Rashid Khan Becomes Third-Fastest to 150 IPL Wickets

March 26, 2025, 1:41 pm

Afghan leg-spinner Rashid Khan has added another milestone to his illustrious career by becoming the third-fastest bowler to claim 150 wickets in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He achieved this feat in just 122 matches, surpassing Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who reached the landmark in 124 matches. The only two bowlers ahead of him in this elite list are Yuzvendra Chahal (118 matches) and Lasith Malinga (105 matches). This achievement further cements Rashid’s reputation as one of the most impactful bowlers in T20 cricket.

A Remarkable IPL Journey for Rashid Khan

Rashid made his IPL debut in 2017, quickly establishing himself as a top-tier spinner. His variations, especially his deceptive googly, made him a nightmare for batsmen across teams. He has consistently delivered match-winning performances, contributing significantly to his teams’ successes. Over the years, he has played a crucial role in multiple campaigns, with his ability to take wickets at crucial junctures and maintain an exceptional economy rate.

Apart from being a key bowler, Rashid has also evolved into a handy lower-order batsman. His aggressive cameos with the bat have helped his team in crunch situations, adding another dimension to his game.

Match Highlights and the Historic Wicket

Rashid reached this milestone during a high-scoring match where the opposition posted a formidable total. Though his spell was expensive, he managed to claim a crucial wicket by dismissing a debutant batsman with a well-disguised delivery. The batter mistimed his shot, leading to an easy catch, which marked Rashid’s 150th IPL scalp.

With an economy rate of 6.73 and a bowling average of 22.00, Rashid remains one of the most economical and consistent bowlers in the IPL. His ability to restrict runs while striking at key moments makes him an invaluable asset. As the tournament progresses, his role will be crucial in shaping his team’s campaign.

With several matches ahead, Rashid Khan will look to build on this achievement and continue his dominance as one of the finest T20 bowlers in the world. Fans will eagerly watch how he influences the remainder of the season with his experience and skill.

“We knew they would come hard at us to chase that in 12 overs to get into the semifinal. That’s where we could take advantage,” Rashid elaborated on their bowling tactics. “If we bowled into the stumps, we had a better chance to getting them out.”

June 25, 2024, 6:51 pm

Afghanistan’s cricket team continues to make waves at the T20 World Cup 2024 after a historic victory over Bangladesh, securing their place in the next stage of the tournament. The Blue Tigers, who recently ousted 2023 ODI world champion Australia, maintained their winning streak with an exhilarating 8-run triumph over Bangladesh in a Super-8 match that captivated fans worldwide.

The match, which unfolded with Afghanistan opting to bat after winning the toss, initially saw a slow start as Tanzim Hasan and Taskin Ahmed’s bowling posed challenges for the Afghan openers. Despite a cautious approach, Afghanistan managed only 27 runs in the powerplay, enduring 39 deliveries without a boundary. However, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Usman Ibrahim steadied the innings with a partnership exceeding 50 runs, marking their fourth significant stand in this World Cup.

Gurbaz’s dismissal in the 11th over prompted a struggle for acceleration, but Rashid Khan’s late contributions pushed Afghanistan’s total to 115. Bangladesh’s Rishad Hossain emerged as a formidable force with the ball, claiming 3 wickets in 4 overs at an economy rate of 6.50.

In response, Bangladesh faced a challenging chase under better batting conditions. However, Afghanistan’s bowlers, led by Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq, made significant breakthroughs early on. Rashid Khan further bolstered their attack, dismantling Bangladesh’s middle order with a brilliant 4-wicket haul. Despite a resilient effort from Litton Das, who top-scored for Bangladesh, they fell short by 8 runs.

Naveen-ul-Haq’s exceptional bowling performance earned him the well-deserved title of man of the match for his crucial 4-wicket haul.

The victory against Bangladesh solidifies Afghanistan’s stature in the tournament, proving their ability to defeat formidable opponents and dispelling any notion of their wins being mere upsets. Celebratory reactions, including a viral video featuring Afghanistan’s bowling consultant Dwayne Bravo, have underscored the team’s growing influence and spirit on the global cricket stage.

As Afghanistan advances, cricket enthusiasts await their next challenge in the T20 World Cup with eager anticipation.

2024 T20 World Cup: ‘Proud of Afghanistan’; Indians Applaud Rashid Khan’s Team’s Historic Win

June 25, 2024, 2:02 pm

The 2024 T20 World Cup has delivered yet another shocker. In an unexpected twist, Australia, the 2021 champions, have been ousted following Afghanistan’s historic victory over Bangladesh in the final Super Eight match in Kingstown on Tuesday. Afghanistan, despite posting a modest 115/5, defied expectations with a spirited bowling performance to clinch a dramatic eight-run win via the DLS method, eliminating Australia from the tournament.

Bangladesh lost wickets regularly, but Litton Das kept their hopes alive with a gritty 41-ball fifty. The match was interrupted by rain four times, leading to the DLS method’s involvement. Bangladesh’s target was revised to 114 runs in 19 overs, and with Litton anchoring the chase, they seemed on course.

However, with nine runs needed off nine balls, Afghanistan’s Naveen-Ul-Haq delivered a game-changing over. He bowled Taskin Ahmed and trapped Mustafizur Rahman LBW for a first-ball duck, sealing Afghanistan’s first-ever T20 World Cup semifinal spot and ending Australia’s campaign.

Indian cricket fans rejoiced at Afghanistan’s success, celebrating the team’s long-awaited recognition on the global stage. Social media was flooded with memes and heartfelt messages for Rashid Khan and his teammates, as Indians shared in the pride of Afghanistan’s remarkable achievement.

T20 World Cup: Furious Rashid Khan Threw Bat At His Batting Partner

June 25, 2024, 9:58 am

During the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 Group 1 match between Afghanistan and Bangladesh, Afghanistan’s captain Rashid Khan lost his temper and threw his bat at batting partner Karim Janat following a miscommunication over a second run.

The incident unfolded during the 20th over of Afghanistan’s innings, with the team struggling at 107 for 5. Rashid Khan, known for his aggressive batting style, attempted a helicopter shot off Tanzim Hasan Sakib. Instead of clearing the mid-wicket boundary, he mishit the ball, sending it looping over the covers.

In an effort to capitalize on the confusion among the fielders, Rashid Khan sprinted for a second run. However, Karim Janat, who was already stationed at the striker’s end, decided against it and sent Rashid back. This decision led to a heated exchange as Rashid, frustrated by the missed opportunity, hurled his bat in anger towards Janat, leaving spectators stunned.

Janat tried to calm the situation by approaching Rashid for a discussion, but the captain, visibly upset, walked away without engaging further. The incident highlighted the mounting pressure and stakes of the match, which had both teams vying for a crucial victory in the tournament.

The match, played at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St Vincent, continued amidst the tension, with Afghanistan eventually finishing their innings at a challenging total. The aftermath of Rashid Khan’s outburst is likely to draw attention and discussions within cricketing circles, raising questions about leadership under pressure in high-stakes tournaments.

As Afghanistan and Bangladesh battled for supremacy on the field, Rashid Khan’s moment of frustration has become a focal point, overshadowing the competitive spirit that defines international cricket at the highest level.

T20 WC: “Massive Win for Us,” Says Afghanistan Skipper Rashid After Victory Over Australia

June 23, 2024, 1:13 pm

Following Afghanistan’s 21-run victory over Australia, captain Rashid Khan expressed that the win is significant for their nation and praised the performances of Gulbadin Naib, openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, Mohammed Nabi, and other key players.

Australia was stunned by an inspiring spell from Afghanistan bowlers, led by Gulbadin Naib and Naveen-ul-Haq, securing the 21-run win in the Super 8 clash of the T20 World Cup at Arnos Vale Ground.

After the match, Rashid stated during the post-match presentation, “Massive win for us as a team and as a nation. It is a great feeling. It is something we missed in the last two years. Happy with the win and super proud of the guys. It was quite important for us that we went back with the same playing eleven.”

“We are reading the opposition bowling lineup and selecting eleven accordingly. 140 was a good total on this wicket. We did not finish as well as we should have. The opening partnership gave us the best start. On this wicket, anything 130-plus, we were capable of defending it as long as we kept calm and had the belief. That is the beauty of this team, having allrounders and having options.”

“The way Gulbadin bowled today – the experience he has, it came good today. The way Nabi started – the wicket of (David) Warner – was also pleasing to see. It is so important for us back home and around the world. I am sure they are proud and would have enjoyed the game (the fans),” he concluded.

In the match, Australia won the toss and chose to bowl first. A 118-run partnership between Rahmanullah Gurbaz (60 off 49 balls, with four boundaries and four sixes) and Ibrahim Zadran (51 off 48 balls, with six fours) gave Afghanistan a strong start. However, tight bowling from Australia, including a hat-trick by Pat Cummins (3/28) and a fine spell from Adam Zampa (2/28), restricted Afghanistan to 148/6 in their 20 overs.

During Australia’s run chase, they were reduced to 32/3 at one point, thanks to a fine spell by Naveen ul Haq (3/20). All-rounder Glenn Maxwell (59 off 41 balls, with six fours and three sixes) held his ground, but crucial wickets taken by Gulbadin (4/20) pushed Australia on the back foot. Australia was bowled out for 127 runs in 19.2 overs, marking their first-ever loss to Afghanistan in international cricket.

Naib was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his match-winning spell, which included the wickets of Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, and Cummins.

With this win and one loss, Afghanistan sits third in Group 1, while Australia is second with the same win-loss ratio. Both teams have two points each. If India wins their final Super Eights game against Australia on Monday and Afghanistan defeats Bangladesh by a large margin, the current 50-over and Test champions could be eliminated from the T20 World Cup.

T20 World Cup: India Secures Semi-Final Berth, Australia On The Verge Of Elimination?

June 23, 2024, 10:29 am

In a thrilling T20 World Cup 2024 Group 1 clash, Afghanistan upset Australia by 21 runs at Arnos Vale Ground, Arnos Vale, St Vincent, dealing a severe blow to the 2021 champions’ semi-final hopes. Afghanistan’s victory was powered by Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 60 and Ibhram Zadran’s 51, guiding them to a competitive total of 148/6. Australia faltered in their chase, succumbing to Gulbadin Naib’s stellar bowling performance of 4/20, being bowled out for 127.

With this result, India secured their spot in the semi-finals, topping the group standings. Even a loss to Australia in their next match cannot dislodge India from the top spot unless Afghanistan manages a substantial victory over Bangladesh and surpasses India on net run rate (NRR), provided India loses to Australia.

Australia now faces an uphill battle to qualify, currently second on the points table with one win and one loss. Their final Super 8 league game against India at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia, will be decisive. Afghanistan, on the other hand, faces Bangladesh in their last game, also at Gros Islet, where they are favored to win.

For Australia to reach the semi-finals, they must defeat India and hope Bangladesh defeats Afghanistan. Should Australia lose to India and Afghanistan also lose to Bangladesh, qualification will hinge on NRR.

In the event both Australia and Afghanistan win their matches, NRR will once again decide the second semi-finalist from Group 1. Afghanistan would need a convincing victory over Bangladesh to bolster their chances.

The T20 World Cup 2024 continues to deliver intense action and thrilling scenarios as teams vie for a spot in the semi-finals.

MS Dhoni Hits Helicopter shot On Rashid Khan In GT vs CSK Match

May 11, 2024, 9:38 am

A momentous occasion happened at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad during the Gujarat Titans’ home game when the umpires stopped Shivam Dube to measure the height of a full throw, causing the crowd to quiet down. Not only was it the Titans’ home game, but there was also a lot of buzz about MS Dhoni’s impending arrival. With his supporters fixed on him, Dhoni took the pitch as Dube was given the command to march forward.

The meaning of the game, the postseason race, and the nuances of net run rate all vanished in that instant. One man and his loyal followers were the centre of attention.

For Dhoni, the IPL has become an annual celebration over the past two years. Although fans clamor for him to bat higher in the order, a knee injury limits his ability to wield the bat with full force for more than 15 balls. Against GT, he faced just 11 deliveries, yet managed to strike three towering sixes, each with its own flair.

The first of Dhoni’s sixes was a remarkable one-handed swat to a Mohit Sharma knuckle ball, resonating throughout the stadium. But Dhoni was just warming up. With 53 runs needed, the outcome seemed improbable, yet fans were simply eager to witness Dhoni at the crease for every remaining delivery. He nearly achieved this, facing seven of the last eight balls.

In the final over bowled by Rashid Khan, Dhoni showcased his trademark helicopter shot, dispatching the first two deliveries into the stands. Even when out of position, his exceptional hand-eye coordination compensated, exemplified by a powerful swing with just one hand on the bat handle.

However, the third ball of the over ended in an anti-climax as Dhoni opted to defend, only to be struck on the back leg by a googly. Despite a brief appeal from Rashid, the umpire’s decision stood, confirmed by a review which indicated the ball would have missed the stumps. With three balls remaining, Dhoni’s mere presence continued to captivate the crowd.

Rashid Khan Unhappy with His IPL 2024 Wicket Performance

April 16, 2024, 5:27 pm

Gujarat Titans’ star spinner Rashid Khan expressed his dissatisfaction with his wicket tally in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season but emphasized his contentment with playing pivotal roles contributing to his team’s victories.

Rashid’s performance this season has been below par compared to his usual standards. In six matches, he has secured six wickets with an economy rate of 7.96 and an average of 31.83. Struggling to replicate his typical dominance, Rashid remained wicketless in the opening match against the Mumbai Indians. Despite taking two wickets against the Chennai Super Kings, he conceded 49 runs, the most by any GT bowler in the match. However, he managed to secure a wicket in each of the subsequent four matches.

Reflecting on his challenges this season, Rashid attributed his initial struggles to his return from surgery but expressed satisfaction with his recent performances. He acknowledged the importance of playing supportive roles for the team’s success and pledged to enhance his wicket-taking contributions in the remaining eight matches.

Under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, GT reached two consecutive IPL finals and clinched the title in their debut season. Following Hardik’s departure to the Mumbai Indians, Shubman Gill assumed the captaincy role. Rashid praised Gill’s leadership and commitment to delivering his best both as a batsman and a captain, highlighting his positive influence on team performance.

Despite being in the sixth position with six points and a negative net run rate of 0.637, Rashid expressed confidence in the team’s overall performance, emphasizing their resilience and commendable cricket throughout the season.

GT’s next challenge awaits against the Delhi Capitals at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

Rashid Khan’s late cameo guided GT back to winning ways

April 11, 2024, 11:16 am

Gujarat Titans returned to their winning form in a nail-biting finish, thanks to Rashid Khan’s composed batting, securing victory against Rajasthan Royals on the final ball. Chasing a target of 196 runs, GT achieved their third win of the season with three wickets in hand, while RR faced their first loss.

Shubman Gill’s impressive 72 off 44 balls laid the groundwork for the chase, supported by crucial contributions from Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan in the lower order. Despite a strong start at 64/0 in the 9th over, GT faced a setback, slipping to 111/4 by the 14th over. However, a late surge, including a crucial over where Kuldeep Sen conceded 20 runs, and Rashid Khan’s final-over heroics secured the win for GT.

Reflecting on the game, Gill expressed confidence in the team’s ability to chase down the target, maintaining a positive mindset throughout. He also praised Rashid Khan’s competitiveness and crucial role in the team’s success. During the post-match presentation, Gill responded to commentator Harsha Bhogle’s suggestion that they had left it too late to push for victory, expressing confidence in GT’s ability to turn the game around at any moment.
