</excerpt>

Train passengers may have to soon cough up more mon- ey as the Railway Ministry is likely to announce a fare hike, effective July 1. Accord- ing to ministry sources, dis- cussions are underway to increase train fares and an official circular from the Railway Board is expected shortly.

As per the proposed new fare structure, there will be no change in the fares of suburban trains or monthly season tickets, offering re- lief to daily commuters. Similarly, passengers trav- eling in ordinary second- class coaches for distances up to 500 kilometres will not see any fare change.

However, for journeys ex- ceeding 500 kilometres, passengers may have to pay more. In Mail and Express trains (non-AC), the fare is expected to rise by one paisa per kilometre, while passengers traveling in air- conditioned (AC) coaches may have to shell out two paise more per kilometre.

If implemented, this hike will particularly affect long- distance travellers. This would be the third instance of a fare increase during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 11-year tenure. The last fare revision took place in January 2020, and prior to that, in 2014. With more than 25 million people trav- eling by train every day in India, the proposed fare hike is likely to have a wide- spread impact.

As per the Railway ministry, hundreds of trains on Sunday were either delayed or cancelled as severe fog engulfed several Northern Indian states and reduced visibility.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Railways, 335 trains lost punctuality due to weather accounts. Moreover, 88 trains were cancelled, 31 diverted and 33 short-terminated. This has left the passengers upset.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a very dense fog was observed in most parts of Northern India, in many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Western Uttar Pradesh and in isolated pockets over Jammu Division and northwest Rajasthan. Similarly, dense fog was observed in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. Moderate fog was reported in isolated pockets over northwest Madhya Pradesh and Tripura.

It has also been said that due to the continuation of prevailing light winds and high moisture near the surface over Indo-Gangetic plains, dense to very dense fog is very likely to continue in many parts during night & morning hours over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and North Madhya Pradesh during next 24 hours and in isolated pockets after that for subsequent 4 days over the region.

The rail services in London will be crippled for a third day in a row. Train drivers strike on Thursday too with a warning to escalate industrial action unless a pay dispute is resolved. Members of the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) will be on strike leaving London and other major parts of the country with no trains all day.

The biggest disruption is caused to the two busiest airport routes being shut, that is Gatwick Express and Heathrow Express. ASLEF general secretary Mick Whelan stated that further strikes are “inevitable” unless there is some solution to the prolonged issue of pay dispute. He further added, saying union members are demanding to go “harder and faster” after many years of not receiving any pay rise.

On Wednesday, the National Highways traffic officer service workers and Rural Payments Agency staff members maintained their walkouts as the DVSA driving examiners strike began in London. The ASLEF strike is a continuation of the week-long industrial action that has plagued the capital. The first in a series of actions planned by the organization for the month of January was a two-day walkout by London bus employees at Abellio.

The second day of a 48-hour strike by members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) over salary, jobs, and conditions caused more delays for train passengers on Wednesday. After a week of rail travel mayhem, another 48-hour RMT strike will begin on Friday. As tens of thousands of RMT members at Network Rail and 14 train operators went on strike on Wednesday, about half of Britain’s railway lines were shut down, and just a fifth of services were offered.

Paul Nowak the new Trade Union Congress (TUC) leader in a letter to Prime Minister has demanded for an urgent meeting to discuss the wave of industrial disputes. He wrote in his letter: “We can’t solve these problems without a fair deal for the people on the frontline.” Mr. Nowak also wrote, “Unions have already made clear their willingness to sit down with the Government and talk about boosting pay. But while your ministers continue to refuse point blank to discuss improving wages, there can be no resolution.”

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday called for a “reasonable dialogue” with striking unions in a speech in east London.

Fifty-three of 58 coal-laden compartments of an East Central Railways (ECR) goods train derailed on the Gaya-Dhanbad section, forcing the diversion of more than a dozen long-distance passenger trains ahead of Chhath, when tens of thousands of migrant workers return to Bihar and Jharkhand to celebrate the festival.

According to officials, no casualties were immediately reported, and the derailment occurred after the train’s brakes failed and it collided with an electric pole while crossing a hilly area. The train was travelling from Gaya to Koderma.

According to officials, the loco pilot attempted to reduce train speed after noticing brake problems, but due to the steep slope, this was not possible.

ECR chief public relations officer Birendra Kumar said the train derailed at 6.24am. “…due to the accident, movement on both tracks have been disrupted, leading to diversion of passenger trains. Senior railway officials have reached the accident site and are probing the cause of the derailment while efforts are on to put back the derailed coaches on the tracks.”

Kumar said it will take some time before the tracks are cleared. “The primary objective is to restore the train movement to both sides.”

The coal was strewn across the railway tracks, causing damage to several pillars, electrical poles, signal posts, and both tracks.

The train movement on the Howrah-Deen Dayal Upadhyay route was disrupted by the derailment. Some trains have been routed via Sasaram-Ara-Mughalsarai, Gaya-Patna, and Dehri-on-Sone-Chopan-Allahabad, while others have been routed via Mughalsarai-Patna-Jhajha. Due to the detours, passengers will have to travel six to ten hours longer to their destinations.

Indian Railways is developing a real-time tracking system in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). This will provide real-time updates on the trains including the arrival and departure times.

The Railway ministry said, “Real-Time Train Information System (RTIS), developed in collaboration with ISRO, is being installed on the locomotives for automatic acquisition of train movement timing at the stations, including that of arrival & departure or run-through. They get automatically plotted on the control chart of those trains in the Control Office Application (COA) system”

Travellers will now be able to track the timings, location, time or arrival and departure along with the speed of the trains with RTIS. The system will provide mid-section updates within 30 seconds.
RTIS devices have been installed in 2700 trains till now. In phase 2, 6000 more trains will be covered under the RTIS system.

Meanwhile, a senior IRCTC official also told about the success of the newly launched chatbot of the IRCTC. It is getting a remarkable response from the passengers during the beta launch as more than one billion people have used it.
It allows the passengers to book a train ticket without the IRCTC app login, via OTP (One Time Password) with just one click. The new conversational and convenient features enhance the experience of the passengers as it enables the passengers to book tickets via voice, chat and click-based system.

The official further added, “First time, the users can book a ticket without knowing their IRCTC password, it will be possible just with an OTP. AskDISHA 2.0 has also proven to be a very effective instrument and the addition of voice booking will make it even easier for travellers to plan their trips.”
It is estimated that at least 25% of the users will switch to this option in the future.
