Judged on heart rate and crowd votes, the quirky contest went viral, drawing 126 finalists from over 4,500 applicants.
</excerpt>

Ever considered that doing absolutely nothing might be a prize-winning activity? In South Korea, the innovative Space-Out Competition pays participants exactly for that — sitting quietly and spacing out. The event’s 11th iteration was held on May 11 at Jamsu Bridge Banpo Hangang Park in Seoul and attracted a huge audience for the second year running.

As per The Korea Times, this year had 4,547 teams applying, but just 126 people from 80 teams got the chance to compete. Among those competing were soldiers and train operators alongside swimmers and even a reporter from the paper.

The goal of the competition is easy: stay perfectly still and unattentive for 90 minutes. Phone usage is prohibited, one cannot talk, and sleeping disqualifies one. The winner is decided by cardiovascular stability and live audience vote.

Among the first to arrive were 62-year-old paralegal Choi I-ro, who informed the reporter, “I came out here because I wanted to feel just how important it is to pause and rest.” He showed up two hours prior to the event. The other highlight was eight-year-old Kim Ju-ha, who stated, “I realised I’m really good at spacing out while just playing in the playground. That’s why I joined the competition.”

The competition began at 4 PM with 15 minutes of introduction followed by a quick stretching exercise. The contestants then went into 90 minutes of complete stillness. Workers in doctor’s uniforms oversaw heart rates, and others in antique magistrate attire patrolled the park to keep contestants focused. One warning was issued this year for losing concentration; a second warning would have disqualified them.

One video from the event, posted on Instagram, quickly became viral. It featured contestants sitting patiently in colorful attire—some wearing clown, ninja, and even a police costume. The caption was, “who else thinks of winning 1st place? ” The video has so far recorded more than four million views with many social media users expressing their interest and humor. One user commented, “Always wanted to do this HAHA,” while another joked, “I’m gonna win an Oscar.” Someone else wrote, “I’d love to do this. I’d call it a one day vacation.”

After the quiet competition and scoring, the winners were announced. A Seoul punk band called Pogo Attack took home the prize. On stage with their children, they said, “We’re Pogo Attack, and we’re here to take over the world. Today, we’re thrilled to have conquered the art of spacing out.”

The festival was founded in 2014 by Korean visual artist Woopsyang. According to Vice, in which she was interviewed, she started it because she felt tired and stressed out about not being productive when the inspiration hit her. “We would all feel better about doing nothing if we did nothing together as a group,” she stated.

This competition defies the stereotype that to do nothing is a waste of time, rewarding those who have perfected the art of just spacing out.

</excerpt>

North Korean soldiers who are combatants for Russia in Ukraine have suffered serious casualties, South Korea says. Seoul said some 600 North Korean soldiers were killed and nearly 4,700 others killed or wounded. This came after the news broke when Pyongyang first formally acknowledged having sent troops to aid Moscow.

Russia is said to have offered high-tech military and technical assistance in return. While the two heavily sanctioned countries deepen their partnership, the war now threatens to redefine world security dynamics.

? SHOCKING: South Korean intel reports 600 North Korean soldiers killed in Kursk, Russia, fighting for Putin. Out of 15,000 deployed, 4,700 casualties! North Korean troops now using drones, showing improved combat skills. #RussianAggression #NorthKorea #Kursk @Reuters pic.twitter.com/EAcYyzfCkf

Pyongyang Confirms Combat Mission

KCNA, the official North Korean media, confirmed on Monday that its troops assisted Russia in regaining territory in Ukraine’s Kursk region. Pyongyang was not shy of admitting its contribution, saying its troops were part of the Russian advance in regaining Ukrainian-controlled territory.

Before this, Moscow and Pyongyang had maintained a silence that lasted for months. Nevertheless, Seoul and Washington had already implicated North Korea of sending weapons and troops to back the Russian incursion. Russia had only just admitted to the collaboration.

Seoul Reveals Death Toll and Troop Repatriation

South Korean legislator Lee Seong-kweun, citing Seoul’s National Intelligence Service (NIS), disclosed the casualty figures. He said North Korean military fatalities were 600 killed, and overall casualties were around 4,700.

North Korea brought home alone this year some 2,000 wounded soldiers. The regime quarantined these injured troops in various locations, including Pyongyang. Russian authorities cremated corpses of dead North Korean troops in Kursk and sent their remains back to the North, Lee said. Such secretive moves indicate a closely monitored operation aimed at concealing the extent of participation from the North Korean population.

Deployment Happened in Two Waves

Seoul has assured that North Korea deployed 18,000 troops to Russia in two waves. The soldiers, who were brought from the top Storm Corps unit, were instructed to take their own lives so that they don’t fall into the hands of Ukrainian forces. Since March, fighting near Kursk has reduced.

But Lee also observed that morale seems to be deteriorating. Instances of binge drinking and thievery among North Korean soldiers have been reported, further laying bare cracks within the ranks.

North Korean Combat Proficiency Increases

The NIS also documented a sharp increase in the fighting power of North Korean troops. In the last six months, the troops have become more capable of operating sophisticated weapons, particularly drones. Early battlefield inexperience has dissipated. Lee stated that their level of proficiency is now a greater military threat.

At the same time, Russia supposedly delivered high-tech arms and training to North Korea as part of the agreement. This reciprocal aid is assisting the two nations to enhance military preparedness.

Putin and Kim Establish New Axis of Militarism

The Moscow-Pyongyang military ties have never been tighter. The two countries inked a broad defense agreement last year. The deal features a mutual defense clause and came on the heels of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s unusual trip to North Korea.

In parallel, North Korea launched multiple ballistic missiles last year, violating UN sanctions. Experts suggest that Pyongyang could be testing these weapons for eventual delivery to Russia. The Ukraine war may now double as a live-fire testing zone for North Korean exports.

Growing Threat to Global Stability

As North Korea hones its battlefield capabilities and Russia increases its dependence on foreign fighters, the alliance fuels a deadly feedback loop. North Korea provides troops and battle-hardened missiles. Russia provides cutting-edge military technology and training. The trade fortifies both regimes while eroding international sanctions.

Seoul cautioned that Pyongyang might deploy even more troops in the future. With this alliance growing, Ukraine’s conflict zone threatens to become a proving ground for autocratic regimes that are committed to destabilizing the international order.

The death toll has risen to 16 as flames continue to spread.
</excerpt>

A fire-fighting helicopter crashed on Wednesday while fighting a huge wildfire in Uiseong County in South Korea, killing the pilot, officials confirmed. The helicopter crashed on a mountain at 12:54 p.m., about 180 kilometers southeast of Seoul, the Korea Forest Service said. Officials have opened an investigation into the accident, Yonhap news agency reported.

Death Toll Reaches 16 as Fires Advance

The raging wildfires in the southeastern part of the country have killed 16 people, and at least 10 more were reported injured. Firefighters are having a tough time putting out the fast-spreading fires, which began last Friday in Sancheong County, South Gyeongsang Province. The fires have been fueled by strong, dry winds, which are driving them toward Uiseong and surrounding areas, including Andong, Cheongsong, Yeongyang, and Yeongdeok.

?? South Korea: A large wildfire raging for four days in Uiseong, Gyeongbuk, has swept through several areas, leaving at least 24 dead. pic.twitter.com/3YQ9nUZMYE

— Polymarket Intel (@PolymarketIntel) March 26, 2025

The positions of the victims were reported by the authorities: two in Andong, three in Cheongsong, five in Yeongyang, and six in Yeongdeok. Two of the victims who were injured received serious burns. Four victims were discovered burned to death on a road in Yeongyang at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Historic Temple Ruined as Fire-Fighting Efforts Continue

The fiery blaze has also destroyed historical landmarks, such as Goun Temple in Uiseong, which was constructed in 681 during the Silla Dynasty. Luckily, national treasures stored inside the temple were moved earlier before the fire was able to reach it.

Thousands of firefighters and dozens of helicopters and fire vehicles have been dispatched to battle the blazes. The South Korea military has dispatched approximately 5,000 troops and 146 helicopters to support firefighting efforts since last Friday.

Prison Inmates Relocated Amid Fire Threat

As a precautionary action, the justice ministry relocated about 500 inmates from a North Gyeongsang Province prison to another one overnight. The authorities at first thought of evacuating a maximum of 3,500 inmates from multiple prisons but reduced the number after many fires had been put out.

The tragedy has witnessed an emergency reaction from officials since attempts are ongoing to bring the blazes under control and safeguard communities.

Investigators are probing potential causes, including a bird strike and possible safety concerns with airport construction.
</excerpt>

Flags flew at half-mast in South Korea as the nation began a seven-day period of mourning following the tragic crash of Jeju Air Flight 2216. The Boeing 737-800, carrying 181 passengers and crew from Thailand to South Korea, crashed on December 29, killing 179 people. The accident has prompted an ongoing investigation as authorities seek to understand why the plane crashed, despite initial reports suggesting a bird strike may have been involved.

A Nation in Mourning: South Korea Pays Tribute to the Victims

The country is reeling from the loss of 179 lives, including passengers aged between three and 78. Two flight attendants were the only survivors. South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, who assumed office on Friday, flew to the crash site in Muan to offer his condolences and support to the bereaved families. The government has pledged a thorough investigation to identify the cause of the crash and to ensure that future aviation incidents are prevented.

Investigation Underway: Authorities Scrutinise Possible Causes

The crash, which occurred after the plane made a mayday call and belly-landed before colliding with a barrier and bursting into flames, has raised several questions. Investigators are closely examining whether a bird strike was the sole cause, especially after reports surfaced of a similar incident involving another Jeju Air flight using the same aircraft model. While a bird strike warning was issued minutes before the crash, some experts are now suggesting that a structural issue at the airport may have contributed to the disaster.

Professor Kim Kwang-il, an expert in aeronautical science, voiced concerns about a solid structure at the end of the runway, which may have obstructed the plane’s emergency landing. According to Kim, this structure, which does not comply with international aviation safety standards, could have been a significant factor in the crash. He argues that if the area had been left clear with a soft fence, the plane could have skidded to a halt naturally, without the devastating crash.

Identification and Support Efforts: Families Await Closure

As of Monday, 141 victims had been identified through DNA analysis or fingerprint collection. Families of the victims gathered at the airport, where they faced the agonising wait for information about their loved ones. Many are still struggling with the loss and uncertainty, as only two survivors were pulled from the wreckage.

The government has pledged full support to the victims’ families, ensuring they receive the necessary assistance in this difficult time. South Korea’s transport ministry has also announced a special inspection of all Boeing 737-800 aircraft operating in the country to determine if any mechanical or structural issues contributed to the crash.

Jeju Air Responds to the Tragedy

Jeju Air, the low-cost carrier responsible for Flight 2216, has expressed deep regret over the disaster, with top officials offering their sincerest apologies. The airline acknowledged the gravity of the situation, confirming that a thorough investigation is underway. In addition, Jeju Air representatives are reviewing other incidents involving the same model aircraft to determine if any technical issues could have contributed to the crash.

What’s Next for South Korea’s Aviation Safety?

As South Korea’s aviation experts, alongside US investigators, work to determine the cause of this devastating crash, questions surrounding safety protocols and infrastructure continue to mount. The government has pledged to strengthen its aviation safety standards and conduct an urgent inspection of the country’s aircraft operations. Meanwhile, the growing criticism over the airport’s safety infrastructure could prompt changes to improve safety measures nationwide.

This tragic event marks a somber moment in South Korea’s aviation history and will undoubtedly lead to a reevaluation of the safety standards and practices that govern air travel in the country.

As the investigation continues, South Korea remains focused on supporting the victims’ families, while the nation grapples with the profound loss caused by the worst aviation disaster in its history. The ongoing probe into the causes of the crash and the examination of infrastructure and aviation safety will be crucial in preventing such tragedies in the future.

</excerpt>

South Korea continued to face severe winter weather for a second day on Thursday, as heavy snowfall disrupted travel and caused multiple fatalities. The storm, which brought one of the heaviest snowfalls in Seoul since records began in 1907, left at least four people dead and forced widespread cancellations of flights and ferry services.

According to the Yonhap news agency, citing Seoul’s meteorological data, this winter’s snowfall ranks as the third-heaviest in the city’s history. By 8 a.m. Thursday, parts of the capital were blanketed by more than 40 cm (16 inches) of snow. This led to over 140 flight cancellations, although heavy snow warnings in Seoul’s metropolitan area were lifted by 10 a.m.

The snowstorm proved deadly, with one fatality and two injuries reported at a golf range where a snow-laden net collapsed on Wednesday night. Another person was killed when a protective tent in a car park gave way under the weight of snow. Additionally, two people died in traffic accidents east of Seoul, with police reporting that 11 others were injured in a 53-vehicle pile-up on a highway in Wonju, Gangwon province.

Seoul’s Incheon Airport bore the brunt of the travel chaos, as passengers faced delays averaging two hours. According to flight tracking service Flightradar24, 14% of flights were delayed, and 15% were cancelled on Thursday. Meanwhile, ferry operations were halted on 76 routes, affecting 99 vessels, and local media reported train delays.

In response to the extreme weather, schools in Gyeonggi province, which borders Seoul, were granted permission to close for the day.

The unusually early and intense snowfall is being attributed to the interaction between warmer-than-usual seawater temperatures off the Korean peninsula and cold air currents. Neighboring North Korea also experienced heavy snow, with some regions receiving over 10 cm (4 inches) of accumulation between Tuesday and Wednesday, according to state broadcaster Korean Central Television.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as conditions gradually improve.

By 7 a.m. Wednesday, 16.5 cm (6.5 inches) of snow had fallen, surpassing the previous record of 12.4 cm on November 28, 1972. This marks the first snowfall of the winter season.

Travel Chaos and Disruptions

The snowstorm caused significant disruptions, grounding at least 220 flights nationwide and halting operations for around 90 ferries. Authorities also closed hundreds of hiking trails as emergency workers across the country tackled safety hazards, including fallen trees and damaged signs.

Icy roads created a challenging morning commute in Seoul, where one subway line experienced a nine-minute delay during rush hour, according to Yonhap News Agency. Tragically, a five-vehicle collision in the eastern town of Hongcheon left one person dead and four injured.

Government Response

President Yoon Suk Yeol instructed the safety and transport ministries to deploy all necessary personnel and equipment to prevent snow-related accidents. He emphasized the importance of quickly sharing weather and traffic updates with the public to minimize disruptions and ensure safety.

The KMA reported that snow blanketed much of the country, with regions in the central, eastern, and southwestern areas receiving between 10 to 23 cm. The agency forecasts continued snowfall in most areas until Thursday noon.

This ruling was in response to a lawsuit filed by 200 plaintiffs, including young climate activists, who accused the government of not doing enough to combat climate change.

More than 30,000 protesters filled the streets of Seoul on September 7, demanding stronger government action on climate change as South Korea experienced a scorching summer heat. Demonstrators from all walks of life gathered in the bustling Gangnam district, a financial and shopping hub, to ensure their voices reached major corporations held responsible for significant carbon emissions.

Calls for Climate Justice

Waving banners with messages like “Climate justice” and “Protect our lives!”, the protesters denounced President Yoon Suk Yeol’s administration, labeling it a “climate villain” for its perceived inaction. The protest, one of the largest this year, highlighted the urgency of addressing global warming. Many pointed to the record-breaking heat in Seoul, where temperatures remained above 25°C (77°F) for 20 consecutive nights—an event classified as “tropical nights.”

“This is a survival issue for younger generations,” said Kim Ki-chang, a 46-year-old novelist attending his third protest. He called on the older generation to do more to secure a sustainable future for the next.

Environmental activist and protest leader Yu Si-yun echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the critical need for immediate action. “Without air conditioning, this summer would have been unlivable,” she said. “This is a global crisis, and we are running out of time. We need systemic change now.”

Legal Action and the Government’s Carbon Pledge

The protest came shortly after a South Korean court criticized the country’s climate laws for failing to protect human rights and future generations. This ruling was in response to a lawsuit filed by 200 plaintiffs, including young climate activists, who accused the government of not doing enough to combat climate change.

Although South Korea has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, critics argue the government has been slow to adopt renewable energy. The country remains the second-largest coal polluter among G20 nations. Despite this, the government recently lowered its 2030 targets for reducing industrial greenhouse gas emissions, while maintaining a national goal of a 40% reduction from 2018 levels.

Impact on Agriculture

Climate change is already affecting South Korea’s agriculture, with rising temperatures reducing the quality and quantity of napa cabbage, a key ingredient in the country’s staple food, kimchi. Many farmers are raising concerns as the impact of global warming begins to affect both livelihoods and food security.

The protest organizers, the 907 Climate Justice March Group Committee, hope their efforts will lead to urgent reforms, pushing South Korea to adopt stronger measures against climate change before it’s too late.

The unexpected appearance of the sinkhole caused significant disruption in the area, resulting in severe traffic congestion. Dramatic images from the scene depict the vehicle nearly fully engulfed by the massive hole. Authorities have cordoned off the affected area and are investigating the cause of the sinkhole. According to the Seoul Seodaemun district fire station, no other injuries were reported.

This incident follows a similar event in Kuala Lumpur, where a 48-year-old Indian tourist, Vijayalakshmi from Chittoor district’s Animiganipalle village, fell into a sinkhole while walking along a footpath. The ground gave way, swallowing her into an underground sewer. Her husband and son managed to escape the collapse. Rescue operations are ongoing, with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu urging effective search efforts through the Andhra Pradesh Non-Resident Telugu (APNRT) Society.

</excerpt>

Days after Russia and North Korea inked a defense pact, South Korea has said that it would consider supplying arms to Ukraine. This agreement, inked during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 2-day visit to North Korea, promises mutual military support in case of an invasion, as reported by North Korean media. It is pertinent to note that Russia has been engaged in a full-blown war with Ukraine since February 24, 2022.

Russia-Pyongyang Alliance

The latest deal denotes a deepening alliance covering security, trade, and cultural relations. It is viewed as a response to Russia’s isolation over its actions in Ukraine and its strained relations with Western countries. The pact has raised tensions in East Asia and sparked concerns about regional stability and South Korea’s diplomatic stance.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has criticized the pact, stating it to be a threat to stability in the region and a violation of UN rules. Seoul, capital city of South Korea, has a policy of not giving weapons to countries in conflict like Ukraine, but might change this due to Russia’s actions and changing geopolitics.

The summit and pact worry South Korean leaders and experts about how security might change in the region. North Korea supporting Russia could lead to economic and technology deals which is a matter of concern, especially since North Korea has nuclear weapons.

The agreement has sparked discussions among experts, some see it as more symbolic than actually strengthening Cold War-era alliances, while others think it could increase military and strategic ties between Pyongyang and Moscow.

For South Korea, the agreement poses bigger challenges in its relations with Russia, which are already tense due to Ukraine-related sanctions. Seoul must navigate these tensions carefully, with options including breaking ties or expelling diplomats to show concerns about Russia’s alliance with North Korea.

Kim Jong Un’s shift in foreign policy towards Russia amid heightened US-South Korea military drills shows the tense atmosphere on the peninsula. This includes unusual actions by North Korea, like dropping trash-filled balloons and using loudspeakers for psychological warfare against South Korea, similar to Cold War tactics.

South Korea’s reaction to the Russia-North Korea defense pact marks a crucial moment in regional diplomacy and security. As tensions rise and alliances change, Seoul’s strategic adjustments, potentially including supplying arms to Ukraine, highlight its role in a complex East Asian geopolitical scene shaped by historical rivalries and current global pressures.

In response to a stampede that occurred during Seoul’s Halloween festivities, South Korea is cancelling events ranging from K-pop concerts to government briefings. The death toll has risen to over 150.

A day of national mourning has been declared by President Yoon Suk Yeol that would last until November 5. In addition to cancelling Halloween parties and the opening ceremony for one of Korea’s biggest sales festivals, the Finance Ministry also postponed a press conference with international reporters. A significant K-pop event in Busan that was scheduled to attract roughly 40,000 people was also cancelled, according to the organiser.

Additionally, parades and fireworks displays associated with Halloween that were due to take place in November at the theme parks run by Samsung C&T Corp. and Hotel Lotte Co., Everland in Yongin and Lotte World in Jamsil, were postponed. The company’s Halloween celebration, which was scheduled to be streamed online, has been cancelled, according to SM Entertainment. According to Yonhap News, Starbucks Korea and a few department retailers have stopped advertising Halloween-related goods.

The stampede took place on Saturday night in Seoul’s Itaewon neighbourhood during an event that attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year. According to fire officials, the incident happened around 10:15 p.m. as a sizable crowd of people entered a small alleyway behind the Hamilton Hotel.
