French Police Detain 79 After PSG’s Champions League Celebrations Turn Violent

June 2, 2025, 2:27 pm

French authorities detained 79 people in the second such wave of arrests during celebrations following Paris Saint-Germain’s football Champions League win, a police chief said Monday.

The PSG thrashed Inter Milan by a record 5-0 in Saturday evening’s final in Munich, flying back to Paris on Sunday for a triumphal parade along the Champs Elysees, then celebrations in a packed Parc des Princes stadium on the edge of the French capital.

The PSG winning the biggest prize in European club football for the first time sparked delirious festivities in France, but was marred by violence.

On Sunday, “we saw a resurgence of individuals driven by malicious intent who were not really PSG supporters,” Paris police chief Laurent Nunez told RTL radio.

“We arrested 79 people, some of them in the night,” he said, adding that order had been restored before dawn.

Some were detained over taking barriers and briefly blocking the ring road around Paris, while others had tried to vandalise businesses or fired fireworks on the Champs Elysees, he said.

On Saturday night, police had made more than 500 arrests across France, the interior ministry said, after more than 200 cars were torched and police clashed with youths.

In the southwest town of Dax, a 17-year-old boy died after being stabbed in the chest.

A 23-year-old man riding a scooter in central Paris also died after being hit by a vehicle.

A policeman was in an induced coma after being injured by a firework.

Receiving the triumphant team at the Elysee palace on Sunday, French President Emmanuel Macron condemned what he called “unacceptable” violence during the festivities.

Many of the stars of the team, one of the youngest in the competition, are drawn from the huge football talent pool in the Paris suburbs after PSG’s Qatari owners turned their back on the policy of signing star players like Neymar and Lionel Messi.

A total of 11.5 million people tuned in across France to watch the match.

France Soccer Captain Kylian Mbappe Leaves Paris Saint Germain, Joins Real Madrid

June 4, 2024, 5:26 am

The long-standing speculation surrounding the future of France soccer captain Kylian Mbappe finally came to an end as he joined Spanish club Real Madrid on a five-year contract as a free agent. The 25-year-old, who was a crucial part of the French national team’s World Cup-winning squad, made the move from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to Madrid.

Real Madrid confirmed the signing in an official statement, announcing Mbappe’s arrival on a five-season deal. The move comes shortly after Madrid secured their 15th European Cup title with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final.

Expressing his excitement about joining Real Madrid, Mbappe described it as a dream come true. He expressed gratitude to the club’s supporters and eagerly anticipated representing Los Blancos.

Mbappe’s journey to Real Madrid follows his successful stint at PSG, where he played 290 matches and scored 243 goals since joining from AS Monaco in 2017. Despite his impressive performances, Mbappe openly admitted his desire to play for Real Madrid, a dream he has harboured for years.

Throughout the years, Real Madrid had persistently pursued Mbappe, notably making a significant offer of 220 million Euros in 2021, which PSG declined. However, with his contract expiring, Mbappe seized the opportunity to make his dream move to the Spanish capital.

Xavi blasts referee after Barcelona’s 4-1 loss to PSG

April 17, 2024, 4:15 pm

FC Barcelona lost 4-1 to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League, their coach, Xavi Hernandez, called the referee a “disaster” and attacked his decision to send defender Ronald Araujo off.

Araujo was given a red card by Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs in the 29th minute of play for a last-man challenge on Bradley Barcola. Xavi claimed that this ended the second leg of the quarterfinal.

Barcelona had a 1-0 lead before the red card, but when they were reduced to 10 men, the game took a dramatic turn. Ousmane Dembele netted a goal and Kylian Mbappe netted two to lead PSG to a 4-1 victory and a 6-4 victory overall on his return to Barcelona.

Xavi expressed frustration and disappointment over the outcome of the match, citing the red card incident as a turning point that impacted the entire game. He emphasized the importance of maintaining an 11 vs. 11 setup, stating that the red card changed the dynamics significantly. Xavi criticized the referee’s decisions, calling them a disaster and expressing his disbelief over the turn of events. He acknowledged his own error in getting sent off for protesting a penalty decision but maintained that the referee’s actions heavily influenced the game’s outcome.

“We are annoyed. The red card marked the tie. We were well organized 11 vs. 11. It completely changed everything. For me, it’s too much to send [Araujo] off there,” Xavi stated as quoted from ESPN.

He also added “The referee was really bad. I told him, he was a disaster. He killed the tie. I don’t like speaking about referees but it has to be said. I don’t understand it. It’s not good going down to 10 players and from that point on it’s another game. For as much as we speak [about the match], the red card marks everything,”.

Barcelona had opportunities to level the aggregate score and even take the lead before the red card incident, but missed chances and bad luck contributed to their downfall. Xavi lamented that the hard work of the entire season was overshadowed by one refereeing decision and expressed regret that the match didn’t play out with both teams having a full complement of players throughout.

Sergio Ramos to follow Messi’s footsteps, quitting PSG this summer

June 3, 2023, 4:30 pm

Spanish defender Sergio Ramos announced on Saturday that he will play his final game for Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday against Clermont Foot. The veteran centre-back will follow Lionel Messi out of the French club after his contract expires.

The 37-year-old defender took to Twitter to post a farewell message to the PSG fans for making him feel at home and to announce that on Sunday he will feature in the shades of purple for one last time. “Tomorrow will be a special day; tomorrow I will say goodbye to another stage of my life, goodbye to @PSG_espanol. I don’t know how many places you can feel at home, but without a doubt, PSG, its fans, and Paris have been one of them for me,” Ramos wrote in his tweet.

After spending the majority of his career in Madrid, Ramos embarked on a new journey and joined the French side in 2021. His initial career was plagued by injuries, and at one point in time, it felt like he would rarely have an opportunity to feature for his new club. In two seasons, Ramso featured for PSG on 44 occasions in Ligue 1, scoring three goals and registering a single assist.

He made his debut for the club in the UEFA Champions League in the 2022–23 season and made eight appearances. The French Giants made their way to the Round of 16, but their dream of clinching their first UCL title came to an end on a bitter note. They were knocked out by Bayern Munich with an aggregate score of 3-0.

The Spanish defender is not the only one who is leaving the PSG camp this summer. Along with him, the Argentinian talisman and his former rival in La Liga, Lionel Messi, are also going to play their last game on Sunday.

On 1 June, PSG boss Christophe Galtier confirmed that star striker Lionel Messi would be leaving the club in early June, adding that he had the privilege of “coaching the best player in the history of football”. Galtier said, “I had the privilege of coaching the best player in the history of football. It will be Leo’s last match at the Parc des Princes against Clermont.”

PSG on the verge of Ligue 1 title summit

May 23, 2023, 4:30 pm

Paris Saint-Germain just needs a single point to clinch the French Ligue 1 title. PSG defeated Auxerre 2-1 at the Parc des Princes stadium on Sunday.

After the win, Lionel Messi became the only player from the European Top League to have scored at least 20 goals and delivered at least 20 assists in all competitions this season, as per PSG’s official website. In the match against Auxerre, Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring for PSG in the 6th minute of the match. Just after two minutes, Mbapper again scored in the 8th minute of the match.

In the second half, Lassine Sinayoko scored a goal for Auxerre in the 51st minute, but they couldn’t manage to get another goal, hence losing the match to Paris Saint-Germain. Paris Saint-Germain took a total of 15 shots, of which only four were on target. Their possession of the ball during the match was 64 percent. They accumulated a total of 755 passes with an accuracy of 92 percent.

Auxerre had a total of 14 shots, of which only seven were on target. Their possession of the ball during the game was 36 percent. They managed to make 421 passes between them, with an accuracy of 88 percent.

Paris Saint-Germain is currently at the top of the French League 1 table with 84 points. They have played 36 matches, out of which they won 27, lost six, and drew three. It was confirmed by Paris Saint-Germain that Lionel Messi would be leaving the French club after the season finished on 4 June.

Paris Saint-Germain’s remaining two league fixtures are against Strasbourg on 28 May and against Clermont-Foy on 4 June.

Messi apologises for ‘unauthorised’ trip to Saudi Arabia

May 6, 2023, 5:17 pm

Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi has apologised for his “unauthorised” trip to Saudi Arabia that has led to his suspension by the French club. The Argentine was suspended from the club on May 2, and he would not be included in the training sessions as well.

Messi admitted it in an apology video on Instagram, where he said: “First of all, I want to apologise to my teammates and the club. Honestly, I thought we were going to have a day off after the game like we did in previous weeks. “I had this trip organised, which I had cancelled already. I could not cancel it again. I repeat, I want to say sorry for what I did. I am waiting to hear what the club wants to do with me,” Messi said.

PSG manager Christophe Galtier says he had “nothing to do with” Messi’s suspension while also condemning fan protests outside players’ homes. “Leo’s suspension has contributed to poor performances; we can’t hide behind that,” Galtier, 56, said on Friday.

PSG is on top of Ligue 1 by five points with five games to play but is out of the Champions League and lost in the last 16 of the French Cup. There were fan protests following their defeat to Lorient in Ligue 1.

After Messi’s suspension news was in the air, another significant follow-up was made on his relations with PSG. Following his suspension, it was revealed on Wednesday that Messi will leave PSG at the end of the season, with the French champions not planning to offer the forward a new contract.

Messi likely to leave PSG after season conclusion

May 5, 2023, 5:50 pm

According to a report on Thursday, Lionel Messi will probably leave Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at the end of the current campaign since the Ligue 1 team has no intention of renewing his contract. After leaving Barcelona due to financial issues in the summer of 2021, Messi signed a two-year contract with PSG. The 35-year-old has made 71 appearances for the French team, contributing to the 2022 championship with 34 assists and 31 goals.

During the World Cup in Qatar, Messi’s agents were in discussions about extending his contract, but the situation has abruptly changed. PSG views Messi’s acquisition as a success on and off the pitch, but some supporters turned against the club after Bayern Munich eliminated them from the Champions League.

Messi was also punished by PSG earlier this week for travelling to Saudi Arabia on a personal promotional trip without authorization. The Argentina international is said to have asked PSG for permission to visit the country, which he did on Sunday night after postponing a business trip twice due to team defeats. After a day of talks with the club’s hierarchy, Messi was suspended for two games and fined two weeks’ pay for failing to obtain that permission.

Messi will now miss the Ligue 1 matches against Troyes and Ajaccio, but he might return for the May 21 meeting against Auxerre. Since the World Cup, the forward and the team have not performed as well as expected, and his departure in the summer will fit with the club’s new strategy of focusing on young French players rather than signing superstar talents.

Barcelona confirms Lionel Messi transfer talks

April 1, 2023, 8:30 pm

Barcelona has confirmed that they are in talks with Lionel Messi about bringing him back to the club when his contract with PSG expires in June.

Vice president Rafa Yuste confirmed on Friday that the club is considering re-signing Messi, who left for PSG in 2021, with coach Xavi Hernandez later adding that he hopes to see the Argentine back at Camp Nou.

Messi, 35, left Barcelona two years ago after spending two decades there because the club could not afford to renew his contract. The financial aspect of any return this summer remains an impediment. To comply with La Liga’s economic regulations and be able to sign players and register contract renewals, Barcelona must cut more than €150 million from their annual spending or raise money through transfers.

Mbappe strikes five, sets record as first PSG player

January 25, 2023, 2:23 pm

Kylian Mbappe emerged as the hero for Paris SaintGermain (PSG), netting five goals in his side’s 7-0 win over Pays de Cassel to reach the final 16 of the ongoing French Cup on Monday, where they will be meeting rivals Marseille.

Mbappe’s exploits on the field included a 12-minute hat-trick in the first half, which is his first hat-trick since France’s defeat to Argentina in the final of FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar in December 18. This took his goal tally to 25 goals in 24 games in the ongoing season. This also moved him to 196 goals for the club, four short of Edison Cavani’s record, who is the top goalscorer for PSG with a total of 200 goals.

The France superstar also became the first PSG player to score five goals in a competitive match.

“We came here to respect this team by playing at our level. That is what we did and we are very happy,” Mbappe said as quoted by Sky Sports.

“It was a great opportunity for them and also for us, because it is a reminder for us that we come from amateur football and it is important to keep this link. Even if it is only for one game,” added Mbappe.

PSG coach Christophe Galtier picked up a strong side featuring Mbappe and Neymar in the starting lineup, but World Cup winner Lionel Messi was rested for the match. Neymar collected a yellow card for a rash tackle in the 26th minute of the match.

Mbappe put the 14-time cup winners PSG ahead with help of a cross from Nuno Mendes in the 29th minute. Neymar was jeered by the crowd as he scored PSG’s second goal in the 33rd minute. And Mbappe followed it with goals in the 35th minute and 40th minute before the half-time whistle, completing a hat-trick in just 12 minutes.

At the end of half-time PSG was leading by 4-0. Mbappe scored his fourth goal in the 56th minute. In the 64th minute, Carlos Soler scored one to make it 6-0 in favour of PSG.

In the 79th minute of the match, Neymar provided a setup and Mbappe slotted from close range to score his fifth goal of the match.
