ISKCON Condemns Arrests

The International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has voiced strong condemnation following the arrests. Radharamn Das, Vice-President and Spokesperson for ISKCON Kolkata, shared an update on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), confirming the arrest of Shyam Das Prabhu. “Another Brahmachari, Sri Shyam Das Prabhu, was arrested by Chattogram Police today,” Radharamn Das posted, highlighting the growing tensions surrounding the issue.

Chinmoy Krishna Das’ Ongoing Detention

The arrest of Shyam Das Prabhu follows the detention of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former ISKCON member, who was taken into custody earlier this week. He was accused in a sedition case and denied bail shortly after his arrest on Monday. His arrest has sparked further concerns about the safety and treatment of Hindu leaders in the region.

Growing Concerns Among Religious Leaders

The arrests of these Hindu monks come amidst rising concerns about religious freedom and the treatment of minority groups in Bangladesh. The detentions have raised alarms about the safety of religious figures, particularly those associated with Hindu spiritual organizations.

As the situation continues to unfold, many are calling for a clearer understanding of the charges against these religious leaders and whether their arrests are politically motivated. The incidents in Chattogram have drawn widespread attention, especially from the international Hindu community, demanding justice and transparency.

On Tuesday, the US State Department expressed its support for the Pakistani people’s right to protest peacefully. US Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller called on Pakistani authorities to respect human rights and freedoms.

Imran Khan’s Call for Nationwide Protests

The comments from the US came as former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is jailed, called for nationwide protests, with Islamabad as the epicenter. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), stated that the protests aim to achieve three main objectives: the revocation of the 26th Amendment, the restoration of the Constitution, and the release of political prisoners.

Clashes Erupt as Protesters March

As thousands of protesters headed to Islamabad, violent clashes erupted between citizens and the police, as per reports. The ongoing unrest has intensified concerns in Pakistan.

US Calls for Peaceful Protests and Lawful Conduct

When asked about the escalating situation, Miller emphasized, “We support freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association. We call on protesters to demonstrate peacefully and avoid violence. At the same time, we urge Pakistani authorities to respect human rights, follow the law, and maintain order.”

Imran Khan’s 470 Days in Jail

Imran Khan has now been imprisoned for over 470 days, PTI reported. Miller also addressed questions about Pakistan’s future, stating, “We support the right of people in Pakistan to protest peacefully. We call on Pakistani authorities to respect human rights and freedoms.”

Bushra Bibi Demands Imran Khan’s Release

Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, joined the calls for his release. As PTI convoys moved toward Islamabad for the “Final Call” protests, Bibi told supporters that the march would not end until Khan was freed, as reported. PTI has launched a nationwide protest to secure his release.

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, expressed serious concern about the ongoing violence in Manipur. On Saturday, he called the situation “deeply disturbing” and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the troubled state. He emphasized the need to restore peace and help heal the region.

Rahul’s Message

In a post on X, Gandhi wrote, “The recent string of violent clashes and continuing bloodshed in Manipur is deeply disturbing. After more than a year of division and suffering, every Indian hoped that the Central and State governments would have made every effort at reconciliation and found a solution.”
He added, “I urge the PM once again to visit Manipur and work towards restoring peace and healing in the region.”

Curfew Reimposed in Imphal West

The situation in Manipur worsened this week. On Saturday, officials reimposed a curfew in Imphal West District. This came after authorities had relaxed restrictions on November 16 from 5:00 am to 8:00 pm. However, an order from District Magistrate Kirankumar revoked the relaxation, citing law and order issues.

The order stated, “Now, due to the developing law and order situation in the district, the above-mentioned curfew relaxation order stands cancelled with immediate effect, i.e., from 4:30 pm on November 16, 2024. A total curfew is imposed with effect from 4:30 pm on November 16, 2024, until further orders.” Essential service workers, such as those in healthcare, remain exempt.

Rising Tensions

Tensions escalated earlier this week. Several women vendors protested after the alleged abduction of six individuals. Later, three bodies were found. It is unclear if the bodies belong to the missing persons. Violence has plagued Manipur since May 2023, with no resolution in sight.

AFSPA Extended in Key Areas

In response, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958, in six police station areas. This extension, effective until March 31, 2025, aims to assist security forces in maintaining order.

The areas under AFSPA include Sekmai, Lamsang, Lamlai, Jiribam, Leimakhong, and Moirang. These police stations fall in Imphal West, Imphal East, Jiribam, Kangpokpi, and Bishnupur districts. According to the MHA, this decision followed a detailed security review and consultation with stakeholders.

Manipur remains on edge. Curfews, protests, and extended AFSPA highlight the state’s fragile security. Gandhi’s appeal to the Prime Minister underscores the urgency for immediate action and long-term solutions.

In April, 2024, The Hindu had reported that the Supreme Court heard a petitioner’s contention that mob lynching incidents are recorded by the police in certain states as brawls or accidents. In another instance, the apex court had used strong language while asking the Union Government to curb mob lynching. It had observed, “Citizens cannot take the law into their hands or become law unto themselves,” and added that “horrendous acts of mobocracy” cannot become the new norm.
</excerpt>

“Law may not be able to make a man love him but it can keep the man from lynching him.”
-Martin Luther King Jr.

There is an urgent need to bring in a special law to deal with the menace of mob lynching. The special law dealing with the atrocities against the scheduled caste and scheduled tribes — the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 — may not have ended caste discrimination, but it has acted as a great deterrent.

After all, mob lynching is no ordinary crime.

Sources in the Union Home Ministry say that as per the Indian constitutional scheme, ‘Police’ and ‘Public Order’ are State subjects. State Governments are, therefore, responsible for controlling crime, maintaining law and order, and protecting the life and property of the citizens. They are empowered to enact and enforce laws to curb crime in their jurisdiction.
Many legal experts and community leaders, however, insist that these measures would not suffice. They feel mob lynching is of a separate genre and needs special attention and treatment. Mob lynching can not be aptly handled under section 323, 324, 326, 307 and 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

Section 323 of the IPC deals with punishment for voluntarily causing hurt while section 324 deals with those wilfully causing hurt by dangerous weapons. Section 326 entails causing grievous hurt, section 307 and section 302 deal with attempt to murder and punishment for murder, respectively. As per the Dainik Bhaskar investigation, in mob lynching, fixing the onus of crime on individuals proves far more tricky. There are instances where an unruly mob has tried to implicate police, accusing them of custodial death when a grievously injured victim was handed over to the police and died upon reaching the hospital.

In some states, there have been instances of a section of the political class being ‘considerate’ towards lumpen vigilantes. In the absence of a strong political will, there is a possibility that the new law may not be diligently enforced.

Some argue that more than enacting a law, Union and State governments need to show greater political will to curb mob lynching. In some States, there have been instances of a section of the political class being ‘considerate’ towards lumpen vigilantes. In the absence of a strong political will, there is a possibility that the new law may not be diligently enforced.

</excerpt>

As the Democratic National Convention (DNC) begins in Chicago, a significant protest has erupted on Michigan Avenue, marking the start of a series of demonstrations expected throughout the week. On Sunday evening, up to 1,000 protesters gathered at the prominent corner of Wacker Drive and Michigan Avenue, highlighting issues such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and abortion rights.

The protest, organized by groups like Bodies Against Unjust Laws, aims to “Disrupt the DNC,” criticizing American support for Israel’s actions in Gaza, which they equate with genocide. Protest leaders, including Linda Loew, argue that political rhetoric from both major parties fails to address their concerns adequately. They call for an end to U.S. military aid to Israel and a halt to weapons deliveries.

Some demonstrators, like Megan Behrent, a college professor from New York, expressed disillusionment with the current Democratic leadership, suggesting that there is little substantive difference between Democratic and Republican positions. Behrent and others are considering third-party options to maintain an independent voice on critical issues.

Andy Thayer, a prominent Chicago activist, pointed out the delays faced in securing permits for their protest, which was applied for on January 2 but delayed for over eight months. Despite these challenges, the city has allowed the protest, with Chicago city alderman Ronnie Mosley describing it as a legitimate exercise of free speech.

Protesters chanted slogans like “Intifada, intifada,” referring to past uprisings in Israel and the occupied territories. They emphasize that while voting is important, it alone cannot guarantee the protection of their rights, and they continue to demand action beyond electoral promises.

This demonstration sets the stage for what is anticipated to be a week of intense and varied protests during the DNC, reflecting broader dissatisfaction with both major political parties.

Despite Maduro claiming a win, the opposition argues that its candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, was the true victor. The election results have led to widespread unrest, numerous arrests, and international condemnation.
</excerpt>

Opposition supporters across Venezuela have rallied against President Nicolás Maduro’s disputed victory in last month’s presidential election. Thousands gathered in Caracas, led by opposition figure María Corina Machado, who urged demonstrators to stand firm and not fear the government’s response.

Machado, who had been in hiding after facing insurrection charges, emphasized that the voice of the people must be heard. She led the protesters while many waved copies of their election records as proof of voting irregularities. Machado, barred from running in the election, has called for increased nationwide protests to pressure Maduro into conceding.

Maduro’s supporters also held their own demonstration, and police and military forces were deployed in response. Maduro, who claims he won a third six-year term, mocked opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez, who had called for an “orderly transition” and urged Maduro to peacefully hand over power.

The opposition has released tallies showing Gonzalez as the true winner, but the electoral commission, aligned with Maduro, reported a 52% victory for him, citing lack of transparency. Since the election, anti-government protests have intensified, leading to over 2,400 arrests and widespread condemnation from the UN for the government’s “fierce repression” of dissent.

Protests have also spread globally, with demonstrations occurring in cities from Australia to Spain, and the European Union, the United States, and several Latin American countries have refused to recognize the election results.

</excerpt>

Government-appointed committee in Sweden is considering a controversial proposal that would require public sector workers to report undocumented individuals to authorities. Referred to as the “snitch law” by critics, the proposal is part of a 2022 agreement among four right-wing parties, leading to the formation of a coalition government that includes parliamentary support from the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD).

Resistance from Rights Campaigners and Professional Associations

Since the SD, known for its anti-immigration stance, became Sweden’s second-largest party, efforts have intensified to turn this proposal into law. The committee is expected to present its findings by the end of November, which could lead to up to a million public sector workers, including doctors, teachers, and librarians, being obligated to report undocumented individuals they encounter in their professional roles.

Despite being in the early stages, the proposal has already sparked significant opposition from human rights advocates and professional groups. Michele LeVoy, of the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants, condemned the proposal as “utterly inhumane,” warning that it could deter people from accessing essential services like healthcare and education out of fear of being reported.

Impact on Trust and Professional Ethics

Professional associations argue that the proposed law would undermine the trust they have worked to build with the communities they serve and exacerbate racism and stigmatization. The Swedish Medical Association has been vocal in its opposition, with its president, Sofia Rydgren Stale, stating, “I became a doctor to help people, not monitor and report them.” The association has emphasized that such reporting requirements would conflict with the ethical obligation to provide care without discrimination.

Teachers’ unions have also expressed deep concerns, with the Professional Ethics Council of two major Swedish teachers’ unions suggesting that the law could force educators into a position where civil disobedience might be the only ethical response. Librarians have similarly opposed the idea, with more than 90% indicating they would rather lose their jobs than comply with such a law.

Government’s Perspective and Ongoing Debate

Despite the widespread opposition, the Swedish government maintains that the proposal is intended to support legal migration by enabling more efficient deportations of individuals who have been denied asylum. Maria Malmer Stenergard, the Minister of Migration, argued that the law would help uphold government decisions and prevent the growth of a “shadow society” of undocumented individuals.

However, the government has acknowledged the potential conflicts with professional ethics, with the committee also examining whether certain professions should be exempt from the reporting requirement.

The ongoing debate has become a focal point of political and social discourse in Sweden, with many warning that the proposed law could have far-reaching consequences for trust, humanity, and democracy in the country.

</excerpt>

On Friday, a crowd demonstrated outside the White House in Washington, protesting the alleged violence against minority Hindus and others in Bangladesh following former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure earlier in the week. The protesters waved American and Bangladeshi flags, held signs urging Bangladeshi minorities to be “saved”. They chanted, “We want justice,” and called for peace amid the recent escalation of violence.

The crowd, comprising activists from human rights organisations, members of the Bangladeshi diaspora, and Indian-American Hindu supporters, travelled from Washington, Maryland, Virginia, and New York. They called for the intervention of Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist who took charge of the caretaker administration on Thursday.

Shubho Roy, a Bangladeshi Hindu with relatives in Bangladesh, voiced his concern about the situation and urged for a lasting resolution to safeguard the dignity and safety of minorities in the country.

“We need a permanent solution so that Hindus and other minorities can live with dignity in Bangladesh,” Roy told ANI.

He underscored the suffering of Hindus in Bangladesh who had fled their country after years of systemic violence, discrimination, and oppression. Now, standing before a symbol of American power, they were calling on the world to acknowledge the atrocities they had escaped.

“We were pushed away from Mahabharat (India), Akhil Bharat, Akhand Bharat. We were never a part of Pakistan. We were framed and pushed away from India,” Roy added.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a message on X calling for the “safety and protection” of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh.

“My best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibilities. We hope for an early return to normalcy, ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities. India remains committed to working with Bangladesh to fulfill the shared aspirations of both our peoples for peace, security and development,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

Protesters described their demonstration as a urgent plea from those suffering persecution, thousands of miles away. Priyadarshani Saha, one of the participants, called on US lawmakers to support Bangladeshi minorities, including Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, and other indigenous groups.

“The Biden administration had the ability to make a difference, to influence the Bangladeshi interim government, and to pressure the international community to take action,” Saha said.

Signs at the protest displayed messages like “End Religious Persecution in Bangladesh” and “Protect Minority Rights,” while the crowd chanted for justice and called for international intervention.

Mahendra Sapa from Vishwa Hindu Parishad America expressed solidarity with the Bangladeshi diaspora, urging the State Department and White House to heed the lessons of the 1971 genocide and work to prevent a recurrence of similar atrocities.

“We strongly urge the State Department and White House to have lessons learned from the 1971 genocide and make sure that those mistakes are not repeated,” Sapa told ANI.

“The office of the United Nations Secretary-General has said the violence in Bangladesh should be “tamped down”, adding it stands against any “racially based attacks” or “racially based incitement to violence,” he added.

Thousands of Bangladeshi Hindus have been seeking refuge in India to escape the violence. Hindus, constituting around 8% of Bangladesh’s 170 million population, have historically supported Hasina’s Awami League party, which has faced criticism following recent violent confrontations between anti-quota protesters and security forces. Several US leaders, including Republican Congressman Pat Fallon and Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, have also condemned the violence in Bangladesh.

</excerpt>

Community organizations in Canada have raised alarm and called for urgent action from Ottawa following reports of atrocities against the Hindu minority in Bangladesh. The violence erupted after Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister, leading to an interim government taking charge in Dhaka.

CoHNA’s Campaign for Support

The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), Canadian chapter, highlighted the dire situation, stating, “The Hindu population in Bangladesh is currently facing extreme vulnerability and fighting for their survival.” Following Hasina’s departure to India, reports have emerged of attacks on temples, homes, and businesses of Hindus, along with murders by extremist elements.

CoHNA launched a campaign urging Canadians to write to their elected representatives, seeking a public condemnation of the violence and human rights violations against Bangladesh’s Hindu minority. The organization called on Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly and Global Affairs Canada to monitor the situation proactively, especially for religious and gender-based targeting. They also urged Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada to expedite the resettlement of the most vulnerable Bangladeshi Hindus under the Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP).

Support from Other Organizations

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) endorsed CoHNA’s action alert to bring this crisis to the attention of Canada’s elected officials. CIJA stated, “Religious minorities in Bangladesh are being targeted in violent attacks. Dozens of Bangladeshi Hindus have been killed, several temples destroyed, and homes and businesses systematically vandalized and set on fire.”

Additionally, the advocacy group Bangladeshi Canadian Hindus is planning a vigil and a protest in Toronto later this week to honor the victims of the violence. The Canadian Hindu Chamber of Commerce (CHCC) also expressed deep concern about the escalating situation and its impact on the Hindu community in Bangladesh. CHCC called on the international community to monitor the situation closely and advocate for the protection of vulnerable populations in Bangladesh.

Canadian Government’s Response

On Monday, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly called for “a quick and peaceful return to a democratic and inclusive civilian-led government in Bangladesh,” emphasizing the need for stability and protection of minority communities during this period of turmoil.

Interestingly, Indian astrologer Prashant Kini had predicted this unrest months in advance, warning of potential threats to Hasina during this period. Kini’s accurate forecast has captured widespread attention, adding a unique angle to the unfolding political drama in Bangladesh.
</excerpt>

In a dramatic turn of events, Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country after violent protests erupted in Dhaka. The protests were sparked by widespread dissatisfaction with the government’s policies, leading to Hasina’s resignation. Following her departure, she flew to Hindon Airport, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, before planning to travel to London.

Astrological Prediction Comes to Light

I have Already predicted Sheikh Haseena will be in trouble in August 2024 ,
Is she flee her country !!!! https://t.co/WePWMaOOkP

— Prashanth Kini (@AstroPrashanth9) August 5, 2024

Amidst the political chaos, it has come to light that Indian astrologer Prashant Kini had predicted the turbulence surrounding Sheikh Hasina in December 2023. In his forecast, Kini mentioned that Hasina needed to be cautious during the months of May, June, July, and August 2024, warning of potential assassination attempts.

Kini later reshared his prediction on August 5, asking, “I have already predicted Sheikh Haseena will be in trouble in August 2024. Will she flee her country?” This post quickly went viral, gaining over 2.6 million views and receiving numerous likes and comments.

Social Media Reactions

Social media users had varied reactions to the astrologer’s foresight. One individual remarked, “What a prediction it was,” while another added, “Impressive work!” A third user humorously commented, “Please predict my life it’s more important than Bangladesh.”

Background on Bangladesh’s Unrest

The unrest in Bangladesh began with violent student demonstrations over a controversial government quota system. The policy allocated 30% of government positions to the relatives of veterans of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, sparking anger and protests across the country.

The Supreme Court reduced the quota to 5% after the administration appealed the high court’s decision to reinstate the scheme. The situation escalated when protesters stormed Hasina’s official residence, leading to her eventual resignation and departure.

Military Intervention and Interim Administration

Following the chaos, Bangladesh’s army chief, Waker-uz-Zaman, announced that the military would aid in establishing an interim administration. He urged for peace and called for calm to restore stability in the nation.

As Bangladesh navigates through this political turmoil, the role of astrology in predicting political events has added an intriguing layer to the unfolding drama. The future remains uncertain as the country faces significant challenges ahead.

</excerpt>

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was given just 45 minutes by the Bangladesh Army to leave the country on Monday, sources revealed. Hasina had sought to broadcast a message to the nation before departing, but the army did not permit this.

Tensions within the Bangladesh Army were reportedly high, with two factions emerging: one supportive of Hasina and another, consisting of junior officers and around 60 retired officers, opposing her.

On Sunday, the Army’s National Security Council met and informed Hasina that they would not intervene to stop the student protests scheduled for Monday. The situation remained calm until around 9 a.m. on Monday, when thousands of students entered Dhaka from the Gazipur border, leading to a rapid escalation in violence.

Sheikh Hasina resigned amid the unrest that had plagued the country in recent weeks. The violence intensified on Sunday, resulting in 97 deaths as protesters stormed both the Prime Minister’s residence and the parliament. In response to the chaos, the army announced that an interim government would take over.

Hasina’s flight has landed at Hindon Airbase near Delhi, where she is currently being housed in a safe location.

</excerpt>

On August 5, 2024, Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, arrived in India after being forced to resign amid a severe political crisis in her homeland. She landed at Ghaziabad’s Hindon Airport in a C-130 transport aircraft, accompanied by her sister, Sheikh Rehana. Hasina’s visit to India is reportedly a temporary stop before she heads to the United Kingdom, where she has sought political asylum.

Understanding Political Asylum

Political asylum is a form of international protection granted to individuals in foreign countries who have fled their own country due to a well-founded fear of persecution. This protection is typically offered to those who face threats to their safety because of their political beliefs, membership in a particular social group, or other factors. Once granted asylum, the individual is safe from deportation to their home country and can live legally in the host country.

In 2023, the UK processed approximately 112,000 asylum claims, according to The Guardian.

Sheikh Hasina’s Situation

Sheikh Hasina’s departure from Bangladesh comes in the wake of intense student protests against her government, which have resulted in over 280 deaths since they began in July. The protests, sparked by dissatisfaction with the job quota system, have severely destabilized the country. As tensions escalated, Hasina’s official residence was stormed by protesters, prompting her urgent departure.

Hasina’s arrival in India involved a brief stop in Delhi, where she met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval at the Hindon Air Force base. The Indian authorities granted her a safe passage into their airspace amid the escalating crisis in Bangladesh.

The Move to London

Hasina’s final destination is expected to be London, where she has requested asylum. Her sister, Sheikh Rehana, already holds UK citizenship. The UK has historically been a refuge for political figures and activists from various countries, including Bangladesh. Previous asylum seekers from Bangladesh include Tarique Rahman, the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who has been living in London since 2018.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has expressed concern over the violence in Bangladesh and emphasized the need for swift action to restore democracy and peace. The British government has been vocal about ensuring a resolution to the political turmoil in Bangladesh.

Public Reaction and Historical Context

In the UK, particularly in areas with significant Bangladeshi communities, there have been mixed reactions to Hasina’s departure. Some individuals have celebrated her ouster, viewing it as a step towards reclaiming democratic rights and freedoms.

Hasina’s situation echoes the experience of other political figures who have sought refuge in the UK. For instance, Nawaz Sharif, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, spent several years in London after being convicted of corruption in 2019. Sharif’s return to Pakistan in 2023 was marked by significant political developments, with speculations about military involvement in his return.

Sheikh Hasina’s journey from Bangladesh to India and potentially to the UK underscores the complexities of political asylum and the broader implications of political instability. As she seeks refuge in London, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that will lead to lasting peace and stability in Bangladesh.

</excerpt>

Eight people were arrested in Sunderland following a night of rioting and disorder, which included violent clashes and property damage. Three police officers were hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the unrest. Reports indicate that a building was set on fire, and a car was overturned and also set alight. The protesters, some of whom wore balaclavas and draped themselves in England flags, targeted police with beer cans and stones in the city centre and a nearby mosque.

Nick Lowles of Hope Not Hate condemned the violence, attributing it to far-right and racist elements. While initial reports suggested a police building was on fire, it was later clarified that an adjacent building was affected. The protests, fueled by misinformation about a recent knife attack in Southport, began at Keel Square and featured Islamophobic chants.

In response, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized that those inciting violence would face severe consequences and assured full governmental support for police actions. Extra prosecutors have been deployed to handle the situation swiftly.

Local officials, including North East Mayor Kim McGuinness and Sunderland Central MP Lewis Atkinson, condemned the violence and reaffirmed their commitment to community safety and unity. The Tyne and Wear Metro and bus services were disrupted, and a local cinema closed for safety reasons. Education Secretary and Sunderland MP Bridget Phillipson also criticized the violence, insisting that those responsible must face legal action.

In Liverpool, anti-fascist groups outnumbered far-right protesters, leading to a relatively calm situation after initial scuffles. Hope Not Hate reported that up to 35 protests were planned across the UK this weekend, driven by anti-multiculturalism and anti-Muslim sentiments.

</excerpt>

Security forces in Venezuela have fired tear gas and rubber bullets at thousands of protesters who took to the streets of Caracas on Monday evening, contesting the disputed presidential election result. The protests erupted a day after President Nicolás Maduro claimed victory, a declaration that the opposition has called fraudulent.

Massive Turnout and Violent Clashes

Protesters, many of whom walked miles from the slums surrounding the city, descended on central Caracas towards the presidential palace. They chanted “freedom, freedom!” and demanded the fall of the government. A heavy military and police presence aimed to disperse the crowds and prevent them from approaching the presidential palace. Footage showed burning tyres on highways and large numbers of people on the streets as police on motorbikes fired tear gas.

Opposition Claims Victory

The opposition has vehemently disputed President Maduro’s victory, asserting that their candidate, Edmundo González, won the election convincingly with 73.2% of the vote. Opinion polls prior to the election had suggested a clear victory for González, who had the backing of united opposition parties. The opposition’s support stemmed from widespread discontent over the country’s prolonged economic crisis and Maduro’s 11-year tenure.

Escalating Violence

In various parts of the city, protesters ripped down and burned posters of President Maduro, while tyres, cars, and rubbish were also set ablaze. Armed police, military personnel, and government-sympathetic left-wing paramilitaries clashed with protesters and blocked many roads around the city centre. The Venezuelan government announced a temporary suspension of commercial flights to and from Panama and the Dominican Republic starting Wednesday evening.

Maduro’s Address to the Nation

In a televised speech, President Maduro urged the nation to remain calm and patient. “We are all under the obligation to listen to the truth, to gear up with patience, calmness, and strength because we are familiar with this movie and we know how to face these situations and how to defeat the violent,” he stated.

As tensions continue to rise in Caracas, the disputed election results have plunged Venezuela into deeper political turmoil, with the potential for further unrest in the days to come.

The country is grappling with extensive protests that have escalated into violence over the past few days, resulting in a death toll of 32. The demonstrations were sparked by the government’s decision, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to introduce quotas for public sector jobs.

Protestors torch BTV building

An official at the station, who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, reported that hundreds of protesters had breached the premises, setting fire to at least 60 vehicles and an office building.

“They first torched a police post at Rampura after police opened fire at them,” he said, referring to a neighbourhood in the capital Dhaka.

“They chased the police officers when they took refuge at the BTV office. Angry protesters then caused mayhem here.”

A local news outlet, Prothom Alo, reported that a group of individuals gained entry to the BTV headquarters by breaking in and subsequently set fire to the vehicles parked inside the building.

Suspension of Internet services

On Thursday, Bangladesh ordered a nationwide shutdown of its mobile internet network, according to the country’s junior telecommunications minister, in response to student protests.

“Yes, we have,” Zunaid Ahmed Palak confirmed to AFP when asked about the measure, stating that it was necessary to “ensure the security of citizens.”

Hasina’s Response

On Wednesday, the prime minister of Bangladesh pledged to hold accountable those responsible for the deaths occurring in the ongoing student protests over civil service hiring regulations.

She said, “I firmly declare that those who carried out murders, looting and violence – whoever they are – I will make sure they will be given the appropriate punishment.”

Students Protest

According to a 2022 report by Bangladesh’s public administration ministry, the country has over 1.9 million civil servant positions. More than half of these positions are filled through affirmative action, which prioritizes women, residents of less developed areas, and other disadvantaged groups rather than purely on merit.

The most controversial aspect of the quota system is the allocation of 30 percent of posts for the children of freedom fighters from the 1971 liberation war against Pakistan. This quota system was established in 1972 by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the independence leader and father of the current Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina.

Protests by students in 2018 led Hasina’s administration to reduce the quota system. However, last month, the High Court ruled that this reduction was unlawful and mandated the government to reinstate the abolished freedom fighter quota.

</excerpt>

Indian citizens residing in Bangladesh have been advised to avoid traveling and limit their movements amid ongoing nationwide protests against the government’s job quota system. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka released an advisory urging the Indian community and students to stay within their living premises as much as possible.

High Commission’s Statement

“In view of the ongoing situation in Bangladesh, the Indian community members and the Indian students residing in Bangladesh are advised to avoid travel and minimize their movement outside their living premises,” the Indian High Commission in Dhaka stated in its advisory.

Emergency Assistance

The advisory also provided instructions for Indian residents in case of emergencies. They were encouraged to reach out to the High Commission and the Assistant High Commissions at their 24-hour emergency numbers if they need assistance.

Reason Behind the Protests

The nationwide strike in Bangladesh centers around demands to abolish a quota system for government jobs. Opponents of the system argue that it unfairly benefits members of Bangladesh’s ruling party, leading to widespread discontent and protests.

Current Situation in Bangladesh

The situation in Bangladesh has become increasingly tense as protesters continue to call for the end of the job quota system. This has led to disruptions and safety concerns, prompting the Indian High Commission to issue a travel advisory for Indian residents in the country.

</excerpt>

Hours after the Karnataka government raised the sales tax on fuel, BJP state unit president B.Y. Vijayendra announced plans for a statewide protest on Monday (June 17) against the decision, which resulted in higher petrol and diesel prices.

Addressing the media, the BJP state president stated, “We urge the Chief Minister to withdraw this decision immediately. Tomorrow, we have organized protests across the state, and we will not stay silent until the hike is reversed.”

He emphasized that protests would take place at all district headquarters.

Vijayendra also criticized the Chief Minister, alleging that the increase in fuel prices was due to the government’s inability to initiate new programs under its five guarantees. He said, “After the Lok Sabha elections, they (the Congress government) have increased fuel prices. This will impact all sections of people across the state.”

The Karnataka government’s decision to raise the sales tax on Saturday resulted in a Rs 3 per litre increase in petrol prices and a Rs 3.5 per litre increase in diesel prices.

Officials clarified that the hike was aimed at mobilizing resources and was implemented after the Karnataka Chief Minister reviewed the state’s revenue generation and fiscal situation.

Furthermore, the fuel price hike followed the conclusion of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the NDA secured 19 out of 28 seats in Karnataka, reducing the ruling Congress to nine seats in the state.

</excerpt>

Amjad Ayub Mirza, a well-known PoJK activist who is based in Scotland, has expressed concern about the worsening circumstances in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), threatening ‘broad daylight murder’ and stating that lives are in danger amid intensifying protests.

“This is the broad daylight murder that is taking place in PoK. Our lives are in danger,” Mirza asserted, offering a glimpse into the chaos gripping the region.

The Awami Action Committee, which is demanding tax-free energy from the Mangla Dam and subsidies on wheat flour, launched a wheel-jam strike that is the cause of the turmoil. Now in its fourth day without end, the strike has become a focal point for inhabitants of PoJK who have been brewing resentment.

The seriousness of the situation is made clear by Mirza’s testimony, which describes altercations between demonstrators and police in Muzaffarabad, Dadyal, Mirpur, and other parts of PoJK. The arrest of several leaders and activists as a result of overnight police raids fueled the dissent even further.

“Suddenly the protesters hit back and the Rangers retreated,” Mirza said, describing the volatile turn of events, adding, “It seemed as if the Rangers had disappeared from the scene, but then they came with a heavy contingency of rangers.”

When hostilities escalated, Mirza disclosed the army commandos’ helicopter incursion into Muzaffarabad. He mentions that each chopper holds roughly twenty to twenty-five commandos, which raises questions about the possibility of additional violence and casualties.

“We are in a desperate situation,” Mirza lamented, highlighting the blackout of internet services in the region, which has compounded the sense of isolation and uncertainty among residents.

In a plea for international intervention, Mirza urged the Indian government to raise the issue at the United Nations and demand answers from the Pakistani ambassador.

</excerpt>

Local media reports on Saturday indicated that a strike in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir’s (PoK) Muzaffarabad disrupted businesses and daily life, leading to clashes between security forces and demonstrators. Organized by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC), the strike saw tear gas shelling by police, affecting residents in homes and mosques. Reportedly, the police response followed stone-pelting from the demonstrators.

Protests unfolded in various PoK areas, including Samahni, Sehansa, Mirpur, Rawalakot, Khuiratta, Tattapani, and Hattian Bala. The strike was called following the overnight arrests of several JKJAAC leaders and activists in Muzaffarabad and Mirpur divisions. The public action committee protests against unfair taxes on electricity bills.

Clashes erupted in PoK’s Dadyal and Mirpur district amidst demonstrations against inflation and power cuts, resulting in multiple injuries and the imposition of a curfew by Pakistani authorities. Rights activists criticized Pakistani federal authorities for “state-sponsored violence” to enforce Section 144 and suppress protests scheduled for May 11 outside the legislative assembly in Muzaffarabad.

The Chief Secretary of PoK reportedly requested six civil armed forces (CAF) platoons for security, anticipating unrest. In preparation for the strike, Section 144 was enforced across PoK, with holidays announced in all educational institutions on May 10 and 11. The JKJAAC movement demands electricity to be provided to consumers at hydro-power production cost.

</excerpt>

Protests were held across Israel on Saturday night for the 27th consecutive weekend against the government’s plan to overhaul the judiciary with legislation that would roll back some Supreme Court powers and give the coalition decisive sway in selecting judges, according to The Times of Israel.

According to overhead imagery provided by Crowd Solutions, over 140,000 people congregated in Tel Aviv, with tens of thousands more in other locations. The protests came only days before the Knesset, the national legislature, holds its first reading on a bill to reduce judicial oversight of the executive and parliamentary branches.

Protest leaders have pledged to intensify their opposition to the government’s renewed efforts, hoping for a show of force as they express growing outrage over the coalition’s plan to pass a bill removing courts’ ability to rule on the “reasonableness” of governmental decisions in its first Knesset reading.

World-renowned Israeli historian Yuval Noah Harari declared at the major demonstration in Tel Aviv, “The time to stop the Netanyahu government is now.”

“We are allowed to and must be angry for what the Netanyahu government is doing to the Israeli dream,” he said, and if the government does not stop, it “will learn what happens when we are angry.”

Matti Friedman, a Canadian-born Israeli author and journalist, warned at a big demonstration outside the President’s Residence in Jerusalem that Israel could become a failed state like Lebanon, ripped apart by corruption and internal discord. According to

The Times of Israel, he vowed that this would not happen.
Police stressed ahead of the events that demonstrators would exercise their right to demonstrate, but they would not accept riots, destruction to infrastructure or official symbols, or harm to police officers.

Over 2,000 police officers were mobilized on Wednesday, anticipating that rioting would continue into the evening.

The teen, identified as Nal, was killed on Tuesday after being stopped for a traffic violation in the Paris suburb of Nanterre, and the officer accused of shooting him was arrested.

According to the prosecutor’s office in Nanterre, the officer will be held for another 24 hours so that prosecutors can question him.

The fatal shooting of the teenager was described as “unjustifiable” by French President Emmanuel Macron. Prosecutors said the boy was in a Mercedes car with two other people at the time of the incident.

“Nothing, nothing justifies the death of a young man,” Macron told journalists in Marseille.

The Congress launched a countrywide campaign over the Hindenburg-Adani row by staging protests in different parts of the country on Monday.

A protest was staged over the Adani issue by congress members in Telangana outside the State Bank of India office in Hyderabad. A protest was also held in Jammu by congress.

A video showing protesters clashing with the police, circulated the internet. The protesters were also raising anti- BJP slogans.

The student wing of Congress in Delhi was also demanding a Joint Parliament Committee probe over Adani row.

The opposition is arguing that the investment of the Adani group in public sector banks such as the SBI and LIC has a big impact on the savings of the middle class.

The opposition also protested near the Gandhi statue outside the Parliament and demanded for a Joint Parliament Committee investigation or Supreme Court-monitored probe into the Hindenburg-Adani row.

Although the Congress is getting the support of other opposition parties on the Adani issue, it has to be seen whether the parties such as the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, Aam Aadmi Party and Trinamool Congress, which are seen together in the meetings, will join the Congress demonstration or extend moral support.
However, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Janata Dal (Secular) have kept their distance from Congress on this issue.

The French government is about to bring its new bill to officially increase the retirement age from 62 to 64. This move is expected to receive big push back from the unions as they plan a massive nationwide strike on Thursday.

Intercity, commuter train services, many schools and other public services are expected to be shut down due to strikes. Paris metro will operate only two driverless lines. Tens of thousands of protesters are expected to take part in protests in Paris. The police will also be deployed in large numbers to avoid any violence by ultra-left “black bloc” infiltrators.

President Emanuel Macron is going to face a pivotal moment in his second term as he tries to push through this reform. If forced to take rollback on the bill it would mark the end of any serious reforms in his second term. Steamrolling the reform is a hard option as its outcome would be rolling strikes in all the sectors effectively bringing the country to a standstill.

The attempt to bring this reform is not new. President Macron made an earlier more ambitious attempt in 2019 to execute the reform but had to step back due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The opposition argues there are cost-saving alternatives to making people work longer, such as cutting pensions. The concern over the reform is that it will hit the poor the hardest.

Every subsequent attempt to bring retirement reform since 1982 has been met with fierce public opposition, yet in most cases, the reform was ultimately successful. For instance, despite weeks of demonstrations, Nicolas Sarkozy increased the retirement age to 62 in 2010.

Elisabeth Borne, French PM has pledged simpler options to retire early for those in hazardous or physically demanding occupations, initiatives to attract older people back into the workforce, and a greater guaranteed minimum pension to mitigate the consequences of the change.

Tribals resumed their objection at the border of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh for the 15th day on Wednesday against the building of a bridge on the Indravati river which, they say, would aid the mining firms, but damage the atmosphere and affect the interests of local habitants.

Government officials feel that tribals would end their protests once the benefits of the bridge are explained to them. Additional Collector of Bhamragarh, Shubham Gupta said the bridge would bring connectivity between Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh over the Indravati river which acts as a natural border between Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.

State of emergency status has been declared in Peru’s capital Lima and three additional districts. The emergency will last for 30 days and give the Peruvian army the right to step in and restore order. Several fundamental rights, including the right to assemble and to move about freely, are suspended during the emergency.

The directive has been made public in the government journal. Since December, protesters led by followers of deposed president Pedro Castillo have marched and blocked streets around Peru, calling for fresh elections and the ouster of incumbent leader Dina Boluarte.

The new 30-day measure was announced on Wednesday by Alberto Otarola, the defence minister of Peru. He said it includes “the restriction of freedom of movement and assembly” and would include a curfew because of “acts of destruction and violence,” such as roadblocks.

Peruvian defence minister Alberto Otarola announced the new 30-day measure on Wednesday, which he said involved “the suspension of freedom of movement and assembly” and could include a curfew due to “acts of vandalism and violence”, including roadblocks.

“The National Police with the support of the Armed Forces will ensure the control throughout the national territory of personal property and, above all, strategic infrastructure and the safety and wellbeing of all Peruvians,” the minister said.

At least 42 people have been murdered in battles with security forces throughout the rallies, including a police officer who was burnt alive in a car. Hundreds more have also been injured.

Protestors being arrested by the Police.

However, the international airport of Cusco has been reopened by authorities as it is crucial for Peru’s tourism industry. Castillo’s fellow left-wing party member, President Boluarte, has stated she would not resign.

Castillo requested his supporters to visit the police station where he is being held on Wednesday in the late afternoon, saying that he should be freed after the initial seven-day period of preliminary custody, which expires later that day.

“Enough already! The outrage, humiliation and mistreatment continues. Today they restrict my freedom again with 18 months of pretrial detention,” he wrote in a message posted on Twitter. “I hold judges and prosecutors responsible for what happens in the country.”

Peru has faced political instability in recent years, with Boluarte, 60, the sixth person to hold the presidency in five years. Castillo, who was being investigated in several fraud cases during his tenure, has been remanded in custody for 18 months, charged with rebellion.
