Jaishankar affirms that Operation Sindoor remains active, sending a clear message to terrorists in Pakistan that India will respond decisively to any future terror attacks while maintaining an agreed ceasefire with Pakistan.
</excerpt>

India’s external affairs minister, S. Jaishankar, has assured that Operation Sindoor is in full swing as an assertive warning to terrorists based in Pakistan. The operation, initiated on May 7 against the brutal April 22 terror strike at Pahalgam that murdered 26 civilians, focuses on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistani-occupied regions. Jaishankar emphasized that India will act firmly if another similar attack occurs again, reaffirming India’s new offensive strategy towards cross-border terrorism.

In an interview with Dutch broadcaster NOS, Jaishankar reiterates that the May 10 agreement to suspend military operations was a bilaterally agreed-upon understanding after Indian strikes made the Pakistani military settle for a ceasefire. Interestingly, he ruled out any role played by the United States in facilitating this understanding or in future negotiations with Pakistan, making India’s position clear on direct bilateral talks.

Operation Sindoor: A Message Beyond Ceasefire

India’s precision strikes as part of Operation Sindoor targeted nine terror locations selected by the United Nations. The strikes were directed at destroying terror infrastructure that conducted the Pahalgam massacre on behalf of Pakistan-based LeT proxy, The Resistance Front. Jaishankar emphasized, “The operation continues because there is a clear message in that operation – that if there are acts of the kind we saw on April 22, there will be a response, that we will hit the terrorists.”

If the terrorists are in Pakistan, we will hit them where they are. So, there is a message in continuing the operation but continuing the operation is not the same as firing on each other. Right now, there is an agreed cessation of fighting and military action,” he added.

While the operation continues, Jaishankar explained that to continue the operation does not necessarily imply continuous firing from the army. Rather, there is an abiding agreement of cessation from active combat. In response to whether the operation was in cold storage, he replied, “Put whatever word you want to, but I can tell you the message is clear and the message is act.”

Strong action by the Indian government was required following the savage terror attack that introduced elements of religion deliberately to cause unrest. Jaishankar commented, “The combat was initiated by a very savage terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 were killed before their families, after ascertaining their religion.” He continued, “Deliberately, there was an element of religion brought in. On the Pakistani side, you have a Pakistani leadership, driven by a far-right religious orientation.”

Bilateral Settlement and India’s Sovereign Status

The ferocity of the confrontation between India and Pakistan continued for four days, with drones, missiles, and long-range artillery. On May 10, however, the turning point, India struck eight Pakistani airbases, making them non-operational by targeting the runways and command structures. This firm retaliation forced the Pakistani army to accede to the demand to stop firing. Jaishankar stated, “Now what has happened is that, at the moment, there is no firing and there’s been some repositioning of forces accordingly.”

Despite international appeals to cool down, Jaishankar reiterated that India managed things bilaterally without any external agency. He averred, “We made one thing very clear to everybody who spoke to us. If the Pakistanis want to stop fighting, they need to tell us. We need to hear it from them. Their general has to call up our general and say this. And that is what happened.”

Furthermore, India strictly confines its conversation with Pakistan to halting terrorism and securing the return of illegally occupied Kashmir regions. Jaishankar strongly declared, “The borders in Kashmir are not on the table because Kashmir belongs to India.”

Security and Economic Prosperity: Two Sides of the Same Coin

Jaishankar also addressed concerns that border tensions hinder India’s economic development. He stated, “Our security issues were much more threatening than yours [Europe’s], so we had to prioritize security. You don’t prioritize between security and economic growth. Today, you are realizing that they are from the same coin.”

India’s policy also indicates that ensuring national security is a necessary condition for economic growth and stability that can endure. The government’s response also conveys that it will not accept acts that endanger its citizens or sovereignty.

Jaishankar will travel to the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany from May 19 to 24, according to a statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Sunday.

Key Meetings and Agenda

During the six-day visit, Jaishankar will hold meetings with the top leadership of each of the three countries. The discussions will focus on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring cooperation on various global and regional issues of mutual concern.

Strategic Visit to Germany

Jaishankar’s visit to Germany comes shortly after Friedrich Merz became the new Federal Chancellor earlier this month. Following Merz’s appointment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated him and expressed hope for closer cooperation. PM Modi wrote on X, “Heartiest congratulations to @_FriedrichMerz on assuming office as the Federal Chancellor of Germany. I look forward to working together to further cement the India-Germany Strategic Partnership.”

Support After Pahalgam Attack

The Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany recently showed strong support for India following the terror attack in Pahalgam. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen condemned the attack and offered condolences. Her office posted on X, “Terrible news from Pahalgam. Denmark stands with India and strongly condemns all acts of terrorism. Our condolences to the victims of the attack and their families and loved ones.”

Former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also condemned the attack on tourists. He extended sympathy to the victims and wished a quick recovery for the injured. Dutch President Dick Schoof added, “The Netherlands stands shoulder to shoulder with India in the fight against terrorism, now and in the future.”

Strong and Growing Ties

India maintains close and friendly relations with all three countries. The MEA stated that India’s ties with Denmark are built on shared democratic values, historical connections, and a joint commitment to peace and stability. The “Green Strategic Partnership” has guided the recent progress in their relationship.

India’s relationship with the Netherlands has spanned more than 75 years. The two countries enjoy strong political, economic, and commercial cooperation. High-level visits have helped boost their wide-ranging partnership.

India and Germany share a strategic partnership that began over seventy years ago, soon after World War II. Jaishankar congratulated Beate Meinl-Reisinger on her appointment as Austria’s Foreign Minister, expressing confidence in deepening Indo-Austrian relations.
</excerpt>

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar extended his congratulations to Beate Meinl-Reisinger on her appointment as Austria’s new Foreign Minister. He emphasized strengthening the long-standing partnership between India and Austria.

In a post on X, Jaishankar wrote, “Congratulations to @BMeinl on her appointment as the Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of Austria. We will work together to further advance our long-standing partnership.”

India-Austria Diplomatic Ties

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India and Austria established diplomatic relations in 1949. Over the years, the partnership has expanded across trade, technology, and cultural exchanges.

Notably, in July 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid an official visit to Austria at the invitation of Chancellor Karl Nehammer. During his visit, PM Modi met Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and held bilateral talks with Chancellor Nehammer. This visit was significant as it marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations and was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Austria in 41 years.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

India and Austria continue to collaborate in various sectors, including health and technology. Ayurveda and Yoga have gained immense popularity in Austria, with many institutions offering traditional Indian wellness practices.

Another major development during PM Modi’s visit was the Migration and Mobility Agreement, which aims to facilitate the movement of skilled professionals while addressing irregular migration. This agreement supports high-tech collaboration and strengthens workforce mobility between the two countries.

The growing partnership between India and Austria reflects a commitment to deeper diplomatic, economic, and cultural cooperation.

Jaishankar called reports of USAID’s election-related funding “concerning,” stressing the need for transparency amid allegations of foreign interference. The government is investigating the claims for potential bad-faith activities.
</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Saturday raised concerns regarding the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) involvement in election-related funding in India. Speaking at the Delhi University Literature Festival, he emphasized the need to scrutinize potential “bad faith activities” linked to such funding.

Jaishankar’s remarks came in response to revelations from the U.S. leadership about the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) canceling hundreds of millions of dollars in USAID allocations worldwide. Among the cancellations was a reported $21 million meant for “voter turnout in India.”

Scrutiny Over USAID’s Role in India

Expressing concern over the funding’s implications, Jaishankar stated, “Some information has been put out by the Trump administration, and obviously, that is concerning. It suggests there may have been efforts to push a particular narrative or viewpoint.”

He further pointed out that USAID was permitted to operate in India in “good faith,” and any indication of “bad faith” activities warranted further investigation. “If there is merit in these claims, the country deserves to know who was involved,” he added.

The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that the government is actively investigating the issue, citing the need to prevent foreign interference in India’s internal affairs.

Political Controversy Escalates

The revelation has sparked a political debate, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress exchanging allegations over foreign influence in India’s electoral processes.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly referenced the reported funding in public statements. Addressing a gathering of U.S. state governors at the White House, he questioned why $21 million was allocated to India for voter turnout. “We’re giving $21 million for voter turnout in India. What about us? I want voter turnout too,” Trump remarked.

The U.S. administration has not provided concrete details regarding the alleged misallocation, though Trump has hinted at potential financial irregularities.

Expanding Security Measures in the Digital Age

Discussing the broader implications of such foreign funding, Jaishankar underscored the need to rethink security in the digital era. He highlighted that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and global ranking agencies could be used to influence public opinion and shape narratives.

Jaishankar also pointed to the presence of a so-called “globalization mafia”—a group of unelected influencers shaping global norms and economic policies over the past three decades. He emphasized the importance of India safeguarding its sovereignty against such external influences.

Modi-Trump Meeting and India-U.S. Relations

On a related note, Jaishankar described Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the U.S. and his first meeting with Trump in his second term as a success. He noted that both leaders share a strong nationalist perspective, which fosters mutual respect.

“Prime Minister Modi is a strong nationalist, and Trump, as an American nationalist, respects that. Their meeting went very well for several reasons,” he remarked.

Jaishankar further added that Modi enjoys a positive rapport with Trump, unlike many other global leaders. “Trump is an unconventional leader, and he hasn’t had the best history with some world leaders. However, in Modi’s case, it’s different. He had a great visit.”

With the investigation into USAID’s funding ongoing, further details are expected to emerge in the coming weeks. The Indian government remains committed to ensuring transparency and preventing external interference in its electoral process.

Jaishankar disagreed with Western views on global democracy, highlighting India’s democratic success. He emphasized the importance of democratic resilience and food security in India, countering claims about democracy’s decline. Jaishankar urged the West to embrace successful democratic models from other regions.
</excerpt>

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar contradicted the Western view at the Munich Security Conference 2025 that democracy is in trouble around the world, highlighting India’s robust democratic system.

Jaishankar expressed his opinion during a panel discussion on ‘Live to Vote Another Day: Fortifying Democratic Resilience’, which included Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, US Senator Elissa Slotkin, and Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski. Asked for his opinion of Western democracy, Jaishankar started by holding up his finger, declaring, “Well, before I do that, I seemed to be an optimist in what is quite a pessimistic panel, if not room. I will start by holding up my finger and don’t mind it, it is the index finger. This, the spot you see on my nail, is a spot of a voter. We recently had an election in my state. We had a national election last year.”

He added that almost two-thirds of voters in India participate in elections, with about 700 million of 900 million voters taking part in the national elections. “We cast the votes within one day,” he added.

India’s Democracy and Its Success

Jaishankar countered the belief that democracy is weakening all over the world by saying, “Nobody disputes the (election) outcome once it’s declared and by the way, ever since we’ve been voting in the contemporary world, 20 per cent of individuals vote more today than decades ago.” He said, “For us democracy is indeed delivered,” highlighting the success with democracy in implementation by India.

Responding to US Senator Elissa Slotkin’s comment that ‘democracy doesn’t put food on the table’, Jaishankar snapped back, “Actually, in my part of the world, it does. Today, because we are a democratic, we give nutrition support, and food to 800 million people and for whom that is a matter of how healthy they are and how full their stomachs are.” He described various regions of the world having different conversations regarding democracy and warned against the presumption of a universal trend, saying, “Please do not assume that this a kind of universal phenomenon, it is not.”

Jaishankar calls for ‘Honest Dialogue’

Jaishankar admitted that if democracy is thriving in some areas, it is under pressure in others. He called for ‘honest dialogue on why it is not’ functioning in some places. He also pointed out that most of the existing issues are due to the model of globalization pursued in recent decades, saying, “I would argue that as to an extent as someone dispassionately viewing it, which was your question, there are some problems, a lot of it is a accumulated problem of the model of globalisation that we have followed for the last 25-30 years.”

In a tweet on X, Jaishankar explained that at MSC 2025, he differed ‘with the prevailing political pessimism’ and spoke on the subject of ‘foreign interference’.

India’s Democratic Model and the Global South

Jaishankar continued to bring to the forefront that upon becoming independent, India took the democratic route because its society is basically consultative and pluralistic in nature. He added that even though the West had earlier looked at democracy as a Western attribute, most of the nations of the Global South are more inclined to identify with India’s journey, which they can apply in their own society. He insisted that India has stuck to its democratic principles notwithstanding many challenges it has encountered.

The External Affairs Minister ended by calling on the West to acknowledge successful democratic examples elsewhere in the world if it is to witness democracy flourish everywhere.

The 61st Munich Security Conference, which took place in Germany from February 14 to February 16, is an important venue for foreign and security policy and global issues discussion.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed no talks or initiatives have been made to resume trade. Pakistan has expressed interest, but no concrete steps have been taken.
</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday clarified that no discussions had been held with Pakistan over the resumption of trade with India. Speaking at a news conference in Washington, he said, “After last year, there have been no talks with Pakistan on trade, nor has any initiative come from their side.”

Jaishankar also stated that India never boycotted trade with Pakistan and the boycott of trade was made by the government of Pakistan in 2019. “Right from the start, our preference was that India should be the most favoured nation. We were always granting MFN status to Pakistan. But they never gave that status to us,” he further stated.

Why Was India-Pakistan Trade Suspended?

Trade between the two nations was stopped in August 2019, when the then-Pakistan government, headed by Imran Khan, stopped all bilateral trade. This move was taken in response to India’s abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Islamabad also downgraded diplomatic ties with New Delhi as part of the response.

Pakistan Seeks to Revive Trade

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Ishaq Dar acknowledged the long overdue suspension of trade ties since 2019, as late as in August last year. He attributed the situation to India imposing “heavy duties” on Pakistani imports following the Pulwama attack.

India decided to impose 200 per cent duty on imports from Pakistan, suspended the Kashmir bus service and trade across the Line of Control after the Pulwama attack.” The statement is part of a written response by Pakistan Peoples Party lawmaker Sharmila Faruqui in the National Assembly to a query about challenges facing trade with neighboring countries, particularly India.

While addressing a news conference in London in March, Dar spoke of how the Pakistan business community is keen on restoring trade ties with India. However, his office clarified immediately that there are “no plans to bring back the system which has been non-existent since 2019”.
While Pakistan occasionally reported it wants to resuscitate economic ties with India, no concrete steps have been taken to open a dialogue process with India.

</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized that India will not allow any external influence to dictate its decisions, affirming that the country will always act in its national interest and for global benefit without succumbing to pressure.

In a video message for an event in Mumbai, Jaishankar said, “India will never allow others to have a veto on its choices. We will always do what is right for our nation and for the world, without being intimidated to conform.” He stressed that independence should not be confused with neutrality and highlighted India’s commitment to progress without rejecting its heritage.

The minister also noted that in today’s era of globalization, technology and tradition must go hand in hand for India’s advancement. He added that India’s rise as a global power should not come at the cost of its cultural identity, stating, “India must progress while staying true to its ‘Bharatiyata’ (Indianness). Only then can India emerge as a leading power in a multipolar world.”

Jaishankar was speaking at the 27th SIES Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati National Eminence Award event in Mumbai, where he was honored for his public leadership. The awards, named after the 68th seer of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi, recognize achievements in various fields, with a focus on spirituality.

Jaishankar also underscored India’s uniqueness as a civilization state and the importance of leveraging its cultural strengths on the global stage. He emphasized the need for the younger generation to understand and appreciate India’s heritage.

Reflecting on India’s recent strides, Jaishankar said that the country had proven its capabilities, confidence, and commitment to development. He noted that India had overcome historical challenges like poverty and discrimination, positioning itself as an independent force on the global stage, particularly in advocating for the global south’s well-being.

While acknowledging the ongoing constraints, Jaishankar emphasized that India is rediscovering its true self, with democracy fostering more authentic voices.

Jaishankar On How Trump’s Return Will Shape Globalisation

<excerpt>S. Jaishankar discusses the impact of Donald Trump’s re-election on globalisation, highlighting changes in supply chains, digital platforms, and mobility. India sees opportunity in global disruptions.
</excerpt>

Donald Trump’s unexpected comeback in the 2024 US presidential election has raised questions about the future of globalisation. S. Jaishankar, India’s Foreign Minister, shared his insights on how Trump’s re-election will reshape global policies and trade dynamics during a recent briefing with Australian business leaders.

Reordering of Supply Chains: India’s Opportunity

One of the most significant changes predicted is the acceleration of the ongoing global reordering of supply chains. Jaishankar pointed out that while this shift could disrupt established systems, India views it as a golden opportunity. Having missed out on the manufacturing boom in the 1990s, India now has a chance to strengthen its position in global supply chains, potentially starting with companies like Apple.

Geopolitical Hedging: A Changing Global Landscape

Jaishankar also highlighted how geopolitical relationships would evolve under Trump’s leadership. He anticipates more countries, including India, will seek stronger international partnerships to maintain stability in the face of unpredictable policy changes.

The Rise of Digital Trust and Payment Platforms

The digital realm will play a more significant role in the post-Trump era. Jaishankar explained that the trust surrounding digital technologies, such as payment platforms, will become crucial. With increasing scrutiny over the digital tools countries use, choosing the right platform will be essential for securing global relationships.

Mobility: A Global Workforce on the Move

Finally, Jaishankar addressed the growing importance of mobility in a rapidly changing world. As countries face demographic challenges, there will be a greater need for skilled workers. Even under Trump, the US is expected to adjust its immigration policies to prioritize economically-justified mobility, fostering a more integrated global workforce.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, addressing the Indian community in Brisbane, Australia, reflected on the evolving relationship between India and Australia over the past decade. Speaking during his five-day visit, Jaishankar acknowledged the pivotal role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Australian government, global shifts, and the Indian diaspora in shaping this transformation.

Modi’s Early Query Sparks Diplomatic Momentum

Recalling his time as India’s ambassador to the United States, Jaishankar shared how, shortly into his first term, PM Modi had questioned the stagnant India-Australia relationship despite shared language, culture, and historical ties. “He asked, ‘Explain to me why hasn’t our relationship with Australia developed? It has everything going for it… yet somehow, something is not happening,’” Jaishankar told the audience, admitting he was initially “without an answer” to the Prime Minister’s query.

A Relationship Strengthened by Effort, Not Autopilot

The minister emphasized that the significant progress seen in bilateral ties has not been by chance, but through dedicated efforts from both nations. “This didn’t happen on auto-pilot. People, on both ends, made great efforts to build it,” he remarked. The relationship has deepened due to four factors, Jaishankar explained: the vision of PM Modi, the Australian government’s engagement, global dynamics, and the active contributions of the Indian diaspora in Australia.

Strengthening Ties: A New Consulate in Brisbane

As part of his visit, Jaishankar will inaugurate India’s fourth consulate in Australia, located in Brisbane, underscoring the importance India places on strengthening its presence and supporting the Indian community in the region.

</excerpt>

Nepal‘s decision to redesign its 100-rupee currency note to include disputed border territories has reignited longstanding tensions with India. The new banknote features regions such as Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, and Kalapani, reflecting Nepal’s revised political map—a move India has criticized as an “artificial enlargement” of borders.

Background of the Dispute

The border dispute between India and Nepal dates back to the 1816 Treaty of Sugauli, which established the Kali River as the western boundary of Nepal. The ambiguity regarding the river’s source has led to differing territorial claims. Nepal asserts that the river originates from Limpiyadhura, thereby including Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, and Kalapani within its territory. Conversely, India maintains that the river’s source is near Kalapani, placing these areas within Indian territory.

Recent Developments

In May 2020, Nepal published a revised political map incorporating the disputed regions, a move that India rejected as untenable. The situation escalated when Nepal announced the printing of new 100-rupee notes featuring this map. The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) awarded the contract to the China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation to print 300 million copies of these banknotes at a cost of approximately $8.99 million.

India’s Response

India has expressed strong objections to Nepal’s actions. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that Nepal’s unilateral measures would not alter the ground reality, emphasizing that such actions are not conducive to resolving boundary issues.

Strategic Implications

The involvement of a Chinese state-owned company in printing Nepal’s currency has added a layer of complexity to the issue. Given the strategic sensitivities in the India-Nepal-China tri-border region, this move has raised concerns in India about potential Chinese influence in Nepal’s internal affairs.

Domestic Reactions in Nepal

Within Nepal, the decision has sparked debate. Chiranjivi Nepal, the economic advisor to President Ram Chandra Paudel, resigned after criticizing the government’s move to include the disputed territories on the new banknotes. His resignation highlights the internal divisions regarding the handling of the border dispute with India.

Historical Context

The Kalapani region, situated at the tri-junction of India, Nepal, and China, has been a point of contention for decades. The strategic importance of this area, especially the Lipulekh Pass, which serves as a trade and pilgrimage route to Tibet, underscores the significance of the dispute. Both nations have historically used maps and administrative measures to assert their claims over these territories.

Diplomatic Efforts

Despite the tensions, both countries have expressed a willingness to resolve the dispute through diplomatic channels. Nepal’s Foreign Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha emphasized the importance of addressing the boundary issue with India through diplomatic means and dialogue. However, the inclusion of disputed territories on official documents, such as currency notes, complicates these efforts and may hinder progress toward a mutually acceptable resolution.

Also read: Bihar: Kishor Asks Voters to Reject Caste, Free Ration Politics

Conclusion

The redesign of Nepal’s 100-rupee note to feature disputed territories has intensified the longstanding border dispute with India. The involvement of a Chinese company in producing these banknotes adds a strategic dimension to the issue. While both nations have deep-rooted cultural and economic ties, the resolution of this territorial dispute remains a complex challenge that requires careful diplomatic engagement.

Jaishankar has called for India’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) during his address at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. He stressed the need for reforming established institutions to foster a more equitable global order and reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stance that “this is not an era of war.”

Reforming Global Institutions for Equitable Development

Dr. Jaishankar highlighted the profound changes in the global order brought about by BRICS, while noting that many past inequities persist in new forms. He emphasized the uneven benefits of globalization and how the COVID-19 pandemic, along with various conflicts, has intensified the challenges faced by the Global South.

“The world is in danger of falling significantly behind in realizing the targets of sustainable development goals,” he warned. He outlined several measures to create a more equitable global order, including:

Strengthening Independent Platforms: Expanding choices and reducing reliance on those that can be leveraged.

Reforming the UNSC: Updating both permanent and non-permanent member categories, as well as reforming multilateral development banks.

Democratizing the Global Economy: Establishing more production hubs to enhance supply chain resilience.

Correcting Colonial Infrastructure Distortions: Improving global connectivity options while respecting territorial integrity.

Sharing Innovative Initiatives: Promoting initiatives like India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and the International Solar Alliance.

Dr. Jaishankar’s remarks come amid India’s longstanding demand for a permanent UNSC seat, which has gained support from major global powers, including the US, UK, and France.

Addressing Global Conflicts with Diplomacy

In his address, Dr. Jaishankar also touched upon the ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine, reiterating the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in conflict resolution. He noted that “disputes and differences must be settled by dialogue,” emphasizing adherence to international law and a zero-tolerance policy for terrorism.

He expressed concerns over the situation in the Middle East, stating, “There is widespread anxiety that the conflict would spread further in the region,” and reiterated India’s long-held position advocating for a two-state solution in the Palestine issue.

Calls for Conflict Resolution and a Two-State Solution

During his address, Jaishankar expressed widespread anxiety regarding the potential for further regional conflict. He advocated for a fair and durable approach to resolving disputes, highlighting the importance of reaching a two-state solution. “Addressing conflicts and tensions effectively is a particular need of the day,” he stated, reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message that “this is not an era of war” and that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

He stressed the importance of respecting international law and maintaining zero tolerance for terrorism. Jaishankar noted that maritime trade has been significantly affected by the ongoing tensions and warned of the serious human and material consequences of further escalation in the Middle East.

Advancing an Equitable Global Order

Jaishankar also discussed several measures aimed at creating a more equitable global order. He suggested strengthening and expanding independent platforms, reforming established institutions such as the UNSC, and democratizing the global economy by establishing more production hubs. He called for correcting historical distortions in global infrastructure and emphasized the need for collective efforts to enhance connectivity while respecting territorial integrity and sovereignty.

He observed that while forces of change have progressed, many long-standing global issues have become more complex. He noted the diversification of production and consumption and the accelerated development of nations emerging from colonialism, suggesting that the current economic, political, and cultural rebalancing could lead to a more multipolar world.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the Closed Plenary Session of the BRICS Summit and reiterated India’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy over conflict. He highlighted the collaborative efforts that led to defeating challenges like COVID-19 and expressed optimism about creating opportunities for a safe, strong, and prosperous future for coming generations. Modi also called for global regulations concerning cybersecurity and safe AI practices.

India Accepts Pakistan’s Invitation for SCO Summit

MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed India’s participation, stating, “EAM Jaishankar will lead a delegation to Pakistan to participate in the SCO summit.” The announcement followed a formal invitation extended by Pakistan in August for India’s attendance at the SCO Council of Heads of Government (CHG) meeting.

In a media briefing on August 30, Jaiswal acknowledged the invitation from Islamabad but refrained from providing details at the time, saying, “We don’t have an update on that. We will let you know what the situation is later.”

Recent History of High-Level SCO Engagements

This visit follows Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s attendance at the SCO meeting in Goa in May 2023, marking the first visit by a Pakistani foreign minister to India in six years. The upcoming summit in Islamabad will be another significant diplomatic engagement between the two nations under the SCO framework.

The SCO, a permanent intergovernmental international organization, was established on June 15, 2001, in Shanghai by founding members China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan joined the group in 2017, and Iran became a full member in 2023.

Currently, the SCO has nine member states, three observer states (Afghanistan, Mongolia, and Belarus), and 14 dialogue partners, including countries like Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the UAE, and Nepal. The 2022 Samarkand SCO Summit initiated the process of raising Belarus’ status to that of a full member.

Jaishankar visited Berlin recently and met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, delivering personal greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a post on X, Jaishankar expressed his honor at meeting Scholz and conveyed PM Modi’s regards, while also looking forward to Scholz’s upcoming visit to India for the 7th Inter-Governmental Consultations.

Jaishankar’s visit to Germany from September 10-11 marked his third bilateral trip to Berlin since becoming External Affairs Minister and his second trip to Germany this year. His previous visit was to Munich in February 2024 for the Munich Security Conference.

During his Berlin visit, Jaishankar also met with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. The two leaders reviewed bilateral relations in preparation for the 7th India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC) scheduled for October 2024 in New Delhi. They noted that the 18th Asia Pacific Conference (APK) of German Businesses will be held in New Delhi next month, which is expected to enhance the business ties between the two countries.

In addition to discussions on regional and global issues such as Ukraine, the Indo-Pacific region, and West Asia, Jaishankar met with Jens Ploetner, the Foreign and Security Policy Advisor to the German Chancellor, and Boris Pistorius, the Federal Minister of Defence. These meetings reaffirmed the commitment to strengthening strategic, defense, and security cooperation between India and Germany.

Jaishankar also held discussions with Friedrich Merz, Chairman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group; Michael Roth, Chairman of the Bundestag’s Foreign Affairs Committee; and other German Parliamentarians. The conversations focused on deepening bilateral engagement, including parliamentary cooperation and addressing key regional and global developments.

Furthermore, Jaishankar was invited as a Guest of Honour to speak at the Annual Conference of German Ambassadors, addressing German Ambassadors and key business leaders.

India and Germany have enjoyed a strategic partnership since 2000, and next year will mark the 25th anniversary of this collaboration. The partnership spans various sectors including trade, investment, defense, science, technology, innovation, sustainability, renewable energy, emerging technologies, development cooperation, culture, education, mobility, and people-to-people connections.

Jaishankar addressed India’s diplomatic stance during the launch of ambassador Rajiv Sikri’s book, ‘Strategic Conundrums: Reshaping India’s Foreign Policy’. Jaishankar made it clear that the era of continuous dialogue with Pakistan has ended.

He stated, “I think the era of uninterrupted dialogue with Pakistan is over. Actions have consequences. And insofar as Jammu and Kashmir is concerned, I think Article 370 is done. So the, the issue today is what kind of relationship can we possibly contemplate with Pakistan? Rajiv [Sikri] suggests [in his book] that perhaps India is content to continue at the current level of relationship. Maybe yes, maybe no… We are not passive. And whether events take a positive or a negative direction, either way, we will react to it,” as reported by ANI.

Jaishankar also discussed India’s relations with Afghanistan, highlighting the importance of understanding the geopolitical shifts. He said, “We must appreciate that the Afghanistan with the presence of America for us is very different from the Afghanistan without the presence of America.”

Regarding Bangladesh, Jaishankar noted that India would engage with “the government of the day” and seek mutual interests despite political changes. “Since Bangladesh’s independence, our relationship has gone up and down, and it is natural that we will deal with the government of the day. But we also have to recognise that there are political changes, and they can be disruptive. And clearly here we have to look for mutuality of interest,” he explained.

On Myanmar, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of the Northeast context, stating, “Going further east, there is Myanmar, which is both relevant and remote at the same time. And here again, I think the northeast, the context of the Northeast or Northeast is the overriding one. And we… have to find a balance between the government and other stakeholders, because that is the reality.”

</excerpt>

On Saturday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered a significant water and sanitation project worth USD 110 million to Maldives, funded by India. Covering 28 islands, the project was virtually inaugurated by Jaishankar, who is in Male for a three-day official visit from August 9 to 11. During the virtual event, Jaishankar highlighted that the development partnership between India and Maldives aims to address the needs and priorities of the Maldivian people and government.

“Our development partnership is driven by the needs and priorities of the people and the Government of Maldives and is a judicious mix of grants, loans, budgetary support, capacity building and training assistance. We are now entering a phase where many of these projects are getting realised on the ground, delivering tangible benefits to the common people,” said Jaishankar.

Jaishankar also pointed out the challenges of climate change, especially for small island developing states like the Maldives, and stressed the need to address issues related to freshwater availability and access. He mentioned that this initiative is in line with India’s own programs, “Har Ghar Jal” (Water to Every Home) and “Swachh Bharat” (Clean India).

“In our efforts to expand the scope and benefits of development cooperation, we are mindful of the challenges posed by climate change, especially, for small island developing states such as the Maldives, which are even more vulnerable to the vagaries of rising sea levels. One of the immediate concerns is the availability and access of freshwater resources,” said Jaishankar.

“It has been our objective to provide ecologically sustainable low-cost solutions to our development partners so that they are not only able to access potable water but also have the capability to treat sewage, thereby, protecting the delicate ecology of these islands and atolls. This finds resonance in our own initiatives in India of ‘Har Ghar Jal’ and ‘Swachha Bharat’, i.e, ‘Water to Every Home’ and ‘Clean India,” he added.

This project has provided safe drinking water to 32 islands and established a sewerage system in 17 islands.

“I am happy to note that this has directly impacted the lives of 28,000 Maldivians I believe. Under this project, the latest technologies have been used to provide clean drinking water and safe sewerage disposal. In addition, the buildings are also equipped with solar energy providing support to the island grids. With a total funding of USD 110 million, this is the largest climate adaptation implemented in Maldives with international collaboration,” the EAM said.

He also expressed hope that this project will enhance the lives of women on the islands, who are primarily tasked with collecting clean water.

“It is also significant to note that the completion of this project has supplemented the Government of Maldives’ endeavours in reaching its Sustainable Development Goals by establishing climate-resilient and cost-effective water and sewerage systems. I am sure that this will go a long way in improving the lives of the women on these islands who bear the primary burden of fetching clean water,” Jaishankar said.

“India-Maldives development cooperation embodies the motto of our partnership – ‘Imagined by Maldives, Delivered by India’. It will be our endeavour to harness this defining feature of our relationship and scale greater heights. And I hope President with your guidance and encouragement, our joint efforts, our joint activities and our shared vision will form an important milestone in the journey of our two nations together,” he added.

Earlier on Saturday, Jaishankar met with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, reaffirming New Delhi’s dedication to enhancing India-Maldives relations for the mutual benefit of both countries and the broader region.

Muizzu expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government for their consistent support of the island nation. He added that the “enduring partnership” between New Delhi and Male is strengthening the ties between the two countries through cooperation in security, development, and cultural exchange.

EAM Jaishankar’s visit is his first trip to the Maldives since his reappointment for a second term. It follows the recent visit of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu to India for the swearing-in ceremony of the new cabinet and council of ministers.

He stated, “We have 91 cases of Indian nationals recruited into the Russian Army. Unfortunately, eight have passed away, 14 have been discharged or returned with our help, and 69 are still awaiting release.”

Jaishankar added that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he had personally raised these issues with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and President Vladimir Putin during their visit to Moscow last month. He assured that President Putin had promised that any Indian nationals currently in the Russian Army would be discharged and released.

However, Jaishankar noted that Russian authorities claim these nationals entered into contracts for military service, a position the Indian government disputes.

In response to inquiries about actions taken, Jaishankar mentioned that a criminal case has been filed. The CBI has registered a case against 19 individuals and entities involved in human trafficking. Investigations have identified 10 traffickers, with four individuals already in judicial custody.

AIMIM Chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi also questioned Jaishankar, asking if the Indian Embassy in Russia would ensure the return of the 69 Indian nationals and if the government would cancel the passports of those involved in the scam. Jaishankar confirmed that the remains of eight deceased nationals have been sent back to India and assured ongoing inquiries into the 19 cases.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Russia on July 8-9, for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit, saw him raise the issue of Indian nationals in the Russian Army with President Putin. Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra reported that the Russian government promised an “early discharge” of these individuals.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had previously uncovered a major human trafficking network that deceived Indians with promises of lucrative jobs abroad, only to send them to the Russia-Ukraine war zone. The network operated through social media and local contacts, luring victims with the promise of high-paying jobs in Russia.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia presents a significant opportunity for direct discussions with President Vladimir Putin on various issues, including trade, according to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. On Sunday, Jaishankar emphasized the need to address certain unresolved issues between India and Russia.

“There are issues…like the trade imbalance…So, at a leadership level, it will be a great opportunity for Prime Minister Modi and President Putin to sit down and directly talk to each other. And then obviously, as per their directions, we will see how to take the relationship forward,” he stated.

Jaishankar also highlighted the importance of the annual summit tradition between the two nations. “Now, this was a tradition. It’s a good tradition. We are two countries that have such a strong and very steady history of working together. So both of us value very much the need for an annual summit,” he told ANI. He mentioned that he carried a message from the prime minister during his visit to Moscow at the end of the previous year, reaffirming India’s commitment to the annual summit.

After a three-year hiatus, PM Modi will travel to Russia on July 8, following an invitation from President Putin for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit. The last summit was held in December 2021 when President Putin visited New Delhi. During this visit, PM Modi and President Putin are expected to discuss regional and global issues of mutual interest.

India’s ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, described the visit as “very significant,” noting the importance of Russia as a source of energy resources for India and the expansion of trade in other areas. He emphasized the leaders’ need to exchange views on bilateral developments and other regional and international issues.

During his stay in Moscow on July 8 and 9, PM Modi’s agenda includes a private meeting with President Putin, delegation-level talks, restricted discussions, a lunch hosted by President Putin, a visit to the VDNKH Complex’s Rosatom Pavilion, and the exchange of documents prepared for signing during the visit. PM Modi will also address the Indian diaspora.

The two leaders will discuss global matters, including the Ukraine-Russia conflict. They will also address the trade imbalance, as bilateral trade has exceeded USD 65 billion, favoring Russia. Kumar explained that efforts are underway to balance trade by expanding India’s export items and quantities while sustaining growth in bilateral trade. He mentioned exploring new export items like agricultural products, ceramic tiles, auto components, engineering goods, and chemical products, in addition to traditional exports like pharmaceuticals.

Swift Response and Harrowing Escapes

The fire broke out on Tuesday, and despite a quick response from local authorities, many residents died in their sleep or resorted to desperate measures, such as jumping from the first floor, to escape the blaze. A senior Kuwaiti journalist told CNN-News18 that the intense heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius, likely contributed to the tragedy, prompting regular government warnings.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed deep concern over Canada’s stance on Khalistani separatist elements during a recent interview with PTI. He criticized Canada for providing political space to these groups, suggesting that it prioritizes its vote bank over the rule of law. Jaishankar emphasized that while India respects freedom of speech, it does not condone threats to foreign diplomats, support for separatism, or the allowance of political space for violent elements.

Jaishankar questioned how individuals with questionable backgrounds, including Khalistani supporters among Sikh immigrants from Punjab, are allowed to enter and reside in Canada without thorough background checks. He highlighted the importance of adhering to rules and laws in a society, implying that Canada’s tolerance of such individuals raises concerns about the strength of its rule of law versus political interests.

The minister noted that ties between India and Canada have deteriorated, particularly since Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations regarding Indian involvement in the killing of Nijjar. Jaishankar criticized Canada’s response to India’s concerns, stating that Canada often cites freedom of speech as justification for its actions, despite the harm caused to India’s interests.

India has raised concerns about the safety of its diplomats in Canada due to threats from pro-Khalistani groups. Following Trudeau’s allegations, India requested a reduction in Canada’s diplomatic presence, leading to the withdrawal of several diplomats and their families. India’s primary issue with Canada remains its tolerance of separatist and anti-India elements, exemplified by the case of Nijjar’s murder where specific evidence from Canada has not been provided yet.

Jaishankar praised the efforts of @India_in_”Jaishankar Applauds Indian Embassy for Crew’s Return”Iran and expressed satisfaction that Ann Tessa Joseph, a crew member from Thrissur, Kerala, had safely returned home. This achievement was seen as a diplomatic victory for India.

Ms. Joseph, a deck cadet on the Israel-linked cargo ship MSC Aries seized by Iran on April 13, arrived safely at Cochin International Airport. The Regional Passport Officer of Cochin welcomed her.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that Ms. Joseph’s return was a result of collaboration between the Indian Mission in Tehran and the Iranian government. They also mentioned ongoing communication with the remaining 16 crew members, who are reported to be in good health and in contact with their families.

The MEA highlighted that the Indian Mission in Tehran is actively engaged with both the remaining crew members and Iranian authorities to ensure their well-being. This effort included a conversation between External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal provided details of Ms. Joseph’s release and expressed gratitude for the cooperation of Iranian authorities in facilitating her return. The mission continues to work towards the well-being of the remaining crew members.

The container ship MSC Aries, associated with Israel, was seized by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy near the Strait of Hormuz, with 17 Indian nationals on board. The ship’s last known location was near Dubai on April 12, heading towards the Strait of Hormuz.

EAM S. Jaishankar highlighted their discussion on releasing the Indian crew members and assessing the current regional situation. He shared on X, “Took up the release of 17 Indian crew members of MSC Aries. Discussed the current situation in the region. Stressed the importance of avoiding escalation, exercising restraint and returning to diplomacy. Agreed to remain in touch.” Following the seizure, India swiftly engaged with Iranian authorities to secure the release of the Indian nationals.

“We are aware that a cargo ship ‘MSC Aries’ has been taken control of by Iran. We have learnt that there are 17 Indian nationals onboard. We are in touch with the Iranian authorities through diplomatic channels, both in Tehran and in Delhi, to ensure the security, welfare and early release of Indian nationals,” ANI reported citing sources.

The ship, known as the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries, was directed towards Tehran’s territorial waters, as per ANI quoting Iranian state media.

In light of Iran’s attack on Israel, New Delhi called for an immediate de-escalation of the conflict. India, alongside the US, UK, and France, urged restraint, a return to diplomacy, and emphasized the importance of maintaining security and stability in the region. The ministry stated on Sunday, “We call for immediate de-escalation, exercise of restraint, stepping back from violence and return to the path of diplomacy. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation… It is vital that security and stability are maintained in the region.”

“I argue for dealing with China from a basis of realism — that strain of realism, which I feel — strains all the way from Sardar Patel to Narendra Modi — that is the strain of realism which I feel should allow us to have a certain approach,” said Jaishankar.
The External Affairs Minister also lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his pragmatic approach on China.
“I would say that the Modi Government has been very much more and in conformity with a strain of realism, which originated from Sardar Patel,” he said.
Explaining the difference in the approach of India’s first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Sardar Patel and first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, Jaishankar highlighted the difference of opinion among the two stalwarts.
