Downey Wasn’t the First Choice

Despite his now-iconic portrayal, Robert Downey Jr. wasn’t initially the top pick for the role of Iron Man. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige once revealed that the first offer went to British actor Clive Owen. “When we were casting the role of Iron Man, we looked at many different actors. We had to find the perfect mix of heart, strength, and charisma,” Feige said at an event. “We pinpointed the right guy and extended an offer to our top choice – an actor who checked all of those boxes and who we were confident would be a huge hit. And his name, of course, was Clive Owen. He passed. He was not interested.”

Downey’s Return to the MCU

As fans continue to celebrate Downey’s original audition, they also eagerly anticipate his return to the MCU. However, this time, Downey will be stepping into a new role, taking on the character of Victor von Doom, also known as Dr. Doom, in the next Avengers film. This villainous turn marks a new chapter for the actor within the superhero universe, offering fans a chance to see Downey in a different light, even as they cherish his legacy as Tony Stark.

Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU, coupled with the resurfaced audition clip, has only solidified his place in fans’ hearts as the definitive Iron Man, a role that continues to define his illustrious career.

Robert Downey Jr. to Earn ‘Significantly More’ Than Rs 670 Cr For Marvel Return

July 30, 2024, 11:45 am

Marvel has invested heavily to reunite Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo brothers for the upcoming fifth and sixth Avengers films, titled ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. These announcements were made at the recent San Diego Comic-Con, where both Downey and the Russos appeared together on stage. Downey, who portrayed Tony Stark/Iron Man in the MCU for over a decade, concluded his role with ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and Avengers: Endgame’, both directed by the Russos.

According to a new Variety report, Downey’s sole condition for returning was that the Russos must also be involved. Given their track record and Downey’s stature—now an Oscar-winner for his role in ‘Oppenheimer’—the cost of their return was significant. The Russos are set to receive $80 million for directing the two films, which is approximately Rs 670 crore, plus additional bonuses tied to global box office milestones of $750 million and $1 billion. This figure does not include backend compensation.

Downey, having earned between $400 million and $500 million from Marvel over the years—including four Avengers films, three solo Iron Man movies, and various cameos—has accumulated around Rs 3700 crore. He is expected to earn ‘significantly more’ than the Russos for these upcoming films, where he will play the supervillain Doctor Doom. His deal includes perks such as ‘private jet travel, dedicated security, and an entire trailer encampment’.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige began considering bringing Downey back due to mounting studio problems, including box office struggles and a major revamp following actor Jonathan Majors’ firing. Downey agreed to return only on the condition that the Russos be brought back as well. “They were the only ones he would work with,” a source told Variety.

Filming for the new Avengers movies will start in 2025 in England, moving away from Marvel’s usual Atlanta locations. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled for release in 2026, followed by ‘Secret Wars’ in 2027.

Robert Downey Jr Confirms MCU Return But Not As Iron Man

July 28, 2024, 12:52 pm

Robert Downey Jr is set to make his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this time as the villain Doctor Doom. The actor, known for his iconic portrayal of Iron Man, will take on the role of Dr. Doom in the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday.” Both Robert Downey Jr and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed this exciting news at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. RDJ made a surprise appearance at Hall H during the event, revealing himself as the Fantastic Four antagonist Doctor Doom on stage.

In addition to Downey Jr’s return, Kevin Feige announced that the Russo Brothers, Joe and Anthony Russo, will also be returning to the MCU. The director duo will helm the “Avengers: Doomsday” film and were present at Hall H for the announcement.

“If we’re going to bring Doctor Doom to the screen — he is one of the most complex characters, most entertaining characters in all of fiction,” Anthony Russo stated, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. “If we’re going to do this … then we are going to need the greatest actor in the world.”

“As proof of the unimaginable possibilities of the Marvel Universe, we give you the one person who could play Victor von Doom…” he added before RDJ took center stage and unveiled himself as Doctor Doom.

A video from Comic-Con that went viral shows RDJ in the iconic green Doctor Doom robe and a metal mask. He removed the mask to announce his return, thrilling fans in attendance. “New mask, same task,” he said, confirming his comeback to the MCU. “What can I say, I like playing complicated characters,” he teased.

Robert Downey Jr and the Russo Brothers previously collaborated on “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019).

Robert Downey Jr’s Early Marvel Audition: Doctor Doom Before Iron Man

July 15, 2024, 5:23 pm

Robert Downey Jr, globally renowned for his portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man in Marvel’s cinematic universe, nearly embarked on a different Marvel path before donning the iconic red and gold suit. According to Deadline, marking the 15th anniversary of ‘Iron Man’ (2008), director and co-star Jon Favreau shared an intriguing detail about Downey Jr’s earlier involvement with Marvel.

Favreau recalled, “I remember you had all met with him already for something like Doctor Doom or something on another project.” He noted, “I think he had come through on maybe ‘Fantastic Four’, so everybody sort of knew who he was.” Ultimately, the role of Doctor Doom went to Julian McMahon, known for his roles in ‘Nip/Tuck’ and ‘Charmed’.

Reflecting on casting Downey Jr as Tony Stark, Favreau emphasized his pivotal role in the success of ‘Iron Man‘, stating, “He’s the puzzle piece that made it all work… He had that spark in his eye and he was ready.” Marvel’s Kevin Feige acknowledged the collaboration between Favreau and Downey Jr as instrumental in shaping the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). According to Deadline, Feige remarked, “That tone that you and Robert discovered on that movie… became the template in a way for much of what the MCU became.”

Downey Jr’s portrayal of Tony Stark not only defined his career but also anchored the early success of the MCU, leading to his collaborations with actors like Chris Evans, who played the Human Torch in ‘Fantastic Four’ before becoming Captain America. Over the span of 10 movies, Downey Jr embodied the complex character of Iron Man, culminating in his emotional departure in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019).

Feige confirmed in December that there were no plans to resurrect Iron Man post-‘Endgame’, stating, “We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again.”

As fans reflect on Downey Jr’s transformative role and his impact on Marvel’s cinematic universe, the revelation of his near-casting as Doctor Doom adds another layer to the actor’s storied journey within one of Hollywood’s most beloved franchises.

He emerged victorious over Sterling K Brown (American Fiction), Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon), Ryan Gosling (Barbie), and Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things).
Upon receiving the award, Downey Jr. stated, “I’d like to thank my terrible childhood and the Academy, in that order.”

He then joked, “I’d like to thank my veterinarian– I meant wife — Susan Downey over there. She found me, a snarling rescue pet, and loved me back to life,” as per PEOPLE.

Subsequently, he expressed gratitude towards Christopher Nolan, the director of Oppenheimer, and his fellow cast members.
“I needed this job more than it needed me. Chris knew it…,” he stated, while acknowledging his co-stars Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy and their collaborative experience. “I stand here a better man because of it.”

Downey Jr. also extended gratitude to his stylist and entertainment lawyer, and concluded his speech by acknowledging his children, Avri, Exton, and Indio, as reported by PEOPLE.

‘Oppenheimer’ secured nominations in 13 categories at the 96th Academy Awards.
The biopic directed by Nolan also claimed the Oscar for Best Film Editing.

Previously, Downey Jr. secured the Best Supporting Actor award at the BAFTA Awards 2024, Critics Choice Awards 2024, and the Golden Globe Awards 2024.
In Nolan’s biopic of the titular physicist portrayed by Cillian Murphy, Downey Jr. portrayed the character of Lewis Strauss. Strauss played a pivotal role in the atomic bomb’s development and later emerged as a political adversary of J. Robert Oppenheimer.

The film was helmed by Christopher Nolan.

The biopic, taking place amid World War II, tracks Oppenheimer, renowned as the “Father of the Atomic Bomb,” as he grapples with the realization that testing the atomic bomb could trigger a catastrophic event by igniting the atmosphere and leading to global destruction. Nonetheless, he proceeds to push the button despite this understanding.

RDJ to win at Oscar 2024, assumes Sterling K. Brown

February 4, 2024, 12:35 pm

According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Sterling K. Brown discussed his Oscar 2024 nomination and hinted that he would lose to Robert Downey Jr. while complimenting the actor on his playing abilities. At the 2024 Academy Awards, Mark Ruffalo, Ryan Gosling, Robert De Niro, Sterling K. Brown, and Robert Downey Jr. are vying for best supporting actor.

“Robert Downey Jr. is going to win, and he’s incredibly deserving,” Brown said of the ‘Oppenheimer’ star and his fellow nominee. “He’s an incredible actor. You should give him love. And the fact that I get a chance to be nominated along with him and Mr. [Robert] De Niro and Ryan Gosling and [Mark] Ruffalo, I’m just happy to be in the room.”
The actor, who is up for best-supporting actor for his performance in American Fiction, recently said on The Graham Norton Show, “There’s no losing yet — it’ll happen in its own due time.”

Brown went on to suggest that “Colman [Domingo] will probably win,” and added, “I know I’m not going to win.” Domingo was also a guest on the BBC show, as well as scored a Best Leading Actor Oscar nomination for Rustin.

The ‘This Is Us’ actor said he is “totally fine” if he does not win the trophy at Oscar 2024, despite Graham Norton and the other guests pushing back and assuring him that he still has a good chance of winning.
Last month, Brown stated that he believed the Cord Jefferson-directed film, which was adapted from Percival Everett’s 2001 novel Erasure, “was one of the best scripts I’d ever read.”

“It was able to make fun of an industry and also challenge it to say there are ways in which you could be better,” he said of American Fiction. “You are narrow in terms of Black life that you are willing to portray for mass consumption. I’m going to tell you that, and at the same time, I’m going to give you an idea of other stories that would be viable for mass consumption,” reported The Hollywood Reporter.
