</excerpt>

Amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif found himself at the center of an unexpected social media storm, not for policy, but for a typo. While attempting to issue a formal condemnation of Israel’s airstrikes on Iran, a viral screenshot alleged that Sharif accidentally typed “I condom” instead of “I condemn” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The post reportedly read, “I condom the attack on Iran by Israel…”, triggering an avalanche of memes, GIFs, and internet jokes. The slip turned a geopolitical flashpoint into a global punchline. ‘I Condom’, Pakistan’s Prime Minister mistakenly wrote ‘condom’ instead of ‘condemn’ in the support of Iran. Later, he rectified it,” one user wrote, attaching the viral screenshot.

Social media users quickly ran with the mistake, calling it the “typo of the year” and a “historic moment when autocorrect struck harder than diplomacy.” Hashtags and parody versions of the phrase like “I condom this too” took over platforms like X and Instagram, as users poked fun at the PM’s alleged blunder.

I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, today’s unprovoked attack on Iran by Israel.
While some laughed it off, others questioned the authenticity of the screenshot. “Typo or not, that tweet is unforgettable now,” said one user. Another quipped, “Facepalm moment of 2025.”

Interestingly, the original post could not be located, raising doubts about whether the typo was real or photoshopped. AI tool Grok, when asked to retrieve the deleted tweet, responded: “Yeah, it seems the typo was real. Pakistan’s PM meant to say ‘condemn’ but wrote ‘condom’ in a post about Israel’s attack on Iran. Social media ran with it… but official reports corrected it…”

Meanwhile, credible media outlets like Radio Pakistan and The Express Tribune confirmed that Shehbaz Sharif had officially used the correct term “condemn” in his statements on June 13, showing solidarity with Iran after the Israeli airstrikes that reportedly targeted nuclear facilities and killed senior military personnel.

The episode unfolded as Israel and Iran engaged in reciprocal airstrikes within 24 hours, raising tensions in the Middle East. Yet, in the online world, Sharif’s typo momentarily shifted attention from war headlines to word blunders.

</excerpt>

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appealed to former US President Donald Trump to help facilitate peace talks between India and Pakistan. He made this request during an event at the US embassy in Islamabad. Sharif praised Trump for what he called a helpful role in calming tensions with India in the past. However, India has previously denied any third-party involvement in its talks with Pakistan. According to ANI, Sharif asked Washington to help start a full-fledged dialogue between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

Repeating Bilawal’s Praise for Trump

Sharif echoed a similar statement made earlier by former Pakistani foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari. Bhutto had claimed Trump played a big part in reducing hostilities between the two countries. Bhutto had said, “On 10 different occasions, he has taken credit for facilitating the ceasefire between India and Pakistan – and rightly so. He deserves that credit because it was his efforts that helped make the ceasefire possible. So, if the US is willing to help Pakistan in maintaining this ceasefire, it is reasonable to expect that an American role in arranging a comprehensive dialogue would also be beneficial for us.”

India Rejects Mediation, Cites Ongoing Threats

However, India has made its stance clear. It does not support third-party mediation, especially on sensitive issues like Kashmir.

While visiting the US, a delegation of Indian MPs led by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor responded strongly to Sharif’s remarks. This team is one of seven sent by the Indian government under the initiative titled Operation Sindoor.

Tharoor stated, “I think the US has understood for some time now that India has a very clear position that there will be no talks with a gun pointed at our head… The problem is that we will not deal with people who are pointing a gun at our heads.”

Tharoor Uses Sharp Analogy to Explain India’s Stand

Tharoor further explained India’s reasoning with a vivid metaphor. He said, “If your neighbour unleashes his Rottweilers to bite your children and in fact to do worse to your children, and then says, let’s talk… You’re not going to talk to people who are pointing guns at your temples. It’s not going to happen.”

Pakistan’s Victim Card Dismissed

Tharoor also criticised Pakistan’s claim that it was also a victim of terrorism. He questioned the source of the problem.

He added, “This (Pakistan) delegation is going around saying we are also victims of terrorism… Whose fault is that? As Hillary Clinton famously said 10 years ago: You can’t breed vipers in your backyard and expect them to bite only your neighbours.”

Tharoor blamed Pakistan’s own policies for its internal terror issues. He said the country must reflect deeply before denying responsibility and blaming others.

Tejasvi Surya Also Slams Pakistan’s Claims

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, also part of the Indian delegation, criticised Pakistan’s peace claims. He said it was ironic for Islamabad to talk about peace while encouraging conflict. He remarked, “Bhutto has been calling his delegation a peace delegation, and it is quite ironic… It’s like the Devil quoting from the scriptures.”

Surya also mocked Pakistan’s military and leadership, saying, “For a country that is trying to create fake heroes by promoting failed generals to field marshal, they don’t know what true leaders look like.”

He added, “Pakistan has been surviving on cheap Chinese imports, including military hardware, which spectacularly failed on the battlefield… So perhaps it is hard for them to digest high-quality, high-calibre military hardware as well as strong democratic leadership on the other side of the border.”

India has firmly rejected Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s allegations regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, asserting that Islamabad’s continued support for cross-border terrorism disrupts the treaty’s execution. Speaking at the UN conference on glaciers in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, Minister of State for Environment Kirti Vardhan Singh stated that Pakistan’s accusations were baseless and politically motivated.

“We are appalled at the attempt by Pakistan to misuse the forum and to bring in unwarranted references to issues which do not fall within the purview of the forum. We strongly condemned such an attempt,” Singh declared during the plenary session.

India Demands Reassessment of Treaty Amid Changed Circumstances

Kirti Vardhan Singh also highlighted that the context in which the Indus Waters Treaty was signed in 1960 has significantly changed. He pointed to technological progress, demographic shifts, climate change, and, most crucially, persistent cross-border terrorism as grounds for reassessing the treaty’s obligations.

The minister emphasised that the treaty’s preamble was founded on goodwill and mutual respect. “However, the unrelenting cross-border terrorism from Pakistan interferes with the ability to exploit the treaty as per its provisions,” Singh stated.

He added, “Pakistan, which itself is in violation of the treaty, should desist from putting the blame of the breach of the treaty on India.”

Pakistan Accuses India of Jeopardising Lives Over Politics

Shehbaz Sharif, while addressing the same UN forum, claimed India had suspended the Indus Waters Treaty for political leverage. “India’s unilateral and illegal decision to hold in abeyance the Indus Waters Treaty, which governs the sharing of the Indus Basin’s water, is deeply regrettable,” Pakistani daily Dawn quoted Sharif as saying.

He further warned that Pakistan would not tolerate any “red line” being crossed by India in relation to the treaty, alleging that New Delhi was endangering millions of lives for “narrow political gains.”

India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty in the wake of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 people dead. The move formed part of a broader package of punitive measures against Pakistan, aimed at pressuring Islamabad to rein in terror groups operating from its soil.

</excerpt>

In a shocking and unprecedented public acknowledgment, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that Indian ballistic missiles hit Nur Khan Airbase and several other targets in the pre-dawn hours of May 10. This unprecedented statement by a Pakistani head of government adds credibility to India’s assertions of having successfully conducted Operation Sindoor, a synchronized retaliatory campaign unleashed in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

Midnight Call of PM Shehbaz Sharif

In a public speech in Islamabad, Shehbaz Sharif elaborated on being given a secure call by Pakistan Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir at 2:30 AM. “In the intervening night of May 9-10, at 2:30 AM, General Asif Munir phoned me on a secure line and informed me that India had fired its ballistic missiles. He mentioned that one has struck the Nur Khan airbase and others in other locations,” he mentioned.

Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif himself admits that General Asim Munir called him at 2:30am to inform him that India had bombed Nur Khan Air Base and several other locations. Let that sink in — the Prime Minister was woken up in the middle of the night with news of strikes deep inside… pic.twitter.com/b4QbsF7xJh

— Amit Malviya (@amitmalviya) May 16, 2025

The Indian Air Force previously struck the Nur Khan Airbase—an important strategic installation between Rawalpindi and Islamabad—during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

BJP’s Reaction on Shehbaz Sharif

Responding to Sharif’s revelation, BJP leader Amit Malviya posted on X, “Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif himself admits that General Asim Munir called him at 2:30 am to tell him India had bombed Nur Khan Air Base and several other targets. Let that sink in – the Prime Minister was awakened in the dead of the night with news of attacks deep within Pakistan. This says volumes about # the extent, precision, and audacity of #OperationSindoor.”

Operation Sindoor, initiated on 7th May, was India’s immediate reaction against the Pahalgam attack that resulted in the death of 26 Indian nationals. The operation focused on decimating terrorist networks and strategic military centers within Pakistan and PoK.

Scope of Indian Strikes

Government reports disclosed that the Indian military, the Air Force, the Army, and Navy, launched coordinated attacks in at least 11 strategic targets. These were air bases, radar facilities, and communications centers at Chaklala (Nur Khan), Sargodha, Jacobabad, Bholari, and Skardu.

India’s intelligence networks also picked up high-alert communications within Pakistan’s military system, signaling panic and increased anxiety about nuclear installation security. The authorities put the Strategic Plans Division at Rawalpindi on maximum alert.

Escalation and Ceasefire

After Indian strikes, Pakistan responded with artillery shelling and drone attacks across Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Gujarat. India responded by targeting and destroying several Pakistani radar facilities.

Fearing things would get out of hand, Pakistan reportedly reached out to the United States. Later on May 10 at 15:35 IST, Pakistan’s DGMO Major General Kashif Abdullah made a hotline call to India’s DGMO Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri later confirmed the conversation.

India and Pakistan subsequently agreed to suspend all military operations on land, sea, and air by the evening of May 10. Yet, Indian radars continued to spot several Pakistani drones breaching the ceasefire later.

India Holds Its Ground

In response, India replied quickly. Subsequently, Foreign Secretary Misri denounced the Pakistani drone violations and firmly reiterated India’s readiness for any further provocation. He also reiterated the ongoing suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, highlighting India’s strong position post-Pahalgam.

In the wider geopolitical drama, Prime Minister Sharif’s blunt acknowledgement is a turning point of great importance. It highlights India’s increased military assertiveness as well as Pakistan’s domestic weakness. For once, the fog of war has cleared, disclosing an instant of unusual clarity in the subcontinent’s shadow war.

Tank-Top Optics Fail to Hide India’s Devastating Air Strikes

<excerpt>As PM Modi landed confidently at Adampur amidst S-400s, Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to a distant, damaged Pasrur base lacked credibility. This contrast revealed India’s overwhelming tactical and narrative advantage.
</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to the Adampur air base has not just made a forceful nationalistic assertion, but by doing so, also unwittingly revealed the magnitude of destruction wrought by India on Pakistani air bases. On the day after Modi’s defiant appearance at an operational base with S-400 and MiG29 out in the open, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tried his dual attempt at visiting the Pasrur cantonment in Sialkot. But the difference between the two men’s appearances could not have been more stark.

While PM Modi arrived at Adampur in a Hercules plane, directly indicating the full operational capability of the air base, the arrival of Shehbaz Sharif was strangely sans aerial coverage. Sources mentioned that Sharif arrived only in a jeep, indicating that aerial arrival was not possible due to the possible damage to the runway. The visuals also showed a poorly constructed atmosphere with tanks and a flex sheet background, which appeared unrelated to any actual combat context.

Moreover, Sharif’s address lacked the gravitas or conviction of Modi’s. Standing atop a tank marked with a sign reading “The Prime Minister of Pakistan,” Sharif’s performance appeared more theatrical than strategic. In comparison, PM Modi stood beside battle-ready equipment, confidently asserting, “Humne unke ghar mein ghuske kuchal diya (We entered deep into their home and crushed them).”

Poor Copy by Sharif

This poor copy by Sharif merely served to enhance India’s narrative victory. Satellite photos reported by foreign media outlets including The Washington Post and The New York Times further supported destruction of several Pakistani airbases. Distinguished warfare experts like Tom Cooper and John Spencer further established the idea of India’s overwhelming dominance in the confrontation.

The optics from both sides also reflect a broader strategic divergence. India is not just winning the battle on the ground but also dominating the war of minds. Sharif’s absence of visual proximity to the alleged “undamaged” base was in itself a silent acknowledgment of damage.

While India stands firm through open military parades, Pakistan’s attempts at projecting resilience have, in a strange turn of events, highlighted its weaknesses. This incident exposed the weaknesses of Pakistan’s military PR and reinforced India’s status as the preeminent power in this regional conflict.

</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has urged the de-escalation of the conflict between India and Pakistan in immediate phone talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The telephonic exchanges come at a time when both countries are witnessing increased conflict, with Pakistan conducting missile and drone attacks on several Indian cities including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan.

US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed the negotiations, underscoring Rubio’s firm focus on lessening hostilities. The Secretary conveyed condolences over the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that resulted in several deaths, and reiterated the US’s resolve to support India in its battle against terrorism.

The dialogue mirrors the global anxiety regarding the surging border violence, with world powers appealing to both nations to value peace and diplomacy above further conflict.

</excerpt>

Sharif Lauds Army Behind Crisis

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday spoke to the country’s parliament to update lawmakers on India’s recent Operation Sindoor, an operation aimed at targeting terror camps within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. But his address was filled with conflicting words that indicated Pakistan’s seeming befuddlement and overdependence on propaganda to cope with local opinions.

Sharif complimented the military command for “restoring the country’s respect,” even though it is commonly perceived that the policies and tacit support of the Pakistani Army towards anti-India militant outfits ignited the scenario. The Pakistan Army’s role in supporting terror organizations has been a contentious issue for a long time, and according to many, its activities culminated in the Indian airstrikes directly.

Disputes Over Indian Violation of Airspace

Adding to the contradiction, Sharif appeared uncertain about the details of the Indian Air Force’s operations. Whereas the Pakistani army maintains Indian jets never crossed the border, Sharif asserted that the Pakistan Army jammed their communications and “forced them to withdraw.” This contradiction begs the question: if Indian planes never entered Pakistani air space, from where were they allegedly pushed back?

Misinformation Campaign Intensifies

As for Sharif’s assertions that the Pakistan Army was “completely prepared,” India is said to have hit nine terror targets with precision. Narendra Modi, India’s Prime Minister, confirmed the operation was conducted perfectly, putting Pakistan off its guard. The Pakistani media and social networks meanwhile have been doing the rounds on old videos and pictures in an apparent bid to deceive the general public.

Sharif’s contradictory speech seems more intended to defend his home public image than present a fact-based report bemoaning the increasing dependence on disinformation as a tool for influencing public perceptions in Pakistan.

Shehbaz Sharif Breaks Silence—Authorizes Military Response to India

<excerpt>India’s decisive strike on terror camps in Pakistan under Operation Sindoor has drawn strong reactions from Islamabad, escalating cross-border tensions and sparking diplomatic protests.
</excerpt>

India’s precision strikes under ‘Operation Sindoor’ on nine terror camps across Pakistan and PoK have drawn a sharp and immediate response from Islamabad. The office of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has officially announced that the ‘military has been formally authorised to respond to India’s strikes’, signaling a dangerous escalation in the subcontinent.

Indian forces carefully executed the retaliatory attacks triggered by the Pahalgam terror incident, deliberately avoiding Pakistani military installations. India’s intent, clearly articulated, was to dismantle terror infrastructure without igniting a broader conflict. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a high-level briefing to his cabinet, described the operation as a “pivotal moment of national pride.” Leaders across political lines echoed this sentiment, framing the strike as a unified stand against cross-border terrorism.

Strategic Accuracy Without Military Aggression

The Indian military action took care to specifically target Pakistani military facilities. Instead, it exclusively targeted terrorist launchpads and infrastructure in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This calculated action reflected India’s desire to dismantle terror infrastructure without escalating the conflict into an all-out war.

In a high-level briefing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed his cabinet, calling the operation a “moment of national pride.” His words resonated across party lines, with opposition leaders from different parties offering support and congratulating the government’s restrained response.

Pakistan’s Denial and Defensive Posturing

Across the border, Pakistan continued to deny any role in the Pahalgam attack that claimed the lives of 26 innocent tourists. While a faction identified with Lashkar-e-Taiba had claimed responsibility for the attack, Islamabad brushed aside India’s accusations. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif summoned Pakistan’s National Security Committee, which described the Indian operation as an “unprovoked, cowardly and unlawful act of war.”

The declaration highlighted that the Indian strikes had targeted civilian areas, not militant ones.

Diplomatic Fallout and Threats of Retaliation

Pakistan quickly summoned an Indian diplomat, filing a formal complaint and threatening repercussions. Information Minister Ataullah Tarar minced no words, saying, “Pakistan has the right to retaliate against Indian strikes,” and cautioned India not to underestimate its military preparedness.

He reiterated that the Pakistani military had been permitted to respond “at a time, place, and manner of its choosing.”

Escalation on the Horizon

As both countries delve into their stand, the situation is tenuous. India has exercised its prerogative to strike terrorist targets preemptively, while Pakistan describes the act as aggression against its sovereignty. The next few days will be important as the region awaits potential retaliatory measures and heightened military alertness on either side.

</excerpt>

Islamabad reacted vigorously to India’s retaliatory measures after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed at least 26 lives by issuing a string of countermeasures on Thursday (April 24). These decisions were taken in a high-level Pakistan National Security Committee (NSC) meeting, presided over by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Pakistan Announces Indus Treaty Suspension as ‘Act of War

One of the most powerful responses was against India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. Pakistan, in an official statement, threatened catastrophic repercussions if India goes ahead with diverting river waters.

“Water is a Vital National Interest of Pakistan, a lifeline for its 240 million people, and its availability will be safeguarded at all costs. Any attempt to stop or divert the flow of water belonging to Pakistan as per the Indus Waters Treaty, and the usurpation of the rights of lower riparian will be considered as an Act of War and responded with full force across the complete spectrum of National Power,” Pakistan said in a statement.

Bilateral Agreements and Border Relations Cut Off

Pakistan suspended the historic Simla Agreement and all other bilateral agreements with India. In a tit-for-tat, Islamabad immediately closed down the Wagah Border Post in lockstep with India’s closure announcement on Wednesday. The neighbouring country also stopped all SAARC visas for Indian citizens, except for Sikh religious pilgrims.

Airspace, Diplomats, and Trade Cut Off

Taking the diplomatic confrontation further, Pakistan sealed its airspace for all Indian-owned or operated flights with immediate effect. It also ordered Indian Defence, Naval, and Air Advisors to be expelled as persona non grata and asked them to vacate the country by April 30. The strength of the Indian High Commission staff in Islamabad has been limited to 30—matching similar action taken by India.

In another setback to bilateral ties, Islamabad suspended all trade with India, including that passed through third nations.

Pakistan Indicators Preparedness for ‘National Power Response’

In its formal release, Pakistan committed to apply its “full-spectrum national power” in response to any challenge towards its sovereignty. The declaration emphasized Pakistan’s preparedness to meet what it termed India’s “reckless and irresponsible behavior.”.

As tensions ratchet up between the two nuclear neighbours, the region awaits further news amidst increased international concern.

</excerpt>

Following the horrific terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 civilians, former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria has gone on social media to question Islamabad and the silence of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The gruesome attack has evoked outrage across the world, with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah terming it “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years.”

Kaneria Target Shehbaz Sharif

Posting on X (ex-Twitter), Kaneria questioned, “If Pakistan truly has no role in the Pahalgam terror attack, why hasn’t Prime Minister @CMShehbaz condemned it yet?”

His comment comes amidst growing international condemnation and domestic calls for accountability by Pakistan’s leadership.

If Pakistan truly has no role in the Pahalgam terror attack, why hasn’t Prime Minister @CMShehbaz condemned it yet?
NIA Initiates Probe; Lashkar Commander Identified as Mastermind

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formally opened an investigation into the attack. Indian security forces have made public sketches of suspected terrorists who carried out the attack and have named Saifullah Kasuri, a key Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander, as the suspected mastermind.

In the meantime, Kaneria took his criticism even further in a second tweet and target Shehbaz Sharif, writing, “Why are your forces suddenly on high alert? Because deep down, you know the truth — you’re sheltering and nurturing terrorists. Shame on you.”

Kaneria’s words have generated heated debate across channels, particularly following his posting of another provocative message, which questioned, “Why do some Indian Muslims get offended whenever I tweet something? Genuinely curious — just asking.”

He further stated that India’s reaction would not be confined to the perpetrators on the ground. “We won’t just reach those people who carried out the attack. We will also reach out to those who planned this from behind the scenes on our land,” he said.

The attack has again brought demands for international action against terror groups based in Pakistan, with leaders calling for accountability and justice for the victims.

</excerpt>

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has assured Pakistan’s resolute commitment towards keeping close to the United States to ensure peace and stability at the regional level. He has thanked US President Donald Trump for acknowledging Pakistan’s pivotal role against terrorism in Afghanistan.

In a social media platform X (previously Twitter) statement, PM Shehbaz Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s persistent efforts against counter-terrorism, citing its resolve to deny extremist organizations safe havens and foil their activities against any nation. He mentioned that more than 80,000 Pakistani civilians and soldiers have lost their lives in the struggle against terrorism, solidifying the country’s firm stance against extremist attacks.

“The resolve of our leadership and our people remains unflinching, to eradicate the menace of terrorism from our country. We will continue to partner closely with the United States in securing regional peace and stability,” PM Shehbaz Sharif stated. He reiterated Pakistan’s willingness to work closely with the US to ensure long-term regional peace and security.

Trump Thanks Pakistan for Arrest of Kabul Airport Bomber

Earlier today, US President Donald Trump thanked Pakistan for helping catch a principal terrorist behind the 2021 bombing of Kabul’s airport. The bombing, during the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan, killed 13 American troops and around 170 Afghan civilians.

Speaking to a joint session of Congress, Trump declared, “Three and a half years ago, a [Daesh] terrorist killed 13 American service members and countless others in the Abbey Gate bombing. Tonight, I am pleased to announce that we have just apprehended the top terrorist responsible for that atrocity. And he is right now on his way here to face the swift sword of American justice.”

Trump also appreciated Pakistan’s involvement in the operation, stating, “I want to thank, especially, the Pakistani government for helping arrest this monster,” Trump said. “This was a very momentous day for the 13 families I got to know very well, whose children were murdered on that fateful day.”

US Approves $397 Million for Pakistan’s F-16 Maintenance

In a significant policy shift, the Trump administration has recently sanctioned $397 million for the upkeep of Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jet fleet. The move is a reversal of a previous foreign aid freeze and allocates the funds solely for counter-terrorism activities.

As per a Reuters report, a US-monitored program will manage the funding of these monies so they don’t go against India. Even with an executive order suspending foreign funding overseas, the US has given security-related exemptions amounting to around $5.3 billion, the share of Pakistan being one of 243 such releases.

While Pakistan and the US persist with their counter-terrorism and regional stability partnership, both countries rest their assertions on mutual security interests and concerns.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to offering moral, political, and diplomatic support to the people of Kashmir in their quest for self-determination. People celebrate January 5 as Right to Self-Determination Day. Sharif called for the United Nations (UN) to implement the 1949 resolution ensuring a free and impartial plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the UN commitment to Kashmiri self-determination, a core principle enshrined in the UN Charter. He appealed to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) to live up to that promise and to take concrete action to ensure the Kashmiri people exercise their inalienable right to self-determination.

“The Kashmiri people have been deprived of this right for over seven decades,” the prime minister said.” “It is time for the international community, including the United Nations, to live up to their promises and take meaningful measures, enabling the people of Jammu and Kashmir to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination,” he said.”

Condemning Human Rights Violations

Shehbaz Sharif called on the global community to appeal for immediate respect for human rights across India’s Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. He pleaded for the authorities to release political prisoners and restore essential freedoms to the general population in occupied Kashmir. Furthermore, the statement underscored India’s violations of the internationally disputed territory, highlighting that the country “continues to take multiple steps to consolidate its occupation of the of the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK)”.

The statement pointed to India’s unilateral decision on August 5, 2019, to revoke Article 370 of its constitution. The move stripped the Muslim-majority territory of its special status, allowing non-residents to buy property and settle in the region. Critics see this as an effort to alter the demographic composition of Kashmir, reducing its Muslim majority.

“Through a series of illegal and unilateral actions taken since 5 August 2019, India is trying to alter the demographic and political structure of the disputed territory, aimed at transforming the majority Kashmiri people into a disempowered minority community, in their own homeland,” it said, adding that it was also “subjecting the Kashmiri people to wide-ranging gross, systematic human rights violations”.

“Pakistan reaffirms its strong resolve to continue extending its full moral, political and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri people, in their just struggle for realisation of their right to self-determination, as enshrined in the Charter and relevant resolutions of the UN, as well as in international law,” the statement added.

Zardari Echoes Support for Kashmir

President Asif Ali Zardari also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the Kashmiri people. In a statement reported by state-owned Radio Pakistan, he criticized India’s decades-long denial of self-determination to the people of IIOJK.

“India has subjected Kashmiris to systemic oppression, violence, and brutalities for over seven decades,” Zardari said. “Pakistan will continue to stand with the Kashmiri people in their just struggle for self-determination.”

Renewing the Call for Justice

Right to Self-Determination Day statements from the leadership point towards Pakistan’s rigid stance on the Kashmir issue. In this context, Shehbaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari called for the global community to join hands in delivering justice to the people of Kashmir and putting an end to the prolonged agony faced by them. Furthermore, they reiterated that Pakistan stands firm in supporting the freedom movement and fundamental rights of Kashmiris, which are recognized internationally and through UN resolutions.

</excerpt>

Considering PTI threatening to begin a civil disobedience movement, the Pakistani government under the leadership of Shehbaz Sharif has constituted an apex committee with which to initiate formal dialogue with Imran Khan’s PTI.

The committee comprises Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, political aide Rana Sanaullah, Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, and other key officials with the goal of resolving the intensifying political tensions. PTI hailed the move as a “constructive step” towards resolution of the crisis.

“This is a constructive step,” said PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan. “We need meaningful talks within a set timeframe as it is a sensitive situation.”.

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, who had earlier offered to mediate, has invited both sides to meet at his chambers on Monday to facilitate discussions. PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram confirmed the party’s acceptance of the invitation and said progress from the meeting would be relayed to the party’s founder, Imran Khan, for further decisions on the civil disobedience threat.

PTI had issued a warning of launching the movement, starting with a “remittance boycott,” if its demands for the release of under-trial political prisoners and formation of a judicial commission to probe into the incidents of May 9, 2023, and November 26, 2024, were not met.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s military courts sentenced 25 civilians to prison terms of 2–10 years for attacks on military installations during the May 2023 riots, which followed Khan’s arrest in a corruption case. Hundreds were arrested nationwide, with over 100 suspects handed to military authorities for trial.

Khan, who is currently sitting in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, had already faced multiple legal challenges against him since his ouster in April 2022. However, both sides have now started working on their differences as PTI has temporarily deferred the civil disobedience call.

</excerpt>

Century Steel Group, a Chinese steel producer, has issued a final warning to the Pakistani government to resolve longstanding issues at the Rashakai Special Economic Zone (RSEZ) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Failure to address these concerns will result in the company dismantling its plant and exiting Pakistan, the company announced in a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Unfulfilled Promises and Financial Losses

The company’s CEO, Li Chunjian, expressed frustration over unresolved challenges despite a $30 million investment in the first phase of their steel project. These issues have led to losses amounting to $7.5 million in staff and maintenance expenses over five years.

The project, part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative, was intended to become Pakistan’s largest steel mill, with plans to produce 500,000 tonnes of steel annually in its initial phase.

Ambitious Plans Now at Risk

Century Steel had aimed to invest an additional $200 million to expand operations in two more phases, transferring advanced steel technology from China. The final capacity was projected to reach 1.5 million tonnes, contributing significantly to Pakistan’s GDP, job creation, and regional steel exports.

Government’s Response

In response to the ultimatum, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formed a committee led by Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan to address the company’s complaints. This committee comprises members from both the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments.

However, despite assurances, Century Steel stated that prolonged inaction has forced them to consider notifying the Chinese embassy and international press about the situation.

The Bigger Picture

Century Steel’s potential withdrawal signals challenges in attracting and retaining foreign investment in Pakistan. The outcome of this dispute could impact future collaborations under CPEC and Pakistan’s economic growth trajectory.

This ultimatum serves as a wake-up call for policymakers to urgently address concerns and uphold commitments to foreign investors.

Dr. Jaishankar‘s visit to Pakistan is a very important engagement in the context of cooperation and dialogue at the regional level. This SCO is a multilateral organization, which consists of member countries belonging to Central Asia and South Asia, interacting on political, economic, as well as security-related issues.

On the dinner table, leaders discussed the common interest in several issues by stating that it was better to address problems when common aims are intended. SCO’s platform is a good opportunity provided to the member states to develop its relations and settle various issues such as trade, security, and even cultural exchange.

The event shows the importance of SCO in obtaining stability and prosperity for its member countries. Hence, more than ever, discussion and cooperation among nations with each other towards meeting the current global challenge is a must now.

Video footage of the event provided by PTV depicts the amiable atmosphere and the importance of the discussions held between the leaders.

</excerpt>

In the first official response from Pakistan to the newly formed Indian government, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Narendra Modi on his re-election. Sharif’s message came on Monday, a day after Modi and his ministers were sworn in. Until now, Pakistan had refrained from commenting on Modi’s election victory, with the Foreign Office stating last Friday that it was “premature” to do so as the government formation process was still ongoing.

So far, there has been no official response from the Indian side to the message of Shehbaz Sharif. Modi, however, has acknowledged congratulations from other leaders, including Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and former Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Relations between India and Pakistan have been strained, particularly since the 2019 Pulwama attack, which brought both countries close to conflict. The situation further deteriorated after India revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, leading Pakistan to downgrade diplomatic ties. Unlike in 2014, when Pakistan was invited to Modi’s first inauguration, the current scenario reflects the deep freeze in bilateral relations.

</excerpt>

Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, tendered his resignation as the President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), according to reports from ARY News.

Sources indicated that Shehbaz Sharif submitted his resignation to Nawaz Sharif, the PML-N supremo. Following this development, the PML-N announced plans to convene a general council meeting in Lahore on May 28 to elect a new president. This decision came after an earlier announcement to hold a similar meeting on May 11, as reported by ARY News.

During a recent press conference, Rana Sanaullah highlighted that the Punjab chapter of the PML-N had urged Nawaz Sharif to reassume the party presidency. The party members emphasized Nawaz Sharif’s leadership and its significance in achieving the party’s goals. A resolution supporting Nawaz Sharif’s return to lead the party was reportedly passed during the PML-N Punjab meeting.

It is noteworthy that Nawaz Sharif had faced legal restrictions on holding public office following his conviction in 2018. However, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) acquitted him in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references on November 29 and December 12, respectively.

After his acquittal, Nawaz Sharif contested and won the General Elections 2024 from NA-130 Lahore. His return to elected office marked a significant development in Pakistan’s political landscape, setting the stage for potential leadership changes within the PML-N.

</excerpt>

Geo News in Pakistan said that on Thursday, Fawad Chaudhry, the former leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), hinted that Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan, would emerge if an agreement is reached between the party’s founder and the establishment.

As a result of senior PTI leader Shehryar Afridi’s recent declaration that his party would hold “dialogue with the chief of army staff (COAS) and the director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence (DG ISI) soon,” as opposed to “rejected individuals” who entered parliament through Form 47, Chaudhry’s remarks came to light amid alleged “talks” between the PTI and the establishment.

Afridi made these statements on the Geo News program ‘Naya Pakistan.’ PTI leadership, however, refuted any clandestine discussions with “anyone.”

Addressing journalists outside the Lahore High Court (LHC), Fawad Chaudhry, who denies severing ties with PTI, predicted that the ousted former Pakistan PM Imran Khan would not strike a deal with the establishment.

Former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry of Pakistan remarked, “If he [Imran Khan] strikes a deal, he will become Shehbaz Sharif,” further adding, “Now, a threat to PM Shehbaz is not from his house but from those who brought him to power and outsiders,” according to Geo News.

Discussing Pakistan’s multiple crises, Fawad Chaudhry emphasized the need for recovery from economic instability, stating, “We need to recover.” He reiterated that no new charter is necessary as the Constitution is in place.

Responding to another inquiry, Fawad Chaudhry lauded the judiciary, asserting that “judges are rewriting history.”

On April 30, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Barrister Gohar Khan stated that his party was currently not engaged in ‘backdoor talks’ with anyone, reported top Pakistani daily The Express Tribune.

His statements followed reports indicating that imprisoned PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan had authorized negotiations with the establishment and political factions.

PTI chairman made these remarks during a press conference with party leader Sher Afzal Marwat after meeting Imran Khan at Adiala Jail. He mentioned that the PTI founder had only requested names for talks, clarifying that no negotiations were underway at present.

Gohar stated that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif had been “cleared of all charges while the PTI founder faced punishment in fabricated cases,” according to The Express Tribune.

“The police are being manipulated against our party. Maryam Nawaz appearing in police uniform sends a clear message that the police are subservient to them,” quoted PTI chairman Imran Khan during their meeting.

Earlier reports suggested that Imran had greenlit PTI to negotiate with the establishment and political adversaries. However, he emphasized adherence to rules and expressed PTI’s willingness to engage with both authorities and political rivals for the greater good.

The swearing-in occurred amidst nationwide protests led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which has alleged electoral irregularities in the recent general elections.

President Arif Alvi administered the oath of office to Shehbaz at the Aiwan-i-Sadr. The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, former President Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, and the chief ministers of Sindh, Punjab, and Balochistan, according to Dawn.

Shehbaz Sharif secured 201 votes in the National Assembly, defeating his rival Omar Ayub Khan, who was supported by the PTI, to become the Prime Minister. The formation of the government followed prolonged negotiations involving PML(N), PPP, and smaller parties.

PTI leader Meher Bano Qureshi expressed the possibility of presenting a no-confidence motion against Shehbaz Sharif, as reported by Dawn. She emphasized the importance of restoring their electoral mandate and seeking justice from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the courts. PTI MNA Gohar Ali Khan criticized Shehbaz Sharif’s election, labeling it as a “sad day for democracy” during his speech in the National Assembly. He questioned the legitimacy of Shehbaz Sharif’s long-standing political tenure and expressed concerns over entrusting Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities to someone without a clear public mandate.

</excerpt>

According to Dawn, Pakistan’s interim Interior Ministry has declared a temporary suspension of mobile services across the country.
Citing the “deteriorating security situation,” the ministry stressed the need to safeguard against potential security risks.
The decision follows previous terrorist incidents that have taken lives and damaged the security environment across the country, according to Pakistan-based Dawn.

In a statement, the ministry said, “Recent surge in terrorist activities resulting in precious lives have stirred security environment in the country.”
Therefore, it added, “need has arisen to take measures to safeguard against” security threats.

According to Dawn, the temporary suspension of mobile services demonstrates the government’s commitment to solving current security concerns and ensuring public safety.
Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and working hard to restore order while prioritizing security precautions.
The decision to stop mobile services demonstrates how seriously the government is taking the problem of national security.
As the country navigates these difficult times, residents are urged to be watchful and work with security personnel to maintain stability and peace throughout Pakistan.

Aside from that, voting in Pakistan for national and provincial assemblies has already begun. The polling procedure for over 128 million people began at 8 a.m. and will end at 5 p.m. Pakistan’s Caretaker Interior Ministry has set up a control room to supervise the situation.
This room also facilitates information sharing between law enforcement and other relevant entities.

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has stated that Nawaz Sharif will be the party’s prime ministerial candidate if the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz wins a majority in the upcoming elections.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, who has campaigned across the country, the PML-N is “not even reaching 100 seats by far.”

He went on to say that it was up to the people to make their decision.
Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) and one of the country’s most popular leaders, is being held at Adiala jail on several charges.

The cricketer-turned-politician has been barred from running in the elections and condemned to ten years in the cypher case, fourteen years in the Toshakhana case, and seven years in the ‘un-Islamic’ marriage case.
In a video message uploaded on his official Twitter account, Khan urged his fans to vote in large numbers.
On February 7, Khan stated in a video message, “Elections are tomorrow. I want you to come out and bring out as many people as you know. Because you will change the fate of yourself as well as that of your children through these elections.”

PTI has rejected reports about party boycotting elections. In a post on X, PTI stated, “Let the world know that this is the level to which the illegitimate, fascist regime has stooped to! Petrified of the massive turnout tomorrow for General Elections, the controlled media is being used to run a fake news about PTI boycotting elections, along with running a fake audio!”

The party added, “The illegitimate regime has used every ounce of fascism, propaganda & unprecedented pre poll rigging against Pakistan’s largest, most popular & only federal party PTI, led by illegally incarcerated Imran Khan.
Yet, the resolve of the nation proved stronger than the oppression! The will of the people will reign supreme!”

The paper highlighted how the coalition had “devastated” the economy and “contravered” the Constitution, according to Dawn.

To commemorate the first year that the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), a multi-party coalition that ousted Imran Khan’s government with a no-confidence vote in April of last year, had been in power, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) released a white paper that emphasised how the coalition had “devastated” the economy and “contravered” the Constitution, according to Dawn.

The document spans six chapters and passes a scathing judgement on the PDM government’s style of governance, particularly the treatment given to the opposition party by the ruling coalition. It also deliberates on issues related to economy, Constitution, democracy and rule of law, political exploitation of state institutions, attack on judiciary, ‘chained’ foreign policy, and law and order. According to a report in Dawn, the party has dedicated the white paper to PTI chief Imran Khan, party workers, and the people of Pakistan, who are “fighting and facing torture for real independence” and democracy.

The PTI chief also spoke via video link from his residence in Zaman Park on the launch of the white paper. The former premier accused the government of ravaging the country’s all institutions, rule of law, and the economy as well as violations of basic human rights.
Khan claimed that the federal government would not allow elections to be conducted as per the court order and appealed to his supporters to remain prepared to take to the streets for the sake of basic human rights and justice.

Stating that the country was now awake to protect its rights and standing with the judiciary, Khan said the nation would be required to come out on roads in both situations — either the government does not hold elections, or elections are held after a crackdown on PTI with its leadership incarcerated.

Khan also accepted that the conspiracy to overthrow his government was not hatched in the US. It was actually General Bajwa who had planned the conspiracy with the help of Shehbaz Sharif and then hired Hussain Haqqani to launch propaganda that “Gen Bajwa was pro-America and Imran Khan was anti-America”.

The former premier acknowledged, “The cipher made entry came only after the conspiracy had taken its roots.”
On the day when he left the PM office with “only a diary in his hand”, Khan said the PTI had launched a white paper that what actually had happened to Pakistan during the past year. He said the nation must know the fate of Pakistan just because a few people took a decision behind closed doors, as per Dawn.

The former premier also said his government inherited a bankrupt economy in 2018 when Pakistan was facing its highest USD 20 billion current account deficit with only USD 8 billion in reserves.

He said, “The PTI government stabilised the economy….fought against the coronavirus pandemic…eventually boosted the economy to rise by 5.7 per cent and 6 per cent during the last two years of its rule.”
He bemoaned the growth rate had now slid down to 0.4 per cent which has pushed at least four million people below the poverty line. He added, “The 12 per cent inflation has now risen to almost 35 per cent.”

Stating the PDM government faced no crisis and still blowing the trumpet of the rise in terrorism, Mr Khan claimed there was a grave surge in terror incidents during the PTI government but it controlled the “menace and drove Pakistan from terrorism to tourism”. He claimed the incumbent rulers did not rehabilitate the TTP when the Afghan Taliban sent them back to Pakistan. It may be noted here that the PTI government had planned to resettle TTP militants in tribal districts, reported Dawn.

While speaking of the prohibited funding case Imran Khan said, “The foreign funding case has ended and the Toshakhana case will meet the same fate…Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari would now be caught in this case.” The Toshakhana record was now available and their act of stealing cars would be exposed soon, he claimed.

There were a number of speculations and political scuffles in the country for weeks.

“Using constitutional authority, Pakistan Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has decided to appoint Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir as Chief of the Army Staff,” Pakistan Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb tweeted.Aurangzeb said that a summary of the same had been sent to Pakistan President Arif Alvi.

“The PM office has received the summary from the Ministry of Defense with a panel of names for the appointment of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and Chief of the Army Staff.” “The Prime Minister will take a decision on the appointments as per the laid-down procedure,” the Pakistan prime minister’s office said in a statement.
Gen. Bajwa, 61, is slated to retire next week after a three-year extension.
On Tuesday, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said the summary had been forwarded to the PMO from the defence ministry. “The rest of the steps will be completed soon,” he tweeted.

Imran Khan, the head of the opposition and a former prime minister, has been warned by Pakistan’s defence minister that the coalition government will deal with him following the selection of the next Army chief.

“It will take two to three days to complete the process.” The thrill ride will end, and then we’ll talk about Imran Khan. “The Express Tribune” cited the Pakistani defence minister’s statement.

He hinted at the formal announcement of the important appointment within the following three days when he made these comments on the floor of the Pakistan National Assembly.

This occurs after the selection process for the new army chief was launched on Monday, when Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif requested a summary of potential candidates.

Rana Sanaullah, Pakistan Interior Minister on Friday said that a new army chief will be appointed in a day or two by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He said he believes that further delay over the appointment will be inappropriate.

According to Sanaullah, PM Sharif has finished the consultation process to name the next army head, and a decision on General Qamar Javed Bajwa’s replacement would be announced in a “day or two,” according to reports. On November 29, the incumbent, Gen. Bajwa, will retire.

The interior minister stated, “Just formal announcement has yet to be made,” implying that the name for the coveted position had been decided upon.

He said, “In my opinion, further delay over the appointment will not be appropriate.”Meanwhile, on the other hand Asif Ali Zardari, the coalition partner Pakistan People’s Party Co-chairman, said that his party has faith in the internal promotion system of the Pakistan Army.

After PTI leader Imran Khan suggested that the selection of the head of the armed forces should be handled similarly to that of the top justice of the Supreme Court, Zardari made his comments. The PTI chairman has pushed for the army chief to be chosen on the basis of merit.

The PPP leader claimed in a statement that all three-star generals are equally qualified and have all necessary skills to lead the army. The next army chief would be chosen by the prime minister in accordance with the legislation, he continued.

President Alvi said that he will follow PM Shehbaz Sharif’s advice regarding the major appointment. “Appointment of the chief of the armed forces should be done like that of the Supreme Court’s chief justice,” Khan said, according to the sources.

“The proposed amendment to the Army Act will be challenged in the Supreme Court,” the former prime minister said and informed journalists that he hasn’t met General Bajwa in Lahore.

Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s PM met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Wednesday. With this meeting he became the first head of the country to visit China since x’s re-election for the third time.

Following his meeting with Xi in Uzbekistan in September, this is Sharif’s second trip to China since taking office in April of this year. “During his maiden 2-days visit to China, PM Shehbaz Sharif and President Xi Jinping met at the People’s Great Hall of China to discuss broad-based cooperation in economy and investment and exchanged views on regional and global developments,” tweeted Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

A high-ranking group, led by Sharif, also includes Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He will also discuss the All-Weather Strategic Cooperation Partnership between China and Pakistan with Premier Li Keqiang at the delegation level.

“I would be soon in Beijing on my first bilateral visit after assuming office, and that too at an opportune time, soon after the successful conclusion of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China,” Sharif said ahead of his visit.

“For Pakistan, relations with China form the cornerstone of our foreign policy; in China, Pakistan is described as Ba Tie i.e. China’s Iron Brother, and elsewhere our ties are appreciated for their unique strength, enduring permanence and unfathomable trust,” he wrote.

“My discussions with Chinese leadership will focus on revitalization of CPEC among many other things. 2nd phase of CPEC promises to usher in a new era of socio-economic progress that will uplift quality of our people’s lives. There is a lot to learn from Chinese economic miracle,” Sharif tweeted.
Meanwhile, China raised the issue of safety and security of Chinese personnel and projects in Pakistan ahead of Sharif’s visit.
