Khare stated, “A pet cat was brutally beaten and tossed in a corridor by a student from Chhattisgarh living in Pune with her boyfriend.”. Thanks to swift action and police intervention, we got them detained and made them realise their mistake. The cat is now safe and will soon move to a loving foster home. NC has been filed.”

He also called on the public to be kind to animals and went on, “Remember: Your pets deserve the same love, care, and respect as any family member. If we ever come across animals being treated cruelly, we will make sure that proper legal action is taken. Let’s make this world kinder for all living beings.”

The horrific act provoked angry reactions on social media. One replied, “Her admission must be cancelled forthwith. The lady deserves mental health treatment, not a profession. She doesn’t have any right to be a human being. The same thing should be done to her bashing and physical assault. The couple reported the theft, and police are reviewing CCTV footage.
</excerpt>

A Pune couple was reportedly robbed of gold ornaments worth Rs. 75,000 by two unidentified individuals who posed as good Samaritans following a road accident. It happened around 10 pm on Thursday near Shriram Chowk in Tilekarnagar, Kondhwa.

According to a report by TOI, 32-year-old Sachin Sanjay Mahajan and his wife were returning home from Yewalewadi when their motorcycle slipped after hitting a pothole, causing both of them to fall. Mahajan, a shop owner based in Kondhwa, said he briefly lost consciousness while his wife suffered minor injuries on her hands.

Shortly after the fall, two men came to the couple, who seemed like Good Samaritans. The men helped pick up the motorcycle and parked it in the right manner. Appreciative of the act, the couple thanked the men as they were about to leave the scene.

But while talking to his wife soon after the accident, Mahajan realized his gold chain worth Rs. 75,000 was gone. The couple checked thoroughly around but could not locate it and suspected the two men who had just assisted them. They later found that their motorcycle keys were also stolen.

Realizing they had been robbed, the couple went straight to Kondhwa Police Station to lodge a complaint.

A Kondhwa police officer informed TOI, “He came and made a complaint. Investigations are on.” Mahajan, who is also employed with a private company, had started a shop selling disposable items in Tilekarnagar.

Senior Police Inspector Vinay Patankar told the Free Press Journal (FPJ) that CCTV footage of the spot is being analyzed. He assured, “The snatchers will be arrested soon.” The case has been registered under Sections 303(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Viral videos showed submerged buses. NCP(SP) leader Supriya Sule urged immediate drainage action as construction and poor infrastructure continue to hinder rainwater flow and public safety.
</excerpt>

Heavy showers pounded Pune on Saturday, transforming the city’s Hinjewadi IT Park into something right out of a water park. Sustained rain flooded the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park complex, with roads submerged and traffic near a halt. Commuters were stuck with delayed journeys as cars formed long queues, trying to navigate through the soaked roads.

A since-viral video records the intensity of the situation, a flooded public bus, almost under water, is observed to slow through the flooded area, making waves as it goes. Another air-conditioned Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) bus was also stuck in the flood, partially underwater.

Poor Drainage System, Old Infrastructure

Hinjewadi’s Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, which houses approximately 400 IT and IT-enabled service firms, continues to battle poor drainage systems and aging infrastructure. The ongoing metro development and roadwork have further complicated matters, as they block the natural flow of rainwater cascading from surrounding hills, worsening the flooding problem during monsoons.

Pune was showered with more than 150 mm of rain on Saturday alone, triggering the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a ‘yellow’ alert of heavy rain on Sunday too.

Supriya Sule Calls Out Authorities

NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule posted on social media to bring notice to the waterlogging situation, especially around Ryan International School in Hinjewadi Phase 2. She posted a video clip indicating the level of flooding and expressed concern regarding the drainage management of the area.

“A lot of water has collected due to heavy rain around Ryan International School and numerous other locations in the Hinjewadi Phase 2 region. It is unclear if there is any drainage system to clear water here,” Sule posted on X.

Watch:

— Supriya Sule (@supriya_sule) June 7, 2025

She also demanded that the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) step in at the earliest and begin permanent measures.

Such works as draining the pipelines here must be carried out in time. But such works do not appear to be carried out in time. MIDC must give immediate attention to this issue and adopt long-term strategies to avoid water clogging here in the future and cause inconvenience to the citizens,” she added.

With infrastructure lagging behind development and rainfall intensity, residents and governments are stuck with seasonal urban flooding that does not seem to ease.

The incident occurred early on February 25 when the victim, waiting for a bus to Phaltan in Satara district around 5:45 a.m., was tricked by Gade into boarding an apparently empty bus. Claiming to be a conductor, he falsely asserted that the bus was occupied with people sleeping inside. Once the door was locked, the accused assaulted her. Despite several people being present at the bustling bus stand, the attack went undetected until CCTV footage captured the woman approaching the bus with the suspect.

Swift Police Response and Ongoing Manhunt

Alarmed by the video and the victim’s account, local authorities swiftly deployed eight teams along with sniffer dogs to search for Gade in the city. A Pune police team has even questioned his brother to help ascertain his whereabouts. The police confirmed that cases are registered at the Shikrapur and Shirur police stations in Pune district, as well as in the Ahilyanagar area. Recent reports also indicate that another theft case involving Gade was filed last year.

Victim’s Ordeal and Aftermath

After the assault, the victim managed to escape by signalling to a nearby traffic cop and boarding an auto driver’s vehicle to reach safety. Distraught and shaken, she later recounted her experience on Reddit, expressing disbelief and anger at the incident. The victim also filed a police complaint and reported that the delivery service, Rapido, inadvertently compounded her ordeal by not protecting her contact details; the accused reportedly began bombarding her with OTP messages every 15 minutes after sharing her number.

Community Outcry

The horrifying incident has sparked widespread outrage online, with social media users condemning the act of violence and demanding swift action against the accused. As police intensify their search, the case continues to fuel calls for improved safety measures at one of Pune’s busiest transit hubs.

Authorities remain committed to bringing Dattatraya Ramdas Gade to justice and ensuring that such violent incidents are prevented in the future.

She claimed the hotel’s General Manager was dismissive and rude when she raised concerns. The incident sparked discussions online about hygiene standards in luxury hotels.
</excerpt>

A doctor from Chandigarh recently shared an experience at a 5-star hotel in Pune regarding issues with room assignment and hygiene issues. The narrator claimed that her room was changed without prior notice or explanation while checking into the hotel, but she accepted the change. Unfortunately, her stay worsened when she returned from the spa to discover a used comb inside a sealed package in her room.

Taking to X, she complained against the hygiene and professionalism maintained at the hotel. ” Checked in to Hyatt Pune. Just to notice that my room had been switched without any sort of intimation. No explanation, no apology, no courtesy. Just a silent switch. But I was accommodated. But then I went to their spa, returned to my room, opened up a sealed pack of comb from which I came across a used comb. Recycled hotel amenities? Disgusting and unhygienic. If they’re reusing combs, what else are they reusing? Toothbrushes? Horrifying to even think about. Raised my concerns with GM Sandesh Parab and that’s when things went from bad to worse. Instead of listening, he was rude, condescending and dismissive.”

She further alleged that when she confronted the General Manager about the issue, he reacted aggressively. “When I told him not to do this and that social media can make or break reputations these days, he shouted at me and said, ‘Do what you want, I’ll see what I need to do.’ I asked his permission to take his picture to highlight the issue, he became nasty. This is how Hyatt Pune GM treats guests.”. A 5-star hotel with zero hygiene standards, recycled amenities, and a General Manager who bullies customers? Unacceptable, is this your hospitality standard?”

Checked in to Hyatt Pune, only to find my room was changed without any prior intimation. No explanation, no apology, no courtesy. Just a silent switch. But I accommodated.

But then went to their spa, came back to my room & opened a “sealed” comb package & found a comb that… pic.twitter.com/xhmbziG28a

The post elicited a reaction from online users with one of them recounting that “I have experienced the same scenario once, since then, I have adopted a culture of taking the toiletries along with the laundry bag, so that nothing can be recycled, most of this stuff is unwanted, so I just dump them in some garbage bin along the road. But I don’t drop them there for use again.

That is shocking behavior by the GM. If I were the boss, I would have investigated and probably sacked him for lack of propriety and probably sacked a couple of other senior managers for substandard hygiene. Arrogance and shabby standards have no place in the service industry,” another user was critical of the management at that hotel.

However, some light with laughter came during the discussion with one participant saying, “He was newly promoted and is probably experiencing some kind of performance anxiety. You should have prescribed iRed Super Combo to help him perform better.” Others mentioned that Hyatt hotels have a long history of horrible customer service: “Hyatt has that reputation of being inhospitable and rude to their guests.”. I feel that the hotels operated by the chain in 3-tier cities are not well groomed. Someone else raised even broader concerns and wrote, “When a hotel recycles sealed amenities, they’re not only betraying the trust of a customer, they’re gambling with health and safety. The question is: if they’re prepared to cut combs in visible items, what’s happening in the dark places?

This demands urgent attention His post has since become viral, having gained over five lakh views.

</excerpt>

Pune, Maharashtra, has recently witnessed a concerning surge in cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), an immunological disorder that attacks the nervous system. The number of reported cases in the city has escalated to 67 within just one week, prompting significant concern among healthcare authorities. Out of these, 13 patients are in critical condition, requiring ventilator support. Health officials are conducting investigations to determine the exact cause of this unusual spike in GBS cases, and initial findings suggest that Campylobacter jejuni, a bacterium commonly associated with foodborne infections, may be responsible.

What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)?

Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare and serious autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own peripheral nervous system. It leads to a rapid onset of muscle weakness, loss of sensation, and in some severe cases, paralysis. GBS is often preceded by an infection, typically viral or bacterial, which triggers the immune system to become hyperactive, eventually damaging the nervous system.

Symptoms of GBS can include muscle weakness, loss of reflexes, tingling sensations, pain, and in severe cases, respiratory failure, which may necessitate the use of a ventilator. The condition often follows a gastrointestinal or respiratory infection, and while it can affect people of all ages, young adults are more likely to develop severe symptoms.

The syndrome is named after two French doctors, Georges Guillain and Jean Alexandre Barré, who first described the condition in 1916. While GBS is rare, its impact on health can be life-threatening, and it requires immediate medical intervention to manage symptoms and prevent complications.

The Surge in GBS Cases in Pune

In Pune, health authorities have been alarmed by the rapid increase in GBS cases over the past week. As of the latest reports, 43 men and 24 women have been diagnosed with the syndrome, with the majority of cases concentrated in the Sinhagad Road, Dhayari, and Kirkatwadi areas. The patients affected range in age from 12 to 30 years, and many have presented with symptoms similar to foodborne illnesses, such as diarrhea and abdominal discomfort.

The first reported case of GBS was a 64-year-old woman, who unfortunately passed away due to complications related to the disorder. Medical professionals have noted that several patients required hospitalization in intensive care units (ICUs), with some experiencing short-term muscle weakness and respiratory issues. Doctors have also reported that most of the affected individuals had been exposed to contaminated food and water before developing symptoms.

The Role of Campylobacter jejuni

Initial investigations have pointed to Campylobacter jejuni, a bacteria commonly found in the intestines of poultry and other animals, as a potential cause of the GBS outbreak. This bacterium is a leading cause of foodborne illness worldwide and is typically transmitted to humans through consumption of undercooked poultry, contaminated dairy products, or untreated water.

Campylobacter jejuni infection often leads to symptoms such as abdominal cramps, fever, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which can be bloody in some cases. These symptoms usually appear within two to five days after exposure and may last for a week or more. In some individuals, the infection may lead to post-infection complications such as GBS, a rare but serious neurological condition.

The PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation) has sent water samples for testing to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune, as it is believed that contaminated water from local sources, including wells and the Khadakwasla dam, may have contributed to the outbreak. The Campylobacter jejuni bacteria are known to be resistant to chlorine, which makes it difficult for standard water treatment processes to completely eliminate the pathogen.

Medical Response and Preventive Measures

Upon detecting the surge in GBS cases, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) immediately set up a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to conduct a detailed survey of the affected individuals. Medical authorities have also initiated tests to determine the specific source of infection and are closely monitoring the situation. The ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research)-National Institute of Virology (NIV) is currently analyzing the samples from affected patients.

Despite the rising number of cases, health officials, including Dr. Nina Borade, PMC’s Chief of the Health Department, have assured the public that GBS does not pose a risk of becoming an epidemic or pandemic. Dr. Borade has emphasized that with proper treatment, most patients can recover fully. However, the situation remains under close scrutiny, and further investigations will continue to monitor the situation.

The state health department has also put in place preventive measures to curb the spread of Campylobacter jejuni. These measures include educating the public about the importance of cooking meat thoroughly, practicing good hygiene by washing hands frequently, and consuming clean, treated water. Additionally, local authorities have urged residents to report any symptoms such as sudden muscle weakness, difficulty in walking, or persistent gastrointestinal distress, as these may be signs of GBS or foodborne infection.

The Importance of Early Diagnosis and Treatment

While Guillain-Barré Syndrome can be treated, it is crucial that it be diagnosed early to prevent severe complications. Early intervention with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) or plasmapheresis (plasma exchange) can help reduce the severity of the condition and speed up recovery. Patients with severe cases may require ventilator support to assist with breathing until their muscle strength returns.

Dr. Padmanabh Keskar, a prominent emergency medical expert in Pune, explained that patients who experience significant muscle weakness or respiratory problems often require ICU admission and artificial respiration. In these cases, swift diagnosis and treatment are essential for preventing further complications and ensuring the best possible outcome.

The rise in GBS cases in Pune underscores the need for heightened awareness about the condition, its potential triggers, and the importance of seeking timely medical attention when symptoms arise. It also highlights the need for increased public health initiatives aimed at reducing the incidence of foodborne illnesses, particularly those caused by bacteria like Campylobacter jejuni, which can lead to serious health complications like GBS.

Potential Long-Term Effects of GBS

Although many individuals recover from Guillain-Barré Syndrome, the road to recovery can be long and difficult. Some patients may experience lingering effects, such as weakness, numbness, or difficulty walking, even after they have been discharged from the hospital. In rare cases, GBS can result in long-term disability or permanent nerve damage.

The mental and emotional impact of GBS on patients and their families can also be significant, especially in cases where recovery is prolonged. In addition to physical rehabilitation, patients may require psychological support to cope with the challenges associated with this rare and debilitating condition.

The sudden rise in Guillain-Barré Syndrome cases in Pune has raised alarms among public health officials, and investigations into the cause of the outbreak are ongoing. Campylobacter jejuni, a bacteria commonly associated with foodborne illnesses, is suspected to be the trigger for this surge in GBS cases. While the condition remains rare, the rapid increase in cases underscores the importance of continued vigilance, early diagnosis, and effective treatment.

As authorities work to investigate the source of the outbreak and implement preventive measures, residents of Pune are urged to practice good hygiene, cook food properly, and drink clean, treated water to minimize the risk of infection. Awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public about the symptoms of GBS and foodborne illnesses will also play a critical role in preventing further cases and ensuring the health and safety of the community.

With the right medical interventions and public health initiatives, the city hopes to bring the situation under control and reduce the impact of this rare but serious condition.

However, while walking back to the pavilion, he suddenly collapsed.

The incident was captured on camera as the match was being live-streamed. Fellow players quickly rushed to his aid, and he was promptly taken to the hospital. Sadly, doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

Imran leaves behind his wife and three daughters, the youngest being just four months old. He was a well-known figure in the area, owning a cricket team, a real estate business, and even a juice shop. This tragic loss comes just months after another cricketer, Habib Shaikh, died similarly during a match in Pune. However, Habib had an underlying condition, being diabetic, which was not the case for Imran.

Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla began his journey as the son of a horse breeder and is now one of India’s wealthiest individuals. He founded the Serum Institute of India in 1966, which gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic as a key vaccine producer.

The institute is responsible for producing 1.5 billion doses of vaccines annually for diseases such as polio, flu, and measles, according to GQ India. In recognition of his significant contributions to vaccine development and distribution, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors, in 2022.

The Serum Institute is recognized as the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, producing more vaccines than any other company globally. Currently, the company is managed by Cyrus’s son, Adar Poonawalla, who has broadened the family’s business interests into various sectors.

As per the 2024 Hurun India Rich List, Cyrus Poonawalla has amassed a net worth of Rs. 2,89,900 crore as the chairman and managing director of the Cyrus Poonawalla Group, with the Serum Institute valued at Rs. 2,04,300 crore.

In addition to the Serum Institute, Poonawalla has significant investments in Poonawalla Fincorp, a non-banking financial firm focused on consumer and MSME financing, as well as The Ritz-Carlton hotel in Pune. Following in his father Soli Poonawalla’s footsteps, he also owns a large farm dedicated to breeding award-winning horses.

Among his valuable assets is a luxurious seaside mansion located in Mumbai’s Breach Candy area, purchased in 2015 from the U.S. government for Rs. 750 crore, making it one of India’s most expensive real estate transactions.

Recently, his son Adar Poonawalla ventured into the film industry by acquiring a 50 percent stake in filmmaker Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions for Rs. 1,000 crore.

</excerpt>

A chartered accountant from Pune, Priti Jain, made news after securing a three-night stay at a luxurious Marriott resort in Uttarakhand using only her credit card points, spending nothing out of pocket. Jain accumulated 58,000 reward points on her American Express Platinum card after spending Rs 4 lakh, which she then converted into Marriott Bonvoy points—the loyalty program of Marriott International. Marriott Bonvoy points are redeemable for hotel stays and various travel experiences, and they can also be purchased based on demand.

Jain revealed on X that the hotel provided her with a complimentary upgrade. On the first day, she was moved from a standard room to a premier room, and for the next two days, she enjoyed an executive suite. Describing her experience, she said, “feeling like royalty,” adding that the suite’s typical price exceeded Rs 90,000 per night.

She detailed her luxurious experience, highlighting that Marriott offered complimentary breakfast, hi-tea, and a Ganga aarti every evening on the deck overlooking the river. “There was live music, great food, and an overall relaxing experience for guests,” Jain remarked.

The booking required 25,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, which Jain transferred from her AMEX rewards during a promotional 30% bonus offer. By utilizing the 58,000 AMEX points she accumulated, Jain secured a stay originally valued at Rs 1.5 lakh. With the suite upgrade and complimentary meals included, the total value amounted to nearly Rs 3 lakh, which she described as “an incredible deal.”

Last month, another credit card enthusiast shared a similar story. He took his family to the luxury JW Marriott lodge in Masai Mara, Kenya, for five nights without spending anything. The vacation, valued at Rs 27.5 lakh, was entirely covered by his accumulated reward points.

“After eating the sandwiches, some students began vomiting and fell ill. All hospitalized students are in stable condition and are out of danger,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shivaji Pawar, speaking to ANI.

“Most of the students were discharged by evening,” he added.

Dr. Dhananjay Patil from Chetna Hospital in Pimpri-Chinchwad reported that around 30 students were admitted for treatment by 3 PM on Thursday.

“Initially, about 18 students were brought in at 1 PM. They were experiencing dizziness, stomach pain, and vomiting. By 3 PM, a total of 30 students had been admitted, all of whom were discharged after treatment,” he said.

When questioned about the cause of the suspected food poisoning, Dr. Patil mentioned, “It may be due to the sandwiches served during breakfast at the school.”

This is the second such incident in the region in recent days. On October 1, 38 students from Kalwa Sahyadri School in Thane were hospitalized after consuming khichdi at the school, leading to a case of food poisoning. The affected students were in the 5th and 6th grades.

In the clip, the auto driver continues to bang on Verma’s car and window, shouting profanities and insisting that Verma exit the vehicle. Following the incident, Verma lodged a complaint at the Sangvi Police Station, but no action has been taken against the auto driver thus far.

Reactions from netizens regarding the road rage incident have been mixed. While some commenters pointed out that the auto-rickshaw driver was clearly at fault, others called for authorities to review CCTV and dashcam footage before taking any action against either party. Many netizens also highlighted the need for prompt police intervention in road rage cases due to safety concerns.

Earlier this year, another severe road rage incident occurred in Pune, where a woman was assaulted and left bleeding. The 27-year-old, who was traveling on a scooter with her children on the Baner-Pashan Road, claimed that an elderly couple attempted to overtake her. She stated that they followed her for 2 kilometers until she stopped at the roadside, where they exited their vehicle and assaulted her.

</excerpt>

EY, one of the world’s largest professional services firms, is facing intense public scrutiny after the tragic death of a 26-year-old employee, Anna Sebastian, at their Pune office. The employee, who worked as a chartered accountant in EY’s audit team, passed away just four months after joining the firm. In response, EY issued a statement expressing their “deep sadness” and offering condolences to the family, but the reaction has sparked outrage on social media.

EY’s Statement: “Deeply Saddened”

In their official statement, EY expressed grief over the untimely passing of Anna Sebastian. “That her promising career was cut short in this tragic manner is an irreparable loss for all of us. While no measure can compensate for the loss experienced by the family, we have provided all the assistance as we always do in such times of distress and will continue to do so,” the company stated.

EY also mentioned their ongoing efforts to improve workplace well-being for their employees, adding that they are taking the family’s concerns seriously and “with the utmost humility.”

Public Backlash: “Typical Corporate Response”

Despite EY’s words of condolence, the statement was widely criticized online. Many people labeled it as a “typical corporate response,” accusing the company of failing to address the root cause of the employee’s death. Social media users expressed frustration with what they saw as a lack of accountability from the company.

One user commented, “EY’s response is a classic lesson on how to say nothing will change without saying nothing will change.” Another added, “EY needs to take this seriously. They cannot play with the lives of people due to the inefficiency of their managers or top management. End the inefficiency of EY.”

Allegations from the Family

The case gained national attention after Anna Sebastian’s mother, Anita Augustine, wrote a letter to EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani, blaming the overwhelming work pressure at the firm for her daughter’s death. In her letter, she mentioned that no one from EY attended the funeral, further fueling the backlash against the company.

Calls for Reform in Corporate Work Culture

The tragic incident has ignited broader conversations about toxic work environments and the pressure placed on employees in corporate jobs. Critics have called for urgent reforms in work culture at EY and other large firms, urging companies to prioritize the well-being of employees over meeting client deadlines. Some even suggested that EY should be held accountable for failing to provide a healthy working environment.

As public outrage continues, the tragedy of Anna Sebastian’s death has brought renewed focus on corporate work culture, particularly in high-pressure environments like EY. The firm’s response, though filled with condolences, has done little to calm the storm, as calls for greater accountability and workplace reform grow louder.

Social media erupted in anger at death of a 24-year-old CA. Many users slammed the working culture turning “toxic” at many places. In a letter to Rajiv Mamani, head of EY India, her mother Anita Augustine said that Anna Sebastian Prile joined EY as a chartered accountant just four months.

Her mother said this was her daughter’s first job and she was happy and excited during the time of joining but after joining she had to work late at night and even on weekends. She also mentioned that “no one from her company attended her funeral”. A grieving mother has accused consulting firm Ernst & Young (EY) of promoting a culture of overwork after the death of her 26-year-old daughter

Anna Perayil. In a letter to the company’s India head, Augustine expressed that Anna, who was new to the organization, had been overwhelmed by the excessive workload and the pressure to meet unreasonable demands.

Social media users posted a letter from Anna’s mother to Mamani, asking Infoysys co-founder Narayana Murthy who in the recent past had advocated 70-hour work in a week.

Recounting an incident that reflected the strain on Anna, Augustine described how her daughter was once assigned a task by her assistant manager late at night, with a strict deadline the following morning. When Anna voiced her concerns, the response was dismissive: “You can work at night; that’s what we all do.” According to Augustine, Anna’s condition began to deteriorate under the increasing pressure. “Anna would return to her room utterly exhausted, sometimes collapsing on the bed without even changing her clothes,” Augustine said.

Despite her best efforts and hard work to meet deadlines, she was often bombarded with more messages demanding reports. Augustine mentioned that she and her family advised Anna to quit, but she insisted on staying to gain experience and exposure. However, the workload eventually became too much for her. In her email, Augustine accused EY of “glorifying overwork” and highlighted the stark difference between the company’s human rights statement and the reality of its work culture. “How can EY begin to truly live by the values it professes?” she questioned. Augustine described how Anna, being new to the “organization, location, and language,” was left feeling “overwhelmed by both assigned and unassigned tasks.”

She also noted that Anna, like many young professionals, lacked the experience and agency to set boundaries or push back against excessive demands. “She did not know how to say no. She was trying to prove herself in a new environment, and in doing so, she pushed herself beyond limits,” Augustine added. The grieving mother called on EY to reflect on its work culture, urging the company to take meaningful steps to prioritize the health and wellness of its employees.

“Her death should serve as a wake-up call for the company,” she said. Augustine further claimed that EY employees from the Pune office did not attend her daughter’s funeral. “This absence at such a critical moment, for an employee who gave her all to your organization until her last breath, is deeply hurtful,” she stated.

Augustine also mentioned that she received no response from her daughter’s managers after reaching out post-funeral, questioning how a company that claims to value human rights could fail to show support in such tragic circumstances. The exact cause of Anna’s death on July 20 remains unclear. However, in the weeks leading up to it, she had reportedly complained of “chest constriction.” Despite a normal ECG and reassurances from a cardiologist that she was simply experiencing stress due to a lack of sleep and poor eating habits, her condition ultimately worsened.

</excerpt>

Relocating to Mumbai for work often means accumulating a list of property brokers, as finding a suitable home in the city is challenging. High rents for small spaces and stringent landlord conditions make renting in Mumbai particularly difficult.

This may explain why Neil Borate, Editor of Personal Finance at LiveMint, chooses to travel from Pune to Mumbai weekly rather than permanently relocating. To avoid the hassle of renting, he stays in hotels and Airbnbs during his visits.

In a LinkedIn post, Borate shared his preference for staying in South Mumbai hotels and Airbnbs and provided a breakdown of his expenses. “Each week, I divide my time between Pune (my home) and Mumbai (for work). After some struggles, I’ve given up on renting in Mumbai. I go for Airbnbs and hotels instead,” he noted.

Borate enjoys the old-world charm of Colaba hotels and listed his top three choices: The Sea Green Hotel, The Strand, and The Westend Hotel. Booking these hotels starts at approximately Rs. 5,000 per night. He advised, “If you book these, don’t come with expectations of modern hotels. You will generally get metal keys instead of key cards. There won’t be gyms, pools, or any other fancy amenities. Instead, enjoy the great location and history all around you.”

When asked about the cost comparison between renting and staying in hotels, Borate clarified in the comments section, “So you are spending a lakh per month on hotels?” He responded, “I spend about Rs. 40,000 a month on hotels and Airbnbs, staying about 2 nights a week in Mumbai. Sometimes Airbnbs are half the price, so no, I don’t spend a lakh a month on hotels. It’s probably around Rs. 40,000, which is comparable to a 1 BHK rental anyway.”

</excerpt>

On Friday, Pune city police confirmed that they have questioned National Congress Party (NCP) MLA Sunil Tingre in connection with the Porsche car accident case.

Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated, “Yes, we have inquired about everyone directly or indirectly involved in the Porsche car case, including MLA Sunil Tingre.”

The incident occurred on May 19, when a 17-year-old driving a luxury Porsche crashed into a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of two young riders in Kalyaninagar. Following the accident, there were allegations that MLA Tingre attempted to intervene at the police station to protect the juvenile driver and used his political influence to sway the investigation.

MLA Tingre has denied these allegations.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar recently mentioned in a public speech that Tingre was questioned by the police for three to four hours. Pawar asserted that Tingre had clarified his lack of involvement in the case and criticized those attempting to implicate him unfairly.

Bun Maska, a beloved tea-time companion, was once exclusive to Pune’s traditional Irani or Parsee cafes. This sweet, butter-laden bun has since become a widespread delight, now available in most establishments that serve tea. Let’s explore how this simple yet flavorful snack became the favorite pairing with tea.

Irani Café, Deccan Gymkhana, Prabhat Road

Irani Café, synonymous with bun maska and chai, serves this classic dish around the clock. According to Abas Ali, the 74-year-old head of the café, they sell about 50-70 dozen buns on weekdays, with numbers almost doubling on weekends.

“Each Irani café follows the same chai recipe,” says Abas Ali. “This café ensures customer satisfaction by never refusing a request and replenishing dishes if they run out. While the infrastructure and prices have changed over the years, the taste has remained consistent due to a fixed recipe.”

Traditionally, buns were baked in wood-fired ovens, but modern methods have taken over. While the maska was once homemade, it now exclusively features Amul butter. The price of bun maska, which was 6-7 naya paisa in 1962, has risen to Rs 55 today, while the tea combo has increased from 15 naya paisa to Rs 25. Despite these changes, Irani Café remains a cherished spot in Pune.

Bryan Augustine, a 24-year-old mechanical engineer, shares, “Bun maska and chai is our go-to dish. My family loves it, and no visit is complete without it.”

Goodluck Café, Fergusson College Road

Goodluck Café, a landmark in Pune’s Deccan area, is famous for its bun maska. Ghasem Yakhshi, the second-generation owner, reveals that the café has been serving bun maska since 1935.

“People come to our café specifically for bun maska and chai,” says Ghasem Yakhshi. He notes that the café experiences high sales throughout the year, especially during the rainy season, selling 70-80 dozen buns on weekdays and up to 150 dozen on weekends, alongside 85-90 litres of chai daily. While prices have increased from 25 paisa for tea and 50-60 paisa for bun maska in 1989 to Rs 25 and Rs 50, respectively, the bun maska—made with 85% Amul butter and 15% homemade butter—remains a customer favorite. Goodluck Café, for the Yakhshi family, is a treasured legacy that continues to thrive.

The café has also expanded its menu, offering variations like bun jam, bun maska omelette, bun maska masala omelette, and bun maska omelette with mushrooms.

Rutuja Kakde, a 21-year-old M.Com student, says, “Bun maska and chai is the best… I would recommend everyone try it at Goodluck Café. During the rainy season, it’s the perfect hit.”

Café Paradise, Opposite Sahyadri Hospital

For over 60 years, Café Paradise on Karve Road has been a go-to spot for bun maska lovers. This simple yet satisfying combination is especially popular during the monsoon.

“We’ve been serving bun maska from the start, and people still love it,” say managers Aslam Shahrukh Khan (21) and Rehan Mirza (24). “Years ago, it was priced at Rs 5, but now it is Rs 40. Despite the price increase, we’ve maintained the quality.”

Café Paradise sells around 40 to 50 bun maskas daily. The buns are sourced from bakeries in Kondhwa and Rasta Peth, and the butter is always Amul. Even as prices rise, bun maska remains a favorite, especially during the rainy season when it’s the perfect snack with a cup of tea.

Aarya Awate, a 20-year-old Garware College student, says, “Café Paradise is where my college friends and I go most frequently after lectures. They serve the best bun maska and chai. During the rainy season, it’s our go-to breakfast.”

</excerpt>

To ease traffic congestion in Pune, 35 prominent mandals came together to organise a single Dahi Handi event at Lal Mahal Chowk near Shaniwar Wada. This coordinated celebration aimed to reduce disruptions and enhance traffic flow during peak hours. Participating mandals, including the Shrimant Bhau Rangari Ganapati Trust and Shri Tambdi Jogeshwari Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandal, opted to celebrate collectively to avoid traffic jams in the city’s central region.

Puneet Balan, chairman of the Bhausaheb Rangari Ganapati temple, led the initiative with the goal of reducing traffic congestion and noise pollution. He expressed his gratitude to all the Govindas who took part in this first-ever joint Dahi Handi event in Pune.

“I am grateful to all the Govinda’s that participated in this first-ever joint Dahi Handi organised in Pune city. We are deeply grateful to the people of Pune who enthusiastically attended and participated in this Dahi Handi. The police administration helped and ensured everyone’s safety, the event was conducted smoothly and a Pune-based Govinda team named Shivtej broke the Dahi Handi,” Balan said.

The event was vibrant showcase of unity and festive spirit. Dahi Handis decorated with flowers were set up, accompanied by traditional drumbeats and popular Bollywood songs to maintain high enthusiasm. Earlier on Tuesday, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that 106 Govindas were injured during Dahi Handi celebrations for Krishna Janmashtami.

Last year, Dahi Handi celebrations saw 195 Govindas injured in various incidents. The BMC noted that 18 of these were hospitalised while the remaining 177 were treated and discharged.

Dahi Handi is a major cultural event where an earthen pot filled with curd, butter, and other dairy products is hung at a height. Participants form a human pyramid to reach and break the pot. This tradition reflects Lord Krishna’s playful nature, his fondness for butter and curd, and his childhood act of eating Dahi hung high. Celebrated on the eighth day of the month of Bhadra according to the Hindu calendar, the festival usually falls in August or September. Janmashtami is marked by prayers to Lord Krishna, with beautifully decorated swings, dance and music performances, and the Dahi Handi competition.

Kamdar and her friends had been filming a video when she slipped into a deep crevice on July 16.

In response to these incidents, Pune local authorities have urged the public to engage in tourism responsibly and prioritize safety while enjoying natural landscapes. They stress the importance of avoiding risky behavior that could jeopardize lives.

Additionally, isolated heavy rain is expected in the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions.

This prediction is due to a persistent cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal and adjacent Bangladesh, coupled with strong westerly winds along the west coast, the IMD stated in its latest forecast.

Heavy Rainfall in Pune:

Two individuals are feared trapped under debris following a landslide in Lavasa, while two others are reported missing and feared drowned in Katraj and Nanayan Peth.

Weather Alerts Issued:

Pune Rain Alert Measures:

Schools in Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune city, and several taluks, including Bhor, Velha, Mulshi, Maval, Khadakwasla dam area, Khed, Junnar, and Ambegaon, will remain closed on July 26.
The heavy rainfall in the Panshet Dam catchment area has filled the reservoir to 83% capacity.

If the inflow continues to rise, water discharge from the dam is highly likely.
The irrigation department has issued an advisory to avoid entering riverbeds and to immediately move agricultural pumps, equipment, and animals, as water has been released from Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River.

Authorities reported that the Mulshi dam is at full capacity due to heavy rainfall, leading to the release of 640 cusecs of water into the Indrayani river basin from the dam’s spillway.
As a precautionary measure, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar announced the deployment of Army and NDRF forces in impacted areas such as Ekta Nagar on Sinhagad Road.

This situation demands caution and preparedness from the residents of Pune and other affected areas. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary actions to mitigate the impact of the heavy rainfall.

Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital in Pune has confirmed that there were no problems with the disability certificate issued to IAS officer Puja Khedkar. The hospital’s investigation showed that the seven percent locomotor disability certificate was issued correctly.

Dr. Rajendra Wable, the Dean of YCM Hospital, explained that the internal review found the certificate was issued after a thorough assessment by the hospital’s physiotherapy and orthopaedic departments. Dr. Wable assured that the medical tests were done properly and followed all rules.

This investigation was triggered by concerns from the Collector’s office in Pune, questioning the validity of Khedkar’s disability claims. Dr. Wable noted that the hospital’s job was to verify if Khedkar lived in the Pimpri Chinchwad area, not to check the address of any private company.

The investigation also found that the disability certificate does not provide any extra benefits for education or employment, contrary to some claims.

Puja Khedkar, a 2023 IAS officer, is facing criticism for allegedly misusing disability and Other Backward Classes (OBC) quota claims to get her civil service position. Earlier this year, she was transferred from Pune to Washim for alleged misconduct, including demanding perks and taking over the office of an additional collector.

The Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussorie has put Khedkar’s probation on hold while the allegations are reviewed. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has also taken legal action against her for exceeding the allowed number of attempts at the civil services exam by allegedly faking her identity. The UPSC is considering canceling her candidature and banning her from future attempts.

The heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Pune’s dams has dramatically increased water levels. For the first time this monsoon season, the irrigation department discharged water from the Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River after it reached 95% capacity on July 24.

Pune is under a red alert according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). District Collector Suhas Diwase has ordered schools to close due to ongoing rain and severe waterlogging. The IMD reports that during June 1 to July 24, 2024, the Pune district received 567.2 mm of rain.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that he has coordinated with officials to put the Indian Air Force and Army on alert for potential flood relief operations in Pune and other affected areas. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is currently stationed at Mantralaya, overseeing coordination with various authorities.

The incident occurred on the Pashan-Baner Link Road, where the man, identified as Swapnil Kekre, reportedly became enraged after he was unable to overtake the scooter.

According to reports, Kekre pulled the woman’s hair and punched her twice, causing severe bleeding from her nose. The incident was brought to public attention after Jerlyn D’Silva, a digital content creator, posted a video detailing her harrowing experience.

D’Silva described how Kekre had been tailgating her scooter for nearly two kilometers before overtaking and abruptly stopping in front of her. He then exited his vehicle and, in a fit of rage, assaulted her despite the presence of her two young children.

The video posted by D’Silva shows her with blood around her nose and mouth as she recounts the traumatic event. She expressed concern over the safety of the city and criticized the aggressive behavior of some drivers.

This incident follows a series of troubling road-related events in Pune. Two months ago, a 17-year-old allegedly driving under the influence rammed his Porsche into two tech professionals, killing them instantly. More recently, a 25-year-old son of a politician caused a serious accident while speeding and intoxicated.

The arrest of Kekre and his wife underscores the ongoing issues of road rage and reckless driving in Pune, highlighting the need for increased road safety measures and responsible driving practices.
