</excerpt>

Mumbai Indians kept themselves in the playoff race for the final after outlasting Gujarat Titans by a six-wicket margin in the Eliminator at Mullanpur on Saturday. Electing to bat first, MI dictated terms from the first ball itself, with Jonny Bairstow the debutant of the franchise for the blockbuster match taking the game by storm with a 47 off just 22 balls. Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, received two let-offs early on in his innings as he was dropped twice before compiling a magnificent 81 off 50 balls, a knock that even drew praise and intrigue from veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who later questioned MI’s consistent run of fortune in high-stakes matches.

Ashwin Recalls Past to Highlight MI’s Fortunes

Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s retired spinner who currently plays for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, made an interesting comment regarding MI’s lucky reprieves during the Eliminator match. The spinner took a cue from his own experience when he faced MI during a 2018 game to make his point.

“Prasidh Krishna was after the Purple Cap. The way he was bowling today, he would’ve gone to another level in the Eliminator. He was clocking 150kph. There was one over where Jonny Bairstow smashed him for 26 runs, but in that over, he tried to get his wicket in 2-3 balls. It was an incisive over, but he couldn’t get the wicket. And after that, the game went for the worse,” Ashwin began.

‘Hand of God’ Behind Rohit’s Brilliance, Says Ashwin

“He dropped a catch. Then, Kusal Mendis dropped a catch off Siraj’s bowling. Then, Rohit was unstoppable. It looked like a hand of god was with Rohit Sharma. He had the luck but he capitalised on the chances.

“I’ve seen one thing against Mumbai Indians, every time. In 2018, I was leading Punjab against MI. They were 80-odd for five wickets in 13 overs. They weren’t anywhere in the game. Suddenly, the floodlights lost current and we had a 20-minute break. And when the game resumed, Kieron Pollard went ballistic and they went to smash around 180-200 runs.”

Ashwin added that MI “always get lucky.” “Of course, you earn your luck. But MI always get lucky. We have to find out how they’re getting so lucky,” said Ashwin.

MI to Face PBKS for Finals Berth

MI are the five-time league champions and the joint-most successful teams together with Chennai Super Kings.

Mumbai Indians take on Punjab Kings for a finals spot in the IPL. Punjab Kings may be low in morale following an 8-wicket defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, but they topped the points table in the league stage with 19 points.

</excerpt>

Ravichandran Ashwin’s popular YouTube channel will no longer preview or review Chennai Super Kings (CSK) games for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The decision comes in the aftermath of stinging criticism over a comment made by a guest on the channel about CSK’s spinner choice.

The row started when Prasanna Agoram, a former South African and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) data analyst, made a guest appearance on the channel. He asked CSK to explain why they had chosen Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad ahead of Indian veterans such as Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

After the outcry, the video was taken off the platform. Although Ashwin did not appear in the incident, fans associated the backlash with him, so the channel posted a clarification.

Admin Issues Official Statement Over Ashwin’s Channel

Ashwin’s YouTube channel admin put out a statement saying that they would be keeping CSK talk off their page from now on.

“Considering the tone of the debates on this forum in the past week, we wish to exercise caution regarding how things are read and have decided to desist from reporting CSK games, previews as well as reviews, for the remainder of this season,” the statement stated.

The note also clarified that guest comments do not reflect Ashwin’s personal opinions.

“We value the diversity of perspectives that come through on our shows and remain committed to ensuring the conversation stays true to the integrity and purpose of the platform we’ve established. The views expressed by our guests do not reflect Ashwin’s personal opinions.”

CSK Coach Reacts: “I Have No Idea”

CSK Coach on the criticism on Ashwin’s Youtube channel: [Press/TOI]

“I have no idea. I didn’t even know he had a youtube channel, so I don’t follow that stuff – That is irrelevant”. pic.twitter.com/UFY4qeHmz5

CSK skipper Stephen Fleming was questioned on the controversy after the team lost to Delhi Capitals recently. He seemed oblivious to the situation.

“I have no idea,” said Fleming. “I didn’t even know he [Ashwin] had a channel, so I don’t follow that stuff. That’s irrelevant.”

Controversy apart, Ashwin’s channel will continue to stream other teams and general IPL content throughout the season.

</excerpt>

But this time off the field, Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has reached still another milestone. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has chosen to rename a street in the city after the famous off-spinner, further enhancing his already impressive cap.

Officially renamed in his honor will be Chennai’s West Mambalam Ramakrishnapuram 1st Street on which Ashwin now lives, according a report by the Times of India. A business belonging to Ashwin, Carrom Ball Event and Marketing Company Private Limited, presented the renaming idea. Originally the plan indicated renaming either Arya Gowda Road or Ramakrishnapuram 1st Street; in the end the GCC formally endorsed the latter.

TDG couldn’t corroborate the accuracy of the TOI report on their own.

Raised in Chennai, Ravichandran Ashwin’s journey from there to great cricket consisted of a distinguished career among India’s greatest wicket-takers in Test match. Ashwin has been a key part of India’s cricketing triumphs known for his creative bowling styles and match-winning games. Though he has retired from world cricket, he stays active in the sport and is scheduled to play for Chennai Super Kings in the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

With a great cricketing record, Ashwin hugely helped Indian cricket. Playing 106 Test games, he secured 537 wickets, therefore rating among India’s highest wicket-takers in that format. Also in limited-overs cricket, he made notable impact by capturing 156 wickets in 116 ODIs and 72 wickets in 65 T20Is.

Beyond his own accomplishments, Ashwin is fiercely committed to developing young gifted children. Working from schools in the Greater Chennai Corporation, he actively coaches young crickets thus helping to shape the cricketing future of the city.

</excerpt>

Ravichandran Ashwin, whose recent retirement surprised the cricketing world and his fans, stated that Hindi is “not our national language but an official language” – a remark that could ignite a debate. He made this comment during the graduation ceremony of a private engineering college in Tamil Nadu, a state where the use of Hindi has historically been a sensitive topic, often provoking strong reactions.

While addressing the students, Ashwin inquired if they would prefer asking questions in Hindi if they were not comfortable speaking in English or Tamil.

“English students in the house – give me a yay,” he called out, receiving a loud cheer in response. “Tamil” – this prompted an even louder roar from the students. “Okay, Hindi?” At this, the audience fell silent. “I thought I should say this. Hindi is not our national language; it is an official language,” Ashwin continued, speaking in Tamil.

Tamil Nadu: Former off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin says, “…I thought I’d say it all. It’s (Hindi) not our national language; It’s an official language. Okay, anyway”

— IANS (@ians_india) January 10, 2025

The comment could spark fresh debate at a time when several opposition parties, including Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK, have accused the Centre of attempting to impose Hindi on states, particularly in the South.

At the same event, Ashwin also addressed the topic of Team India’s captaincy. The veteran off-spinner provided a measured response.

“When someone says I can’t do it, I wake up to accomplish it, but if they say I can, I lose interest,” Ashwin explained.

He also shared insights from his own background as an engineering graduate. Drawing from his experiences, Ashwin urged students to remain steadfast in their journey and to never give up, even during moments of doubt.

“Had any engineering staff told me I couldn’t become captain, I would have worked harder,” he added, motivating the students to stay determined and focused when faced with challenges.

“If you are a student, you will never stop. If you aren’t, learning will cease, and excellence will just be a word in your cupboard,” he said, emphasizing the importance of lifelong learning.

</excerpt>

India’s twin Test series victories in Australia were greatly affected by their robust bowling attack. However, the recent 3-1 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy underscored the disparity between Jasprit Bumrah and the other bowlers. Bumrah was outstanding, claiming 32 wickets in 151. 2 overs at an average of 13. 06 and a strike rate of 28. 4. In comparison, the other Indian pacers—Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, and Nitish Kumar Reddy—secured 40 wickets in 351 overs, averaging 34. 82 with a strike rate of 52. 6.

The heavy dependence on Bumrah and the lack of experience among other pacers have raised issues concerning India’s fast-bowling depth. Former India spinner and chief selector Sunil Joshi conveyed optimism regarding the future of India’s pace attack but pointed out the lack of a left-arm seamer as a missed chance in the series.

“No, because we already have Troy Cooley; he’s been in NCA and is overseeing the fast-bowling group. So, I don’t believe there should be any concern. But certainly, we did miss a left-arm seamer in that lineup,” Joshi expressed in an exclusive conversation with IANS.

“If a left-arm seamer had been present, then there would have been a slight alteration in angles because most of the Australian, English, or New Zealand batters are not particularly comfortable facing the left-arm seamer due to the ball moving away at a different angle.

“We just required variety, but fortunately or unfortunately, both bowlers Yash Dayal and Khaleel Ahmed were available, yet they couldn’t participate, and that’s unfortunate,” he added.

Joshi reminisced about the injury-plagued 2020/21 series in Australia, where net bowlers rose to the occasion, performed admirably, and contributed to victories. He underscored the need for preparation, learning from opponents’ strategies, and maintaining discipline for achieving reliable results.

“It’s all about showcasing character by each individual player who is on the tour to excel. For that, did we prepare thoroughly? I believe yes. Did we take responsibility? Yes. So, now from this tour, from the initial Test match to the second and third matches, did we gain knowledge from the opposition?

“I view it that way because if we learned something from the opposition, then yes, we could have performed better and more consistently. If you haven’t learned, you need to seek to explore that and be disciplined enough to channel that effort into perspective and practice, then achieve a result from it,” he elaborated.

Joshi also highlighted the significance of tactical execution, pointing out how Australia’s Nathan Lyon exhibited patience and consistency, qualities that were lacking in India’s bowling aside from Bumrah.
“Tactically, when things don’t go well, we will face scrutiny. If things go well, we claim that it’s a good tactic employed. We must examine what the opposing team did—such as which tactical maneuvers they executed effectively? For instance, one can analyze their fast bowlers or even Nathan Lyon—he didn’t do much, he simply maintained his patience and consistency. Did we mirror that? No, aside from Bumrah,” he noted.

Joshi also shared his thoughts on the unexpected announcement of Ravichandran Ashwin‘s international retirement following the third Test at Gabba, a match he did not participate in.

“I was genuinely taken aback by that because I am unaware of what occurred or developed during or between the second and third Test matches. However, it’s again Ashwin, who has been very direct about his choices. So, I’m not implying that it was a poor decision.

“I mean, it’s important to respect that, as he has become a modern legend of the sport, and that is undeniable. But again, what led him to make that choice? Therefore, we will need to find out because it was astonishing, and the board, selection committee, and team management ought to provide an explanation for that,” Joshi concluded.

</excerpt>

Jasprit Bumrah continues to break records, surpassing Ravichandran Ashwin’s all-time rating points record in the ICC rankings. Ashwin held the previous record for eight years with a rating of 904, achieved in December 2016, the highest ever by an Indian bowler. Bumrah has now set a new benchmark with 907 rating points, becoming the highest-ranked Indian bowler in history.

Bumrah’s rating is also tied for the 17th highest in the all-time rankings, alongside England’s Derek Underwood. The world’s top-ranked Test bowler, Bumrah delivered another stellar performance in Melbourne, despite India’s heavy loss to Australia. He took 9 wickets in the match, raising his series tally to 30 from four games. Before the Test, Bumrah had matched Ashwin’s rating of 904 points, but his impressive performance in Melbourne propelled him past Ashwin, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket.

Australia’s Pat Cummins, who was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance in the 4th Test, earned 15 additional rating points following his six-wicket haul. Cummins now occupies the third spot in the ICC Test bowler rankings.
He added, “How many wickets you take, how many ever runs you make in 10 years you won’t remember. It’s the memories that matter. If somebody had told me in 2011 that I would be getting so many wickets, I’d be retiring on December 2024, the 18th, I wouldn’t have believed them. This is a game that I love but I never did expect I would get so much love, so many wickets and runs. I am very glad, a deep sense of gratitude for everyone who supported me, that’s challenged me. So happy today, thank you.”

Reflecting on his decision, he said, “I won’t take too much of your time. Today will be the last day for me as an India cricketer. There’s a bit left in me as a cricketer, but I would like to exploit it at the domestic and club-level cricket. I have had a lot of fun, a lot of memories alongside Rohit and several of my other teammates. We’ve lost some of them over the last few years, we’ve been the last bunch of OGs I can say that are left out in the dressing room.”

Rajasthan Royals, focusing on nurturing young talent like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, and Dhruv Jurel, decided not to retain Ashwin or Yuzvendra Chahal for the upcoming season.

There had been significant speculation about Ashwin’s possible return to CSK, with reports suggesting the franchise’s interest in bringing him back. This move would reunite Ashwin with MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja for the first time since 2015, further fueling the rumors.

Ashwin, a 38-year-old veteran and also a YouTuber, had earlier contributed to the speculation by playfully auctioning himself to CSK in a mock auction on his channel. With a wealth of experience, Ashwin’s extensive all-round skill set continues to impress, helping him maintain his successful IPL career.

In his 211 IPL matches, Ashwin has taken 180 wickets and scored 800 runs. His IPL journey began in 2008 with CSK, where he initially had limited opportunities. However, in the 2010 season, he made his mark, and his standout performances contributed to CSK’s IPL victories in both 2010 and 2011. After spending six seasons with CSK, Ashwin moved to Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016 due to CSK’s two-year ban. Since then, he has played for Punjab Kings, briefly captaining them, and for Rajasthan Royals. Now, Ashwin returns to CSK, bringing his wealth of experience back to the franchise.

</excerpt>

Ravichandran Ashwin not only showcased his bowling skills but also set an impressive standard in fielding on Day 2 of the third Test between India and New Zealand at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. As Daryl Mitchell and Will Young built a 50-run partnership, Ashwin delivered a moment of brilliance by taking a spectacular catch. Although not typically known for his speed in the outfield, Ashwin sprinted from mid-on to execute a remarkable catch.

Mitchell had hit a delivery from Ravindra Jadeja high into the air, making it challenging for Ashwin to secure the catch, but he managed to run back and dive, successfully holding onto the ball. Many fans took to social media, declaring it as the greatest catch of Ashwin’s career.

“I was just telling myself that it’s going to anyway leave me, I wanted to get as close to the ball as possible and I’ve got great hands, so I trusted my hands to go through with it,” Ashwin reflected on his achievement after Day 2 concluded.

At 38 years old, Ashwin’s sprint and diving catch drew admiration from the enthusiastic crowd at Wankhede. This dismissal marked the beginning of New Zealand’s collapse, as they lost their next five wickets for just 77 runs. From a promising 94/3, New Zealand ended Day 2 struggling at 171/9, with a lead of only 143 runs. Ravindra Jadeja starred with four wickets, increasing his match total to nine, while Ashwin contributed three wickets.

A highlight of Ashwin’s bowling was his dismissal of Glenn Phillips, who had hit him for two sixes in the first three balls of an over. However, Ashwin struck back, bowling him out with a stunning carrom ball shortly after.

</excerpt>

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin gave a rather unorthodox take on the retention policy for Chennai Super Kings ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Here, he proposed that Chennai Super Kings retain the multi-time champion skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni as one of their five main retentions as a capped player instead of an uncapped player. He chose one different uncapped player as one of the main retentions instead of Dhoni while discussing player retentions on his YouTube channel.

“If you say Mumbai Indians can retain six players, why cannot CSK? We have Ruturaj (Gaikwad), Jadeja (Ravindra Jadeja), (Matheesha) Pathirana, (Shivam) Dube, MS Dhoni and Sameer Rizvi,” Ashwin stated.

“Just being a devil’s advocate,” he added playfully.

Former South African performance analyst Prasanna Raman, going under the sobriquet ‘PDogg’, didn’t agree with Ashwin. “I don’t think you should retain Sameer Rizvi for Rs 4 cr. I don’t even know whether he would agree to play for Rs 4 cr,” said Raman.

Rizvi was purchased for a handsome Rs 8.4 crore ahead of the IPL 2024 and could not really do much; he could manage just 51 runs in eight games with a strike rate of 118. Still, Ashwin seemed optimistic about Rizvi too, praising his aggressive show in the UP T20 League and hinting there are plenty of such cricketers around, which should not let his price go sky-high.

“He has been showing a show every day. He’s playing on a different level, single-handedly in the UP T20. There is a huge upside with him. He will fall into the same bracket as Shahrukh Khan, Abhinav Manohar and Dhruv Jurel”, Ashwin asserted.

IPL Governing Council’s decision to reinstate a rule that states that Indian players who haven’t played internationally for five or more years can be retained as ‘uncapped’ can work to CSK’s benefit in retaining five-time IPL-winning captain Dhoni for just Rs 4 crore. Ideas by Ashwin may help bolster CSK’s Indian core. Ashwin has played for CSK between 2008 and 2015 when he won two IPL titles during his time.

</excerpt>

Indian star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin added yet another remarkable feat to his name on Friday by becoming the highest wicket-taker in Tests played in Asia. Ashwin achieved this on the first day of the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur by sending Najmul Hossain Shanto back to the pavilion for 31 runs off 57 balls in the 29th over. On 420 wickets in Asia, Ashwin goes past Anil Kumble who had 419 on the list. Third is there Harbhajan Singh with 300 wickets in the region. Ashwin made his Test cricket debut against the West Indies in 2011 and has picked up 522 wickets in 101 matches and 191 innings thus far.

India, leading the two-match Test series 1-0, obliged with a commanding 280-run victory in Chennai.

In the day’s play, India won the toss and decided to bowl first in this match. Zakir Hasan (0) and Shadman Islam (24), Bangladesh’s opening pair, could not at all have a great start as Indian pacer Akash Deep sent both of them back pretty soon. Mominul Haque (40*) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (31) took the team to 74/2 at the first session of play today.

The rain did not let the second session complete, and it delayed the game for a little while. Ashwin was the one who could break the hockey session as he picked up Bangladesh’s skipper at over no. 29. At stumps, Bangladesh was at 107/3 with Mominul Haque (40*) and Mushfiqur Rahim (6*) still in the pavilion after only 35 overs were played due to the weather.

Bangladesh Playing XI

Shadman Islam, Zakir Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto (C), Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das (WK), Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Khaled Ahmed.

India Playing XI

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (WK), KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.

</excerpt>

India’s all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin commended newly-appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir for his “relaxed” approach, which has fostered a lively atmosphere in the dressing room. Ashwin praised the former India opener, expressing confidence that Gambhir would be well-liked by the current squad and future players.

Ashwin’s comments on his YouTube channel followed his first experience working with Gambhir during the Chennai Test against Bangladesh. The star spinner had a remarkable performance in his hometown, scoring a century in the first innings and taking six wickets in the second, leading India to a resounding 280-run win.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin contrasted the coaching styles of Gambhir and his predecessor, Rahul Dravid, while appreciating the effectiveness of both. “I think he is very relaxed. I want to call him ‘relaxed rancho’. There’s no pressure at all. In the morning, there will be a team huddle. He is very relaxed about that as well. He will be like ‘are you coming, please come’. It’s like that,” Ashwin said.

He also highlighted Dravid’s more structured approach: “With Rahul bhai, as soon as we come, he wanted things in order: even a bottle should be kept at a particular place at a particular time. He is very regimented. He wanted things in order.”

In contrast, Ashwin noted Gambhir’s more flexible attitude: “With Gambhir, he doesn’t expect all that. He has a relaxed order. He will be a people’s man. He will capture everybody’s heart. I think he will be loved by the boys.”

Ashwin also lauded captain Rohit Sharma’s leadership, stating, “Also, Rohit is a very good leader who works well with everybody. Even when he is leading the side, we can see that. He is very calm and composed as a leader.”

Gambhir stepped in as Team India’s head coach after Rahul Dravid’s tenure concluded following India’s T20 World Cup victory. Dravid chose not to reapply for the position, and the BCCI appointed Gambhir as his successor in June. Gambhir’s debut assignment saw mixed outcomes, with India winning the T20I series but losing the ODI series in Sri Lanka.

The Chennai Test, the first of India’s 10-match run for the upcoming season, gave Gambhir and his coaching staff a much-needed confidence boost. Ashwin’s standout performance, along with Ravindra Jadeja’s resilient 86 in the first innings, helped India recover from a shaky 144 for 6 to post a commanding 376, thanks to their 199-run partnership.

India continued their dominance with Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional bowling, dismissing Bangladesh for 149. In the second innings, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill, both returning to the team, scored centuries, further cementing India’s position.

Ashwin’s praise for Gambhir, combined with the positive outcomes from the Chennai Test, signals a promising start to India’s upcoming season.

</excerpt>

Veteran Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin recently launched the anthem for his Global Chess League (GCL) team, the American Gambits, promising a bold and fearless approach to the game. The anthem, titled “Make The World Go”, was composed by Charan Raj and sung by KC of Pineapple Express, according to a press release. Ashwin, a co-owner of the team, shared the anthem online, symbolizing the team’s unity, intensity, and strategic depth as they aim to excel on the global chess stage.

Ashwin co-owns the American Gambits alongside entrepreneur Prachura PP and former Prestige Group CEO Venkat K Narayana. The team is captained by world number two Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura. Commenting on the anthem’s launch, Ashwin remarked: “For us, chess is about showcasing the best on the board—fueled by passion, guided by strategic thinking, and perfectly playing the role of a gambit. Our goal is to popularize and promote chess both in India and globally. The anthem captures the spirit of fearlessness and ultimate triumph. We are eager to demonstrate how boldly we will play.”

Nakamura, who recently secured third place in the Speed Chess Championship, leads a team comprised of world champions and promising talents. Jan-Krzysztof Duda brings a dynamic, aggressive style, while Vladislav Artemiev contributes a calm, calculated approach. Women’s world rapid champion Bibisara Assaubayeva adds a competitive edge, with veteran Elisabeth Paehtz providing valuable experience. The team also includes young prodigy Jonas Buhl Bjerre, with guidance from coach RB Ramesh, a Dronacharya Awardee.

Nakamura shared his thoughts on the team’s preparation: “Chess isn’t just about moving pieces—it’s about precision, timing, and fearlessness in the face of overwhelming odds. This season, we are ready to push boundaries and make bold sacrifices to achieve victory. The anthem represents everything we stand for.”

The Global Chess League, a collaboration between Tech Mahindra and FIDE, will be held from October 3 to 12 in London.

In the third Test against England, Ashwin dismissed Zak Crawley for his 500th wicket in his 98th match, joining the elite club of nine bowlers accomplishing this feat. He is the third off-spinner after Muthiah Muralitharan and Nathan Lyon to achieve this milestone.

Ashwin took to Instagram on Sunday to extend his thanks to those who contributed significantly to his achievement. He reflected, “Success is the sum total of all those people who teach you the right lessons, who teach you the harsh lessons and luck. Luck plays a pivotal role in everyone’s lives, but I believe we make our own luck.”

He credited his parents, family, and friends as the driving force behind his fortune, stating, “My vehicle to luck has been the strong pillars at home my parents (Ravichandran & Chitra) wife @prithinarayanan, kids, and friends.” He also mentioned specific individuals such as Anil Kumble and others who played a role in his success.

India has levelled 1-1 in the five-match series.
Ben Stokes, the captain of England, and Ben Foakes, the wicketkeeper-batter, joined the team at 194/6 to begin the second session.
England crossed the 200-run threshold in 46.1 overs thanks to a boundary from Foakes to Bumrah.

However, tragedy befell England before they could form a significant alliance. With just 11 runs in 29 balls, captain Stokes was out because to some careless running between the wickets. With the amazing performance of Shreyas Iyer, India managed to remove England’s crisis player and cut them down to 220/7.

With a first-class batting average of over 28, Tom Hartley was the next player to join Foakes, and England needed something special and encouraging from the young spinner.
Hartley, who had earlier frustrated the Indian hitters, now agitated the Indian spinners with sporadic powerful shots.
In 59.5 overs, England reached the 250-run threshold.
After just 63 balls, Foakes and Hartley had shared a half-century partnership, giving England some breathing room.
During the next anxious few overs, Foakes threw his wicket with a cheap dismissal, and Jasprit Bumrah took his second wicket after Hartley narrowly avoided a leg-before-wicket call off a delivery from Ravichandran Ashwin.

Foakes scored four boundaries and a six before being out for 36 in 69 balls. England had two wickets remaining at 275/8, 124 runs short of victory.

After being caught behind by KS Bharat, pacer Mukesh Kumar removed rookie Shoaib Bashir for an eight-ball duck. England had one wicket remaining at 281/9, 118 runs short of victory. James Anderson had joined Hartley, and now everything depended on him.
Taking the last wicket, Bumrah dismissed Hartley for 36. England lost by 106 runs after being bowled out for 292.

Ashwin (3/72) and Bumrah (3/46) were India’s best bowlers. Each of Axar Patel, Mukesh, and Kuldeep Yadav took a wicket.

England’s strong attempt to chase 399 runs in the second Test was thwarted by the skill of Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav, who reduced them to 194/6 at the close of the morning session on day four at Visakhapatnam on Monday. Earlier, Zak Crawley launched a strong counterattack.
England was 194/6 at lunchtime, led by captain Ben Stokes (0*), who was undefeated.

With Zak Crawley (29*) and Rehan Ahmed (9*) undefeated, England began the fourth day of play at 67/1 and needed to chase 399 runs to win.
England continued to play aggressively, with Crawley hitting two spectacular fours from Jasprit Bumrah and Rehan taking aim at spinner Axar Patel.

But Axar quickly turned the tide for India, dismissing Rehan for 23 off 21 balls and five fours. England had a 95/2 score.
The next person on the crease was Ollie Pope.
In 22.1 overs, England scored 100 runs, thanks to a double by Crawley.
Crawley and Pope continued to punish bowlers, striking a hat-trick of boundaries off of Axar. With seven fours and a six, Crawley also reached his half-century in 83 balls.
Once again, spinner Ravichandran Ashwin caused concern in the English camp by getting Ollie caught by captain Rohit at slips for 23 and taking out Joe Root for 16 in 10 deliveries. Root took another poor shot, which Axar stopped. England finished 31 overs at 154/4.

Jonny Bairstow was next up on the crease. Crawley was punishing bowlers as usual and along with Bairstow seemed to bring England back on track and towards the 200-run mark.
However, Kuldeep Yadav changed the game, trapping Crawley leg-before wicket for 73 in 132 balls, with eight fours and a six. In the next over, Bairstow was removed for 26 in 36 balls by Bumrah with another lbw. England sunk to 194/6 at the end of the first session.
Brief Scores: India: 396 and 255 (Shubman Gill 104, Axar Patel 45, Tom Hartley 4/77) beats England: 253 and 292 (Zak Crawley 73, Tom Hartley 36, Jasprit Bumrah 3/46).

Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Ashwin hailed Iyer as a standout performer for the Indian cricket team. He expressed admiration for Iyer’s pursuit of excellence, particularly in taking on spinners. Ashwin noted that despite Iyer’s unique and successful approach, some people tend to discourage him from employing such techniques.

Ashwin highlighted Iyer’s commitment to mastering the pull shot and commended the batter’s ability to hit fast bowlers over mid-off, a trait Ashwin considers a sign of a developing champion batter for India. In the recent ODI World Cup, Shreyas Iyer showcased his batting prowess by scoring 530 runs in 11 matches, including two consecutive centuries and three fifties. The Mumbai-born player has been a consistent performer across formats, accumulating 1043 runs in T20s, 2331 runs in ODIs, and 666 runs in Test cricket. Ashwin’s praise reflects the acknowledgement of Iyer’s valuable contributions to the Indian cricket team.

</excerpt>

Indian players as well as Australian players saw some major ICC ranking changes after the end of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday announced the latest rankings.

Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was named Player of the Series for his 25 wickets at an average of 17.28, and that helped the 36-year-old regain sole ownership of the No. 1 spot for Test bowlers ahead of England seamer, James Anderson. After the series, there is a ten-point difference in the top two positions. Ashwin is leading the charts with 869 points, while Anderson holds the second position with 859 points. Teammate Virat Kohli was the big mover on the Test batter charts following his drought-breaking century during the fourth Test of the series in Ahmedabad, with the former India skipper jumping seven places to 13th overall.

Kohli broke a 1205-day drought without a Test century when he hit a superb 186 in the drawn final match of the series, with the right-hander now on the heels of teammates Rishabh Pant (ninth) and Rohit Sharma (10th) as India players ahead of him on the Test batter rankings.

Axar Patel’s good series with the bat did not go unnoticed, with the left-hander moving up eight places to 44th on the list for batters and jumping one place to fourth overall on the list for all-rounders following an impressive 264 runs over the four matches.

Australia players also made eye-catching moves, with experienced opener Usman Khawaja improving two spots to seventh on the Test batter rankings following a series-high 333 runs and emerging all-rounder Cameron Green jumping 11 places to 26th on the list for batters after he scored his maiden Test century in the fourth Test.

Travis Head’s topsy-turvy series ended well, with the left-handed, recently turned opener maintaining his fifth place on the rankings for Test batters at a new career high of 853 rating points. Some other movements on the list for Test batters also came into the limelight following the first match of Sri Lanka’s series in New Zealand and the completion of South Africa’s home series against the West Indies.

New Zealand captain Tim Southee rises six places to 12th on the list for Test bowlers following a seven-wicket haul for the match against Sri Lanka in Christchurch, while teammate Daryl Mitchell improves four places to eighth on the Test batter rankings after scores of 102 and 81 against the island nation.

There was a boon for South Africa’s group of stars following their series sweep over the West Indies, with new captain Temba Bavuma rising 14 places to 15th overall on the list for Test batters and teammate Aiden Markram improving 11 spots to 22nd.

ADELAIDE: While the rivalry of the Test series between India and Australia this time was built around their pace attacks, both Nathan Lyon and Ravichandran Ashwin were also expected to dazzle and play important roles for their respective teams. Lyon and Ashwin are premier off-spinners in Test cricket and both have over 350 wickets respectively.

Lyon on Wednesday said he cannot compare himself to Ashwin as they are different bowlers with some similarities. He added that he tries to learn from Ashwin when he tours India.

“I think Ashwin is a world class bowler. I have watched him a lot especially when I have gone over to tour India and the subcontinent to try and learn from him. But he is a very cagey bowler.”
