Kathakar International storytellers festival debuts in Shimla with global tales and musical legends

The Kathakar International Storytellers Festival took place at the historic Gothic Hall, Gaiety Theatre in Shimla. Organized by Nivesh, HHACH, and Babaji Music in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Tourism (Government of India), the festival is curated and produced by the Gehlot sisters — Rachna, Prarthana, and Shaguna.

The event featured performances by renowned international storytellers Usifu Jaloh (Sierra Leone) and Polina Tserkasova (Estonia). Alongside these performances, veteran musician Shantanu Moitra engaged in a lively conversation with singer Mohit Chauhan during the Kisse Kahaniyan aur Matargashti session, moderated by Prarthana Gahilote. The festival also showcased a musical performance by Satpal Wadali and Group from Punjab.

Expressing her excitement about the festival, Estonian storyteller Polina Tserkasova shared a captivating folktale about a hunter who rescues a trapped white swan. The swan, later revealed to be a woman, secretly cares for the hunter in his absence. Upon discovering her true identity, the hunter gives her the choice to leave or stay as his wife. She chooses to stay, and they live happily, raising a son together. One day, as other swans call her to the clouds, she refuses, choosing to remain with her family forever.

Usifu Jaloh began his performance with a song, captivating the audience with his storytelling. He then sang a Hindi and Punjabi song, including “Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jaana Sanam,” “Tum Paas Aaye,” and “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and many others”

In his story he narrated, that a woman wanted to cook for her husband but struggled to pick vegetables from a tree. She asked her husband to cut the tree, and when he chopped a branch, it magically transformed into a man.

Satpal Wadali started his performance with the first song “Sanson ki Mala pe simrun mein Pi ka Naam”, then “Tujhe Dekha to aisa laga jaise meri eed ho gayee, then he sung “Tu maane ya na maane, assan taan tenu yaar maneya”. Then he sung “Yeh jo halka halka suroor hai”, Lagan lagi tumse man ki lagan, Lal Meri bat rakhiyo bhala jhule lalan

Mohit Chauhan, the festival’s Chief Patron and Cultural Ambassador of Mongolia to India, expressed his joy at bringing the festival to his home state. “Himachal is my home, and it’s a wonderful experience to see the Kathakar Festival here. This festival is close to my heart as it revives traditional storytelling, allowing people to explore different cultures, values, and traditions. Through Kathakar, we not only tell stories but also discuss their significance in everyday life, cinema, and music.” He also said that the Storytellers Festival has been organized for the past 15 years, but this is the first time it is being held in Shimla. He mentioned that storytelling is an art, just like how we used to listen to stories from our grandparents in childhood.

Famous music composer Shantanu Moitra stated that storytelling encompasses numerous tales, and the mountains too hold many stories. These stories can be taken across the country and abroad. He added that emotions in stories are the same worldwide; only the language differs.

During the discussion session, Mohit Chauhan shared that his journey began with superhit songs like Ab Ke Sawan and has led him to where he is today. He also mentioned that he hails from Himachal Pradesh, where many hidden stories exist, and music is the best medium to narrate these stories.

Prarthana Gahilote, Director of Kathakar, highlighted the festival’s milestone: “Celebrating 15 glorious years, we are hosting the festival across four cities—Delhi, Shimla, Jodhpur, and Jaipur. Over 14 years and 18 editions, Kathakar has become synonymous with Indian and international storytelling, both in India and globally.” She further added, “Shimla residents got to watch a unique treat of stories, music, and melodies. Two music legends, Shantanu Moitra and Mohit Chauhan, shared the stage, which is a treat for the audience, they offered insights into the evolution of music, storytelling, and adapting to changing times.”

On Christmas Eve, Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, saw a wave of disappointment among tourists as the eagerly awaited midnight prayers at Christ Church were unexpectedly canceled on Tuesday.
Visitors who had gathered at the iconic church on Mall Road to attend or witness the prayers were left dismayed when, as the clock struck 12, the service did not begin. Many had specifically planned their trips to Shimla to attend this event.
Despite their frustration, many tourists decided to embrace the spirit of Christmas by exploring Shimla, enjoying its festive decorations, and participating in other activities. For Pranav Pandey, the hope of entering Christ Church and praying remained strong, reflecting a deep spiritual connection.
The incident highlighted the importance of clear communication and planning for events that attract visitors from across the country. While disappointed, the tourists remained resilient, finding solace in the picturesque beauty of Shimla and holding on to hope for future blessings.

Saaransh, a tourist from Bhopal, shared his disappointment, saying, “We thoroughly enjoyed exploring Shimla, but we were looking forward to the midnight prayer at Christ Church. When we arrived, we were told the prayers were not happening. After waiting in the cold for a while, we had no choice but to return to our hotel.”
Many tourists had arrived hours before midnight, eagerly anticipating the annual tradition of midnight prayers, complete with hymns, prayers, and a spiritual atmosphere. The cancellation, however, left them disillusioned.
Pranav Pandey, another tourist who had travelled all the way from Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, expressed even deeper disappointment. He said, “I came to Shimla solely for Christ Church. I travelled over 1,500 kilometres to witness the midnight prayer, but I was heartbroken to find out that it wasn’t taking place. Despite the setback, I have decided not to leave Shimla until I enter Christ Church, seek blessings, and pray.

Even if it takes until tomorrow or the day after, I will not leave without fulfilling my purpose.” He said.
Many tourists had planned their schedules around this event, enduring the harsh winter cold in Shimla for the experience. Adding to their disappointment was the lack of prior communication about the cancellation. Visitors stated that they were unaware of any changes and only found out upon arriving at the church.

Despite new rinks opening up in Ladakh, for instance, the Shimla rink has an old-world charm to it. Organising secretary of the Shimla Ice Skating Club Rajat Malhotra says, “After December 20, when tourist inflow is high, almost 80 percent of visitors are keen to visit the rink. It is one of the major attractions in Shimla.

However, the rink is facing challenges such as old infrastructure and lack of support from the government. With sufficient support, the local communities and the management of the rink hope it will regain its former status.

This year, the season kicked off earlier than usual because of favorable weather conditions. Registrations are gradually increasing as schools are now closing. Our main attractions include the winter carnival and activities at the Gymkhana, scheduled from December 25 to 31.”

Winter Carnival and Future Events

Moreover, the winter carnival is the highlight of the season. It will feature fun activities and skating games. Although no national events are planned this year, Singh remains hopeful. “The ongoing dry weather gives us hope for an extended skating season this year,” he added.

Furthermore, Malhotra noted that the rink draws many tourists. “After December 20, when tourist numbers rise, nearly 80 per cent of visitors make it a point to visit the rink,” he explained.

In addition, the rink will host ice hockey trials in January, along with the selection of national players for the Khelo India program. For many, the rink is more than just a place to skate. It’s a place for memories and growth. Young skater Aryabhatt said, “I’ve been skating since I was five. Holidays mean ice skating for us. Even after sessions end, I never feel like leaving.”

Similarly, Purana Dogra, a professional skater and coach, shared her experience. “This rink has given me some of my best memories, from childhood to now. Ice hockey, being a team sport, has been one of my greatest joys,” she said.

The Need for Better Infrastructure

However, Dogra pointed out the rink’s need for improved infrastructure. “The rink lacks adequate government support. This is the only natural rink where children can stay active and learn skating,” she said. She believes a permanent rink would offer more opportunities.

Call for Government Investment

Furthermore, Dogra urged the government to invest in a full-sized, permanent rink. “The seasonal changes are shortening the skating sessions. With changing weather patterns, the season is shrinking,” she explained. She also mentioned the lack of funding for ice hockey in India.

In light of this, Dogra believes that a year-round rink would allow continuous training. “I coach children now, and I see immense potential in them. With government support, this rink could transform into a world-class facility,” she added.

A British-era water tank, constructed in the 1880s, lies beneath The Ridge in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh’s capital. This iconic tourist destination, known for its colonial heritage and picturesque views, is a no-vehicle zone due to its sinking foundation. Emergency vehicles were the only exception until November 28, when two heavy trucks were seen driving and parked on the fragile area.

A video circulating on social media shows the trucks parked with flashing lights in front of the Christ Church, a neo-Gothic landmark predating the water tank. The footage also captures the trucks moving along a street near Mall Road. Sharing the video on X (formerly Twitter), user Nihkil Saini expressed outrage, “Have you been to Shimla and visited the iconic Ridge? This historic spot, with a 100-year-old water tank beneath, is sinking. Events are banned, ambulances aren’t allowed—but yesterday, heavy trucks rolled in, crushing all restrictions.

“The truck driver even made a reel to show off. Is this the govt’s way of protecting heritage? Forget maintaining the legacy; they’re actively destroying what’s left.”

Social Media Backlash

The video ignited a wave of anger online. “Trucks on The Ridge? This is absolutely ridiculous!” commented one user.

The Ridge is more than a tourist hotspot connecting Lakkar Bazaar and Scandal Point; it serves a critical function. The area is built atop a water tank that supplies a significant portion of Shimla’s water. However, subsidence has been an ongoing issue due to illegal tree felling and haphazard construction.

In 2008, this structural vulnerability led to the collapse of approximately 20 shops in the Tibetan market located beneath the Ridge. Former deputy mayor of Shimla and CPI(M) leader Tikender Singh Panwar highlighted the risks, stating, “There is a huge water tank under The Ridge and such a huge structure cannot be built here as it could put pressure on the area.”

Panwar filed an FIR against Home Department officials, the police, and the truck owners, accusing them of violating a Himachal Pradesh High Court order prohibiting vehicles in the area, according to The Tribune.

Shimla’s Mayor Surender Chauhan visited the site on Friday, inspecting the damage and ordering the removal of “illegal stalls” above the water tank. He emphasized, “Such structures cannot be built above a major water tank,” underlining the need to safeguard the area’s structural integrity and heritage.

This incident has reignited debates about heritage conservation and urban planning in one of India’s most cherished hill stations.

Alvi criticized the Congress-led Himachal Pradesh government for not addressing the uproar over the demolition of the allegedly illegally constructed Sanjauli mosque. He remarked, “If any mosque is being demolished in the state even after the Congress is in power, then what is the difference between the Congress and the BJP?” He emphasized, “That place belongs to Waqf. Even a minister in the govt (Himachal Pradesh) has said that it belongs to Waqf. It’s an old mosque and there is no question of demolishing it. It’s the responsibility of the CM to take legal action against all those creating a ruckus against the mosque.”

The internal strife within Congress intensified when Himachal Pradesh Minister Anirudh Singh, also a Congress leader, accused the Shimla mosque of being constructed illegally. Speaking in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, Singh called for an investigation into the Sanjauli Masjid’s construction, alleging that the mosque was built without proper authorization. “They started the construction without approval. It was an illegal structure. First, one floor was built, then the rest followed,” Singh stated.

In Himachal Pradesh, a cloudburst and subsequent flood occurred in the Damrali Nallah area under the Taklech sub-tehsil of Rampur sub-division following heavy rainfall. Shimla Temple Innovates With Eco-Friendly Leaf Plates For Langar Service

To blend tradition with sustainability, the Shimla administration has introduced eco-friendly leaf plates for serving langar at the Tara Devi Temple. This initiative, supported by the National Rural Livelihood Mission and managed by the District Rural Development Authority, aims to promote self-employment and preserve cultural heritage.

The leaf plates, made from Taur, Tremal, and Sal leaves, are crafted by women from the Saksham Cluster Level Federation in the Sunni block. Initially, 5,000 plates have been ordered in the first phase, highlighting the administration’s commitment to supporting local economies and empowering women through small-scale production activities.

Shimla: Massive Landslide Blocks Himachal Pradesh Highway Amid Heavy Rains

A significant landslide has blocked National Highway 707 near Rohana in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, following intense rainfall in the area. The highway, crucial for connecting Hatkoti and Paonta Sahib, had to be shut down due to the incident. A video capturing the landslide shows a large section of a hill collapsing onto the road, obstructing it with huge rocks.

Recent heavy downpours have led to the closure of over 80 roads across Himachal Pradesh, with districts like Mandi, Kullu, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Kangra being the most severely affected. The Shimla meteorological office has issued a ‘yellow alert’, predicting heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning until July 12. Concerns about flash floods loom large over Kangra, Kullu, Kinnaur, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Shimla districts within the next 24 hours.

Despite the average July rainfall being 35 mm, the state has already received 72.1 mm, marking an excess of 106 percent. In temperature updates, Kukumseri in Lahaul and Spiti recorded a minimum night temperature of 11.6 degrees Celsius, while Chamba saw the highest daytime temperature at 34.1 degrees Celsius.

In neighboring Uttarakhand, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also forecasted heavy to extremely heavy rains in the upcoming days. According to the forecast, “Thunderstorms with lightning and intense to very intense spells are likely on July 8-9 in the hills and plains of the state.”

HP: Bank Official Arrested For Embezzling ₹3.8 Crore From Shimla’s Private Bank

In the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh, a relationship manager with a private bank has been detained for embezzling ₹3.8 crore from 68 accounts to feed his online gaming addiction in Shimla.

The culprit Arvind Kumar was detained late on Thursday after police found out that the funds meant for mutual fund investments were diverted to online gaming app.

Furthermore, kumar also persuaded customers to invest money, whose amount ranged from ₹1 lakh to ₹40 lakh. With the help of fake bonds, he promised returns triple their investment.

But instead of giving returns, he utilized those funds to support his online gaming activities.

How This Modus Operandi Was Exposed?

Later this scam got exposed, when customers did not their required returns and complained to senior bank officials.

Even though this incident happened in 2022, but this extensive operation was exposed after a detailed probe.

After former bank manager Sumit Dogra lodged FIR at Chhota Shimla police station, it quickly led to Arvind Kumar’s arrest.

Currently, the police have recorded the statements of 70 accounts holders, who were the victims of this scam.

Passengers escape fatal accident as bike hits bus in Shimla

A private bus was struck by a speeding bike on Tuesday near the Boileauganj crossing in Shimla; passengers escaped narrowly and a serious accident was avoided. The bus held twelve or fifteen people in total. Everything is said to be safe. A private bus had an accident, according to Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi. On the bus there were fifteen or twenty persons in total. Nobody is in danger. The bus went off the road close to the Boileauganj crossing in Shimla after a biker struck it and the driver lost control of the vehicle. After suffering injuries, the biker was transported to the hospital of Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC).

Shimla: Tibetans-in-exile celebrate Democracy Day

Tibetans in exile in Shimla celebrated the 63rd anniversary of ‘Democracy Day’ on Saturday. The Central Tibetan Administration’s office arranged a program to commemorate the occasion.

The elected representatives of the Tibetan government-in-exile’s local assembly, officers of the Central Tibetan Administration, schoolchildren, and representatives of Tibetan NGOs took part in the Shimla Democracy Day program.

Tibetans commemorate the day by singing the Tibetan and Indian national anthems and praying to the 14th Dalai Lama. The Tibetan deputies and officers also recited the declarations of the Tibetan parliament in exile and Kashag on this occasion.

“The His Holiness the Dalai Lama is a person who has given us the right to practice democracy in exile. As soon as he took the political role of the Tibetan he tried to give democracy.

“Later he denounced his political powers and said that the elected representatives of Tibet should Take the lead,” said Teswang Phuntsok, Chief Representative Officer of Tibetan administration at Shimla.

“We are celebrating 63rd Democracy Day across the world except from inside Tibet. We also pay our gratitude to His Holiness the Dalai Lama who has set up this democratic system for us. We have a democratic system like an independent nation. In celebration of this special day we all Tibetans hope to return home to Tibet one day,” he added.

Himachal rain fury: Shimla landslide toll rises to 17, three people still missing

Seven days after the tragic landslide that occurred in the Summer Hill area of Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district on August 14, security and disaster relief forces kept up their search efforts. With one more body found by rescue workers on Sunday, the death toll from the Monday temple collapse incident has risen to 17.

“Today is the 7th day of the search and rescue operation at Summer Hill area. So far, we have recovered 17 bodies, and we are searching for other three victims. Teams of SDRF, NDRF and Indian Army are present at the spot,” Roop Sharan, an inspector with NDRF said.
“We are putting in our best efforts & hoping to retrieve the other victims,” he added.
Virender Thakur, a local counsellor from the Summer Hill ward of Shimla Municipal Corporation said that rescue teams deployed at the site are carrying out the search operations.
“The search operations seem difficult for the teams out at the site, the machines brought over here for the rescue efforts are unable to reach down the site, so all the rescue work is being conducted manually by the rescue teams,” Thakur pointed out.

On August 14, a landslide caused the historic Shivabari temple in the Summer Hill neighborhood to collapse. As 20–21 people were reported missing following the incident, several people perished and others were trapped under the debris. As the joint team of district police, Army, Sdrf, NDRF, and fire department deployed in segments continued their search operation for the sixth consecutive day on Saturday, officials involved in the search operations had said that so far 16 bodies had been retrieved from debris.

Rescue operation underway after landslide strikes Shimla’s Summer Hill area

On 16 August, Wednesday, a massive landslide was reported in Shimla’s Summer Hill area, according to an official. As soon as the word of the incident got out, a search and rescue operation was launched and sniffer dogs and rescuers were present at the spot at the time of filing this report.

There were no reports of any casualties or injuries when the incident occurred, however, further updates are still awaited.

Earlier, on 15 August, Tuesday, the Indian Air Force airdropped 18 army soldiers in a single ride to facilitate the rescue operation in the affected areas following landslides in Shimla.

On Tuesday, the Indian Air Force issued a statement saying, “A Chinook helicopter of Western Air Command airlifted 18 Indian Army personnel and a 3-Ton Mini Dozer in a single sortie for rescue efforts in areas affected by landslides near Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla today.”

Continuous heavy rainfalls are carrying on to wreak havoc in several parts of Himachal Pradesh, resulting in severe damage to buildings and properties.

On Tuesday, 5 to 7 houses collapsed in Shimla’s Krishna Nagar area after a landslide. As per the officials, some residents were suspected to be trapped in the debris, and NDRF, SDRF, and state police personnel continued the rescue operations.

Shimla SP Sanjeev Gandhi said, “Our primary focus is to rescue more and more people. One casualty has been reported so far. All agencies are working to save lives. About 10-15 houses have been vacated and the occupants shifted to safe places. The loss of property is yet to be ascertained.”

Himachal rains: NH-5 blocked in Shimla and Kinnaur districts following landslides

Landslides caused by heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh have blocked sections of National Highway-5 at Broni Nallah and Khaneri in the Shimla district and Kaksthal in the Kinnaur district, according to officials. Images of the blocked sections of the highway in two Himachal districts were shared by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Heavy rainstorms in the Shimla district earlier on Wednesday prevented travel on the National Highway in the Jeori and Broni Nallah areas close to Jhakri.

On Tuesday, several houses were damaged after a cloudburst in Kullu’s Panchnala.
Deputy Commissioner, Kullu, Ashutosh Garg said a total of five houses were completely damaged in the cloudburst.
“Five houses were completely damaged and 15 partially damaged in the cloudburst. The Bhuntar-Gadsa Maniyar road was also damaged. Two bridges were also swept away in the cloudburst,” he said.

Previously, landslides in the area had caused National Highway-5 to be blocked at three locations in the Shimla and Kinnaur districts. Landslides at Nog Kenchi near Kumarsain, Broni Nallah near Jhakri Village in the Shimla district, and near Nigulsari Village in the Kinnaur district reportedly blocked the National Highway-5. Earlier on Sunday, the Shimla district’s roadblocks were updated on Twitter by the Himachal Pradesh Traffic, Tourist, and Railways Police.

HP Traffic, Tourist and Railways Police tweeted that the NH 705 Theog-Hatkoti road was closed at Bagra due to a landslide, as well as the Kotkhai-Baghi and Fagu-Kot darbar roads. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert on June 22 and predicted that eight districts in Himachal Pradesh would experience heavy rainfall.

2 injured,3 killed in house collapse amid heavy downpour in Himachal’s Shimla

In Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, a family’s home collapsed on Sunday, killing three members of the family and injuring two others, according to the police. Officials said that the incident took place in Kotgarh village of Shimla on Sunday morning. The victims were taken out of the debris after a rescue operation and rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared them brought dead.
“The deceased have been identified as Anil, Kiran, and Swapnil, and their bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. We are further looking into the incident,” Shimla Superintendent of Police, Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi said.
Earlier, a flash flood and a landslide occurred in Gramphu village and Chota Dharra in the wee hours of Sunday. No casualties were reported in the incident.
“District Emergency Operation Center Lahaul Spiti informed an incident of Flash Flood and Landslide reported along the AEC BRO 94 RCC, NH 505 (Sumdo Kaza-Gramphu) which is blocked at different locations between Gramphu to Chota Dharra,” an official statement issued by Himachal Pradesh State Emergency Operations Centre (HPSEOC), informed.
HP SEOC said a group of 30 college students were rescued safely after they were struck on the road due to a landslide.
“A Group of 30 Collage Students travelling on Bhavna Travelers (2 Travelers’ vehicle) from Spiti to Manali. They were stuck on the road due to road blocking. All 30 College students were rescued safely,” the statement read further.
Men and resources would be deployed to clear the debris once the weather improves, officials informed.
Earlier on Thursday, heavy rains wreaked havoc in parts of Himachal Pradesh with two women being buried alive under debris following a landslide in Kullu district, while shops and vehicles were washed away and highways blocked by flash floods in other places.
The India Meteorological Department on Saturday issued a red alert for seven districts of the state and an orange alert for three districts for the next 48 hours as the state continued to receive heavy rainfall.
IMD also issued alerts for flash floods, landslides in the state. For the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Una, Hamirpur, and Bilaspur, a red alert has been issued. The majority of the state will experience rain. According to IMD HP deputy director Bui Lal, an orange alert has been issued for the Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur districts. He added that the state government had received a forecast update and that a yellow alert had been issued for the Lahaul and Spiti districts.

3 fires in 2 weeks expose fire safety in Shimla.

Shimla : Three incidents of fire in two weeks in Shimla city have once again raised concern over safety in the Himachal Pradesh capital. Two shops, one house, and a Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) godown were gutted in a massive fire that broke out in Dhalli in the suburbs of Shimla around 12.05 am Thursday, officials said. A labourer from Nepal, who sustained minor burn injuries while sleeping in a shop, was rushed to Indira Gandhi Medical College Hospital (IGMCH) Shimla. He is currently under treatment.

President Droupadi Murmu arrives in Shimla on four-day visit

On Tuesday, President Droupadi Murmu arrived on a 4-day visit to Shimla.
Droupadi Murmu was accorded a guard of honour after she landed at the Kalyani Helipad in Chharabra. Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu greeted her.

Shimla: 3 killed as car rolls off road

Three people were killed, and one was injured after a car rolled down nearly 900 metres off the road in Himachal Pradesh’s Bhong area. Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu who took oath on Sunday assumed the charge of the office at the state civil secretariat in Shimla on Monday.

After taking charge Himachal Pradesh Sukhu said, Cabinet formation will be done as per high command guidelines.

“Today I am taking charge as the CM of the state. All MLAs, Deputy CM and senior members of the party will work for the welfare of the state,” CM Sukhu said.

After BJP’s Prem Kumar Dhumal Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is the second chief minister from the Hamirpur district.

Earlier on 8 December, Congress won 40 seats in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly polls.

“Cabinet formation will also be done soon as per the guidelines of the Congress high command,” CM Sukhu said.

Meanwhile, on Sunday Sukhu took oath as the 15th Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh at Raj Bhavan, Shimla at 1:30 pm. Sukhu is a four-time MLA and former chief of Congress in the state and is a loyalist of the Gandhi family.

Moreover, Sukhu long years in the organization has a vast network in the hill state, and is an affable and approachable leader. From 2013 to 2019 Sukhu was the party’s state unit president and not in the liking of the party’s tallest leader Virbhadra Singh, a six-time Chief Minister.

However, Sukhu has always promoted and groomed younger Congress leaders in Himachal Pradesh. Sukh is the first Congress leader from “lower Himachal” and has come to the top post.

Furthermore, belonging to a middle-class family Sukhu has come a long way in politics. In politics from his student days, Sukhu was active and also fought the election as an NSUI candidate. After this Sukhu also won elections for Shimla Municipal Corporation and in 2003 Sukhu won the assembly election from Nadaun.

Congress Himachal MLAs to decide chief minister in Shimla

In the Himachal Pradesh Assembly election Congress registered a win and to decide chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, MLAs will meet on Friday in Shimla.

Meanwhile, at 3 pm Himachal Congress Legislature Party meeting will be held at State Congress Headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan.

In the meeting, Rajeev Shukla, in charge of the Himachal Pradesh Congress, and supervisors Bhupesh Baghel and Bhupendra Hooda will also be present.

After five years Congress returned to power in Himachal Pradesh and on Thursday won 40 seats in the 68-member assembly and BJP won 25 seats.

However, after the defeat, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur resigned and said, “I want to thank Prime Minister and central leadership (for their support) during the last five years. We’ll stand for the development of the state irrespective of politics. We’ll analyze our shortcomings and improve during the next term.”

Furthermore, Rajiv Shukla who is in charge of Himachal Pradesh said 10 guarantees in the state will be implemented.

“It’s the victory of people of the state. People voted for change and against unemployment and inflation. We’ll be united and there won’t be any factionalism in our party. We met party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and had a discussion regarding our next step,” Shukla said.

Henceforth Pratibha Singh who is Himachal Pradesh Congress chief “there is no need to fear (poaching)” as people have given us a mandate.

“We can meet (our MLAs) anywhere including Chandigarh or in the state. Those who have won will be with us and we will form the government,” Singh said.

“It is a very emotional moment for me as I can see the same kind of support from people as it was for the late Virbhadra Singh. Chandigarh is an easily accessible meeting point for MLAs and we are not worried about poaching,” Singh said.

A history-sheeter has been arrested by the Shimla Police with 16.80 gms Charas and 1.32 gms Heroin on Tuesday.HI

According to the Shimla Police, “The accused Mahaveer, a resident of Shimla, is a history-sheeter and a total of 11 cases have been registered against him in different Police stations.”

Under sections 20 and 21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (ND&PS) Act an FIR has been registered against him at West Police Station in Shimla.

Earlier on Sunday Shimla Police’s Special Intelligence Unit (SIU) recovered 127.56 grams of Chitta (heroin) from a person.

Shimla: Police recover about 800 gm narcotics, accused held

Police officials have recovered 802 grams of narcotics Charas from the accused named Diwan Chand who hails from Banjar, Kullu.

Under section 20 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (ND&PS) Act at Kumarsain Police Station the case has been filed.

However further investigation into the matter is underway.

Earlier on Thursday, the Shimla police arrested one accused from which 600 gms of opium and 98.60 gms of charas were recovered by police.

Meanwhile, the arrested accused has been identified as Hum Bahadur and police also recovered Rs 71,000 cash along with 600 gm opium, and 98.60 gm charas.

However, to address the drug trafficking issue prevailing in the state Director General of Himachal Pradesh Police, Sanjay Kundu, met the DG of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), SN Pradhan in Delhi met on Wednesday.

Taking to Twitter Himachal DGP tweeted, “Discussed a joint strategy to ensure drug-free Himachal Pradesh”.
