Near Marriages and Reflections

In a 2011 interview with CNN, the industrialist disclosed that he came close to marriage four times, each time stepping back out of fear. He stated, “I came seriously close to getting married four times and each time I backed off in fear or for one reason or another. Each occasion was different, but in hindsight when I look at the people involved; it wasn’t a bad thing what I did. I think it may have been more complex had the marriage taken place.” He acknowledged that he had “seriously” fallen in love four times throughout his life.

A Relationship Across Borders

During one of those instances, Tata revealed he had been in a relationship with an American woman he met while working in the United States. He recalled, “I was probably the most serious when I was working in the US, and the only reason we didn’t get married was that I came back to India and she was to follow me. That was the year of the Indo-Chinese conflict. This conflict in the snowy, uninhabited part of the Himalayas was seen in the United States as a major war between India and China, and so she didn’t come and finally got married in the US thereafter.” He returned to India in 1962 due to his grandmother’s illness.

His Take On Being Single

In a conversation with TV host Simi Grewal, Tata expressed his feelings about being single throughout his life. When Grewal asked, “What motivates you without a wife, without children, without family?” he responded, “I don’t know what motivates me but let me just stay with that for a minute. There are many times I feel lonely at not having a wife or family and sometimes, I long for it. But sometimes, I enjoy the freedom of not having to worry about the feelings of someone else or the concerns of someone else.”

</excerpt>

In 2013, Ratan Tata disclosed that during his initial days at Harvard University, he felt “confused” and “humiliated” as a new student, anxiously “crossing out day by day” on his calendar, yearning to return to the “normal world.”

Tata Recounts Early Harvard Days

Reflecting on his early weeks at Harvard, Tata recounted the overwhelming experience of attending the prestigious institution. “It was the only time in my life where I sat and crossed out day by day how many days were left before I could return to the normal world,” he shared.

Tata participated in the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School (HBS) in 1975. He was invited to speak at the dedication ceremony for Tata Hall in Boston, named in his honor.

Tata Hall, a seven-story building made of glass and limestone, offers residential and educational space for HBS’s executive education program. He described his first weeks at Harvard as “confusing,” admitting he felt “humiliated” by the remarkable accomplishments of his peers, according to a report from the Harvard Gazette.

“But what it did do for me, as I soon found out, was that the confusion sort of disappeared, and I understood the magnitude of what I had learned in a manner that I believe is not possible to do in places other than at this Business School,” he explained. Looking back, he stated, “As I look back, those 13 weeks were probably the most important 13 weeks of my life. They transformed me and my perspective.”

As an architect, Tata envisioned Tata Hall to be warm and welcoming to guests and as open and transparent as possible. “Can the building touch the ground lightly?” he had asked the building’s architect.

In 2010, Tata Companies, along with the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Tata Education and Development Trust, contributed $50 million to HBS. Construction of the building commenced in December 2011. Tata Hall features 179 bedrooms, two classrooms with 99 seats each, three gathering areas, and conference rooms for over 9,000 students engaged in the prestigious Business School’s executive education program annually.

Harvard’s dean, Nitin Nohria, remarked, “Although our School has welcomed international students since its very first class in 1908, Tata Hall represents by far the most significant gift made by an international alum.”

</excerpt>

Renowned industrialist Ratan Tata passed away on October 9 at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital at the age of 86. Celebrated for his visionary leadership and strong commitment to social responsibility, Ratan Tata not only transformed the Tata Group into a global powerhouse but also positively impacted millions of lives. The Maharashtra government will honor him with a state funeral.

On Thursday morning, Tata’s body was transported from his residence in a hearse adorned with white flowers to the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in south Mumbai, where it will be available for the public to pay their last respects. His final rites are scheduled to take place at the Worli Crematorium.

According to a statement from Tata Trust, the last journey for Ratan Tata’s mortal remains will commence at 4 PM today.

Changing Traditions in the Parsi Community

Tata’s funeral reflects a significant shift in the Parsi community’s traditions, as an increasing number of members are choosing cremation over the traditional practice of placing remains in the Tower of Silence, or Doongerwadi, located on Malabar Hill.

Ratan Tata was not only a notable figure in the business sector but also within the Parsi community. As a follower of Zoroastrianism, one of India’s smallest yet most influential religious minorities, Tata was highly regarded. Several prominent Parsi publications expressed their condolences upon his death, acknowledging his generous contributions to the community. “Ratan Tata has been a generous supporter of the Zoroastrian Return to Roots Program and has kindly met with us on a few occasions. He is a great role model for young Zarathushtis to be humble and philanthropic,” noted a post from the Zororoots Instagram account.

Parsi Khabar stated that “Ratan Tata personified the enduring values of his Parsi heritage and Zoroastrian teachings, creating a legacy of kindness, integrity, and inspiration that will last for generations.”

Traditionally, Zoroastrians practiced “sky burial,” where the deceased were placed in a Tower of Silence (Dakhma) and exposed to natural elements and scavenging birds, primarily vultures. However, due to the declining vulture population in India, a growing number of Parsi community members are now opting for cremation.

As reported by the Free Press Journal, the Prayer Hall at the Worli municipal crematorium offers a facility for the death rites of Parsi-Zoroastrians who prefer cremation over interment in the Tower of Silence. A 2024 report indicated that prior to the establishment of the Prayer Hall, only 7 to 8% of funerals among Parsis in Mumbai involved cremation. Currently, that number has risen to between 15 to 20%, despite the opposition from orthodox Parsis regarding cremation practices.

Ratan Tata’s Funeral Arrangements

On Thursday, Tata’s mortal remains were taken from the hospital in an ambulance, escorted by police vehicles, and brought to his residence in Colaba. His remains will be open for public viewing at the NCPA on Thursday from 10 AM to 3:30 PM.

At 4 PM, his body will be transported to the Worli Crematorium for the last rites. To honor Ratan Tata, the Maharashtra government has announced a day of mourning on Thursday. Notably, the last rites of Cyrus Mistry, another prominent Parsi figure, were also conducted at the Worli Crematorium in 2022.

Ratan Tata, a visionary industrialist, was instrumental in transforming Tata Group into one of India’s largest and most influential business conglomerates.

N Chandrasekaran’s Tribute to Ratan Tata

In a heartfelt statement, N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, expressed deep sorrow at the loss of Ratan Tata. He acknowledged Tata’s immense contributions to both the group and the nation.

“It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation,” Chandrasekaran said.

Tata Group Stocks’ Performance

Tata Group companies have performed well in 2024, with their combined market capitalization growing by 15.4 percent since June. This growth has been driven by the strong results of major companies within the group, such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Tata Motors.

Analysts have pointed out that Tata Group stocks offer investors diversification across multiple sectors, regular dividend payouts, and long-term capital growth. Following Ratan Tata’s passing, investors will be keenly observing the group’s succession plans, as it could have a significant impact on the company’s performance in the Indian stock market.

TCS Q2 FY25 Earnings

Meanwhile, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is preparing to release its earnings for the quarter ending September 30, 2024. The company has notified the market through an exchange filing.

“A Meeting of the Board of Directors of Tata Communications Limited (‘the Company’) is scheduled to be held on Thursday, October 17, 2024, to consider, approve, and take on record the Unaudited Standalone and Consolidated Financial Results, along with the Limited Review Reports of Statutory Auditors for the quarter and half-year ended September 30, 2024,” the filing stated.

Ahead of the earnings announcement, TCS shares closed 0.13 percent higher on October 9, ending at ₹4,258 per share on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).

Tata Technologies IPO

In addition, Tata Technologies, one of the most anticipated IPOs of 2023, recently made a remarkable debut on the Indian stock market. Tata Technologies’ initial public offering (IPO), launched in November 2023, was Tata Group’s first IPO in over 19 years and secured the third-highest listing gains in India’s capital market history.

On November 30, 2023, Tata Technologies’ shares were listed at ₹1,200 and closed at ₹1,328 on the NSE, representing a 140 percent premium over the IPO price. The offering, which included an offer-for-sale (OFS) of 6.08 crore shares by Tata Motors, Alpha TC Holdings, and Tata Capital Growth Fund 1, was highly successful, with the IPO oversubscribed by 69.43 times, attracting over 73.38 lakh applications from both retail and institutional investors.

And Ratan’s life and work have had much to do with our being in this position. Hence, his mentorship and guidance at this point in time would have been invaluable. With him gone, all we can do is to commit to emulating his example. Because he was a businessman for whom financial wealth and success was most useful when it was put to the service of the global community. Goodbye and Godspeed, Mr. T You will not be forgotten.
