wickets in hand. His aggressive approach during the powerplay laid the groundwork for KKR’s successful pursuit, as he smashed 68 runs off 33 balls at a staggering strike rate of 206.06, featuring seven boundaries and five sixes.

Following Salt’s dismissal, Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer cautiously guided KKR to victory with over three overs to spare. With this triumph, KKR solidified their position at second place on the IPL 2024 points table with 12 points, while Delhi Capitals slipped to sixth position, also with 12 points.

After Sourav Ganguly, Mohammed Shami likely to contest Lok Sabha elections from West Bengal on BJP ticket

March 8, 2024, 3:33 pm

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reached out to the fast bowler Mohammed Shami, considering him as a potential candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The party is exploring the possibility of fielding Shami from the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal. While there is speculation surrounding Shami’s potential political debut, no official statement has been released on this matter.

According to reports, the BJP has initiated contact with Shami, expressing interest in having him contest from the Basirhat seat in Bengal. Currently represented by Nusrat Jahan of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), this constituency could see Shami, who plays domestic cricket for West Bengal, potentially influencing the Muslim vote bank in the region if he decides to enter politics.

The BJP recently unveiled its initial list of 195 candidates, with ongoing discussions for additional names. Shami’s inclusion might be considered in the second list. Additionally, there are rumors circulating about former Indian captain and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President Sourav Ganguly also making a foray into politics.

Sources suggest that Ganguly might contest the Lok Sabha elections on a Trinamool Congress ticket. West Bengal, with 42 Lok Sabha seats, witnessed the TMC securing 22 seats in the 2019 elections, while the BJP won 18 seats, and the Congress secured two seats. Speculations abound that the Congress and TMC might form an alliance, known as the ‘India’ alliance, for the upcoming elections.

Earlier the veteran left-handed batsman talked about Virat Kohli’s form and said Kohli not only needs to score runs for the team but “for himself”.

The second match of Asia Cup 2022 was played between India and Pakistan at Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. Pakistan defeated India badly in the last match of the T20 World Cup 2021.

India avenged that previous defeat by defeating Pakistan by 5 wickets in this match. In this match, India won the toss and invited Pakistan to bat first.

Pakistan’s team was bundled out for just 147 runs in 19.5 overs. Chasing the target, India won the match by 5 wickets and started their Asia Cup 2022 tournament with a win.

Meanwhile, chasing the target, India’s team started very poorly. Vice-captain KL Rahul was clean bowled on the very first ball and returned to the pavilion. After this, captain Rohit Sharma and former captain Virat Kohli took charge of India’s innings and there was a partnership of 49 runs between the two.

Unfortunately, they both also returned to the pavilion one after the other. Jadeja, who came to bat after him, took charge of the innings and shared a 36-run partnership with Suryakumar Yadav. After this, Surya also lost his wicket.

After that Pandya came and there was a 50 runs partnership between Jadeja. But Jadeja was also dismissed after scoring 35 runs in the last over of the innings. But Hardik hit a six and with his winning shot, India won the match by 5 wickets. Pandya has also adjudged the player of the match.

However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah also congratulated team India on its win over Pakistan in the opening match of Asia Cup 2022.

Ganguly to be discharged from hospital today

January 6, 2021, 2:46 am

Noted cardiac surgeon Dr Devi Shetty, who came to Kolkata on Tuesday morning to see former Indian skipper and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly, said that the former batting great is stable and can now be discharged from the hospital.

“Sourav Ganguly is fit and he can get back to normal life as it was. He can be discharged tomorrow,” Dr Shetty said. Ganguly had three blocked coronary arteries and a stent was inserted in one to remove the blockage.

A nine-member medical team was formed at Kolkata’s Woodlands Hospital to look after Ganguly, as he suffered a mild cardiac arrest on Saturday. Inputs were taken on Zoom and on the phone from Dr Shetty and other cardiac surgeons.

Ganguly had suffered a sudden blackout following mild chest pain during a workout session at his Behala residence on Saturday. He had been moved to Kolkata’s Woodlands Hospital that day itself where he underwent angioplasty.

A medical team, led by state-run SSKM Hospital’s cardiology department head Dr Saroj Mondal is currently looking after Ganguly’s health check-ups at the hospital.
