SIT to investigate NHAI’s role in Bhankrota fire after delayed road proposal

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Commissionerate will investigate whether the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is responsible for the deadly fire that broke out in Bhankrota on Friday. The Commissionerate had proposed a cloverleaf interchange four years ago to connect the Jaipur-Ajmer highway with the ring road through Bhankrota, but no action was taken by the NHAI. Police investigations revealed that the fire started when an LPG gas tanker made a U-turn from Bhankrota towards the ring road, leading to the tragic incident.
Commissionerate ADCP (First) Kunwar Rashtradeep told that there is a populated area around the highway in Bhankrota, due to which there is a lot of pressure of vehicles in this area. Also, due to being a crowded area, there is a situation of jam here every day. Meanwhile, with the ring road reaching Bhankrota, the pressure of heavy vehicles in this area also increased. Vehicles plying on the Jaipur-Ajmer highway also started using the DPS cut at Bhankrota to go to Ring Road from this route, due to which the traffic jam in Bhankrota increased even more, due to which there was a situation of jam here during the day and the cases of road accidents also started increasing continuously. Because on the Jaipur-Ajmer highway, to go from Bhankrota to Ring Road, drivers have to take a U-turn from the DPS cut, due to which not only the traffic is often disrupted, but the danger of road accidents also remains always there. In view of all these situations, the Commissionerate had sent a proposal to NHAI four years ago to build a clover leaf interchange road to connect the Jaipur-Ajmer highway to the Ring Road from Bhankrota, but the NHAI did not pay attention to this matter, due to which a horrific fire broke out in Bhankrota on Friday and 14 people died a painful death. Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph said that the LPG gas tanker was coming from Ajmer to Jaipur, while the container that hit it was going from Jaipur to Ajmer. On Friday the LPG tanker was taking a U-turn from the DPS cut in Bhankrota to go to the ring road. At the same time, the container hit the tanker, due to which both the vehicles caught fire and with a loud explosion, 20 tonnes of LPG gas from the tanker spread on both sides of the road, due to which the heat of the fire spread in an area.

Kerala High Court Directs SIT to Appoint Nodal Officer Following Hema Committee Report

Kerala High Court instructed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating cases stemming from the Hema Committee report to appoint a nodal officer On Wednesday. This officer will serve as a point of contact for individuals who have received threat messages, allowing them to file complaints.

The Hema Committee was established in response to a 2017 sexual assault case involving an actor and submitted its findings to the Chief Minister on December 31, 2019.

SC extended interim protection from arrest to actor Siddique

In a related development, the Supreme Court extended interim protection from arrest to actor Siddique in connection with a rape case. A bench comprising Justices Bela M. Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma granted this relief until the next hearing date. Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Siddique, informed the court that the investigation agency had repeatedly inquired about his phone and laptop from 2016, which he no longer possesses.

The Supreme Court sought clarification from the Kerala Police regarding Siddique’s attendance during questioning. The Kerala Government responded that he had been appearing but was not cooperating fully. Justice Sharma noted that Siddique had given his old phone to a shop when he purchased a new one.

Rohatgi requested an adjournment due to a sore throat. Siddique had approached the Supreme Court seeking anticipatory bail in the ongoing rape case. Previously, the Kerala Police issued a lookout notice for Siddique, suspecting he might flee the state after the Kerala High Court dismissed his anticipatory bail application.

The case is currently under investigation by the SIT established by the Kerala government. Siddique was charged by the museum police in Thiruvananthapuram on August 27, following a complaint from a young actress alleging rape and criminal intimidation. Siddique has firmly denied these allegations.

This situation arose amid a wave of accusations in the Malayalam film industry, triggered by the “Me Too” movement, which exposed various instances of sexual abuse earlier in August. In the wake of these allegations, Siddique resigned from his position as general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), leading to the resignation of the entire 17-member executive committee of the organization. Several women actors have made serious accusations against prominent figures in the industry, including director Ranjith and actors Mukesh, Jayasurya, and Edavela Babu, among others.

Gwalior: Elderly Mother and Daughter Discovered Dead in Apartment; SIT Formed for Investigation

In a shocking incident, an elderly woman and her daughter were discovered dead inside their apartment in the Garden Homes complex of Gwalior district, Madhya Pradesh, on Tuesday. The police received information about the incident and promptly arrived at the scene to investigate.

Identification of the Deceased

The deceased have been identified as Indu Puri, aged 81, and her daughter Reena Bhalla, aged 56. Their bodies have been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the case, and a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team has been called to the apartment for further examination. Superintendent of Police (SP) Dharmvir Singh provided details about the investigation, stating, “We received information in the morning that an elderly woman and her 56-year-old daughter were found dead in an apartment in the Garden Homes residential complex, which is a gated community.”

Initial findings reveal no signs of forced entry into the apartment. The SP mentioned that the police and the FSL team are working to uncover the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

“The actual cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem report, and we are investigating the matter from various angles,” Singh added. He emphasized the secure nature of the residential complex, noting that it is monitored by security guards and that nearby residents and domestic staff are being questioned as part of the investigation.

The investigation is still in progress, with authorities seeking to gather more information to piece together the events leading to the tragic deaths of Indu Puri and Reena Bhalla.

Malayalam Actor Jayasurya Interrogated by SIT Over Sexual Assault Allegations

Malayalam actor Jayasurya has been questioned by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) regarding sexual assault allegations made against him. The interrogation took place on Tuesday at the Cantonment police station in Thiruvananthapuram.

The allegations against Jayasurya have intensified following accusations from multiple female colleagues in the Malayalam film industry, coinciding with the release of the Hema Committee Report. This report investigated claims of sexual harassment within the industry.

Legal Actions and Actor’s Response

Two actresses have filed police complaints against Jayasurya, leading to legal action and public statements from the actor. On September 1, during a social media post on his 46th birthday, Jayasurya addressed the allegations, stating that he was in the United States at the time.

In his statement, he wrote, “Due to my personal commitments, my family and I have been in America for the past month, and during this time, two false allegations on the grounds of sexual harassment were made against me.” He expressed his intention to pursue legal remedies, stating, “I have decided to move forward with this legally. One of the complainants, actress Sonia Malhar, recounted her experience, claiming an incident occurred on the set of the film Pigman in Thodupuzha. She stated, “When I came out of the washroom, someone grabbed me. It was actor Jayasurya. I pushed him away. He apologized and told me that he wouldn’t repeat it and that we should continue as friends.” Malhar also discussed the backlash she faced on social media after sharing her story publicly.

Another actress, Minu Muneer, has also accused Jayasurya of inappropriate conduct during their collaborations on various projects. She alleged, “Once, as I was coming out from the toilet, Jayasurya hugged me from behind and even kissed me forcefully.” Her claims led to the registration of an FIR against Jayasurya, as well as another against actor Mukesh, a CPI (M) MLA, for similar allegations.

The Kerala Police confirmed that the second FIR against Jayasurya was filed under several sections of the Indian Penal Code related to assault and harassment.

Tirupati Laddu Row: Chandrababu Naidu Welcomes Supreme Court’s Decision on SIT

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu expressed his approval of the Supreme Court’s decision to establish a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the alleged adulteration of Tirupati’s prasadam. In a post on X, Naidu stated, “I welcome the Honourable Supreme Court’s order of setting up SIT, comprising officers from CBI, AP Police, and FSSAI to investigate the issue of adulteration of Tirupati laddu. Satyamev Jayate. Om Namo Venkatesaya.”

Opposition Criticism

The opposition party, YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), viewed the Supreme Court’s decision as a setback for the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Chief Minister Naidu. In a post on X, YSRCP criticized Naidu and coalition leaders, stating, “Don’t make political comments on Laddu.. Don’t become a drama. Chandrababu and the leaders of the coalition government were strongly criticized by the Supreme Court. Supreme Court’s Directive

On Friday, the Supreme Court constituted an independent SIT to investigate allegations regarding the use of animal fat in the preparation of laddus served as prasadam at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh. Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan emphasized the significance of the prasadam to millions of devotees worldwide, stating, “We don’t want this to turn into political drama. If there is an independent body, there will be confidence.”

The apex court’s order specified that the SIT will consist of two officers from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), two from the Andhra Pradesh state police, and a senior official from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The CBI director will supervise the SIT and will replace the SIT previously established by the state government. Maharashtra Deputy CM forms SIT for Badlapur school assault

Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the serious allegations of sexual assault involving two minor girls at a school in Badlapur, Thane district. Fadnavis condemned the incident and emphasized that a fast-track court would be pursued to expedite justice for the victims. The SIT will be led by IPS officer Arti Singh, who has been tasked with conducting a thorough inquiry. Fadnavis also took to social media to assure that a charge sheet would be filed promptly and that the police would make every effort to ensure the perpetrators are swiftly punished.

SIT and CBI Double Trouble: Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College Ex Principal Under Dual Scrutiny

The financial transactions at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College during the tenure of former Principal Sandip Ghosh will be scrutinized following allegations of irregularities. The West Bengal government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe these alleged financial discrepancies. The SIT, led by Inspector General of Police Dr. Pranav Kumar, is tasked with accessing relevant documents from government departments and private agencies to ensure a thorough investigation. The team is expected to submit its report within a month.

Sandip Ghosh, who has faced severe criticism following the rape-murder of a doctor on the hospital premises, is also under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI is questioning him about hospital security, the handling of his resignation, the decision to declare the death a suicide prematurely, the contamination of the crime scene, and the sudden renovation of rooms near where the doctor’s body was found.

A note from the government’s Home and Hill Affairs Department Internal Security Branch stated, “The SIT will have the liberty to access any relevant document from government departments and private agencies required for expeditious completion of the inquiry.” The SIT will investigate the alleged financial irregularities from January 2021 to the present.

The decision to transfer Ghosh to the National Medical College and Hospital within hours of his resignation has drawn significant criticism from the Opposition, civil society, and the Calcutta High Court. The court questioned the appropriateness of promoting someone who failed in their duty to protect students. The judges remarked, “Even assuming the resignation was not accepted, the least that can be expected from a responsible higher official of the concerned department is to immediately relieve the Principal from his duties and not assign him any other duty of equal responsibility.”

Supreme Court Rejects SIT Probe into Electoral Bonds Claims

On Friday, the Supreme Court denied a series of petitions seeking a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into alleged quid pro quo arrangements between corporates and political parties via Electoral Bonds donations.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra stated that forming an SIT headed by a former judge of this court is premature, as normal legal remedies have not yet been exhausted. The bench emphasized that Article 32 intervention must follow the pursuit of available legal remedies and should not replace them.

The court also dismissed requests to direct authorities to recover Electoral Bonds donations from political parties or to reopen their income tax assessments, deeming such actions premature without a factual conclusion.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing one of the petitioners, argued that there was a quid pro quo between corporates who bought bonds and the political parties that received the funds. However, the bench questioned why normal legal processes, such as lodging FIRs or filing private complaints, had not been pursued for these claims.

The petitions, filed by NGOs Common Cause and the Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL), sought investigations into the funding sources of shell and loss-making companies contributing to political parties, claiming this was evidence of illicit quid pro quo arrangements. They argued that a comprehensive investigation under Supreme Court supervision was necessary to uncover the alleged scam involving significant sums.

The petitioners argued that the Electoral Bonds scheme, which allowed anonymous donations to political parties, involved complex conspiracies among company officials, government officials, and political parties, requiring thorough investigation by agencies like the ED, IT, and CBI.

In February, the Supreme Court had ruled against the Electoral Bonds Scheme, which had enabled anonymous political funding. The court ordered the State Bank of India to halt the issuance of Electoral Bonds and invalidated amendments to the Income Tax Act and the Representation of the People Act that facilitated anonymous donations.

Prajwal Revanna To Return To India; SIT Prepared For Airport Arrest: Latest Updates

Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, accused of sexually abusing women, is scheduled to return to India from Germany. Prajwal, who faces multiple allegations of sexual abuse, announced in a video earlier this week that he plans to return on May 31 and cooperate with a Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the matter.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has stated that if Prajwal fails to fulfill his commitment to appear before the SIT, further actions, such as passport cancellation, will be considered.

According to reports, Revanna has taken a flight from Munich to India, expected to arrive after midnight.
The Ministry of External Affairs has announced that the procedure to revoke Revanna’s diplomatic passport has been initiated, and he has been issued a show cause notice. “MEA has initiated action under provisions in the Passport Act 1967 for revocation of the diplomatic passport of Prajwal Revanna. A show cause notice was issued to the passport holder on 23rd May, giving him 10 working days to respond to our notice. We are waiting for a response and will take further action as per the rules,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
Just a day earlier, Prajwal Revanna submitted an anticipatory bail plea in the sexual assault case at the Bengaluru sessions court.
Congress leader and Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge criticized suspended JD-S leader Prajwal Revanna, stating,”I’m quite surprised that he remained silent when videos went viral, when a complaint was filed by the victims, and when the pen drives were being distributed. Suddenly, his consciousness wakes up and he says I was depressed and isolated. If you see the video closely, it doesn’t look like a person in depression is speaking. He did not say a word about the victims. He could have said the same thing on Days 1, and 2. Why did it take him 30 days? If you look from a bird’s eye view, you’ll know that the BJP is directing everything.”

The police are on high alert ahead of Prajwal’s arrival, with a team of SIT officials stationed at the airport. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara stated that if Prajwal arrives, he will be arrested and legal proceedings will commence. Immigration officials at the airport will detain him and hand him over to the SIT, given the lookout notice against him. If he fails to arrive, the government will push for the cancellation of his passport.

The 33-year-old Prajwal, grandson of JD(S) patriarch and former PM HD Deve Gowda, and the NDA’s candidate from the Hassan Lok Sabha constituency, faces allegations of multiple instances of sexual abuse. These allegations surfaced after several explicit videos purportedly showing Prajwal engaging in sexual assault were made public. A SIT is currently investigating these cases. Prajwal reportedly left for Germany on April 27, a day after the Hassan polls, and his whereabouts remain unknown. Interpol has also issued a Blue Corner Notice seeking information on him.

Prajwal reportedly left for Germany on April 27, the day after polls in Hassan, and is currently evading authorities.

The Interpol has issued a ‘Blue Corner Notice’ to trace him, following a request from the SIT via the CBI.

An arrest warrant was issued against Prajwal Revanna by a special court for elected representatives on May 18, following an application by the SIT.

State orders SIT investigation into Disha Salian’s death

Tuesday saw the state government order an SIT (Special Investigation Team) investigation into the passing of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s manager, Disha Salian. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told the Assembly in December of last year that an SIT would be established to look into the Salian’s death. In October of this year, BJP leader Nitesh Rane demanded that senior Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray and his father address the Disha Salian case, specifically focusing on UBT leader Aaditya Thackeray.

“Today Uddhav Thackeray will be addressing workers at Shivaji Park, Sanjay Raut says it is the day to speak the truth. So will Uddhav Thackeray in today’s address speak the truth about his son Aaditya Thackeray’s involvement in the Disha Salian murder case? Tuesday saw the state government request a SIT (Special Investigation Team) investigation into the passing of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s manager, Disha Salian. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told the Assembly in December of last year that a SIT will be established to look into the Salian’s death.

Statement of WFI president Brij Bhushan recorded by Delhi Police

The SIT has been formed and Delhi police have recorded the statement of Wrestling Federation of India president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on the alleged sexual harassment case of female wrestlers.

“On the complaint of the wrestlers, the statement of WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was recorded and some documents were demanded. Brij Bhushan denied the allegations levelled against him. SIT has been formed with 10 police personnel including four women police officers. A team of ten people was formed under the supervision of a woman DCP,” said Delhi Police. Delhi Police filed two FIRs on April 28 following the notice by the Supreme Court.

Earlier this year, prominent wrestlers came forward to lead a protest against the WFI chief, following which the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur announced the formation of an ‘oversight committee’ to probe allegations against the WFI, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and some coaches. The name of Wrestling Federation of India Assistant Secretary Vinod Tomar is also accused in the FIR.

“Statements of Assistant Secretary WFI Vinod Tomar were also recorded. Vinod Tomar is also an accused in Delhi Police’s FIR. Brij Bhushan Sharan has asked to collect some video evidence and mobile data in his clarification. SIT will also interrogate Brij Bhushan further,” said Delhi Police.WFI president Brij Bhushan has denied the allegations levelled against him by wrestlers.On April 23 this year the ace grapplers- Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshee Mallik- returned to the protest site at Jantar Mantar, claiming that six women wrestlers, and a minor, filed a sexual harassment complaint against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Connaught Place Police Station but Delhi Police did not register an FIR.

Telangana Police on Monday detained Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Telangana Party (YSRTP) chief YS Sharmila after she was seen manhandling some police personnel during a protest.

The TSPSC on March 15 had cancelled the Assistant Engineers (AE) exam held on March 5, following allegations of the question paper leak.Earlier on March 31, YS Sharmila was detained by the police before she reached the Telangana Public Service Commission (TSPSC) office in Hyderabad to hold a protest there regarding the paper leak issue.The Special Investigation Team of Telangana Police investigating the TSPSC exam paper leak case had summoned State BJP chief Bandi Sanjay.

“SIT did not have the courage to issue notices to BRS leaders in the paper leakage case,” Bandi Sanjay said while commenting on the summons issued by the Special Investigation Team of Telangana Police in connection to the TSPSC exam paper leak case.

SIT officials on March 25 arrived at Sanjay’s Banjara Hills residence in Hyderabad to serve a notice to him in connection with the TSPSC leak issue.

UP SIT : Crime scene of Atiq, Ashraf murder case would be recreated

The crime scenes of Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf will be recreated as part of the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) ongoing investigation, according to sources.The Uttar Pradesh police announced the formation of two special investigating teams (SITs) to look into the gangster’s killings on Sunday, almost two days after three people posing as media personnel shot and killed gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in Prayagraj.

The first SIT, to be headed by Additional DCP (crime) Satish Chandra, has been formed to probe the murder case registered at Shahganj police station, according to an order issued by Prayagraj Commissioner of Police, Ramit Sharma on Sunday.

The second SIT has been put together to supervise the first. This SIT will be headed by ADG Prayagraj Zone Bhanu Bhaskar, and would also have Prayagraj Commissioner of Police and the director of Forensic Science Laboratory as its members, stated an order issued by the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police, RK Vishwakarma on Sunday.

Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf Ahmad were shot dead by men posing as journalists on Saturday night, while they were being taken for a medical examination in Prayagraj.
Both the gangsters collapsed at the spot after being shot close to point-blank range.
UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the incident and ordered the setting up of a judicial commission in the matter.All three assailants — Arun Maurya, Sunny Singh and Lovelesh Tiwari — were sent to 14-day judicial custody by the district court on Sunday.

Supreme Court to hear plea in Bihar’s Chhapra hooch tragedy

In the Bihar hooch tragedy in which 70 people lost their lives, the Supreme Court agreed to hear a petition on 9 January. After consuming spurious liquor in Chhapra, Bihar 70 people died.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud on Tuesday agreed to hear the case next Monday for an early hearing.

Meanwhile, seeking formulation of a national action plan to curb the manufacturing, trading, and sale of illicit liquor the plea was filed by Aryavarta Mahasabha Foundation through advocate Pawan Prakash Pathak.

The PIL also suggested adequately compensating the victims’ families because of the State government.

“Pass direction that the independent Special Investigation Team may be formed by the respondent and an independent probe be conducted in this hooch tragedy for effective steps as per law of the land,” the plea stated.

Moreover, the PIL said after consuming spurious liquor many people died in states like Gujrat, Punjab, and Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka in recent years.

However, on 31 December 2022, one accused was arrested from Dwarka and was identified as Ram Babu Mahto.

Bihar hooch tragedy: PIL in SC seeks SIT probe

In the Supreme Court, a petition has been filed on Friday seeking an independent SIT probe in the Bihar hooch tragedy. Earlier on Friday, the plea was mentioned before a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and was refused to hear. “If it’s so important, you should have listed it. However important the matter is, discipline is in my court. Sorry,” CJI Chandrachud said. The plea was filed by Aryavarta Mahasabha Foundation through advocate Pawan Prakash Pathak. On Wednesday, many people in Bihar lost their lives due to the consumption of spurious liquor hooch.

SIT to file charge sheet in Ankita Bhandari murder case

A charge sheet will be filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) against the three accused this week in the Ankita Bhandari murder case.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) P Renuka, the SIT in charge said, “SIT has almost completed the probe. We’ll file the chargesheet this week. We’ve applied for the NARCO test of the 3 accused, we’ll do it if the court permits.”

Earlier on 24 September Ankita’s body was recovered from the Chilla canal in Rishikesh. Ankita used to work as a receptionist at a resort run by Pulkit Arya, the son of expelled BJP leader Vinod Arya.

Meanwhile, for the six days missing report was filed and later police officials found her dead body. In connection with the Ankita Bhandari murder case, Pulkit Arya was arrested for allegedly pushing her into the canal.

Later in case two more people Ankit Gupta and Saurabh Bhaskar were also arrested. After the incident, the BJP government led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami promptly expelled Vinod Arya.

Addressing the press conference Chief Spokesperson of the Uttarakhand Police headquarters Additional Director General (ADG) V Murgeshan said, “An application will be filed in the court for the narco test of Ankita’s killers, including the main accused Pulkit Arya. Things will be clearer after the narco test is done. Our investigation is almost complete.”

Moreover, in the Nainital High Court in November Ankita’s mother, Sona Devi and father Virender Singh Bhandari filed a petition. The petition was filed to seek inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the case.

Furthermore, against the three accused the Pushkar Singh Dhami government has invoked the Gangster Act.

Engineer abducted, gang-raped in Jharkhand

An engineer was allegedly abducted and gang-raped by ten unidentified individuals on Thursday night in the West Singhbhum police station in Jharkhand’s Mufassil police station.

The victim, who was in her twenties, was riding a scooter with a friend to the airport area when they were overcome by the accused. After beating her friend, they led her to a nearby abandoned location where they gang-raped her.

A special investigative team (SIT) has been established to apprehend the suspects, according to West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Shekhar.

“The situation falls under the purview of Mufassil police station. The family of the friend who was with the survivor and was able to flee called the police. An SIT has been created, and Sadar sub divisional police officer is leading it. We are pursuing some leads that we have. A few others have also been interrogated,” added Shekhar. The survivor, a Jhinkpani-area resident of the district, apparently works from home and resides in a rented flat in Chaibasa, the district’s administrative centre

“What happened in Dumka is very shocking and unacceptable”; says West Bengal Minister Shashi Panja

West Bengal Minister for Women and Child Development, Shashi Panja on Wednesday condemned the Dumka incident and said it is horrifying.

Earlier on 23 August, Shahrukh allegedly poured petrol on a 16-year-old girl Ankita through the window while she was sleeping and set her ablaze. She died on 28 August after fighting for five days in a hospital.

“What happened in Dumka is very shocking and unacceptable. The way she was burnt is horrifying. We want the culprit to be punished and Law should take its own course,” Shashi Panja said.

Meanwhile, a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been ordered by the Jharkhand government to oversee the investigation. After severe protests by locals, the Jharkhand government took this step and the Superintendent of Police will head the investigation.

However, after severe protests in Dumka Section 144 has been enforced. The Dumka police have arrested the accused Shahrukh and one of his accomplices.

“Section 144 will remain enforced. As of now, the situation is under control and peaceful. A decision to remove section 144 will be taken after reviewing the situation. In order to prevent riot-mongering in the city, the administration has been carefully monitoring social media for any social media posts,” Ravi Shankar Shukla, Deputy Commissioner, Dumka said.
