</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar concluded a successful two-day official visit to the Netherlands from May 19 – 20, underscoring the strategic partnership between the two nations. The visit featured high-level meetings with top Dutch leadership, including Prime Minister Dick Schoof and Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp. It focused on strengthening cooperation across various sectors, from trade, technology and defence.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement on Tuesday, “External Affairs Minister (EAM), Dr S Jaishankar, paid an official visit to the Netherlands from 19-20 May 2025. During the visit, EAM called on HE Dick Schoof, Prime Minister of the Netherlands. Both sides expressed satisfaction at the growing strategic convergences in the India-Netherlands relationship, and agreed further to strengthen bilateral ties through regular high-level visits and exchanges. EAM conveyed India’s appreciation for the statement of solidarity from the Netherlands in the fight against terrorism”

EAM Jaishankar met with his counterpart, Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp, and reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral cooperation and regional and global matters of mutual interest. “The Ministers expressed satisfaction over the progress in diverse sectors, including trade & economy, science and technology, water, agriculture and health, education, culture and people-to-people ties. They also discussed ways of increasing collaboration in new and emerging sectors of digital technology, semiconductors, AI, and green hydrogen,” the statement said.
EAM Jaishankar also met with Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans and discussed opportunities to take forward the defence and security cooperation between the two countries to the next level. The two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in the defence sector further.
The MEA further said, “EAM also addressed leading strategic and international affairs experts from various think tanks in the Netherlands. The discussions focused on why India and the Netherlands/EU should engage more deeply in an era of multipolarity and strategic autonomy.”

During the visit, EAM also interacted with representatives of the Indian diaspora in the Netherlands. “EAM’s visit, coming within a month of the visit of Minister Caspar Veldkamp to India in April 2025, reflects the commitment of both sides for regular and sustained engagement between the two countries, and has led to further deepening of bilateral ties,” the statement added. EAM Jaishankar is on an official visit to the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany from May 19 to 24.

</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has urged the de-escalation of the conflict between India and Pakistan in immediate phone talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The telephonic exchanges come at a time when both countries are witnessing increased conflict, with Pakistan conducting missile and drone attacks on several Indian cities including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan.

US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed the negotiations, underscoring Rubio’s firm focus on lessening hostilities. The Secretary conveyed condolences over the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that resulted in several deaths, and reiterated the US’s resolve to support India in its battle against terrorism.

The dialogue mirrors the global anxiety regarding the surging border violence, with world powers appealing to both nations to value peace and diplomacy above further conflict.

</excerpt>

Hours after the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force launched precision attacks in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir as part of Operation Sindoor, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar gave the world a clear message. Going on Twitter, he announced, “The world must show zero tolerance for terrorism.”

The world must show zero tolerance for terrorism. #OperationSindoor pic.twitter.com/dmcCLfbMjN

— Dr. S. Jaishankar (@DrSJaishankar) May 7, 2025

India launched the coordinated tri-services operation in the early hours of Wednesday to retaliate against the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. During the attack, 25 Indian tourists and a pony ride operator were gunned down by terrorists linked to Pakistan-based groups.

The precision military action—covering nine terror launchpads and camps—was targeted at eliminating the infrastructure of groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Hizbul Mujahideen, and Jaish-e-Mohammad.

India’s Diplomatic Overdrive Picks Up Speed

After the strikes, India ramped up its diplomatic engagement across the globe. In the last week alone, Jaishankar discussed matters with counterparts of non-permanent member countries of the United Nations Security Council such as Algeria, Greece, Sierra Leone, Guyana, Panama, Slovenia, and Somalia. In the talks, he underlined India’s firm resolve to bring to book the perpetuators.

These diplomatic interactions are given extra significance since Pakistan is at present occupying a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council, a seat that changes every two years. By mobilizing other members of the UNSC, India seeks to diplomatically isolate Pakistan and strengthen the global consensus against state-sponsored terrorism.

Operation Sindoor: A Signal to the World

Operation Sindoor was the first since the 1971 war in which India utilized all three defence services simultaneously for a joint action across the border. But what is more significant, it reflects India’s advanced counter-terrorism doctrine—fast, precise, and supported by strategic diplomacy.

India has always accused Pakistan of hosting and supporting terror groups. New Delhi is now establishing a precedent with Jaishankar’s message that counter-terror operations need to cross borders as well as talk. It is time, he claimed, for the world to demonstrate “zero tolerance towards terrorism.”

Jaishankar, condemns Pahalgam terror attack, supports India’s call for justice.
</excerpt>

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has offered his utmost support to India following the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, the majority of whom were tourists, in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22. Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar expressed his appreciation for Guterres’ unequivocal condemnation of the attack. The attack, one of the bloodiest on non-combatants in the area in decades, has been universally condemned worldwide.

India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, in a tweet on Monday, shared that he had received a call from the UN Secretary-General, who expressed his “unequivocal condemnation” of the attack. “Appreciate his unequivocal condemnation of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Agreed on the importance of accountability,” Jaishankar wrote, adding that India is determined to bring the perpetrators, planners, and backers of the attack to justice.

Received a call from @UN SG @antonioguterres.

Appreciate his unequivocal condemnation of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Agreed on the importance of accountability.

India is resolved that the perpetrators, planners and backers of this attack are brought to justice.

— Dr. S. Jaishankar (@DrSJaishankar) April 29, 2025

A Call for International Solidarity

“Guterres’ condemnation is in line with intensified diplomatic efforts by India to generate global pressure on nations purportedly supporting cross-border terrorism. The powerful statement of the United Nations chief is regarded as an important move. It reaffirms India’s position that terror needs to be fought globally and without compromise.”

India has insisted that Pakistan-based forces were responsible for the attack, but Pakistan denied this. The Indian government pledged to take all steps necessary to bring out and isolate the perpetrators of the strike.

Increased Security and International Reaction

Following the attack, security has been increased in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in places visited by tourists. Investigations are ongoing to identify the logistical backup and planning involved. Indian officials indicate that preliminary reports point to the involvement of foreign militants trained for such purposes. Efforts are being made to identify the handlers.

While so, India has called upon the global powers and international institutions to take note of and act upon what it calls a trend of ‘state-sponsored terrorism.’ Guterres’ backing is likely to add strength to India’s campaigns at international platforms such as the United Nations Security Council and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

India and Zimbabwe have a long history of close and cordial relations. During the era of the Munhumutapa Kingdom, Indian merchants established strong links with Zimbabwe, trading in textiles, minerals, and metals, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). India supported Zimbabwe’s freedom struggle.

In August last year, Zimbabwe Vice President Constantino Guveya Dominic Nyikadzino Chiwenga arrived in New Delhi to attend the 19th CII India-Africa Business Conclave. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that Chiwenga’s participation in the conclave, held here in the national capital, highlights the strong ties between India and Zimbabwe.

The two sides discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in development partnerships, trade and economic relations, digital technology, agriculture, health, defence, consular and cultural issues, among others, according to MEA statement.

For the meeting, the Indian side was led by Puneet R Kundal, Additional Secretary (East and Southern Africa), Ministry of External Affairs, while the Zimbabwean side was led by Mike Chigiji, Chief Director (Political), Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, on Friday, while speaking at the 9th Carnegie Global Tech Summit, said that now is not the time to make any determination about DeepSeek.

When asked if the government was considering a possible ban on the Chinese AI platform DeepSeek, like the Chinese social media app TikTok, Jaishankar said he would choose to be evasive now.

“I will be deeply evasive about the answer. My honest answer is, I don’t think at this time there is any determination,” he said. Earlier, on February 25, the Delhi High Court refused to advance an urgent hearing on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking direction to block DeepSeek in India.

The bench, led by the Chief Justice of Delhi, observed that users have the option to refrain from using the Chinese AI platform if it poses a threat, stating that if it is harmful, they are not compelled to use it. There is no basis for requesting an urgent hearing, said the court.

The court was hearing an application moved by the petitioner. On February 12, the Court asked the counsel representing the Union government to seek instructions on the matter. It was listed again on February 20 but could not be taken up due to a lack of time, so the next date given was April 16.

Meanwhile, on February 5, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said that India will have its first foundational Artificial Intelligence model in about 10 months. The Minister said that the government is going to host an open-source model like the Chinese ‘DeepSeek’ on Indian servers.

This comes at a time when Chinese startups have challenged the AI world. The minister said one must look at the entire India AI mission in a more comprehensive manner. He said India approved the AI mission last year, with an allocation of about Rs 10,000 crore.

Jaishankar emphasized the need for a global order, criticized Pakistan’s role in fostering instability, and called out Western double standards in international politics and governance.
</excerpt>

On the second day of the Raisina Dialogue, India’s premier conference on geopolitics and geoeconomics, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar underscored the necessity of a robust global order while addressing security threats posed by “risky” nations, regardless of their size.

The Need for a Global Order

Speaking on the panel titled “Thrones and Thorns: Defending the Integrity of Nations,” Jaishankar stressed that an international order is as essential for global stability as a domestic order is for national governance. Highlighting the risks of disorder, he stated that even relatively small nations could exploit instability to their advantage.

In what appeared to be a pointed remark at Pakistan, Jaishankar remarked, “It’s not just big countries that benefit from disorder. Any country with extreme positions will try to use it to its advantage.” He further stated that being a “risky” nation does not depend on a country’s size, citing Pakistan’s continued sponsorship of terrorism despite its declining resources.

Pakistan’s Role and Kashmir Issue

Jaishankar also addressed historical inconsistencies in the global order, particularly referencing Pakistan’s aggression. He pointed out that after World War II, one of the longest-standing illegal occupations occurred in Kashmir. He criticized the United Nations for turning what was an invasion into a mere dispute, equating the aggressor with the victim.

He also named several Western nations, including the UK, Canada, Belgium, Australia, and the US, as complicit in this approach. “We speak today of political interference. When the West intervenes, it’s framed as democracy in danger. When others do the same, it’s labeled malign interference,” he said, calling for an audit of the world’s power structures.

Criticism of Double Standards in International Relations

Jaishankar also took aim at what he described as double standards in global governance. “The international order that emerged after World War II was a product of its time. The rule-makers and rule-takers had different perspectives. If it suits their interest, a group or nation is deemed acceptable or not,” he remarked.

He pointed out the contrasting treatment of Afghanistan under the Taliban, noting that “Taliban 1.0 was welcomed in Oslo, and a British general described them as ‘country boys with an honor code.’ But extremists in suits and ties are considered acceptable.”

Panel of Global Leaders

The panel discussion featured prominent figures, including:

Carl Bildt, Former Prime Minister of Sweden

Dominique Hasler, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Liechtenstein

Juraj Blanár, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Slovak Republic

Dubai Abulhoul, Founder of the Fiker Institute, UAE

Jaishankar’s remarks at the Raisina Dialogue reaffirmed India’s position on the need for a fair and consistent global order, while questioning the West’s selective approach in global politics.

Jaishankar is on a six-day UK-Ireland visit to advance trade talks, discuss global diplomacy, and expand India’s strategic ties.
</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar left for a six-day state visit to the United Kingdom and Ireland from 4 to 9 March, 2025. His mission is to give a push to diplomatic relations, speed up trade negotiations on the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), and hold talks on ongoing global geopolitical issues, including the Russia-Ukraine war.

Major Diplomatic Interactions in the UK

Jaishankar’s British visit comprises top-level talks with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy. The two leaders will discuss the India-UK FTA, an important pact aimed at deepening economic relations by cutting tariffs and boosting investment.

India and the UK have a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, including major areas like defence, security, healthcare, education, and trade. Jaishankar’s visit will further strengthen these relations. He will also open new Indian consulates in Belfast and Manchester, increasing India’s diplomatic footprint beyond London, Birmingham, and Edinburgh.

The other key highlight will be Jaishankar’s speech at Chatham House on March 5. The session, “India’s Rise and Role in the World,” is likely to present India’s response to global issues and its growing role in global affairs.

India’s Neutrality towards the Russia-Ukraine War

Jaishankar’s visit is timely when there are increased debates in Europe about the Russia-Ukraine war. Last week, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had a VIP summit with European leaders and called for a collective approach in halting the war.

New Delhi took a non-aligned stance against the war, staying neutral between taking sides of either bloc. India abstained while voting for two recent UN resolutions brought to the table by Ukraine and the US. It’s notable that India’s diplomatic language changed with it no longer saying “two parties to the conflict,” instead saying “parties concerned” with an implied inclusion now of the US, Russia, Ukraine, and Europe in this designation.

Although Jaishankar’s conversation with Lammy will likely cross into India’s role in international conflict resolution through diplomacy, India won’t lean firmly in one direction or another.

India-UK Free Trade Agreement Talks Continue

The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) India-UK is expected to feature prominently in discussions. Negotiations that started many years ago caught a new spurt of steam recently after British Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds visited New Delhi in February 2025.

The trade agreement, aiming to lower tariffs and boost investments in pharma, tech, and financial services, has stalled due to disagreements over market access and tariff reductions. This visit by Jaishankar, however, promises more attempts at closing the deal, one that could significantly help offset both economies.

Ireland Visit of Jaishankar: Fostering Bilateral Relations

After his interactions in the UK, Jaishankar will visit Ireland between March 6 and 7. He will have a meeting with Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris and other high-ranking officials to exchange views on diplomatic and economic ties.

One of the main results of this visit is anticipated to be the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on a diplomat exchange program. Also, India and Ireland will create the India-Ireland Joint Economic Commission, deepening economic cooperation.

This visit marks the highest-level diplomatic interaction between India and Ireland since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Dublin in 2015. It underscores India’s intent to enhance ties with smaller European nations beyond its core partnerships with the UK, France, and Germany.

India’s Global Balancing Act

Jaishankar’s visit arrives during changing geopolitical trends. With India emerging as a major player in the global scenario, it is dealing with complicated international nuances including its alliances with the US, Europe, Russia, and Ukraine.

India has always been promoting diplomacy over militancy. PM Modi recently also expressed this at the time of talks with the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, stressing there must be a “just and lasting peace” based on territorial integrity and international law.

At the same time, European leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron and British officials are negotiating possible ceasefire plans in Ukraine. Nevertheless, differences still exist, with Kyiv voicing security issues before approving any truce.

</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday responded to concerns over the allegations that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) spent $21 million to sway voter turnout in India. He termed the allegation “concerning and worrisome” and acknowledged that the government is looking into the issue.

Jaishankar: ‘Govt Looking Into It’

Retaliating against allegations raised by representatives of former US President Donald Trump’s administration, Jaishankar reiterated that USAID could conduct business in India in good faith. “Some information has been put out there by the Trump administration people, and obviously, that is concerning… I think, as a government, we’re looking into it. My sense is that the facts will come out…,” he told an event in New Delhi.

“USAID was allowed here in good faith, to do good faith activities; now, suggestions are being laid out from America that there are activities which are in bad faith. It’s worrisome, and if there’s something to it, then the country should know who the people are involved in it,” he added.

Trump Accuses Biden Administration of Funding Indian Elections

The row broke out after Trump’s close friend Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) tweeted on X that USAID had released $21 million “for voter turnout in India.” The tweet also added that the funding had been canceled. Trump repeated the assertion at a ‘Governors Working Session’ in Washington on Friday, stating, “Twenty-one million dollars going to my friend Prime Minister Modi in India for voter turnout. We’re giving 21 million for voter turnout in India. What about us? I want voter turnout too.”

The Biden government has not publicly reacted to the allegations by Trump. But the allegation has drawn a political row in India with opposition leaders asking for transparency.

Congress, BJP Clash Over Allegations

India’s main opposition party, Congress, criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, urging a strong response to the allegations. “The white paper should not only focus on USAID funding, but all such agencies which fund both governments, individuals and all other entities under Indian law,” said Congress’ media and publicity head Pawan Khera.

Reacting to this, BJP leader Ajay Alok rejected Congress’ stand, claiming that foreign funding was more widespread during the Congress-led UPA government. “We have already shown that the government got USD 2119 million between 2004-14 and just 1.5 million between 2014-25. We are shutting down these things. The Indian government is now acting, the US government has issued a list of who has got the money from where… This is part of a deep state. The Bharat Jodo Yatra was also being funded from this money,” alleged Alok.

MEA: ‘Deeply Troubling Reports’

On Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the controversy, referring to the reports as “deeply troubling.” MEA official Randhir Jaiswal said that the government is thoroughly probing the issue.

“We have seen information that has been put out by the US administration regarding certain USA activities and funding. These are obviously very deeply troubling. This has led to concerns about foreign interference in India’s internal affairs. Relevant departments and agencies are looking into this matter. It would be premature to make a public comment at this stage, so relevant authorities are looking into it, and hopefully we can come up with an update on that subsequently,” explained Jaiswal.

Government Awaits Further Clarity

While the Indian government probes the case, USAID and the Biden administration remain tight-lipped. The controversy has placed a new twist in India-US relations with concerns over foreign interference in internal elections.

Jaishankar addressed concerns over the deportation of Indian immigrants by the US, stressing the importance of legal immigration and ensuring no mistreatment of deportees.
</excerpt>

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar responded to the mounting furor over the deportation of Indian nationals by the United States on February 6. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, the minister stressed that legal immigration should always be promoted and reiterated that it is part of the government’s job to bring back citizens who are found to be living abroad without proper documentation.

“All countries must take back their nationals if they are found to be living illegally abroad,” Jaishankar said, emphasizing India’s commitment to addressing illegal immigration cases.

Speaking in Rajya Sabha on Indian citizens deported from the US, EAM S Jaishankar says, “…It is the obligation of all countries to take back their nationals if they are found to be living illegally abroad…” pic.twitter.com/6tnkvqbuQJ

— ANI (@ANI) February 6, 2025

Deportation Process and Concerns Over Restraints

Jaishankar has addressed some of the issues raised over the treatment meted out to deportees, particularly regarding restraint during deportation. He said that deportees, in general, were handcuffed while traveling from here, as per the SOP followed by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement authority. However, he clarified that the SOP in place since 2012 does not result in the restraint of women and children.

“The deportation by the US are organized and executed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE) authority. The SOP of deportation by aircraft used by ICE which is effective from 2012 provides for the use of restraint. We have been informed by ICE that women and children are not restrained,” Jaishankar explained.

The minister assured that the Indian government would get in touch with US authorities to ensure the safe return of deportees with their dignity intact while traveling back to India. “…We are engaging the US government to ensure the returning deportees are not mistreated in any manner.”

Political Storm in India Over US Deportations

Jaishankar’s comments are coming at a time when a political storm is brewing in India over the deportation of more than 100 Indian nationals from the US. On February 5, a US military flight carrying 104 illegal immigrants landed in Amritsar, India. Reports soon emerged claiming that some deportees had been handcuffed and shackled throughout the journey. That led to widespread outrage among Indian political parties.

A deportee, speaking on the subject for news agency PTI, commented, “We thought we were being taken to another camp. Then a police officer told us that we were being taken to India. We were handcuffed, and our legs were chained. These were opened at Amritsar airport.”

These claims triggered strong opposition protests in both houses of the Indian Parliament. Opposition lawmakers demanded a statement from the government, accusing US authorities of treating Indian deportees inhumanely. The disruption in Parliament followed heated discussions on the matter.

Clarification on Viral Image of Cuffed Deportees

As the controversy grew, the Indian government clarified a viral photo circulating on social media that allegedly showed Indian immigrants being handcuffed during deportation. Authorities said that the picture was not of the deportation of Indian nationals but rather of Guatemalan nationals. They added that no such mistreatment happened during the deportation of Indians.

India’s Response and Diplomatic Efforts

Jaishankar also clarified that the Indian government is engaging actively with the US to ensure that the rights of Indian nationals are protected, thereby responding to political backlash. He further reiterated that the government is committed to encouraging legal immigration while ensuring the protection of its citizens abroad.

The US deportations issue has become a political storm in the midst of which there is a continuous concern over immigration policies and the treatment of migrants. The situation remains closely monitored by officials and lawmakers as both Indian and US governments are engaged in discussions.

</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday, lauded the contributions of the Indian diaspora and stated that they have left an “indelible mark” on the global society.

Addressing at the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards Ceremony on Friday, Jaishankar stated that the people of Indian origin are holding political offices and leading organisations, the EAM said that their “extraordinary achievements” have made Indians proud and have bolstered India’s ties with other countries.

“The Indian diaspora has made outstanding contributions to both India and the world in diverse domains based on your immense talent, creativity, dedication, commitment and perseverance. From holding political offices and leading organizations to excelling in various domains and walks of life. They have left an indelible mark on global society,” Jaishankar said.

“Their extraordinary achievements have made India and Indians proud and have strengthened our relationship with other peoples and nations. When the world thinks of India, its particular image or relationship is what is shaping our collective brand,” he added.

The Foreign Minister affirmed confidence that the awardees would continue to serve as effective bridges between India and the rest of the world.

“The Pravasya Bharatiya Saman awards that would be conferred by the President of India Droupadi Murmu on select members of the Indian diaspora are a recognition of their achievements. At the same time, they are also a statement of the value that India attaches to its diaspora. I felicitate the Pravasi Bharatiya Samana awardees and I am confident that they will continue to be an effective bridge to the world,” he said.

Stating that the current era is that of greater interdependence, technology flows and talent mobility, Jaishankar discussed the dual perspectives of “India first” and “Vasudeva Kutumbakam”

“We approach the world with the twin perspectives of India first and Vasudeva Kutumbaka. When India progresses, so does one-sixth of humanity. When we do global good, our own people stand equally to gain. This is now an era of greater interdependence, technology flows and talent mobility. In many ways, it is the diaspora that will help define our image as a resurgent civilization,” he said.

“The PBD serves as a catalytic platform. It is a matter of great satisfaction that we have had productive and wide-ranging conversations in the last few days. My gratitude to President Droupadi Murmu for gracing the occasion as it culminates,” the EAM added.

Jaishankar further acknowledged the efforts by the Ministry of External Affairs in organizing the PBD convention for two decades, which has strengthened international relationships.

“For two decades now, the Ministry of External Affairs has been organizing the PBD convention across the country. Wherever we have gone, wherever we have met, it has helped to raise the international profile of the state and strengthen its diaspora bonding,” Jaishankar said in his closing remarks.

Earlier, after the arrival of President Droupadi Murmu, EAM Jaishawkar stated, “Ho wnoured to receive President Droupadi Murmu today at the #PravasiBharatiyaDivas2025 Convention in Odisha.”

The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention is the flagship event of the Government of India that provides an important platform to connect and engage with the Indian diaspora and enable them to interact with each other.
The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention is being organized in partnership with the State Government of Odisha from January 8 to 10 in Bhubaneswar.

The theme of this PBD Convention is “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat”. A large number of Indian diaspora members from over 50 different countries have registered to participate in the PBD Convention.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha during Question Hour, Mr. Jaishankar addressed claims that India abstained from all United Nations resolutions on Gaza. He clarified that since the Israel-Hamas conflict erupted on October 7, 2023, 13 resolutions related to Palestine were tabled at the UN General Assembly (UNGA). Of these, India voted in favor of 10 and abstained from 3.

Highlighting India’s humanitarian contributions, Mr. Jaishankar noted that approximately 70 metric tonnes of aid, including 16.5 metric tonnes of medical supplies, were delivered to Palestine in two tranches. Additionally, $5 million was provided to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) in 2024, mirroring a similar contribution in 2023. Recent shipments in October and November 2024 included 65 tonnes of medical supplies dispatched to UNRWA and the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

“India’s policy towards Palestine has been long-standing, and we have always supported a negotiated two-State solution, towards the establishment of a sovereign, independent and viable State of Palestine within secure and recognized borders, living side by side in peace with Israel,” Mr. Jaishankar stated.

India has actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to promote peace, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mr. Jaishankar holding discussions with regional and global leaders, including Israeli and Palestinian officials. On September 22, PM Modi met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the Summit of the Future in New York, advocating for a ceasefire, hostages’ release, and renewed peace talks. </excerpt>

The Indian government has taken a cautious approach to Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), prioritizing the protection of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and farmers, according to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Explaining this measured stance, he stated, “Modi govt has been very cautious on FTA for two reasons. Number one, weighing the experiences and the results of previous and number two, our concern for the impact of FTAs on MSMEs.”

Jaishankar underscored the importance of safeguarding domestic interests during trade negotiations. “We have been pressing very strongly for a review of the ASEAN India trading goods, agreement, because we have concerns about the impact of that FTA on the development of manufacturing in it, and we feel that FTA should not become, in a way, damaging to the Indian economy,” he explained.

Commenting on the ongoing FTA discussions with the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK), Jaishankar highlighted the complexity involved. “When it comes to EU and UK, I think it’s complex, because there are many non-trade issues also, so those also have to be negotiated so and in the case of EU, because there are multiple members, everybody has their interest. Overall we benefit we believe that these will benefit us,” he remarked.

On the disruption of shipping routes in the Red Sea, Jaishankar expressed India’s concern and detailed its proactive response. “It is a big concern for us. We have deployed several Navy ships in the region to mitigate the impact. The disruption has had a significant economic consequence for India,” he noted.

He further emphasized India’s economic interests in West Asia and the Middle East, stressing the importance of regional stability. “It is a big concern for us, we have tried to do our share. We actually deployed some Navy ships as well, quite a few Navy ships there. It has disrupted logistics,” he said.

Discussing diplomatic efforts to address the issue, Jaishankar added, “So we have actually been in touch with all the major players, including Iran and Israel. We want a cooling down. We want a cease fire. And we want negotiation so that actually our economic interests are not written.”

The partnership was upgraded to a Strategic Partnership in 2008, marking the increasing political and economic engagement.

Deepening Cooperation Across Sectors

The India-Oman relationship has changed with time, moving beyond the traditional realm of diplomacy to the emerging sectors of space, cybersecurity, and rare earth minerals. Oman has played a significant role in India’s West Asia policy since it is one of the oldest and most trusted regional partners of India. The exchanges at this level were complemented by the Indian leadership’s visits: Prime Minister Narendra Modi to India in 2018 and the visit of the National Security Adviser of India Ajit Doval in June 2023.

Oman’s Involvement in India’s G20 Presidency

As a gesture of goodwill and strategic cooperation, Oman was invited as a guest country during India’s G20 Presidency in 2023. The invitation reflects the strength of the partnership and mutual interest of both nations in promoting collaborative growth.

Indian Community in Oman

The vibrant Indian expatriate community in Oman, with about 684,771 members, plays a very important role in nurturing bilateral relations. This community of professionals, entrepreneurs, and families has been instrumental in fostering strong people-to-people connections. Many of them have deep roots in Oman, with some families having lived in the country for over 150 years.

This apart, the country has 21 Indian schools and more than 40,000 students as well as a number of religious and cultural institutions such as temples, churches, and gurudwaras. The institutions help preserve Indian culture as well as promote social welfare.

The Future of India-Oman Relations

The India-Oman relation, based on shared values and an enduring sense of cooperation, remains strong and thriving in many areas. The growing scope in all these areas, like technology, space, and investments, reflects the increasing possibility of the future. Both the nations intend to further strengthen their bilateral ties and engage in novel areas of cooperation, so their partnership stands as an important pillar for India’s West Asia policy.

India and Oman share a relationship of mutual respect and have long historical ties, henceforth sharing a common vision. Both countries are well-equipped in strengthening their collaboration with stronger people-to-people connections as well as expanding opportunities within emerging sectors.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the need for addressing trade imbalances, improving trade settlements in local currencies, and enhancing connectivity through key corridors like the INSTC and Chennai-Vladivostok route.
</excerpt>

India and Russia’s bilateral trade, currently valued at $66 billion, is on track to hit $100 billion by 2030, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said during his address at the India-Russia Business Forum in Mumbai on Monday. The target, set during a leaders’ summit in July, is seen as achievable with concerted efforts from both nations.

Jaishankar acknowledged the imbalance in trade, stressing the need for quick action on non-tariff barriers and regulatory challenges to achieve a more balanced trade relationship. He emphasized the complementary nature of India and Russia’s economies, noting India’s strong growth prospects and Russia’s vast natural resources and technological expertise.

Pleased to deliver the keynote address at the India-Russia Business Forum held today.

A key focus of Jaishankar’s speech was the importance of settling trade transactions in local currencies. In light of current global conditions, he highlighted the use of Special Rupee Vostro Accounts as an effective solution and stressed that national currency settlements would help improve the trade balance in the short term.

Jaishankar also discussed the need to strengthen logistical connections between the two countries, pointing to three critical infrastructure projects: the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), the Chennai-Vladivostok Maritime Corridor, and the Northern Maritime Route. These connectivity initiatives are essential to unlocking the full potential of trade between India and Russia.

During the forum, Jaishankar noted that Russia has increasingly embraced India’s “Make In India” initiative, which he believes will further boost business and cooperation. He also emphasized that India, as a major player in global energy markets, could help Russia navigate volatility and uncertainty in sectors like oil, gas, and coal.

Resuming Patrols Along the LAC

India and China plan to restart patrols along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh by the end of this month. This will be the first patrol since tensions rose after the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.

Dismantling Structures

Both sides are actively dismantling prefabricated sheds, tents, and other temporary setups used to support equipment, vehicles, and troops. This phase of the disengagement aims to remove all such structures in the contested regions.

Cross-Verification Process

Cross-verification of the dismantling should finish by October 29. This verification is essential for both countries to officially declare the disengagement complete.

Agreement for Two Friction Points

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced on October 27 that India and China had reached an agreement to restore the pre-2020 arrangement in Demchok and Depsang. Talks are still ongoing for other contested areas along the border.

</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has criticized Canada for its “double standards” as tensions between New Delhi and Ottawa escalate following allegations surrounding the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada last year. Jaishankar’s comments come on the heels of New Delhi’s recent decision to expel Canadian diplomats in response to accusations linking India to Nijjar’s death.

Diplomatic Tensions Escalate

In a statement made on Monday, Jaishankar described Canada’s actions as exhibiting “double standards,” a term he deemed a “very mild word” for the situation. His remarks were prompted by the ongoing diplomatic fallout after Canada expelled Indian diplomats and raised new allegations against the Indian government regarding Nijjar’s killing in British Columbia.

Last week, India expelled Canadian Charge d’Affaires Stewart Wheeler and five other diplomats, further intensifying the diplomatic crisis. India also recalled its high commissioner and five additional diplomats in response to Canada’s claims. The diplomatic spat marks a significant deterioration in relations between the two countries, which had already been strained following Nijjar’s killing.

Historical Context of Khalistani Issues

The current crisis is not an isolated incident; it reflects a long-standing tension between India and Canada over the Khalistani movement. Notably, the issue dates back to 1982, when then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi voiced her concerns to Pierre Trudeau, Justin Trudeau’s father, regarding Canada’s inadequate response to the Khalistani challenge.

That year, Surjan Singh Gill, a Khalistani sympathizer, set up the ‘Khalistan government in exile’ office in Vancouver, issuing blue Khalistani passports and currency, although these efforts received limited local support. At the time, Pierre Trudeau declined India’s request to extradite a suspect involved in the killing of two police officers in Punjab.

Jaishankar Critiques Canada’s Response

Jaishankar pointed out the contradictions in Canada’s stance, saying, “If you threaten the Indian high commissioner, he is supposed to accept it as freedom of speech, but if an Indian journalist comments on the Canadian high commissioner’s demeanor, it is labeled as foreign interference.”

He further criticized the Canadian government for its handling of threats against Indian airlines and diplomats. “They call this freedom of speech. But my question to them is: if you received these threats, would you take them lightly?” Jaishankar remarked.

A Call for Defined Solutions

Despite the ongoing tensions, Jaishankar expressed a desire to maintain people-to-people relations between India and Canada. He stressed the need to clearly define the challenges posed by a segment of Canadian politics that supports Khalistani sentiments. “We need to narrow this down and define this problem for what it is,” he concluded.

The diplomatic situation continues to evolve, with both nations facing pressure to address the underlying issues while navigating their complex relationship.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Islamabad, delivered a sharp rebuke to Pakistan over its involvement in cross-border terrorism. He emphasized that Pakistan needs to reflect on why the relationship between the two countries has deteriorated.

Speaking at the SCO Council of Heads of Government (CHG) summit, Jaishankar stated, “If trust is lacking or cooperation inadequate, if the friendship has fallen short and good neighbourliness is missing somewhere, there are surely reasons to introspect and causes to address.” Though he did not directly name Pakistan, his comments clearly alluded to the country’s role in fostering terrorism and extremism across borders, adding that such activities hinder trade, connectivity, and positive exchanges between nations. He remarked, “If activities across borders are characterized by terrorism, extremism and separatism, they are hardly likely to encourage trade, energy flows, connectivity and people-to-people exchanges in parallel.”

India’s Active Role in the Summit

Jaishankar highlighted India’s constructive participation at the summit, mentioning that the country contributed positively to the discussions and signed eight outcome documents. He also extended India’s best wishes to Russia, which will take over the presidency of the SCO in the coming year under its rotational mechanism.

“India extends its best wishes to Russia as it takes over the SCO CHG Presidency,” Jaishankar said.

In a social media post, Jaishankar outlined the key outcomes of the summit, which included:

Developing a dialogue on the concept of “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”

SCO members welcomed India’s initiatives like the SCO Startup Forum and programs on traditional medicine.

Digital Public Infrastructure and Digital Inclusion were added to the SCO cooperation framework.

The summit took inspiration from India’s Mission LiFE to support the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).

Efforts to enhance global food security by promoting climate-resilient grains like millets.

Reinforcing a rules-based, non-discriminatory, open, fair, and transparent multilateral trading system, with the WTO at its core.

Strained Relations Between India and Pakistan

India-Pakistan relations have been under significant strain since February 2019, when Indian airstrikes targeted a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist training camp in Balakot, Pakistan, following the Pulwama terror attack. Tensions escalated further in August 2019, when India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and split the state into two union territories.

In response, Pakistan downgraded its diplomatic ties with India. While India has maintained that it seeks peaceful and normal relations with Pakistan, it insists that Pakistan must take concrete steps to eliminate terrorism and reduce hostilities for any meaningful dialogue to take place.

Brief Interaction with Pakistan’s Prime Minister

A day before Jaishankar’s speech, he briefly exchanged pleasantries with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at a dinner reception hosted by Sharif for the SCO delegates. Jaishankar and Sharif shared a brief handshake and a few words during the event, where Sharif greeted all the heads of the delegations from SCO member nations.

This marked the first visit by an Indian foreign minister to Pakistan in almost nine years, even as tensions over issues like Kashmir and cross-border terrorism persisted. Despite the challenges, India reaffirmed its active participation in the SCO, which Pakistan hosted on October 15 and 16.

India denies involvement, escalating diplomatic tensions. Both nations have expelled diplomats, intensifying the ongoing dispute over these unproven allegations.
</excerpt>

An old video of S Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, has gone viral recently where he states responded to India Canada relations by stating that the “Newton’s law of politics” would apply, indicating that any actions would be met with equal reactions. “If there are things that happen out there, there will be pushback. Others will take steps or counter it,” Jaishankar remarked, signaling India’s intent to respond to the accusations.

Tensions between Canada and India have escalated as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of legitimizing “extremism, separatism, and advocates of violence” under the guise of free speech. Trudeau’s remarks came as Canada leveled new accusations against the Indian government, claiming its direct involvement in criminal activities on Canadian soil, although no public evidence was provided to support these allegations.

The diplomatic rift deepened after the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) linked Indian government agents to organized crime in Canada, specifically the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The RCMP tied these allegations to their ongoing investigation into the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent pro-Khalistan figure killed in Canada last year. Nijjar’s death had previously triggered diplomatic tension, with India strongly denying involvement and accusing Canada of protecting separatist extremists.

According to the RCMP, Indian agents have been collaborating with the Bishnoi gang to target pro-Khalistan activists in Canada. In response, India recalled its top diplomat from Canada and expelled six Canadian diplomats. Ottawa had earlier designated several Indian officials, including the High Commissioner, as “persons of interest” in Nijjar’s murder case.

Diplomatic relations between the two nations continue to deteriorate as both sides stand firm on their respective positions.

His witty remark drew laughter from both the interviewer and the audience, and the moment quickly gained traction on social media.

George Soros, known for his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is frequently accused by the BJP of supporting anti-India movements and seeking regime changes to promote Western interests. On the other hand, Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s authoritarian leader, presents a different set of diplomatic complexities.

Jaishankar’s sharp reply allowed him to avoid being caught in the controversies surrounding either figure.

This isn’t the first time the seasoned diplomat has made headlines with his sharp wit. At a recent event, he was asked by a foreign journalist whether the US is a declining power, to which he responded, “You don’t have to convince me about that.” This clever comment quickly went viral.

Jaishankar’s skill in addressing delicate issues with humor was also evident when he was questioned about his behavior during an upcoming visit to Pakistan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. With his usual wit, he replied, “I’m a courteous and civil person, I will behave myself accordingly,” earning applause from the audience.

</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered a compelling speech during the 2nd G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting under Brazil’s G20 Presidency, held on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). His remarks addressed three major global issues—reform of the United Nations, the international financial architecture, and the multilateral trading system. Each of these areas is crucial in responding to current geopolitical realities and supporting the interests of developing nations, particularly the Global South.

Reforming the United Nations and Global Governance
Jaishankar began by stressing the urgent need for reforming the United Nations (UN), labeling it a “prisoner of the past.” He emphasized that the current structure, particularly the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), no longer reflects today’s geopolitical landscape. Since its inception in 1945, the number of UN members has grown fourfold, yet the UNSC has remained unchanged. As Jaishankar pointed out, the UNSC is increasingly unable to effectively fulfill its mandate of maintaining global peace and stability, thereby undermining its credibility.

He reiterated India’s long-standing demand for expanding both categories of UNSC membership to include underrepresented regions, especially Asia, Africa, and Latin America. According to Jaishankar, giving these regions a legitimate voice is essential for ensuring equitable global governance. Reforming the UNSC is not merely a political issue but an imperative for maintaining the council’s effectiveness in a multipolar world. Brazil, alongside other nations of the Global South, echoed similar sentiments, pushing for a more inclusive and reformed UN that would better reflect current global power dynamics.

Reforming the International Financial Architecture
Shifting focus to global financial structures, Jaishankar called for a reformed international financial system that can meet the urgent development challenges of the modern world, including addressing climate change. He argued that the Bretton Woods institutions, including the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), are outdated and ill-equipped to tackle today’s multifaceted challenges.

One of the most pressing concerns he highlighted was the financial gap for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is estimated to be around USD 4 trillion annually. He called for strengthening Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), advocating that they refine their vision and operational models to maximize development impacts. Significant steps were taken during India’s G20 presidency, and Jaishankar urged Brazil to continue this momentum. The reforms aim to scale development and climate finance from billions to trillions, making MDBs more expansive and effective in addressing global challenges.

Jaishankar’s emphasis on reforming financial institutions resonates with growing global demands for a fairer system that better supports developing countries. As these nations face escalating climate risks, they require greater access to finance for adaptation and mitigation. Brazil’s G20 Presidency has been aligned with this objective, continuing the work set during India’s leadership.

Multilateral Trading System and WTO Reforms
In his third key point, Jaishankar advocated for reforming the multilateral trading system, calling for a rules-based, non-discriminatory, and inclusive framework. He expressed India’s unwavering commitment to a transparent and equitable trading system, with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core.

Jaishankar criticized market-distorting practices and protectionism, advocating for a level playing field in international trade. He called for comprehensive reforms of the WTO to ensure it becomes more functional and accessible, with a fully operational and effective dispute settlement mechanism. According to Jaishankar, these reforms are vital for creating a more inclusive global trading system that enables every nation to flourish.

Given the current landscape, where global trade faces rising protectionism, such reforms are seen as critical for preventing trade imbalances. Brazil, along with many other Global South nations, shares India’s call for a reformed multilateral trading system, particularly to counteract the dominance of more developed economies in global trade discussions.

The Broader Global South Perspective
Jaishankar’s speech highlights a broader consensus emerging within the Global South, calling for more inclusive global governance. Brazil, which assumed the G20 Presidency from India, also strongly supports reforms aimed at amplifying the voices of developing nations in international institutions. During the meeting, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira pointed out that institutions like the UN have failed to resolve major global conflicts, and without reforms, they risk losing credibility. Vieira’s stance reflects the frustrations of many Global South nations that feel marginalized in global decision-making processes, a point further amplified by China and South Africa.

As the world faces rising geopolitical tensions, from the Russia-Ukraine conflict to escalating concerns in the Middle East, the G20 offers a rare platform for dialogue between the Global North and South. However, bridging the divide between these regions remains a challenge, as evidenced by the difficulty in reaching consensus on issues like global governance reform. Nonetheless, the growing chorus of calls for change from the Global South is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Jaishankar shared on Friday that his father was aboard a hijacked flight in 1984, offering a rare perspective from both sides of such crises—family members and government officials. Speaking during a community event in Geneva about the new television series on the 1999 IC-814 hijacking, Jaishankar recounted his own experience.

As a young officer at the time, Jaishankar was involved in managing the hijack crisis while simultaneously being among the families pressing the government for action. He described how he initially called his mother to explain he couldn’t come home due to the hijacking situation, only to later learn that his father was on the flight.

The 1984 hijacking involved an Indian Airlines flight from Pathankot, which was diverted to Dubai. After over 36 hours, the 12 pro-Khalistani hijackers surrendered, and all 68 passengers and six crew members were released unharmed.

Jaishankar reflected on his dual role during the crisis: “It was interesting because on the one hand, I was part of the team working on the hijacking. On the other hand, I was part of the family members pressing the government for the hijacking.” He humorously noted, “So, often these are situations and movie guys don’t make the governments look good. The hero is supposed to look good. Then nobody would watch the movie and you got to accept that,” which drew laughter from the audience.
