</excerpt>

Romanian President Nicusor Dan indicated on Tuesday that he might nominate a prime minister later this week, depending on pro-European parties reaching consensus on such major measures to cut the European Union’s biggest budget deficit and prevent a possible credit rating downgrade.

Dan, a centrist who won May’s divisive presidential election amid rising far-right influence, faces pressure to help form a ruling majority capable of passing deficit-cutting reforms by the end of June. Failure to do so could result in Romania losing its investment-grade rating.

Although the European Commission, IMF, and credit agencies insist that tax increases particularly to value-added tax or Romania’s flat 10% income tax are essential, Dan and the four pro-EU parties remain reluctant. Instead, they prefer reducing state expenditures and restructuring public institutions.

“There is a hierarchy of priorities cutting unnecessary state spending comes first, then merging institutions, rescheduling investments to 2026, and lastly, potential tax hikes,” Dan said during a visit to Moldova. “I hope we resort to taxes as little as possible.”

Despite identifying 60 to 80 possible measures, the parties have yet to reach consensus. Meanwhile, two sources told Reuters that credit rating agencies warned in May that Romania could face a downgrade unless credible reforms, including tax hikes, are implemented. The next review is due in August.

Claudiu Nasui, a member of the Save Romania Union and a vocal advocate for spending cuts, claims he has pinpointed 34 billion lei ($7.73 billion) in potential savings for the second half of 2025 without impacting healthcare, education, or defense. However, many of the proposed cuts are politically sensitive and may face resistance.

“Any deficit-cutting measure will be unpopular,” Nasui said. “But avoiding them harms the poorest most.”

</excerpt>

Tens of thousands of activists marched through the streets of Bucharest on Saturday in a colorful LGBTQ Pride parade, demanding legal recognition of homosexual partnerships and equal rights, only weeks after Romania’s presidential election gave strength to far-right voices.

The parade was 20 years after Romania’s first Pride parade and was held at a timely moment for LGBTQ communities in Central and Eastern Europe, where nationalist politics are gaining strength. Marchers waved rainbow flags and banners with slogans like “Love is the worst feeling you could hate” and “Civil partnership for all,” as they marched to music and celebration.

An estimated 30,000 people participated in the march, according to LGBTQ rights organization ACCEPT, which planned the event. “We want legal protection for homosexual couples, a simple legal process for changing gender, and hate speech protection,” commented ACCEPT president Teodora Roseti.

Romania, a member state of the European Union, has so far not followed a 2023 European Court of Human Rights decision that determined the country had committed a human rights violation by not recognizing same-sex couples’ relationships. Homosexuality was only decriminalized in 2001 but marriage and civil unions for gay couples remain illegal there.

The parade took place to the backdrop of mounting conservative opposition. A small counter-demonstration had convened earlier in the day, with protesters decrying the country to remain Orthodox Christian and holding far-right symbols, the Celtic cross.

The country’s recent presidential poll was won by centrist mayor Nicusor Dan over far-right candidate George Simion, who openly opposes LGBTQ rights. Throughout the course of the campaign, LGBTQ organizations reported a spike in hate speech, and the offices of ACCEPT and Mozaiq were vandalized.

In the wider region, Hungary’s parliament recently passed legislation effectively prohibiting Pride parades, triggering fears of a wider clampdown on LGBTQ rights in Eastern Europe.

</excerpt>

Infamous influencer Andrew Tate has been caught speeding at 196km/h (121mph) in a 50km/h area in Romania, authorities have confirmed.

The British-American citizen was filmed driving at almost four times the speed limit in a village some 184km outside Romanian capital Bucharest.

The 38-year-old was fined £310 ($420), according to local traffic law, and has his driving licence revoked for 120 days because of the seriousness of the offence, the police said.

Ongoing Criminal Charges in Romania, UK, and US

The self-declared misogynist and his brother Tristan are facing charges such as rape and human trafficking in Romania, alongside independent accusations in the UK and US. They all deny wrongdoing.

The brothers can travel domestically in Romania, where they are residents, and internationally pending court-imposed conditions on their cases.

History of Speeding Offences, Luxury Car Boasts of Andrew Tate

Andrew Tate was pulled over for speeding on Saturday in the central village of Bujoreni, police stated.

They added in a release that excessive speed continued to be one of the primary causes of road fatalities in Romania.

The older Tate has regularly boasted about his fleet of sports cars, such as Bugattis and Lamborghinis, regularly uploading pictures of himself posing beside them on social media.

The ex-kickboxer has amassed millions of followers online, where he frequently blended political messages with the promotion of a flashy lifestyle.

He has been caught speeding multiple times while driving in Romania.

Tate was pulled over in a town just outside Bucharest in April 2021 for driving a Porsche at 138km/h, local reports said. A year earlier, he had also received a fine for speeding in Germany.

A number of his luxury vehicles were confiscated by Romanian courts in 2023 as part of legal action against him.

Views of Andrew Tate on Corruption and His Legal Future

Tate has reportedly criticised British police for refusing bribes during traffic stops, calling it “offensive”. He has cited such attitudes as among the reasons for moving his businesses to Romania in 2017.

A central theme in Tate’s online messaging is the idea that an “elite club” of successful individuals live free from the challenges faced by others.

Tate has stated that he escaped “the Western world” by moving to Romania, “where corruption is accessible to everybody”.

A fan site quoted him saying: “If corruption exists, which it does, let us all play.”

British prosecutors have said Andrew and Tristan Tate will return to the UK to face 21 criminal charges – including rape and human trafficking – once proceedings against them in Romania have concluded.

The brothers are also facing a separate, civil lawsuit brought by four women who allege they were coerced into sex work.

Andrew Tate also faces a lawsuit in the US from an ex-girlfriend who accuses him of sexual assault.

The brothers have characterised themselves as innocent in relation to all the cases against them.

</excerpt>

Romania is attempting again to vote in a new president, half a year since the initial effort was marred by scandal and confusion.

The first place in 24 November went to a radical outsider who has mystical leanings, Calin Georgescu, but that victory was invalidated on suspicion of campaign manipulation and Russian involvement.

US Vice President JD Vance strongly criticised Romania in February over that decision, sending shockwaves through a Romanian political establishment that relies so much on its special relationship with the US. Georgescu was still prevented from participating in today’s rerun.

Nationalist vs Centrists in High-Stakes Elections in Romania

It is a matchup between a nationalist, George Simion, of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) and three centrists: the well-liked mayor of Bucharest Nicusor Dan; Crin Antonescu, a liberal of the ruling Social-Democrat and National Liberal coalition; and Elena Lasconi, an independent.

Seven other contenders are on the ballot. In the event of no one gaining more than 50% of the vote, a run-off between the two top candidates will take place on 18 May.

“This election is not about one candidate or another, but about every Romanian who has been lied to, ignored, humiliated, and still has the strength to believe and defend our identity and rights,” Simion posted on X on Friday.

Opinion polls – notoriously inaccurate in Romania – indicate that he will be first today, then will have a difficult fight with either Nicusor Dan or Crin Antonescu in the run-off.

Global Stakes: Ukraine, NATO and U.S. Ties

The outcome is anxiously awaited in European capitals, Washington, Moscow and Kyiv. Romania is a key transit country for weapons systems and ammunition to Ukraine. It possesses a US missile defense shield at Deveselu, and three large airbases from which Nato conducts air policing missions up to the Ukraine-Moldova border, and out over the Black Sea.

Ukraine ships 70% of its grain along the Black Sea coast, via Romanian territorial waters, to Istanbul. Romania’s navy mines out those waters, and Romanian air force trains Ukrainian pilots to fly F-16s. The Trump administration is reconsidering its relationship with Romania. A visa-waiver pact was suddenly cancelled on the eve of the election.

“Forget about any more help to Ukraine if Simion becomes president,” says George Scutaru, a security expert at the New Strategy Center in Bucharest. As head of the National Security Council, the president can veto any decision, and has a strong influence on security policy. But Scutaru expresses “prudent optimism” that one of the centrists will win the run-off.

Public anger at Romanian funding of Ukrainian refugees is a mainstay of Simion’s campaign, although he insists that he is not pro-Russian.

Public Mood and Diaspora Influence in Romania

Crowds of tourists throng the gardens of the Cotroceni Palace, the presidency in the west of Bucharest, on a boiling hot May afternoon. The decision of interim President Ilie Bolojan to throw open the buildings and gardens to the public is extremely popular among the tourists.

White and purple irises edge the walks under flowering horse chestnuts. A marching band of soldiers passes through flowerbeds of pansies and violets. The palace is a former monastery, rebuilt in the 17th century, which housed the Romanian royal family in the 19th century.

“I can’t really imagine Simion in here…” Ionut, a satirical writer, tells me beside an ornate waterfall, looking up at the palace walls. He voted for Simion in the first round of the election last November, out of anger at the constant delays to Romania’s full membership of the Schengen free-travel zone. And frustration with Romania’s outgoing president, Klaus Iohannis.

But Romania did at last join the Schengen land-borders on 1 January, and Iohannis took a step back the same month. “Romanians are less angry now,” he thinks. He said he is going to vote for Nicusor Dan in this election, but hasn’t decided quite yet.

Ana, a management consultant, walking with her family through the palace gardens, also supports Nicusor Dan. “I want to vote for both continuity and change,” she says. “Continuity in Romania’s relationship with Europe, but change as far as corruption is concerned. We young people don’t relate to the old parties any more,” – something Nicusor Dan has in common with Simion.

Numerous of Romania’s huge diaspora – a million are enrolled to vote – have voted already, particularly in Spain, Italy, Germany and the UK. They do not appear in opinion surveys, and can easily tip the ultimate outcome.

Simion Vows To Halt US Troop Pullout, Slams Election Rerun As “Democratic Coup”

<excerpt>Hard-right leader George Simion, front-runner in Romania’s election re-run, warns of US troop withdrawal and denounces December’s annulled vote as a “coup,” pledging to realign with Trump-era policies.
</excerpt>

Romanian hard-right leader George Simion, the favorite in the presidential election rerun, said on Friday he was the only candidate who could prevent a possible American pullout of troops from Romania. His comment follows an overall alarm regarding the future of NATO as well as American military presence in Eastern Europe.

The nation will redo its two-round election on May 4 and 18 following the Constitutional Court’s cancellation of December’s original vote, based on claims of Russian interference to which Moscow denied. Simion, who chairs the far-right Alliance for Uniting Romanians (AUR), condemned the cancellation as a “coup against democracy” and cautioned it could endanger Romania’s ties to Washington.

Not having American soldiers in Romania anymore is risky to me, and I am the only one who can prevent that,” Simion said in a five-hour press conference. He was bragging about his ideological positioning with the US Republican Party and the MAGA movement, presenting himself as Romania’s strongest connection to conservative America.

Simion’s AUR party emerged from anti-vaccination activism during the COVID-19 pandemic and has since become Romania’s main opposition force, particularly well-liked among the diaspora and young voters disenchanted with politics as usual.

Simion, 38, has been controversial with nationalist rhetoric and calls for Romania’s historical borders claims which have resulted in travel bans from Moldova and Ukraine. He brushed off the bans as “abusive restrictions” imposed by officials with “Soviet reflexes,” promising to roll them back if he were to be elected.

A vocal critic of EU leadership, Simion has vowed to end military aid to Ukraine, to defy same-sex marriage, and to reject Holocaust study as a standalone subject. He did, however, give qualified backing to higher defense spending if it strengthens Romanian industry.

Simion replaces an earlier disqualified, pro-Russian leader in the contest.

</excerpt>

A Romanian court lifted the house arrest order against internet personality Andrew Tate on Tuesday and replaced it with a less strict preventative measure, allowing him to travel freely while a criminal investigation continues. The decision allows him to travel throughout Romania, if he complies with certain legal conditions.

Tate and his brother Tristan, along with four others, have been investigated since August on a second criminal case charging organized crime, human trafficking, trafficking minors, sexual abuse of a minor, and money laundering. All the defendants, including the Tate brothers, have denied the charges.

This development comes after a December ruling in which the Bucharest Court of Appeals dismissed charges in an earlier case due to a flawed indictment and returned the case to prosecutors. The ruling delivered a significant setback to Romania’s anti-organized crime prosecuting unit, DIICOT.

Under the new conditions, known as judicial control, Tate will be required to report regularly to the police, maintain no contact with other suspects or witnesses in the case, and remain in Romania until the investigation concludes. His freedom within the country is now permitted, but he cannot leave Romania.

Among the most prominent names involved in the ongoing human trafficking trials in Romania are the Tate brothers, holding dual US and British citizenship and to fame previously, having risen because of their controversial online personas. Along with the proceedings that are now underway, the brothers have had a British arrest warrant issued and are to be extradited back to Britain after the Romanian trial is completed.

The legal team of Tate expressed that such a ruling brings “a decisive step forward, though the investigations on the charge remain open-ended.”.

</excerpt>

Tens of thousands of Romanians demonstrated in Bucharest on Sunday to call for the resumption of the presidential election that the country’s supreme court cancelled just last week. Protesters also demanded the resignation of outgoing President Klaus Iohannis, whose term expired on December 21.

The Romanian court cancelled the December 6 presidential election two days before the scheduled runoff. The cancellation was based on a suggestion that Calin Georgescu, a frontrunner and also a NATO critic had enjoyed an unfair social media campaign allegedly orchestrated by Russia, which Moscow denied. The court then ordered the entire election to be rerun, but there are no official dates set for the elections. Heads of Romanian parties have agreed on May 4 and 18.

The protest was organized by the opposition hard-right Alliance for Uniting Romanians. The tens of thousands marching through the capital brandished flags and shouted slogans, including “Freedom” and “Bring back the second round.” People protested, showing their discontent at the fact that the election had been cancelled. It is a protest, in which mainly people felt that their right to vote was infringed.

AUR leader George Simion underlined the demand for a return to democracy by restoring the election process. Some protesters carried portraits of Georgescu, while others were concerned that undemocratic processes might take place in Romania.

Questions in regard to the future of Georgescu’s candidacy still await answers while tensions escalate. Georgescu has also expressed himself against Romania’s stand on supporting Ukraine during the Russian invasion. Others are demanding transparency with regards to the reasons why the court cancelled the election as basis for its decision.

The rerun follows irregularities, with concerns over rising far-right influence and potential Russian interference.
</excerpt>

Romania’s ruling coalition has agreed to rerun the presidential election on May 4 and May 18, after a tumultuous election cycle that saw far-right, pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu win the first round in November. The far-right politician’s unexpected success raised concerns of Russian interference, leading Romania’s top court to annul the presidential race. The alliance has also resolved to promote a candidate to prevent the far right from dominating elections, and according to them, their favourite candidate is former Liberal leader Crin Antonescu.

Romania’s outgoing President Klaus Iohannis will stay on until the election in May. The new government, a coalition, will formally confirm the dates of the elections on Monday. Antonescu is currently considered the favourite but analysts believe that it could change in favor of other candidates closer to the election.

The country has faced significant challenges in recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing war in neighbouring Ukraine, which have contributed to widespread disillusionment with mainstream parties. In the Dec. 1 parliamentary elections, ultranationalist and far-right parties won nearly 35% of seats, which indicates growing dissatisfaction among voters with the establishment.

Romania’s president is half-executive. He commands the armed forces and represents Romania in EU and NATO summits. The president remains important in Romania’s military aid decisions and foreign relations as the country’s NATO allies raise concern over the increase in far-right parties’ support. Romania supported Ukraine since the 2022 invasion by Russia, including the training of pilots and military supplies.

The Schengen Area guarantees free movement to over 425 million EU citizens, as well as non-EU nationals legally residing in or visiting the EU for purposes such as tourism, business, or education. According to the European Commission, the Schengen provisions abolish internal border checks within the EU, while enforcing a uniform set of rules for external border controls. </excerpt>

Romania Court has cancelled the presidential election after the allegations of Russian interference, triggering widespread political chaos and international scrutiny. The ruling came on Friday, mandates a complete re-run of the election process, which had been set to conclude this weekend. Russia has denied any involvement in the matter.

Sunday’s second round was expected to feature Calin Georgescu, a far-right, pro-Russian candidate who led in the first round, against Elena Lasconi, a centrist leader favoring the European Union. Georgescu appeared at the school where he would have voted, addressing supporters and reporters.

“We shall continue in the democratic manner,” Georgescu stated in English. “Democracy has been cancelled with the court’s decision, but we must work to restore it.”

Elena Lasconi also expressed concerns about the court’s ruling. In a letter addressed to US President-elect Donald Trump and shared on social media, she highlighted fears of democratic backsliding. “For 35 years, Romania has embraced democracy, but corruption and poor governance have failed its people,” she wrote. “We are at risk of slipping into dictatorship within the next 15 years, or even sooner.”

The court’s decision has sparked debate across the political spectrum. While Georgescu and Lasconi criticized the annulment as a threat to democracy, Social Democrat Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu defended the move, calling it “the only correct solution.”

If Georgescu were to secure the presidency in a re-run, Romania’s political landscape could shift dramatically. His platform includes aligning Romania more closely with pro-Russia states such as Hungary and Slovakia, while reducing support for Ukraine as it continues its defense against Russian aggression.

Georgescu’s supporters have also condemned the court’s decision. Sorin Scuratovschi, 46, called the ruling “an attack on democracy” and “totally unfair.”

The annulment raises significant questions about Romania’s democratic integrity and its future direction as a NATO and EU member. The election re-run will be closely watched both domestically and internationally.

</excerpt>

Surprising Victory for Far-Right Independent Calin Georgescu

Experts predicted a far-right candidate would emerge as a frontrunner in Romania’s presidential election, but the results defied expectations. Independent candidate Calin Georgescu, who barely registered in pre-election polls, won the first round with about 22 percent of the vote, securing a place in the presidential runoff scheduled for December 8. Georgescu’s unexpected success has shifted the focus of the race, positioning him as a key contender in the final vote.

Tight Race for Second Place as Ciolacu and Lasconi Battle for Spot in Runoff

The competition for second place was a dramatic turn in itself. Left-wing Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), found himself in a close contest with Elena Lasconi of the pro-Western Save Romania Union. Lasconi, an outspoken supporter of Romania’s NATO and EU membership and Ukraine’s war efforts, narrowly secured second place, setting the stage for a fierce political battle.

Public Discontent With Incumbent Leadership

A total of 13 candidates competed in the election for Romania’s presidency, a position that holds considerable sway over national security, foreign policy, and judicial decisions. The presidential race is taking place alongside parliamentary elections on December 1, which will determine the next government. Outgoing center-right President Klaus Iohannis, after a decade in office, faced criticism for his passive approach to key issues, including the coronavirus pandemic. As economic concerns like inflation and corruption dominated voters’ minds, the question of Romania’s support for Ukraine also loomed large, especially with shifting US political dynamics under President-elect Donald Trump, who has questioned continued aid to Kyiv.

Romania’s Pro-Ukraine Stance Under Threat

Romania’s strong support for Ukraine, particularly in providing military assistance and facilitating grain exports, has been a cornerstone of Iohannis’ presidency. The country’s role as a crucial ally to Ukraine remains important amid the ongoing war with Russia.

Calin Georgescu’s Surprise Campaign

The major shock of the election came from Georgescu, a former member of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR). Despite low polling before the election, Georgescu’s pro-Russian stance, anti-NATO rhetoric, and controversial views gained traction. His remarks against NATO’s missile defense systems and his admiration for wartime Romanian figures with controversial legacies raised eyebrows but failed to deter his supporters. After leaving AUR in 2022 due to ideological differences, Georgescu has maintained a reputation as a prominent critic of NATO and a supporter of closer ties with Russia.

Looking Ahead to December 8 Runoff

With Georgescu now leading and a fiercely contested race for second place, Romania’s presidential election remains in flux. With the potential for significant policy shifts, the December 8 runoff will be watched closely as a reflection of broader European trends toward populism and far-right politics.

Areas in Poland, the Czech Republic, and Romania were hit hardest, with schools, hospitals, and homes damaged. Authorities brace for more flooding as rain continues, impacting cities like Wroclaw and Budapest.

Heavy rains over the past week have caused widespread destruction, particularly in border areas between Poland and the Czech Republic. Collapsed bridges, evacuations, and power outages have left authorities scrambling for aid and cleanup.

At least 15 people have been killed in the floods, which have affected countries from Austria to Romania. Poland’s government planned to declare a state of disaster, with towns like Klodzko still struggling. Mayor Michal Piszko reported receding waters but said the need for emergency supplies, such as bottled water and dry food, remains high. Schools have been closed, and parts of the city remain without electricity.

In the Czech Republic, floodwaters receded in Jesenik, revealing damaged cars and debris. However, larger cities remain on alert, including Wroclaw, Poland, where officials expect water levels to peak by Wednesday. In Litovel, nearly 70% of the town was submerged, and schools and hospitals were closed.

The floods have also taken a toll in Romania, where towns were submerged, and six people have died. Austria and Hungary remain vigilant as rising rivers threaten major cities like Budapest and Bratislava. Austria is preparing for more rainfall, which could trigger a second wave of flooding in the coming hours.

In total, more than 12,000 people have been evacuated in the Czech Republic, and many towns in Poland, Romania, and Austria are on high alert. With more rain expected, the region is bracing for further damage.

The incident occurred as Khalifa, known for hits like “Black and Yellow,” was seen smoking marijuana onstage. Footage shared on social media captured the rapper casually smoking, followed by his arrest by local authorities.

In response to the incident, Romanian anti-organized crime prosecutors DIICOT issued a press release confirming the details. They stated, “During a concert at the Costinești resort in Constanța county, [Khalifa] was found in possession of over 18 grams of cannabis (a controlled substance) and consumed an additional amount of cannabis onstage.” The press release emphasized Khalifa’s right to due process and the presumption of innocence throughout the legal proceedings.

Marijuana use for recreational purposes is illegal in Romania. Video footage circulated online showed Khalifa being escorted out of the venue by police, though he was later released.

Following his release, Khalifa took to social media to issue a public apology. On X, he wrote, “Last night’s show was amazing. I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big a** j***t next time.”
