‘Deva’ Box Office Collection Day 3: Shahid Kapoor’s Film Success

Deva, Shahid Kapoor’s new action-thriller, showed minor growth in its box office collection on its third day. Sacnilk reports that the Rosshan Andrrews film collected ₹7.15 crore on Sunday. Its total domestic collection now stands at ₹19.05 crore. Hindi occupancy for the film stood at 15.34% on February 2.

A Remake With a New Twist

Deva is an official remake of Rosshan Andrrews’ 2013 Malayalam film Mumbai Police. While the essence of the original remains intact, the Bollywood adaptation presents a revised climax, adding a fresh layer of suspense.

The film features Shahid Kapoor as ACP Dev Ambre and Pooja Hegde as Diya Sathaye in pivotal roles. Other prominent actors include Pavail Gulati, Pravesh Rana, Kubbra Sait, Girish Kulkarni, and Manish Wadhwa.

Taran Adarsh Highlights Slow Growth

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to X (formerly Twitter) to share insights on Deva’s box office performance. On Day 2, the film saw 14.36% growth which he considered not enough after the slow start.

He said, ” #Deva sees wafer-thin growth [14.36%] on Day 2, but the all-important leap – much needed after a doltish opening- simply isn’t there. Ideally, the total for the two days should’ve been the opening day’s number. The film needs to claw back lost territory on Sunday.”

Adarsh elaborated further on how the collections are split:

Day 1 (Friday): ₹5.78 cr

Day 2 (Saturday): ₹6.61 cr

Total (first two days): ₹12.39 cr

Shahid Kapoor Praises Co-actor

During the promotions of the film, Shahid Kapoor praised his co-star Pooja Hegde, saying she has worked really hard to get to where she is. “Not everyone can make it on their own, and I appreciate that about her. Also, the way she dances—it’s very charming, and I really enjoy watching her perform,” he said.

In the latest interview with The Indian Express, Shahid Kapoor has commented on Jab We Met’s lead characters, Aditya and Geet: “Today, if they were together, they will probably be sitting at a divorce lawyer’s office.” He agreed with Imtiaz Ali, who had considered that it would not have “a happy ending” in the case of the couple. Shahid joked that “she is her own favourite, who can ever put up with her?” regarding Geet.

Despite a tremendous re-release last year and a week-long phenomenon last year, Shahid explained to the fans that he could not disappoint them but was sticking to Imtiaz’s vision. He added, “If our filmmaker thinks these two will divorce each other, then who am I to come in between? I am just an actor.”

Interestingly, Jab We Met was released in a time when Shahid and Kareena Kapoor had recently split up after a long relationship. They later reunited professionally on screen for the 2016 film Udta Punjab although they didn’t share any scenes together.

As the fifth phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections 2024 commenced on Monday morning across 49 parliamentary constituencies, Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor exercised his franchise at a polling booth in Mumbai.

The ‘Kabir Singh’ actor took to his Instagram handle to share a picture proudly displaying the indelible ink mark on his finger, urging his fans to fulfill their democratic duty. Shahid wrote, “Cast your vote, every vote matters.”

Earlier in the day, several other Bollywood celebrities, including Akshay Kumar, Janhvi Kapoor, RajKummar Rao, Zoya Akhtar, and Farhan Akhtar, were also seen at their respective polling booths, emphasizing the importance of participating in the democratic process.

The fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections is a significant part of the seven-phase electoral process, with elaborate arrangements in place to ensure a smooth and secure voting experience for all citizens.

In Maharashtra, elections are underway for 6 Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai, including Mumbai North, Mumbai North West, Mumbai North East, Mumbai North Central, Mumbai South, and Mumbai South Central. Other constituencies in Maharashtra participating in this phase are Dhule, Dindori, Nashik, Kalyan, Palghar, Bhiwandi, and Thane. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are being conducted in seven phases from April 19 to June 1, with the counting and results scheduled for June 4. Voting commenced at 7 am and will continue until 6 pm, with those in line by the closing time still allowed to vote.

According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), over 8.95 crore voters, including 4.69 crore males, 4.26 crore females, and 5409 third-gender electors, will decide the fate of 695 candidates in the fifth phase of voting.

Key contests are taking place in various constituencies, with leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, BJP leaders Rajnath Singh, Smriti Irani, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Piyush Goyal, Ujjwal Nikam, Karan Bhushan Singh, LJP (Ramvilas) chief Chirag Paswan, JKNC chief Omar Abdullah, and RJD leader Rohini Acharya vying for electoral success.

Eight states/UTs participating in phase 5 are Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Out of the 49 Lok Sabha seats, 14 are from Uttar Pradesh, 13 from Maharashtra, 7 from West Bengal, 5 from Bihar, 3 from Jharkhand, 5 from Odisha, and one each from Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

To ensure a peaceful voting environment, a total of 2,000 flying squads, 2105 static surveillance teams, 881 video surveillance teams, and 502 video viewing teams are maintaining round-the-clock surveillance across the 94,732 polling stations.

Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Teri Baton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’, which released on February 9, 2024, has performed well at the box office. The film has collected approximately Rs. 72 crore so far.. However, despite this, it is not a flawless attempt at storytelling.

‘Teri Baton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’ centres on a human who falls in love with a robot and wishes to marry her while keeping her actual identity a secret from his family. Things take a shocking turn when her motherboard crashes and she becomes a threat to everyone.

Fans usually expect some amount of originality from a film. ‘Teri Baton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’ doesn’t deliver on this front. Yes, it is a fresh take on the Bollywood rom-com genre but the overall approach transforms it into a routine “boy obsessed with a toy” story, which one is all too familiar with.

Mixing science fiction with romance is not exactly a brand-new theme for the audience. ‘Enthiran’ and ‘Bahu Humari Rajnikanth’ helped the audience familiarize itself with the same. Simply put, they expected something different from previous attempts but it was not delivered.

The film had its quirks and witty comments. The jokes are funny but not funny enough. This leaves the audience occasionally giggling but often checking their watches. The storyline and dialogues are average, making the movie predictable. For instance, in a light-hearted sequence, Shahid’s character runs away from his wedding. This trope is very common in Bollywood movies.

Coming to the individual performances, Shahid Kapoor proves that he is a phenomenal actor and dancer once again. He plays the character as naturally as possible. Kriti Sanon does a fine job playing a robot, ‘Sifra’ programmed to fall in love with a human being. However, she has been compared to Ridhima Pandit in ‘Bahu Humari Rajnikanth.’

The film presents some of the grooviest tracks of the year. The chemistry between the two protagonists is a mixed bag. Some viewers might enjoy this fresh chemistry between Shahid and Kriti while others might think it is not very good. Shahid Kapoor had impeccable reel chemistry with Kareena Kapoor Khan in films like ‘Jab We Met’ and ‘Chup Chup Ke’, which might have impacted the judgment.

Films are said to have the power to affect society’s outlook. There has allegedly been an increase in toxicity in films in recent times because of releases such as ‘Kabir Singh’ and Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Animal’. ‘Teri Baton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’ too features a debatable scene where Shahid hits Kriti. However, it goes with the storyline. That said, it may make some viewers think that violence is the ultimate power move.

Taking to Instagram, production house Maddock Films shared a poster of the film and wrote, “Mark your calendars – Valentine Week! ? Jio Studios and Dinesh Vijan present an untitled film starring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon, set to release on February 9, 2024.”
