</excerpt>

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Thursday said he has “differences of opinion” with some in the party leadership, a re- mark that could lead to an- other round of turbulence in the grand old party. Breaking his silence over his absence from campaigning in the Nilambur bypolls in his home state Kerala, he further said he did not receive any invitation or missed call from the state leaders.

Speaking to reporters here, Tharoor, who is also the Congress Working Committee (CWC) mem- ber said: “I wasn’t invited by the party. But that’s al- right.” He made the remarks when asked about his ab- sence from the campaign trail in Nilambur where voting for the by election is under way. “First of all, I was gone for much of the time on this official diplomatic mission. When I came back there was no insistence, no missed call from the leader- ship saying I should come,” he said.

Tharoor also admitted of having differences with some party leaders and said, “I do have differences of opinion with some in the Congress leadership.”

The Congress leader also added that you (media) know what I am talking about, as some of those is- sues are there in the public domain and have been re- ported. He, however, didn’t divulge whether the dis- agreement was with the state or central leadership.

Tharoor also stressed on the importance of internal dialogue over public discourse and said, “I have been working in Congress for the past 16 years. I have some differences of opinion with the party, and I will discuss them inside the party… Today I don’t want to speak on it. I need to meet and talk, let the time come, and I will discuss it.”

Tharoor also urged the people to vote for Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath and dubbed him as a good candidate. He also said that party leaders and workers had worked a lot in the bypolls in Nilambur. His remarks came in the wake of criticism from his own party members when he had led an all-party delegation to five countries as part of global outreach programme to expose Pakistan on global platform and ex- plain India’s point in wake of Pahalgam terror attack and India carrying out Operation Sindoor.

Tharoor was also corrected by his own party leader after he said that India carried out surgical strikes for the first time after 2014.

</excerpt>

Shashi Tharoor was caught off guard when his son Ishaan asked a sharp question about Operation Sindoor at a Washington foreign policy event. Their warm exchange quickly went viral. At a diplomatic event in Washington, Shashi Tharoor was unexpectedly questioned by his son Ishaan Tharoor on India’s Operation Sindoor. The lighthearted father-son interaction has since captivated social media.

The Congress politician Shashi Tharoor was caught off guard when his son, Ishaan Tharoor, directly raised a question about Operation Sindoor during a high-profile all-party delegation meeting at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington. This hilarious father-son exchange was brought to light by Shashi Tharoor’s joking comment, “That shouldn’t be allowed,” has immediately gone viral on social media. Many people are calling it a touching and “epic” moment.

In the widely shared video, Shashi Tharoor is seen addressing a gathering of diplomats, journalists, and foreign policy experts when Ishaan, a global affairs columnist for The Washington Post, stands up to speak. Noticing his son, Tharoor said, “That shouldn’t be allowed. This is my son.” Ishaan smiled before proceeding to ask a pointed and well-phrased question that has since been praised online Ishaan inquired: “Ishaan Tharoor, Washington Post. Speaking personally and mostly to say hello before your next engagement, I’m curious—during your diplomatic tour across various Western Hemisphere countries, have any government officials asked you to provide proof of Pakistan’s involvement in the initial attack? And how do you respond to Pakistan’s repeated denials?”

Shashi Tharoor responded with good humor, “I’m very glad you raised this, Ishaan. I didn’t plant it, I promise you. This guy does this to his dad.” This exchange brought about applause and laughter from the audience.

After the lighthearted exchange , Tharoor addressed the question, affirming that no foreign interlocutors had demanded evidence regarding India’s claims. He highlighted that the Indian government had acted based on compelling proof and emphasised a 37-year pattern of terror attacks allegedly originating from Pakistan, along with repeated denials. He referenced past incidents, such as the Osama bin Laden raid and the 2008 Mumbai attacks, to underscore his point, noting Pakistan’s history of dispatching terrorists and denying involvement until incontrovertible evidence emerges.

</excerpt>

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor recently addressed young professionals in the US. He was part of an all-party delegation. During his speech, he explained India’s measured but firm response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

Initially, India showed restraint. However, it also made its position clear. “We felt we had no choice but to respond,” Tharoor said. He added that India sought “global understanding and solidarity” after the deadly incident.

India Seeks Growth, But Will Not Tolerate Terror

Tharoor emphasized that India focuses on economic progress and lifting people out of poverty. Still, he said the country cannot ignore cross-border threats. “If they allowed this to happen again, or they actually instigate it and direct it as this one seemed to have been, they will be hit back. We will hit back very hard… Do not take our patience for granted,” he warned.

According to Tharoor, India does not want to divert attention from development. “This is not something we would have wanted to spend our time on,” he said. Nevertheless, he noted that India must respond when its citizens are attacked. “We will not allow people to cross the border and kill our citizens with impunity,” he stressed.

Further Attacks Will Bring Consequences

Moreover, Tharoor warned that terrorism would not go unanswered. “There will be a price to pay,” he said. If Pakistan keeps supporting or directing such attacks, India will respond strongly, he cautioned.

India Holds Strong Evidence Against Pakistan

When asked if any nation demanded proof of Pakistan’s involvement, Tharoor clarified that none had. Still, he stated that India possesses credible evidence. He outlined three key points to support his claim.

To begin with, Tharoor pointed out Pakistan’s past behavior. He said the country often denies responsibility for terror until it’s caught. He gave the examples of the Mumbai attacks and Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Pakistan. “Pakistan denies involvement until they’re actually caught with red hands,” he noted.

Next, he referred to the Resistance Front’s role in the Pahalgam attack. The group claimed responsibility twice but later withdrew the statement. “The fact is credit claim was on record and the world has seen it,” he said.

Finally, Tharoor mentioned how Pakistani generals and police officers attended the funerals of members of terror outfits like Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba. These photos surfaced on social media soon after the attack.

India Acts Only With Just Cause

Tharoor underlined that India does not act without reason. “The government counted 24 terrorist attacks in the last year emanating from Pakistan, but none of them required this kind of response,” he explained. He made it clear that India strikes only when absolutely necessary.

</excerpt>

Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor, who is part of an all-party delegation of diplomats, on Monday, condemned China for supporting Pakistan in opposing mentions of terrorist organizations at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Calling out Beijing’s role in shielding the Lashkar-e-Taiba-backed ‘Resistance Front’ in the United Nations, “We have been reporting about RF to UN Sanctions Committee, time after time and when India encouraged our friends on the Security Council to mention the Resistance Front in the press statement that the Security Council issued.”

Shashi Tharoor takes dig at Islamabad and Beijing

“Pakistan government, I am sorry to say that with the support of your friend in China, took out the name, so there is not even a reference. We are not on the Security Council, and neither are you. We have to change that situation. Both of us should be on the Council together,” Tharoor said in a dig at Islamabad and Beijing.

Shashi Tharoor Call for UNSC Reforms

Shashi Tharoor said this while speaking with Ambassador Celso Amorim of Brazil and highlighted the difficulties faced by India in fighting terrorism internationally because of geopolitical alignments within the UNSC.

Tharoor’s remarks also emphasized a demand to reform the UNSC to reflect a more representative world presence.“We are not on the Security Council, neither are you. We have to change that situation. Both of us should be on the Council together,” he said to Amorim.

Indian Delegation Visits Brazil

The Congress MP-led delegation, headed by Shashi Tharoor, is currently in Brazil and will travel to the US tomorrow. The delegation was greeted at Brasilia airport by Sandeep Kumar Kujur, Charge d’Affaires in the Indian Embassy in Brazil.

Terror Attack in Colorado Alarms Indian MPs

Shashi Tharoor on Monday stated that members of the Indian MPs’ team learned with alarm about the terror attack in Colorado. They breathed a sigh of relief. There was no casualty.

In a post on X, Tharoor said that the MPs share the Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s view that ‘terror has no place’ in our countries.”

FBI Arrests Colorado Attack Suspect

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested a 45-year-old man, Mohamed Sabry Soliman. He carried out a “targeted terror attack” in Boulder, Colorado, on Sunday. He burned several peaceful supporters of Israel, according to Fox News. The FBI said the attack injured six individuals, aged 67 to 88 years, and hospitalized them for treatment.

</excerpt>

Congress member of parliament Shashi Tharoor has come to the defence of his recent statement made while abroad, which received flak from within the party, particularly from Udit Raj. The row erupted after Tharoor made remarks in Panama, where he reportedly said that India crossed the Line of Control (LoC) for the first time in 2016 during a surgical strike on a terror hub.

Taking to X, Tharoor made it clear that he was talking merely about retaliatory strikes following recent terror attacks and not historical wars. “Critics are free to twist my words, but I have better things to do,” he wrote, referencing a full agenda and an early morning flight to Colombia.

Tharoor, now at the helm of a multi-party delegation after Operation Sindoor, explicated his assertion further, asserting, “I was speaking only and explicitly of reprisals for terrorist attacks and not of earlier wars.” He also added, “My statement was preceded by an allusion to the various attacks that have occurred in recent years alone, when earlier Indian responses were both limited and circumscribed by our responsible respect for the LoC and the IB.”

Congress leader Udit Raj severely condemned Tharoor’s statement and blamed him for downplaying the party’s historical achievements. Referring to Tharoor’s tweet, Raj posted on X, “My dear Shashi Tharoor, Alas! I could prevail upon PM Modi to declare you as super spokesperson of BJP, even declaring (you) as foreign minister before landing in India. How could you denigrate the golden history of Congress by saying that before PM Modi , India never crossed LoC and International border.”

Alas ! I could prevail upon PM Modi to declare you as super spokesperson of BJP , even declaring as foreign minister before landing in India . How could you denigrate the golden history of Congress by saying that before PM Modi , India never crossed LOC… https://t.co/c88b8rX2bq

— Dr. Udit Raj (@Dr_Uditraj) May 28, 2025

He also pointed out India’s military interventions during the Congress regime, “In 1965 Indian Army entered Pakistan at multiple points, which completely surprised the Pakistanis in the Lahore sector. In 1971, India tore Pakistan in two pieces and during UPA government several surgical strikes were unleashed but drum beating was not done to encash (it) politically.”

Pawan Khera and Jairam Ramesh Join In

Congress media and publicity department chief Pawan Khera and General Secretary in-charge of Communications Jairam Ramesh also joined in on the matter. Khera tweeted a photo of Indian Army officers in front of a captured Pakistani police station in Burki during the 1965 Indo-Pak war. “This photo is from the Battle of Burki. An important battle of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965,” Khera added.

In another tweet, Khera cited a media report in which former PM Manmohan Singh allegedly confirmed that the UPA government conducted several surgical strikes. “Former PM Manmohan Singh: Many Surgical Strikes Conducted Under UPA…. CC @ShashiTharoor,” Khera posted.

Jairam Ramesh re-shared Khera’s post, reflecting wider disenchantment among Congress members over Tharoor’s statement.

Earlier Spat Over Intelligence Comments

This is not the first time Udit Raj has had a run-in with Tharoor. It was last month that Raj scolded Tharoor for his comments on intelligence agencies after the Pahalgam terror attack. Tharoor had uttered, “No country has 100 per cent foolproof intelligence.”

Raj replied by blaming Tharoor for being the BJP’s ally: “Shashi Tharoor said no country has 100 per cent foolproof intelligence? During the 26/11 Mumbai attack, Modi ji had spoken. It is the central government’s failure.”

Tharoor brushed aside the criticism by highlighting Raj’s history, “Udit Raj is an ex-BJP MP and is better placed to know who speaks for the BJP.”

Tharoor Compares DOGE to Buddhism in Panama

In Panama, while speaking, Tharoor, in a tongue-in-cheek moment, equated the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to Buddhism. “DOGE is a way of life, much like Buddhism. Do you need Buddha for Buddhism? Wasn’t Buddhism more powerful after he died?” he responded when someone asked him who would head DOGE after him.

Party leaders criticized Tharoor, a leading figure in post-attack diplomatic efforts, even as he asserted Indian resilience abroad. Udit Raj nevertheless asserted that Tharoor only used his words to compliment Prime Minister Modi during an international tour aimed at exposing Pakistan.

‘If they hit us again…’: Shashi Tharoor Warns Pakistan

<excerpt>India seeks peace but won’t hesitate to strike harder if provoked again, says Shashi Tharoor at Guyana forum.
</excerpt>

Congress member Shashi Tharoor has given a stern warning to Pakistan, stating that India will strike back hard if repeatedly taunted. Addressing a diplomatic conference in Guyana, Tharoor emphasized that India’s recent counter-terrorism operations were not a step towards war but a retaliatory action for the Pahalgam terrorist attack.

Operation Sindoor was a retaliatory, not an escalatory operation

Tharoor made it clear that Operation Sindoor, which resulted in the targeting of nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), was not the beginning of a long military campaign.

“We had no wish to give the impression that it was the opening shot in what was intended to be a kind of long war,” he said.
“Every strike was retaliatory, every action India took was only because of Pakistan.”

India prioritized peace in international diplomatic efforts

Tharoor highlighted that India made its peaceful intentions clear to global actors during the operation.

“When governments called us to convey concern, we made exactly this message clear throughout, that we are not interested in war,” he declared.

India’s diplomatic strategy in the military action underlined the country’s adherence to deterrence, not aggression. In Tharoor’s assertion, hostilities were stopped when Pakistan made contact.

“If Pakistan stopped, we had no reason to retaliate, and that finally is what happened on the morning of the 10th of May, Indian time, they called our Director General of Military Operations.”

Islamabad’s backchannel approach ended escalation

A turning point was reached when Pakistan established backchannel communication, looking for de-escalation. This saved the day after Operation Sindoor.

Inside Operation Sindoor: Focused, precise and targeted

Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, was India’s surgical strike against terrorist groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. The operation was aimed against infrastructure in Pakistan and PoK and was crafted meticulously to be “focused, measured and non-escalatory.”

Tharoor’s last message: Peace with strength

While reaffirming India’s enthusiasm for peace, Tharoor also indicated severe repercussions in case of another attack.

“We are peaceful today, and we would like to continue being peaceful. That’s also a very powerful message, but we would like to continue being in peace with strength, as your President stated yesterday, and not through fear,” he said.
“We are not fearful that these individuals would strike us again. If they strike us again, they’re going to receive it back worse.”

Parliamentary delegation to visit Panama with united message

Tharoor is scheduled to head an all-party parliamentary delegation to Panama soon to emphasize India’s zero-tolerance approach to terrorism. The delegation will interact with Panamanian leadership, media, strategic communities, and the Indian diaspora.

The delegation consists of members from prominent political parties like BJP, JMM, TDP, Shiv Sena, and India’s former ambassador to the US, Taranjit Sandhu. The Indian Embassy in its reports says the visit will reaffirm India’s solidarity and international position against terrorism in all its forms.

</excerpt>

India is sending a strong message to Pakistan and the rest of the world: terror will not be tolerated any longer. Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor, who is leading an all-party parliamentary delegation across the North American continents, told a crowd in New York that no one should believe that they can “Just walk across the border and kill Indian citizens with impunity.” The Indian Consulate General hosted an interactive session during which the remarks were made.

The trip is a component of India’s international diplomatic endeavor to defend its military response through Operation Sindoor and to refute Pakistan’s narrative in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack.

India’s Firm Warning to Pakistan

Shashi Tharoor established a new foundation for India’s security posture. He said Pakistan must realize that India will no longer tolerate assaults on its territory. “A new norm is going to emerge,” he stated. “There will be a cost, and that cost has been steadily increasing.”

He clarified that India did not incite violence. “All we were doing was giving terrorists a message. “You started,” we said. He recalled the events leading up to the 88-hour military response, known as Operation Sindoor, following the attack in Kashmir on April 22 and declared, “If you stop, we stop.”

Operation Sindoor Defended Abroad

Shashi Tharoor clarified in his speech that Operation Sindoor was a defensive operation. “It was a reluctant but necessary reply,” he said. The goal of the operation was to restore peace and stop additional cross-border terrorist attacks. He claimed that despite the deaths, India’s resolve strengthened.

Additionally, the Congress MP emphasized that India’s priorities differ from those of its neighbors. “We are investing in technology, lifting millions out of poverty, and development,” he stated. He emphasized India’s resolve to become the free-market democracy with the fastest rate of growth.

Unified Diplomatic Front

Together with former ambassador Taranjit Sandhu, the Indian delegation comprised lawmakers from the BJP, Congress, Shiv Sena, TDP, and JMM. Guyana, Panama, Colombia, Brazil, and the United States are all part of their mission. They will travel to Guyana after New York and then return to the United States on June 3.

India’s united front demonstrates the bipartisan nature of the message: Pakistan will suffer real repercussions and terrorism will not be tolerated.

Shashi Tharoor: Pakistan Lost Its ‘Last Opportunity’ After Pathankot Attack

<excerpt>Shashi Tharoor recalls Pathankot attack, says Pakistan lost its last chance to prove sincerity in fighting terrorism.
</excerpt>

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, while addressing a community event in New York on Saturday, launched a sharp criticism of Pakistan’s handling of terrorism, citing the 2016 Pathankot airbase attack as a turning point. Speaking as part of a multi-party delegation promoting India’s anti-terror stance globally, Shashi Tharoor said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s December 2015 visit to Pakistan was a final gesture of goodwill, which Islamabad failed to reciprocate.

Shashi Tharoor Slams Pakistani Investigators’ Role

“In January [2016], there was an attack on the Indian Air Base, and our Prime Minister had just made a visit to Pakistan the previous month,” Shashi Tharoor said. “Imagine the horror of the Indian military establishment when Pakistani investigators were allowed into our airbases, only for them to return home and blame Indians for the attack.”

The Pathankot terror attack, carried out on January 2, 2016, saw four heavily armed militants from the United Jihad Council breach the Indian Air Force’s Western Command base. Seven Indian security personnel were killed in the confrontation. The attack came just days after Modi’s surprise Christmas Day visit to Lahore, where he met then-Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif a move widely seen as an attempt to revive stalled peace talks.

Pakistan Failed to Honour Probe Agreement says Shashi Tharoor

Following the attack, a Pakistani Joint Investigation Team (JIT) was granted unprecedented access to the airbase to conduct a probe. India’s National Investigation Agency was meant to carry out a reciprocal visit, but Pakistan reneged on the agreement and failed to share any meaningful evidence, further straining diplomatic ties.

Speaking at the event hosted by the Consulate General of India in New York and attended by members of the Indian-American community, media professionals, and policy experts, Shashi Tharoor reiterated India’s position: “We didn’t want to start anything. We were just sending a message to terrorists.”

Global Outreach Against Terrorism

The New York stop was part of India’s broader diplomatic campaign titled “Taking Bharat’s Message to the World,” aimed at consolidating international support against terrorism and exposing Pakistan’s alleged complicity. Seven all-party delegations have been dispatched to 33 capitals globally following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 civilians dead.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed appreciation for the delegations, posting on X: “India stands together in declaring zero tolerance for terrorism.”

In Bahrain, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi emphasized that India’s message is unified across party lines. “The terrorists have justified the killing of innocent people in India… there is no difference between terrorists in Pakistan and the ISIS takfiri ideology,” he said.

Parallel delegations in South Korea, Slovenia, and Qatar echoed this sentiment. In Seoul, JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha discussed “Operation Sindoor” India’s retaliatory airstrikes following the Pahalgam attack. In Doha, NCP MP Supriya Sule met with Qatari lawmakers, while DMK MP Kanimozhi led engagements in Slovenia.

Military Tensions and Diplomatic Resolution

The coordinated diplomatic push comes in the wake of escalating military tensions, which saw India conduct airstrikes on May 7 targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Retaliatory Pakistani attempts to strike Indian military sites on May 8, 9, and 10 were firmly repelled. The standoff was defused following DGMO-level talks on May 10.

All delegations have underscored the role of the Indian diaspora as a “force multiplier,” urging communities abroad to shape global discourse on terrorism and amplify India’s position.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, heading an all-party Indian delegation, declared that India will not remain silent in the face of terrorism. Speaking at the 9/11 Memorial in New York, he called on the global community to unite in solidarity and strength against terror.

India Stands in Solidarity with Terror Victims

Tharoor emphasized that India, like the US, has repeatedly faced brutal terror attacks. He described the visit to the memorial as a “solemn reminder” of shared suffering and resilience. “We have come in a spirit of solidarity, and at the same time, on a mission,” he said.

Delegation to Visit Latin America After US Stop

The delegation will visit Guyana, Panama, Brazil, and Colombia after their US visit. Tharoor said they plan to explain how vital it is for nations to stand together against terrorism. He drew parallels with the US response to 9/11 and India’s reaction to the recent April 22 attack.

India Will Not Tolerate Repeat Attacks

Tharoor warned that India will not remain passive if similar attacks occur again. “This is not a time for indifference,” he said, urging the world to show collective strength and defend democratic values, freedom, diversity, and peaceful coexistence—principles he said the attackers reject.

Terror Perpetrators and Supporters Must Face Justice

Tharoor stressed that India will continue to pursue those responsible for the April 22 attack. He also called for accountability for those who provide training, funding, and shelter to terrorists. “We are not going to stop our hunt,” he declared.

UN Sanctions Insufficient Without Direct Action

He pointed out that about 52 individuals and organisations based in Pakistan had once been listed by the UN Sanctions Committee. However, he argued that diplomacy and sanctions aren’t enough. “We are also going to exercise our right to self-defence, which every country recognises,” he added.

Tharoor Urges Indian Diaspora to Amplify India’s Message

Tharoor asked the Indian diaspora in the US to help shape public and political opinion. “You are a very influential diaspora. You’re active in public life and politics. You’re a force multiplier for us,” he told them. He encouraged them to spread awareness about the threats India faces.

Delegation Represents National Unity Against Terror

The delegation includes MPs from across party lines: Shambhavi Chaudhary (LJP), Sarfaraz Ahmed (JMM), G M Harish Balayagi (TDP), Shashank Mani Tripathi, Tejaswi Surya, Bhubaneswar K Lata (BJP), Mallikarjun Devda (Shiv Sena), and former Indian Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu. The team aims to present India’s united stance and zero-tolerance policy on terrorism to the world.

</excerpt>

Following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, India has taken a strong diplomatic step. The government has formed seven delegations of Members of Parliament (MPs) to travel across the world. Their mission is to expose Pakistan-backed terrorism and share evidence directly with foreign governments and global institutions.

These delegations aim to build international support and clarify India’s position on the growing terror threat. They also seek to counter any misinformation being spread internationally.

Shashi Tharoor Chosen for US Despite Internal Party Criticism

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor will lead the delegation to the United States. Interestingly, this comes at a time when Tharoor is under fire within his own party for his recent remarks on India-Pakistan relations. Still, the government has picked him for this key diplomatic task, showing that national security is taking precedence over political differences.

Multi-Party Team to Show United Indian Front

The government selected leaders from multiple parties to show that India’s response to terrorism is bipartisan. Each delegation includes MPs, senior political leaders, and experienced diplomats. The goal is to present a unified Indian voice abroad.

Here are the MPs leading each international delegation:

Shashi Tharoor (Congress) – United States

Ravi Shankar Prasad (BJP)

Sanjay Kumar Jha (JDU)

Baijayant ‘Jay’ Panda (BJP) – Western Europe

Kanimozhi Karunanidhi (DMK)

Supriya Sule (NCP) – South Africa and Egypt

Shrikant Eknath Shinde (Shiv Sena) – UAE and Africa

Delegates Assigned to Key Regions

According to government sources, each delegation has a specific region of focus. For example:

Supriya Sule will meet leaders in South Africa and Egypt.

Jay Panda will take India’s message to Germany, France, and the UK.

Shrikant Shinde will travel to the United Arab Emirates and other African nations.

Tharoor will meet officials and think tanks in Washington DC and New York.

Focus on Pahalgam Attack and Cross-Border Terror

The delegations will present strong evidence about the Pahalgam attack, which India blames on Pakistan-based groups. They will also explain how terrorism affects regional peace and India’s internal security. Many of these meetings will take place at embassies, global forums, and think tanks.

Why This Outreach Matters Now

This diplomatic effort comes at a critical time. India recently closed the Attari-Wagah border after the Pahalgam attack. The region is already tense due to accusations that Pakistan is trying to create distrust between India and Afghanistan. India hopes these global meetings will help build partnerships in counter-terrorism and improve its image in the international community.

Earlier this week, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. Jaishankar said, “Underlined our traditional friendship with the Afghan people and continued support for their development needs. Discussed ways and means of taking cooperation forward.” He also welcomed Muttaqi’s “firm rejection” of false reports linking India to missile strikes in Afghanistan.

India’s Broader Strategy

India has often used parliamentary diplomacy to build global alliances. By involving opposition leaders in its outreach, it signals unity and transparency. Additionally, it ensures that the international community sees India’s response as a national issue—not just a government initiative.

This move also comes ahead of important international events like the United Nations General Assembly and G20 engagements, where India wants strong global backing against terrorism.

</excerpt>

Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor on Thursday declared that he had defended the BJP-ruled central government regarding Operation Sindoor as an Indian, and was not his party’s spokesperson following reports which indicated that high-ranking party officials felt that he had gone beyond a “Lakshman Rekha.”

Spoke as an Indian, Not as Party Representative: Shashi Tharoor

Shashi Tharoor said, “At this time, at a time of conflict, I spoke as an Indian. I never pretended to speak for anyone else, I am not a spokesperson for the party. I am not the government spokesperson. Whatever I have said, you may agree or disagree with that, blame it on me individually, and that’s fine.”

Emphasis on National Unity During Global Discourse

Shashi Tharoor said he was articulating his own opinion at a moment when it was necessary for everyone to rally together as Indians, particularly at the international level.

He said, “I made it very clear that I am expressing my personal views. It was really a contribution to the national discourse, at a time when it was very important for us to rally around the flag, especially internationally. There was a relative lack of our point of view being heard, particularly in the US, Europe, and the Middle East.”

When asked about reports that senior party leaders were disappointed with his remarks, he said, “People are entirely free to reject my point of view. I have received no communication from the party; all I am seeing is media reports.”

CWC Cautions Against Crossing the Party Line

The Congress Working Committee meeting on Wednesday had cautioned members to follow the party line and not express individual opinions.

“We are a democratic party and people keep expressing their opinions, but this time, Shashi Tharoor has crossed the lakshman rekha,” a senior party leader was quoted saying as per news agency PTI.

Congress Separates from Shashi Tharoor Over Trump Criticism Amid BJP Tensions

Congress’s communications secretary Jairam Ramesh also responded to Tharoor’s statement in a press briefing and stated, “That is his opinion. Whatever Mr. Tharoor says, it is his opinion and it is not the party stand.”

</excerpt>

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has come out in the open to praise the Modi government and the Indian army for Operation Sindoor, a daring and swift strike on terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. The operation was launched on Wednesday. Indian forces struck nine terror camps in 25 minutes. The attack followed the heinous Pahalgam terror attack of April 22 that killed 26 civilians.

Shashi Tharoor’s support was particularly noteworthy—providing a rare bipartisan support to a counter-terror operation and a flash of political solidarity in the war against terrorism in India.

Operation Sindoor: Forces in Full Sync

The Indian Army, Air Force, and Indian Navy operated in close tandem. The Air Force launched air-to-surface missiles. Ground-based systems were used by the Army. Naval intelligence monitored the movement of terrorists and identified targets. Collectively, they destroyed nine camps of Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.

The camps were associated with the Pahalgam massacre. According to officials, more than 80 terrorists were killed. Crucially, the operation did not target civilian regions.

Shashi Tharoor’s ‘Shabhashi’: A Political Move

Shashi Tharoor went to X to compliment the name of the operation. He described it as “brilliant” and “evocative.” He posted a picture of a just-widowed bride from Pahalgam and said that it represented the agony behind the necessity of this strike. “The fact that sindoor is blood red also sends a telling message. Shabash to whoever thought of it!” he posted.

Clever, esp given the government’s penchant for creative acronyms!
But jokes apart, #OperationSindoor is a brilliant name. It evokes the image, seared into our national consciousness, of the newly-widowed bride, kneeling and weeping by the side of her assassinated husband of six… https://t.co/uaDt1UwHUP

— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) May 7, 2025

His words not only complimented the forces. They also expressed solidarity with the government’s daring response.

A post that went viral on the internet jokingly proposed an acronym for ‘Sindoor’: Strategic Initiative for Neutralizing Destructive Opponents with Overwhelming Retaliation. Shashi Tharoor reacted in a light vein. He dismissed the suggestion as a stretch but described it as fitting the government’s fondness for acronyms. He still complimented the idea behind the codename.

India Remains Calm, Pakistan Responds Harshly

India termed the operation as precise and non-escalatory. The government emphasized that it did not target civilians by choosing targets with care. However, Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif labeled the action a “blatant act of war” and warned of retaliation. Pakistan claimed 26 fatalities and 46 injuries but did not specify whether the dead were militants or civilians.

Apart from its battlefield victory, Operation Sindoor did the unthinkable—it united political opponents. Tharoor’s open endorsement proved that, even when deeply divided, there are still some causes that can unite leaders. Amidst the high-pitched political atmosphere of modern times, such a coming together on national security is a strong message: India is united against terror.

</excerpt>

Reflecting on his appearance alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an event in Kerala, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor emphasised that the Vizhinjam Seaport, long envisioned by the people of Kerala, demonstrates how national development can transcend party lines.

Speaking to ANI, Tharoor highlighted the Vizhinjam Seaport project as a symbol of cooperative federalism, praising its successful commissioning in Thiruvananthapuram despite political differences.

“Yesterday, the Prime Minister came to Thiruvanathapuram, and we saw the official commissioning of the Vizhinjam Seaport. The port has been a dream of the people of Vizhinjam and Thiruvanathapuram, my constituency, and Kerala for a very, very long time. A project initiated by a Congress government was continued by a Communist Left front government and then commissioned by a BJP government in the centre,” Tharoor said.

“That is a very good example of how we can focus on development for the benefit of the nation ahead of whatever political issues may divide us,” he said.
On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a political jibe at the Opposition INDIA bloc during the inauguration of the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram stating that the presence of Shashi Tharoor on stage “would disturb the sleep” of many people.

In his address during the public event after the inauguration, PM Modi said, “I want to tell Chief Minister (Pinarayi Vijayan), you are a strong pillar of INDI alliance, Shashi Tharoor is also sitting here.”

“Today’s event is going to disturb the sleep of many”, Prime Minister Modi said.

Tharoor, a four-time Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, had recently praised the PM Modi-led Central government over his remarks on the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. Tharoor had also been criticised by his party colleagues over PM Modi’s diplomatic tasks with US President Donald Trump.

The ceremony, attended by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, provided Modi with the opportunity to make a political dig at the INDIA bloc.

The comments, even facetiously, betrayed the underlying political strains, particularly since the project has been constructed by the Adani Group — a common target of the INDIA bloc for charges of crony capitalism.

Mixed Signals by Shashi Tharoor Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections

Shashi Tharoor, who is the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency, has recently volunteered admiration for the Modi government on a string of foreign policy moves, including India’s approach to the Russia-Ukraine war and diplomatic outreach to former US President Donald Trump.

Tharoor’s perceived bipartisan tone prompted BJP’s Kerala unit president Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who had previously contested against him, to describe him as “one of the few sane voices in Congress.” Chandrasekhar also attended the inauguration along with Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas and several state ministers.

Adani’s Mega Port Project Commissioned

PM Modi formally inaugurated the project with Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani and other officials. The port, developed at an estimated cost of ₹8,867 crore, has been created by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) through a public-private partnership.

The port was awarded its commercial commissioning certificate on December 4, 2024. As a deep-water transshipment hub, Vizhinjam will likely increase India’s contribution to world maritime trade and cut down reliance on overseas ports for handling cargo.

Welcome of Shashi Tharoor and Delhi Airport Jibe

Earlier today, Tharoor greeted PM Modi in Kerala and shared photos on X, observing that he “managed to land in time” after there were delays at the “dysfunctional Delhi airport.” He credited his punctual arrival to luck and changing flight routes, while taking a jab at airport operations.

DIAL had on Wednesday issued an advisory regarding wind pattern changes and runway closure, which resulted in a number of delays, although not on Thursday.

Tharoor also took pride in the port project, saying he has been “proudly” involved since its beginning.

</excerpt>

Shashi Tharoor’s recent statement about India’s foreign policy, particularly regarding its balanced approach to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, suggests a shift in perspective within the opposition. While he had initially criticized India’s stance in 2022, he now acknowledges that the policy has strengthened India’s global position.

However, whether the entire opposition in India accepts this viewpoint is a different question. While some leaders, including Tharoor, might recognize India’s growing diplomatic influence, many opposition parties continue to question aspects of the government’s foreign policy, especially concerning economic and strategic interests.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor reiterated his position on India’s diplomatic approach, stating that his earlier comments required no further explanation. Speaking to ANI, he said, “The comments speak for themselves. Nothing to add.”

Admitting a Change in Opinion

During a panel discussion at the Raisina Dialogue, Sashi Tharoor reflected on his previous stance regarding India’s neutral position in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He admitted that he had initially criticized the government’s approach in February 2022 but now recognized the benefits of India’s diplomatic balance.

“I am still wiping the egg off my face because I was one person in the parliamentary debate who actually criticised the Indian position at the time back in February 2022,” he said.

BJP Reacts to Tharoor’s Statement

BJP leader Amit Malviya took a swipe at Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi following Tharoor’s remarks. He claimed that Tharoor’s statement could put the Congress party in an awkward position, prompting its media department to clarify that these were his personal views and not the party’s official stance.

“This will likely leave Rahul Gandhi red-faced, with the Congress media department scrambling to clarify that Shashi Tharoor’s remarks reflect his personal views—not the party’s official stance—despite Tharoor having led the party’s charge on the issue in Parliament,” Malviya posted on X.

He further pointed out that Tharoor had now admitted his mistake in opposing India’s neutral stance, acknowledging that this policy allowed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to maintain strong diplomatic ties with both Ukraine and Russia.

Tharoor’s Justification for His Initial Criticism

Tharoor explained why he had originally condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine. He argued that India’s foreign policy had traditionally supported the principles of sovereignty and non-aggression.

“There was a violation of the UN Charter, sovereignty of a member state, namely Ukraine. We had always stood for the inviolability of borders of a sovereign state, the inadmissibility of the use of force to settle international disputes, and all of those principles had been violated by one party, and we should have condemned it,” he said.

However, he now acknowledged that India’s neutral approach had given it a unique advantage. He stated, “Well, three years later, it does look like I am the one with egg on my face because clearly, the policy has meant that India actually has a Prime Minister who can hug both the president of Ukraine and the president of Moscow two weeks apart and be accepted in both places. Therefore, India is in a position where it can make a difference to a lasting peace if it was so required in ways that very few countries would be able to.”

</excerpt>

Is 68-year-old Shashi Tharoor, who reigns in the hearts of the youths, rebelling against the Congress these days? I don’t think so at all. He is a good friend of mine, and I know his nature very closely. Shashi Tharoor is a highly outspoken person who never hesitates in speaking the truth. His personality is so impressive that any political party would want to have him on its side — he is popular across party lines. Despite this, if he remains with Congress, it is because of his deep understanding of the party’s core principles. Speaking the truth can never be considered a rebellion!
When Shashi Tharoor contested for the post of Congress president, his aim was to attract the youths and infuse new energy and vigour into the party. Many people still believe that if Tharoor had become the president of the party, Congress’ position would have been entirely different. We are all well aware of Tharoor’s multifaceted personality — he stands out in a crowd. Yet, if he feels that the party is not making proper use of his abilities and that he has been sidelined after contesting the party president’s post, this is a great loss for the Congress itself. I have no hesitation in saying that Congress currently lacks a leader of Tharoor’s stature. He understands not only the pulse of the country but is also not aloof to that of the world.

Another remarkable quality of his is that despite being so knowledgeable, he never imposes his intellect on others. His behaviour is simple and humble. The idea of bringing Shashi Tharoor into politics first came to Dr Manmohan Singh. Since 2009, he has been consecutively elected as a Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram on Congress ticket. In Manmohan Singh’s cabinet, he served as the Minister of State for External Affairs and later as the Minister of State for Human Resource Development. Considering his capabilities, he should have been given a cabinet rank, but he never made such a demand. What deeply troubled him, however, was that a faction within Congress was constantly targeting Dr Manmohan Singh. This sycophantic faction could never tolerate Shashi Tharoor. He was also an active participant in Ghulam Nabi Azad’s G-23 group, where he raised critical questions about the party leadership. Naturally, this faction remains displeased with him even today.

About two weeks ago, Shashi Tharoor called on Rahul Gandhi. He told Rahul that he was not being given the opportunity to speak during important debates in Parliament and that he was continuously being overlooked. What Rahul Gandhi replied is not known, but I have never understood how any party could ignore a leader like Tharoor. With a speaker of his calibre, the party could make a strong impact. From 2014 to 2019, Mallikarjun Kharge was made the leader of the parliamentary party, and from 2019 to 2024, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was given that role — when actually a powerful orator like Shashi Tharoor was present in the House! Just recall the moment when Tharoor stood at Oxford and delivered a fact-based speech on Britain’s exploitation of India — the entire nation applauded! That’s because he speaks with solid facts.

In the past few years, Congress has made many internal changes. Recently, two new general secretaries were appointed, and several state in-charges were reshuffled. Yet, there was neither a place for Tharoor, nor was it contemplated. In fact, the All India Professionals’ Congress (AIPC), which was entirely his creation, was taken away from him!
Shashi Tharoor praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US recently, calling it a success. He wrote, “Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with US President Donald Trump has resulted in some important outcomes that are beneficial for the people of our country. I believe something positive has been achieved, and as an Indian, I appreciate it. I have spoken entirely in the national interest in this matter.”

Earlier, he had also praised Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. In one of his articles, he commended Kerala’s leftist government, stating that the state was well-positioned to lead India’s technological and industrial transformation.
These statements caused outrage within the Congress. Amid this controversy, Tharoor responded, saying, “I am with Congress, but if the party does not need me, I also have options.” Tharoor speaks with such confidence because of his strong grassroot support. His victory from the Thiruvananthapuram parliamentary seat, even during the Modi wave, proves his strong connection with the electorate. He wants Congress to contest next year’s Kerala Assembly elections under his leadership to ensure victory. But does the party care?

I keep wondering as to why the Congress, which was once the heartbeat of the nation, has not returned to power in Tamil Nadu for 58 years, in West Bengal for 48 years, in Kerala for 41 years, in Uttar Pradesh for 36 years, in Bihar for 35 years, in Gujarat for 30 years, and in Odisha for 25 years! In Delhi, the party has been wiped out. It is out of power in Punjab. In Maharashtra, the party is in shambles. What has happened to the Congress? Millions of party workers are asking the same question. But does the top leadership ever reflect on this? Answering this question is difficult! For now, pay heed to what Shashi Tharoor recently posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Where ignorance is bliss, ’Tis folly to be wise.’’

</excerpt>

There has been a lot of media speculation on what congress leader & four term MP from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor will do next. And with reason. Recently Tharoor had a meeting with Rahul Gandhi and soon after, details of the meeting were leaked to the media; since neither Rahul nor Tharoor spoke about it, the leak could have originated from a party general secretary close to Rahul Gandhi; someone who has a vested interest in seeing Tharoor fall. According to the leak, Tharoor asked Rahul Gandhi for a definitive role within the party. He is reportedly keen to be projected as the Congress candidate for the next chief minister of Kerala (the state goes to polls next year). Apparently Rahul told him that the Congress does not usually project a CM face at the time of campaigning. This has been interpreted as a sign of no confidence in Tharoor’s candidature and could be one reason behind his revolt.

First the revolt. Of late Tharoor has been voicing opinions that are not in sync with the party line. He praised the Prime Minister’s visit to the United States (and we all know how any praise of the PM goes down with Rahul Gandhi). He also praised the Pinarayi Vijayan led LDF government’s entrepreneurial policies in Kerala even though the Congress is not in alliance with the CPM in the state. Both these actions have not gone down well with the Congress. No surprise there, so then why is Tharoor flirting with the enemy?

Well, ever since he contested the Presidential Election against the current Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge (who was the Establishment’s choice), Tharoor has been feeling sidelined within the party. His candid talk and the issues he raised about inner party democracy could be one reason for this as he certainly hit a chord, garnering about 11% of the votes (the highest by any challenger ever). Even prior to his contesting the elections he was part of the G 23 group that signed a letter to the party leadership flagging concerns about the way the party was being lead. Since then the leadership (read Rahul Gandhi more than Sonia) has treated him somewhat warily. Add to this the fact that KC Venugopal, one of Tharoor’s rivals in the state Congress in Kerala holds a powerful post within the organization and is one of Rahul’s most trusted aides. There are a dozen ways in which Tharoor can be used by the party for he is articulate, media savvy and has a following that goes beyond the Congress base. Moreover, the issues that he has been raising are those which many Congress leaders have been muttering about, but not flagging for fear of losing whatever plum post they currently hold.
But for the Congress to make a comeback Rahul needs to look beyond the echo chamber and hear voices that are not in sync with his. To argue that Tharoor is not toeing the party line would be very well if the said party line had been arrived at after much debate and discussion within the Congress or at least its working committee. Instead it is issued as a diktat from the powers that be. This is also the way that the BJP works for there is certainly no inner party democracy in the Modi-Shah set up. But the BJP workers take the diktat even if they don’t agree with it, because its a line that helps them win elections. So either Rahul will have to find a line that wins elections or else involve more voices in the decision making, even those that do not agree with him.

As for Tharoor , he has said in a recent podcast that while he is available to the party he has `options’ if the Congress didn’t want to utilize his services. In that he is not exaggerating for he has enough political and non-political options. As to the former, parties like the TMC and the BJP would be happy to offer him a Rajya Sabha at the very least. Only a word of caution, will Tharoor be able to speak as freely in either outfit, the way he does in the Congress? Clearly the best way out for both Tharoor and the Congress would be to find a palatable working equation and figure out a way to co-exist. Would he be such a disastrous choice as the Congress party’s CM face for Kerala? Looking at the options, he certainly stands tallest amongst his state rivals both in terms of mass appeal and leadership credentials. Let that not be a handicap any longer.

</excerpt>

New Delhi: Amid reports of asking for more prominent role in the party, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Monday said that economic development should, as far as possible, be above the petty divisions of party politics.

Tharoor, who has maintained silence over the reports of his displeasure with the party and seeking more prominent role ahead of the crucial assembly polls scheduled later next year in Kerala, in a post on X, formerly Twitter shared a newsreport titled Left, BJP and Congress share stage during Kerala’s investors meet.

In his post, the four time Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthpuram said, “Good to see this. Economic development should, as far as possible, be above the petty divisions of party politics.”

His remarks came a day after he arrived back in the national capital from Kerala.

The senior Congress leader had met Leader of Opposotion Rahul Gandhi at his residence over the reports of Kerala state leadership raising eyebrows on him for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi after US President Donald Trump described him as a better negotiator.

The state leadership had also questioned Tharoor for praising the LDF government in the state in his article.

However, what the two leaders discussed is yet unknown. But sources claimed that Tharoor during his meeting clarified to party leadership about his side of the story and also demanded for prominent role.

The senior Congress leader had contested the party’s presidential polls against Mallikarjun Kharge.

He was replaced by Praveen Chakravarty as the chairman of All India Professional Congress.

Even as the crucial assembly polls in Kerala is scheduled in 2026, the party wants to go into the polls with a united face.

During the ongoing row, he broke his silence on the topic over his praiseful remarks on the rival government.

Shashi Tharoor’s Reply

Tharoor stated “If the party wants me then I will be there for the party. If not, I have my own things to do. You should not think that I don’t have any option to spend time. I have options. I have my books, speeches, invitations from across the world for talks,”

“if the party wishes to leverage my leadership, I am willing, but if not, I have OTHER OPTIONS.”

~ Now he dodges questions by saying NO COMMENTS. Is Tharoor heading towards the Communists or NDA? ?pic.twitter.com/dNlZGUrVKP

During the 2024 Lok Sabha Election, Congress had a resurgence but it was not able to translate into the next state polls. Shashi Tharoor stressed that Congress needs to widen its reach in Kerala or else they would be in opposition for the third term in a row.

Tharoor also added that Congress cannot win elections at this rate with the support of his current support base. He further added “At the national level, the Congress vote was around 19%. Would we be fine with our own vote base? Only if we get 26-27% additional, we can come to power. We need those who have not backed us in the last two elections.”

“I came back to this country to serve it. I was doing well in the US and earning a lot of money,” he added.

</excerpt>

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor defended his praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s US visit and Kerala’s Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, he explained his approach to politics.

“For 16 years, I have been in politics. Whenever a government, whether ours or another party’s, does something right, we should acknowledge it. However, when they do something wrong, we should criticize it,” Tharoor said.

Moreover, he argued that extreme praise or constant criticism would make him lose credibility. “There’s got to be some give and take in democracy,” he added.

Concerns Over Modi’s US Visit

Although Tharoor admitted the visit had positive outcomes, he pointed out unresolved issues. He questioned why India’s deportation of illegal immigrants was not addressed.

“Why did the question of the way in which those illegal immigrants were returned to India not get addressed?… Did PM Modi raise it behind closed doors?” he asked.

Nevertheless, he welcomed the nine-month negotiation period on trade and tariffs. According to him, this was better than Washington imposing sudden tariffs, which could have hurt India’s exports.

Tharoor Supports Bipartisanship

Furthermore, Tharoor emphasized that national interests should come before party politics. “It seems to me that something good has been achieved, and I applaud that as an Indian. We can’t always speak only in terms of party interests,” he said.

Tharoor’s Earlier Remarks and Congress’ Reaction

Earlier on Friday, Tharoor praised Modi’s US visit, saying key concerns were addressed. He noted that the joint press conference showed productive talks.

“To hear a man like Donald Trump, whose defence secretary yesterday (Thursday) called him the greatest negotiator in the world, announcing that the Indian prime minister was a better negotiator than he was, that sounds like something Mr Modi can put in the bank, that sounds very good,” he had said.

In addition, Tharoor wrote an article appreciating Kerala’s startup growth under the LDF government. However, Kerala Congress leaders strongly opposed his remarks.

Congress Leaders Object

According to Onmanorama, the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) sent a letter of dissent against Tharoor to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) High Command.

Meanwhile, Congress leader VD Satheesan questioned Tharoor’s data on Kerala’s startup economy. He raised doubts about the accuracy of the figures.

</excerpt>

On Tuesday, a Delhi court threw out a criminal defamation suit BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar filed against Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. Headed by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Paras Dalal, the court found that the complaint did not have enough cause for defamation and refused to provide Tharoor with summons.

In April 2024, Chandrasekhar had charged Tharoor of defamatory remarks against him and falsely claiming he had given cash to voters during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Chandrasekhar petitioned a court order prohibiting more defamatory comments, a public apology, and for ₹10 crore in reimbursement for the damage done to his good name.

In a connected issue, the Delhi High Court called Tharoor in a different defamation case whereby Chandrasekhar has once more requested ₹10 crore in losses for the supposed defamation to his reputation. The following hearing is set for 28 April 2025 by the High Court.

</excerpt>

India’s worsening air quality has been on the politics’ table for quite some time now. At the sixth rountable of AirQualityAsia on Tuesday headed by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor ways to combat air pollution in the country were discussed by top scientists and policy makers at the India International Centre, New Delhi.

Taking to his official handle on X, Shashi Tharoor posted, “On Thursday evening in Delhi, I chaired the sixth in the series of roundtables I’ve been organising since 2017 on my initiative, under the auspices of Air Quality Asia, to focus MPs’ and stakeholders’ attention on the air pollution crisis in our country.”

“While different organisations, including @teriinand @orfonline, have partnered with me in the past, this time@GHS and Dr Soumya Swaminathan came on board for an excellent discussion, attended by eleven MPs (after last-minute dropouts) and a dozen experts. Many areas of consensus emerged and there was strong agreement on the need to move forward,” read his post.

According to an official release, the event, part of an ongoing initiative launched in 2017 by Tharoor, highlighted urgent solutions, including the nationwide shift to cleaner cooking fuels like LPG.

With air pollution now responsible for millions of premature deaths, experts emphasised the urgent need to accelerate the transition to cleaner cooking fuels like LPG-key in reducing both household and ambient air pollution, which contributes an average of 30 per cent of the problem.

A proposal for creating a Council of State Environment Ministers (SEM) to foster collaboration across states in tackling air pollution and other environmental health risks was also discussed in the meeting.

Moderated by Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Chairperson of the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation and Co-chair of Our Common Air, the event drew a distinguished assembly of changemakers. Members of Parliament, including Dr Amar Singh, Dr T. Sumathy Alias Thamizhachi Thangapandian were also present among others.

Joining the discussion were leading experts in air quality and public policy. Their contributions provided a robust scientific and technical foundation for the discussions, reinforcing the event’s focus on evidence-based solutions.

The keynote address focused on the significant health impacts of air pollution, particularly on children, adults, and maternal health. Experts proposed sector-specific actions, strengthening local air quality monitoring, and improving public access to real-time data.

They emphasized transitioning to cleaner cooking fuels like LPG to reduce household and ambient air pollution. Recognising the disproportionate impact on vulnerable groups, the address called for targeted interventions to mitigate the long-term health effects of poor air quality.

An expert presentation called for coordinated action at both the Union and State levels. It proposed creating a CSEM, modelled along with the GST Council, to share best practices and tackle challenges across sectors like transportation, agriculture, and energy.

The Council would focus on emission inventories, climate finance, and green markets, harmonising efforts across states. This initiative aims to ensure uniformity in policy implementation while promoting innovation in sustainable practices and could address environmental risks other than air pollution as well.

Other proposals discussed included the creation of a new Parliamentary Forum to oversee the implementation of air quality policies at both the Union and State levels, ensuring coordinated and sustained action.

Additionally, experts called for stronger incentives for adopting green technologies, particularly in the industrial and agricultural sectors, to reduce emissions at their source. There was also a proposal to create dedicated funding mechanisms to support state-level air quality initiatives and enhance local air pollution control capacities.

The roundtable reaffirmed the urgent need for multi-sectoral collaboration, positioning India as a global leader in developing scalable and innovative solutions to tackle air pollution.
With the right political will, expert insight, and public involvement, India has the potential to lead the world in combating air pollution.

Participants stressed that now is the time for bold action -cleaner air is within reach, but only through decisive, collective efforts can India set a global benchmark for air quality and public health.

They also committed themselves to pursuing further initiatives to spread awareness and promote decisive action to tackle the nation’s air quality challenges.

Taking to X, the MP shared a series of snaps showing how the primate settled down on his lap and enjoyed some food, ending with giving him a warm hug. This “extraordinary experience” was vividly described by Tharoor which soon became viral.

The MP shared the moment: “Had an extraordinary experience today.”. While I was sitting in the garden, reading my morning newspapers, a monkey wandered in, headed straight for me and parked himself on my lap. He hungrily ate a couple of bananas we offered him, hugged me and proceeded to rest his head on my chest and dozed off. I gingerly got up, he leapt off and loped away.” He uploaded four photographs with this warm story.

The pictures of the monkey peacefully sitting on Tharoor’s lap, peeling a banana and even napping for some time without leaving the MP’s lap.

In a sequel, Tharoor reflected on the experience with a sense of reverence for wildlife: “Reverence for wildlife is ingrained in us, so though I was a bit concerned about the risk of a monkey-bite (which would have necessitated rabies shots), I stayed calm and welcomed his presence as non-threatening. I am gratified that my faith was borne out and our encounter was entirely peaceful and gentle.”

India’s G20 Sherpa and former NITI Aayog CEO, Amitabh Kant, gained notoriety after posting a video of the stunning scenery from his Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, hotel. “Awesome view from Hotel Nacional where I am staying in Rio for G20 Leaders summit,” wrote Kant on X (previously Twitter), where he is attending the summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The sea, beach, mountains, buildings, and the background favelas are all captured.

However, the post triggered backlash from users who contrasted the clear skies in Rio with Delhi’s ongoing air pollution crisis. Many questioned why Kant seemed indifferent to the toxic smog enveloping the National Capital Region (NCR).

Users Question Kant’s Priorities

Several X users expressed frustration over the timing of Kant’s post. Retired army officer Pavan Nair asked, “Mr Kant, when did you last see such clear skies in New Delhi?
Another user acknowledged Kant’s contributions as a bureaucrat but lamented, “This tweet of yours from beautiful Rio just opened all the floodgates of despair, disappointment, and a sense of being helpless in your home city of Delhi for me today.”

A user went further, urging Kant to focus on addressing Delhi’s environmental challenges. “I rather have you be the ‘Sherpa’ of counter stubble-burning efforts across states, a Sherpa of fresh air for Northern India.”

Congress Kerala and Shashi Tharoor Weigh In

Congress Kerala’s X handle also joined the criticism, pointing out the stark difference in air quality between Rio, with an AQI of 13, and Delhi, where pollution levels have reached hazardous extremes.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor raised a larger question, asking whether Delhi should remain India’s capital given its chronic pollution issues. “Delhi is officially the most polluted city in the world… This city is essentially uninhabitable from November to January inclusive and barely livable the rest of the year. Should it even remain the nation’s capital?” Tharoor posted on X.

Tharoor highlighted that his Air Quality Round Table, launched in 2015, had seen little progress. He lamented, “Nothing seemed to change, and no one seemed to care.”

Delhi’s Air Crisis: A Recurring Nightmare

Delhi and its surrounding areas, home to over 7 crore residents, face some of the worst air pollution levels globally every winter. This year, the air quality has reached “severe-plus” levels, forcing schools to shift to online classes and authorities to implement strict pollution control measures.

A thick smog, a mix of smoke and fog, has engulfed the region. Experts attribute the crisis to emissions, construction dust, and the rampant stubble burning by farmers in Punjab and Haryana, who clear their fields for the next crop cycle.

Moving Forward

As Delhi’s air quality continues to deteriorate, public figures and experts alike are calling for urgent action. Whether Kant’s post was ill-timed or merely a reflection of his travels, it has reignited a crucial debate on the government’s responsibility to address the capital’s unrelenting environmental challenges.

In a strongly worded statement on Monday, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor raised a thought-provoking question about whether Delhi should remain India’s capital, as the city grapples with hazardous levels of air pollution. The Delhi-NCR region has been enveloped in a thick blanket of toxic smog, pushing the Air Quality Index (AQI) to alarming levels far exceeding the World Health Organization’s recommended daily maximum.

Delhi’s Toxic Smog Levels Surge

The city’s AQI has soared to over 60 times the safe limit, causing a public health emergency. According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), the AQI hit a staggering 494 at 6 am, entering the “severe-plus” category. These levels are among the worst recorded this season, exacerbated by “unfavourable” weather conditions. Authorities have responded by switching schools to online classes and implementing strict pollution control measures.

Tharoor Criticizes Government’s Inaction

Tharoor, a Member of Parliament from Kerala, took to social media to express his frustration with the government’s handling of the pollution crisis. He lamented that despite his efforts, including organizing an Air Quality Round Table for experts and stakeholders since 2015, little has changed. “This city is essentially uninhabitable from November to January,” Shashi Tharoor stated, adding that the situation remained unbearable for much of the year. He questioned whether Delhi should continue to serve as the nation’s capital under such dire conditions.

Delhi Tops Global Pollution Rankings

Delhi has consistently ranked as one of the world’s most polluted cities, particularly during winter months. Cold air traps smoke, dust, and emissions, including from illegal stubble burning by farmers in neighboring states like Punjab and Haryana. This creates a toxic mixture that severely impacts air quality and public health.

Government’s Response and Stricter Pollution Measures

In response to the worsening smog, the Centre’s air quality panel invoked stricter pollution control measures under Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The measures include urging vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing health conditions, to stay indoors. The city’s AQI levels are expected to remain dangerously high, with Delhi’s air quality showing no immediate signs of improvement.

The Growing Health Crisis

The current air quality crisis in Delhi is putting immense pressure on public health systems, with respiratory and cardiovascular issues on the rise. The air pollution is taking a toll on residents, forcing the authorities to take extreme measures to safeguard the public.

As the toxic smog continues to choke the city, the question remains: how long can Delhi endure these hazardous air quality levels? Tharoor’s suggestion of reevaluating the capital’s status amid such a public health crisis is likely to spark further debate.

Tharoor’s Call for Accountability and Reform

In a heartfelt post on X, Tharoor shared his thoughts after visiting Anna’s parents, emphasizing the urgent need for an inquiry, accountability, and reform of work culture norms. “Paid an emotional visit to the parents of EY India’s Anna Sebastian Perayil, who died of a heart attack at age 26 from overwork and intolerable stress & pressure from her managers,” Tharoor wrote. He stressed the need for new laws and regulations to tackle the toxic work environment in under-staffed, profit-driven companies.

“If a company needs 16-hour days and nights from its employees all the time, it needs to hire more people, not abuse the rights of those it recruits and exploits,” Tharoor asserted.

Pushing for an 8-Hour Workday

Last week, Tharoor advocated for an 8-hour workday, five days a week, and pledged to bring up this issue in the next Parliament session. Following a conversation with Anna’s father, he agreed to push for legislation to enforce a standardized work schedule in both public and private sectors. “Inhumanity at the workplace must be legislated out of existence with stringent punishment and fines for offenders. Human rights do not stop at the workplace,” he stated.

EY Responds to Public Outcry

Anna Sebastian Perayil, originally from Kerala, passed away in July after just four months at EY’s Pune office. Her mother, Anita Augustine, penned a letter to EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani, condemning the “glorification” of overwork, which quickly went viral.

In response, EY issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over Anna’s “tragic and untimely” death. The company mentioned that it employs approximately 100,000 people across its member firms in India and noted that Anna had been with SR Batliboi during her brief stint. EY also stated that they have been in touch with the family and assisting them but acknowledged the recent letter from the family addressing concerns over the “excessive workload.”

</excerpt>

Amid the escalating violence in Bangladesh, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor remarked that it is hard for people in India to remain indifferent as symbols of the country’s friendship with Bangladesh are being targeted. Tharoor described it as tragic to witness what was once celebrated as a democratic revolution deteriorate into chaos, with violence directed at minorities, including the Hindu minority.

“It’s extremely tragic that what was hailed as a democratic, popular revolution has degenerated into anarchy, and violence targeting the minorities and the Hindu minority. We in India, must stand with the people of Bangladesh. But it’s difficult for us to be indifferent when every symbol of India’s friendship with Bangladesh is being attacked,” Tharoor told ANI.

He emphasised that the vandalism of numerous institutions amid the ongoing violence presents a “very negative” signal for people in India.

Tharoor said, “The statue of the surrender of the Pakistani forces to Indian soldiers has been smashed to bits. The Indian Cultural Centre is destroyed, and a number of institutions are vandalised, including the ISKCON temple. All of these things are very negative signs for people in India. It is not in Bangladesh’s interest either to come across in this way.”

“They should be saying that this is about the restoration of their democracy, but in the process, you turn against the minorities and in particular one minority, inevitably, that will be noticed and resented in our country and elsewhere”, he added.

Bangladesh is facing a turbulent political climate following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation as Prime Minister on August 5 due to escalating protests. Initially driven by students calling for an end to the government job quota system, the protests have since evolved into broader anti-government demonstrations.

On Tuesday, a confrontation took place between Bangladesh Army personnel and members of the minority Hindu community who were protesting outside the Jamuna State Guest House in Dhaka. The protesters were holding posters of their missing family members, who disappeared during the recent violence in the country. The interim government chief, Muhammad Yunus, is currently staying at the guest house.

In the early hours of Tuesday, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, visited the historic Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka. During his visit, he assured the country’s minorities of their safety and security.

“Rights are equal for everyone. We are all one people with one right. Do not make any distinctions among us. Please, assist us. Exercise patience, and later judge — what we were able to do and not. If we fail, then criticise us,” Prof Yunus was quoted as saying by Bangladesh newspaper Daily Star.

“In our democratic aspirations, we should not be seen as Muslims, Hindus, or Buddhists, but as human beings. Our rights should be ensured. The root of all problems lies in the decay of institutional arrangements. That is why such issues arise. Institutional arrangements need to be fixed,” he added.

After Yunus’ visit, a significant meeting took place at the temple between representatives of the Muslim community and the Hindu minority. This meeting provided a platform for open dialogue, allowing both communities to address various issues and work towards enhancing communal harmony.

</excerpt>

The iconic statue at the 1971 Shaheed Memorial Complex in Mujibnagar, Bangladesh, has been vandalized amid ongoing protests in the nation, sparking strong reactions from various quarters, including Indian political figures. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor voiced his dismay over the incident, condemning what he termed as “anti-India vandals.”

The statue, which commemorated Pakistan’s surrender in 1971, marking the end of the Bangladesh Liberation War and the Indo-Pakistan War, was a significant symbol of the shared history between India and Bangladesh. The statue depicted the moment when Major-General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi of Pakistan surrendered, along with 93,000 troops, to Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora of India and AK Khandker, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Bangladesh Forces, on December 16, 1971. This event is remembered as one of the largest military surrenders since World War II.

Tharoor, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), shared a picture of the damaged statue, expressing his sadness at the act of vandalism. “Sad to see images like this of statues at the 1971 Shaheed Memorial Complex, Mujibnagar, destroyed by anti-India vandals. This follows disgraceful attacks on the Indian cultural centre, temples, and Hindu homes in several places, even as reports came in of Muslim civilians protecting other minority homes and places of worship,” he wrote.

He further stated that the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh highlight the “agenda” of certain agitators amid the protests. Shashi Tharoor called on the interim government, led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, to take “urgent steps” to restore law and order in the country, emphasizing that it was in the “interest of all Bangladeshis of every faith.” He added, “India stands with the people of Bangladesh at this turbulent time, but such anarchic excess can never be condoned.”

The unrest in Bangladesh initially began as protests against quotas in government jobs but quickly escalated into widespread anti-government demonstrations. These protests led to the deaths of more than 400 people and ultimately forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign on August 5, fleeing to India for safety. The violence has also led to an exodus of minorities, particularly Hindus, who have faced targeted attacks, including the vandalism of homes and lynching. Many have fled to India, especially to border states like West Bengal.

Muhammad Yunus, the interim leader, has condemned the attacks on minorities as “heinous” and urged citizens to protect Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian families from harm. Addressing the student protesters, who are leading the demonstrations, Yunus warned them not to let their movement be derailed by those seeking to undermine their cause.

As Bangladesh grapples with this turbulent period, the call for peace and protection of all citizens, regardless of faith, remains more critical than ever.
