While he calls for mutual respect, his statement has drawn mixed reactions. Authorities have also imposed new restrictions on Namaz in public spaces, further fueling debate.
</excerpt>

Sambhal’s Circle Officer (CO) Anuj Chaudhary has again caused controversy with his statement made in a Peace Committee meeting. After his earlier comment on Holi, he now claimed, “If you want to serve Sewaiyan on Eid, you must also eat Gujiya on Holi.”

He specified coexistence concerning communities, claiming, “They should eat Gujiya, and we should eat Sewaiyan. But the problem arises when one side is willing and the other is not. This is where brotherhood breaks down, and that should not happen.”

Defending His Previous Holi Statement

The controversial remark was made at a peace committee meeting organized at Sadar Kotwali on Wednesday, preceding Eid and Ram Navami. Hindu and Muslim community members were present at the meeting to have peaceful celebrations.

Anuj Chaudhary also defended his previous remark on Holi, questioning why legal action was not taken against him if his statement was truly problematic. “If my statement was wrong, why didn’t people go to the High Court or Supreme Court? They could have had me punished,” he said.

Sambhal CO Anuj Chaudhary: “If my statement was so wrong, why wasn’t it challenged in the High Court or Supreme Court? They could have had me punished.” “If you want to offer Eid sevaiyan, you’ll have to eat gujiya too.” pic.twitter.com/5s7pSa0jFc

— Vicky Jaiswal (@vickypshiva) March 26, 2025

Holi Remark That Sparked a Political Uproar

Earlier, in a different Peace Committee meeting before Holi, CO Anuj Chaudhary had raised controversy by saying, “There are 52 Fridays in a year, and Holi comes only once. If someone has a problem with colors, they should stay indoors on that day.” This remark was politically criticized by opposition parties, who condemned it, while the BJP defended his views.

Namaz Restrictions on Roads

In the meantime, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shri Sh Chandra explained new guidelines on Namaz in public places. He said, “Namaz will only be offered at traditional places like mosques and Eidgahs. People should not gather unnecessarily on rooftops for prayers. The use of loudspeakers will also be regulated to avoid inconvenience.”

The comments made by Anuj Chaudhary, along with the fresh limitations imposed on Namaz, have again fueled debates regarding religious harmony and police presence within the region. While some believe these remarks are meant to increase equality, others are critical of them as they can further divide religions.

</excerpt>

Senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Mata Prasad Pandey announced on Monday that he will visit the violence-hit Sambhal district today, along with a party delegation, to meet the families of the victims who were shot and killed by the police. Akhilesh Yadav had announced compensation worth Rs five lakh each for the families of the victims who lost their lives in violence, Pandey said, adding that he was visiting Sambhal to provide them with the financial aid promised by the SP chief.
“I will visit Sambhal today. Our national president (Akhilesh Yadav) had announced that Rs five lakh each as compensation will be given to the families of those who were killed after being shot by the police. I am going to Sambhal to provide them with the compensation. I will have a team (delegation) with me which was formed to visit there earlier. The administration is not stopping me since I had already talked to the District Magistrate,” Pandey, who is Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
Pandey is likely to reach Delhi on a flight from Lucknow Airport and will travel to Sambhal by road. He said that he was visiting Sambhal on the directions from SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. The regional leaders will also accompany him, the senior SP leader added. Meanwhile, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Sambhal, Shrish Chandra on Saturday said that a total of 50 people have been arrested in connection with the violence near the Jama Masjid area in Sambhal district on November 24.
ASP said that one individual who was wanted in the case had been arrested from Delhi’s Batla House. “So far 50 people have been arrested after the incident of violence in Sambhal. A person named Adnan, who was wanted, was identified on the basis of CCTV and arrested from Batla House in Delhi and sent to jail. The person and his companions were involved in the incident,” he said.
The ASP said that the information is being gathered about who was behind them and action will also be taken against those who gave them shelter.
Work is currently underway to build a police post in the vacant ground near Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal in the wake of violence that erupted last month during an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) examination of a Mughal-era mosque, resulting in four fatalities and multiple injuries among police personnel and locals.
Reacting to this, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday said that the Uttar Pradesh government has money for nothing else but for liquor bars and police posts.

</excerpt>

After the December communal riots in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh in which five muslims were killed and several injured over a, Archaeological Survey of India survey of Jama Masjid which discovered Hindu temple remnants, the executive officer of the Municipal Corporation has said on Wednesday that they will revive the temple as soon as possible.

Dr Manibhushan Tiwari announced an initiative to restore wells and pilgrimage sites in the city to reconnect people with their religious traditions.

This comes after a temple was rediscovered during an anti-encroachment campaign by the district police and administration on December 14 in Sambhal. The Shiv-Hanuman temple had been closed since 1978.

On December 22, a team from the ASI uncovered an age-old stepwell in Chandausi, Sambhal. The discovery came after the reopening of the Shiv-Hanuman temple, which had been closed for 46 years.

During the excavation work in the Ladam Sarai area of Sambhal An old well was also discovered by the local administration on Wednesday, Tiwari said that the restoration process involves digging and renovating wells, as well as reviving pilgrimage sites. The Municipal Council plans to invest funds, potentially with the help of the Vandhan Yojana and the Tourism Department, to give these sites a new look.

“On the initiative of the District Magistrate, we are continuously digging all the wells in the city and pilgrimage sites to restore them…In the same sequence, we have also made a plan to restore the wells we are finding. Whatever pilgrimage sites we are finding, we are going to work on their revival. With the help of Vandhan Yojana and the Tourism Department, we will invest money in it and give it a new look so that we can reconnect people with our religious traditions.,” he said.

He said that the administration also planning to beautify the Parikrama path in the region to strengthen religious tradition.

“We are also planning to beautify it, we are making a Parikrama path around it, we are making a gate there, we are marking the importance of the well on the gate itself so that we can strengthen our religious traditions,” he added.

Meanwhile, the newly reopened Kartikeshwar Mahadev temple in Sambhal district witnessed its morning aarti on Wednesday, drawing devotees from across the country.

Priest Shashikant Shukla, who led the aarti, shared that people from various regions, including Banaras, Delhi, Vrindavan, and Muzaffarpur, have been visiting the temple to offer prayers and seek blessings.

“People are coming from far-off places, such as Banaras, Delhi, Vrindavan, and Muzaffarpur. Yesterday, people from the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Vrindavan came here to do Hari Kirtan. It was a great experience,” the Priest said.

Shukla also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for enabling the reopening of the temple, saying, “I’m deeply grateful to PM Modi and CM Yogi, as they enabled our Hindu community’s worship and facilitated the reopening of this temple for darshan.”

</excerpt>

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, addressing the state Assembly on Monday, strongly asserted that the cultural traditions of Lord Ram, Krishna, and Buddha will endure in India, while the legacies of Babur and Aurangzeb will eventually fade away.

His remarks came amid a heated debate concerning the Opposition’s concerns over communal tensions arising from Hindu rallies passing through Muslim-dominated regions like Sambhal and Bahraich.

Yogi Adityanath’s Statement

In his address, Yogi Adityanath criticized the Opposition for suggesting that slogans and rallies in certain areas could incite violence.

“The traditions of Lord Ram, Krishna, and Buddha will remain in India, while Babur’s and Aurangzeb’s legacies have no place in this land,” the Chief Minister declared.

He emphasized that India’s roots are deeply connected to its cultural and spiritual heritage, represented by revered figures like Lord Ram, and not by foreign rulers like Babur.

Opposition’s Concerns

The Opposition had raised concerns over the perceived provocations caused by Hindu religious rallies and slogan chanting in sensitive areas. They alleged that such actions might trigger communal unrest.

Key Concerns Raised:

Processions passing through Muslim-dominated areas.

Potential risks of violence and instability.

Yogi Adityanath’s Response

Rejecting the Opposition’s claims, Yogi Adityanath stressed the importance of maintaining peace and order while upholding India’s cultural traditions. He accused the Opposition of trying to divide the state along communal lines.

He further reiterated that India’s spiritual and historical identity is tied to Lord Ram, Lord Krishna, and Gautam Buddha—figures who symbolize unity, peace, and harmony.

Cultural Legacy vs Foreign Rule

Yogi Adityanath’s remarks also touched on India’s historical struggles against foreign rulers like Babur and Aurangzeb, who he claimed represented eras of oppression and division. In contrast, the traditions of Lord Ram, Krishna, and Buddha reflect:

Peace and unity

Cultural pride

Spiritual strength

Conclusion

The statement by Yogi Adityanath has reignited debates on India’s cultural identity and historical legacies. While the Opposition voiced concerns over potential communal disharmony, the Chief Minister firmly advocated for celebrating India’s spiritual heritage and dismissing the legacy of oppressive foreign rulers.

The issue continues to remain a topic of political discourse as the state navigates its path toward unity and cultural pride.

</excerpt>

Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly’s winter session, Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey announced that the Samajwadi Party (SP) would address the escalating communal tensions in the state, particularly focusing on the situation in Sambhal. Pandey emphasized the party’s commitment to holding the government accountable for any attempts to disrupt communal harmony.

Speaking to reporters, Pandey stated, “Tomorrow, we will give notice to the government regarding the communal incidents taking place and the efforts being made to disrupt harmony through riots. We will hold the government accountable for these incidents. Tomorrow is expected to witness significant uproar in the session.”

Responding to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s remarks about the recent discovery of a temple in Sambhal, Pandey questioned the timing of the temple’s recognition. “The Chief Minister spoke, and he has the right to do so. But why has the temple only been found now? Was it excavated, or was it already there and only recently recognized?” he asked.

Pandey reiterated the Samajwadi Party’s commitment to fighting against all forms of injustice across communities, highlighting issues such as unemployment and farmers’ grievances. He urged the government to address pressing matters in Badaun and Sambhal instead of avoiding discussions on these critical issues.

Criticizing the government for deflecting attention from key problems, Pandey remarked, “The biggest issue in the country today is unemployment. Farmers are facing numerous challenges, and to divert attention from these, the government is engaging in distractions. Why is the government afraid to answer the concerns of a state with 25 crore people?”

Additionally, Pandey expressed the Samajwadi Party’s opposition to the idea of early elections, contrasting it with Mayawati’s support for the proposal.

Yogi questioned 46-year closure of a historic temple in Sambhal

In response, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath questioned the 46-year closure of a historic temple in Sambhal and the lack of justice for victims of alleged violence during that period. He accused previous governments of neglecting faith and heritage, asking, “Did the administration suddenly build such an ancient temple overnight? Why have the culprits responsible for the massacre in Sambhal 46 years ago not been punished?”

Adityanath also raised hypothetical questions regarding developments in Ayodhya, stating that the transformation of the city and the construction of the Ram temple have brought happiness to residents and devotees. He accused certain groups of opposing these changes, claiming they had inserted the word “secular” into the Constitution, undermining its essence.

The Chief Minister’s comments followed the rediscovery and reopening of a 400-year-old Lord Shiva and Hanuman temple in Sambhal, which had been closed since 1978. The temple was uncovered during an inspection related to encroachment and electricity theft, with officials announcing plans to restore it to its original structure.

Earlier in the day, amid rising tensions, the regional administration initiated an anti-encroachment operation to clear public spaces of unauthorized constructions. According to Sambhal SDM Vandana Mishra, the drive specifically targets public area encroachments and has been actively carried out in Chandauli for the past two months.

“The anti-encroachment drive is focused on clearing encroachments from public spaces. A similar drive has been running in Chandauli for the last two months. Additionally, a campaign against electricity theft is underway in Sambhal,” she said.

On Saturday morning, an anti-encroachment operation was conducted in the Shahi Jama Masjid area. DM Pensiya spoke to ANI, stating, “In the morning, we checked whether loudspeakers were contributing to unnecessary noise pollution. During the inspection, widespread electricity theft was discovered. Around 15 to 20 houses and religious places were found to be involved. At a mosque, we found 59 fans, a fridge, a washing machine, and approximately 25 to 30 light points, all with the meter switched off. An intensive checking campaign is ongoing.”

Meanwhile, the Shiv-Hanuman Temple in Sambhal, which had been closed since 1978, was reopened on Sunday. The temple premises were cleaned, and electricity connections were restored. CCTV cameras were also installed for security. Vishnu Sharan Rastogi, patron of the Nagar Hindu Sabha, confirmed that the temple had reopened after 46 years, explaining that it had remained closed due to the lack of a resident priest.

Sambhal Circle Officer (SO) Anuj Kumar Chaudhary, who was part of the inspection team, said, “We received information about encroachment in the area. Upon inspection, we discovered the temple.”

Police personnel have been stationed outside the Shiv-Hanuman Temple, which reopened after 46 years, and an aarti was performed earlier that morning.

Discovery During Inspection

The temple was rediscovered during a district inspection related to electricity theft. This inspection took place on Saturday. Vishnu Sharan Rastogi, Patron of the Nagar Hindu Sabha, confirmed that the temple had been closed since 1978.

Preparations for Reopening

After the discovery, the temple premises were cleaned, and electricity was restored. Additionally, CCTV cameras were installed for security. Rajiv Kumar Gupta, a devotee, shared, “I came to see the temple and performed the Pooja. This temple is around 400 years old. I had seen it on TV and WhatsApp.”

Prayer Ceremony and Caretaker Plans

Furthermore, Acharya Brahm Shukla performed the prayer ceremony. He noted, “We cleaned the temple and performed the aarti. A Brahmin should be appointed here to stay. Until then, we will take responsibility.”

Plans for Restoration

Sambhal Sub-Divisional Magistrate Vandana Mishra outlined plans to restore the temple. She stated, “The premises have been cleaned, and electricity is restored. CCTVs are being installed for security. We will restore the temple to its original structure.”

Moreover, Mishra added that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) had been contacted to assist with the restoration. Police presence will remain at the temple for added security.

Ancient Well Revealed

In addition, District Magistrate Rajendra Pensiya visited the site and reported that an ancient well was uncovered after a ramp was removed. “When we dismantled the ramp, the well was revealed,” he explained.

Action Against Encroachment

Finally, the temple was found during an inspection for electricity theft. Pensiya confirmed, “The temple will be handed over to the community. Action will be taken against those who encroached on it.”

</excerpt>

In her maiden speech in the Lok Sabha, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra spearheaded the opposition’s response to the government’s policies, addressing pressing issues such as the Unnao rape case and the recent violence in Sambhal. Her speech, delivered on the first day of a significant parliamentary debate, was met with a mix of cheers and jeers from the assembly.

Priyanka Gandhi’s remarks came as a direct rebuttal to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s opening statements. She shared poignant stories from the families affected by the Sambhal violence, particularly focusing on two young boys, Adnan and Uzair, who lost their father, a tailor, to police gunfire.

“A few days ago, some people from the bereaved families of Sambhal came to meet us… there were two children among them – Adnan and Uzair. One was my son’s age (Raihan Vadra is 24) and the other was around 17. Their father was a tailor who had one dream… to see his sons educated,” she recounted.

Gandhi continued, “The police shot their father dead… Adnan told me he would grow up to be a doctor and realise his father’s dream… a dream instilled in him by the Constitution of India.”

Importance of the Constitution in Empowering Citizens

In her speech, she emphasized the importance of the Constitution in empowering citizens to seek justice and voice their concerns against the government. “Our Independence struggle was a unique one in the world as it was based on truth, non-violence,” she stated.

Furthermore, she criticized the government’s attempts to undermine reservation policies through lateral entry and privatization, asserting that such actions threaten the foundational principles of equality and justice enshrined in the Constitution.

Priyanka Gandhi’s address marks a significant moment in her political career, as she positions herself as a key figure in the opposition’s fight for justice and accountability.

The autopsy reports of four individuals killed in Sunday’s clashes in Sambhal have revealed discrepancies regarding the source of the bullet wounds. Moradabad divisional commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh stated on Tuesday that the bullets that caused the fatal injuries did not match the type of ammunition used by the Uttar Pradesh Police.

No Bullets Recovered During Postmortem

Singh confirmed that no bullets were retrieved from the bodies during the autopsies. The absence of bullets has fueled debates, especially amid allegations that the deaths resulted from police firing.

The victims, identified as Ayan, Bilal, Naeem, and Kaif, reportedly suffered gunshot wounds. According to a police official, Ayan’s abdomen injury damaged his liver, while the other three sustained chest wounds. Additionally, autopsy reports revealed antemortem injuries, including bruises on the knees, elbows, and foreheads of the deceased, indicating trauma before their deaths.

Forensic Investigation Ordered

To ascertain the type of bullets used, the autopsy findings and photographs of the injuries are being sent for forensic analysis. A senior police officer reiterated that no 9mm bullets, typically used by UP Police, were involved. He emphasized that officers deployed during the clash only used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Internet Ban and Heightened Security

As tensions remain high, local authorities have extended the internet ban in the region for another 24 hours, while security forces maintain a strong presence to prevent further unrest.

Allegations of Looting and Arson by Protesters

In a separate incident, sub-inspector Mohd Shah Faisal filed an FIR detailing violence by the mob during the clashes. According to the FIR, rioters looted a magazine containing 10 cartridges from Faisal while attempting to seize his service pistol. The mob also burned his motorcycle and a police patrol bike.

“The violent mob tried to snatch my service pistol while I was trying to pacify them. I somehow managed to keep the pistol, but the magazine and its ten cartridges were stolen by the mob. It seems that the mob had come well prepared,” Faisal wrote in his statement.

The FIR also mentioned that the rioters were armed with hockey sticks and canes. They damaged CCTV cameras, pelted stones, and injured Faisal along with two constables, Gopal Singh and Nishant Malik.

Violence Erupts Over Mosque Survey

The violence in Sambhal began on Sunday morning when protesters opposed a court-ordered survey at the Shahi Jama Masjid. The survey aimed to verify claims that the mosque was built over a Hindu temple during Mughal emperor Babur’s rule in 1529. The clashes left four dead and over 20 police personnel injured.

Authorities are investigating the events, focusing on both the origin of the fatal bullets and the violent actions of the mob. The situation remains tense, with strict security measures in place to restore order.

</excerpt>

Four people were killed, and several others injured, including 20 police officers, during violent protests in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal on Sunday. The unrest erupted over a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Masjid, with allegations that the mosque was built during the Mughal era by demolishing a temple.

A case has been registered against Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rahman Barq and Sohail Iqbal, the son of local MLA Iqbal Mehmood, accusing them of inciting violence and mobilizing protesters. In response to the unrest, internet services have been suspended for 24 hours, schools and colleges have been shut, and prohibitory orders banning public gatherings are in effect.

The violence began when hundreds of protesters opposed the survey, leading to stone pelting and vehicles being set ablaze. Police used tear gas to control the mob, but the clashes persisted for hours. Visuals showed protesters throwing stones from rooftops near the Shahi Masjid, and later, police attempting to disperse crowds in narrow alleys.

Among those killed were Nauman, Bilal, Naim, and Mohd Kaif. Allegations suggest the victims sustained gunshot wounds, though authorities say the exact cause of death will be confirmed after autopsies. Over 20 people have been detained, including two women, with charges under the National Security Act (NSA likely for those involved in the violence.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from political parties. The Congress accused the BJP of orchestrating a “well-planned conspiracy,” alleging that police fired directly at protesters. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also blamed the BJP government for fueling violence to distract from alleged electoral misconduct.

The BJP dismissed these accusations, alleging that opposition parties from the INDIA alliance were trying to incite unrest following their losses in the Lok Sabha elections. BJP leaders urged those opposed to the court’s decision to seek legal remedies instead of resorting to violence.

Tensions had been escalating since November 19, when the first survey of the mosque was conducted following a petition claiming a Harihar temple once stood at the site. The second survey was completed on Sunday despite the violence. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident, and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has been urged to take charge of the disputed site.

</excerpt>

Violence broke out this morning in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, in a court-ordered survey of the historic Mughal-era Jama Masjid mosque that has been a point of contention over the mosque’s construction on the premises of a Hindu temple. Three people have been reported dead so far in clashes between locals and police. The protests began when crowds gathered to block the survey, throwing stones at police and setting over ten cars on fire. The police responded with tear gas and received over 30 injuries among the policemen.

Aunjaneya Kumar Singh Divisional Commissioner confirmed the death of Naeem, Bilal, and Nauman. Some police personnel, including the superintendent’s gunner, were also injured. The survey, which began at 7:30 am, is part of a legal petition claiming the mosque was built over a Hindu temple, which is supported by the historical texts like *Baburnamah* and Ain-e-Akbari, which state that a temple here was destroyed in 1529 by Babur, who later established the Mughal Empire.

While supporters of the survey argue that it is an initiative toward unearthing actual history, Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi and leaders of the Samajwadi Party have disapproved of it, considering it a provocation against the Places of Worship Act, 1991, which had sealed the sanctity of religious sites. SP’s Akhilesh Yadav accuses the BJP-led government of exploiting the current unrest to sidestep allegations of electoral malpractices in the recently held bypolls.

The survey continued with videography and photography support, as court order, and the report is due on November 29. The police arrested 15 persons including three females in this regard. SP MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq said that the survey should be withdrawn in the light of Places of Worship Act and reiterated that the Jamma Masjid should not be touched.
