Many women face dissatisfaction with their sex lives, a problem that often goes unaddressed by healthcare professionals. Despite the prevalence of sexual health concerns such as low libido, lack of arousal, painful sex, and absent orgasms, many women find that their doctors do not inquire about these issues. Could sexual aids, like vibrators, dildos, or pelvic floor dilators, be part of the solution? While the topic of sexual devices remains largely unspoken in medical practice, there is growing interest in whether healthcare providers should provide guidance on their use.

Increasing Popularity of Vibrators Among Women

Studies show that the use of vibrators is on the rise among women. According to recent data, more than half of women in the U.S. have used a vibrator at some point in their lives. Among women who have sex with women, the number rises to over 75%. Research indicates that in 2009, around 52% of women reported using a vibrator during sexual activity, and by 2022, that number had increased to about 80%. Several studies suggest that using genital vibration stimulation devices leads to significant improvements in arousal, orgasm, sexual function, and satisfaction. For some women, these devices also help alleviate discomfort during sex.

The Many Types of Sexual Devices

Sexual devices, commonly referred to as sex toys, encompass a wide range of products designed to enhance sexual pleasure. These devices come in many shapes, sizes, and materials, and are used for both solo and partnered activity. Vibrators and dildos are the most commonly used sex toys. These can be designed for internal or external stimulation and vary in intensity and speed, with options that are battery-powered or electrically operated.

Some devices are designed specifically for vaginal stimulation, while others provide a combination of both vaginal and clitoral stimulation. Vibrators can be handheld, worn on a finger, or used hands-free, and some even come with straps or harnesses to hold them in place. Dildos, which are phallus-shaped, are available in various styles, including single-ended, double-sided, strap-on, and underwear varieties. For anal stimulation, devices like butt plugs and beads are available, often designed with safety features such as a string or wide flange to prevent upward migration.

Who Should Discuss the Use of Sex Toys?

Healthcare providers are in a unique position to help patients who are interested in improving their sexual health. For some women, the use of sex toys may be a potential solution to issues like sexual dissatisfaction, arousal, and orgasm concerns. However, many women may be hesitant to approach their healthcare providers about this topic, unsure if it’s appropriate or if their concerns will be taken seriously.

The first step in addressing this issue is through open communication about sexual health. Healthcare providers can initiate discussions by asking about sexual history and exploring attitudes toward sexual devices. Education and counseling play an important role in helping women make informed decisions about sex toys. It’s important to note that some women may have negative feelings about sex toys, which could make them less likely to consider their use. For these individuals, a neutral approach, such as referring to them as “marital aids” or “sexual health devices,” might be more effective.

Psychological and Emotional Considerations

When healthcare providers recommend the use of sex aids, they must also be prepared to address potential emotional, psychological, and interpersonal concerns. Some women may worry that using sex devices could negatively impact intimacy with their partner, while others might have concerns about entitlement or health and safety issues. Healthcare providers should be ready to discuss these concerns openly and offer referrals to sex therapists or counselors when necessary.

Breaking the Silence Around Sex and Healthcare

While sex toys and devices are becoming increasingly popular, many women remain hesitant to seek guidance on their use from healthcare providers. As sexual health becomes an integral part of overall well-being, it’s important for healthcare professionals to create a supportive and informed environment for women to address these concerns. The discussion around sex toys may help women enhance their sexual satisfaction and improve their quality of life, and it’s time that healthcare providers step up to offer advice, support, and education on this often-overlooked topic.

</excerpt>

FDA Says Knockoff Versions of Lilly Obesity Drug Must Come Off the Market

In a significant move to protect consumers and ensure the safety of medical treatments, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken action against unauthorized, knockoff versions of the popular obesity drug, Mounjaro, manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company. The FDA’s decision to remove these counterfeit versions from the market has raised concerns about the risks associated with unapproved medications and the importance of securing treatments for obesity in the U.S.

Obesity, a complex and pervasive health issue, has long been one of the most pressing challenges in public health. The rise of medications that can help patients manage their weight has provided hope for many individuals struggling with obesity and related conditions, including Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. However, with the promise of these treatments comes the risk of counterfeit drugs and unregulated versions flooding the market.

The case surrounding the removal of unauthorized Mounjaro generics is a critical reminder of the complexities involved in pharmaceutical regulation, the importance of patient safety, and the measures the FDA must take to combat the growing issue of counterfeit drugs.

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription medication developed by Eli Lilly and Company for the treatment of obesity and Type 2 diabetes. The drug has been celebrated for its ability to help patients lose weight while simultaneously improving blood sugar control. Mounjaro works by targeting two hormones in the body, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), both of which help regulate blood sugar levels and promote weight loss.

As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, Mounjaro has been shown to reduce food intake, increase feelings of satiety, and improve metabolic processes, making it an attractive option for those struggling with obesity. Clinical trials have shown that patients using Mounjaro experience significant weight loss, with many losing up to 20-25% of their body weight.

The approval of Mounjaro by the FDA marked a milestone in the treatment of obesity, a condition that affects over 40% of adults in the United States. In addition to its weight loss benefits, Mounjaro has shown potential for improving other health outcomes, such as lowering blood pressure and reducing cholesterol levels, further cementing its place as a revolutionary treatment for metabolic health.

The Problem of Knockoff Drugs

Despite the proven benefits of Mounjaro, the rise in demand for weight loss medications has led to the proliferation of unauthorized versions of the drug entering the market. These knockoff drugs are often marketed as generics or alternatives to the original medication but lack the rigorous testing and regulatory approval required by the FDA.

Knockoff drugs, including those imitating Mounjaro, are a significant concern due to several reasons:

Unregulated Manufacturing: Counterfeit drugs are often produced in unregulated facilities without the oversight of health authorities. This means there is no guarantee of the quality, purity, or consistency of the drug.

Health Risks: Knockoff versions of drugs like Mounjaro can pose serious health risks. The ingredients used in counterfeit medications may be harmful, ineffective, or even dangerous. In some cases, these drugs could cause severe allergic reactions, side effects, or interactions with other medications.

Lack of Efficacy: Counterfeit drugs may not work as intended. Patients relying on these products may experience little to no weight loss or improvement in their condition, leading to frustration and potentially dangerous health consequences as they continue ineffective treatments.

Exploitation of Vulnerable Populations: Individuals seeking effective obesity treatments may be particularly vulnerable to the allure of cheaper alternatives. Fraudulent online advertisements and unapproved distributors take advantage of these patients’ desperation for a solution, leading them to purchase unregulated and unsafe medications.

Undermining Legitimate Drug Development: The existence of knockoff versions undermines the pharmaceutical industry’s efforts to develop safe, effective treatments for obesity. These counterfeit products devalue the hard work and significant investment that goes into developing and bringing a legitimate drug to market.

FDA Action and the Importance of Regulation

The FDA’s recent action to remove unauthorized versions of Mounjaro from the market is part of its ongoing effort to protect consumers from counterfeit drugs and ensure that all medications meet the highest standards of safety, efficacy, and quality. In its announcement, the FDA stated that it had identified several companies selling counterfeit versions of Mounjaro, which were being marketed online and through unauthorized channels.

The FDA has been working to crack down on counterfeit drugs for years, and this action against knockoff Mounjaro is a continuation of its efforts. The agency emphasizes that only drugs approved by the FDA, including Mounjaro, should be used for the treatment of obesity. Medications that are not FDA-approved or not obtained through licensed pharmacies are considered dangerous and illegal.

The FDA’s actions included notifying the manufacturers of the unauthorized versions of Mounjaro and requiring them to cease the sale and distribution of their products. The agency also warned consumers to be cautious when purchasing medications online and to verify that the drugs they are buying come from a reputable, licensed pharmacy.

The importance of the FDA’s oversight cannot be overstated. The agency plays a crucial role in ensuring that the drugs Americans rely on are both safe and effective. Through rigorous clinical trials, monitoring, and post-market surveillance, the FDA works to maintain the integrity of the pharmaceutical industry and protect public health.

Impact on the Obesity Drug Market

The action taken by the FDA against knockoff Mounjaro products has significant implications for the obesity drug market as a whole. As obesity continues to be a major public health issue in the U.S. and around the world, the demand for effective weight loss treatments is growing rapidly. In recent years, a number of new medications, including Mounjaro, have entered the market, offering hope to millions of individuals struggling with obesity.

However, the rise of counterfeit versions of these drugs highlights the challenges the industry faces in ensuring patient safety. As more obesity drugs become available, the potential for knockoff products to flood the market increases. The FDA’s efforts to regulate these drugs and remove counterfeit versions are essential to maintaining the integrity of the market and ensuring that patients receive safe, effective treatments.

At the same time, the increased demand for obesity medications has sparked debates over the accessibility and affordability of these treatments. As newer drugs like Mounjaro become more popular, insurance coverage and pricing remain significant barriers for many individuals seeking treatment. The emergence of knockoff drugs, while dangerous, may appeal to individuals looking for cheaper alternatives to FDA-approved treatments. This underscores the need for both effective regulation and policy changes that improve access to safe, affordable obesity treatments for all.

What Consumers Can Do

For consumers, the key takeaway from the FDA’s action against counterfeit Mounjaro is the importance of purchasing medications from legitimate, licensed sources. Patients should always consult with their healthcare providers before starting any new medication and should only purchase drugs from reputable pharmacies, either in person or online. The FDA advises consumers to check for official seals of approval, such as the FDA logo, and to verify that online pharmacies are licensed to sell medications.

Consumers should also be cautious about buying medications from unapproved websites or other sources that do not require a prescription. While the internet offers convenience, it can also be a breeding ground for counterfeit drugs. It is essential for patients to be vigilant and informed about where they are getting their medications from.

The Future of Obesity Treatments and Drug Regulation

The FDA’s crackdown on counterfeit Mounjaro is just one example of the growing need for robust regulation in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly as it relates to obesity treatments. As more medications for weight loss are developed and approved, the need for stringent oversight will only increase.

The future of obesity treatments will likely involve a combination of pharmaceutical interventions, lifestyle changes, and personalized care. As treatments like Mounjaro continue to show promise in managing weight and improving metabolic health, the focus will shift to ensuring that these treatments are accessible, affordable, and safe for all patients.

For patients, the takeaway from this issue is clear: always consult with healthcare professionals, purchase medications from trusted sources, and be cautious about the risks associated with unregulated treatments. For the pharmaceutical industry, the focus will be on maintaining high standards of drug development and distribution while balancing the need for innovation with the imperative to protect public health.

The FDA’s recent decision to remove knockoff versions of Mounjaro from the market is a necessary step in safeguarding public health and ensuring that obesity treatments remain safe and effective. As counterfeit drugs continue to pose a risk to patients, the FDA’s actions serve as a reminder of the importance of regulation in the pharmaceutical industry. The rise of obesity drugs like Mounjaro is a promising development in the fight against obesity, but the challenge remains to ensure these medications are accessible, affordable, and, most importantly, safe for consumers. The FDA’s ongoing vigilance is critical in maintaining the integrity of the drug market and protecting patients from the dangers of unapproved medications.

</excerpt>

On a chilling November night in 1973, the corridors of Mumbai’s King Edward Memorial Hospital bore witness to a tragedy that would haunt the nation’s conscience for decades to come. Aruna Shanbaug, a vibrant young nurse dedicated to her calling, descended into the hospital’s basement, unaware that her life was about to be irrevocably altered. In the shadows lurked Sohanlal Bhartha, a ward boy whose soul had been consumed by a twisted desire. As Aruna prepared for her next shift, Bhartha struck with a savagery that defied human comprehension. Fearing recognition, Bhartha strangled her with a dog chain, resulting in severe oxygen deprivation to her brain and leaving her in a vegetative state. The attack also damaged her brain stem, condemning her to a bedridden existence for the remainder of her life.

While Bhartha walked free after a mere seven years (which was reduced to six), Aruna remained shackled to her hospital bed, dependent on the compassion of her colleagues who became her family. For 42 agonizing years, Aruna lay trapped in the prison of her own body, her once-bright eyes now vacant, her skilful hands rendered useless. Each spoonful of mashed food, each gentle turn to prevent bedsores, was a testament to their unwavering devotion and a stark reminder of the injustice that had befallen her. In 2011, the Supreme Court recognized passive euthanasia in the Aruna Shanbaug case, permitting the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment for patients unable to make informed decisions.
Fast forward 50 years to August 9, 2024. A young doctor, exhausted and sleep-deprived after a gruelling 36-hour shift at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, sought a moment’s respite in a seminar room. This postgraduate trainee, dedicated to healing others, could not have foreseen the horror that awaited her. The subsequent post-mortem report would churn even the strongest stomachs, revealing the brutal nature of the attack. The tragedy ignited a nationwide doctors’ strike, as medical professionals united in solidarity with their fallen colleague.

One haunting question echoes: As a woman, what was her fault? Her only “crime” was being a working woman, a healthcare professional committed to caring for patients. Why was such cruelty inflicted upon those who dedicate their lives to caring for others? This incident forces us to confront a chilling reality: Where is our country headed if we can’t protect those who protect us? How can we call ourselves a civilized society when those who heal are themselves subjected to such inhumane treatment? The parallels between this case and Aruna Shanbaug’s tragedy from half a century ago are both striking and disheartening, reminding us of the long road ahead in ensuring the safety and dignity of healthcare workers, particularly women. It is undeniable that this issue is about safeguarding our doctors, but the underlying problem remains that women in our country are not safe at all. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat to women’s safety in India, particularly in professional spaces.

The safety of our healthcare workers is paramount, but it’s just one facet of the larger issue of women’s safety in India. We must strive to build a society where no woman lives in fear, regardless of her profession or background. While legislative measures are crucial, they alone cannot address the deep-rooted cultural issues that contribute to violence against women There’s an urgent need for a societal shift in attitudes towards women professionals, particularly in male-dominated spaces.

In a stark reminder of the deeply ingrained societal norms, a recent event organized for female lawyers—another male-dominated profession—brought to light an unsettling reality. The invitation explicitly stated it was a dance and music party strictly for women. Yet, when I questioned the male members about their attendance, I was met with the response, “Someone has to make sure that they are safe and they get home safely, the singers, the band, the service staff are all males.” This incident prompts a troubling question: Why do women, who have proven their strength and capability by entering challenging professions like law, still require male protection in social settings? Is it that men are more acutely aware of the potential threats posed by other men and the level of depravity some of them may be capable of; while women remain blissfully ignorant? The irony deepens when we consider that even those of us who question these norms find ourselves perpetuating them.

One night, I found myself staying awake beyond my usual hours to ensure female students returned home safely after a university event, even calling male students to confirm the women’s safe arrival. This cognitive dissonance between our ideals of women’s independence and our instinctive protective behaviours underscores the complex, deeply rooted nature of gender dynamics in our society. It serves as a poignant reminder that true equality and safety for women remain elusive, even in seemingly progressive professional circles.

Horrific incidents like sexual assault, leave indelible scars not just on the victims, but on their families, colleagues, and the entire medical community. The young doctor in Kolkata, like Aruna before her, had dreams, aspirations, and loved ones waiting for her to return home. One can scarcely fathom the depths of anguish that her parents endured upon seeing their daughter’s body, once full of life and promise, now lying motionless and grotesquely distorted. I can’t help but wonder about the societal confrontation and pressure her father must have braved in providing her an education, and how many people must have advised against sending his daughter to medical college. Tragically, incidents like these validate the backward thinking of those who argue against women’s higher education, allowing them to say, “See, this is what happens when a girl goes out into the world.” Such attitudes perpetuate a cycle of fear and restriction, threatening to undo hard-won progress in women’s empowerment and education. Her colleagues, who had shared countless shifts and moments of camaraderie, now face the trauma of losing a friend and the fear that they could be next. The ripple effects of such violence extend far beyond the immediate tragedy, eroding the trust and safety that should be fundamental in any free society.

It forces us to confront an uncomfortable truth: in failing to protect our girls, we are failing ourselves. Each attack on a woman is an attack on the very fabric of our society, tearing at the bonds of care and compassion that hold us together. As we grapple with these harsh realities, we must ask ourselves: How many more Arunas and unnamed victims must we mourn before we take decisive action to create a truly safe environment for women? When one contemplates the final, terrifying moments of the Kolkata victim’s life, the haunting words quoted by Justice Katju in Aruna’s case resonate with chilling relevance. Mirza Ghalib’s poignant verse, “Marte hain aarzoo mein marne ki, Maut aati hai par nahin aati” (One dies longing for death, but death, despite being around, is elusive), takes on a devastating new meaning.

</excerpt>

As we all know by now, the recent rape case at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College has reignited the demand for a special law or new legislation to protect female staff in hospitals. Over the past few years, we have witnessed how the government has enacted and amended rape laws in response to public outcry. From the Bhanwari Devi case, which resulted in the Supreme Court’s Vishakha Guidelines of 1997, through to Nirbhaya (2012), bringing sweeping and radical changes to criminal laws including amendments to Juvenile Justice Act where Justice Verma Committee recommendations were implemented.

However, these changes in the law have not stopped the rape cases numbers from increasing. A woman is sexually assaulted every 15 minutes across the country, according to a government report – and in 2022, police received 31,000 reports of rape. This is evident because the number of rape cases has not decreased, even with changing laws. Clearly, our legal system has not made an impression deterrent in society. But in such situations, who should be held accountable? Let’s take the recent R.G. Kar case as an example to discuss this problem. It was found that several corruption cases had been registered against the principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, yet no action was taken against him. Why? Despite allegations and evidence being presented to the appropriate authority, no steps were taken. In fact, those who filed complaints were threatened by government officials and transferred from R.G. Kar Hospital. This clearly indicates corruption and a misuse of the powers given to the executive body.

In India, the doctrine of the separation of powers is followed. This constitutional law doctrine divides government responsibilities into three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. The goal is to prevent any one branch from having too much power and to provide checks and balances. Each branch is given certain powers to check and balance the others. However, in reality, we see a dominance and overlapping of power, undermining this principle. Considering this recent case when it mentioned by the legislature that the medical college has to follow certain guidelines for their staff and patients when why there is no check system in the medical institutions? Its compulsory for everyone to follow Vishakha Guidelines in the workplace but how many institutions or workplace are actually following this guideline strictly. In the judiciary, for instance, the Criminal Law Amendment Act of 2013 mandates that trials for certain offenses must be completed within two months of the chargesheet being filed. The Act also requires that trials be held daily, with adjournments allowed only for compelling reasons that must be recorded. However, the pressing question remains: how many cases have actually been resolved within this timeframe? In rape cases, the victim and her family are repeatedly traumatized—not just by the crime itself but also by society, the media, the police, and the judiciary. Even if justice is eventually served, they often find that half of their lives and finances have been consumed by court fees, leaving them in a state of despair.

When the accused comes from an influential family, as in the Jessica Lal murder case, the pursuit of justice can become even more prolonged. If we truly want to control crime in our society, we must enforce a proper separation of powers and, to do that, we must first tackle corruption. Corruption is the root cause of society’s apathy, where people believe that filing a case or protesting is futile because no one will hear their plea. Even if they manage to file a case, they are often pressured to withdraw it or threatened by goons.

This is the current reality in India. The situation cannot be changed merely by enacting new laws; it requires proper implementation and execution of existing ones. In light of the recent R.G. Kar case, it’s time for a mass feminist movement—one where every woman, whether working or not, student or not, regardless of caste, creed, religion, or marital status, raises her voice against corruption, the system, and those responsible for our protection who fail to fulfil their duties. It’s time for another “Me Too movement” but this time it should be a “Safety Movement in the Workplace”. With this movement, women and female students from all sectors across India can highlight security issues they face in their workplaces so that by gathering information from their grievances, government considers can frames uniform laws and policies regarding workplace safety.

</excerpt>

Remember how some kids used to bully you in school or college or that nasty colleague in your previous workplace… You would wonder what you have done to deserve this and why they would pick on you only when you had done nothing to please or displease them. Your analysis later revealed that you were perhaps the most vulnerable and seemingly easy prey in the eyes of these (predator) bullies.

Rape is bullying of the worst order. Often the act of rape is not driven primarily by sexual desire as much as the need to exert power and control over another person. Perpetrators use violence to dominate, humiliate, or degrade their victims, often stemming from their own feelings of inadequacy, anger, or resentment.

What would you tell your teenage version about how to deal with those bullies then. Put him in the right place by awarding a few punches or escalate the matter to higher authorities like the principal, the teacher or parent, right? But what happens if there is no way to address the bully in the system? That is exactly why the RG Kar type of incidents happen in the first place- there is no fear of facing consequences due to weak legal systems, societal silence, and an ecosystem where there is lack of support for victims. In fact we as a society almost end up blaming and shaming the victim rather than the perpetrator of the crime.

Look at the history of sex crimes in India and it has only gone from bad to worse. In 2012, this was in Delhi and they named her Nirbhaya. In 2017 they didn’t just rape her, they hung her on a tree. This was in Unnao and they named her Nirbhaya 2. In 2019 they didn’t just rape her, they burnt her alive. This was in Hyderabad and they named her Nirbhaya 3. And now they brutally raped and killed a resident doctor. over 21 cases of violent rape have been reported in India within the last 10 days. And all we are doing is burning candles, blackening our DP (display picture), commenting on a few facebook pages.

The point is unless there is a tangible action plan, it will be status quo. We will move on without action and change. No laws will change. Society will not change. More such incidents will happen. There is no other way but to have a fear of the whip now. Often it’s not the severity of the punishment but the certainty of it that will act as a deterrent for the criminals.

It’s high time for the government to pass a bill for immediate punishment for rapists. That should set a precedent and send a message for rapists and potential rapists. When currency can be changed overnight, when special session can be called to increase the salary of politicians, when Parliament can remain open all night for trust votes, wondering what is delaying to pass a stringent law against rape.

Rape is more of a “recreational crime” for men. It can be easily stopped if there is a deterrent. Such ghastly episodes cannot and should not be repeated in a civilized society. But we need to learn some lessons- as men, as women, as a society.

Men need to take a strong stand against men who indulge in loose talk against any and every woman. Often cultural attitudes such as misogyny, patriarchy, can in a subtle and almost invisible way, tend to normalize violence against women where such behaviour is tolerated or even encouraged. A male politician saying “Boys will be boys” sends the message that men can go around like “khula saand’ – be shaped by the wind and the weather while all rules of morality, ethics and propriety are attached to women. These kinds of cultural attitudes have no place in modern Indian society. Every individual, agnostic of gender, is responsible for their actions and answerable for them.

What can women do differently?

As women we need to have each other’s back and support each other. How many women say that they prefer a male boss to a female boss? Women having catfights, always being critical of one another does more harm than good in creating divisiveness. Remember, united we stand, divided we fall. As women, we need to raise good kids- boys who can respect women but also girls who can be cheerleaders for other women. Besides, women are blessed with gut instinct and power of intuition. Nurture that gift and educate your intuition. Most criminals lie in close quarters and vicinity. Make a mental note of people who act abnormal – those with an underlying psychological issue or disorder, such as antisocial personality disorder, psychopathy. Be alert and aware of your surroundings and notice the body language of people carefully. Often words can lie, but body lingo gives away many cues as to what is going on in the mind of individuals.

As a society we need to give a sense of security to everyone but especially women who are the essential building blocks of a society. Today a woman, whether she is 6- or 60-year-old, feels unsafe. Giving women a genuine sense of security involves more than just improving policing or enacting stricter laws; it requires a fundamental cultural shift that respects women’s autonomy, freedom, and rights. Only when society collectively addresses the complexities of this issue will women genuinely feel secure and equal. From Fear to Freedom, we need a new vision for women’s safety.

</excerpt>

The National Federation of Resident Doctors of AIIMS has filed an intervention application with the Supreme Court, expressing the concerns of resident doctors across AIIMS institutions in India. The federation requested the court to intervene in an ongoing case that the Supreme Court had initiated on its own to address the safety of healthcare professionals.

Previously, in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 21, the Supreme Court set up a National Task Force (NTF) to provide recommendations on ensuring the safety and security of health workers nationwide.

Advocate Tanvi Dubey is representing the National Federation of Resident Doctors of AIIMS in this case. The federation emphasised the need for immediate protective measures for doctors until the NTF’s recommendations are put into effect. Additionally, the organisation argued that healthcare workers, by virtue of their profession, deserve specific safety protections at their workplaces.

Other organisations, including the United Doctors Front Association and the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA), have also approached the Supreme Court to be involved in the suo motu case.

</excerpt>

The rape and murder of the young doctor at the Kolkatta based RG Kar Medical College has stunned the entire nation. Cutting across demographics, genders and professions, the country has risen in one voice and taken to the streets demanding swift action against the perpetrators of this heinous act. If there is any quibbling it is amongst the political class that is indulging in the usual blame game but even then the ruling TMC government of West Bengal stands isolated as its allies from the INDIA bloc have also condemned both the act as well as the state government’s response. The Congress, which lost the UPA government partly because of the gruesome 2010 gangrape and murder of a young girl in the capital on its watch, has been one of the first to demand swift action against the guilty.

Politics (and politicians) aside, the medical community has also risen in protest demanding swift justice as well as the enactment of a special law to ensure safety and security for the medical community as a whole. As many as 72 Padma Shri awardees have penned a letter to the Prime Minister asking for the same. The letter asks for a quick promulgation of a separate law to deal with violence, both physical and verbal, against doctors, medical professionals and medical institutions. Ironically the Prevention of Violence against Doctors, Medical Professionals and Medical Institutions bill was drafted in 2019 but it never made it to the parliament. During Covid however, the Centre had promulgated an ordinance to the Epidemic Diseases Act making violence against the medical professionals non bailable and punishable with a fine of Rs 5 lakh. The doctors would now want the government to take the next step and pass the bill specific to their safety.

Doctors are often at the receiving end of both verbal and physical abuse at the hands of irate patients who are faced with medical emergencies. But short staffing and long shifts have their own ask on the medical community. In addition, as one of the signatories, Dr Harsh Mahajan, Founder & MD Mahajan Imaging points out, if we cannot make our workplaces safe, how many parents would want their children to join the medical profession?

These are crucial issues that need to be dealt with for the medical professionals are one of the pillars of our community. As an initial response the government has reached out to some public hospitals such as the AIIMS in Delhi, with a promise to set up more CCTV cameras at strategic locations, enhanced security staff and stricter monitoring of entry and exit points. But it goes without saying that a lot more needs to be done.

The camera, positioned to face the toilet seat, was found inside a dustbin. The accused employee has been fired, and legal action is being taken. The incident raises concerns about privacy and safety in public places.
</excerpt>

A disturbing incident occurred at a popular coffee chain, Third Wave Coffee, in Bengaluru, where a hidden camera was allegedly discovered in the washroom on Saturday morning. An eyewitness reported that a smartphone was placed in the dustbin of the washroom by an employee, aiming the camera at the toilet seat. The employee has since been terminated, and legal action has been initiated.

Incident Details

A social media post by the eyewitness stated that a woman found the smartphone, which had been recording videos for approximately two hours. The phone was on flight mode to avoid making any noise, and the dustbin bag had a hole cut out specifically for the camera lens, concealing the rest of the device.

The woman immediately alerted the café staff, who identified the phone as belonging to one of their employees. The incident was reported to the police, who quickly arrived at the scene. Authorities are currently investigating the matter and taking appropriate action.

Coffee Chain’s Response

Third Wave Coffee assured customers that the safety and well-being of patrons are their top priority. They have terminated the accused employee and are working closely with authorities to ensure appropriate action is taken.

“The safety and well-being of our customers is always our priority. With regards to the isolated incident that occurred at BEL Road Cafe on August 10, the person under question has been immediately terminated. We have a stringent zero-tolerance policy and have initiated necessary legal action against him,” the chain told Hindustan Times.

Eyewitness Account

The eyewitness, who runs a popular cinephile Instagram account, expressed horror at the incident and urged vigilance in public washrooms. She emphasized that such invasions of privacy could occur anywhere, including cafes, restaurants, and bars.

“It can happen anywhere with any chain of cafes or restaurants, and even bars where people are not too much in their senses when they use washrooms. It’s not just trial rooms and hotel rooms where we need to watch out for hidden cams. Keep this in mind. The world is a sick place,” she added.

</excerpt>

Union Home Minister Amit Shah gave his remarks on terrorism on Friday. He said that terrorism is the most serious threat to global peace and security and that “protecting a terrorist is equivalent to promoting terrorism”.

Shah chaired the first session of the third ‘No Money for terror’ Ministerial Conference on the ‘Global Trends in Terrorist Financing and Terrorism’ theme. He gave these remarks while he was addressing the meeting. He said, “Terrorism is, undoubtedly, the most serious threat to global peace and security, but, the financing of terrorism is more dangerous than terrorism itself because the ‘Means and Methods’ of terrorism are nurtured from such funding”.

“Furthermore, the financing of terrorism weakens the economy of countries of the world,” he said.

According to Shah, India rejects terrorism in all of its manifestations and believes that no justification can be offered for acts like the murder of innocent people.

The Home Minister said that while he felt bad for the victims of terrorist atrocities around the world, we should never make concessions to this evil.

According to the Union Home Minister, India has been a victim of sponsored terrorism for a number of decades.

According to him, extremely serious terrorist acts of violence that were committed over an extended period of time and with coordination have forced Indian security personnel and people to deal with them.

The international society agrees that all manifestations of terrorism must be denounced, but according to Shah, terrorism’s manifestations and forms are constantly changing as a result of the technology revolution.

The Home Minister added that terrorists and terrorist organisations are quite adept at using contemporary weapons, information technology, and financial and cyberspace dynamics.

He claimed that the “Dynamite to Metaverse” and “AK-47 to Virtual Assets” transition of terrorism is unquestionably a cause for concern for all nations, and that we must all come up with a coordinated plan of action to combat it.

The threat of terrorism cannot and should not be connected to any particular nation, religion, or group, Shah continued.

The six pillars of India’s policy against the financing of terrorism were identified by the home minister.

“First – Strengthening the Legislative and Technological Framework, second – Creation of a Comprehensive Monitoring Framework, third – Actionable intelligence sharing mechanism and strengthening of the investigation and police operations, fourth – Provision for confiscation of property, fifth – Prevent misuse of legal entities and new technologies and sixth – Establishing international cooperation and coordination,” he said.

Shah highlighted the role of the amendment of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the nation’s fight against terrorism and it’s financing.

“India has strengthened the fight against terrorism and its financing, with the amendment of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, strengthening the NIA, and giving a new direction to financial intelligence. It is the result of our continuous efforts that terrorist incidents in India have come down drastically. This has also resulted in a drastic reduction in the economic losses caused by terrorism,” he said.
