NIA releases new photos of Bengaluru’s Rameshwaram Cafe blast suspect

The identy of the suspect who allegedly planted explosives in Bengaluru’s Rameshwaram Cafe remains a mystery and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has realesed new photos of of the man, seeking help from the public in tracing him. The Rameshwaram Cafe explosion case was handed over to the NIA on March 3, the anti-terror agency has asked for the public’s help in identifying the suspect who is thought to have put an IED (improvised explosive device) in the well-known Bengaluru restaurant on March 1.

The primary suspect was seen getting on a bus in CCTV footage about an hour after the explosion at the cafe. The explosion occurred around 12:56 p.m. on March 1. The suspect was seen leaving an IED-containing bag at the cafe while sporting a facemask, cap, and T-shirt.

At approximately 9 p.m. on the same day, another video footage revealed that the suspect was walking near a bus stop. Offering a reward of ₹ 10 lakh for useful information, the NIA has invited people to come forward with any information that could help identify and apprehend the culprit.

The Bengaluru police’s Central Crime Branch and the NIA are working together on the inquiry. Two people have been taken into custody in the explosion case. One of them is a cloth merchant from Kaul Bazaar in the Ballari district and the other is a person connected to the outlawed Popular Front of India (PFI).

The investigation team claims that following the crime, the suspect changed into new clothes and took buses to Tumakuru, Ballari, Bidar, and Bhatkal, among other places. The suspect is shown on CCTV constantly changing his look to avoid being discovered.

The Rameshwaram Cafe reopened with tighter security on Saturday. To ensure the safety of both customers and employees, metal detectors have been placed at the entry, and customers must pass through screening with handheld detectors.

The blast occurred at the cafe in Bengaluru’s Whitefield area on March 1. The cafe, known for its popularity, welcomed customers amid tight security, with long queues forming outside. Before opening, co-founder Raghavendra Rao and staff gathered to sing the National Anthem.

The cafe has undergone renovations to enhance safety. Rao stated, “We are taking all security measures to avoid such incidents in the future. We are strengthening our security team and considering ex-servicemen to train our guards.” He also expressed gratitude to the government for supporting the cafe’s swift reopening.

Regarding the investigation, Rao mentioned, “We have provided all CCTV footage and information to the authorities and are cooperating with them. We are confident that the NIA will soon apprehend the culprit.” The NIA has offered a reward of Rs 10 lakh for information about the bomber and assured the confidentiality of informants’ identities. They released a picture of the bomber from CCTV footage placing a bag in the cafe.

The NIA took over the case on March 3, following a visit to the blast site. The Bengaluru Police had initially registered a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Explosives Substances Act, indicating that an IED device with a timer was used in the explosion.

Bellary Module of ISIS Linked to Rameswaram Cafe Blast – NIA Conducts Intensive Searches in Bellary and Pune

Bengaluru; In a significant breakthrough, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has uncovered compelling evidence linking the Bellary module of ISIS to the Rameswaram cafe blast case in Kundalahalli, Bengaluru. Sources suggest that the prime suspect may be hiding either in Bellary or Pune, prompting extensive searches in these locations by NIA officials.

On December 14, 2023, NIA conducted raids across various places, including Bellary in Karnataka, leading to the arrest of eight individuals who are currently held in different jails across the country. Subsequently, body warrants were obtained for four suspects, and they were interrogated, yielding crucial information about the ISIS Bellary module’s involvement in the attack.

CCTV footage recorded the suspected terrorist boarding a bus to Pune at the Bellary bus stand on the day of the Rameswaram cafe explosion. Investigations are underway to trace his journey from Bellary. Meanwhile, suspicion surrounds Meenaz alias Sulaiman, a detainee from the Bellary on December 14, 2023. NIA officials intensified their interrogation of Sulaiman after obtaining a body warrant, leading to the detention of three suspected terrorists in Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi. Meenaz alias Sulaiman, who was the head of the ISIS Bellary module, Syed Samir of Bellary in Bangalore jail, Anas Iqbal Shaikh in Mumbai jail and Shan Rehman alias Hussain in Delhi jail have been interrogated by the NIA officials.

Meenaz alias Sulaiman, identified as the head of the ISIS Bellary module, played a pivotal role in recruiting and radicalizing poor Muslim youth. Formerly associated with the PFI organization, Meenaz shifted allegiance to ISIS after the ban on PFI in India. The ISIS Bellary module president targeted vulnerable youth, particularly those associated with the PFI, brainwashing them in the name of freedom.

The investigation has unveiled Meenaz’s influence in forming a terrorist organization and his alleged involvement in the escape of one or two individuals who attacked Bellary on December 14, 2023. It is suspected that these escapees may have carried out the Rameswaram Cafe blast under Meenaz’s instructions while he was in jail.

Meenaz alias Sulaiman’s family background reveals his father running a clothing shop in Bellary, with both parents actively engaged in the business. His brother, previously working in Goa, returned after an accident, assisting their father in the shop. Sulaiman’s sister is reportedly pursuing MBBS in Tumkur.

The NIA’s continued efforts aim to dismantle the ISIS Bellary module and bring those responsible for the Rameswaram cafe blast to justice. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to apprehend the prime suspect and ensure the safety of the public.

CCTV Footage Suggest Bomber May Be In North Karnataka; NIA Team Arrive Ballari

Recent CCTV footage has surfaced, a week after the explosion at a well-known restaurant in Bengaluru. It shows the bombing suspect, who has so far managed to avoid capture. A group of NIA officers arrived in Ballari after receiving information that the suspect was travelling to northern Karnataka.

The suspect may have departed Bengaluru following the explosion by bus, as evidenced by CCTV footage showing sightings of the person at Tumakuru and Ballari. This could indicate that the culprit travelled to Kurnool area of Andhra Pradesh. The 350 mile travel is being monitored by investigators to see if anyone saw the suspect, and NIA teams are actively combing these areas, including Uttar Kannada, to try and find the culprit.

It is thought that the suspect—wearing a baseball cap—arrived at the Rameshwaram Cafe via bus route 500D. He entered the restaurant at around 11:34 am and left after nine minutes. While wearing a mask at the cafe, his entire face is visible in video taken inside a public bus, free of sunglasses, a mask, or a cap.

If the suspect changed his appearance while travelling, the NIA is looking into it. At least one person is being questioned by authorities at the place of worship where the baseball cap was allegedly discovered, some 5 km away from the cafe.

On Friday, the public is expected to reopen the Rameshwaram Cafe, and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah may be present. Even though all relevant evidence has been gathered by the police, NIA, National Security Guard (NSG), and forensic experts, the precise spot of the explosion will be guarded while the rest of the restaurant is available to the public.

Bengaluru Prison Radicalisation Case: NIA conducts raids across 7 states

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted searches at 17 locations across seven states in connection with the ongoing investigation into the Bengaluru prison radicalization case. The raids, happening in Bengaluru, Tamil Nadu, and other states, target places linked to suspects involved in the terror conspiracy related to the case.

On January 12, the NIA charged eight individuals, including a life convict and two fugitives, in the Bengaluru Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) Prison radicalization and ‘fidayeen’ (suicide) attack conspiracy case.

T Naseer, serving a life sentence, and others face charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and related acts. Originally registered by the Bengaluru City Police in July 2023, the case involves the seizure of arms and explosives from the accused.

NIA investigations reveal that Naseer radicalised and recruited fellow inmates, including Junaid and Salman, to further LeT activities both inside and outside the prison. Junaid, suspected to have fled abroad, allegedly funded and facilitated terrorist activities, including a planned ‘fidayeen’ attack.

The recent raids come after the Ministry of Home Affairs transferred the investigation of the Rameshwaram Cafe blast to the NIA, which occurred in Bengaluru’s Whitefield area on March 1, injuring several people during lunch hour.

Rameshwaram Cafe Bomb Blast: NIA to take over case

The investigation into the Rameshwaram cafe blast incident in Bengaluru, which rattled the IT capital on Friday, is set to be taken over by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The low-intensity bomb blast at the Whitefield eatery was under scrutiny by the Bengaluru Police and Central Crime Branch, with no arrests made thus far. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has transferred the case to the NIA, and their officials are slated to handle the matter from Monday. Around 10 individuals sustained injuries, and they are presently receiving treatment at various private hospitals, with the Karnataka government assuring responsibility for their medical care.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the blast site, met the injured at the hospital, and presided over a high-level meeting with senior officials, instructing a fair investigation into the case.

The suspect, identified through CCTV footage as a 28 to 30-year-old individual, entered the cafe during lunch, purchased a coupon for Rava idli, and left without consuming the idli, leaving behind a bag containing an improvised explosive device (IED). Bengaluru police released snapshots from the CCTV footage, where the suspect’s face was concealed with a mask and cap.

Raghavendra Rao, the co-founder and CEO of Rameshwaram Cafe, urged both the Union and state governments to ensure preventive measures against such incidents in the future, emphasizing the need for strict action. He dismissed any possibility of business rivalry as a motive, stating that such harmful activities have no place within the business circle.

In contrast, the opposition criticized the Siddaramaiah-led government, alleging concealment of facts related to the bomb blast. Leader of Opposition R Ashoka accused the Congress government of withholding information about the culprits and attempting to manipulate the FSL report, drawing parallels with a previous incident involving slogans of ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ raised in Vidhana Soudha.

Delhi: Police Holds Mock Drill At Connaught Place

Delhi Police held a mock drill at Connaught Place on Sunday. The unclaimed luggage was the subject of the simulated scenario.

The bomb squad, fire department, and Delhi Police crime team arrived to the location after the mock drill.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Kumar Mahla emphasized the routine nature of mock drills in an interview with ANI.

“Mock drills are routine for us. In Delhi, considering the sensitivity, we regularly conduct mock drills at important locations. This was part of our routine, and today’s drill took place at the CP’s theatre. Mock drills follow a standard procedure, with different types prepared according to specific scenarios. Coordination is observed to assess how effectively teams work together, implementing standard procedures. It’s a practice within the mock drill,” Devesh Kumar said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Kumar Mahla addressed security concerns following the bomb in Bangalore by highlighting the city’s heightened importance as the nation’s capital, without going into specifics.

“I won’t comment on this specifically, but in general, due to Delhi being the national capital, sensitivity is at its highest. Whether it’s upcoming elections or being the national capital, we consistently monitor places like cafes, hotels, and restaurants for people’s safety. Increased checks have been implemented at borders, and we’ve deployed our petroleum team to ensure a robust security system,” Devesh Kumar Mahla said.

Initial reports from the blast reported at Bengaluru’s well-known Rameshwaram Cafe outlet in Whitefield on March 1 stated that it left at least four people injured.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Whitefield, confirmed the explosion.

Police teams and fire brigade teams arrived at the scene quickly and were assessing the explosion’s aftermath.

There was Shattered glass and furniture all over the floor of the popular cafe which is a big draw among residents.

Karnataka Police investigated the location of the blast.

This comes after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s statement on Saturday that all relevant details surrounding the Rameshwara Cafe tragedy must be revealed. Senior police officers received explicit instructions from him on how to efficiently use technology during investigations.

CM Siddaramaiah Visits Rameshwaram Cafe Blast Victims

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited injured victims of the Rameshwaram Cafe blast who were being treated in Bengaluru hospitals on Saturday, giving them assurances that their medical costs will be paid for by the government.

“Government will bear the treatment charges of all the patients. Around ten people are injured. Three are here in the Brookfield Hospital and six others are admitted in Vydehi Hospital. I am also going there. The patients are recovering and responding very well to the treatment” Siddaramaiah told reporters.

The chief minister also paid a visit at the well-known eatery in the city’s Whitefield area to the spot where the March 1 Blast occurred.

Dr. Pradeep Kumar, the Medical Director of Brookfield Hospital, said, “We are happy with the overall response of all three patients admitted at our hospital. A patient in the ICU has had a post-operative turbulent period. As a result of her surgery and anesthesia effects, her BP was low and her blood sugar levels were high. Her overall condition is fine and showing signs of improvement… Psychological help to boost their confidence and overcome stress is also being provided to the patients. Other patients will be discharged in another 24-48 hours.”

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai, meanwhile, criticised the Congress over the bomb incident, claiming that leaders of the ruling party assist the anti-national elements.

“From Day one this government has failed in maintaining law and order. Anti-national elements are getting a lot of support from the leaders of the ruling party and the morale of police has gone low. Huge corruption in the transfer of police has brought inefficient people to important positions. All the anti-social elements are now roaming in the city and now they have got the guts to put the bomb in Bengaluru city. This is linked to terrorist elements and there are some sleeper cells in Bengaluru. During our time, we detected 15 of them (sleeper cells) and put them behind bars. Appeasement politics by this govt has led to all this. The case should be handed over to the NIA and if this is not done, this govt should quit,” Bommai said.

Bengaluru cafe blast: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah assures action, urges opposition not to politicize

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah pledged to take appropriate action in response to the blast at Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru, urging the BJP not to politicize the incident. Speaking in Mysuru, Siddaramaiah emphasized the ongoing comprehensive investigation to determine the motives and identify the perpetrators. He stated, “A person wearing a mask and cap came in a bus, fixed the timer and exploded it. The deputy CM and Home Minister visited the spot yesterday. I will also go to the hospital and the spot today.”

Responding to BJP’s accusations of minority appeasement leading to such incidents, Siddaramaiah pointed out past incidents and said, “A bomb exploded in their time too, what did they do when the Mangalore cooker bomb exploded? Was it appeasement even then?” He urged the opposition not to politicize the issue, emphasizing that the Mangalore blast and Bengaluru explosion are unrelated, and that the blast is still under investigation.

Siddaramaiah called for a meeting with senior police officers on Saturday afternoon to discuss the blast incident. State Home Minister G Parameshwara confirmed the meeting, stating, “We have a meeting at 1 pm, the CM will lead the meeting, higher police officers will attend the meeting regarding the blast.”

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar mentioned that seven to eight teams have been formed to probe the blast. “It was a low-intensity blast. A youth came and kept a small bag, which exploded after an hour. About 10 people received injuries. 7-8 teams formed to probe the incident. We are looking from all angles. I ask every Bangalorean not to worry,” he said.

In contrast, BJP leader Tejasvi Surya criticized Siddaramaiah, saying that he should allow agencies to investigate freely and accusing the state government of changing its narrative on the incident. The blast at Rameshwaram Cafe on Friday afternoon left at least 10 people injured.

The Rameshwaram Cafe blast that shook the IT capital of India has found its suspect. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has confirmed that the blast was caused by an IED. The man who carried out the operation has been identified on the CCTV.

The accused ordered an Idli from the cafe but left the cafe without eating after leaving his bag there. The bag reportedly contained the IED with a timer set for an hour. The suspect has been identified as a man of 28 to 30 years of age.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said, “It was a bomb blast with a low intensity or impact. The man had fixed a timer for the blast to happen after one hour.” An officer added that the bag was lying behind a woman sitting along with six other customers.

The BJP hinted at a possible failure of police intelligence as the blast took place at the heart of the city. However, the Karnataka government said, there should be no politics over the incident.

At least nine people were injured in a blast at Bengaluru’s famous Rameshwaram Cafe on Friday afternoon. Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Alok Mohan stated that an investigation has started to find out the cause of the blast in India’s IT capital while those who suffered injuries have been hospitalised.

“The CM and the Home Minister have been given complete information on the incident. Nine people were injured in the incident. An investigation is underway. We will get feedback from the FSL team. We will respond after receiving the report,” he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

A security guard working at the Rameshwaram Cafe who was present at the time of the incident said, “I was standing outside the cafe. Many customers had come to the hotel. Suddenly there was a loud sound and a fire broke out, causing injuries to the customers inside the hotel.”

Expressing concerns over the blast, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha MP from Bengaluru Central PC Mohan asked the state government to find out the root cause of the incident. “Concerned to hear about the mysterious blast at Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru Central Parliamentary Constituency. My thoughts are with the affected individuals and their families. Urging authorities to investigate and ensure the safety of all citizens. Stay safe, Bengaluru,” PC Mohan posted on X.

According to BJP MP from Bengaluru South Tejasvi Surya, the cafe’s founder informed him that the blast took place after a customer left a bag in its premises.

“Just spoke to Rameshwaram Cafe founder Sri Nagaraj about the blast in his restaurant. He informed me that the blast occurred because of a bag that was left by a customer and not any cylinder explosion. One of their employees is injured. It’s seems to be a clear case of bomb blast. Bengaluru demands clear answers from CM Siddaramaiah,” Tejasvi Surya posted on X.

Teams from the fire department and police department reached the explosion scene to assess the damage. Residents noticed broken glass and furniture scattered over the cafe’s floor, drawing their attention. Forensic specialists have gathered the required information and samples from the explosion scene for investigation.
