</excerpt>

Spanish police have dismantled a massive international cocaine trafficking operation that used high-speed boats to ferry drugs from South America to the Canary Islands. Authorities seized nearly four tonnes of cocaine and arrested 48 individuals in coordinated raids across Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote.

Operation Black Shadow: Global Law Enforcement Collaboration

Dubbed Operation Black Shadow, the multi-national sting involved law enforcement agencies from Spain, the UK, the US, and several South American countries. Spanish Policia Nacional described the network as one of the largest and most sophisticated cocaine smuggling rings ever intercepted in the region.

The gang reportedly used a fleet of 11 “narco boats” to repeatedly shuttle cocaine from Brazil and Colombia across the Atlantic. Europol revealed that these speedboats were launched from strategic Atlantic locations and met with a larger “mother ship” carrying the narcotics. A key element of the operation involved an abandoned wreck at sea, repurposed as a refuelling hub for the boats.

Encrypted Communication and High-Tech Evasion Tactics

Authorities say the criminals employed advanced technology to avoid detection, including encrypted communications, satellite terminals, and untraceable phones with coded language. In total, police searched 29 properties, seized 69 vehicles including boats and jet skis, and recovered cash and firearms.

The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) confirmed that a British national was among those arrested, underscoring the international scope of the network. “Alongside our international partners, we are relentless in our efforts to tackle drug trafficking across borders,” said an NCA spokesperson.

Local Distribution Network Uncovered in Canary Islands

Spanish authorities also uncovered a local distribution network within the Canary Islands, responsible for circulating the cocaine once it arrived from South America.

Video footage released by Spanish police showed armed officers raiding homes and arresting suspects. In a similar December 2024 operation, authorities intercepted a Venezuelan fishing boat carrying 3.3 tonnes of cocaine, which sank while they towed it to shore. Authorities hailed Operation Black Shadow as a major blow to transatlantic drug cartels.

</excerpt>

A train derailment in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, resulted in a chaotic scene as locals rushed to collect diesel leaking from the wreckage. Three wagons of a goods train, which was transporting petroleum products, derailed on Thursday night. Videos from the incident showed a large crowd gathering to scoop up the diesel that had dripped into a nearby drain.

Armed with plastic cans, residents were observed filling buckets, bottles, and cans with the water-mixed diesel from the drain. Some individuals, including women, were seen sitting beside the drain to gather the fuel.

The now-viral video has garnered over 270,000 views on social media, with many commenters expressing that they saw nothing wrong with the locals’ actions.

Responding to the video’s caption, which claimed a “crowd looted diesel from three wagons of a goods train,” several users argued that it shouldn’t be classified as looting since they were merely collecting spilled fuel.

“It’s not a loot… Loot would occur if people took it from the tanker itself. They are collecting it from drains. I don’t think it’s wrong. Plus, they can’t directly use it in their vehicles because of the water mix, I think,” noted one user.

Another commenter added, “To those who speak logically, diesel is very hard to ignite. Hence, it’s only suitable for use in compression engines. To justify it as loot, one must see some kind of tussle. In my opinion, these individuals are simply gathering what is being spilled uncontrollably.”

One comment suggested that the act was, in essence, an effort to prevent environmental degradation. “Doesn’t look like looting. They are preserving nature,” it read.

</excerpt>

Bank of Baroda, leading a consortium of banks, filed a complaint with the CBI alleging that the accused individuals defrauded the banks of Rs 975.08 crore.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Mumbai conducted searches at 12 locations linked to Mandhana Industries Ltd in connection with a money laundering case related to the alleged Rs 975 crore bank loan fraud.

During these searches, the ED froze shares and securities valued at Rs 5 crore, several bank accounts, lockers, and also seized luxury vehicles and expensive watches, as stated by the agency on Thursday.

The ED’s money laundering investigation is based on the FIR registered by the CBI, Mumbai, against Mandhana Industries Ltd (now GB Global Ltd) and its directors Purushottam Mandhana, Manish Mandhana, Biharilal Mandhana, and others.

According to the CBI’s case, Mandhana Industries Ltd and its directors allegedly conspired to cause financial losses to banks and illicitly benefit themselves by diverting loan funds through fraudulent transactions and circular trading. The CBI has not yet filed a chargesheet in this case.

The ED’s investigation uncovered that the directors of Mandhana Industries Ltd created various fictitious entities in the names of company employees to layer funds through the bank accounts of these entities.

Suspicious third-party transactions were conducted to divert funds to the accounts of promoters, directors, and their family members. Bogus purchases were recorded against payments made to different entities providing accommodation entries, according to the ED.

During the search operation, over 140 bank accounts, five lockers, and shares and securities worth Rs 5 crore were discovered and frozen.

Additionally, three high-end cars, including a Lexus and a Mercedes Benz, multiple expensive watches, including Rolex and Hublot brands, numerous digital devices, and several incriminating documents were seized, the agency reported.

The searches also revealed crucial incriminating documents, including numerous property documents, the agency added.

</excerpt>

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted searches at 17 locations across seven states in connection with the ongoing investigation into the Bengaluru prison radicalization case. The raids, happening in Bengaluru, Tamil Nadu, and other states, target places linked to suspects involved in the terror conspiracy related to the case.

On January 12, the NIA charged eight individuals, including a life convict and two fugitives, in the Bengaluru Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) Prison radicalization and ‘fidayeen’ (suicide) attack conspiracy case.

T Naseer, serving a life sentence, and others face charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and related acts. Originally registered by the Bengaluru City Police in July 2023, the case involves the seizure of arms and explosives from the accused.

NIA investigations reveal that Naseer radicalised and recruited fellow inmates, including Junaid and Salman, to further LeT activities both inside and outside the prison. Junaid, suspected to have fled abroad, allegedly funded and facilitated terrorist activities, including a planned ‘fidayeen’ attack.

The recent raids come after the Ministry of Home Affairs transferred the investigation of the Rameshwaram Cafe blast to the NIA, which occurred in Bengaluru’s Whitefield area on March 1, injuring several people during lunch hour.

</excerpt>

In connection with the Coimbatore car bomb blast and the Mangaluru blast cases, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted searches at 41 locations in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka on Wednesday.

The NIA searched 32 locations in Tamil Nadu and Kerala in connection with the explosion that occurred in front of the Sangameshwarar Temple at Eswaran kovil Street in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on October 23, 2022, and eight locations in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka on November 19, 2022, when an IED (Pressure cooker bomb) exploded in a moving auto-rickshaw near bus stop Kankanady in Manguru.

32 locations in the districts of Coimbatore (14), Trichy (1), Nilgiris (2), Tirunelveli (3), Tuticorin (1), Chennai (3), Thiruvannamalai (2), Dindigul (1), Mayiladuthurai (1), Krishnagiri (1), Kanyakumari (1), and Tenkasi (1) of Tamil Nadu, and Ernakulam (1) of Kerala were searched for suspects’ homes based on investigational findings.

The NIA, however, conducts eight such raids in the Tamilnadu districts of Tiruppur (2) and Coimbatore (1), Kerala’s Ernakulam (4), and Karnataka’s Mysuru (1), all related to the Mangaluru bomb investigation.

According to the NIA, additional inquiries into these two cases are ongoing. “Searches conducted today have resulted in the recovery of a huge number of digital devices and cash totaling Rs 4 lakh in the two cases,” the agency added.

The NIA opened an investigation into the bombing of a car carrying explosives in front of the Kottai Eswaran Temple in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu on October 27, 2022.
In the case, which was initially filed by the Tamil Nadu Police on October 23, last year, eleven accused individuals were previously detained by the anti-terror organisation.
According to a statement from the NIA, Jamesha Mubeen, the deceased accused, had plans to carry out a suicide assault and inflict significant damage to the Temple Complex in order to terrorise the neighbourhood after swearing bayath (allegiance) to ISIS.
Investigations have shown that the alleged conspirators met in the deep of Sathyamangalam’s forested Asanoor and Kadambur localities.

The meetings, where they plotted to plan and carry out terrorist activities, were organised by previously detained accused Umar Farook with the assistance of deceased accused Jamesha Mubeen, Mohammed Azharudin, Sheikh Hidayatullah, and Sanofar Ali.
The NIA took over the investigation into the pressure cooker explosion that occurred on November 19 in an autorickshaw in Mangaluru, where a passenger named Mohammed Shariq was carrying a pressure cooker device manufactured from an IED (IED).

Purushottam Poojari, the autorickshaw driver, and passenger Mohammed Shariq, who was carrying an IED fashioned from a pressure cooker, were both hurt in the explosion of the vehicle. The cooker bomb was intended to launch a significant attack to heighten racial tensions in the state and the coastal area. When the explosion occurred, Shariq was travelling to the planned location for the blast.

The NIA started its investigation under the provision of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and investigating officers then questioned the main accused, Shariq, as the state police had found his links with the Islamic State (IS) in its investigation and that he had radicalised his schoolmates, Syed Yasin and Muneer Ahmed, and introduced them to IS as well.
Together, the three of them had experimented with and rehearsed the explosion on the banks of the Tunga River in the Shivamogga district. The practise explosion was also reportedly successful.
According to sources, the main accused, Shariq, had a handler who was orchestrating and instructing him regarding all these activities.

A massive crackdown on the Popular Front of India (PFI) continues, with raids reported in several states. According to reports, raids were carried out in Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Telangana, in addition to Karnataka, where over 70 members are said to have been held.

Here is the most recent information on the PFI raids:

1. In Karnataka, 75 PFI and SDPI workers and leaders “were taken into preventive custody, including the SDPI Yadgiri district president,” according to Alok Kumar, ADGP Law and Order, Bengaluru.

2. “Four persons linked with the PFI have been detained from the Nagarbera area today. Our operation is ongoing in many parts of the district,” Hiren Nath, ADGP (Special Branch) Assam, said.

3. As of now, 36 people have been arrested in Assam. On Tuesday, there were 25 arrests reported.

4. In the most recent update, two arrests were reported from Maharashtra’s Nashik.

5. To date, more than 20 PFI members have been arrested in Maharashtra. The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested another activist on Monday in Nanded, Marathwada.

6. Since September 22, when the National Investigation Agency launched a pan-India operation, the crackdown on the PFI has intensified (NIA).

Following raids on the PFI-SDPI leadership and establishment by the NIA, ED, and police from 13 states, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is meeting with the relevant enforcement and security chiefs to review the evidence gathered and decide on the next course of action. Ajit Doval, the national security advisor, is also present at the meeting.

The raids on PFI-SDPI were carried out after the Intelligence Bureau conducted extensive investigations and data collection in collaboration with the NIA and ED. All state police involved have been working through the night, and the government will make a firm decision on the status of PFI, which claims to be a socio-religious organisation. It is worth noting that the killers involved in the beheadings of innocent people in Udaipur and Amravati had ties to the PFI.

There have been dozens of arrests across the country, with Kerala having the most (22) followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka (20 each), Andhra Pradesh (5), Assam (9), Delhi (3), Madhya Pradesh (4), Puducherry (3), Tamil Nadu (10), Uttar Pradesh (8), and Rajasthan (2).

Persons involved in terror funding, organising training camps, and radicalising people to join proscribed organisations are being searched.

Since intelligence reports indicated that the radical Islamist organisation was being illegally funded by West Asian countries, particularly Qatar, Kuwait, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, the home ministry has focused on the Popular Front of India (PFI) and its political wing, the Socialist Democratic Party of India (SDPI). The funds were used not only for terror activities across the country, but also for radicalising young people. The organisation had ties to a pan-Islamist organisation such as the Muslim Brotherhood and intended to be the face of Islam in India.

The PFI-core SDPI’s leadership is largely drawn from the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), whose primary goal was to establish an Islamic Caliphate in India. Despite being an ultra-conservative Sunni organisation, PFI positioned itself as the voice of all Muslims in India, including Sufis, Barelvis, and Deobandis.

Taliban have begun carrying out door-to-door nighttime raids in the central and southern provinces of Kandahar and Parwan in Afghanistan under the pretext of tracking down illegal arms, triggering fear among locals and leading to mass evacuations.
As door-to-door searches by the Taliban have become regular in Afghanistan, residents of Kolami village in the Salang district of Parwan are considering a mass evacuation because they are petrified by the Taliban’s nighttime searches, according to Khaama Press. Since US troops returned on August 15 last year and the Taliban took control, house-to-house searches have been conducted by Islamic Emirate forces in various parts of the nation.
Speaking on the raids conducted by the Taliban officials, the Kandahar chief of police said, “The Taliban are not operating alone in their activities; they are joined by neighbourhood elders and religious scholars,” reported Khaama Press.
However, the Taliban officials have claimed that the purpose of these searches is to track down illegal or state-owned firearms.
Earlier in August, the Taliban security forces also conducted house-to-house raids in the city and some districts of the province. Since the previous government fell, house-to-house searches have been conducted by the Taliban time and again in various parts of the nation.
In August 2021, the US left much of the military equipment and weapons at the disposal of the Afghan forces, which eventually fell into the hands of the Taliban.
After capturing Kabul, the Taliban not only took political control of Afghanistan but also gained control of all the US-made weapons and military equipment that were left behind by the fleeing Afghan forces. in shops by Afghan gun dealers.

In connection with a probe into mobile gaming applications, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted six raids in Kolkata on Saturday and confiscated $6.25 crore in cash. The Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) 2002 provisions were followed in conducting the ongoing searches. Cash counting and search procedures are in progress.

The ED said in a statement that a first information report (FIR) had been filed at the Park Street Police Station based on information from Federal Bank authorities.

One person named Amir Khan is one of the accused in the case. Khan had developed the mobile game E-Nuggets.

According to the agency, Khan created the app in an effort to deceive the public. Users started investing larger sums for a higher percentage of commission and a greater number of purchase orders because they were initially paid with money and could easily withdraw their wallet balance.

The agency further said: “After collecting a handsome amount from the public, all of a sudden, the withdrawal from the said app was stopped, on one or the other pretext, viz., system upgradation, investigation by LEAs etc.” Thereafter, all data, including profile information, was wiped off from the said app servers and only then the users understood the ploy.”

Ahead of the Bihar floor test on Wednesday, the Central Investigation Agency (CBI) raided the premises of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders in Bihar in connection with the land for job scam. The CBI is raiding the residence of RJD Rajya Sabha MP Ashfaque Karim, MP Faiyaz Ahmed, and former MLC Subodh Roy.

The CBI team reached the residence of RJD leaders on 24 August morning. Sunil Singh and his wife have described the raid as an act of retaliation.

Meanwhile, Manoj Jha, RJD MP questioned the timing of the raids and said, “It is being done intentionally. There is no meaning to it. They are doing it thinking that out of fear, MLAs will come in their favor,” said Singh, RJD MLC and Chairman of Bihar state co-operative marketing union ltd. (BISCOMAUN) whose house was raided today.”

Jha further stated, “Useless to say that it is a raid by ED or IT or CBI, it is a raid by Bharatiya Janata Party. They work under BJP now, and their offices run with BJP script. Today is Floor Test (in Bihar Assembly) & what’s happening here? It has become predictable.”

On Wednesday (24 August) newly formed Bihar government faces a trust vote on the floor of the Vidhan Sabha.

“Our Deputy CM had said in the meeting yesterday that they will reach this level now. It didn’t take even 24 hours. They stooped even lower. What is this anger? That a Government did not run according to your wishes? That it changed the alliance for public welfare?”, Jha said.

However, JDU MLC Neeraj Kumar alleged that the BJP-led government is misusing the central agencies.

“The central government has used CBI and ED as government instruments. Today, the state government is about to prove its majority and you (BJP) sent CBI and ED for ‘Shakti Parikshan’. Bihar is the land of democracy and does not matter if you send a dozen agencies, there is no one to create pressure on Mahagathbandhan’s MLAs,” Kumar said.

Earlier in May this year, an FIR had been filed by the CBI against Lalu Yadav, his wife, and daughters among several others in the “land for railway job” case. In July CBI arrested Bhola Yadav who was Officer on Special Duty (OSD) when Lalu Prasad Yadav was railway minister.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted raids at many places in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. Raids have been conducted in Jammu, Kathua, Samba, and Doda districts. This raid has been done in the matter of supplying arms through drones in the state.

Meanwhile, NIA officials were also seen outside the house of the main accused Faisal Munir. Earlier, last month Munir was arrested.

On the morning of 17 August, the police recovered arms and ammunition from Jammu’s Toph village. The consignment was dropped by a drone into India from the Pakistan side.

“Though no recovery was made at the first place but at the second place in Toph village (near the International Border) in Phallian Mandal area, a packet of arms, ammunition and explosives were recovered. When the packet was being opened, the accused attacked one of the police officials and snatched his service rifle. He fired at the police party and tried to flee from the spot,” ADGP Mukesh Singh said.

The police had registered a case at Arnia police station on 24 February in connection with the sending of weapons by drones. One of the accused in this case had told the police that Mohammad Ali Hussain alias Qasim controls the sending of weapons. This work is done by the main terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Al Badr.

“In retaliation, the accused got injured and was shifted to Government Medical College Jammu along with an injured police official. The injured terrorist later succumbed to his injuries,” said the official.

In the last few months the Jammu and Kashmir Police have made several arrests in connection with the sending of weapons to India by drones.

However, more details into the matter are awaited.

50 crores have been taken back in total from Arpita Mukherjee’s two apartments. All of this cash was in the form of 500 and 2,000 dollar bills. According to reports, cash was discovered in Arpita’s Belgharia apartment’s bathroom as well.

Arpita Mukherjee, who is rumoured to be a close friend of West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee, had two apartments raided by the enforcement directorate, and they discovered a large quantity of cash totalling 50 crore, in addition to gold, dollars, and other papers. The recoveries are related to the fraud involving teacher appointments. Model and actress Arpita Mukherjee, who has worked in the Bengali and Odia cinema industries, is currently being held by the ED. She is thought to have told the detectives that Partha Chatterjee had used his apartments as a makeshift bank. The recovered funds have already been disassociated from the Trinamool.

Two of her apartments were searched by the ED, one in South Kolkata and the other close to Kolkata in Belgharia.

Here is the list of things that the ED discovered during the initial raid.

70 Lakhs IN GOLD

50 lakhs in dollars

₹21 crore in currency notes

20 cell phones

On Wednesday, the ED recovered the things listed below during the second raid:

₹28 crore

5 kg of gold, including gold bars

According to accounts, during the second raid, authorities also discovered cash concealed in the restroom. After questioning Arpita Mukherjee, with whom she is supposedly collaborating, ED officers learned about her Belgharia apartment. Money was counted from Wednesday at around 6 p.m. until Thursday at 4 a.m. The cash was loaded into trucks in the morning, and large machines were brought in to count the notes.
