Police Clarifies Bike Used By Kolkata Rape-Murder Accused Registered Under Police Commissioner’s Name

Regarding the bike used by Sanjoy Roy, the main accused in the rape and murder case at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, it was registered under the name of the Kolkata Commissioner of Police. On Tuesday, the Kolkata Police issued a clarification, explaining that “all government vehicles belonging to Kolkata Police are officially registered under the Commissioner of Police.”

Taking to social media platform X, the Kolkata Police said, “The bike used by Sanjoy Roy–principal accused in the RG Kar Hospital alleged sexual assault and murder case, which was seized by Kolkata Police before being handed over to the CBI–was registered in the name of the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata. Some individuals on social media are attempting to create confusion around this. To clarify, all government vehicles belonging to Kolkata Police are officially registered under the Commissioner of Police before being assigned to various units.”

Sanjay Roy, the principal accused in the case, was a civic volunteer at the medical college and hospital, which is why he was assigned the vehicle. Earlier, a team of experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi arrived in Kolkata on August 24 to conduct a polygraph test on Sanjay Roy, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, and others connected to the case, according to ANI sources. The test on the main accused was conducted in jail, while others were summoned to the CBI office in Kolkata, sources reported.

Earlier that day, Kolkata police stated that, following a court order, all documents concerning the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar were handed over to the CBI by the SIT. We dwell in a society that advises girls or women to be ever vigilant and not to get raped instead of teaching boys or men to revere women. Rape is the most heinous of all crimes. What happened in Kolkata put even a Taalibani- ideologue to shame. It hung the head of every Indian in disgrace. The society is replete with Duryodhanas, Ravanas and Dushaasanas. But none is ready to be a Krishna or Hanuman to salvage Draupadi’s or Sita’s dignity.

The martyr (Abhaya) was not only brutally raped but also left in a mutilated state. Some famous names in the country made some insensitive statements. It is not just unique to India where goddesses outnumber gods and teenaged-girls are worshipped on Navami twice a year. It is a pan-world phenomenon. No country can be absolved of having committed crimes against women. If we just demonise India of being misogynistic, we will be guilty of not putting other predators in the dock to say the least. If we talk just about India, we are being unfair with women all over the world.

According to the World Population Review data of “Rape Statistics by Country 2020, it is estimated that approximately 35% of women worldwide have faced sexual harassment in their life. It is an understatement as most women experiencing sexual violence hardly report or expose such incidents.

However, according to some national research or surveys, up to 70 percent of women have faced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime, according to the data of the United Nations.
Let’s talk about Nirbhayas and Abhayas of other countries.
Oksana Makar, an 18-year old girl, was gang raped by three men in Mykolaiv, Ukraine in March, 2012.

Her rapists attempted to strangle her after the rape, and later dragged her to an abandoned construction site, where she was set ablaze alive.

A gang named the Black and Whites grabbed Elizabeth Pena and Jennifer Ertman (from Houston , Texas) on the railroad bridge, and raped them for the next one hour. The six rapists in the gang were teenagers, the youngest Vinnie Medellin, being just 14.
The autopsy report disclosed that Pena’s two front teeth had been knocked out, while two of Ertman’s ribs were broken after her death. The report also disclosed that their necks were trampled upon after strangling them to death to ensure their death.

Junko Furuta was abducted by four young adults on November 12, 1988. They then confined their captive in a house owned by one of the culprits, in Adachi, Tokyo.
Having raped her, the four men tortured Furuta for the next 44 days, until she died. The under-trial assailants confessed to have raped her over 400 times, made her drink her own urine, fed her with cockroaches, beaten her, penetrated her with objects including an iron rod and light-bulb, and singed her with cigarette butts. The rapists had also inserted fireworks into her genitals and burst them and severed her nipples out.

Consequences of violence against women for the state and the economy
Researches reveal that the extent of involvement of women has a direct impact on the stability of a state and on its economic prosperity. Because of the discrimination and violence against them the involvement of women in many political and economic sectors is severely restricted. Such women who have been subjected to violence absent themselves regularly from the workplace, diminishing the efficiency of companies and harming the national economy.

The UN Resolution 1325 accentuates that gender –based violence is both a serious hindrance to successful peace negotiations and also a menace to peace and stability in the long term. Peace agreements made without the involvement of women or consideration of their requirements will be a failure in the long term.

Children witnessing or experiencing domestic violence are at a heightened risk of depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, and poor school performance, among other problems harming their all-round growth and personal development. Consequently, they are psychologically vulnerable to experiencing or perpetrating violence in future. In Nicaragua, 63 percent of children of traumatised mothers had to repeat a school year and they quit school on an average 4 years prior to other children.

History will keep repeating itself till the youth stops viewing women as a commodity for sexual-gratification. The solution lies with parents and teachers. They have to embed reverence for women in the boys’ pliant mind at the very nascent stage of their lives. The release of filthy lyrics of hit songs disparaging women must be nipped in the bud.

Principal and Cop Suspended After Sexual Assault Allegations At Thane Nursery

The Principal of Adarsh Vidya Prasarak Sanstha (AVPS) nursery in Badlapur, Thane, where two girls were allegedly sexually assaulted, has been suspended, according to Maharashtra Minister Girish Mahajan. Additionally, two other individuals from the school have been suspended. The minister also mentioned that those responsible for the delay in addressing the case, including the inspector, have been suspended.

The situation escalated as protesters, including parents and locals, vandalized the school and held a large demonstration at Badlapur station, disrupting local train services. “I believe that a solution will soon be found as all problems have a solution. The agitation has been going on for six hours and trains are blocked. An SIT has been formed, principal and two other people at the school have been suspended. The case has been fast-tracked. All those responsible for the delay and the inspector have been suspended,” Mahajan stated at the station.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde confirmed that an SIT has been established to investigate the case. He noted, “I spoke to the police commissioner and was told that the accused has been arrested. Whoever is found guilty will not be spared. Instructions have been given to apply all the sections that can be applied on the accused.”

Shinde further assured that the case would be concluded within two months to prevent such incidents from recurring. He also mentioned that the officer who delayed the case registration has been dismissed, and some of his colleagues, including the senior inspector, have been suspended.

Action has been taken against the school for hiring individuals without proper verification. “Their verification should be done. The government is also running a campaign for safe sisters along with Ladli Behna. All our sisters should not feel unsafe. Strict action will be taken,” Shinde added.

He emphasized that the government stands with the affected family. “We consider them our family. The family is scared but the government is with them,” Shinde concluded.

They marched from Jawaharlal Nehru Auditorium to gate 3 crossing gate 1, against the heinous crime demanding:

1) Transparent Investigation: We insist on a proper and transparent investigation into the case, as recent incidents have cast doubt on the integrity of ongoing investigations and immediate transfer to CBI.

2) Resignation of Responsible Authorities: We demand the resignation of all authorities responsible for the failure to protect the dignity and life of the on-duty female doctor involved in this tragic incident including the Principal of RG Kar Medical College.

3) Adequate compensation to the bereaved family of our friend and colleague. 4) Implementation of the Central Protection Act (CPA): We demand the immediate implementation of the CPA or a similar law to ensure the protection of doctors across the country.

We urge the concerned authorities and Government to take swift measures and ensure the necessary action is taken else we would be forced to escalate our protest further.

What was the case:

A semi-nude body of a second-year woman doctor was found in the chest medicine department by officials inside the seminar hall of the hospital on Friday. The post-graduate trainee (PGT) was on duty on Thursday night, while her body bore multiple injury marks like There was bleeding from both her eyes and mouth, injuries over the face and nail. The victim was also bleeding from her private parts. She also has injuries in her belly, left leg… neck, right hand, ring finger, and… lips.

The preliminary autopsy report says, she was sexually abuse before her murder was indicated by officials. The father of the victim alleges that the woman doctor was raped and murdered inside the state-run hospital.

After an investigation, Kolkata Police arrested a suspect, who was later identified as Sanjay Roy.

An outsider, Roy worked as a civic volunteer on the police welfare board. He reportedly had easy access to multiple departments of the hospital.

As per reports, he was taken into custody by police after his activities were found to be suspicious.

Boxing Trainer Booked For Sexually Assaulting 12-Year Old Girl For 4 Months

Byculla police detained a 22-year-old kickboxing trainer on Monday for allegedly sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl on several occasions over the last four months.

According to investigators, the guy taught kickboxing to minors. He taught the girl self-defense using kickboxing techniques in the refuge area of the residential tower where she lives with her family.

According to authorities, the accused sexually molested the girl on several occasions between February and June of this year. “He first approached the minor for sexual favors. “When she refused, he sexually assaulted her,” a police officer stated.

The youngster recently told her mother about her ordeal, which she had not previously disclosed to anybody. The mother went to the police on Monday.

The child informed authorities that the accused sexually attacked her at a boxing studio where he taught his students.

“On the girl’s compaint, we arrested the accused on Monday and produced him before a court that sent him to police custody up till July 5,” said a police officer from the Byculla police station.

Suraj Revanna, a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) from JD(S) and the elder brother of Prajwal Revanna, has been arrested following serious allegations of sexual assault leveled against him by a 27-year-old party worker. The incident allegedly took place at Suraj Revanna’s farmhouse in Ghannikada, Holenarasipura Taluk, on June 16.

According to reports, Suraj Revanna was brought to the CEN police station in Hassan for interrogation, which extended over several hours before his arrest. He has been booked under IPC sections 377 (unnatural sex) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

In response to these charges, Suraj Revanna has vehemently denied the allegations, asserting his innocence. His aide, Shivakumar, filed a counter-complaint against the party worker and his relative, alleging an attempt to extort ₹5 crore from the MLC. Brittany also mentioned that over the week, she had been approached by numerous other women from the same town who shared similar experiences. “This could have happened to anyone and tragically, it does happen to many of us,” the Australian MP said.

“I have had multiple women contact me who have experienced the same thing in our town. It’s not ok. We should be able to enjoy socialising in our town without the risk of being drugged or assaulted,” Brittany Lauga added.

According to The Guardian, a circulating online video purportedly depicts the alleged assault of Brittany, filmed from across the street. Lauga became aware of its existence shortly after reporting the assault to the police.

The Queensland Police Service has verified that it is probing a sexual assault complaint linked to an incident in Yeppoon. Queensland Premier Steven Miles affirmed that the government is offering support to Brittany Lauga in every possible manner, as reported by ABC.

“No one should have to go through what Brittany is going through,” Steven Miles was quoted as saying.

“My sole focus is on Brittany and her wellbeing. I have told Brittany Lauga that we are here to support her, whatever she needs,” he added.

Queensland housing minister Meaghan Scanlon said the statement made for “difficult reading”. “Those are shocking allegations … I understand that Brittany is going to take a short time to look after herself and we absolutely support her to do that,” she said.

Delhi court awards 3-year sentence to convict in minor sexual assault case after nine years

Delhi court has sentenced a man to three years in jail for sexually assaulting a minor girl in 2015, after a nine-year trial. The convict, who was 19 years old at the time of the incident, has been granted bail to appeal the judgment in the high court. Special judge (POCSO) Babita Punia, while delivering the verdict on April 8, noted that the convict, a first-time offender, had exhibited good conduct in jail.

The court emphasized the need to balance punishment with other considerations, stating, “Society demands that offenders be punished for their crimes. However, a court must strike a balance and must not over-emphasise one factor.” Additionally, the court awarded Rs 3 lakh compensation to the victim, who was 16 years old at the time of the assault.

Considering the convict’s poor financial condition, the court directed the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA) to take appropriate action. The judge acknowledged the victim’s suffering and noted that while monetary compensation cannot fully address her pain, it can help her acquire skills or education for a degree of independence.

The convict’s counsel sought leniency, highlighting his age (around 28 years), family circumstances (parents deceased, unmarried brother in native village), and employment as a salesman earning Rs 12,000 per month. In contrast, the additional public prosecutor argued against leniency, advocating for the maximum punishment for the convicted offence.

Telangana police inspector arrested under POCSO for sexual assault of minor girl

On Friday, a police inspector under the authority of the Kakatiya University police station in the Hanumakonda district of Telangana was taken into custody on charges of molesting a sixteen-year-old girl.

He was the subject of a case filed under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act and the Rape Act. The accused was employed by Bhupalpally Cybercrime as an inspector, according to the police.

The authorities claim that on March 21, the accused misbehaved with the victim girl.
“A case has been registered under the rape section of the POCSO Act. The accused was sent to remand,” the police said.

Investigations are still being conducted further.
